Canada to probe Chinese interference in recent polls

0

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that an independent special rapporteur will probe alleged Chinese interference in their recent elections.

The appointed investigator will review classified reports about the 2019 and 2021 federal elections and will make recommendations for future contests, the BBC reported. Rival political party leaders have called for a public inquiry.

China has denied any election interference, calling the claims “purely baseless and defamatory”.

Speaking to reporters on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Monday, Trudeau said the reports challenging Canada’s “sovereignty” are alarming, and “strike us to our very core as Canadians”, the Media reported.

“I will be appointing an independent special rapporteur, who will have a wide mandate and make expert recommendations on combating interference and strengthening our democracy,” he said.

The rapporteur has not yet been chosen, he said, adding that the appointment will be made in the coming days.

Trudeau also said he would ask members of parliament and senators in the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (Nsicop) to begin a review of foreign interference and to report its findings to parliament.

He added that Canada has long been aware of meddling attempts by China, as well as Iran and Russia, the Media reported.

The countries, as well as several other non-state actors, “have attempted to interfere not only in our democracy but our country in general”.

A series of reports in the Globe and Mail newspaper and broadcaster Global News in recent weeks, based on leaks from Canadian intelligence sources, detailed alleged attempts by China’s Communist Party to interfere in the last two federal elections, BBC reported.

Chinese officials have dismissed the reports as “purely baseless and defamatory” and as “hype”.

Conservative politicians have said publicly they were aware of interference in 2021 race, and believe it had cost them several seats — though not enough to change the election result, which Mr. Trudeau’s Liberals won with a 41-seat lead, the Media reported.

Adenovirus alarm: Bengal CM says death figure is 19

0

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has claimed the death figure for children admitted to hospitals with Adenovirus-related symptoms to be 19, out of which six are confirmed cases of Adenovirus.

According to her, the remaining 13 mishaps were aided by comorbidities.

Rubbishing the looming alarm over Adenovirus in the state, the chief minister said that although the virus has affected one member of her family also, she had not publicized it. However, she did not divulge the details of her family member who has been affected by the virus.

However, unofficial figures have claimed the death figure for children admitted to hospitals with related symptoms to be 45 in the last ten days. As per the unofficial figures, till late Sunday afternoon, the figure was 40. In the interim period from Sunday afternoon till late Monday evening, five more child deaths with related symptoms have been reported, taking the figure to 45 in the last ten days. But, the administration has not confirmed this.

Sources said that most of the deaths have been reported from B.C. Roy Children’s Hospital is the prime hospital in Kolkata with a specialization in pediatric treatment. Similar reports had come from private hospitals as well. “Though all the death cases were not confirmed cases of Adenovirus, surely all these children were admitted with related flu-like symptoms like cold, fever, breathing problems, and sore throat, among others,” said an official from the state health department.

According to him, since so far there is approved medicine or any specific- line for the treatment of Adenovirus, the factor is adding hitches to the process of treatment in such cases. The virus can spread through skin contact, by air through coughing and sneezing, and through an infected person’s stools.

The state health department has already issued an advisory for doctors, especially pediatricians, to take special care of children being admitted with flu-like symptoms, especially those aged two years or below since they are most vulnerable to being affected by Adenovirus.

ISRO simulates deployment of Gaganyaan mission parachutes

0

Indian space agency successfully conducted the Rail Track Rocket Sled deployment tests of the Gaganyaan Pilot and Apex Cover Separation (ACS) parachutes in cluster configurations, said Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

According to ISRO, the tests were carried out at the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL), Chandigarh, on March 1 and 3, 2023.

Gaganyaan is the name for India’s first human space mission. The Indian space agency said the first test simulated the clustered deployment of two pilot parachutes.

One parachute was subjected to a minimum angle with respect to flow conditions and the second parachute was subjected to a maximum angle with respect to flow.

These pilot parachutes are used in the Gaganyaan mission to extract and deploy the main parachutes independently.

The second test simulated the clustered deployment of two ACS parachutes under maximum dynamic pressure conditions.

“The test also simulated clustered deployment at a 90-degree angle of attack conditions for the crew module. The ACS parachutes are used in the Gaganyaan mission for the separation of the apex cover mounted on the Crew Module. Both pilot and ACS parachutes were deployed using a pyrotechnic mortar device,” ISRO said.

The Gaganyaan parachute system development has been a joint effort by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram, and Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra.

It’s a great chance to expose players to different situations, says Buttler on experiments in final ODI against Bangladesh

0

After slipping to a 50-run defeat in the third ODI against Bangladesh in Chattogram, England captain Jos Buttler suggested that the result mattered for little after seizing an opportunity to evaluate his options that could prove successful on a surface that may be similar to those at the World Cup in India, which starts in October.

England had already secured the series victory after winning the first two games but the hosts lost the chance to complete a series sweep by losing the final ODI on Monday.

In the final ODI, England chose to go with a couple of changes in their line-up, where legspinner Rehan Ahmed made his white-ball debut, and all-rounder Sam Curran was promoted up in the batting order, coming in ahead of Buttler at No.5 and contributed 23 runs to a fourth-wicket stand of 49 with James Vince.

“We changed a few things today and gave an opportunity to people in different ways, but I thought the intensity was still there,” Buttler told reporters.

“There was an opportunity today to give Rehan a debut, and for Sam to bat at No. 5, and this is the last ODI we play now until September. So, especially in these conditions, it felt like a great chance to gather as much information as we can, and expose people to different situations. If we lost the game, then so be it.”

The English skipper added that England’s victory in the T20 World Cup in Australia had given him confidence that the squad that comes together in India in seven months’ time will be able to call upon similar experience to overcome their lack of physical preparation.

“Looking back to the T20 World Cup, we probably went into that World Cup having never played our perceived best XI. But then to get into the tournament and go on to win it, that gives you great confidence that, even though we haven’t had the opportunities to always play our best team, international cricket has become (more) focused on the ICC tournaments. I think that’s the way we’re building toward that. And we know that, come to the World Cup, we will have the opportunity to pick from everyone who’s available,” Buttler said.

Sacked women tech employees need to upskill, stay relevant: Experts

0

As tech layoffs affect hundreds of women employees too, top behavioral experts on Tuesday said those who have been laid off need to have a good support system and realize that it’s not their fault.

Many women tech employees have lost their jobs in the recent layoffs.

According to experts, women have always felt a lot of pressure with fewer outlets to let out their stress as they try to bottle their emotions, trying to create a work-home balance, take care of their families and ignore their mental health.

According to Tara Mehta, Clinical Psychologist, Department of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, Fortis Hospitals, Mumbai, losing jobs to layoffs is going to cause some amount of stress and dysfunction in one’s life.

“It’s very natural for this to have an impact on any individual gender. It’s going to cause some amount of disharmony in their plans for the future. It’s going to result in anxiety and stress and all these are natural, regardless of the gender,” Mehta told IA.

“These times can be stressful, which is why staying connected with family and friends who radiate positive energy is crucial,” she noted.

Divya Mohindroo, Founder, of Embrace Imperfections and a counseling psychologist, told Media that as a working woman, she would suggest that the fastest way to end your pain and suffering of any kind, specially with matters related to stress and anxiety is to accept the reality of what is occurring even if it feels bad.

“Professionally, I would suggest that start making a list of potential employers, research about available opportunities and companies, look for avenues to upskill, and even diversify into other sectors,” Mohindroo told Media.

Approach employers while being mentally prepared to describe their situation while pitching their candidature.

“It is also important to network with friends, ex-bosses, and colleagues to ease your situation and understand that many people like you are sailing in the same boat and every individual has their own set of problems that is why self-pity is not feeling to stay with,” she elaborated.

More than three lakh tech employees have lost jobs in recent months globally, including thousands in India.

According to Vishakha Bhalla, Clinical Psychologist at Max Hospital Gurgaon, they need to gather strength from past obstacles in life and affirm to themselves that they are capable of getting through this as before.

“Get busy with small and achievable goals that will make you ready to accomplish bigger things. Make a list of pros and cons of this situation and analyze what can be changed and how you can approach with alternative but practical solutions,” said Bhalla.

Start your day with optimism through physical exercise/yoga/meditation to release muscle tension.

Shreya Chakraborty, CEO and Founder, of Techfin, an ed-tech startup, told IANS that preparing for the future by investing in rebuilding and reshaping ourselves with regard to skills instead of going through repetitive thoughts of regrets of job loss is the way forward.

“This is the time to upskill with new technologies and be relevant. Instead of regretting the loss, consider this as an opportunity to do self-development both mentally and technically,” said Chakraborty.

I-League: TRAU win to keep third-place hopes alive

0

Tiddim Road Athletic Union (TRAU FC) kept the chances of finishing third in the I-League alive with a 4-2 victory over relegated Mumbai Kenkre FC at the Cooperage Stadium here.

If they win their last match and Gokulam Kerala drops points, the Imphal side will take on the eighth-placed side of the league on April 5 in the Super Cup.

The final score looks comfortable for coach Leimapokpam Nandakumar Singh, but the win did not come easy. His boys fell behind twice but came strongly on both occasions and turned the match on its head, scoring three goals within 13 minutes of each other.

The home team went ahead in the 11th minute as Nigerian forward Francis Nwankwo headed in Ranjeet Pandre’s long cross from the right wing. But the joy was shortlived as TRAU hit back just two minutes later. Their Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho’s scorching left-footer from outside the box hit the lower part of the crossbar and landed in the net to make it 1-1.

A bit of luck went Mumbai Kenkre’s way early in the second half as a TRAU defender handled Pandre’s cross inside the box. Samandar Ochilov made no mistake in making it 2-1 from the spot. It took TRAU 12 minutes to equalize again. This time Fernandinho’s corner from the right flank was headed by his countryman Gerson Vieira but it hit the post. Baoringdao Bodo put the rebound into the net. He scored his second and the team’s third in the 73rd minute with a header off Fernandinho’s cross from the left.

The final nail in Kenkre’s coffin came from substitute Buanthanglun Samte in the 79th minute. Kenkre goalkeeper Padam Chettri did manage to get a hand to Samte’s left footer from outside the box. But it had too much power to be stopped. Kenkre was saved from further embarrassment in stoppage time as Bidyananda Singh’s shot hit the post.

With this win, TRAU is on 32 points – just one behind third-placed Gokulam.

WhatsApp to clearly outline how its privacy updates will affect EU users

0

Meta-owned WhatsApp has committed to being more transparent on changes to its terms of service in the European Union.

The European Commission said in a statement that the company will make it easier for users to reject updates when they disagree with them, and will clearly explain when such rejection leads the user to no longer be able to use WhatsApp’s services.

Also, WhatsApp confirmed that users’ personal data are not shared with third parties or other Meta companies — including Facebook — for advertising purposes.

“I welcome WhatsApp’s commitments to changing its practices to comply with EU rules, actively informing users of any changes to their contract, and respecting their choices instead of asking them each time they open the app,” said Didier Reynders, Commissioner for Justice.

“Consumers have a right to understand what they agree to and what that choice entails concretely so that they can decide whether they want to continue using the platform,” Reynders said in a statement late on Monday.

The Consumer Protection Cooperation Network (CPC) will actively monitor how WhatsApp implements these commitments when making any future updates to its policies and, where necessary, enforce compliance – including by the possibility of imposing fines.

A recent European Commission study showed that many companies use “dark patterns”, for example making it more difficult to unsubscribe from a service than to subscribe to it.

The CPC Network first sent a letter to WhatsApp in January 2022, following an alert by the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) and eight of its member associations on alleged unfair practices in the context of WhatsApp’s updates to their terms of service and privacy policy.

Indian-American pleads guilty in $20 mn fraud scheme

0

A 38-year-old Indian-American has pleaded guilty to charges related to almost $20 million in fraud that he perpetrated while on federal pretrial release for another crime.

Nikesh Ajay Patel of Florida was charged with 13 counts, including one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, three counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, and eight counts of money laundering.

He faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in federal prison for each count of conspiracy and wire fraud, and up to 20 years imprisonment for each money laundering count, according to a Department of Justice release.

His sentencing date has not yet been scheduled, Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced on Monday.

According to court documents, Patel, who was charged in 2014 by the US Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Illinois for a $179 million fraud scheme, was arrested and released on bond.

For the next several years, Patel claimed that he was cooperating with authorities and using his business skills to get funds to repay some of what he owed.

In fact, Patel had devised a new scheme that netted him almost $20 million.

As part of his three-part fraud scheme, Patel first fabricated fraudulent loan documents that falsely represented that a bank in Miami had authorized loans to be made to convert hotels in rural areas into assisted living facilities.

Although the bank in Miami exists, it had never made any loans.

The person who was listed as signing the loans (“Ron Elias”) was a fictitious identity used by Patel to perpetrate his conspiracy and scheme.

Second, Patel applied to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to guarantee the fake loans pursuant to its Business and Industry Guaranteed Loan Program.

Finally, after the USDA agreed to guarantee the fake loans, Patel sold the guaranteed portion of the fake loans to the Federal Agricultural Mortgage Corporation, also known as Farmer Mac.

Patel executed the scheme on three occasions, receiving almost $20 million in proceeds.

He used a portion of the funds from that scheme to pay some of his restitution, but he was saving much of it to flee the US.

Three days prior to his sentencing in the Northern District of Illinois in 2018, Patel was arrested at the airport in Kissimmee.

He had chartered a flight to Ecuador, where he intended to request political asylum and live off the proceeds that he had obtained from his new scheme.

Instead, Patel’s bond was revoked and the US Marshals Service transported him to the Northern District of Illinois.

On March 6, 2018, he was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for his case in the Northern District of Illinois.

4 US citizens kidnapped in Mexico in case of mistaken identity

0

Four US citizens who had traveled to the Mexican border city of Matamoros for medical procedures were assaulted and kidnapped in a case of mistaken identity, an informed official said.

The official told Media on Monday that the incident occurred on March 3, adding that investigators believe a Mexican cartel likely mistook the victims for Haitian drug smugglers.

The investigators have not identified any concerning criminal history on the part of the Americans, the official added.

In a statement, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said: “The information we have is that they crossed the border to buy medicines in Mexico, there was a confrontation between groups and they were detained…

“The whole government is working on it.”

Meanwhile, the FBI said that the missing Americans, who are yet to be identified, drove into Matamoros on March 3 in a white minivan with North Carolina plates.

There, they were fired upon by unidentified gunmen and were “placed in a vehicle and taken from the scene by armed men”, CNN quoted the agency as saying.

A Mexican citizen was killed in the encounter, US Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar said.

“We have no higher priority than the safety of our citizens. This is the most fundamental role of the US government. Officials from various US law enforcement agencies are working with Mexican authorities at all levels of government to achieve the safe return of our compatriots,” he said on Monday.

The FBI is seeking the public’s help in finding them and identifying those responsible and also announced a reward of $50,000 for their return and the arrest of those involved.

Matamoros, a city of more than 500,000 people, is located across the Rio Grande from Brownsville, Texas, Media reported.

The US State Department has issued a “Level 4: Do Not Travel” advisory for US citizens thinking of going to Tamaulipas, citing organized crime “including gun battles, murder, armed robbery, carjacking, kidnapping, forced disappearances, extortion, and sexual assault — is common along the northern border”.

Criminal groups have targeted buses as well as cars driving through the state, often taking passengers and asking for ransom payments in an area where local law enforcement has limited ability to respond to crime, it added.

The US government estimates that hundreds of thousands of Americans cross the border into Mexico each year to receive healthcare services, including prescription drugs.

The majority of Americans cite cheaper costs as the most common reason to get treatment abroad.

FBI hunts woman who didn’t show up to court over Capitol riot charges

0

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched a search for a woman who did not show up to a court in Washington, D.C. when she was set to go to trial on federal charges related to January 6, 2021, US Capitol riot.

According to District Judge Carl Nichols, Olivia Pollock from Florida was scheduled to appear on Monday at 9 a.m., but she “failed to appear”, reports Media.

Nichols ruled that as a result, the trial would proceed with two of Pollock’s co-defendants and she would be tried separately.

According to a warrant issued for her arrest, court officials have not been able to locate Pollock since late February.

The government’s search for Pollock was largely kept under wraps until she did not show up for her trial.

Speaking to Media on Monday, Pollock’s lawyer, Elita Amato, said that her client “had been diligently assisting in her defense for her upcoming trial prior to her disappearance”, and that Amato is “ready to assist and guide her in resolving her bench warrant before the Court”.

Pollock is the third defendant charged as part of a group of Floridians accused of attacking police at the Capitol to become a fugitive, reports Media.

Her brother, Jonathan Pollock, has evaded authorities since he was first charged in July 2021.

The FBI is offering a $15,000 reward for information on his whereabouts.

An arrest warrant for another of Pollock’s co-defendants, Joseph Hutchinson, was also unsealed on Monday.

Nichols previously ruled that Hutchinson, who is representing himself, would be tried separately from other co-defendants and he is not scheduled to begin his trial until later this year.

Hutchinson was on home detention, and Pollock was subject to GPS monitoring.

Hutchinson, Olivia, and Jonathan Pollock are facing several charges for what prosecutors allege was a coordinated assault on several police officers.

Hutchinson and Olivia Pollock have pleaded not guilty. Jonathan Pollock has not entered a formal plea.

UN chief calls for actions to close gender gaps in innovation

0

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for actions to close gender gaps in science, technology, and innovation, saying women’s full contributions will benefit all.

“The math is simple: without the insights and creativity of half the world, science, and technology will fulfill just half their potential,” Guterres on Monday told the opening of the 67th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The priority theme of the two-week meeting is “innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls”, Xinhua news agency reported.

The theme could not be more timely, Guterres said, “because as technology races ahead, women and girls are being left behind.”

Three billion people are still unconnected to the Internet, and the majority of them are women and girls in developing countries. In the tech industry, men outnumber women two to one, and in the field of artificial intelligence, only about one out of five workers is a woman, he said.

He pointed to “centuries of patriarchy, discrimination, and harmful stereotypes” that have created a huge gender gap in science and technology, noting that women account for just 3 percent of Nobel Prize winners in science categories.

“Promoting women’s full contributions to science, technology, and innovation is not an act of charity or a favor to women. It is a must and it benefits everyone,” the UN chief stressed.

For example, when women scientists and technologists tackle global problems, they multiply the chance of finding solutions, he said.

Guterres urged increasing education, income, and employment for women and girls, particularly in the Global South.

He also called for promoting women’s and girls’ full participation and leadership in science and technology, from governments to board rooms and classrooms, as well as creating a safe digital environment for women and girls.

“The meeting this year comes at a time when women’s rights are being abused, threatened, and violated around the world,” said Guterres, warning that “progress won over decades is vanishing before our eyes” and “gender equality is growing more distant”.

“Let’s be clear: global frameworks are not working for the world’s women and girls. They need to change,” he said.

Branch office of WTC to be opened soon in Kolkata: Mamata

0

A branch office of New York’s renowned World Trade Center will be opened in Kolkata shortly, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday.

“A team of their representatives will be coming to Kolkata on March 21. They will sign a memorandum of understanding with the state government on this count. This will strengthen our ties with the international business communities in the coming days,” she told the mediapersons.

She said “Kolkata acts as an important gateway to entire eastern India”.

“That is why this city has been chosen as the principal city of eastern India. We too want Kolkata to be the principal corridor of industrial activities in the eastern part of the country,” the Chief Minister said.

She also said that the process for identifying the land for setting up the branch office of the World Trade Center has already started.

“This is really a matter of pride for our city that it has got the preference over all other eastern Indian cities in the matter,” the Chief Minister added.

Twitter breaks for millions as only 1 engineer left handling crucial APIs

0

Twitter went down for millions as users reported several issues with the platform — from links not opening to images stopped loading and more — as there was only one person handling the platform’s application programming interface (API).

When users clicked on links, they were greeted with a mysterious error message reporting that “your current API plan does not include access to this endpoint”.

Images stopped loading as well and some users said that they could not access TweetDeck.

About 85 percent of users had trouble with the web version of Twitter while 13 percent had issues with the mobile platform.

In a tweet, the company said that “some parts of Twitter may not be working as expected right now”.

The company’s support account tweeted, “We made an internal change that had some unintended consequences.”

The change in question was part of a project to shut down free access to the Twitter API, according to Platformer.

Last month, Twitter announced it will no longer support free access to its API.

It ended the existence of third-party clients and drastically limited the ability of outside researchers to study the network.

The change had cascading consequences inside the company, bringing down much of Twitter’s internal tools along with the public-facing APIs, reports The Verge.

Musk tweeted on Tuesday: “A small API change had massive ramifications”.

“The code stack is extremely brittle for no good reason. Will ultimately need a complete rewrite,” he posted.

There have been at least six high-profile Twitter outages this year, as Musk has fired thousands of employees, including those handling APIs and codes.

Meta sees strong trend in women entrepreneurs using its apps in India

0

Meta (formerly Facebook) on Monday said that it has continued to see a strong trend towards women entrepreneurs using its apps in India over the last three years.

About 73 percent of Instagram business accounts that self-identify as a women-owned business were set up in the last three years in India, the company revealed.

In addition, 53 percent of all business pages on Facebook with female admins were also set up in the last three years in the country.

“It’s heartening to see more women kickstart their entrepreneurial journeys with the help of digital technologies, and we’re humbled that we play a part in this journey,” Archana Vohra, Director, Small and Medium Business for Meta in India, said in a statement.

“What is great to see is that the momentum gained during the pandemic continues even post-pandemic. Our commitment remains to unlock growth for India’s small businesses, and enabling women entrepreneurs is a big part of that commitment,” she added

Moreover, the tech giant said that women are also playing a critical role in supporting each other by forming communities.

On Meta, 40 percent of Facebook groups related to entrepreneurship have been created by women in the last three years.

Women have also made strides in the tech and creative space, the company mentioned.

In India, 23 percent of Spark AR creators publishing effects for Facebook and Instagram are women, showing a promising sign of progress.

Spark AR lets businesses create and share augmented reality experiences that reach billions of people using Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram.
