Meta introduces new comment moderation tools for creators on FB

0

Meta has introduced new comment moderation tools for creators on Facebook, making it easier for them to view moderation statistics and manage conversations.

The company made the announcement on Tuesday from its ‘Meta for Creators’ account on Facebook.

“View what criteria are met for hiding comments with the inline comment preview and criteria tag in the activity log of Moderation Assist,” the company said.

Creators can also now view “moderation statistics”, like the number of comments hidden in the last 30 days, by seeing the insights in the “Moderation Assist’s Activity Log.”

Moreover, creators can now search comments by keywords including emojis, commenter names, and dates on their posts and “take bulk actions, such as liking or hiding, through Comments Manager in Professional Dashboard,” the company said.

Meanwhile, last month, Meta announced that it is bringing updates to its ad system, including removing gender as an option for advertisers to reach users under 18 on Facebook and Instagram.

Age and location will be the only information about a teen that the company will use to show them advertisements, which will make sure that teens see ads that are meant for their age and products and services available where they live.

Zoom lays off 1,300 employees, CEO takes 98% pay cut

Video communication app Zoom is laying off about 1,300 people, or 15 percent of its workforce, its CEO Eric Yuan has announced.

Yuan also said that he is reducing his salary for the coming fiscal year by 98 percent and foregoing his FY23 corporate bonus.

“Members of my executive leadership team will reduce their base salaries by 20 percent for the coming fiscal year while also forfeiting their FY23 corporate bonuses,” he announced.

During the pandemic, Zoom usage surged significantly as millions stayed home. Yuan said the company is still seeing that people and businesses continue to rely on Zoom.

“But the uncertainty of the global economy, and its effect on our customers, means we need to take a hard – yet important – look inward to reset ourselves so we can weather the economic environment, deliver for our customers and achieve Zoom’s long-term vision,” he said in a blog post.

“We have made the tough but necessary decision to reduce our team by approximately 15 percent and say goodbye to around 1,300 hardworking, talented colleagues,” Yuan informed.

Departing full-time employees in the US will be offered up to 16 weeks’ salary and healthcare coverage, payment of their earned FY23 annual bonus based on company performance, and stock option vesting for six months for US employees and through August 9, 2023, for non-US employees.

“I know this is a difficult message to hear, and certainly not one I ever wanted to deliver,” said Yuan.

Zoom will announce its earnings for 2022 on February 27.

PM Modi to reply to motion of thanks on President’s Address in LS today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday will reply to the motion of thanks in the President’s Address to Parliament.

The opposition on Tuesday led by Rahul Gandhi attacked the government and the Prime Minister.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in his Lok Sabha speech brought up the Adani controversy. He alleged that the Central government was favoring only one corporate, Adani Group, ‘who gets all the contracts, including the overseas ones’.

“Earlier he used to travel in Adani’s aircraft and now Adani travels with Modiji in his aircraft. First, the matter was limited to Gujarat then the country and now he has become international,” Gandhi said in Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address.

He alleged, “The Prime Minister went to Australia and by magic, SBI gave a $1 billion loan to Adani. The PM goes to Bangladesh and then the power development board of the country signs a 25-year contract with Adani.”

“How much money Adani gave to the BJP in the last 20 years,” Rahul Gandhi asked.

At 17, Pawan Kalyan wanted to kill himself with Chiranjeevi’s revolver

“My problems were with tension and unhappiness, But I faced them,” says Telugu star Power Star Pawan Kalyan in the next “Unstoppable 2” show with senior actor NBK.

The highly anticipated finale is set to premiere on February 10 on the Telugu OTT platform aha. The first part of the episode set a record of sorts with the highest number of app downloads in the first five minutes of its launch.

Continuing his candid conversation with Nandamuri Balakrishna, the star better known as NBK, Pawan Kalyan looked back at his battles with depression, including a moment in his youth when he considered taking his own life.

“I have asthma and felt isolated due to frequent hospitalization. Therefore, I’m not much of a social person. At 17, the pressure of exams only added to my depression, and I remember planning to take my own life using the licensed revolver of my eldest brother (Chiranjeevi) when he was not in the house,” Pawan Kalyan recalled.

Timely intervention from his elder brother (Nagababu) and sister-in-law (Surekha) saved him in the nick of time.

“My brother (Chiranjeevi) told me, ‘Just live for me. If you don’t do anything, that’s fine. But please live.’ From then on, I taught myself and found solace in reading books, practicing Carnatic music, martial arts, and other pursuits,” Pawan Kalyan said.

Today, Pawan Kalyan is a source of inspiration for many, having channeled his struggles into a successful acting and political career. “Don’t compare yourself to others. Compete only with yourself,” Pawan Kalyan said, adding: “Knowledge and success come with hard work, and what we endure today will shape our tomorrow. Be the best version of yourself.”

$20 bn worth 5G smartphones shipped in India in 2022 at 74% growth

0

The 5G smartphone shipment share in India increased to 31 per cent in 2022, with 5G shipments growing 74 per cent (year-on-year), a report showed on Tuesday.

5G smartphones worth $20 billion (in value) were shipped in the country in 2022. Samsung led the 5G segment with a 23 per cent market share, followed by OnePlus with a 15 per cent market share.

“Driven by a resilient consumer appetite to switch and upgrade, the premium smartphone market continued to gain traction. In fact, the uber-premium smartphone segment (Rs 1,00,000 and above) grew a whopping 95 percent YoY,” said Menka Kumari, Analyst- Industry Intelligence Group, CyberMedia Research (CMR).

However, the overall mobile market in India declined 17 percent YoY in 2022 and smartphone shipments declined 8 per cent YoY.

“All said, the overall smartphone market continued to post a decline, driven by the tough market conditions in H2 2022,” Kumari added.

On a quarterly basis, smartphone shipments declined by 28 per cent in Q4 2022.

However, the Premium smartphone segment and the super-premium smartphone segment saw shipments increasing by 12 per cent and 41 per cent YoY, respectively.

Xiaomi (21 per cent), Samsung (19 per cent), and Vivo (14 per cent) captured the top three spots in the smartphone market, followed by realme (14 per cent) and OPPO (10 per cent).

The overall feature phone segment declined by 34 percent YoY, driven by weak consumer sentiment, owing to high device prices.

“We anticipate the tough macroeconomic conditions to persist in the first half of the year. The silver lining continues to be the growth in 5G smartphone shipments. It will be a big year for 5G in India,” said Shipra Sinha, Analyst-Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR.

Price and supply volatility: Addressing global energy security needs

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the India Energy Week (IEW) 2023 on Monday. Participants from different countries gathered to discuss the most pressing issues in the energy market.

Rosneft Chief Executive Officer Igor Sechin also visited IEW 2023 and participated in a ministerial session. The topics discussed at the session were price and supply volatility, and energy cooperation between Russia and India.

According to the IMF’s recent estimates, India and its neighbors will account for half of the global economic growth this year. In contrast, the contribution of the US and the Eurozone will amount to only 10 percent. India’s “enlightened national interest” principles are highly respected.

Based on these principles, the government implements an independent, pressure-free economic policy in harmony with its partners. Cooperation opens up new horizons.

India, as the world’s most populous nation, has become a leader in global economic dynamics, demonstrating rapid improvements in the lives of its people. It is a big country with a young, ambitious population, where dynamics are of the utmost importance.

It is no coincidence that analysts and experts predict growth rates of up to 7 percent per annum for India. In turn, Russia achieved a result more significant than many of the world’s leading economies in the face of unprecedented sanctions, pressure, and confrontation with almost the entire Western world. Despite the evolving situation around us, implementing major economic programs has already proven to be a tremendous psychological victory. This will determine success in other spheres.

Thus, the actions of the world hegemon, in an attempt to preserve its hegemony by all means, destroyed the single energy market. To date, there is no single global energy market. Energy security is no longer a global concern. As a result of these actions, all the principles of market trading have been destroyed to date.

Market pricing, contract law, and, in general, the possibilities of the legal protection of market participants have been abolished. In addition, logistics chains built up for decades have been forcibly severed. The blown-up Nord Stream project serves as an illustrative example.

The reformatting of the European gas market is the most compelling example.

At first, contrary to common sense, Europe was first made to abandon long-term contracts and switch to spot pricing, which led to an unprecedented price increase before the well-known events in Ukraine in the midst of the forced green transition and underinvestment in conventional energy. After eliminating Russian competition from the European market through sanctions and pressure, the Americans offered to return to long-term contracts that guarantee a return on investment. This is a banal case of unfair competition.

Consequently, Europe has lost its key competitive advantage — access to cheap and reliable Russian energy carriers — and is forced to pay three to five times higher prices for gas.

According to Bloomberg, the rejection of Russian gas has already cost Europe about 1 trillion euros.

As a result of a reasonable rejection of the accelerated energy transition, focusing on extracting conventional hydrocarbons, US oil majors have become leaders in capitalization.

By the way, BP, the leader of the green agenda, demonstrated a different approach. They could not, like their competitors, take advantage of the current situation. Based on the results published in its annual reports, we could reasonably assume that BP may announce a return to the strategy of conventional production and a reduction in green investments that generate losses. The total amount of announced write-offs is $38 billion.

It is also observed in the audited annual reports that BP, Rosneft’s 20 percent shareholder, has revised the value of Rosneft’s stake to $24 billion based on Rosneft’s performance results.

Rosneft assures the corporate world that it will work hard to keep the trust of its shareholders. At the same time, it should be noted that such an increase in the incomes of oil majors is not only due to favorable market conditions. A number of companies maximize profits and increase capitalization by directing funds to pay dividends and buy back shares.

Another beneficiary, taking advantage of the global energy crisis, is the Western military-industrial complex.

The answer to the destruction of the global market and the severance of logistics chains is the regionalization of markets and the development of new safe logistics. The regionalization of markets means forming regional payment systems with their own regional settlement and reserve currencies.

Obviously, the main risks of volatility are unprecedented sanctions pressure, including the so-called ‘price cap’. Non-market interventions must be treated calmly. Experts know how to find a solution. The reference price for Russian oil cannot be decided where this oil does not exist. If there are no supplies to Europe, then the reference prices will be decided from where it arrives — FOB Nakhodka, Dubai, and so on.

As it is written in the Ecclesiastes: “If something is crooked, it can’t be made straight; if something isn’t there, it can’t be counted.”

The fundamental reason for the energy crisis is primarily underinvestment in the industry as consumption grows and the pace of resource replenishment is insufficient.

The annual OPEC report indicates the opinion of Secretary-General Haitham Al Ghais: that to meet the growing oil demand alone by 2045, investments to the tune of $12 trillion are needed. Consumption today is 100 million barrels per day and continues to grow. The four countries with the highest resource base, however, remain the same: Venezuela, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Iran.

Russian companies, Rosneft in particular, are among the few that have not reduced their level of investment in development over the past decade. Today, Rosneft is implementing the world’s largest investment project to create a new oil and gas province in Eastern Siberia, Vostok Oil, with a resource base of 6.5 billion tons.

One of the drivers of Rosneft’s low-carbon operations is Vostok Oil. The flagship project’s carbon footprint is only a quarter of the average global indicators of projects in the modern oil industry.

The Vostok Oil project is distinguished by its uniquely low sulphur content — 0.01-0.04 percent. The indicator is comparable to the Euro-3 standard for diesel fuel. Vostok Oil actually produces green barrels with the help of advanced technologies. Rosneft is one of the leaders of the low-carbon agenda. The company was the first in
the domestic energy sector to set a net zero target by 2050 for Scopes 1 and 2.

In India, such projects are implemented by Nayara. As part of the reinforcement of energy security, we are ready to increase supplies on a long-term basis and diversify supplies. Rosneft will support the activities of Nayara Energy shareholders to develop refining capacities, develop petrochemistry and expand the retail business.

Rosneft can and will work wherever there is growth potential and intent to protect our interests, despite external pressure.

Such countries constitute the largest and growing part of the world’s energy consumption. Rosneft noted the responsible, balanced position of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and our other OPEC+ partners, acting in the long-term interests of stabilizing the energy market, despite enormous external pressure.

In fact, one just doesn’t have to step on any rake. All in good time. First, real new green technologies should be developed that can actually reduce carbon emissions. Such technologies simply do not exist right now.

It is necessary right now to reduce emissions in the traditional energy industry, using the technological potential that gives a real effect. Dynamic economic growth in India means large-scale energy consumption and demand
growth.

This development of the global energy sector is in Russia’s interests. Therefore, it will do everything it can to support India’s plans. The speed of adapting our economies to new conditions will be of key importance.

Boeing to slash 2,000 jobs, outsourcing employees at TCS hit hard: Report

Aviation giant Boeing is slashing 2,000 jobs in finance and HR verticals this year and the company outsources about a third of those jobs to Tata Consulting Services (TCS) in Bengaluru, the media reported.

The rest of the jobs will “disappear” as Boeing reduces its finance and HR support services, reports Seattle Times, citing Mike Friedman, a senior director of communications at Boeing.

“Boeing employees trained Tata Consulting Services employees on that initial set of outsourced work, which TCS is scheduled to take over in the coming week,” the report mentioned.

Boeing now has nearly 3,500 direct employees in India and another 7,000 people in India employed at its suppliers, including Tata Group.

“The TCS non-engineering work for Boeing will be done at a new facility in Bengaluru,” the report said.

According to the report, these corporate positions will be slashed through substantial job cuts and layoffs.

“We expect about 2,000 reductions this year primarily in Finance and HR through a combination of attrition and layoffs,” Boeing confirmed.

“Over time, some of our corporate functions have grown quite large. And with that growth tends to come bureaucracy or disparate systems that are inefficient. So we’re streamlining,” Friedman was quoted as saying.

About 1,500 jobs will be cut in finance from a total of 5,800 company-wide, and up to 400 more in HR, about 15 per cent of the workforce there.

In another move to cut costs, Boeing has started requiring managers to prepare employee annual performance reviews for 2022 to classify 10 percent of their staff as failing to meet all expectations.

In addition to outsourcing work, Boeing hopes to reduce work both by simplifying processes and by cutting out some tasks.

Twitter under Musk not doing enough to curb child abuse content: Report

0

Despite Elon Musk saying that child abuse content on Twitter is being removed vigorously, a report has slammed the micro-blogging platform, saying that child sexual abuse imagery (CSAM) still persists on Twitter.

The New York Times found images containing 10 child abuse victims in 150 instances “across multiple accounts” on Twitter.

“Child sexual abuse imagery spreads on Twitter even after the company is notified: One video drew 120,000 views,” the report mentioned.

Meanwhile, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection also uncovered 260 of the “most explicit videos” in its database on Twitter, which garnered over 174,000 likes and 63,000 retweets in total.

According to the report, Twitter actually promotes some of the images through its recommendation algorithm.

The platform reportedly took down some of the disturbing content after the Canadian Centre for Child Protection notified the micro-blogging platform.

“The volume of CSAM we’re able to find with a minimal amount of effort is quite significant,” said Lloyd Richardson, the Canadian center’s technology director.

“It shouldn’t be the job of external people to find this sort of content sitting on their system,” Richardson was quoted as saying.

In November last year, Musk slashed 15 percent of its trust and safety staff (content moderation) saying it wouldn’t impact moderation.

Earlier this month, Twitter said it’s “proactively and severely limiting the reach” of CSAM content and that the platform will work to “remove the content and suspend the bad actor(s) involved.”

Musk had earlier said that removing child abuse content is his top priority.

Women’s T20 World Cup: Lower-order batting helps Australia beat India in warm-up tie

0

India Women allowed Australia to escape from a precarious 79/8 in the 16 over to post a modest 129/8 and then batted poorly to lose their first warm-up match ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

Fine rearguard innings by Georgia Wareham (32 not out) and Jess Jonassen (22 not out) helped Australia recover from a difficult situation they had landed at the Newlands. Wareham and Jonassen raised 50 runs for the unfinished ninth wicket partnership as Australia reached 129/8 in 20 overs.

In reply, India Women were bowled out for 85 in 15 overs with only three batters reaching double figures. Darcie Brown claimed 4-17 for Australia as they proved their strength and lived up to the tag as favorites to lift the title.

As so often, Australia’s depth came to the fore as they got out of a hole to beat India by a comfortable margin.

Australia was reduced to 79 for eight, batting first, Shikha Pandey miserly on her way to figures of two for nine including Meg Lanning and Tahlia McGrath.

Chasing a target of 130, India quickly slumped to 22 for four, Darcie Brown the destroyer in chief with four for 17. India’s innings never really got going, with Deepti Sharma their best performer, making an unbeaten 19 as they were bowled out for 86.

Brief scores:

Australia 129/8 in 20 overs (Georgia Wareham 32 not out, Beth Mooney 28; Shikha Pandey 2-9, Pooja Vastrakar 2-16) beat India 86 all out in 15 overs (Deepti Sharma 19 not out, Harleen Deol 12; Darcie Brown 4-17, Ash Gardner 2-16) by 43 runs.

Andhra Pradesh CM may shift to Vizag next month

A week after Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy declared that Visakhapatnam will be the state capital, authorities have begun arrangements to shift the administrative capital to the port city from Amaravati.

Visakhapatnam district administration is busy identifying suitable buildings including a building for the Chief Minister’s official residence.

Though the district authorities are yet to receive formal orders about shifting of the state capital, the officials were doing the groundwork to keep everything ready in advance. The orders are likely to be issued anytime.

A building for the Chief Minister’s official residence is likely to be finalized on Beach Road, a key landmark area in the city. The official circles are abuzz with the talk that if everything goes well, the Chief Minister may perform the housewarming ceremony on March 22 or 23.

Officials were also busy identifying buildings for the government offices and residences of the minister and senior IAS and IPS officials.

Addressing a meeting in New Delhi on January 31, Jagan Mohan Reddy announced that Visakhapatnam will soon become the state capital.

He was addressing a curtain raiser event for the global investors’ summit in Visakhapatnam on March 3 and 4.

“Here I am to invite you to Visakhapatnam, which is going to be our capital, in the days to come. I myself would also be shifting over to Visakhapatnam in the months to come as well,” said Jagan Mohan Reddy, who is currently running the government from Amaravati.

Though several ministers had been speaking about this, it was the first time that the Chief Minister made a categorical statement about shifting the administrative capital to Visakhapatnam.

It was in 2019 that the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government mooted the idea of three state capitals with Visakhapatnam as the administrative capital. However, protests by farmers of Amaravati over the shifting of the capital and the High Court order directing the government to develop Amaravati as the state capital had delayed the process.

On December 17, 2019, Jagan Mohan Reddy announced in the state Assembly that three state capitals will be developed reversing the decision of the previous TDP government to develop Amaravati as the state capital.

The YSRCP government mooted Visakhapatnam as the administrative capital, Kurnool as the judicial capital and Amaravati as the legislative capital.

This triggered massive protests by farmers of Amaravati who had given 33,000 acres of land for the capital and the previous government had also undertaken the works on some components of the mega project.

On March 3, 2022, Andhra Pradesh High Court directed the state government to develop Amaravati as the state capital in six months. A bench of three judges had pronounced the judgment on 75 petitions filed by Amaravati farmers and others challenging the government’s move on three capitals.

However, the state government filed an appeal to the Supreme Court. In November last year, the Supreme Court stayed the High Court order saying that the court cannot act like a town planner or an engineer.

India sends NDRF team, humanitarian aid to quake-ht Turkey

0

India on Tuesday dispatched the first batch of humanitarian aid along with a rescue team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to Turkey where a massive 7.8-magnitude quake has killed over 4,300 people and injured thousands of others.

Taking to Twitter, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said: “India’s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) capabilities in action.

“The 1st batch of earthquake relief material leaves for Turkey, along with NDRF Search & Rescue Team, specially trained dog squads, medical supplies, drilling machines & other necessary equipment.”

The 51-member NDRF team headed by Deputy Commandant Deepak Talwar left from the Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad for Turkey on board an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft in the early hours of Tuesday.

Also in a tweet, the IAF said that “an IAF C-17 got airborne for Turkey. Bearing Search & Rescue teams of the @NDRFHQ”.

“This aircraft is part of a larger relief effort that will be undertaken by the IAF along with other Indian organizations.”

Tuesday’s development comes a day after the Centre had announced that two NDRF teams comprising 100 personnel with specially trained dog squads and necessary equipment were ready to be flown to Turkey for search and rescue operations.

According to the government, medical teams were also being readied with trained doctors and paramedics with essential medicines.

Relief material will be dispatched in coordination with the Turkish government and Indian Embassy in Ankara and Consulate General office in Istanbul.

As of Tuesday morning, the toll in Turkey stood at 2,921, while in Syria it increased to 1,451.

N.Korea calls for ‘perfecting’ war readiness posture

0

North Korea has convened a meeting of the ruling party’s central military commission to discuss ways to expand operational combat drills and “more strictly perfect” its readiness posture for war, Pyongyang’s state media reported on Tuesday.

Kim Jong-un presided over an enlarged meeting of the Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) on Monday, according to the North’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Participants “discussed in depth the major military and political tasks for 2023 and the long-term issues concerning the orientation for army building”, Yonhap News Agency quoted the KCNA as saying in a statement.

Major agenda items discussed included “the issue of constantly expanding and intensifying the operation and combat drills of the Korean People’s Army (KPA) to cope with the prevailing situation and more strictly perfecting the preparedness for war”, it added.

The meeting came amid reports that the North is preparing for a military parade to mark the 75th anniversary of the KPA’s founding on Wednesday, an event likely to be an occasion to flex its military muscle.

With his latest attendance at the meeting, the North’s leader has resumed his public activities after a hiatus of about 40 days.

The North launched around 70 ballistic missiles last year alone, the most in a single year, amid persistent speculation it may conduct a nuclear test in the near future.

Kim had called for an “exponential” increase in its nuclear arsenal and the need to mass-produce tactical nuclear weapons at a key party meeting held late last year.

SA20: Joburg Super Kings overwhelm MI Cape Town, remain in race for semis spot

0

The Joburg Super Kings romped to a convincing 76-run victory and a bonus point against MI Cape Town in SA20 at the Wanderers as they maintained their momentum in the build-up to the semifinals.

The big defeat ended MI Cape Town’s season, on a disappointing note. The Newlands-based team was already eliminated from the competition before the clash against the Super Kings but slipped to yet another defeat to finish at the bottom of the points table.

Simon Katich’s team will rue a couple of last-over finishes that could have changed the complexion of the season, but ultimately they will have to ponder about how they are going to improve next season.

The Joburg Super Kings, meanwhile, can look forward to their upcoming semi-final with confidence.

The victory was set up by Leus de Plooy’s 81 not out which powered the home team to 189/6 in their 20 overs. Du Plooy received solid support from Australian T20 World Cup winner Matthew Wade, who carved out 40 off just 18 balls.

MI Cape Town had started well with the ball by picking up three wickets in the Powerplay through George Linde (1-16) and Sam Curran (2-26).

In fact, Linde dismissed the tournament’s leading scorer and Super Kings captain Faf du Plessis with the first delivery of the innings, courtesy of a brilliant diving catch by MICT captain Rashid Khan.

MI Cape Town’s reply, however, stuttered from the start with none of their batters being able to capitalize on a good start. Rassie van der Dussen made 20, while Grant Roelofsen managed 21.

Young Dewald Brevis fought a lone hand at the backend of the innings, but ultimately the Super Kings’ bowling and fielding were too good for MI Cape Town on the night.

Left-arm spinner Kyle Simmons (3-23) impressed again with another three-wicket haul, while Gerald Coetzee’s wicket tally continues to bulge with figures of 3 for 27.

Maheesh Theekshana was equally impressive with 2-16 as MI Cape Town folded for 113 all out.

The Super Kings entrenched their second position on the Betway SA20 table with 27 points – equal to that of the table-topping Pretoria Capitals who have a superior net run rate.

Brief scores:

Joburg Super Kings 189/6 in 20 overs (Leus du Plooy 81 not out, Matthew Wade 40; Sam Curran 2-26, Jofra Archer 2-35) beat MI Cape Town 113 all out in 17.5 overs (Dewald Brevis 27; Kyle Simmonds 3-23, Gerald Coetzee 3-27, Maheesh Theekshana 2-16) by 76 runs.

Google introduces ChatGPT competitor ‘Bard’

0

Google has unveiled its new artificial intelligence (AI) service ‘Bard’ to compete against OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which is now opened up to “trusted testers” before the company makes it “more widely available to the public in the coming weeks”.

Bard is an “experimental conversational AI service” which is powered by Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA), Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a blog post on Monday.

The tool aims to combine the depth of the “world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our large language models”. It uses data from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses.

“Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills,” Pichai explained.

The tech giant is initially releasing it using LaMDA’s lightweight model version. This much smaller model requires significantly less computing power, allowing the company to scale to more users, resulting in more feedback.

Google will combine the external feedback with its own internal testing to make sure that Bard’s responses “meet a high bar for quality, safety, and groundedness in real-world information”, Pichai mentioned.

Australia’s white-ball expert Aron Finch retires from international cricket

0

Aaron Finch, who led Australia to their first ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title in 2021, called time on his international cricket career on Tuesday.

Finch, Australian Men’s T20 Captain, announced his retirement from all international cricket, 12 years after making his debut.

Having retired from One-Day Internationals in September 2022 after playing 146 matches, Finch has now decided to step away from T20 Internationals after playing 103 matches, where he averaged 34.28 at a strike rate of 142.5. He also played five Test matches in 2018.

“Realising that I won’t be playing on until the next T20 World Cup in 2024, now is the right moment to step down and give the team time to plan and build towards that event,” Finch told reporters at the MCG. “I also want to say a huge thank you to all the fans who have supported me throughout my international career.”

Finch, 36, first represented Australia in the U19 World Cup in 2006 — alongside current internationals Usman Khawaja, Matthew Wade, and David Warner.

Renowned for his power at the top of the order, Finch’s 172 off 76 balls against Zimbabwe in 2018 remains the highest individual score in T20 Internationals. At the time, this innings broke his own record of 156 of 63 balls against England in 2013.

Finch captained Australia in 76 T20 Internationals, more than any other men’s player, leading the team to a maiden ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title in 2021. He finishes his career as a two-time World Cup winner and has been a part of the squad that claimed the 50-over ICC Cricket World Cup title on home soil in 2015, cricket Australia informed in a release on Tuesday.

In what turned out to be Finch’s final match in the green and gold, he finished with a player-of-the-match performance against Ireland at the most recent T20 World Cup.

Finch will continue to play in T20 domestic competitions, including the KFC Big Bash League.

Speaking at the MCG to announce his retirement, Aaron Finch said: “Realising that I won’t be playing on until the next T20 World Cup in 2024, now is the right moment to step down and give the team time to plan and build towards that event.

Finch termed the World Cup triumphs as the most memorable moments of his career.

“Team success is what you play the game for and the maiden T20 World Cup win in 2021 and lifting the ODI World Cup on home soil in 2015 will be the two memories I cherish the most.

“To be able to represent Australia for 12 years and play with and against some of the greatest players of all time has been an incredible honor,” he added.

Cricket Australia Chair, Dr. Lachlan Henderson said: “On behalf of Cricket Australia, I’d like to congratulate Aaron on an exceptional international career, where he finishes as one of our finest white-ball players. In full flight, there were few batters more powerful than Aaron, illustrated by the fact he holds two of the three highest-ever scores in T20 International cricket.

“While he was a tough competitor on the field, Aaron always played the game with a smile on his face and in the right spirit. This earned him the respect of his teammates, opposition players, and fans from around the world,” he was quoted as saying in the release.

“As one of only four men’s players to captain Australia to a World Cup victory, Aaron will always have a special place in Australian Cricket’s history.

“Playing at the highest level for over a decade requires incredible determination and dedication, so we thank Aaron for his enormous contribution and wish him all the best in the next phase of his career,” Henderson said.

At the domestic level, Finch played for Victoria (2007/08 to present) and Melbourne Renegades (2011/12 to present) in the Big Bash League.

He was a big star in franchise T20 cricket and played for various teams in the Indian Premier League since he was first picked by Rajasthan Royals in the 2010 auction. In the IPL, he represented Delhi Daredevils (2011-12), Pune Warriors India (2013), Sunrisers Hyderabad (2014), Mumbai Indians (2015), Gujarat Lions (2016-17), Kings XI Punjab (2018), Royal Challengers Bangalore (2020) and Kolkata Knight Riders (2022).

He also played for Yorkshire (2014-15) and Surrey (2016-19) in England, Auckland Aces (2012-13) in New Zealand and Ruhuna Royals in the Sri Lanka Premier League (2012), scoring 11,382 runs in 381 T20 matches in all, hitting eight centuries and 77 fifties.
