Davis Cup: Huesler, Zverev win to leave Switzerland-Germany level; Norrie keeps GB in hunt

0

Alexandeor Zverev picked an opportune moment to record his second competitive win in eight months, defeating Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 6-1 to draw Germany level with Switzerland in their Davis Cup Qualifier in Trier, Germany.

In Bogota, it was all square for Great Britain and hosts Colombia after Colombia’s Nicolas Mejia earned his first Top 100 win with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 result against Daniel Evans, Cameron Norrie leveled the tie at 1-1 by beating Nicolas Barrientos 6-2, 7-5, according to information available on daviscup.com website. The focus was on Zverev in the Switzerland v Germany tie.

Zverev, whose return to competitive action after ankle ligament surgery yielded three defeats from four matches in Australia at the turn of the month, looked much more like his old self in a commanding victory over the three-time Grand Slam champion.

The world No. 14 saw off Wawrinka in an hour and 36 minutes to cancel out Marc-Andrea Huesler’s battling 2-6 6-2 6-4 triumph over Oscar Otte earlier in the day.

“I think it’s important to go into tomorrow’s ties with a 1-1 [scoreline],” said Zverev. “Obviously I’m very happy with my game. I think that was the best match since my injury. It’s going in a positive way, and I hope I can continue progressing,” he was quoted as saying in a report on the ATP Tour website.

Wawrinka had lost all four of his previous meetings with Zverev and was unable to break that duck on Friday night.

“I think I played a lot more aggressively and maybe Stan’s spirit went down a little bit, but in the end, I picked up my level and I’m very happy with that,” said Zverev.

The Germans will look to Andrea Mies and Tim Puetz on Saturday to give them an all-important 2-1 advantage ahead of the reverse singles later in the day.

Ugo Humbert overcame Marton Fucsovics 6-3 6-2 to earn a much-needed point for France on Friday in the Davis Cup Qualifiers, levelling the score at 1-1 against Hungary after Zsombor Piros stunned Benjamin Bonzi 7-6(4) 6-3 in the opening rubber.

The score being level in this tie might not come as a surprise, but how both teams earned a point was a little unexpected. First, World No. 182 Piros pulled off a stunning upset to topple Bonzi, before Humbert came out fighting in his Davis Cup debut against Fucsovics to leave the tie finely balanced.

In Bogota, Mejia clinched his milestone victory with a break in the final game against Evans, a blazing backhand passing shot sparking wild celebrations in the Colombian capital. After the competitors split a pair of one-sided sets, the 22-year-old fended off three break points in the first game of the decider before piling on the pressure late.

While he could not convert on two break chances as Evans held in a marathon game to level the set at 4-4, Mejias responded with a love hold before clinching victory with his third break of the two-hour, 31-minute contest.

In the day’s second match, Norrie coped with the pressure of the 1-0 deficit and the volume of the home crowd, claiming an early break against Barrientos to settle British nerves. The British No. 1 again scored an immediate break to open the second set, but the Colombian snapped back with his first break of the match.

Barrientos then created five break points on return at 1-2, but he could not break Norrie’s dogged resistance. The Colombian earned another break chance at 2-3 but was again denied, and ultimately paid the price when a missed volley handed Norrie a crucial late break in the set’s 11th game.

With the match on his racquet, Norrie finished the job to earn Great Britain its first point in the tie.

SERBIA LEADS IN NORWAY

Contrasting wins for Laslo Djere and Miomir Kecmanovic left Serbia 2-0 up after Friday’s Davis Cup Qualifier play in Oslo.

After Kecmanovic cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 triumph against Norway’s Andreja Petrovic, Djere scored a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(8) win against Viktor Durasovic, the stand-in No. 1 for the Norwegians after Casper Ruud’s late withdrawal.

World No. 65 Djere saved a match point in the decisive tie-break before clinching victory on his third chance. The Serbian started well, not conceding a break point until the seventh game of set two, but found himself in a third set as Durasovic battled back with the help of his home crowd. Djere led 5-2 in set three but was dragged into a final-set tie-break after another surge by his opponent.

YouTube Music contract employees on strike over unfair labour practices

0

Dozens of third-party employees at YouTube Music, hired by Alphabet sub-contractor tech company Cognizant, have gone on strike over alleged unfair labor practices.

According to a report in The Verge, 40 striking workers alleged that both companies’ management has “leveraged unfair labor practices to get in the way of their union drive”.

They alleged that the vast majority of them are ready to vote yes in a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election.

“In an act of retaliation, our employer is forcing an end to remote work before the vote, which would dramatically interfere with the fair voting conditions mandated by federal law,” said YouTube Music generalist Sam Regan at a strike in Austin, Texas.

YouTube Music’s content operations team is expected to return to the Austin office early next week. However, Alphabet Workers Union (AWU) said the majority of workers were hired remotely.

“Workers are paid as little as $19 dollars an hour and thus, cannot afford the relocation, travel or childcare costs associated with in-person work,” the AWU said in a statement.

The AWU had filed an unfair labor practice charge with the NLRB. Alphabet recently laid off 12,000 employees or 6 percent of its global workforce.

Google employees also staged protests in the US this week to call attention to labor conditions for sub-contracted workers and to support thousands of their recently laid-off co-workers.

Nearly 50 Google employees also protested outside a Ninth Avenue store in New York shortly after parent company Alphabet announced fourth-quarter profits of $13.6 billion.

Bundesliga: Neuer considers leaving Bayern due to dismissal of goalkeeper coach

0

Manuel Neuer has attacked Bayern Munich club leaders over the dismissal of goalkeeper coach Toni Tapalovic.

The 36-year-old said that he considered leaving the club “as this was a heavy blow for me as I was already lying on the ground.”

While the 2014 world champion is recovering from a skiing accident leading to a broken leg, Bayern announced that they had sacked 42-year-old Tapalovic due to disagreements with head coach Julian Nagelsmann.

The Bayern keeper is sidelined for at least until the end of the 2022-2023 season. Neuer said he “thought about everything, including my future with the club.”

The 2020 treble winner talked about the feeling his heart had been ripped out, saying the club’s action was the most “brutal thing I experienced in my career.”

Tapalovic not only had been Bayern’s goalkeeper coach since 2011 but also is a trusted family friend of Neuer.

The German international said the surprising action felt worse than the hostility from the club’s supporters he faced when joining Bayern in 2011 due to his past in the shirt of Schalke.

Neuer questioned the club’s claimed family atmosphere expressed in the slogan “we are what we are.”

“Bayern is claiming to be different from other clubs, as a fact like a family. Then something unbelievable like this happens, I have never seen before,” the goalkeeper said.

Bayern officials assured him that Tapalovic’s dismissal wasn’t meant to target him personally. “I told them I don’t accept the reasons they are talking about, and I had the feeling my perspective was heard,” said Neuer.

The keeper said his future working relationship with Nagelsmann will be carried out on a professional basis, as German media assumed the relationship between the coach and keeper has been damaged. Neuer spoke about his feeling “of a guilty conscience” due to his skiing accident.

“It felt like a lump in my throat, and I cried. I can hardly deal with the fact to disappoint people around me,” he added.

Reports speak of an open fracture causing a long recovery process with an uncertain outcome. Bayern has signed Swiss international Yann Sommer from Moenchengladbach.

Lionel Messi considering playing on until 2026 World Cup: Report

0

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has left open the possibility of playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but says his participation will depend on ‘many things’.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward previously declared the 2022 World Cup in Qatar would mark his last appearance in football’s showpiece event.

But Argentina’s triumphant campaign — in which Messi scored seven goals and won the best player award of the tournament — has prompted him to reconsider the possibility of playing in a sixth World Cup.

Messi will turn 39 during the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, reports Xinhua.

“I don’t know, I always said that due to age it seems to me that it will be very difficult to make it to 2026,” the 35-year-old told Argentine sports daily Ole.

“I love playing football, I love what I do and as long as I’m good and feel fit and continue to enjoy it, I’m going to do it. But it seems like a lot to go until the next World Cup. I’m going to see where my career is going, what I am going to do and it depends on many things.”

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni told reporters in December last year that he would keep the No. 10 shirt for Messi for as long as he wants to play.

Meanwhile, Messi said he was still on an emotional high after Argentina’s penalty shootout victory over France in the World Cup final in Lusail on December 18, 2022.

It came less than 18 months after the Albiceleste beat Brazil in the Copa America final – the team’s first major trophy since the 1993 Copa America.

“Achieving it at the end of my career was amazing,” Messi said. “If it had happened earlier, it would have been great too, obviously. But then you have your whole career ahead of you. My career has almost ended and I don’t think there’s a better way to finish than that.”

Aussies playing usual mind games, Ashwin dismisses Smith’s comment on relevance of tour games

0

As they get ready for the start of the Border-Gavaskar Test series next week, divergent voices have emerged from the Australian camp and former players about the team going directly into the first Test in Nagpur without playing a tour match.

Former captain and key batter, Steve Smith, is one of those who support this move not to have a tour match, claiming them to be “irrelevant” as the tourists usually get to play the Test matches on tracks that are completely opposite to those provided for tour games. He said that Australians would gain more training at the mini-camp at Alur near Bengaluru than playing the tour game.

But India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has dismissed Smith’s comments as “mind games” that the Aussies usually play ahead of key tours.

“We normally have two tour games over in England. This time we don’t have a tour game in India. The last time (2017) we went I’m pretty sure we got served up a green top (to practice on) and it was sort of irrelevant. Hopefully, we get really good training facilities where the ball is likely to do what it’s likely to do out in the middle, and we can get our practice in,” Smith was quoted as saying by the Australian media ahead of the tour.

Smith said, ‘We got a green wicket in Brabourne and a completely opposite one in the first Test (during the 2017 series). In all fairness, it was a rank-turner in Pune.”

Ashwin admitted that playing tour games becomes too much as tours are so packed but felt that they do have some relevance.

“Australia is not playing any tour matches this time. This is not new. Even India avoids tour games when they go on a few overseas tours. Since Team India’s schedule is packed with international games, it is not possible to turn up for practice games with the same intensity,” Ashwin said while previewing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on his YouTube channel.

“We might have given them a green track, but nobody plans all these things. However, Australia is known for its mind games and sleds before a series. They love doing that. It’s their style of cricket,” Ashwin added.

The 2023 Border-Gavaskar Series comprises four Tests with the first one at the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium in Nagpur from February 9-13. The second Test will be played in New Delhi followed by the third at Dharamshala and the final one at Ahmedabad.

The Australians are expecting rank-turners in all venues and are currently practicing their sweep shots in Bengaluru.

ILT20: Breezy knocks by Md Waseem, Pollard take MI Emirates to playoffs

0

Breezy knocks by consistent opener Muhammad Waseem and skipper Kieron Pollard backed by Dwayne Bravo’s three-wicket spell carried MI Emirates into the playoffs with an impressive 18-run win over Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the 26th match of the DP World ILT20 here.

Abu Dhabi Knight Riders’ winless run continued after they let MI Emirates post 180 for 4 in 20 overs through some poor fielding and unimpressive bowling at the Zayed Cricket Stadium on Friday night.

Dropping Waseem thrice, they let the high-scoring UAE opener flourish and hit 60 runs off 43 balls with six sixes and one boundary. Skipper Pollard’s cameo of 43 off just 17 balls with four boundaries and three sixes swelled the total.

Chasing the target, Abu Dhabi was bowled out for 162 in 19.2 overs with Dwayne Bravo producing a fine spell of 3 for 37, backed by Imran Tahir (2-20) and Zahoor Khan (2-33). Andre Russell’s fighting knock of 42 off 22 balls with five boundaries and two sixes went in vain for the hosts.

Abu Dhabi Knight Riders won the toss and elected to bowl. Their opening bowler and medium pacer Akeal Hosein gave away just a single in the first over. Opener Andre Fletcher got the first boundary of the day off Marchant de Lange through an edge over the slips. Muhammad Waseem too scored a boundary off Hosein past point. They scored 29 runs in the Power-play. In the seventh over, skipper Sunil Narine provided the breakthrough having Fletcher caught and bowled for 22.

Muhammad Waseem got a life when batting on 14, as Brandon King at a backward point dropped him off, Russell. At the halfway mark, MI Emirates was 55 for 1 with Lorcan Tucker too picking the gaps correctly. In the 13th over, Waseem hit Matiullah Khan for two successive sixes to score 16 runs off the over. Tucker too hit Hosein for a six-over long-on. Waseem then went on to hit two successive sixes off Sabir Ali to reach his half-century in 38 balls. This was followed by another six off Narine over square leg. He also smashed another six to mid-wicket in the same over and also escaped being caught again at cover.

Tucker who took 23 balls to score 33 runs retired to accelerate the run flow. Nicholas Pooran replaced him at the crease but Waseem on 60 got clean bowled to the first ball of the 16th over by Marchant de Lange.

Pollard joined Pooran and tried to accelerate the run flow. He picked two successive boundaries off Russell’s first and second deliveries of the 18th over. He also hit the fourth delivery for a six-to-long, then edged the fifth for a boundary, and then hit the last ball for a six-to-long. Twenty-six runs were scored off that over.

Marchant de Lange was hit for a boundary to the backward square while Pooran hit him for a six to deep mid-wicket. Pollard hit Sabir Ali, who bowled the last over, for a straight six and then fell edging the next ball to wicketkeeper Joe Clarke for 43. Pooran and Pollard thus added 56 runs in just 25 balls. Pooran remained unbeaten on 10 and MI Emirates posted an impressive 180 for 4.

Chasing the target, Abu Dhabi lost opener Paul Stirling to the second ball of the first over from Trent Boult for a duck caught by Pollard at mid-off. Boult began with a wicket maiden as well. Brandon King, who joined opener, Joe Clarke, hit Boult for six and two boundaries but fell to Imran Tahir in the fourth over caught by Fletcher at deep mid-wicket for 20.

Joe Clarke and Charith Asalanka took the score to 50 by the end of the Powerplay. Tahir struck again with the third ball of the second over, trapping Asalanka who went for a sweep, missed and got a trapped leg before for 17. Andre Russell walked in and hit the second ball he faced from Tahir for a six and then slashed Fazalhaq Farooqi for another six.

MI Emirates’ champion bowler Dwyane Bravo struck in his first over clean bowling Joe Clarke for 22. Abu Dhabi went past the 100-run mark in 10.4 overs with Russell scoring two consecutive boundaries off Bravo. UAE’s Zahoor ended Abu Dhabi’s challenge in the 13th over by taking the valuable wicket off Russell caught by Waseem at mid-wicket for 42.

After Russell, wickets began to fall in quick succession. This included Narine caught behind off Farooqi for 11, Hosein caught and bowled by Bravo for a duck, and Connor Esterhuizen caught by Fletcher at mid-wicket off Zahoor Khan for 17. De Lange and Matiullah Khan held on but Bravo had Khan caught by Pollard at mid-off for 2. Mousley bowled De Lange for 19 to bowl out Abu Dhabi.

Brief scores:

MI Emirates 180/4 in 20 overs (Andre Fletcher 22, Muhammad Waseem 60, Lorcan Tucker 33, Kieron Pollard 43) bt Abu Dhabi Knight Riders 162 all out in 19.2 overs (Joe Clarke 22, Andre Russell 42, Imran Tahir 2-20, Zahoor Khan 2-33, Dwayne Bravo 3-37).

Olympic champion pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis begins season with a world-leading mark

0

Olympic champion and world record-holder Armand Duplantis aka ‘Mondo Duplantis’, competing in his eponymous meetings here, got his 2023 campaigns off to strong starts with performances that took them straight to the top of the world lists.

Duplantis, competing at the Mondo Classic, won the pole vault with a Swedish indoor all-comers’ record of 6.10m on Thursday night.

The event featured 10 of the best pole vaulters in the world, including Rio 2016 champion Thiago Braz of Brazil, who also won bronze in Tokyo.

Duplantis opened his series with a first-time clearance at 5.67m and followed it with another successful jump at 5.82m. Four other men – USA’s KC Lightfoot, Ernest John Obiena of the Philippines, Australia’s Kurtis Marschall, and Norway’s Pal Haugen Lillefosse – cleared that height and progressed on to 5.91m.

The world and Olympic champion registered his first foul of the evening at 6.00m but got over on his second try. Lightfoot and Obiena were unable to go higher than 5.91m, leaving Duplantis to move the bar up to 6.10m. After two misses, the Swede pole vaulter got over it on his third attempt, adding six centimeters to the meeting record he established last year.

He ended with three attempts at a would-be world record height of 6.22m, all of which were unsuccessful, but he was nevertheless satisfied with his winning height of 6.10m — not just his best-ever season opener, but the highest season-opening performance of any pole vaulter in history.

“I’m happy with the result,” he told Swedish broadcaster SVT after the event. “I’m happy to get over 6.10m. I got the juices flowing on that last attempt. I was happy to do this in Uppsala because I know that a lot of people came out to watch me.”

The 23-year-old Swedish pole vaulter has a breakthrough season in 2022, during which he set three world records, won two global titles, won 18 of his 19 competitions, and vaulted six meters or higher 23 times.

He was also named the World Athlete of the Year at the World Athletics Awards 2022 in December.

Duplantis is a current world outdoor and indoor record holder, the Olympic and World outdoor and indoor champion, the European outdoor and indoor champion, and the Diamond League champion.
