Shreyas Talpade’s Italian co-star Giorgia Andriani plays Holi for the first time

Italian actress Giorgia Andriani, who made her Bollywood debut with Shreyas Talpade’s ‘Welcome To Bajrangpur’, said that she is quite close to the culture and traditions of India and that she is attached to Mumbai after staying in in the city for six years.

Giorgia spoke about her Holi celebration plans and her affinity with the heritage of India.

She said: “I have been in Mumbai for the past six years now, and I am particularly attached to the city, it’s just the feeling. It’s true. Mumbai sucks you in and does not allow you to go anywhere else. I love the festivities and the culture here and now I call it my home.”

Giorgia continued: “Last year, I played holi for the first time and I loved it. There’s something about this festival, the smell of freshly cooked nankeens, pichkaris, and colors! It’s like a party in the city! Everywhere you go, people are enjoying themselves, having fun.”

The actress further added: “Since I have been here so long, surrounded by this amazing culture, people, and food, I was bound to feel a sense of belonging to this place. I am learning Marathi now, or at least trying as its grammar is really complex.

AAP raises objections over Sisodia being kept in Tihar Jail number 1

0

After the Rouse Avenue Court sent Manish Sisodia to judicial custody till March 20 in connection with the excise policy case, the Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday raised objections over the former deputy chief minister being kept in Tihar Jail number 1.

While Sisodia has been kept in jail number 1, AAP’s Satyendar Jain is lodged in jail number 7 of Tihar. Jail number 1 is the oldest on the Tihar premises. The former Deputy CM is lodged in ward number 9 of Jail number 1 with some dreaded criminals as neighbors.

“Today, on the auspicious festival of Holi, the enmity of BJP has reached such an extent with the AAP that Manish Sisodia who gave an education model, has been kept in jail among such dreaded criminals that we are afraid of his murder,” alleged AAP leader Sanjay Singh while addressing media on Wednesday.

Singh further asked that when there is an order from the court that he should be kept in the Vipassana cell, then why the court order is not being followed? No first-time prisoner is ever kept in jail number one, he said.

“First our health minister and now our education minister has been put behind bars. CBI continuously raided but nothing was found. Sisodia is not even named in the charge sheet, yet he is named as the main conspirator,” Singh said.

“I also want to warn the jail officials not to get trapped in the conspiracy of the BJP. Many murders have taken place in the jail, so we have apprehensions about his murder,” the AAP leader said.

“Manish Sisodia was to be kept in Vipassana cell by the order of the court, but why is he being kept with such dangerous criminals? Today we do not have Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain among us but we are more concerned whether the central government will conspire for political murders,” AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj said.

Women’s Day: India calls attention to terrorism that affects them most

0

India has called attention to the rampant violence perpetrated against women by terrorists and reinforced the demands for zero tolerance for terrorism.

Speaking at the Security Council on Tuesday, India’s Permanent Representative Ruchira Kamboj said that “women and girls suffer invariably and disproportionately” from terrorism and violent extremism that are the biggest violators of human rights.

“Violence against women and girls perpetrated by terrorists remains rampant” while being “a persistent threat to global peace and security”, she said.

While the Council was holding a debate on “Women, Peace and Security” and looking ahead to the 25th anniversary of its landmark resolution on the matter in two years, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari raised the Kashmir issue, twinning it with Palestine.

Claiming that Kashmir was under “foreign occupation”, he asserted that the “most egregious “atrocities and crimes against girls and women” were taking place in those two areas.

Rather than elevate it with a detailed response, Kamboj said, “My delegation considers it unworthy to even respond to such malicious and false propaganda. Rather, our focus is where it shall always be – positive and forward-looking”.

She added, “Let me dismiss the frivolous, baseless, and politically motivated remarks made by the delegate of Pakistan regarding the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir”.

Pakistan’s persistent attempts to bring Kashmir into every speech at the UN regardless of the speech have failed to draw attention to its version of the issue and India is peremptorily discussing them.

Ministers from several countries participated in the session chaired by Veronica Nataniel Macamo Dlhovo, the foreign minister of Mozambique, which holds the Council’s presidency.

Many of the about 90 speakers expressed concern over the setbacks suffered by women in Afghanistan, where their rights are severely curtailed by the Taliban; in Ukraine devastated by Russia’s invasion, and by civil war and conflicts in places like Yemen, Mali, South Sudan, and Syria.

Sima Bahous, who as the executive director of UN-Women is the top UN official for women’s issues, said that gender equality made strides with many historic firsts during the first two decades after the Council adopted the resolution on women, peace, and security in 2000.

But since then there has been backsliding with “gender apartheid” resurfacing in Afghanistan and conflict, violence, and refugee crises hitting women the hardest, she said.

“We neither significantly changed the composition of peace tables, nor the impunity enjoyed by those who commit atrocities against women and girls,” she said.

Kamboj said that in post-conflict situations, steps should be taken internationally to “address meaningfully and institutionally the inequalities and violence faced by women, and to ensure their full participation in decision-making”.

Kamboj said, “We have been emphasizing the importance of an inclusive and representative governance in Afghanistan, with the meaningful participation of women in accordance ” with the Council resolution from 2021.

She emphasized the role of women in UN peacekeeping where “women police officers and peacekeepers play an indispensable role” and said that India welcomed the efforts for gender parity in the operations.

India made the “single largest deployment of women peacekeepers” to the UN Interim Security Force in Abyei (UNISFA) in Sudan in January and was the first country to send police units made up entirely of women in 2007 when they joined operations in Liberia.

Kamboj said that “the principles of democracy, pluralism and the rule of law are essential prerequisites” to create a “conducive environment for the participation and inclusion of women in political processes and decision-making”.

0

Salesforce Ventures, the company’s global investment arm, has launched a new $250 million generative artificial intelligence (AI) fund to bolster the startup ecosystem and spark the development of responsible AI.

The fund will initially invest in four companies, including Anthropic, Cohere, Hearth.AI, and You.com.

WPL 2023: Overseas stars not performing for RCB is their biggest concern, says Parthiv Patel

0

Wednesday’s match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League at Brabourne Stadium is a crucial clash for both teams to get off the mark in the points table.

Bangalore’s overseas stars in Ellyse Perry, Heather Knight, Sophie Devine, and Megan Schutt are yet to produce match-winning performances in the competition, something which former India men’s wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel believes is a tremendous concern for the Smriti Mandhana-led side.

“The biggest concern for RCB is their overseas stars are not performing. They have invested heavily in their overseas players and they have not performed. Another thing is, whoever gets a start, should try to get a big one, which is something ailing in RCB’s camp,” said Patel while replying to a question from news in a virtual interaction facilitated by Sports18 and JioCinema.

With talk on social media comparing the RCB women’s team to their male IPL counterparts in terms of being strong on paper but not firing collectively as a unit, Patel thinks the side still has it in them to bounce back from twin defeats.

“Having said that, if you look at their names on the side, they can bounce back and there is no doubt about it. I have no doubt that they will bounce back at some stage in the tournament. We have seen this in the men’s IPL before; where teams do not start that well, but they do go on to win the tournament and RCB has that potential.”

On the other hand, Gujarat, despite fast-bowling all-rounder Kim Garth’s five-fer, ended up on the losing side against UP Warriorz, thanks to late fireworks from Grace Harris. Patel thinks Gujarat was unfortunate to lose and would require everyone in the eleven to contribute as a unit, especially with no word on injured skipper Beth Mooney’s availability for the rest of the tournament.

“Regarding Gujarat Giants, I thought they did really well and were probably unlucky to lose their last game to UP Warriorz. But I wouldn’t say unlucky as the way Grace Harris played that knock (in Sunday’s game), you hardly see 53 (58) runs being scored in the last three overs. Another thing is, losing out on their captain is a big blow.”

“They were actually banking a lot on Beth Mooney, but it’s something which they will have to deal with and try to play as a team. They are not the team with superstars, so I think it is important for them, including the young Indian contingent, to contribute more which will make those little differences for Gujarat Giants.”

With Bangalore and Gujarat aiming to improve their poor net run rate, Patel opined all five teams will need to make sure their net run rate is healthy, citing it becoming a decisive factor in deciding the sides progressing to playoffs.

“It’s going to be huge as it’s not a ten-team tournament. This is just a five-team tournament where only three teams will go through, so the net run rate makes a huge difference. Most of the time teams do not actually worry about losing in the first couple of games. But that makes a huge difference when you are counting the net run rate at the end of the tournament.”

“I thought RCB did well in the first game, though they were well and truly out of the game after the fifth or sixth over of their chase. But they still got close to Delhi’s score. Teams will have to think about it – if you are not in the game, just do not throw it away.”

“They need to make sure that the net run rate stays in control because this is what will happen – there will be teams who will be having the same number of points and that’s when the net run rate will come into play.”

2 killed, 16 injured after train derails in Egypt

0

At least two people were killed and 16 others injured after a train derailed in Qalyub, a city in the Qalyubia Governorate about 23 km north of Egypt’s capital Cairo.

Egypt’s Health Ministry said that 10 of the 16 injured people were receiving medical treatment at the Qalyub Specialist Hospital, adding that their injuries were not life-threatening, Xinhua news agency reported.

The other six injured people were released after suffering minor injuries and bruises.

Meanwhile, Egyptian National Railways said in a statement that the train went through the “closed semaphore” at the Qalyub Train Station and headed toward a blocked railway before colliding with the protection at the end of the railway.

As a result, the locomotive and the first carriage were derailed, the statement said, adding the Egyptian Transportation Ministry formed a committee to investigate the accident.

Meanwhile, Egypt’s Public Prosecutor also ordered an investigation into the Qalyub train collision.

Egypt’s railway system has long been troubled by poorly maintained equipment and poor administration, which frequently results in train derailments and crashes. At least 32 people were killed in a train collision in 2021 in Tahta, a city in southern Egypt. Later that year, a train derailed in Qalyubia, killing 11 people.

Archana Gautam’s father files case against Priyanka Gandhi’s secretary

Archana Gautam, Congress candidate in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and Bigg Boss-16 contestant, has taken her battle with Sandeep Singh, personal secretary of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, to the next level.

Archana Gautam’s father, Gautam Buddha, has lodged a case against Sandeep Singh at Partapur police station in Meerut.

He has alleged that Sandeep Singh not only uttered casteist words to his daughter but also threatened to kill her.

Gautam Buddha said that his daughter Archana Gautam has been trying to meet Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for a long time, but Sandeep Singh was not allowing her to meet.

He said that Archana Gautam was called to Raipur, Chhattisgarh, on February 26 by Sandeep Singh to participate in the Congress General Convention on the invitation of Priyanka Gandhi.

Archana Gautam asked for an appointment with Priyanka Gandhi, but Sandeep Singh refused and then misbehaved with her.

Recently, Archana Gautam had come live on Facebook where she made several allegations against Sandeep Singh.

In Facebook Live, Archana Gautam had also said that the entire Congress party is angry with Sandeep Singh.

Sandeep Singh does not even allow anyone to meet Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. She said that Singh had even threatened to put her in jail.

Archana’s father has also demanded security for the daughter, claiming a threat to her life.

The Meerut Police has now started an investigation in this matter after registering a case under Section 504, 506 of the IPC and SC ST Act.

‘Atiq Ahmad to be brought to UP next week’

Mafia don-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad will be brought to Prayagraj from the Sabarmati jail in Ahmedabad next week, a senior police official said.

“Immediately after Holi, we will initiate paperwork and get the necessary permission from the court after which Atiq will be brought to Prayagraj for interrogation in the Umesh Pal murder case,” he added.

Atiq has been identified as the master conspirator of the murder of Umesh Pal and two police guards.

“We will soon apply for a warrant B (production warrant) to the jail in Gujarat where Atiq is lodged. We are working on expediting the cases against him in the state,” said the official.

Atiq was shifted to Sabarmati jail in June 2019. The Supreme Court had, on April 22, 2019, ordered to shift him to a high-security jail in Gujarat after he was accused of orchestrating the kidnapping and assault on a real estate businessman, Mohit Jaiswal, from the Deoria jail.

On December 28, 2018, Jaiswal filed an FIR stating that he was kidnapped from Lucknow and taken to a jail where he was assaulted by Atiq and his aides and forced to transfer his business to them.

The incident had taken place at Deoria jail in Uttar Pradesh.

Later, the case was handed over to CBI which filed a chargesheet on December 31, 2020, in the case and indicted Atiq and his son Umar along with others.

Meanwhile, the mystery over the two minor sons of Atiq has deepened after his wife Shaista Parveen filed an application at a Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court saying her two minor sons, Ahzaan and Abaan, are missing.

She said the two boys went missing after the Uttar Pradesh Police picked them up in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case and they have not been seen since.

The police had stated that the two minor sons were in a juvenile shelter home but Shaista said that the sons were not in the shelter home.

CJM judge Dinesh Kumar Gautam asked the child protection officer in Prayagraj and the station-in-charge of the Dhoomanganj Police Station, Rajesh Kumar Maurya, to submit a report on the ‘missing’ boys.

The hearing for this report will be held on March 10.

Umesh Pal, the prime witness in the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case, was shot by unidentified assailants outside his house in Prayagraj.

As many as 160 criminal cases have been lodged against Atiq Ahmad’s family members, according to Uttar Pradesh Police.

Atiq has been named in 100 cases, while his brother Ashraf has 52 cases, his wife Shaista Praveen has three, and sons Ali and Umar Ahmad have four and one cases, respectively, against them.

Ali is currently lodged in Naini Central Prison in Prayagraj, while Umar is in Lucknow jail. UP Police has announced a reward of Rs 2.5 lakhs for Atiq’s son Asad in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case.

Atiq’s minor sons, Ahzaan and Abaan, are in Class 12 and Class 9 respectively.

Iran vows to continue efforts for nuke talks’ conclusion

0

Iran has vowed to stick to the path of diplomacy and negotiation as it continues to seek a conclusion to the stalled nuclear talks.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian made the remarks on Tuesday in an address to a commemoration ceremony, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s website.

He stressed that reaching an agreement in the talks on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal in line with the national interests is among the “inherent responsibilities” of the Iranian diplomatic apparatus.

He added Iran has explicitly told the US and other Western parties that high on its agenda are observing red lines, safeguarding national interests, and achieving an agreement to which all parties would be committed.

Amir Abdollahian said Iran will never leave the negotiating table, nor will it back down from its red lines even under the toughest circumstances.

Iran signed the nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), with world powers in July 2015, agreeing to put some curbs on its nuclear program in return for the removal of the sanctions on the country. The US, however, pulled out of the deal in May 2018 and reimposed its sanctions on Tehran.

The talks on the JCPOA’s revival began in April 2021 in Vienna, Austria. No breakthrough has been achieved after the latest round of talks in August 2022.

4th Test: India need to work on both batting and bowling, says Dravid

0

India has to improve both in its batting and bowling during the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as the team wants to win the match and qualify for the World Test Championship final without the help of others, said head coach Radhul Draivd on Tuesday.

India had won the first two Tests at Nagpur and New Delhi but lost the third in Indore and are leading the series 2-1 going into the fourth and final match of the series.

“We will have to work both on batting and bowling (departments). If you see the Indore Test, 109 runs in the first innings were not good enough. If we had scored 60-70 runs more, it would have been good. We also allowed them a few extra runs in the first innings in that situation and those conditions. So we will have to do better in both the areas of the game,” Dravid said in a pre-match press conference here.

Asked how he as a coach judges the players’ performances on challenging wickets, Dravid said he will have to be realistic about what is a good performance on such wickets.

“It’s just really about being realistic about what is a good performance on some of the challenging wickets that we are playing on. Not only here, but I think over the last many matches. I mean I think if you look at the last three or four years all over the world, I think wickets have generally, you know I think, got a lot more challenging.

So you just have to be realistic about what the benchmarks are now, what the standards are, just understand that even in these kinds of games,” he said.

A really good performance can change the game and we saw that with Rohit (Sharma in Nagpur). We’ve seen that many times over here. So yeah, I think it’s just being realistic in our assessment of our batsmen and their averages and their numbers and we don’t really look so much into it,” he added.

IND v AUS, 4th Test: Every pitch is challenging, Dravid dismisses talk about final Test strip

0

The talk about pitches had started well before Australia left for India and it is continuing as the two teams are preparing for the fourth and final Test, which will be starting here on Thursday.

India is leading the series 2-1 and needs to win the fourth Test to secure a place in the WTC final while Australia would like to win the match to finish the series 2-2 and return home with a lot of pride.

With so much at stake for both teams, the pitch for the fourth Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium here was under focus when India head coach Rahul Dravid came in for a pre-match press conference.

The Indian coach was surprised when told that the curator has kept two strips under cover and said he had no idea why that was so.

“I don’t know why two strips are covered. I never asked him why he covered the other one, but I don’t know what that was. But yeah, I mean, I think we’re playing on this one, so I don’t know what, I have no idea what the other one (is covered),” said Dravid.

Dravid said that he only had a look at the pitch that would be used for the Test.

“It looks OK to me. And I mean, I think whatever the wicket is, it honestly doesn’t matter. There’s just a lot of talk about pictures all the time. They’re the same for both teams,” said the former India captain.

The coach said every pitch has some challenges for the players — sometimes for the bowlers, and other occasions for the batters. But added that players have to learn to play on them.

“Sometimes it does get more challenging. It is more challenging for the bowlers at times, it’s more challenging for the batsman at times. You know, wickets are like that. Whatever it is. We have to learn to play on them, we have to learn to adjust, and we’ve played on some challenging wickets overseas as well,” said Dravid.

He said that there is no pitch that will satisfy everyone.

“We played on some wickets in South Africa recently where the spinner was completely taken out of the game. So you know, as I said, I mean you know everyone’s trying to produce wickets that eventually you want results in these games because you know and that’s natural.

So you will be looking to produce wickets where the ball probably has a bit more sway over the bat and when that happens at times you know it can slightly move. The thing I wouldn’t necessarily that happens. It’s part of the game,” Dravid said.

UN chief to meet Ukrainian President in Kiev

0

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Wednesday, a UN spokesman said.

“The secretary-general has just arrived in Poland on his way to Ukraine,” said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for Guterres, in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Guterres and Zelensky will discuss the continuation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative in all its aspects, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the statement.

On July 22, 2022, Russia and Ukraine separately signed a document in Istanbul with Turkey and the United Nations on grain and fertilizer exports from Ukraine and Russia to ensure supplies to global markets amid the Russia-Ukraine war.

The deal, due to expire on November 19, 2022, was extended for another 120 days. Guterres has repeatedly called for the deal’s further extension.

While in Kyiv, Guterres will also talk with Zelensky about “other pertinent issues”, Dujarric said in the statement, noting that it is the UN chief’s third visit to Ukraine in the past year.

Guterres will be back at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday, according to the statement.

Later at a noon press briefing Tuesday, Guterres’ deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said the UN chief “is currently in Ukraine”, making his way to Kyiv.

There’s no visit to Moscow planned, Haq said, pointing out that prior to leaving New York, Guterres had a conversation with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin.

“And from the secretary-general’s standpoint, he’s willing to go wherever he’s needed and whenever it’s useful. But, of course, we’ll see how that develops,” he said.

A delegation from Russia is expected to be in Geneva next week for further discussions, said Haq, adding that “so those will be conducted at a high level there concerning the Black Sea Grain Initiative.”

“I think we are engaged in serious discussions and we’ll continue to do so,” he said. “And I think it should be clear to all participants the advantages, the very real advantages in continuing this initiative.”

Under the initiative, more than 20 million metric tons of foodstuffs have been safely reconnected to global supply chains on more than 700 ships, helping to bring down prices around the world, Guterres told a UN Security Council high-level meeting in Ukraine on February 24.

“I want to underscore the importance of all parties remaining engaged in this initiative, and reiterate our call for it to be extended beyond March 2023,” he then said.

Lakhs of women devotees take part in Attukal Pongala in Thiruvananthapuram

0

the famed Attukal Pongala festival in the capital city. Incidentally, the present festival on Tuesday is taking place after a gap of two years following the Covid pandemic. Last year’s event was held amid tight protocols, with very few participants, compared to the past.

Listed in the Guinness world records for the largest number of women participating in a single day to offer prayers, this festival is gaining more popularity with more devotees, even from other religions taking part.

The temple located in the heart of the city is dedicated to Attukal Bhagavathi, believed to be an incarnation of Kannaki, the central character of the Tamil epic “Silappadikaram”.

The Pongal event takes place on the penultimate day of the 10-day-long Attukal Pongala festival. The most prestigious seat for cooking is in the temple compound, but those
get reserved at least three to four days prior to the event.

According to old timers, the second best place is a few kilometers away from the Attukal temple and it’s on the roads that lead to the now very popular Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple after it was found to have a treasure worth more than Rs one lakh crore.

Temple authorities have said that like the pre-Covid time, this time it has been a record gathering and is estimated to run into several lakhs as women were found cooking in more than a 10 square kilometer radius of the temple.

The rituals begin around 10.30 a.m when the chief priest of the famous Attukal Bhagavathi Temple lights a makeshift stove with a fire brought from the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

The fire the priest lights is then passed on to the stoves of women who line up on either side of the roads and cook their offering using rice, jaggery, and coconut. The women who take part in this festival dress up in brand-new clothes.

“I am a strong devotee of the Devi and this is one day that I always wait eagerly for. Was deeply sad that I could not make it in the past two years and now I feel excited and really happy as my kiln has been lit and the cooking for the Devi has begun,” said Lakshmi, a homemaker.

The highlight of this event is women from all religions take an active part as the former actress Annie, wife of popular director Shaji Kailas, is engaged in the festival at the courtyard of her home, here.

“This time I decided to do it here, as I want the presence of my mother who was always present, but is now not around,” said Annie, as Kailas watched his wife engaged in cooking.

According to legend, Kannaki destroyed Madurai in Tamil Nadu after the king of Madurai wrongfully imposed the death penalty on her husband.

After that, Kannaki traveled to Kerala, where she rested for a while at Attukal, and women are said to have cooked ponga la to please her.

The festival comes to a close around 2.30 pm when the women wait for the chief priest to spray holy water on the offering and for this the temple have authorized numerous priests to go around the places where the women have cooked theirs.

Once this is done, after a small prayer, the women pack their bags and return to their homes.

The state government has given a holiday for all establishments in the capital district to enable the festivities to go smoothly and the state-owned transport department and the Indian Railways have made special arrangements for the travelers.

All across the streets, clubs, organizations, and auto and taxi drivers are engaged in the distribution of free food during the day including breakfast, vegetarian lunch, juice, tea, and snacks.

Indian Wells: Swiatek back to defend her crown; sit on top of the draw

0

World No.1 Iga Swiatek is back to defend her crown at the Indian Wells Masters, as the Pole sits at the top of the draw as the No.1 seed player.

Main-draw play at the WTA 1000 event starts on March 8, with World No.1 and defending champion Swiatek leading the field. Her run to the title last year was part of her 37-match winning streak, the longest of the 2000s.

Like all of the 32 seeded players, Swiatek has received a first-round bye. She will play the winner of the first-round match between Claire Liu and Alison van Uytvanck.

Two of the four former Indian Wells champions in the field could face off in the third round, with No.32 seed and 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu as a potential opponent for Swiatek.

No.5 seed Caroline Garcia is the other Top 10 seed in the first quarter. Also in this quarter are 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu, No.12 Liudmila Samsonova, No.13 Beatriz Haddad Maia, No.19 Madison Keys, No.20 Magda Linette, No.30 Leylah Fernandez, and Danielle Collins.

The no.4 seed Tunisian Ons Jabeur heading into the second quarter. Jabeur, who withdrew from the entire Middle East swing with an injury, will play her first match since the Australian Open, against either Maryna Zanevska or Lauren Davis in the second round.

The two other former Indian Wells champions in the field, Victoria Azarenka and Paula Badosa are in this quarter. No.14 Azarenka, the titlist in 2012 and 2016, could potentially meet Jabeur in the Round of 16.

Jessica Pegula, the top-ranked American seeded no. 2, leads the third quarter. Pegula could face Camila Giorgi, who won the Merida title two weeks ago, in the second round.

This year’s Australian Open champion, Aryna Sabalenka, rests at the bottom of the draw as the No.2 seed. She will face either Alize Cornet or Evgeniya Rodina in the second round.

Sabalenka started the year with a 13-match winning streak before suffering her first loss of the season to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova in Dubai.

Sabalenka and No.16 Krejcikova could have a rematch in the Round of 16 if they both hold their seeds. Before that, Sabalenka could face No.29 Donna Vekic, who holds a 5-2 head-to-head lead over Sabalenka, in the third round. Vekic just won her fourth career title in Monterrey on Sunday.

Also in the bottom quarter, No.6 Coco Gauff of the USA and No.9 Belinda Bencic might be headed for a showdown in the Round of 16. Gauff picked up her third career title in Auckland in January, while Bencic has already won two titles this year, in Adelaide and Abu Dhabi.

The BNP Paribas Open kicks off two straight WTA 1000 events in the United States. The Miami Open will follow with a main draw starting on March 21.

Kangana on Nawazuddin’s statement: ‘Silence does not always give us peace’

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has come in support of Nawazuddin Siddiqui after he broke his silence and released a statement regarding the allegations being made against him by his estranged wife Aaliya.

Kangana said that it was much-needed for Nawazuddin to speak for himself because silence is not a solution to all problems.

Kangana took to her Instagram Stories and shared: “Was much-needed @nawazuddin._siddiqui saab…silence does not always give us peace…I am glad you issued this statement (folding hands emoji).”

She also shared the screenshot of the statement issued by Nawazuddin, who recently reacted to the allegations made against him by Aaliya Siddiqui.

Aaliya accused Nawazuddin of using his power to take custody of her kids and allegedly raping her. She also shared a video from outside her bungalow stating that she is not allowed to enter his house and left with her kids on the road at midnight.

He wrote in his statement: “I am termed as a bad guy everywhere because of my silence. The reason I have kept quiet is that all this tamasha will somewhere be read by my small children. Social Media Platforms, the Press & A bunch of people are really enjoying my character assassination on the basis of one-sided & manipulated videos. There are a few points, I would like to express – First of all me and Aaliya do not stay together for several years, we are already divorced but we definitely had an understanding only for our kids. Does anyone know, why my kids are in India and not attending school for 45 days, wherein the school is sending me letters every day that it’s been too long an absence?

“My kids have been made hostage for the past 45 days & are missing their schooling in Dubai.”

He also further asserted that Aaliya has been paid approximately Rs 10 lakh per month for the past two years and 5-7 lakhs per month before moving to Dubai with his children, excluding the school fees, medical, travel, and other leisure activities.
