Facebook users in S.Korea dip below 10 mn, young people ditch platform

0

The number of Facebook users in South Korea fell to a record low last month as a growing number of young people opted to use Instagram and other social media platforms, industry data showed.

Facebook had a combined 9.79 million South Korean monthly active users (MAU) on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store as of last month, down 2.6 percent from a month ago, according to the data by Mobile Index.

It is the first time that Facebook’s MAU in South Korea dropped below the 10-million threshold since Mobile Index started to compile related data in 2020, reports Yonhap news agency.

Its monthly figure has been on a steady decline since August 2021, when it hit 13.41 million.

Insiders said the decline came as the younger generation prefers using other social media more compatible with short-form content like Instagram to Facebook’s traditional text-heavy features.

Mobile Index said the number of Instagram’s MAU reached 18.52 million last month in South Korea, up 7 percent from a year earlier.

According to a separate survey by the Korea Press Foundation, 46.1 percent of local students in elementary, middle, and high schools said they used Facebook last year, down from 80.3 percent in 2019.

But the favorable response to Instagram rose sharply to 81.6 percent in 2022 from 61 percent in 2019.

NTR Jr says his ‘legs still hurt’ from shooting ‘Naatu Naatu’

Superstar NTR Jr says that the steps from his iconic number ‘Naatu Naatu’ from the film ‘RRR’ were not tough, but it was the “sync” which was tougher. He adds that his “legs still hurt” from shooting the song, for which he and his co-star practiced over three hours every day.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, NTR Jr was asked if there was a moment when this film is crossing all global lines and everyone is loving it.

The Indian actor replied: “We had no idea. The experience of shooting that song, I have been telling this… My legs still hurt.”

“The steps were not hard but what was harder was the sync. We were practicing it every day for three hours. We were rehearsing it while we were shooting that song… we rehearsed a week before we shot for that song and we were rehearsing on set as well. It was only for synchronization.”

How does it feel to add an Academy award-nominee to his list of accolades?

NTR Jr replied with a smile: “What else could an actor ask for, what else would a filmmaker ask for to be a part of thE biggest celebration of cinema globally, the Oscars.”

He added on the big day, he would not be walking the red carpet as an actor but as an Indian.

“For that day… I think we are not going to walk as actors in ‘RRR’. I am not going to walk as an actor from the Indian film industry. I am going to walk as an Indian on that carpet with pride filled in my heart carrying my nation in my heart.”

S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ bagged a nomination in the Best Original Song category at the 95th Oscar Awards for its livewire track ‘Naatu Naatu’. The grand event will be held on March 12.

The track, composed by M. M. Keeravani, brought home the first Indian and Asian song to win the Best Original Song award at the 80th Golden Globe Awards in January.

Budget to give new momentum to women-led development: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that this year’s budget will give new momentum to the efforts of women-led development.

Addressing a post-budget webinar on “Economic Empowerment of Women”, he said that the “country is seeing this year’s budget as an auspicious beginning for achieving the target of a developed nation by 2047”.

“The results of efforts for women empowerment are visible and we are feeling a revolutionary change in the social life of the country.”

The Prime Minister informed girls’ enrolment in science, technology, engineering, and maths is at 43 percent today, which he claimed was more than countries like the US, UK, and Germany.

Referring to the Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojana, Modi said that the scheme has given women a new voice in the economic decisions of the household.

The Prime Minister reiterated that in the last nine years, the country has moved with a vision of women-led development.

He added that India has taken these efforts to the global stage as it is figuring prominently in the G20 meeting presided over by India.

Adobe won’t do mass layoffs, says its chief people officer

0

Bucking the layoff trend that has hit companies across the spectrum, software major Adobe has said it will not perform company-wide layoffs.

Unlike other Silicon Valley tech giants, Adobe will not do any mass layoffs this year, according to its Chief People Officer Gloria Chen.

In an interview with Bloomberg Television, she said that “We are committed to not having company-wide layoffs.”

“We’re actually committed to continuing to grow here,” Chen said, as Adobe opened its fourth office, based in San Jose, California which has a capacity for 3,000 employees.

In December, Adobe laid off some 100 employees from its sales team amid the rough global macroeconomic conditions.

Adobe said that the company “shifted some employees to positions that support critical initiatives” and removed “a small number” of other jobs.

“Adobe is not doing company-wide layoffs and we are still hiring for critical roles,” the software major had said in a statement.

Adobe will post its Q1 quarterly earnings results on March 15. The company achieved revenue of $4.53 billion in its fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2022, which represents 10 percent year-over-year growth.

Adobe achieved revenue of $17.61 billion in the fiscal year 2022, which represents 12 percent year-over-year growth.

“Adobe drove record revenue and operating income in fiscal 2022,” said Shantanu Narayen, chairman, and CEO, of Adobe. “Our market opportunity, unparalleled innovation, operational rigor, and exceptional talent position us well to drive our next decade of growth.”

Jennifer Lawrence hired to date a 19-year-old in ‘No Hard Feelings’ trailer

Actress Jennifer Lawrence stars in the raunchy comedy ‘No Hard Feelings’ whose trailer highlights her character’s attempt to seduce a 19-year-old boy.

In the movie, Lawrence stars as Maddie, a down-on-her-luck Uber driver in need of some quick cash to save her childhood home after an ex-boyfriend/tow truck driver, Gary, (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) repossesses her car.

A now-out-of-work Uber driver, Maddie stumbles upon an interesting offer from two rich parents, who are looking for someone to “date” their socially awkward teenage son, reports aceshowbiz.com.

Matthew Broderick and Laura Benanti play the wealthy parents, who are trying to get their college-bound son Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) “out of the shell” before he goes to Princeton. In an exchange for a new car, Maddie agrees to “date” the teenager.

The video goes on to show Maddie’s failed attempts to sleep with Gary and the hilarity that ensues. In one scene, Maddie approaches Gary at an animal shelter and asks him, “Mind if I touch your wiener?” before making it clear that she’s referring to a Dachshund wiener dog that he’s holding.

Maddie then offers to drive Gary home in a van, but she ends up getting pepper sprayed in the face as he thinks she’s trying to kidnap him. She takes him on a dinner date and to a party, goes skinny dipping with him, and dances seductively in front of him.

From director Gene Stupnitsky’s Good Boys’, who co-wrote ‘Bad Teacher’, ‘No Hard Feelings’ is described as a laugh-out-loud, edgy comedy.

According to the official synopsis, “On the brink of losing her childhood home, Maddie discovers an intriguing job listing: wealthy helicopter parents looking for someone to ‘date’ their introvert 19-year-old son, Percy, before he leaves for college. To her surprise, Maddie soon discovers the awkward Percy is no sure thing.”

Natalie Morales and Scott MacArthur join the cast as Maddie’s friends. John Phillips co-wrote the script, with Lawrence also serving as producer alongside Naomi Odenkirk, Justine Polsky, and Marc Provissiero.

The coming-of-age comedy is scheduled to be released in US theatres on June 23.

Grace Van Dien is ‘turning down acting projects’ after ‘sexual advances’ from movie producer

‘Stranger Things star Grace Van Dien is opening up about a bad experience on a recent movie set that is causing her to be more selective with her acting projects.

In a Twitch stream on Tuesday, Van Dien – who played Chrissy Cunningham on the most recent season of ‘Stranger Things’ – revealed that she has turned down four movie roles in the last two-and-a-half weeks and will be focusing more of her time on streaming, reports ‘Variety’.

“Here’s the thing, I have seen that some people are upset with me for turning down acting projects and deciding to stream more, but the fact of the matter is the last few projects I’ve worked on I didn’t have the best experiences with some of the people I had to work for,” Van Dien said.

She then alleged that a film producer made unwanted sexual advances toward her on set.

“One of the last movies I did, one of the producers asked me to… like, he hired a girl that he was sleeping with and then he had her ask me to have a threesome with them,” Van Dien said.

“So… that’s my boss. And then I didn’t and I cried and I was so upset. But when people are like, ‘How is streaming better for your mental health?’ That’s how. I get to stay inside my house and play video games and I don’t have my boss asking me to have sex with them.”

Van Dien added that though she’s sticking to streaming for now, she hopes to get back into show business soon – and on her own terms.

“I’m happy here, and I’m developing my own projects,” she said. “I’m hoping that someone decides to fund them because then I can be in control of my own set, and I’m not gonna ask my actors to sleep with me.”

Beyond ‘Stranger Things’, Van Dien has also recently appeared in ‘V for Vengeance’ and the Toronto Film Festival selection ‘What Comes Around’.

Jobless claims hit record high in US, new waves of layoffs expected

0

The weekly jobless claims have hit record high in the US, and more waves of layoffs could be on the way as the Federal Reserve’s interest rate hikes push companies to cut costs, the media reported.

Nearly 211,000 people filed initial jobless claims last week, surpassing economist projections for the first time, according to the latest Labor Department data, reports Forbes.

Continuing claims rose to 1.7 million from 1.6 million one week prior hitting the highest level since January 2022.

According to career services firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, companies in the US are slashing jobs this year at the fastest pace since 2009.

They have announced plans to sack 180,713 employees so far this year, up a massive 427 percent from 2022.

“The job market is still very tight, but the direction of movement is changing,” Comerica Bank chief economist Bill Adams was quoted as saying.

After a dismal year for tech companies and startups in 2022 which saw lakhs of employees being shown the door, 2023 started on a similar note, and in January-February, 417 companies laid off more than 1.2 lakh workers globally.

In January alone, close to 1 lakh tech employees lost jobs globally, dominated by companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce, and others.

Meta (formerly Facebook) is reportedly planning another round of massive layoffs, after sacking 11,000 employees in its first round of layoffs.

Indian Wells: Andy Murray pulls off another ‘marathon win’ of the season

0

Former World no. 1 Andy Murray has pulled off another marathon win, coming through a three-hour and 12-minute battle with Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-4 in the Indian Wells opener.

The three-hour and 12-minute triumph on Thursday was one of many marathon matches for the three-time Grand Slam winner, who has earned a bit of a reputation for these kinds of wins in 2023. Murray has competed in 10 matches this season, with a whopping 70 percent of them going to a deciding set.

With this win, he improves to 7-0 in deciding sets in 2023, and 7-3 overall. He will next take on 15th-seed Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta.

The Brit put constant pressure on the 61st-ranked Argentine, earning 20 break points and converting four. He saved four of five break points overall.

Ethceverry troubled Murray in the early stages with his aggressive baseline game. In a thrilling first-set tie-break, he thwarted a Murray pass attempt with fast hands at the net and later clipped the very edge of the line with a forehand winner on set point, leaving Murray incredulous.

Murray countered with depth and precision to turn the match around, finishing with 28 winners to his opponent’s 36. He closed out the win with his sixth ace.

The Briton did not drop serve in the final two sets, saving all three break points against him. He created 20 break chances on return, including 10 in the opening set and eight in the third.

Murray also converted on his only two break points in the second set to force a deciding set. He remains undefeated in final sets this year after a pair of five-set wins at the Australian Open and his four Doha marathons.

“He was coming up with some big serves at times but I also felt like I made some poor decisions as well. The more chances that went by the more you think about it,” Murray said on the court after the win. “I did really well to keep going, in the end, Another brutal match, and glad I managed to get through it.”

WPL 2023: Varied bowling attack has taken Mumbai Indians to top, says Issy Wong

0

Isabelle Wong, Mumbai Indians Women’s team’s English cricketer, has credited the team’s varied bowling attack for the team’s superb unbeaten run in the inaugural Women’s Premier League here.

Superb bowling performances from Issy Wong, and Saika Ishaque, followed by impressive outings from openers Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews helped Mumbai Indians to a dominating eight-wicket win over Delhi Capitals at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, here on Thursday.

This was Mumbai’s third consecutive victory in the league and they are at the top of the table with six points.

Riding on brilliant bowling from Wong (3-10), Saika Ishaque (3-13), and Hayley Matthews (3-19), Mumbai Indians bowled out Delhi Capitals for 105 in 18 overs. Issy, Saika, and Hayley kept picking crucial wickets for Mumbai at regular intervals as only two Delhi batters Meg Lanning (43 off 41) and Jemimah Rodrigues (25 off 18) showed some fight.

Wong said that Mumbai Indians’ varied bowling attack “helps ensure that the right bowlers are bowling at the right batters.”

She added, “We have got left-arm spinners, off-spinners, leg spinners. We have got a variety of seam bowlers as well with different changeups. We cover all bases. It allows us to be really flexible. Harman (captain Harmanpreet Kaur) has been fantastic, just pulling strings here and there. Especially Hayley, Harman brought her on at just the right time vs RCB and the variety of our attack allows us to do that.”

Wong said MI’s perfect start in India’s first franchise-based T20 league was a good position to be in.

“Three out of three is a great start. It can’t get better than that. We have worked really hard in training. We have made the most out of the squad we have got and there have been some great performances from all the girls.”

Apart from the captain who has shown a lot of faith in her, Wong has also had a lot of support from her family back home.

“My mom has been watching every game. It’s been snowing there, so my mom made a snowman this morning and it was wrapped in the Mumbai Indians flag. They are loving it. It’s at a nice time too. When I played in the Big Bash, it was 3 in the morning at home but it has been quite nice here,” Wong was quoted as saying by the Mumbai Indians.

In their next match in WPL 2023, Mumbai Indians Women face UP Warriorz Women at the Brabourne Stadium here on Sunday.

Europa League: Difficult night for Spanish sides as Betis, Real Sociedad lose

0

Sevilla looks as if they could be the only Spanish side in the quarterfinals of the Europa League after the first leg of the round of 16 on Thursday night. The La Liga strugglers gave a boost to under-pressure coach Jorge Sampaoli with a 2-0 home win over Turkey’s Fenerbahce.

An even game tilted Sevilla’s way in the 56th minute thanks to an excellent shot from Joan Jordan, who had come into the game as a second-half substitute, according to news agency Xinhua.

Erik Lamela doubled Sevilla’s lead five minutes from time with a well-placed left-foot shot.

Things were not positive for Spain’s other two sides in the tournament as Real Betis and Real Sociedad both slipped to defeat.

Betis lost 4-1 at a snowy Old Trafford where they matched Manchester United for the first half but were totally outplayed after the break.

RASHFORD STARS FOR THE UNITED

Marcus Rashford put United ahead with a powerful finish in the sixth minute, but Ayoze Perez leveled with an angled drive in the 32nd minute.

Antony’s shot into the corner put United back in front in the 52nd minute and Bruno Fernandes’ powerful header from a corner made it 3-1 seven minutes later before Wout Weghorst’s 82nd close-range finish sealed the win.

Real Sociedad’s dreadful record of going out of the tournament in the first knockout round is in danger of continuing for another year after they lost 2-0 away to Roma.

The side from San Sebastian controlled much of the ball but fell behind to a 13th-minute goal from Stephen El Shaarawy following good work from Tammy Abraham. Three minutes from time, Marash Kumbulla headed in the second following a corner.

In the Conference League, Villarreal tied 1-1 with Belgian side Anderlecht. Manu Trigueros’ first-half goal put Villarreal ahead, but Anders Dreyer levelled in the 57th minute.

IND v AUS, 4th Test: Pat Cummins’ mother passes away, team to wear black armbands on Day 2

0

Australia Test and ODI skipper Pat Cummins’s mother Maria passed away overnight in Sydney due to cancer, according to information reaching here on Friday. She was undergoing palliative care in a hospital in Sydney.

Cricket Australia confirmed the news of Maria’s death in a Tweet on Friday.

“We are deeply saddened at the passing of Maria Cummins overnight,” said Cricket Australia in a statement. “On behalf of Australian Cricket, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Pat, the Cummins family, and their friends.”

The Australian cricketers playing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will wear black armbands as a tribute to her on the second day of the fourth and final Test of the series here.

Cummins had returned home after Australia’s second Test defeat in New Delhi to remain in Sydney to be at the side of his mother who is in palliative care due to breast cancer. Steve Smith is leading the Australian team in India in Cummins’ absence.

Cummins had returned to Australia to be at his mother’s side after her condition worsened. Initially, he was expected to return to India for the third Test at Indore but decided against that. A couple of days back, Cricket Australia announced that he will miss the Ahmedabad Test too and Smith will lead the team instead.

In his contact with the team camp in Ahmedabad over recent days, Australian media has reported that Cummins relayed the fact that he had felt incredibly supported in making the call to leave the tour after the Delhi Test to be by Maria’s side, missing the matches in Indore and Ahmedabad as a consequence.

We are going to carry the whole nation in our hearts as we walk the red carpet: NTR Jr

With the Academy Awards almost here, actor NTR Jr has landed in Los Angeles to attend the Oscars where the epic period action drama RRR’s Naatu Naatu is nominated in the ‘Best Original Song’ category after a smashing win at the Golden Globes.

While the actor’s loyal fandom is all excited to see their idol walk the red carpet at the Oscars, the global icon in a recent interview with KTLA, an LA-based news channel, explained how it will not just be him walking the red carpet but the entire country.

“I don’t think it’s going to be NTR Jr or Komaram Bheem who is going to walk the red carpet. It’s going to be India who will be walking the red carpet. We are going to carry the whole nation in our hearts as we walk the red carpet, I am looking forward to that!” said NTR Jr.

In the interview, the actor also mentioned how he is looking forward to watching music composer M.M. Keeravani and singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava perform the song on the Oscar stage.

Back home in India after the success of RRR, NTR Jr will soon begin working on his next NTR 30 with director Koratala Siva along with Janhvi Kapoor which will release on the big screens on 5th April 2024.

Discord to update its ‘Clyde’ bot with OpenAI tech

0

Chat platform Discord has announced that it is updating its ‘Clyde’ bot using OpenAI technology, which will be launched next week as a “free public experiment.”

The new Clyde will answer questions and have extended conversations with users and their friends.

“You can even have Clyde start a thread for a group of your friends to hang out,” the company said in a blogpost on Thursday.

Clyde can also recommend playlists, and access GIFs and emojis like any Discord user.

“Clyde is learning interesting and fun new things every day, and we’re excited to continue testing and iterating so Clyde becomes a fundamental part of the Discord experience soon,” it added.

Last year, the company introduced AutoMod, which eliminates the need to manually moderate a server.

The platform is adding the power of large language models to AutoMod. The AutoMod AI experiment has begun in a limited number of servers.

“Moderators can leverage Automod AI, which will use OpenAI technology to find and alert the moderator whenever server rules may have been broken, keeping in mind the context of a conversation,” the company said.

Also, the chat platform is testing “Avatar Remix”, an app that will allow friends to remix each others’ avatars using the power of generative image models.

“Starting today, developers can find the Avatar Remix code on Github, and are free (under the open source license) to fork, remix and extend it in entirely new ways using their favourite models,” it added.

Trump may be charged in connection with hush money paid to adult film star

0

Throwing a huge question mark over the 2024 election, former President Donald Trump may be criminally charged in connection with hush money he allegedly paid to silence Stormy Daniels, an adult film star, who said she had an affair with him, according to news reports.

A city prosecutor has “signaled” Trump’s lawyers that he could face criminal charges in the 2016 incident, The New York Times reported on Thursday evening citing unnamed sources.

NBC news also reported quoting his lawyers that Trump had been asked to appear before a grand jury investigating the case, which is usually an indication that an indictment or framing of charges was likely.

But he is not obligated to appear before the grand jury. Trump reacted with a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, calling it a witch hunt and denying the affair with the porn star.

“I did absolutely nothing wrong, I never had an affair with Stormy Daniels, nor would I have wanted to have an affair with Stormy Daniels,” whom he described as “horse face”, he said.

“This is a political Witch-Hunt, trying to take down the leading candidate, by far, in the Republican Party while at the same time also leading all Democrats in the polls, including Joe Biden and Kamala Harris,” he posted.

Public prosecutors in New York are elected officials and Alvin Bragg won as a Democrat.

It is now a race between Bragg and prosecutors in Georgia, where a grand jury has reportedly recommended filing charges against Trump for interfering with the 2020 elections by allegedly trying to pressure state officials to “find” more votes for him.

Bragg had convened a grand jury — a citizens’ panel — to investigate the allegations against Trump and decide if charges should be filed.

Under the legal system in the US, that is the first step in criminal cases and it is followed by the trial where a jury, also made up of citizens, hears the case under a judge and gives a verdict unless the accused asks to dispense with the jury and have the judge decide.

Being charged, standing trial, or even convicted would not disqualify Trump from running for President under the US Constitution.

But the filing of charges and an eventual trial could come in the way of him getting the Republican Party’s nomination to run for president.

He could, however, still run as a third-party candidate or an independent — which would mean a defeat for the Republican candidate.

The charges he could face make a convoluted link to the payoff to Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford.

The primary accusation against Trump is that he gave a former lawyer $130,000 in 2016 during the election campaign to pay off the porn star and showed it as a lawyer’s fee which would be a violation of the law regarding business records.

Related to that is a possible violation of election laws if the payment is construed as an illegal election contribution, compounding the first accusation.

The lawyer, Michael Cohen, was convicted in a federal trial in connection with the payoff and served prison time.

If he were to be charged, it would be the ultimate test of Trump’s boast: “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn’t lose any voters.:

Already many Republicans are against Trump running in 2024. If in a travesty for the Republican Party, Trump runs for the nomination defying the indictments, he could cast himself as a martyr and count on his personal supporters.

It is estimated from various polls that Trump has the hardcore personal support of about 30 per cent of the Republican Party — those standing by him despite the 2020 defeat and 2022 reverses for his handpicked candidates, and who subscribe to his claims that he was the real winner in the election against President Joe Biden.

The participants on January 6, 2021, protests near the Capitol, which led to a riot with some breaking away and invading the building housing Congress, are from this group.

Unless the rest of the party unifies behind a single candidate, Trump could still come ahead with the opposition votes split.

In that scenario, he would have an even tougher uphill battle than in 2020 running against the Democratic Party candidate, who most likely would be Biden.

But if he fails to get the Republican nomination, Trump could play the spoiler and bring down the party’s candidate with a third-party run.

In the 1992 election that brought Bill Clinton to power, the sitting Republican President, George H.W. Bush, lost because of Ross Perot, a conservative who ran as a candidate of the Reform Party that grew out of grassroots support for him.

There is a precedent for a convict running for president from prison.

Eugene Debs, a Socialist trade union leader, ran from prison in the 1920 presidential election after being convicted of sedition for opposing compulsory military service in case of war.

He lost but polled nearly 1 million votes. There is, however, one constitutional bar to candidates running for office: participating in an insurrection or rebellion against the government.

That would require Trump’s conviction in connection with the Capitol riots, which some Democrats want to see. But that is a very remote possibility.
