Case registered after Tikait family gets threat call

A case has been registered against an unknown caller after the family of Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) spokesman Rakesh Tikait allegedly received a call threatening to blow him up and his family for their “anti-government campaign”.

Akshay Sharma, SHO, Bhairakalan police station, said: “A case has been under Section 507 of the IPC and an investigation is underway to identify the caller.”

The BKU spokesman’s nephew, Gaurav Tikait, had received the call on Wednesday night.

Gaurav, son of the organization’s chief Naresh Tikait, said: “Initially, I didn’t take it seriously and disconnected the call.”

He said he took it seriously after the person called again and said: “Rakesh Tikait is going around the country and you people are campaigning against the government.”

7 dead in Germany church shooting

0

At least seven people were killed and eight others injured during a shooting at a Jehovah’s Witness church in the German city of Hamburg, local media reported on Friday.

Earlier media reports said the shooting, which occurred around 9 p.m. on Thursday night, killed six people.

But one more body was found on the upper part of the building later, Xinhua news agency reported citing the German newspaper Bild as saying.

Police have said that a gunman is believed to be dead, but it remains unclear if the attacker is among seven fatalities, the newspaper added.

There was also no evidence of a fleeing perpetrator, according to the police. Hamburg’s Mayor Peter Tschentscher expressed his condolences to the victims’ families.

Police were working flat out to pursue the perpetrators and clarify the background, he said on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the city’s Interior Minister Andy Grote said on Twitter that police special forces and a large number of officers had been deployed to the scene.

The church is located in the city’s Gross Borstel district, about 289 km from Berlin.

A motive for the shooting is yet to be established and police have appealed to the public not to share assumptions or to spread rumors, the BBC reported.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are members of a Christian-based religious movement.

The denomination was founded in the US towards the end of the 19th century, under the leadership of Charles Taze Russell. The headquarters of the movement is in New York.

The panel is headed by Justice Ram Avtar Singh, a retired High Court judge. Its members include Chob Singh Verma and Mahendra Kumar, both retired IAS officers, Santosh Kumar Vishwakarma, former additional legal advisor, and Brajesh Kumar Soni, former additional district judge.

Dubai 2023 GP: Bhyan qualifies for Worlds with Asian record; para-athletics team claims 7 medals

0

Spearheaded by Asian Para Games gold medallist Ekta Bhyan, the young Indian Para Athletics team returned home with seven medals from the Dubai 2023 World Para Athletics Grand Prix.

The Indian contingent, which included several youngsters making their international debut in Dubai, also bagged four silver and two bronze medals while Bhyan won bronze in the women’s wheelchair discus throw (F53).

She also set an Asian Record in the club throw competition though she finished out of the medal bracket at the Dubai Club for People of Determination Grounds. There were altogether seven world records and 45 regional records, making the event a great success.

In the medals standings, China returned to international competition after two years gap with a bang, finishing on top with 102 medals that included 42 gold medals, followed by Ukraine (11 gold medals) and Uzbekistan (9 gold). India finished in 28th place.

Bhyan hurled the discus to 6.35m in the fifth round to claim the bronze medal in the women’s wheelchair discus F53 event, which was won by Ukraine’s Zoia Ovsii (13.19m).

The 37-year-old from Hisar then went on to set a new Asian record in the women’s club F51 event despite finishing sixth with a throw of 17.20m. The event was won by Ukraine’s Ovsii who shone with a throw of 23.88 meters.

Owing to her show in the Club throw event, Bhyan made the cut for the World Para Athletics Championships set to take place in Paris from July 8 to 17, 2023.

“I am glad that with this performance, I could improve my world ranking and set a new Asian record. Though, I was expecting the throw of 18 plus. Anyway, I will work harder and perform better than this in the upcoming events — World Championship and Asian Para Games,” she said.

“The World Championships will be a huge competition with all the best athletes from all over the world. With three months left for the Championships now, the training will be in full swing to win a medal for the country,” Bhyan told the Paralympic Committee of India looking ahead to the major events.

Runners and throwers shine too

Bryan was joined by several youngsters on the podium, including young Mohan Harsha Uyyala who claimed the silver medals in the men’s 100m T47 final.

Delhi-based middle-distance runner Balwant Singh Rawat also picked up a silver medal running the men’s 1500 m T11/12 final in 4:26.63 minutes and doubled it up with his second-place finish in men’s 5000m final T11/12 racing in 17:23.27min.

Throwers Ravi Kumar and Parveen Kumar too added to India’s tally.

While Ravi threw the javelin 50.65m for the silver in the men’s javelin F46 final, Parveen claimed bronze in the men’s javelin F57 event with an effort of 41.86m, before he picked his second bronze (40.84m) in men’s discus men F57 event.

Overall, the Indian team had an amazing run at the United Arab Emirates as they finished second with 23 medals including nine gold in the medals table of the Sharjah International Open Para Athletics Meeting earlier last month.

Sprinter Shalini Saraswathi also set a new Asian Record running the women’s 100m T62 final in 18.04secs. All the records are subject to ratification by the World Para Athletics.

Blessing in disguise: ‘Class’ actress Ayesha Kanga recounts being fired as designer

Actress Ayesha Kanga, who is currently basking in the success of her recently released streaming show ‘Class’, is thrilled with the announcement of the show’s season 2.

The actress, a design professional and an alumnus of the National Institute of Design (NID), would have worked throughout her life as a graphic designer but the future had other plans for her as she got fired from her job and started looking out for modeling opportunities, given her proximity to the fashion world.

Walking down memory lane, she said, “I have always wanted to be an artist, getting into NID was my biggest goal and after I got in, I studied graphic design, and I thought I would do that my entire life. Then one day I got fired from my job and I happened to look elsewhere which is when modeling came by. I have always been interested in fashion, I would follow fashion brands and Indian models very closely from a young age. I even noticed a tilt in Indian campaigns as to how brown women were considered a lot more than just white faces”.

She further mentioned, “We stopped using quintessential faces in high-end fashion campaigns and I was interested in being a part of that. I would, in fact, creatively direct campaigns, style my own shoots, and loved doing my own hair and makeup- all because I enjoyed image making and wanted to be a part of these creative processes. It was a fulfilling journey..

‘Class’ is an adaptation of the Spanish series ‘Elite’ created by Carlos Montero and Dario Madrona.

Lauding the director of ‘Class’ – Ashim Ahluwalia, the actress said, “Ashim is an evil genius, he has such a profound understanding of what he wants things to look and feel like. Everyone has to surrender to his vision and they don’t even mind because it’s stunning”.

“There is always a conflict between art and commerce but his work is such a good indication that art will always persevere. Working with him was great, he really knows how to get performance out of newcomers. The show exists because he did, we exist on the show because of him. I respect him immensely and it would be a dream to work with him again in any capacity”, she concluded.

Kavitha praises Sonia, invites 18 parties to join 1-day hunger strike

A day ahead of the hunger strike here to demand for the introduction of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the current session of Parliament, BRS leader K. Kavitha on Thursday praised Sonia Gandhi for pushing the bill during the UPA tenure.

Kavitha has invited 18 political parties, including Congress to join the one-day hunger strike to press the demand. She said around 6,000 people will come and her organization Bharat Jagruti Manch has reached out to like-minded parties and organizations.

“I salute Madam Sonia Gandhi for having backed the Women’s Reservation Bill despite leading a coalition govt at the Centre,” she said.

Kavitha said she has spoken to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and General Secretary K.C. Venugopal to send a representative to the protest.

The BRS leader, who is pushing for the women’s reservation bill, has to appear before the ED in the Delhi excise policy scam case. She has written to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that she will appear before the agency on March 11.

Kavitha has written the letter in response to the notice issued by the ED asking her to appear before it on March 9.

The daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, Kavitha had earlier apparently requested a week’s time to appear, but the ED rejected her request, and subsequently, she sent another letter.

A statement in this regard was issued from Kavitha’s office late Wednesday night.

“I, being a responsible Indian citizen, and as a woman of this Nation wish to exercise my rights provided under the law,” she wrote.

“Further, I fail to understand why I have been summoned at such short notice. It seems that certain political motives have been masquerading in the name of investigation. I categorically say that I have nothing to do with the present investigation.

“As stated, being a social worker and having prior commitments, I had already planned my schedule for the upcoming week, and the abrupt rejection of my request seems to be motivated by reasons best known to you, which demonstrates that it is nothing but ‘political victimization’,” Kavitha said.

Space Station fires thrusters to dodge collision with satellite: NASA

0

The International Space Station was forced to fire thrusters to dodge a collision with a satellite, NASA has said.

The engines were fired for more than six minutes. To avoid the approaching satellite, the station also had to slightly raise its orbit.

“The orbital outpost maneuvered out of the way of an Earth observation satellite early Monday,” the space agency wrote in a blog post.

“The docked ISS Progress 83 resupply ship fired its engines for just over six minutes slightly raising the station’s orbit to avoid the approaching satellite,” the post added.

The satellite appears to have been an Argentinian Earth-observation satellite launched in 2020, according to Sandra Jones, from NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Space.com reported.

In a tweet Dr. Jonathan McDowell, astronomer and astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, narrowed the possible candidates down to Nusat-17, noting the constellation’s orbital decay.

Nusat-17 is one of ten commercial observation satellites that was launched in 2020 and are operated by geospatial data company Satellogic, the report said.

“The Nusat constellation is one of several whose orbits are slowly encroaching on the ISS’s orbit,” McDowell noted.

Meanwhile, NASA noted that the new orbital trajectory will not impact the upcoming departure of the NASA-SpaceX Crew-5 mission that has wrapped up after months aboard the ISS.

NASA astronauts Josh Cassada and Nicole Mann as well as Koichi Wakata of JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) and Roscosmos cosmonaut Anna Kikina would undock from the ISS at 5.05 p.m. March 9, for a scheduled splashdown at 9.25 p.m. March 10.

Goa CM orders FIRs against those lighting fires in forests

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday directed government officials to register FIRs against those miscreants, who light a fire in forest areas intentionally.

Sawant on Tuesday held a high-level meeting of the State Disaster Management Authority and ordered a thorough investigation into the forest fire that spread in the Mhadei wildlife sanctuary in the last six days.

Apart from fire in the Mhadei wildlife sanctuary, fire incidents from other places in the coastal state have also been reported.

“Fire incidents are taking place at various places. I have instructed officials to register an FIR against those who lit fire intentionally. We will not tolerate such cases,” the Chief Minister said.

He added that along with forest officials, police and fire personnel are keeping a strict vigil on such incidents.

“We will take strict action. Monitoring of the situation is going on,” Sawant said.

The state government has taken the help of the Navy and succeeded in controlling the fire in some areas.

“People who lit the fire in their cashew plantation to clean the areas should stop such practices, or else we will take action against them. Action would be taken against forest guards if they are found negligent in carrying out their duties. A thorough investigation in connection with such cases will be conducted. We will not tolerate the loss of forest,” the Chief Minister added.

Sources informed that the forest department is yet to assess the loss due to fire incidents and instead has focussed on controlling the fire.

Google will promote fewer employees to senior roles in 2023

0

Tech giant Google has informed its employees via an email that fewer of them will be promoted to more senior levels this year as compared to the past.

“The process is manager-led and will be largely similar to last year — though with our slower pace of hiring, we are planning for fewer promotions into L6 and above than when Google was growing quickly,” the tech giant said in an email that was viewed by CNBC.

The L6 distinction refers to the first layer of the workforce which is considered senior and normally consists of people with roughly ten years of experience.

The tech giant said it will be promoting fewer people to senior roles “to ensure that the number of Googlers in more senior and leadership roles grows in proportion to the growth of the company.”

“If your manager believes that you are ready to be promoted, they will nominate you,” it added.

The company said in the email that employees in technical roles who wish to “self-nominate” themselves will have a “short window of time” between March 6 to March 8 to do so.

The changes come as the company is implementing a new performance review system called Google Reviews and Development (GRAD), which will lead to more employees getting low-performance ratings and fewer receiving high marks, the report said.

On January 20, Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed in a letter to employees that about 12,000 people will be laid off globally, accounting for more than 6 percent of the total workforce.

Samsung to launch Galaxy A34, A54 5G smartphones in India next week

0

Samsung is set to launch Galaxy A34 5G and Galaxy A54 5G smartphones on March 15 globally and the India launch will also happen next week, industry sources said on Thursday.

Both Galaxy A34 and Galaxy A54 will add to Samsung’s portfolio of 5G-ready smartphones and will help the company retain its 5G leadership in India.

Galaxy A34 5G and Galaxy A54 5G are likely to be priced between Rs 30,000 and Rs 40,000, sources told Media.

Galaxy A34 5G and Galaxy A54 5G will succeed last year’s Galaxy A53 and Galaxy A33 models.

These two smartphones are likely to be priced a little higher than last year’s devices, and the rise “could be on account of higher memory variants,” sources said.

Galaxy A34 5G will be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 1080 chipset, along with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

Galaxy A54 5G will be powered by Exynos 1380 chipset, coupled with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage.

Both Galaxy A34 5G and Galaxy A54 5G are likely to feature Super AMOLED displays, a 5,000mAh battery, and 25W fast charging.

Both the devices are tipped to come with Android 13 OS out of the box.

Samsung has been introducing flagship innovations in Galaxy A series smartphones over the years.

This year, the company will introduce the Nightography feature in Galaxy A34 5G and Galaxy A54 5G.

Samsung is also likely to introduce exciting offers with the two smartphones for a limited period, the sources said.

The launch of Galaxy A34 5G and Galaxy A54 5G will take Samsung’s portfolio of A series smartphones to four premium mid-range smartphones this year.

The company had earlier launched Galaxy A14 5G and A23 5G in the country.

4th Test, Day 1: Usman Khawaja hits fifty, unbeaten partnership with Steve Smith frustrates India

0

Left-handed opener Usman Khawaja hit his third fifty in the series and stitched an unbeaten 77-run stand with Steve Smith as Australia reached 149/2 in 62 overs against India at tea on the opening day of the fourth Test at Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday.

In what was the first wicketless session of the series, Khawaja read the conditions well, which were batter-friendly, and capitalized on loose deliveries. Like Ravindra Jadeja bowled down the leg and Khawaja was quick to paddle through the fine leg for four. When the left-arm spinner pitched it short, Khawaja was quick to rock back and pull for four more.

On the other hand, Smith played very cautiously and played late to get his boundaries through slash, clip, and pull shots. A patient Khawaja brought up his 22nd Test fifty when he slammed Mohammed Shami past second slip for four. He and Smith remained unbeaten on 65 and 38 respectively to get the session in Australia’s favor and frustrate India, who even got Shreyas Iyer to bowl some part-time leg spin and play the waiting game for a long in the hope of a breakthrough.

Earlier, the day began with a returning Mohammed Shami being wayward and conceding eight byes, with Australia electing to bat first on a pitch that had some up-and-down bounce. India was almost given a breakthrough when Umesh Yadav drew the outside edge from Travis Head, but wicketkeeper KS Bharat dropped a sitter, adding more to his nightmarish start with gloves.

Head began to attack from the 11th over, driving off Umesh straight down the ground before smashing a wide delivery through backward point for collecting a brace of fours. He continued to feast on poor deliveries from Umesh by hitting three boundaries with ridiculous ease.

The flow of boundaries continued as Khawaja clipped Ashwin down their leg, before going on backfoot to pull Ravindra through square leg. Post drinks break, India finally had a breakthrough as Head miscued slog to mid-on off Ashwin.

Though Khawaja put loose deliveries from Ashwin through the on-side, India was successful in getting another wicket as Marnus Labuschagne chopped one onto his stumps off Shami, departing for a single-digit score. From there the bowlers kept things tight for India, as in the last ten overs they gave away only eight runs till the morning session came to a close.

Brief scores: Australia 149/2 in 62 overs (Usman Khawaja 65 not out, Steve Smith 38 not out; Mohammed Shami 1-31, Ravichandran Ashwin 1-32) against India.

Unprecedented: Congress on V-P Dhankhar attaching personal staff in RS committees

The Congress has termed the appointment of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s personal staff in Rajya Sabha committees as “unprecedented” and said this shows the lack of confidence in the existing staff.

Digvijaya Singh, the Congress Rajya Sabha MP, said on Thursday, “Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar appoints his staff on Standing Committees Yes it is unprecedented. But the explanation given is also quite inappropriate. Doesn’t it reflect Chairman Rajya Sabha’s lack of confidence in the existing staff of the RS Secretariat?”

“VP is Chairperson of Council of States Ex-officio. He is not a Member of the House like a Vice-Chairperson or Panel of Vice-Chairpersons. How can he appoint personal staff on Parliamentary Standing Committees? Would this not be tantamount to institutional subversion? Manish Tewari, Congress Lok Sabha MP said.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s personal staff was attached to Parliament committees according to an order by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat on Tuesday.

The attachment is in 12 standing committees and eight departments related to the standing committees.

According to the Tuesday order, “following officers have been attached With the committee mentioned against their names with immediate effect and until further order.”

Kaustubh Sudhakar Bhalekhar is attached to the Transport, Tourism, and Rules committee. Dinesh D. has been attached to the personnel and law committee.

Senior Personal Secretary to the Vice President Aditi Chaudhary has also been given a place in the committee of Subordinate legislation, women, and Education.

Sanjay Verma, APS to the V-P has been attached to the government assurance committee. And, personal secretary Sujeet Kumar is in the Commerce committee.

Instagram back after major global outage

Social networking platform Instagram on Thursday said that it has fixed the “technical issue” because of which users were facing trouble accessing the platform.

The company tweeted from its @InstagramComms account: “A technical issue caused people to have trouble accessing Instagram. We resolved this issue for everyone as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

On the online outage monitor website Downdetector, users started reporting the issue earlier on Thursday morning, which peaked at more than 62,000.

According to Downdetector, over 87 percent of people had reported problems while using the application, 10 percent while using the website, and 3 percent while logging in.

Taking to Twitter, several users reported the issue.

While one user said, “Is Instagram down, or is my internet just trash?” another asked, “Am I the only one who Instagram down? Reels and explore page aren’t loading”.

In October last year, Instagram faced an outage that told users that their account was suspended.

Later, the company tweeted: “We’ve resolved this bug now — it was causing people in different parts of the world to have issues accessing their accounts and caused a temporary change for some in the number of followers. Sorry.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese watched the first day of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy test match at the Narendra Modi stadium here on Thursday.

After arriving at the stadium, the leaders took a tour of the facility amid cheers from the amazed spectators. Later, they met their respective cricket team captains — Rohit Sharma and Steve Smith (stand captain) — and watched the game for about 25 minutes together.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was received at the stadium by Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, BCCI chairman Roger Binny, and secretary Jay Shah.

This is the fourth meeting between the two countries leaders since the Australian Prime Minister was elected in 2022. He will be on an India visit till March 11.

Australia is setting up a Deakin University facility at the GIFT city in Gandhinagar. Prime Minister Albanese also launched a scholarship policy for Indian students called, “Maitri”.
