Foxconn committed to set up plant in Telangana, CEO tells CM

0

Foxconn Chairman Young Liu, who was in Hyderabad last week, has written a letter to Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, saying that the Taiwanese contract manufacturing giant is committed to setting up the plant in the state.

“As discussed with you during our meeting on March 2, Foxconn is committed to setting up a manufacturing facility in Kongara Kalan and I seek the support of your team in operationalizing the Kongara Kalan Park as early as possible,” Liu wrote in his letter.

The state government has reportedly offered 200 acres of land to Foxconn to set up the plant at Kongara Kalan, about 35 km from Hyderabad.

Liu also invited KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly known, to visit Taiwan as his personal guest.

A copy of the letter dated March 6 was released by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).

This comes amid reports that Foxconn has denied entering into any binding, definitive agreements for new India investment during its chairman’s recent trip.

“To all the naysayers: Stuff prevails,” tweeted Telangana’s director of electronics Sujai Karampuri, who posted the letter by Young Liu to the chief minister.

The Foxconn chairman thanked KCR for the hospitality extended to him and his team during their visit to Hyderabad.

“I also wish to thank you for your warm birthday wishes and a personalized card. I was indeed inspired by your vision and the efforts toward the transformation and development of Telangana. I now have a new friend in India and I look forward to working with you in the future,” he said.

Liu visited Hyderabad on March 2. He called on KCR and during the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed.

The Telangana government had announced that Foxconn will set up a manufacturing facility with employment generation potential for over one lakh people.

The historic deal has the potential to generate employment for over one lakh people over a period of 10 years, the CMO had said.

“Foxconn’s unit will help in generating large-scale employment to youth and will help in attracting more such industries to the State,” KCR had said.

He said that Telangana considers Taiwan as a natural partner and that the state is glad to be a part of Foxconn’s growth story.

KCR assured Liu that the state government will provide all kinds of support to Foxconn for its operations in the state.

The CMO had quoted the Foxconn chairman as saying that his organization has studied extensively about the state of Telangana. He praised the friendly industrial development ecosystem created in the state.

Liu expressed happiness over the progress achieved by the state in the industrial sector, especially in IT and related electronics sectors, in just eight years.

The chairman said that he is optimistic about the investments of his company in Telangana.

Djokovic withdraws from Indian Wells amid visa row

0

World no. 1 Novak Djokovic has formally withdrawn from the ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells tournament, the organizers said on Monday, which indicates that the Serbs’ application for special permission to enter the US might have been denied.

The Serbian great asked American authorities last month for special permission to enter the United States despite being unvaccinated against the coronavirus.

“World No 1 Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the 2023 BNP Paribas Open. With his withdrawal, Nikoloz Basilashvili moves into the field,” organizers said in a statement.

Unvaccinated air travelers are still prohibited from entering the States until the middle of May. The US vaccine requirement for foreign is not expected to be lifted before the main draw begins at Indian Wells and the Miami Open later in the month.

The 22-time grand slam winner was hopeful of playing in Indian Wells, which starts on Monday, and the Miami Open. His bid to enter the US had even been backed by the US Open and the United States Tennis Association, who had implored the government to make an exception for the tennis great.

“Novak Djokovic is one the greatest champions our sport has ever seen. The USTA and US Open are hopeful that Novak is successful in his petition to enter the country, and that the fans will be able to see him back in action at Indian Wells and Miami,” a post from the US Open Tennis Twitter account read.

The 35-year-old missed last year’s Australian Open as he was deported from the country over his vaccine status. The Serb returned to the tournament in January after Australia lifted its strict vaccine mandate to win his 22nd Grand Slam title, tying the record with Rafael Nadal.

Djokovic’s vaccination status led to him missing both the Australian Open and US Open last year.

The Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi conducted an 11km Cyclothon in partnership with the United Nations in India, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to champion the cause of gender equality and environmental sustainability ahead of the International Women’s Day.

The International Women’s Day Cyclothon witnessed women, men and the transgender community from all walks of life come together for gender equality and for making cities safer and inclusive for women and the transgender community. Mr. Himanshu Gupta, Director, Directorate of Education – Govt of NCT of Delhi said, “It’s very important for us to bring gender equality in our society and we also know that Delhi is facing issues with pollution. So, we thought why not conduct an event which will help us counter both issues? I would like to thank the UN and celebrities, who came forward and associated with us.”

The first Indian woman to win an Olympic Medal Karnam Malleswari also graced the event with her presence. Speaking about the value of sports, the former weightlifter said, “It feels amazing to see so many people come here to take part in the cyclothon. Cycling is great for health and the environment as well. This initiative by the Delhi Government is very important. The government has been supporting the growth of women’s sports a lot. And sport is the best way to achieve gender equality in our society.”

Flagging off the cyclothon, Shombi Sharp, United Nations Resident Coordinator, India, spoke about countering gender inequality and climate change. “Women’s rights are human rights. Yet, as we gather here today, these rights are not consistently afforded to everyone, and especially not to women and girls facing other challenges and crises. Sports, including cycling, is an important enablers of sustainable development. The UN recognizes the growing contribution of sports to the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals, and communities.”

Under the banner of “Unity ride for gender equality, and a cleaner, greener, more sustainable future for all.”

It’s a wonderful honor to be here. I would like to wish everyone a Happy International Women’s Day on behalf of the United Nations. Ensuring gender equality is the most important thing we can do to achieve our collective aspirations. We also have to solve the climate change problem and cycling is an important part of our fight against climate change,” Sharp said.

Simran Arora, consultant – Transgender Division, Backward Division, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, said, “The cyclotron is a great initiative to promote gender equality. I am very excited to be here. Being a transgender, I don’t get a lot of opportunities to be a part of sports events. This cyclotron is an excellent initiative as it promotes gender equality. Our efforts of cycling here might provide opportunities for future generations.”

India’s white-collar sector sees 35% spike in jobs for women: Report

0

India’s white-collar sector has seen a 35 percent spike in job openings for women, compared to last year, according to a report released on Monday.

It is primarily because women, who dropped out of work during the pandemic to become full-time caregivers, have now re-joined the workforce, revealed the report by the talent management platform found (formerly known as Monster jobs).

In addition, the focused efforts by India Inc such as introducing benefits such as menstrual leaves and childcare, introducing programs to fight bias in the workplace, allowing flexibility at work, and diversity-focused hiring, among others are helping increase female participation in the workforce.

The highest demand share of women in the workforce is currently held by the ITES/BPO (36 percent) industry, followed by IT/computers-software (35 percent), and banking/accounting/financial services (22 percent).

Further, Delhi-NCR (21 percent) is leading with the highest percentage of jobs available for women, followed by Mumbai (15 percent), Bengaluru (10 percent), Chennai (9 percent), and Pune (7 percent).

It is also interesting to note that 6 percent of the total women workforce on the platform are those who have taken a career break and returned to work. Moreover, freelance roles account for 4 percent of the total jobs for women, indicating a rise in gig-based opportunities in the white-collar economy.

“There have been many economic success stories of women in the last 50 years, but one of the biggest has been the stride they have made in the labor market. Women leaders worldwide have made headlines for how well they managed to stay afloat in times of great crisis. But there is still work to be done and miles to walk,” said Sekhar Garisa, CEO, and founder (formerly Monster, APAC & ME).

The report also showed that the job roles with the most significant percentage of women are customer service/ call center/BPO at 25 percent. IT roles hold the second largest share at 23 percent, followed by HR roles at 18 percent and sales/ business development at 12 percent.

Across experience levels, women in leadership hold 8 percent of the total share, indicating a great scope for more growth and inclusivity in workplaces.

“There is a radical need for increasing women’s participation in the workforce across all sectors if we were to achieve our dream of becoming a 5 trillion-dollar nation,” Garisa said.

“Companies need to innovate their work modes to ensure flexibility, actively work to foster an inclusive workplace, and ensure that diversity extends beyond their hiring pamphlet,” he added.

Fortnite may soon get first-person mode

0

Popular online video game Fortnite players may be able to engage themselves even further into the game’s world in the coming season, as the game is likely to introduce a first-person mode.

According to reliable Fortnite source HypeX, the mode will be included as a part of the upcoming season of the game.

“Fortnite’s First Person mode is finally coming in NEXT SEASON,” it tweeted.

However, the new mode’s integration into the gameplay is unknown, but it is expected to keep players in first-person mode throughout the game.

There are already a number of guns that offer a first-person view when aiming down the sights; however, a fully-fledged first-person mode would greatly enhance the game.

Meanwhile, Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite, has launched a new mobile app called “Postparty”, which will allow users to capture clips of Fortnite gameplay on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The application comes available for both iOS and Android users.

With this, users can then watch and share the clips to social media, and can also save the clips to their mobile devices.

Users will need to Sign up for the Postparty app with their Epic Games account after downloading it.

0

Indian-American judge Tejal Mehta took oath as the first justice of Ayer District Court in the US state of Massachusetts.

Mehta, who served as an associate justice with the same court, was unanimously selected and sworn in by Judge Stacey Fortes, chief justice of the District Court, on March 2, the Lowell Sun reported.

“I’m confident that with her leadership a that the best is yet to come for the Ayer District Court,” Fortes said.

The ceremony was attended by several members of Mehta’s family, including her 14-year-old daughter Mena Sheth, who was among the ceremony speakers.

“As a lawyer, you can help people, but you can only help them to a point,” Mehta was quoted as saying in the Lowell Sun.

“As a judge, you can do so much more and get to the root of issues and talk to people in such a way that really gets through to them.”

Mehta said her goal is to make a positive impact on the community she has grown close to.

“I have seen the same hopes and despairs in every court I have sat in as a traveling judge. But when you are the first justice, then you can really get to know the community and make a real impact.”

Born to a chemist father and a mother who worked in a hospital, Mehta earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Notre Dame in 1997.

Thereafter, she completed a JD at Boston University School of Law in 2000.

After graduating from law school, Mehta began her legal career as an assistant clerk for the Suffolk County Superior Court.

She then entered into private practice the following year, working as an associate at Gadsby Hannah (2001 to 2002), Cohn & Dussi (2002), and Deutsch, Williams, Brooks, DeRensis & Holland (2002 to 2004).

In 2005, the Indian-American judge joined the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office as an assistant district attorney.

She worked in that capacity until 2016, at which time she opened her own private practice as a sole practitioner.

Her memberships have included the Massachusetts Bar Association and the South Asian Bar Association.

She also sat on the Board of Bar Overseers as well as the Executive Board of the Bedford Montessori School. There are 94 district courts, 13 circuit courts, and one Supreme Court throughout the country.

LS committee to hear oral evidence against Rahul in breach of privilege case

The oral evidence on the breach of privilege against Rahul Gandhi will be heard by the Lok Sabha Privilege Committee on Friday.

The Committee of Privileges has called BJP MP Nishikant Dubey to hear his case.

Dubey along with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Jodhi had given notices of breach of privilege against Rahul Gandhi “for making a misleading, derogatory, unparliamentary and incriminatory statement during a discussion on the motion of thanks on President’s Address in the House on February 7 and a further request for expunction of the impugned statements.

However, sources close to Rahul Gandhi have insisted that he has replied to the notice to the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

The Privilege Committee directed BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who had filed the notice against Rahul Gandhi, to appear before it on March 10 and present his case.

Dubey had sent the notice claiming that Rahul Gandhi had leveled derogatory allegations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi without any evidence and facts during a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the motion of thanks on the President’s address.

Acting on the notice as per the laid down parliamentary convention and rules, the Lok Sabha Secretariat issued the notice to Rahul Gandhi, asking him to reply by February 15.

For many years after Independence, there was no long term vision in health sector: PM

Prime minister Narendra Modi on Monday claimed that for several decades after Independence, there was a lack of an integrated approach and long-term vision in the health sector.

“For several decades after Independence, there was a lack of an integrated approach and a long-term vision in health. We have not kept healthcare restricted only to the health ministry, but have emphasized the whole of the government approach,” he said while addressing a webinar on “Health and Medical Research”.

It has been the endeavor of the Centre, to make medical treatment affordable in India, the Prime Minister added.

“That has been the thought behind providing free medical treatment of upto Rs 5 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Under this, approximately Rs 80,000 crore, that would’ve been spent on medical treatments, were saved,” he said further.

For serious diseases, quality and modern health infrastructure in the country are important, the PM said.

The government’s focus is also on ensuring that people get testing facilities near their homes and there are better facilities for first aid, he added.

For this, he said, 1.5 lakh health and wellness centers are being prepared in the country, the prime minister informed.

Referring to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Prime Minister said that it showed that when such a crisis occurs, even developed systems of prosperous nations collapse.

“World is now much more focussed on health. But India’s approach is not restricted to healthcare, we’re also working on ensuring wellness,” he added.

“Corona also taught us that the supply chain has become a very important matter. When the pandemic was at its peak, for some countries even life-saving things like medicines, vaccines, and medical devices had become weapons,” the Prime Minister noted.

Reminding the audience that India helped many nations by providing vaccines to them, he said, “That’s why we have kept a vision before the world – ‘One Earth, One Health’ – holistic healthcare for everyone.”

Twitter no longer able to protect users from trolls, misinformation

0

As Elon Musk continues to sack Twitter employees, the micro-blogging platform is in no position now to protect users from trolling, state-driven disinformation campaigns, and even child sexual exploitation, the media reported on Monday.

Current and former employees of the company told Media that tools to protect Twitter users from trolling and harassment are proving difficult to maintain with massive layoffs that have hit content safety, moderation, and policy teams hard.

Twitter is down to less than 2,000 employees, from more than 7,500 just a few months ago, as Musk keeps on firing staff.

Hate is now thriving under Musk’s leadership, “with trolls emboldened, harassment intensifying and a spike in accounts following misogynistic and abusive profiles,” the report noted.

The BBC investigation also revealed that child sexual exploitation is on the rise on Twitter and not being sufficiently raised with the law enforcement agencies as it used to be earlier.

The chaos has been created by the huge disruption in staffing, according to employees.

“A totally new person, without the expertise, is doing what used to be done by more than 20 people. That leaves room for much more risk, many more possibilities of things that can go wrong,” an engineer responsible for the computer code that makes Twitter work was quoted as saying.

Harassment campaigns aimed at curbing freedom of expression, and foreign influence operations — once removed daily from the platform — are going “undetected”, a recent employee was quoted as saying in the report.

“Rape survivors have been targeted by accounts that have become more active since the takeover, with indications they’ve been reinstated or newly created,” the report mentioned.

Musk brought in engineers from the electric car company Tesla and asked them to evaluate the engineers’ code over just a few days before deciding who to sack.

Code like that would take “months” to understand.

Users may soon see how much memory each tab using on Chrome

0

Tech giant Google is reportedly working on a new feature for Chrome that will show users how much memory each tab is using.

The information was shared by Chrome expert Leopeva64 on Twitter, reports Android Police.

The new feature will let users know specific memory usage for every open tab when they place the cursor on it.

This feature will be helpful for users when they have opened multiple tabs, as it will help them decide which tabs to close.

Last month, the tech giant had rolled out the Memory and Energy Saver modes for Chrome on Mac, Windows, Linux, as well as Chromebooks.

Chrome’s Memory Saver automatically “frees up memory from inactive tabs” to give other pages and apps on users’ computers more resources. And, with Energy Saver, “Chrome conserves battery power by limiting background activity and visual effects”.

Meanwhile, it was reported that the company was working on a new feature for Chrome that will allow users to erase the last 15 minutes of browsing data, on Android.

PVL: Bengaluru Torpedoes were little bit ‘apprehensive’ and ‘scared’ at times, says coach David Lee after losing final

0

Olympic Champion and Bengaluru Torpedoes Head Coach David Lee have admitted that his team was a “little bit apprehensive” in the finals of Prime Volleyball League (PVL) against Ahmedabad Defenders here at the Regional Sports Centre.

Ahmedabad Defenders clinched the trophy in the second season of PVL with a 15-7, 15-10, 18-20, 13-15, 15-10 win over the Bengaluru Torpedoes on Sunday. It was Ahmedabad’s second consecutive final, losing the first one against Kolkata Thunderbolts last season.

The Bengaluru Torpedoes Head Coach feels Ahmedabad Defenders had an edge over his side because the team from Gujarat was playing its second final.

“Experience of playing the final gives an edge, my guys were a little bit apprehensive, a little bit scared at times and that was a little bit apprehensive at times in the finals,” David Lee told Media.

“During the season they (Bengaluru Torpedoes) were pretty fearless, going into the third set (in the PVL finals), the comeback they had I’m really proud of the way they fought but Ahmedabad played better than us. Bengaluru should be really proud of how they played this year,” he added.

David Lee, a three-time Olympian, who is regarded as one of the best volleyball players of the modern generation, wants Bengaluru Torpedoes to improve on all the technicalities and go the next step further in the third season.

“The biggest learning we can take away from this season is making a commitment as an individual player to have better ball control, to have a better pass to better settings, better defense. We had a lot of setting errors and that’s one of the biggest issues,” said David Lee.

“We are ready for the third season, we are a young team, the team we just played was in the finals last year. They understand pressure, the experience of playing final for my team is huge and we will get better next year,” he added.

Pankaj, the captain of Bengaluru Torpedoes, said due a slight mistake in the crunch situation of the match, turned the match in favor of Ahmedabad Defenders.

“We had a good tournament, we lost two matches at the beginning but we made a good comeback after rectifying the mistakes. The final was a good match, here also we made a comeback but due to a slight mistake we lost the fifth set and hence the final,” Pankaj told Media.

After the finals, players of Bengaluru Torpedoes, got a “Guard of Honour” from Ahmedabad Defenders before receiving their medals as the second season of the Prime Volleyball League came to an end.

Verstappen cruises to F1 Bahrain Grand Prix win

0

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen started the 2023 Formula 1 season as he had finished 2022, scoring an ominously easy win in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

Having dominated the 2022 season, Red Bull’s pre-season testing form had suggested that they would remain the team to beat in 2023, and that assertion was borne out when Verstappen and Sergio Perez locked out the front row in Saturday’s qualifying session, reports Xinhua news agency.

Leading the field away from pole position, Verstappen was never threatened as he eased to his first-ever victory at the Bahrain International Circuit.

Behind Verstappen, Perez made it a Red Bull 1-2. The Mexican had lost second place to Charles Leclerc at the start but took the position back by passing the Ferrari on Lap 26.

The final podium place went to a resurgent Fernando Alonso on his first outing for Aston Martin, after surviving contact on Lap 1 from teammate Lance Stroll. The 41-year-old rolled back the years with ambitious overtakes on Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz to underline the big step forward that Aston Martin appears to have made in 2023.

Behind the top three, Sainz took fourth, but Ferrari must be concerned at how far off Red Bull’s pace they already appear to be. The Scuderia’s woes were exacerbated by Leclerc’s failure to finish after the Monegasque pulled off with a power unit issue while running third on Lap 41.

Lewis Hamilton took fifth for Mercedes, whose W14 also does not currently look capable of challenging Red Bull’s dominance. Indeed, team boss Toto Wolff took the unusual step of publicly acknowledging on Saturday that the W14 will not be truly competitive in its current form, adding that the team may elect to change the car’s entire concept.

The second round of the 2023 Formula 1 season is the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on March 19.

S.Korea offers compensation for victims of Japan’s wartime forced labour

0

The South Korean government on Monday formally proposed compensating more than a dozen victims of Japan’s wartime forced labor through a Seoul-backed public foundation, instead of direct payment from responsible Japanese firms.

The proposal announced by Foreign Minister Park Jin is intended to resolve the issue of compensating 15 Koreans who won legal battles against two Japanese firms accused of mobilizing them for hard labor during World War II, reports Yonhap News Agency.

In 2018, South Korea’s Supreme Court ordered Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and Nippon Steel Corp. to pay them compensation.

Under President Yoon Suk-yeol’s administration scheme, the Foundation for Victims of Forced Mobilization, affiliated with the Interior Ministry, will collect “voluntary” donations from the private sector.

It also plans to use the foundation, created in 2014, to compensate other plaintiffs who win pending cases.

The government is expected to seek donations from South Korean companies that benefited from a 1965 bilateral treaty, such as steelmaker POSCO, under which Tokyo offered $300 million in grants to Seoul.

Still, victims and supporting civic groups have strongly protested the plan floated earlier during a public hearing.

Tokyo has maintained that all reparation issues related to Japan’s 1910-45 colonization of Korea were settled in a 1965 deal to normalize bilateral diplomatic ties.

The neighboring countries held several rounds of official talks on the thorny matter over the past several months in line with the conservative Yoon administration’s push for strengthening the trilateral security partnership with the US and Japan to counter North Korea’s military threats.

The two sides have tentatively agreed to create a “future youth fund” to sponsor scholarships for students, an informed source said.

Meanwhile, Seoul’s top diplomat expressed hope in a statement that the two nations will honor a 1998 joint declaration adopted by then President Kim Dae-Jung and then Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi.

In the declaration, the two leaders called for overcoming the past and building new relations, with Obuchi expressing remorse for the “horrendous damage and pain” Japan’s colonial rule inflicted on the Korean people.

Families of those on board MH370 urge new search for missing plane

0

The plane passengers of Malaysia aircraft MH370 which has been lost on March 8, 2014, Families of those travelers are urging the government in Kuala Lumpur to begin fresh hunting for the particular flight.

In 2018, the Malaysian government engaged US seabed exploration firm Ocean Infinity to search for the aircraft in the southern Indian Ocean, offering to pay up to $70 million if it found the plane, reports media. But its operation came up short.

The firm was deployed came after Malaysia, China, and Australia ended a fruitless two-year $135 million underwater hunt in January 2017 after finding no trace of the plane.

On Sunday, Voice370 — a grouping of relatives of those aboard the plane — said Ocean Infinity hoped to embark on a new search as early as this summer and urged the Malaysian government to accept any proposals from the firm on a conditional fee basis, such that the firm would only be paid if successful.

“Ocean Infinity, over the last 12 months has made real progress working with many people to further understand… The events in 2014,” CNN quoted Voice370 as saying in a statement, following a memorial event to mark the ninth year since MH370’s disappearance.

“Ultimately, this has greatly improved their chances of conducting a successful search.”

In a message to read out at the memorial event, Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke vowed not to “close the book” on MH370, adding that due consideration would be given to future searches if there was “new and credible information” on the aircraft’s potential location.

Debris confirmed or believed to be from the MH370 aircraft has washed up along the African coast and on islands in the Indian Ocean.

Malaysian investigators previously drew no conclusion about what happened aboard the flight but did not rule out the possibility that the aircraft had been deliberately taken off course.

Malaysia Airlines flight 370 with 227 passengers and 12 crew aboard, disappeared on March 8, 2014, while flying from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Beijing.

The crew of the Boeing 777-200ER registered as 9M-MRO, last communicated with air traffic control (ATC) around 38 minutes after takeoff when the flight was over the South China Sea.

The aircraft was lost from ATC radar screens minutes later but was tracked by military radar for another hour, deviating westward from its planned flight path, crossing the Malay Peninsula and the Andaman Sea.

The disappearance of flight 370 was the deadliest incident involving a Boeing 777 and the deadliest in Malaysia Airlines’ history until it was surpassed in both regards by Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which was shot down while flying over eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014.

ISRO, CNES to bring down climate satellite in controlled manner on Tuesday

0

Indian space agency on Tuesday will bring down its decommissioned satellite Megha-Tropiques-1 (MT1) in a controlled manner along with the French space agency CNES.

The satellite is to impact an uninhabited location in the Pacific Ocean, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said.

According to ISRO, it is gearing up for a challenging experiment of controlled re-entry of a decommissioned low Earth-orbiting satellite, namely Megha-Tropiques-1 (MT1), on March 7, 2023.

MT1 was launched on October 12, 2011, as a joint satellite venture of ISRO and the French space agency, CNES for tropical weather and climate studies.

Although the mission life of the satellite originally was to three years, the satellite continued to provide valuable data services for more than a decade supporting regional and global climate models till 2021.

The ISRO said the UN/IADC space debris mitigation guidelines recommend deorbiting an LEO (Low Earth Orbit) object at its end-of-life, preferably through controlled re-entry to a safe impact zone, or by bringing it to an orbit where the orbital lifetime is less than 25 years.

It is also recommended to carry out the “passivation” of onboard energy sources to minimize the risk of any post-mission accidental break-up.

The orbital lifetime of MT1, weighing about 1,000 kg, would have been more than 100 years in its 20-degree inclined operational orbit of 867 km altitude.

About 125 kg of onboard fuel remained unutilized at its end-of-mission which could pose risks for an accidental break-up.

This left-over fuel was estimated to be sufficient to achieve a fully controlled atmospheric re-entry to impact an uninhabited location in the Pacific Ocean, ISRO said.

Controlled re-entries involve deorbiting to very low altitudes to ensure impact occurs within a targeted safe zone.

Usually, large satellites/rocket bodies, which are likely to survive aero-thermal fragmentation upon re-entry, are made to undergo controlled re-entry to limit ground casualty risk.

However, all such satellites are specifically designed to undergo controlled re-entry at end-of-life, ISRO said.

MT1 was not designed for end-of-life (EOL) operations through controlled re-entry which made the entire exercise extremely challenging.

Furthermore, the onboard constraints of the aged satellite, where several systems had lost redundancy and showed degraded performance, and maintaining subsystems under harsher environmental conditions at much lower than originally designed orbital altitude added to the operational complexities.

“Innovative workarounds were implemented by the operations team based on the study, deliberations, and exchanges among the mission, operations, flight dynamics, aerodynamics, propulsion, controls, navigation, thermal, and other sub-system design teams across the ISRO centers, who worked in synergy to surmount these challenges,” the Indian space agency said.

An uninhabited area in the Pacific Ocean between 5 degrees S to 14 degrees S latitude and 119 degrees W to 100 degrees W longitude was identified as the targeted re-entry zone for MT1.

Since Aug 2022, 18 orbit maneuvers were performed to progressively lower the orbit.

In between the de-orbiting, aero-braking studies at different solar panel orientations were also carried out to gain better insights into the physical process of atmospheric drag affecting the orbital decay of the satellite.

The final de-boost strategy has been designed after taking into consideration several constraints, including visibility of the re-entry trace over ground stations, ground impact within the targeted zone, and allowable operating conditions of subsystems, especially the maximum deliverable thrust and the maximum firing duration of the thrusters.

The final two de-boost burns followed by the ground impact are expected to take place between 16.30 IST to 19.30 IST on March 7.

“Aero-thermal simulations show that no large fragments of the satellites are likely to survive the aerothermal heating during the re-entry,” ISRO said.

As a responsible space agency committed to safe and sustainable operations in outer space, ISRO proactively takes efforts for better compliance with the UN/IADC space debris mitigation guidelines on post-mission disposal of LEO objects.

The re-entry experiment of MT1 has been undertaken as a part of the ongoing efforts as this satellite with sufficient left-over fuel presented a unique opportunity to test the relevant methodologies and understand the associated operational nuances of post-mission disposal by direct re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.
