PM condoles demise of veteran jurist Shanti Bhushan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday condoled the demise of veteran lawyer and former Law Minister Shanti Bhushan.

“Shri Shanti Bhushan Ji will be remembered for his contribution to the legal field and passion for speaking for the underprivileged. Pained by his passing away. Condolences to his family. Om Shanti,” Modi tweeted.

The 97-year-old veteran jurist passed away on Tuesday after a brief illness. Bhushan was a strong voice against corruption and a defender of civil liberties. A

He was the Law Minister from 1977-1979 in the Morarji Desai Cabinet.

Bhushan famously represented freedom fighter and socialist leader Raj Narain in the landmark electoral malpractice case at the Allahabad High Court, which resulted in the removal of Indira Gandhi as the Prime Minister in 1974.

His son, advocate Prashant Bhushan, is a well-known lawyer.

GST collections touch Rs 1.55 lakh crore in January 2023

Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections for January 2023 stood at Rs 1,55,922 crore, 4 percent higher than Rs 1,49,507 crore collected in December 2022.

January’s collections are second only to Rs 1.68 lakh crore gross GST collections recorded in April 2022.

GST collections have crossed the Rs 1.50 lakh crore mark for the third time in 2022-23, official sources said.

Out of the Rs 1,55,922 crore GST collections for January 2023, CGST was Rs 28,963 crore, SGST was Rs 36,730 crore and IGST stood at Rs 79,599 crore.

The government has settled Rs 38,507 crore towards CGST and Rs 32,624 crore towards SGST from IGST as regular settlement.

The total revenue of the Centre and the states in January 2023 after the regular settlement is Rs 67,470 crore for CGST and Rs 69,354 crore for the SGST.

Revenues in the current financial year up to January 2023 are 24 percent higher than the GST revenues collected up to January 2022.

Govt received Rs 18 lakh crore tax revenue till Dec 2022

The government received Rs 18,25,100 crore till December 2022 consisting of Rs 15,55,692 crore as tax revenue, Rs 2,14,302 crore of non-tax revenue, and Rs 55,106 crore of non-debt capital receipts, according to data released by the Finance Ministry.

According to the monthly review of the government’s accounts till December 2022, non-debt capital receipts consisted of recovery of loans of Rs 16,435 crore and miscellaneous capital receipts of Rs 38,671 crore.

An amount of Rs 6,09,437 crore has been transferred to state governments as devolution of share of taxes by the Centre up to December 2022, which is Rs 1,59,127 crore higher than the previous year.

Total expenditure incurred by the government was Rs 28,18,076 crore, out of which Rs 23,28,132 crore was on the revenue account and Rs 4,89,944 crore on the capital account.

Out of the total revenue expenditure, Rs 6,80,853 crore was on account of interest payments and Rs 3,50,524 crore was towards major subsidies.

Australian tennis legend Margaret Court’s Perth home allegedly got targeted during a burglary on Australian Day.

Two people from Edgewater, aged 33 and 34, have been charged after medals and awards were stolen during the burglary at former world No.1 tennis star and conservative Christian minister’s City Beach home, The Age reported.

A Western Australian Police spokeswoman said that thieves allegedly broke in through the front door and rummaged through the property on Thursday evening.

“Perth detectives have charged two men in relation to an aggravated home burglary. “It will be alleged about 8 pm, two men gained access to the premises via the front entrance door,” she said.

“Once inside, it will be further alleged that the accused rummaged through the victim’s property and stole a number of items including awards, medals, and jewelry,” she added.

According to the police, a number of the items were located in nearby bushland and gardens.

The 80-year-old is considered one of the sport’s all-time greats, having won 24 major singles titles in the Open era. She retired from tennis in 1977 and has a tennis court named after her at Melbourne Park, which hosts the Australian Open.

Multi-lingual star Raashii Khanna has shared how she bagged her part in the Raj and DK show ‘Farzi’ starring Shahid Kapoor and Vijay Sethupati.

Raashii signed ‘Farzi’ before her digital debut release ‘Rudra: The Edge of Darkness’, but also her audition for the Shahid Kapoor-Vijay Sethupati co-starrer show was filmed years ago.

She said: “‘Farzi’ came to me based on an audition I did for Mukesh Chhabra’s casting agency a few years back. It wasn’t particularly for any project, however, it lead me to ‘Farzi’.”

“Apparantly, Raj and DK saw the audition tape and had also seen clippings of my work in a few South Indian films, and visualized Megha in me. I guess destiny works in mysterious ways.”

Raashii also has Dharma Productions’ ‘Yodha’ alongside Sidharth Malhotra in July, in addition to a few projects in the South.

India to host Volleyball Club World Championships from Dec 6

India will be the host nation for the next two years for the Men’s Club World Championship with the Prime Volley Ball League announced by Volleyball World and FIVB on Tuesday.

In the coming tournaments where the competitions over the already best clubs for the  top volleyball nations around the world such as Italy, Iran, Brazil, Iran, and others, As the host nation, Prime Volleyball League winners will be representing India in 2023 and 2024 as the host nation.

Shah Rukh Khan, John Abraham, and Deepika Padukone-starrer ‘Pathaan’ is on a record-breaking run at the domestic and overseas box office as it collected Rs 591 crore gross worldwide in just six days. The film, directed by Siddharth Anand, was released on January 25.

‘Pathaan’, on its sixth day, registered Rs 26.50 crore nett in India (Hindi – Rs 25.50, all dubbed versions – Rs 1.00 crore), taking the India gross to 32 crores.

The overseas gross on day six is at Rs 16 crore. In just six days, ‘Pathaan’ has recorded $27.56 million (Rs 224.6 crore) in overseas territories alone, while net collection in India stands at 307.25 (Hindi – Rs 296.50 crore, dubbed – Rs 10.75 crore).

After a comfortable eight-wicket victory over West Indies in the women’s T20I tri-series, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur was delighted over Jemimah Rodrigues getting some runs as they continue to prepare for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup.

India completed a paltry chase of 95 against West Indies in the 14th over with eight wickets in hand, with Jemimah remaining unbeaten on 42 off 39 balls after opening the batting. Harmanpreet herself was unbeaten on 32 off 23 balls.

“Really happy that Jemi (Jemimah Rodrigues) got some runs. And it’s always good when you are getting runs and I’m happy about my performance. Going forward, we have to work on things that didn’t work, but the batting was good.”

“We bowled well, still we could have done better than this. A target less than 100 was okay but I was looking at less than 80,” she said after the match ended.

Harmanpreet also said the final of the tri-series against hosts South Africa, to be held on Thursday, is a great chance for them to finalize their playing eleven ahead of the T20 World Cup happening from February 10-26.

“Next game is an opportunity for us to try our best XI, whoever is getting the chance, they are performing well. Great positive to have too many options (when Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh come back) and find out the best XI.”

Off-spin all-rounder Deepti Sharma set the base for India’s easy victory, with her fantastic spell of 3/11 in her four overs restricting the West Indies to just 94, earning her Player of the Match award.

“I just bowl according to the conditions. I practiced before the games, to bowl in all phases of the game and they are supporting me. I really don’t feel pressure. I enjoy wherever I get an opportunity, to bat or bowl. Actually, they have faith in me, the captain, and the management.”

West Indies captain Hayley Matthews stated her team will take the positives to come back stronger in the T20 World Cup after missing the cut for a spot in the tri-series final. “Had a couple of Under-19 girls here, that was good. A lot of positives from the game still. We need some time to recover from injuries and hopefully come back better to the World Cup. Look, cricket is a sport where anything can happen. We just have to take the positives.”

Meta has announced that it is testing a new type of closed space — members-only worlds — in its social virtual reality (VR) platform ‘Horizon Worlds’.

The ‘members-only worlds’ will allow creators to build and cultivate a space where a community of people can come together to enjoy a curated experience, the company said in an Oculus blog post on Monday.

During the test, each members-only world can have up to 150 world members and 25 concurrent visitors at any given time.

Creators will be able to provide exclusive access to VIP supporters, create a dedicated space to showcase their world design portfolio to the creator community, gather a gaming group, organize a support group, and much more — all without worrying about uninvited guests.

“Our goal is to put design in the creators’ hands so that they can fully craft the experience they want to offer others,” the company said.

Meta’s vision for the new space is to “empower creators to craft the culture of their communities.”

The company will also provide tools that will allow the creators of the new space to set the rules for their communities and maintain those rules for their closed spaces.

Moreover, creators will have the choice of whether or not to share their moderation responsibilities with other trusted group members and decide if they will allow members to visit the world without a creator or moderator present.

“Everyone will always have the ability to report worlds to Meta and report others for behavior that violates our Code of Conduct for Virtual Experiences,” the company said.
