Israel, Sudan to sign deal to normalize ties: FM

0

Following his return from a “historic” visit to Khartoum, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen announced here that his country and Sudan have agreed to normalize ties and sign a peace agreement in Washington in a few months’ time.

Addressing a press conference here late Thursday, Cohen said that he met Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council and de-facto leader of the country, and other senior officials during the day-long trip, Xinhua news agency reported.

The visit to Sudan which had been made “with the consent of the US, lays the foundations for a historic peace agreement with a strategic Arab and Muslim country”.

“The peace agreement between Israel and Sudan will promote regional stability and contribute to the national security of the State of Israel,” the Foreign Minister said.

Cohen said a signing ceremony is expected to take place after the planned transfer of power in Sudan to a civilian government following the military coup in October 2021 which was led by Al-Burhan.

In a separate statement issued in Khartoum, Sudan’s Sovereignty Council said the talks were held with the goal of establishing “fruitful relations with Israel” and strengthening bilateral cooperation in “agricultural, energy, health, water, education fields with special emphasis on security and military fields”.

But it did not say whether a peace agreement would be signed. Sudan is set to become the fourth Muslim Arab nation to sign a normalization agreement with Israel as part of the Abraham Accords, a series of US-brokered normalization deals Israel reached with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco to establish official relations in 2020.

Egypt and Jordan signed peace treaties with Israel in 1979 and 1994 respectively.

In 2020, Sudan agreed to normalize its relations with Israel as part of a deal brokered by the administration of former US President Donald Trump.

An accord with Sudan holds particular symbolic importance as Khartoum was the venue for an Arab League meeting in 1967 where members vowed not to recognize Israel, after the Arab-Israeli war three months earlier.

In the same year, Washington removed Sudan from its list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Google may soon let users use Android phone as USB webcam

0

Tech giant Google is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to use their Android phone as a USB webcam.

Esper’s Mishaal Rahman posted on the decentralized social media platform Mastodon, “using an Android phone as a webcam became really popular during the pandemic, but you’ve typically had to install a third-party app to do so.”

“You may not have to do this in the future, though, as Google is adding support for turning Android devices into USB webcams!”

He further mentioned that “Android is adding a new ‘DeviceAsWebcam’ service” that will turn an android device into a webcam.

“Specifically, this refers to Android devices with kernel support for the standard UVC (USB video class) gadget mode,” he added.

According to Rahman, the Android device’s kernel might need to be compiled with ‘CONFIG_USB_CONFIGFS_F_UVCy’ for the new functionality to work.

Meanwhile, last month, it was reported that the tech giant was working on a new ‘Bluetooth Distance Measurement’ application programming interface (API), which will help users to measure the distance between their smartphones and connected devices.

0

An annual rally and ‘Jalsa’ to mark the foundation day of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) was organized in Jharkhand’s sub-capital Dumka on Thursday. The celebratory event was attended by prominent leaders of the party, which included party president Shibu Soren and Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

Though the rally was scheduled for 9 p.m. thousands of supporters, carrying bows and arrows (also part of JMM’s symbol) and other traditional weapons, started gathering at the venue of the event in the afternoon.

Party president Shibu Soren and Chief Minister Hemant Soren reached Dumka’s Gandhi Maidan by helicopter in the afternoon to attend the rally.

Before the rally, the Chief Minister listened to the problems of hundreds of people and gave necessary instructions to officials.

The JMM was established on February 4, 1973, in Dhanbad, however, the foundation day ceremony was organized for the first time on February 2, 1977, in Dumka. Since then, this is the 44th consecutive year, when the annual ‘Jalsa’ is being organized by the party.

This celebratory event mostly starts at around 9 p.m. and continues till post-midnight, during which the party workers and supporters from various parts of the state assemble in Dumka. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the event was not organized on a massive scale during the last two years – 2021 and 2022.

The event was also seen as a show of strength by the JMM amid the political situation in the state that has arisen due to the recent actions of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the ongoing tussle between the Centre and the JMM-Congress-RJD alliance government.

Sitharaman urges industry to set standards in renewable energy

0

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday urged the industry to set standards when it comes to renewable energy and rare earth.

Addressing the national executive committee meeting of the industry body FICCI, she said that “the industry is at the front for any policy-making. It is only through exchanges such as this that make the policies are responsive. The industry has to come up with the prevailing dynamic picture. The industry will determine how India moves forward on the green hydrogen mission. It need not be that the government should be the prime mover. The government has set a benchmark for how we are growing”.

Industry, she said, should highlight its potential and share it with the government on a regular basis which will facilitate policy intervention by the government.

“I would want the industry to be the prime mover as regards the latest frontiers in renewable energy, rare earth materials, conversion of all these towards usable technologies,” the Finance Minister added.

Speaking on the payments to micro-small and medium enterprises or MSMEs, Sitharaman urged the industry to facilitate payments to the sector within the contract period.

TN lawyers write to Prez Murmyu against collegium recommendation to elevate Victoria Gowri as judge

A group of 21 lawyers from Tamil Nadu has written a petition to President Draupadi Murmu requesting her to reconsider the Supreme Court collegium recommendation of elevating advocate Victoria Gowri as Madras High Court judge.

The advocates which include seniors like R. Vaigai, V. Suresh and NGR Prasad have, in their petition dated January 17, stated that Victoria Gowri in her capacity as a BJP leader had made several hate speeches against minorities. The advocates said that these hate speeches are available on YouTube as also in publications associated with the RSS.

The lawyers also attached a screenshot of Victoria Gowri’s tweeter account where she claimed herself as the ‘National General Secretary of Mahila Morcha’. Advocates, in the petition, said that the screenshot was taken a few days back and that she had recently deleted her Twitter account.

The petitioners said that she had made extreme comments about Love-Jihad and religious conversions and had accused the Roman Catholics of nefarious activities. They also said that she had even said in public that Bharathanatyam should not be played during Christian songs.

In the petition, the advocates said that she was unfit to be made a high court judge due to her regressive views that were purely antithetical to the foundational constitutional values. The advocates also said that her views reflected her deep-rooted religious bigotry.

The advocates also asked whether any minority belonging to the Christian or Muslim community would get justice in her bench if Victoria Gowri was made a judge.

The lawyers also flagged the collegium’s recommendation and said that recommending such a person who harbors strong antipathy towards the minority community was disturbing.

It may be noted that the late Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer had been a minister in the left-front government of Kerala before becoming a judge of the Kerala high court and then Supreme Court.

LG should not stop teachers from going abroad by misusing powers: Sisodia

0

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Thursday said that Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena should not stop Delhi government school teachers from going to Finland on a training program by unconstitutionally misusing the law.

Sisodia said that on the one side there is the government of Punjab which can send its teachers abroad for training but under the same constitution, there is the government of Delhi that wants to send its teachers abroad for training but the LG is stopping them from doing it. This is happening because he is misusing the powers given to him by the unconstitutionally amended GNCTD Act, alleged Sisodia.

“Because of the unconstitutional power given to the LG by the central government of BJP, the Delhi government is not able to send its teachers for training abroad. If the teachers have to be sent abroad for training, then the consent of the LG is not required, but due to the unconstitutional amendments made in GNCTD Act by the Central Government, the LG is stalling everything,” Sisodia told in a Press briefing.

Sisodia further said that to provide excellent education to the children of Punjab, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann had promised the people of Punjab that their children will get a quality education if AAP comes to power in the state. Simultaneously, learning from Delhi’s experience, the Punjab government has started sending teachers on international training in its very first year itself.

“But the file to send Delhi teachers to Finland for training has been in circulation since October. According to the constitution, the governments of all the states of the country have the full right to work on education. The Delhi government should have as much freedom as the government of Punjab or any other state to send its teachers to foreign countries for training. But it is unfortunate that the LG in Delhi is misusing the law to stop teachers from getting global exposure,” Sisodia added.

Telangana Budget session to begin with Governor’s address

After the unprecedented rift between Telangana Governor and BR’s government in the state, the Budget Session of the state legislature is all set to begin on Friday.

Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan will address the joint session of the Assembly and the Council on the first day.

After a gap of two years, she will be addressing the state legislature on the first day of the Budget session.

Last year, the government conducted the Budget session without customary speech by the Governor, triggering a row between the Governor and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).

The ruling party had defended the move on the ground that it was not a new session but a continuation of the earlier session.

This time when the government again tried to go ahead with the Budget session with the Governor’s address, Tamilisai stalled the move by delaying the approval of the Budget sent by the state government.

The Raj Bhavan had sent a communication to the government, enquiring if the arrangements were made for the Governor’s address.

The rift took a new turn early this week with the state government filing a petition in the state High Court, seeking direction from the Governor to approve the Budget.

The bench of Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice N. Tukaramji asked the counsels to amicably resolve the matter and not drag the court into it.

Counsels of both the Raj Bhavan and the government held talks and reached an agreement.

While the government agreed to have a speech by the Governor on the first day of the session, the latter agreed to approve the Budget.

The same evening, Minister for Legislative Affairs Vemula Prashanth Reddy and special chief secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao called on the Governor at the Raj Bhavan, following which she consented to clear the Budget statement.

The next day, Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan issued a notification, summoning the second Telangana Legislative Assembly and Council to meet for its fourth meeting of the Eighth Session at 12.10 p.m. on February 3, Friday.

This will be her first address to the Assembly since 2019.

Amid the latest row, Minister for Industries and Information Technology, K.T. Rama Rao called for abolishing the office of the Governor as it was introduced by the British.

He also alleged that Telangana Raj Bhavan is being used as a political weapon against the state.

IBM, NASA join hands to research impact of climate change with AI

0

Tech major IBM and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center have announced a collaboration to use IBM’s artificial intelligence (AI) technology to discover new insights in NASA’s massive trove of Earth and geospatial science data.

The goal of this joint work is to advance the scientific understanding and response to Earth and climate-related issues like natural disasters and warming temperatures, also the collaborative work will apply the new IBM AI foundation model technology to NASA’s Earth-observing satellite data for the first time.

Foundation models are types of AI models trained on a broad set of unlabeled data, can be used for different tasks, and can apply information about one situation to another.

“Applying foundation models to geospatial, event-sequence, time-series, and other non-language factors within Earth science data could make enormously valuable insights and information suddenly available to a much wider group of researchers, businesses, and citizens. Ultimately, it could facilitate a larger number of people working on some of our most pressing climate issues,” Raghu Ganti, principal researcher at IBM, said in a statement.

Over the last five years, these models have rapidly advanced the field of natural language processing (NLP) technology, and IBM is pioneering applications of foundation models beyond language, said the company.

“Building these foundation models cannot be tackled by small teams,” Rahul Ramachandran, a senior research scientist at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, said in a statement.

“You need teams across different organizations to bring their different perspectives, resources, and skill sets,” he added.

Moreover, IBM and NASA plan to develop several new technologies to extract insights from Earth observations.

The first model will be trained on over 3,00,000 earth science publications in order to thematically organize the literature and make it easier to search for and discover new knowledge.

The second model will be trained using the popular Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS2) satellite dataset from the USGS and NASA, with applications ranging from detecting natural hazards to tracking changes in vegetation and wildlife habitats, the company mentioned.

Further, this agreement’s other potential IBM-NASA collaborative projects include developing a foundation model for weather and climate prediction using MERRA-2, an atmospheric observation dataset.

Pakistani rupee plunges to historic low

0

The Pakistani rupee resumed its downward slide on Thursday after two modest sessions as the “optimism surrounding the government and IMF talks scaled back”, local media reported.

The Pakistani rupee depreciated by Rs 2.52 to settle at Rs 271.35 at the close of the day. However, the local currency touched 272.17 against the dollar during intra-day trade, Geo News reported.

The rupee had closed at Rs 268.83 on Wednesday. Since the start of this year, the rupee has depreciated by 44.92, Geo News reported.

Capital market expert Saad Ali said that reports regarding the rejection of the circular debt management plan (CDMP) presented by the government to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had dented the market’s confidence.

Ali said that these reports created doubts about the possibility of a bottleneck in the ongoing government-IMF talks, Geo News reported.

An IMF mission is currently in Pakistan holding talks on the ninth review that will continue till February 9 after which a staff-level agreement is expected between the two sides.

The IMF has rejected the CDMP presented by the government and asked the authorities to raise the electricity tariff by Rs 12.50 per unit in order to restrict the additional subsidy at Rs 335 billion for the current fiscal year.

During the second day of technical-level talks, the Washington-based lender termed the revised CDMP as “unrealistic”, which is based on certain wrong assumptions. So the government will have to bring more changes in its policy prescription to restrict the losses of the cash-bleeding power sector.

The IMF and the Finance Ministry will work out a gap on the fiscal front after which different additional taxation measures will be finalized through the upcoming mini-budget.

The revised CDMP envisages an increase in the monster of circular debt to the tune of Rs 952 billion for the current fiscal year against an earlier projection of Rs 1,526 billion, Geo News reported.

Azad calls on Shah, takes up land eviction issue in J&K

Ghulam Nabi Azad, Chairman of, the Democratic Azad Party (DAP) met Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi to take up the land eviction issue, said the party on Thursday.

During the meeting, which took place on Wednesday, Azad apprised Shah of the situation of serious ‘unrest and uncertainty’ prevailing among the public following the circular of eviction issued by the UT administration, a statement by the DAP mentioned.

The circular directs all Deputy Commissioners to remove encroachments on state land, including Roshni and Kacharai.

“Ghulam Nabi Azad requested the Home Minister that the majority of occupants holding small lands and have constructed houses for the last few decades are migrants and are mostly victims of militancy, as well as victims of abnormal situations arising from time to time, being a border state.

“The origin of these shelters/residential houses on state-kacharai and Roshni lands appears to have taken place first in 1947 and then in the 1962 and 1971 war period, and subsequently during the post-militancy period. This is also a fact that the governments provided road connectivity, supply of water and electricity, schools, Anganwadi centers, and other welfare schemes, including health-related facilities to these houses from time to time which implicitly indicates that successive state governments in a way have recognized these constructions.”

The statement said Azad requested the home minister that at least poor people having small holdings of land and houses should be spared from the eviction drive.

“The Home Minister assured Azad that small landholders will not be harassed. It is worthwhile to mention here that two weeks earlier Azad had taken up the same issue with Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha also, who too had assured to do the needful with cogent land policy to small landholders sympathetically,” the statement added.

Moreover, the company mentioned that Netflix members like the option to download series and films to watch offline on more devices, particularly as they travel and switch between devices.

Meanwhile, the streaming giant shared its rules and exemptions to explain how it plans to maintain account sharing within a household.

The company has updated its FAQ pages for countries where it is already testing extra membership fees for account sharing — Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru.

By charging extra fees for extended usage of the streaming service outside the household, the company hopes to reduce account sharing this year.
