Received no funds or land from Karnataka govt: Isha Foundation

0

Isha Foundation has refuted allegations made against it about land in Chikkaballapura and the forest area in the foothills of Nandi Hills, claiming that there is a “malicious campaign” to spread misinformation against it.

“We are deeply pained by certain false information being circulated about Isha Foundation in matters concerning the Karnataka State Ecological Budget and the Isha Foundation-owned land in Chikkaballapura,” it said in a statement released on Monday.

“Neither Isha Foundation nor Sadhguru has ever received any funds from the present government or the previous governments of Karnataka. Isha Foundation is not involved in any financial transactions directly or indirectly with the government of Karnataka,” added the foundation.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had allocated a Rs 100 crore budget towards state ecological activities with an emphasis on soil conservation to the forest department.

“Isha Foundation has not received any land from the present government nor the previous governments of Karnataka in Chikkaballapura or anywhere else… All lands in Sadhguru Sannidhi in Chikkaballapura are purchased through sale deeds from the original owners paying valuable consideration,” it clarified.

The land for construction has been directly bought by Isha from the owners of the land in Chikkaballapura through voluntary contributions by donors and volunteers, noted the foundation by spiritual leader Sadhguru.

“Adiyogi is located 31 km away from Nandi Hills and Nandi Hills is in the Nandi Hobli of Chikkaballapura Taluk whereas Adiyogi is located in Kasaba Hobli of Chikkaballapura Taluk. Our lands are not in the forest as they are Revenue lands bought from the land owners by paying consideration and have been duly converted,” it asserted.

17 dead as powerful 7.8-magnitude quake hits Turkey

0

At least 17 people were killed on Monday after a strong earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck Turkey’s Gaziantep city near the country’s border with Syria, authorities said.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the temblor occurred at 4.17 a.m. at a depth of 17.9 km, the BBC reported.

Interior Minister Suleymon Soylu said 10 cities were affected: Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Osmaniye, Adiyaman, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Diyarbakir and Kilis.

The tremor was also felt in Syria, Lebanon, and Cyprus. The authorities have said that a number of buildings in Gaziantep have collapsed, and some people may be trapped.

Turkish seismologists said that a second tremor hit the region just minutes later. Turkey lies in one of the world’s most active earthquake zones.

In 1999, more than 17,000 people were killed after a powerful tremor rocked the northwest of the country.

In a more recent quake, 117 people died when a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the city of Izmir on October 30, 2020.

SA20: Klaasen’s majestic 104 not out keeps DSG’s semifinal hopes alive

0

Heinrich Klaasen produced innings for the ages to keep Durban’s Super Giants (DGS) hopes of progressing to the SA20 semifinals alive as the visitors claimed a bonus-point 151-run victory over the Pretoria Capitals.

Klaasen royally entertained the Centurion crowd with a sparkling 104 not out of just 44 balls. The Protea’s middle-order batter peppered the grass banks with 10 boundaries and half-a-dozen sixes.

Klaasen’s pyrotechnics saw the Super Giants post a mammoth 254/4 — the highest score of the maiden Betway SA20 tournament — surpassing the Capitals and Super Giants’ previous 216.

The Super Giants arrived at Centurion with major intent as they shuffled their batting line-up around. Captain Quinton de Kock and Australian international Ben McDermott provided the early impetus with a rolling opening partnership that yielded 76 runs in just 6.1 overs.

De Kock was the first to depart for 43 off 20 balls. McDermott maintained the momentum with Klaasen, who was promoted to No 3 as the pair added a further 40 off just 20 balls.

It was from there on that Klaasen went into overdrive mode though. David Willey did not last long, but Klaasen and Wiaan Mulder added a further 54 off only 24 balls.

However, the real entertainment was only just beginning with Matthew Breetzke joining Klaasen at the crease for the final six overs.

With the Capitals not having captain Wayne Parnell’s services available on Sunday due to the skipper having suffered a groin strain the previous night against MI Cape Town, Klaasen, and Breetzke took full advantage.

The pair added 84 off the final 36 deliveries with Breetzke (46 not out off 21 balls) also showing off his class with a couple of thunderous sixes on bended knee that sailed over the covers.

Unfortunately for the Centurion crowd that once again came out in their masses to support the SA20 table-toppers, the Capital’s batting unit failed to get out the blocks in the run chase as they folded for just 103.

Junior Dala was the pick of the Super Giants’ bowlers with figures of 3/33, while Dwaine Pretorius (2/20) and Mulder (2/17) claimed two wickets apiece.

DSG moved to 19 points on the log but was unable to surpass Sunrisers Eastern Cape on net-run with Aiden Markram’s team now also joining the Capitals and Joburg Super Kings in the semifinals.

Lance Klusener’s Super Giants will await the result of the Capitals and Paarl Royals, who also have 19 points, on Tuesday at Centurion for their fate to be decided.

Telangana launches India’s first Mobility Valley

The Telangana government on Monday unveiled Telangana Mobility Valley, India’s first new mobility-focused cluster to accelerate the growth of sustainable mobility in the country.

Telangana Mobility Valley (TMV) aims to attract investments of around Rs 50,000 crore and generate more than 4 lakh jobs in the next 5 years.

Industries and Commerce Minister K. T. Rama Rao made the announcement while inaugurating the first edition of the Mobility Next Hyderabad EV Summit.

He said that TMV has already generated significant momentum in the industry. Amara Raja will invest Rs 9,500 crore in setting up Li-Ion giga-factory while Hyundai will invest Rs 1,400 crore in setting up Automotive Proving Grounds.

Bilti Electric is to invest Rs 1,100 crore for setting up an e3W manufacturing plant while Allox is to invest Rs 750 crore to set up India’s first multi-gigawatt cathode manufacturing.

The minister revealed that Attero would invest Rs 600 crore in setting up a battery recycling plant and Gravton would invest Rs 150 crore in setting up e2W manufacturing.

Apollo will set up a Digital Innovation Centre for driving efficiency. Bosch Global Software Technologies will hire up to 3,000 employees to develop AI and safety solutions in automobiles. Fisker has set up its first facility outside the US for developing engineering R&D. MG Group has set up an EV Park in Hyderabad to support start-ups.

The Telangana government, along with TASK, has set up the Kalam Centre For Automotive Excellence (CAE) to upskill youth in e-Mobility.

Further, investments aggregating Rs 3,000 crore are in advanced stages and will be announced in the next two weeks. These investments will further strengthen the electric 3-wheeler, electric 2-wheeler, and charging equipment manufacturing ecosystem in Telangana, Rama Rao said.

The state has engaged leading consulting firm, Boston Consulting Group to help conceptualize and develop a truly differentiated vision for the TMV, which aims to facilitate companies across all segments of sustainable mobility – electric 2-wheeler/3-wheeler/4-wheeler, advanced cell chemistry, and hydrogen fuel cells, Tier 1 and Tier 2 Component manufacturers and Auto Engineering R&D companies

As part of TMV, the state is developing four mega clusters in and around Hyderabad: EV manufacturing clusters in Zaheerabad and Seetharampur, an energy storage system (ESS) cluster in Divitipally, and an innovation cluster at Yenkathala.

“Each of the clusters will be equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure to reduce the cost of operations for their tenant. For instance, we are setting India’s most comprehensive shared testing and validation infrastructure at Yenkathala. This includes state-of-the-art labs for EV Powertrain, EV Battery, ADAS, NVH, EMI-EMC and Component Test Labs and India’s first CAV proving grounds to test Autonomous Vehicles in 100+ acres,” the minister said.

The state government has signed an MOU with ATS-TUV Rheinland, a leading German services provider which will invest Rs 250 crore to develop and operate these facilities in Yenkathala.

“Our ESS cluster will have the world-class infrastructure to manufacture lithium-ion cells, cathode active battery material, and other lithium-ion components. The cluster will also have a battery recycling facility to minimize carbon footprint and reduce costs of production for developing battery packs for EVs,” the minister said.

He said in TMV the government will bring together industry and academia to set up a series of Centers of Excellence (CoE) to create industry-ready talent.

He announced that India’s first CoE in Automotive cybersecurity in collaboration between BITS Hyderabad and Bosch will be launched in the upcoming academic year.

This COE between BITS and Bosch will set an example for the country for creating talent to meet the changing requirements of the automotive industry

“Further, we will be announcing at least four other COEs over the next few weeks on topics like Automotive Cybersecurity, Automotive Artificial Intelligence, Electrochemistry, and Modelling & Simulation,” he added.

The minister said that another focus area for TMV is to promote mobility startups in the state

T-Hub, India’s largest innovation center, has partnered with leading mobility corporates such as Maruti Suzuki, Nissan, and Uber for identifying innovative start-ups and has incubated successful start-ups such as Biliti Electric, Hala Mobility, etc.

The state has entered into an MoU with Plug and Play to set up co-working and incubation spaces for start-ups. To identify and support entrepreneurs with innovative ideas, the state is organizing the ‘Grand Start-up challenge’ as part of Hyderabad E-Mobility week. The state will be supporting selected ideas through grants and incubation support. Over 100 start-ups in the mobility space have submitted cutting-edge ideas.

He announced that the Hyderabad E Mobility will be held regularly to foster collaboration by bringing together the thought leaders, experts, and global automotive ecosystem players to chart a course for sustainable mobility.

In addition to the Summit, the Hyderabad E-Mobility week includes RallE, which was organized with the objective to promote e-mobility amongst the citizens and saw participation from more than 700 EVs.

Hyderabad E-Motor Show will provide a platform for automotive companies to showcase their next-gen EV models.

To showcase the power of E-Mobility, Hyderabad will become the first city in India to host the Formula E race.

WhatsApp rolling out longer group subjects, descriptions on iOS beta

0

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out longer group subjects and descriptions on iOS beta. This will make it easier for users to better describe groups and reports WABetaInfo.

Beta users can now choose a longer group description, up to 2048 characters, as the previous limit was 512 characters.

Longer group descriptions will help group admins to save additional information for describing their groups.

Moreover, the characters of the group subject have been increased to 100 to provide admins more freedom when naming their groups.

The ability to choose a longer group subject and description is available for all users after installing the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS update from the TestFlight app, the report said.

Last week, a report mentioned that the messaging platform was rolling out similar changes to the group subjects and descriptions on the Android beta.

Meanwhile, it was reported that the platform was working on a new feature that will allow users to pin messages within chats and groups.

Twitter fixes bug that showed users ‘this tweet is unavailable’: Musk

0

Twitter CEO Elon Musk said on Monday that the micro-blogging platform had fixed the bug that showed users “this tweet is unavailable”.

When a user queried: “Is it just us seeing ‘this tweet is unavailable’ on more and more quote tweets in the feed, but when you click on it, the tweet appears? @TwitterSupport @elonmusk.”

Musk replied: “We think we fixed this bug today. Please lmk if you’re still seeing it.” Several users shared their status related to the bug on Musk’s post.

While one user said, “fixed for me”, another commented, “that’s old, ‘conservative bug’ that disappears tweets the AI doesn’t like. Years back it was a very regular thing to see”.

In December last year, Twitter went down for several users globally including in India, and Musk said that the outage was because of backend changes to make the micro-blogging platform faster.

For some users, timelines did not refresh and many accounts were shown as non-existent.

Also, the platform showed error messages to several users, “Something went wrong, but don’t fret — it’s not your fault. Let’s try again”.

PM Modi to inaugurate India Energy Week in B’luru

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit poll-bound Karnataka for the third time in a period of 36 days on Monday. PM Modi on his one-day visit will inaugurate the India Energy Week organized at Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) in Bengaluru.

On his first visit in February, he will also inaugurate the HAL Helicopter Factory in Gubbi Taluk of Tumakuru. This manufacturing facility spread across 615 acres of land is dubbed as India’s largest manufacturing facility of Light Utility Helicopters (LUH) and Indian Multirole Helicopters (IMRH). He will also address a gathering after the incident. PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the unit in 2016.

The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for Tumakuru Industrial Township, an Industrial Node on Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor. The project is slated to generate employment for over 90,000 people. It is spread over 1,722 acres and is being implemented at a cost of Rs 1,701 crore.

Further, PM Modi will later inaugurate Multi-Village Water Supply Schemes under Jal Jeevan Mission in Tiptur taluk and Chikkanayakanahalli taluk in Tumakuru, which will provide treated water for 1.86 lakh people from the Hemavathi River at a cost of Rs 435 crore and Rs 115 crore respectively.

Karnataka is heading for elections in two months. His visit to inaugurate Shivamogga airport on February 27 is confirmed already. PM Modi will also come down to Bengaluru to inaugurate the Aero India Show, held between Feb 13 and 17.

The BJP insiders say that PM Modi is highlighting the development and contributions of the double-engine government at the state and Center rather than criticizing the opposition parties.

The Opposition parties are targeting the BJP and former CM H.D. Kumaraswamy has stirred a controversy by stating that the BJP is conspiring to make a Brahmin candidate the CM in Karnataka. It is to be seen whether PM Modi will make any comments on opposition parties’ attacks.

Allahabad HC declines to order killing of birds, dogs

0

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has declined to issue directions to Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) to kill birds and animals that have become a nuisance in the state capital.

Dismissing the plea, the bench held: “Such a direction cannot be issued by the Court as there is no provision which obliges the LMC to kill innocent animals.”

The bench of Justices Ramesh Sinha and Subhash Vidyarthi passed the order on a PIL by a local lawyer Manoj Dubey.

Arguing for the petitioner, senior advocate Sudeep Seth had sought the issuance of a direction for LMC to discharge the duty of eliminating birds, animals, strays, and ownerless dogs causing a nuisance in Lucknow. The bench declined to issue any such direction.

Welcoming the verdict, animal rights activist Kamna Pandey said: “It is a landmark verdict. It is significant and cuts through the current motivated campaign against dogs seeking to create an atmosphere of hate and hostility towards man’s best friend. It restores balance and returns good sense to the prevailing debate.”

ILT20: Shanaka, Sikandar Raza steer Dubai Capitals to victory over MI Emirates

0

Dasun Shanaka and Sikandar Raza struck unbeaten half-centuries as they steered Dubai Capitals to a stunning seven-wicket victory over MI Emirates in the 29th match of the DP World ILT20 at the Dubai International Stadium in front of a large Sunday crowd.

Chasing MI Emirates’ 164 for 7, Dasun Shanaka and Sikandar Raza scored unbeaten knocks of 58 and 56 runs respectively off 36 deliveries each. Shanaka hit five boundaries and three sixes while Raza scored four boundaries and four sixes. Their unbeaten 122 runs partnership for the fourth wicket in 11.3 overs ensured Dubai Capitals victory with 11 balls to spare.

Though MI Emirates has already qualified for the playoff, Dubai Capitals now moves to the fourth spot with nine points, above Sharjah Warriors. The clash between Sharjah Warriors with seven points and Gulf Giants, who are in the second slot, at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Monday will thus decide the last spot in the playoffs.

Dubai Capitals won the toss and elected to bowl. MI Emirates’ opener Andre Fletcher hit two consecutive boundaries off Fred Klaassen in the first over but fell to the first ball of the second over from Jake Ball edging to wicket-keeper Robin Uthappa for 9. One-drop Bas de Leede followed the losing leg before Ball’s fourth delivery of the same over for 2.

Lorcan Tucker, who joined opener Muhammad Waseem, took two boundaries off Hazrat Luqman who bowled the third over. Waseem too smashed Ball for a boundary to mid-on, and then in the next over he hit the first six of the match off Akif Raja into the mid-wicket stands. Tucker on 21 got bowled by Sikandar Raza when he missed a paddle sweep. At the end of the powerplay, MI Emirates was 58 for 3.

Waseem hit his second six off Raza over midwicket in the eighth over but got clean bowled by Zampa in the ninth over while attempting a slog sweep for 31. At the halfway mark, MI Emirates was 77 for 4. Dan Mousely got dropped on 3 by Dasun Shanaka off Luqman despite getting to the ball running in from the square leg.

Pooran played some aggressive shots and took the score past the 100-run mark in the 14th over. Zampa, who was re-introduced for the 17th over, was greeted by Pooran with a six to square leg but he fell to the fourth ball of that over caught at sweep cover by Klaassen for 43. Jordan Thompson hit Klaassen for two sixes in the 19th to take the score past the 150-mark. Thompson got out to the first ball of the last over lofting Ball straight to Powell at mid-off for 16. In the last five overs, MI Emirates scored 48 runs and lost three wickets to post a challenging total of 164 for 7 in 20 overs.

Brad Wheal, opening the bowling for MI Emirates, gave away just four runs in his first over while Craig Overton yielded just one run in the second over. In the third over Dubai Capitals opener, Robin Uthappa hit Wheal for a six and Munsey too picked a boundary off him. Munsey also hit Overton for a six to accelerate the run flow. Uthappa then hit Zahoor Khan for a six to the backward square but fell to Overton in the sixth over slashing and edging to the wicketkeeper Tucker for 29.

At the end of the power play, Dubai Capitals was 44 for 1. Munsey too quickly followed miscuing a reverse sweep to Wheal off left-arm spinner Zahir Khan for 14. Two balls later, he took the prize wicket of Rovman Powell who slog-swept to Mousley for a duck. Khan yielded no runs from that over too.

Sikandar Raza and Dasun Shanaka scored 62 for 3 in 10 overs. Needing 103 runs from the last ten overs, Raza went for his shots and hit Zahir Khan for a six to long-on and also scored two boundaries off that over. Shanaka too hit Zahoor Khan who was introduced for the 13th over for a six and a boundary. Their partnership strengthened and runs began to flow easily.

From the last five overs, Dubai Capitals needed 37 runs after Shanaka had punished Jordan Thompson for 15 runs which included six and two boundaries. Shanaka reached his half-century in 32 balls and the pair recorded their century partnership in 60 balls. Raza too reached his half-century in 34 balls with a six off Thompson. They ensured their team’s victory in 18.1 overs.

Pakistan’s oil industry faces collapse amid liquidity crunch

0

Pakistan’s oil companies have warned that the industry is on the “brink of collapse” as the dollar liquidity crisis persists and their cost of doing balloons due to the Pakistani rupee (PKR) devaluation.

To meet the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) demand, the government removed the dollar cap, resulting in the rupee falling to a historic low of 276.58 PKR in the interbank market, Geo News reported.

In a letter to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and Energy Ministry, the Oil Companies Advisory Council (OCAC) said that the “sudden depreciation” of the local rupee has caused losses worth billions of rupees to the industry as their letters of credit (LCs) are expected to be settled on the new rates, “whereas the related product has already been sold”.

The government has also restricted LCs due to dwindling foreign exchange reserves, which fell to $3,086.2 million as of January 27, and are enough for just 18.5 days, Geo News reported.

Pakistan is facing a balance of payments crisis and the plummeting value of the rupee is pushing up the price of imported goods. Energy comprises a large chunk of Pakistan’s import bill.

Pakistan typically meets more than a third of its annual power demand, using imported natural gas, prices for which shot up following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

These losses, the OCAC said, not only have an impact on the profitability of the sector, which is already under severe pressure but also on its viability since these setbacks in some cases might exceed the “entire year’s profit for the sector”, Geo News reported.

“It is requested to urgently revise this mechanism and ensure that exchange losses of the sector are fully reimbursed if the viability of the industry and supplies to retail outlets are to be ensured,” the OCAC told the authorities.

The letter mentioned that OGRA has adopted the practice of not fully passing on the impact of the rupee depreciation and instead putting an immense burden on the sector.

Due to the challenges still being faced by the sector of previous exchange rate adjustments and the enormous impact of the current depreciation, the OCAC said it is crucial that OGRA passes the impact of the exchange rates in one go and not stagger this compensation, Geo News reported.

The council added that due to an increase in oil prices and successive depreciation of the Pakistani rupee over the last 18 months, the trade finance limits available from the banking sector to the industry have become inadequate.

As a result of the recent devaluation alone, the LC limits have overnight shrunk by 15-20 percent, the OCAC said.

Shalin Bhanot’s ex-wife Dalljiet Kaur finds love again, to wed in March

Dalljiet Kaur, an ex-wife of Shalin Bhanot, recently got engaged to U.K.-born Nikhil Patel, who is employed in a finance company. The pair exchanged rings in Nepal and are set to take the wedding vows this March.

After her wedding with Nikhil, Dalljiet will move to London with her son Jaydon. Initially, Dalljiet will move with her kid to Kenya as Nikhil is placed there for work, but after a few years, the couple will move to London.

The ‘Kulvaddhu’ actress also revealed how she and Nikhil met in Dubai at a common friend’s party and connected with each other due to their love for children. The actress also revealed that she noticed blue nail paint on Nikhil’s toes. When she asked him about it, he replied with an earnest: “I am a proud dad of two girls.”

Dalljiet said, quoted by News 18: “Romance wasn’t in the air back then; it was just two single parents chatting. Love happened with time. It was our love for our children that connected us.”

She revealed that while Nikhil’s younger daughter Anika lives with her mother in the U.S., the elder daughter Aariyana will live with the couple.

IND v AUS: John Wright dismisses Ian Healy’s comments on ‘unfair’ pitches for Test series

0

With only a few days left before the start of the India versus Australia Test series next week, there is a lot of focus on the pitches that the four-match series will be played on with the Australians raising concerns on rank turners that their teams will have to play on.

Former Australia wicket-keeper Ian Healy has accused the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will provide square-turners and termed such tactics “unfair”. However, former India coach John Wright has hit back at Healy claiming that teams playing at home are entitled to produce pitches to suit their own team.

Healy, the cricketer-turned-commentator, started the debate by claiming that India could win the series only by producing “unreasonable wickets”, adding that it only benefits Indian cricketers and should not be promoted again.

“They (India) have got a good team but I’m not too scared of their spinners unless they produce unreasonable wickets. If they produce unreasonable wickets like they did half the series last time (we won’t win), two wickets were just terrible, unfair, spinners jumping over your head on day one,” Healy was quoted as saying by SEN Network.

“So that type of thing they will play better on than we will, but if they get flat wickets that India used to put out, nice flat batting wickets and bowlers have to work really hard, I think we can do it. But (my prediction is) 2-1 India, if (Mitchell) stars is unavailable in the first Test,” Healy said.

John dismissed the claims about unfair pitch and said such tactics are not unfair.

“Countries playing at home are entitled to produce pitches to suit their own team. That’s not unfair it’s what makes test cricket great #INDvsAUS #ianhealy,” he said in a tweet.

The Indians have earlier rejected such claims by visiting teams especially Australia over spin-friendly tracks saying when they tour other countries, they have to play on pitches aiding fast or swing bowling.

Meta’s new headset to feature better MR tech: Zuckerberg

0

Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the new next-generation consumer headset which will be launched “later this year” will feature better-mixed reality (MR) technology.

“The Meta Reality ecosystem is relatively new, but I think it’s going to grow a lot in the next few years,” Zuckerberg said in the company’s latest earnings release.

“Later this year, we’re going to launch our next-generation consumer headset, which will feature Meta Reality as well, and I expect that this is going to establish this technology as the baseline for all headsets going forward, and eventually of course for augmented reality (AR) glasses as well.”

He also mentioned that there are now more than 200 applications on the company’s virtual reality (VR) devices that have made more than $1 million in revenue.

Last month, Meta improved its Quest’s hand-tracking technology with the new Hand Tracking 2.1 update, which features upgrades in reliability, accuracy, and system pinch quality to improve the consistency and flexibility of hand inputs in users’ VR applications.

Meanwhile, the company introduced a new heart rate tracking feature and Health Connect by Android integration on Meta Quest, so that users can keep track of all their fitness statistics.
