IND v AUS: Australia opt to bat first as SKY, Bharat, Murphy make Test debut

0

Australia skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bat first against India in the opening Test of the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series here on Thursday.

India handed Test debuts to white-ball specialist Suryakumar Yadav and wicketkeeper KS Bharat for the first Test of the four-match series at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Jamtha here on Thursday.

Former India captain and coach Ravi Shastri handed his India Test cap to Yadav while Cheteshwar Pujara gave it to Bharat at the VCA Stadium in the presence of teammates and the families of both players.

KS Bharat’s selection as a replacement for the injured Rishabh Pant ahead of Ishan Kishan was expected as Kishan is a top-order batsman while India needed to bolster their part of their batting lineup in the absence of Pant.

Suryakumar also adds more meat to the middle order as he has been in great form in the last couple of years and has played Ranji Trophy cricket for more than five-six years.

At 32 years and 148 days, Yadav is the 15th oldest player to make his debut for India.

Australia also handed a maiden cap to off-spinner Todd Murphy and he was given his cap by fellow-spinner Nathan Lyon.

They made two changes to the squad, bringing in Scott Boland for Josh Hazlewood and dropping Travis Head for odd Murphy.

India:

Twitter faces major global outage

0

Micro-blogging platform Twitter faced a major global outage with several users having issues while posting a tweet and sending direct messages (DMs).

According to the outage monitor website DownDetector, over 59 percent of people had reported problems while using the application, 32 percent while using the website, and 9 percent with server connection.

Taking to the platform, many users reported the issues.

While one user said, “did Twitter Dms stop working #TwitterDown”, another mentioned: “Anyone else being blocked from tweeting or retweeting? #TweetLimit #DailyLimit #TwitterDown.”

Users had scheduled their tweets for reporting the issues as they were not likely to post it immediately.

After receiving multiple reports of the outage, the company posted from its @TwitterSupport account on Thursday and said: “Twitter may not be working as expected for some of you. Sorry for the trouble. We’re aware and working on getting this fixed.”

In December last year, Twitter went down for several users globally including in India, and CEO Elon Musk said the outage was due to back-end changes to make the platform faster.

For some users, timelines did not refresh and many accounts were shown as non-existent.

Also, the platform showed error messages to several users, “Something went wrong, but don’t fret — it’s not your fault. Let’s try again”.

Turkey-Syria quake toll now 15,383, race against time to find survivors

0

As rescuers are racing against time to find more survivors in Turkey and Syria amid the harsh freezing temperatures, the death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck the two countries earlier this week has increased to 15,383 as of Thursday, according to authorities.

In its latest update, Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) said the country’s overall death toll currently stood at 12,391 people, with 62,914 others injured, reports Anadolu News Agency.

More than 6,000 buildings collapsed in the aftermath of Monday’s massive 7.8-magnitude quake, while more than 13 million people have been impacted so far in the 10 Turkish regions of Kahramanmaras, Gaziantep, Hatay, Osmaniye, Adiyaman, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Diyarbakir, and Kilis.

In Syria, there were at least 2,992 deaths, of which 1,730 were reported in rebel-held areas in the northwest, according to the “White Helmets” civil defense group, and 1,262 fatalities were registered in government-controlled parts of the country, says the state media, Media reported.

Since the disaster struck on Monday, 70 countries and 14 international organizations have offered Turkey relief, according to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

However, the international aid situation in Syria is less clear as the Country has been heavily sanctioned due to the ongoing civil war.

So far, the UAE, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Egypt, Algeria, and India have sent relief directly to regime-controlled airports, said media.

Others such as the Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, China, Canada, and the Vatican have pledged aid, though it is unclear if that relief will be sent directly to the regime.

The EU has confirmed it will send 3.5 million euros in aid to Syria following a government request for assistance but said the aid must be delivered to both government- and rebel-controlled areas.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Syrian government said it has set up more than a hundred shelters equipped with aid supplies for those affected by the earthquake across government-controlled areas, including in the cities of Aleppo, Hama, Homs, Tartus, and Latakia, a coastal city which has the highest number of earthquake deaths counted in Syria so far, and over 100 collapsed buildings.

Meanwhile, Turkish President Erdogan, who visited the quake-hit areas on Wednesday, has defended his government’s response, saying it was impossible to prepare for the scale of the disaster after critics claimed the emergency services’ response was too slow, Media reported.

Addressing reporters in Hatay, he accepted the government had encountered some problems but said the situation was now “under control”.

Rescuers and volunteers are working round the clock to locate the trapped under rubble as the survival rate without food or water drops drastically after the 72nd hour, which is rapidly approaching, reports a news agency.

Experts have warned that the 72-hour window for rescuing those trapped by the earthquakes may be much smaller than anticipated, given the low temperatures that have swept through the earthquake-hit regions will increase the risk of hypothermia.

The devastating 7.8 tremors struck Turkey’s southern province of Kahramanmaras at 4.17 a.m. on Monday morning, which was followed by a 6.4-magnitude temblor a few minutes later in Gaziantep province.

The epicentre of the 7.8-magnitude quake was 23 km east of Nurdagi in Gaziantep, at a depth of 24.1 km.

At around 1.30 p.m, a third 7.5-magnitude tremor hit Kahramanmaras, which officials said was “not an aftershock”.

After 500 yrs, Lord Ram will adorn the throne at Ayodhya within a year: UP CM

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that after 500 years, Lord Ram would adorn the throne of Ram temple in Ayodhya even as the CPI-M and the Congress do not believe in the existence of Lord Ram or Krishna.

Addressing an election rally at Majlishpur in western Tripura on Wednesday, the Chief Minister added that the Ram temple would be ready within a year and Lord Ram after sitting on his throne would give all of us his blessings.

“The Congress and the CPI-M have believed only in corruption and violence. Tripura was once infamous during the regime of Congress and CPI-M,” Adityanath said, adding that after the BJP-led government came to power (in 2018) in the state, peace and good governance prevailed.

Saying that during the regime of the Congress and CPI-M, the benefit of development and welfare did not reach the people, he claimed that now Tripura has become one of the most developed states in the country.

The double-engine government provided a lot from connectivity to the welfare of the people, the Chief Minister said.

“People voted for the BJP, and the BJP government gave huge developmental gifts to the people. The Tripura government aiming to empower women introduced 33 percent reservation for women in government jobs. Be it Awas Yojana or farmers’ welfare scheme to health scheme, the Modi government has given everything to the common and poor people.”

Adityanath also alleged that Congress and CPI-M are trying to derail the development mission of the double-engine governments and their only aim is to keep the people back to reap political dividends.

The Chief Minister said that corruption was at its peak when Congress ruled the country.

“The country witnessed the Congress’ coal scam, 2G scam, defense equipment procurement scandal, and the Commonwealth Games scam. Corruption became synonymous with Congress,” he added.

Yami prepped for her ‘Lost’ by talking to crime journalists

Yami Gautam Dhar, who is awaiting the release of her upcoming streaming film ‘Lost’, met real-life crime journalists during the course of the film’s shooting in which she essays the role of a crime reporter in the hot pursuit of a story.

The actress told IANS, “I didn’t meet any crime journalists prior to the shooting but yes, I did meet them while we were shooting, and they were very senior. They were very kind.”

“It was a pleasure meeting them because if they hadn’t told me who they were, I would never know their significant body of work. I wouldn’t have known their background. They were extremely warm. They watched us shoot and perform. That’s all about it, there was no particular journalist that I had in mind while preparing for the role”.

The actress also shared why she feels that cinema is one of the most respected professions in the world.

She said, “Cinema has a large influence on people, which is why it is considered one of the most loved and respected professions in the world. It manages to evoke a beautiful bag of emotions within you. It has the capacity to entertain and engage you as an audience and that’s what I call success. I am hoping ‘Lost’ can give the audience that kind of experience.”

‘Lost’ is set to drop on the OTT platform ZEE5 on February 16.

PM tears into Oppn, terms allegations against him as baseless

Launching a stinging counter-attack on the Opposition without referring to the allegations leveled against the government of favoring the Adani group, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday that the weapons of falsehood and lies cannot defeat him, as he is a member of a larger family called the ‘poor of India’.

The Prime Minister also dismissed the allegations leveled against him by the Opposition leaders as baseless.

Replying to the motion of thanks on the President’s address in the Lok Sabha, the Prime Minister said that at a time when a family is busy protecting its own interests (referring to the Gandhi family), he has stood for the rights of the poor.

Playing the development card, Modi tore into the Opposition by saying that those who indulge in abuses will forever wallow in disappointment and frustration.

Amid continued interruption by the Congress and Trinamool Congress legislators during the Prime Minister’s address, Speaker Om Birla said that many members leveled allegations without any proof during the discussion on the motion of thanks, therefore all parties should come together to pass the motion unanimously.

The motion was adopted unanimously in the Lok Sabha.

“The poor people who were only remembered during elections are now getting free ration, uninterrupted electricity, water connection, toilets, gas connection and roofs over their heads, something which was not given to them for all these years,” Modi said.

“The poor will not believe in the cheap allegations leveled against their son Modi,” he said.

He also mentioned how peace is now prevailing in Jammu and Kashmir, which has even given the courage to some people to carry out their ‘Yatra’ (referring to Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra).

In his 90-minute speech, Modi used couplets from Kaka Hathrasi and Dushyant Kumar to take constant jibes at the Opposition.

Due to vote-bank politics, the middle class was long neglected, but the NDA gave this class its due through digital advancement, cheaper home loans, RERA, affordable higher education, and reasonably priced medicines, he said.

Amid chants of “Modi! Modi!” by the treasury bench and counter sloganeering of “Adani! Adani!” by the Opposition members, the Congress members staged a brief walkout during the Prime Minister’s address.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi came to the House almost 40 minutes into Modi’s speech, after which his party members returned to the House.

Modi also launched a full-blown attack on the Congress over the various scams which took place during the tenure of the erstwhile UPA regime.

Prior to the commencement of Modi’s reply, members of the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) staged a walkout from the Lower House.

Launching a vitriolic attack on the Opposition, the Prime Minister said that even as India is emerging as a confident and progressive nation, some people cannot stomach the achievements of its own countrymen.

“Is it just because you lost an election (referring to Gujarat elections)? These people blame EVMs and the Election Commission when they lose elections. They blame Supreme Court when probes are opened against them, they blame the Army and even the RBI, the list is endless,” Modi said.

“These people (referring to the Opposition) feel that just by abusing me they can succeed. Constructive criticism is good for a healthy democracy. However, for the past nine years now, they have only abused me, instead of coming out with constructive criticism,” he said.

He also asked the Opposition to indulge in self-retrospection.

Despite several economic crises engulfing the world, it is a matter of pride that India is now the fifth-largest economy, Modi said.

The Prime Minister said that it is due to India’s rising economic stability, possibilities, and dependability as well as a stable and decisive government that several international economic agencies are now looking at India in a new light.

“We undertook reforms out of conviction, not out of compulsion because we have a stable and decisive government,” Modi said.

However, despite India emerging as a confident nation that dares to dream, some people are drowned in the ocean of dissatisfaction and hopelessness, the Prime Minister said while attacking the Opposition.

One main reason behind the disappointment and frustration of the Opposition was the poor state of the economy between 2004 and 2014 (the UPA regime) and how inflation had risen to double digits during that period, coupled with rampant joblessness, Modi said.

“They cannot stomach the fact that the nation has now progressed after the era of terrorism, unemployment, and joblessness, which was the hallmark of UPA’s tenure,” the Prime Minister said.

The government’s voice on global platforms was so weak during 2004-2014 that nobody was ready to listen to it, Modi added.

“UPA’s main achievements were 2G scam, cash for vote scam and Commonwealth Games scam,” the Prime Minister said amid jeering by the treasury bench.

UPA’s decade was a “lost decade” while 2020’s is “India’s decade”, the Prime Minister said.

In contrast to UPA’s ‘failures’, the Prime Minister highlighted how the government’s efforts towards developing its own vaccine and even distributing it to many nations have been appreciated by several nations on global platforms.

Several unicorns and startups have emerged in the country and today India is among the leading nations in the fields of sports, education, technology, renewable energy, and mobile technology, the Prime Minister said.

He also listed the achievements of the NDA government in developing railways, airports, inland waterways, and highways as well as the peace prevailing in the northeast.

Philippine unemployment rate rose slightly at 4.3% in Dec 2022

The unemployment rate in the Philippines reached 4.3 percent in December 2022, 0.1 percentage point higher than the performance in November but the second lowest since April 2005, new data revealed on Wednesday.

According to the data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the number of unemployed Filipinos rose to 2.22 million in December, reports Xinhua news agency.

Boosted by the full resumption of commercial activities, pent-up demand, and holiday spending, top employment contributors in December include wholesale and retail trade, other service activities, and accommodation and food service activities.

Addressing reporters here, PSA head Dennis Mapa said the unemployment rate has declined to the pre-pandemic levels since July 2022 after jumping to 17.6 percent in April 2020 when the government had imposed lockdowns to curb the spread of Covid-19.

As the economy further reopened, the National Economic and Development Authority said the corresponding expansion in the services and industry sectors resulted in an additional 2.7 million employed persons year-on-year, bringing total employment to 49 million Filipinos.

KJo walks down memory lane, as his ‘student’ gets married

All the ‘students’ of Bollywood filmmaker-producer Karan Johar have found their forever together and KJo can’t be happier. While Varun Dhawan was the first to get married from the ‘Student of the Year’ tribe, followed by Alia Bhatt’s wedding to Ranbir Kapoor last year, now Karan’s third student Sidharth Malhotra too tied the nuptial knot with Kiara Advani.

Karan, who has nurtured their talents with his sense of Hindi cinema and market dynamics, and has been their constant pillar, took to his Instagram recently to pen a heartfelt note for Sid as he shared a picture from the wedding ceremony which shows Sid placing a peck on his wife’s cheek.

“I met him a decade and a half ago. Silent, strong, and still so sensitive. I met her many years after..silent, strong and so sensitive in equal measure,” the note started.

“Then they met each other and I realized at that moment that these two pillars of strength and dignity can make an irreplaceable bond and create the most magical love story together. Watching them is a fairy tale that is rooted in tradition and family,” it continued.

The filmmaker mentioned that he felt a sense of pride and love as he saw the couple who are so much in love with each other.

He concluded the note as he wrote: “As they exchanged vows on a mandap of Mohabbat everyone around them felt the pulse, felt the energy. I sat proud, elated, and bursting with only love for the two of them! I love you, Sid. I love you, Kia. May today be your forever.”

RBI hikes repo rate by 25 bps, projects GDP growth at 6.4% for 2023-24

0

The RBI on Wednesday hiked the repo rate by 25 basis points to 6.5 percent and projected GDP to grow at 6.4 percent in 2023-24.

The central bank Governor Shaktikanta Das announced the decision after the three-day

deliberations of the RBI’s rate-setting panel — the monetary policy committee (MPC), which took a majority decision to hike the key rate.

Meanwhile, in his customary address after the committee’s meeting, Das said that amid volatile global developments, the Indian economy remains resilient.

The monetary policy was confronted by unprecedented contraction of economic activity followed by a surge in global inflation, he said.

The central bank has kept the real GDP growth forecast for 2023-24 at 6.4 percent.

For the first quarter of 2023-24, the growth rate is expected to be at 7.8 percent, for the second quarter at 6.2 percent, the projection for the third quarter is likely to be 6 percent while for the fourth quarter, it could be at 5.8 percent.

For the current fiscal, the RBI has kept the retail inflation projection at 6.5 percent, while for the March quarter, it is projected to be at 5.7 percent. The retail inflation forecast for 2023-24 has been kept at 5.3 percent.

Since May last year, the RBI has increased the short-term lending rate by 250 basis points, including Wednesday’s hike, a move aimed at containing inflation.

Das announced that the central bank will keep its policy stance maintained at “withdrawal of accommodation” because inflation still remains in a sticky zone.

“MPC will remain focused on the withdrawal of accommodation,” he said.

However, with the inflation cloud starting to loft, the RBI revised its growth forecast in the February policy meeting.

The RBI has revised its GDP target for 2023-24 to 6.4 percent with the first quarter expected to see a growth of 7.8 percent.

Meanwhile, commenting on the rupee, the governor said that it has remained one of the least volatile currencies among its Asian peers and continues to be so.

He added that the volatility of the rupee during the current phase of shocks is far lower than seen during the global financial crisis.

Unprecedented events of the last three years have put to test monetary policy across the world, he said while commenting on the overall global economic scenario.

“Emerging market economies are facing sharp tradeoffs between supporting economic activity and controlling inflation while preserving policy credibility. The global economic outlook doesn’t look as grim now as it did a few months ago, growth prospects in major economies have improved while inflation is on a descent though inflation still remains well above the target in major economies”, Das noted.

E-commerce giant eBay to lay off 500 employees

0

E-commerce giant eBay has announced to lay off around 500 workers, about 4 percent of its staff globally, citing the macroeconomic situation.

Jamie Iannone, CEO of eBay, announced the layoffs on Tuesday in a note to staff that was also filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Iannone said that actions taken are designed to strengthen the company’s ability to deliver better end-to-end experiences for its customers and to support more innovation and scale across the platform.

“This shift gives us additional space to invest and create new roles in high-potential areas — new technologies, customer innovations, and key markets — and to continue to adapt and flex with the changing macro, e-commerce, and technology landscape. We’re also simplifying our structure to make decisions more effectively and with more speed,” he said in the note.

He further added that the move will allow eBay to focus on “where we can make the biggest impact”, including expanding the company’s categories of focus.

Meanwhile, video communication app Zoom is also laying off about 1,300 people, or 15 percent of its workforce, its CEO Eric Yuan has announced.

Yuan also said that he is reducing his salary for the coming fiscal year by 98 percent and foregoing his FY23 corporate bonus.

Google to soon blur explicit images in search results by default

0

Tech giant Google has announced that it will blur explicit imagery in the search results by default “in the coming months”.

SafeSearch filtering is already on by default for signed-in users who are under the age of 18, the tech giant said in a blog post on Tuesday.

However, soon, a new setting will blur explicit imagery if it appears in search results even when SafeSearch filtering is not turned on.

“This setting will be the new default for people who don’t already have the SafeSearch filter turned on, with the option to adjust settings at any time,” the company said.

Google also launched its new YouTube Kids playlist ‘Build a Safer Internet’, which will feature content that raises awareness about the safe, responsible, and positive use of technology for families.

“When it comes to kids and families using our platforms, we know keeping them safe is a priority. That’s why we’ve invested in building experiences that align with kids’ and teens’ developmental stages and needs,” it added.

Moreover, for the supported computers, the company is adding the option to use biometric authentication before filling in users’ saved passwords from the ‘Google Password Manager’, for verification.

Soon, iOS users will be able to set up Face ID to protect the privacy of their Google application, making sure that if someone has their device they won’t be able to open it and gain access to their data, the tech giant mentioned.

WhatsApp may soon let users schedule calls within group chats

0

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to schedule calls within their group chats.

Users will be able to select a title, date, and time for their call, making sure that everyone in the group is aware of when it will take place, reports WABetaInfo.

It is useful when the group is organizing an event, by allowing members to schedule a call to discuss the details and confirm that everyone is available.

The ability to schedule a call within the group chats is currently under development and is expected to be released in a future update of the application, the report said.

Meanwhile, last week, it was reported that the messaging platform was working on a new feature that will allow users to create calling shortcuts.

With the new feature, it will be possible to create a calling shortcut by just tapping the contact cell within the list of contacts. This feature will be helpful for users who frequently make calls to the same person and do not want to go through the same process again and again, that is, opening the application and searching for the contact every time.
