Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s latest release ‘Pathaan’, which also stars John Abraham and Deepika Padukone, is unstoppable as it has made a whopping Rs 542 crore gross worldwide in just five days since its release on January 25.

‘Pathaan’ hit another Rs 100 crore plus a day in its fifth day, as it registered Rs 60.75 crore nett in India (Hindi – Rs 58.50, all dubbed versions – Rs 2.25 crore), taking India’s gross to 70 crores.

The overseas gross on day five is at Rs 42 crore ($5.13 million), taking the total collection on its fourth day of release to Rs. 112 crore gross. In 5 days, ‘Pathaan’ has recorded $25.42 million (207.2 crores) in overseas territories alone.

‘Pathaan’ also crossed the Rs 250 crore nett mark in India in just five days with Rs 280 crore nett up on the board already. It is the fastest Hindi film to enter the Rs 250 crore club in just five days.

At 2 am while feeding my infant, I received notification: Sacked Google worker

0

Among the 12,000 workers sacked by Google, an employee said he was feeding his newborn at 2 a.m. when he received a notification that he had lost access to his Google corporate accounts and been laid off via email.

Nicholas Dufau, an Associate Product Counsel at Google who spent only six months at the company in Los Angeles, US, wrote in his LinkedIn post, “Last Tuesday morning at 2 a.m., I became a father. On Friday morning at 2 a.m. while feeding my infant, I received a notification that I had lost access to my Google corporate accounts. I had been laid off via automated email”.

“And so last week marked the end of my 6-month stint at Google where I worked on a team packed with intelligent, driven, and kind folks who welcomed me into their Google family,” he added.

Affected by the layoff, Dufau said that the time he lost his job made him feel acutely expendable and naive.

Keeping up the fighting spirit, he concluded his post by saying, “And of course, my saintly wife and miraculous daughter have been here to lift my spirits and give me comfort. They have shown me that whatever difficulties I may be facing, I still have so much more to be thankful for.”

Meanwhile, another Google employee who worked as a recruiter said he got sacked by the company in the middle of an interview.

Dan Lanigan Ryan, a recruiter at Google, who spent 1.3 years at the company in Dublin, Ireland, wrote in his LinkedIn post, “Unfortunately, I was laid off from Google along with many thousands of others last Friday”.

“I did not expect it to come to such an abrupt end, blocked out of the system in the middle of a call,” he added.

S.Korean President’s approval rating slips for 3rd week

0

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol’s approval rating fell for the third straight week in the wake of a spike in heating bills, a poll revealed on Monday.

In the poll of 1,504 adults conducted by Realmeter from January 23-25, the positive assessment of Yoon’s performance dipped 1.7 percentage points from the previous week to 37 percent, reports Yonhap News Agency.

Yoon’s disapproval rating was 59.8 percent, adding 1 percentage point in the same period.

Realmeter said the fall could be attributable to a surge in heating bills.

According to Statistics Korea, local monthly gas rates increased by 34 percent last month from a year ago due to a rise in gas prices. Local media dubbed the spike a “heating bill bomb”.

To curb energy bills for vulnerable households, the presidential office said the government would expand energy vouchers and discount plans.

On the favourability rating of political parties, Yoon’s People Power Party garnered 38.6 percent support, while the main opposition Democratic Party earned 45.4 percent.

Khelo India offers a much-needed platform for young talent: Anju Bobby George

0

Anju Bobby George, the first Indian athlete to make a podium finish in World Championships in athletics when she won the bronze medal in the 2003 showpiece, is upbeat that the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) can eventually bridge the much-needed gap between grassroots program and serious competition in the sport.

The upcoming edition of the Khelo India Youth Games will be held in 27 disciplines across eight cities in Madhya Pradesh, with the opening ceremony scheduled on January 30.

The track & field events of KIYG 2022, a three-day affair, will be held at T.T. Nagar Stadium in Bhopal from February 3-5 and are expected to see some closely-contested events. The other cities which will play hosts in the central India state are Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Mandla, Khargone (Maheshwar), and Balaghat.

Anju, a member of the Union government’s Mission Olympic cell responsible for selecting athletes for the TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme), feels that the Khelo India scheme forms the foundation of a pyramid structure in terms of grooming talent.

“It’s a unique project with the right intent from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Sports ministry, and it has already started producing the results. It’s however a continuous process and we have to build on it,” the 45-year-old long jump ace said in a media release.

“The Games are offering young children up to 18 years a kind of exposure in front of talent-hunters which previously did not exist. The athletes who make the cut are provided with government funding for training and also get an out-of-pocket allowance, which gives them a big sense of pride,” she added.

As per the organizers, each discipline in KIYG is monitored by a group of spotters, who are entrusted with the job of adopting promising participants as Khelo India athletes based on their performance in the KIYG, National Championships, and open selection trials.

The latest figures released by the Union Sports Ministry last December say that 2841 athletes have been selected from 21 sports disciplines so far.

“The promising athletes have a chance to make the next grade for National Centres of Excellence (NCOE) projects of Sports Authority of India and then be in line for the national camp and eventually the TOPS scheme if they show the potential to that level,” said Anju, who was honored with World Athletics ‘Woman of the Year Award’ in 2021 for her contribution in the sport.

In 2016, she opened a training academy for young girls in Bengaluru, which has already helped to produce a world U20 medallist in long jumper Shaili Singh in the 2021 edition.

Asked if her academy is entering any participants in the KIYG, Anju said, “Six of my academy girls have been registered in track & field events in the Games in Madhya Pradesh in the long jump, triple jump, and hurdles. They will get a chance to rub shoulders with some of the Indian athletes, and that’s a big plus by itself.”

The growth in the number of disciplines over the past five editions — from 18 in the first edition in New Delhi to 27 in Madhya Pradesh — shows that the stakeholders of KIYG are ready to expand their horizons.

Hima Das, the fastest woman in the country, had been a part of strong fields in track & field events in earlier editions and was the torchbearer of the Games when it took place in her home state Assam (2019) while Dutee Chand stood out with a 100m gold in the Khelo India University Games in Bengaluru in 2021.

Shooter Mehuli Ghosh and weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga are among the major emerging Indian athletes who first broke through from this platform.

The upcoming edition in Madhya Pradesh will see water sports being included for the first time with canoe slalom, kayaking, canoeing, and rowing — which will be held at the MP Water Sports Academy on Upper Lake in Bhopal.

Hockey World Cup: India beat South Africa 5-2 to finish 9th with Argentina

0

India had entered the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup with high hopes but ended their campaign in the joint-9th position along with Argentina after beating South Africa 5-2 in a classification match at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, here on Saturday.

Before India defeated South Africa, Argentina thrashed Wales 6-0 in their classification match and thus secured 9th place with India. Malaysia and France too won their matches and thus shared the 13th position while Japan and Chile finished 15th.

All eyes in Rourkela were on India’s clash with South Africa and the hosts seemed to feed off the energy of the jam-packed crowd in the Birsa Munda Stadium. And though Graham Reid’s team won the match 5-2, they were not convincing and should have won the match by a bigger margin.

Abhishek opened the scoring for the Men in Blue in the 5th minute, capitalizing on a powerful slap pass by Harmanpreet that found him in space at the top of the circle. He unleashed a vicious shot that streaked past Gowan Jones in the blink of an eye.

India added a second goal towards the end of the first quarter as Harmanpreet Singh dispatched a powerful drag flick between the keeper and the post defender off a penalty corner won by Mandeep Singh.

Hosts India could have scored more goals in this quarter but Harmanpreet failed on a drag flick while Akash deep’s shot was saved by the South African goalkeeper.

South Africa’s best chance of the first half came in the 18th minute as an aerial ball over the Indian defense allowed Keenan Horne to get a shot away from the right, but his shot hit the post and deflected out of bounds. At the other end, Jarmanpreet Singh failed to capitalize on a gilt-edged chance inside the D.

The third quarter produced much more balance as South Africa dominated possession and territory but India looked like a constant threat on the counter.

Abhishek had the best chance early in the half as a great pass by Akashdeep found him with just goalkeeper Jones to beat, but his tentative shot was saved well by the rushing keeper.

At the end of the quarter, another Indian counterattack allowed Abhishek to be the provider and his cross from the right deflected off a South African stick and fell to Shamsher at the far post who tapped the ball in to extend India’s lead.

Akashdeep Singh added a fourth in the final quarter as he deflected a cross by Jarmanpreet at the front post that snuck through the legs of Jones.

South Africa scored a goal right after that, raising hopes of an unlikely comeback, but India added a 5th goal through Sukhjeet Singh to put the game beyond their opponents. Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh and Kishan Pathak too pulled off a couple of good saves to keep the South Africans at bay.

However, the African side was successful just before the hooter when Dayaan Cassiem earned a penalty stroke in the final minute cutting through the entire defense before being brought down by Sreejesh. The stroke was dispatched by Mustapha Cassiem, bringing the final score to 2-5 in favor of the hosts.

India, thus, defeated a team they had overcome easily in the Pro League last year. They, however, would be mighty disappointed with their overall performance in the tournament as they succumbed to pressure and failed to reach the quarterfinal, losing to New Zealand in a sudden-death shoot-out in a Crossover match.

‘Pathaan’ SRK talks about box-office success, tags ‘Tiger’ Salman as ‘GOAT’

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan on Saturday hosted a Twitter session, #AskSRK, where he answered questions related to “Pathaan” and even tagged actor Salman Khan as the “Greatest Of All Time” (GOAT).

The 57-year-old actor treated his fans to a question-and-answer session on social media, where he was asked about the box-office success of ‘Pathaan’, which also stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham.

Asked by a Twitter user about movie collection, SRK said, “Bhai numbers phone ke hote hain hum toh khushi ginte haina #Pathaan.”

Salman Khan had a special appearance in the film, a user wrote: “@iamsrk Sir Pathaan tho hit ho gayi lekin Salman Khan ka muqabla nhi kr paoge box-office pe.”

To which, SRK replied: “Salman bhai is woh kya kehte hain aaj kal young log haan.GOAT. (greatest of all time) #Pathaan.”

A netizen asked about working with Ashutosh Rana and Dimple Kapadia.

Praising them, the ‘Badshah’ of Bollywood wrote, “Ashutosh ji and Dimpleji are very magnanimous actors and lovely and very gentle to work with. And they were Too funny in the hologram scene ha ha #Pathaan.”

A fan couldn’t stop gushing about SRK’s look in ‘Pathaan’ and asked: “Why are you so sexy?”

He replied: “Kya karoon ab aadat si padh gayi hai ha ha. Honestly, it’s only in the beholders’ eye #Pathaan.”

Google introduces AI system that generates music from text descriptions

0

Google has introduced a new AI system called – “MusicLM” that can generate high-fidelity music in any genre given a text description.

However, the company is fearing the risks, and has no immediate plans to release it, reports TechCrunch.

Google isn’t the first to try generative AI for songs, as there have been other attempts, including Riffusion, an AI that composes music by visualizing it, as well as Dance Diffusion, Google’s own AudioML, and OpenAI’s Jukebox.

But due to technical constraints and limited training data, none of them has been able to produce songs that are particularly complex in composition or high fidelity.

MusicLM is perhaps the first that can, said the report.

MusicLM was trained on a dataset of 2,80,000 hours of music to learn to generate coherent songs for descriptions of “significant complexity” (eg., “enchanting jazz song with a memorable saxophone solo and a solo singer” or “Berlin ’90s techno with a low bass and strong kick”), as described in an academic paper by US-based Cornell University.

Meanwhile, Google announced that users can now lock their incognito session when they leave Chrome on Android.

“You can require biometric authentication when you resume an Incognito session that was interrupted,” the tech giant said in a blog post.

Earlier, this feature was available on iOS devices, but now it is rolling out to Android users too.

Hockey World Cup: Malaysia beat Japan, France overcome Chile in playoff matches

0

Malaysia prevailed over Japan 3-2 in a contest between two Asian teams and France defeated Chile 4-2 in playoff matches for the 13th to 16th places in the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, here on Saturday.

Malaysia started the day’s proceedings when they took on Asian Games gold medallist Japan in a closely-fought contest, capitalizing on a brace of goals by Shello Silverius. The two teams were tied 1-1 at half-time after Japan’s Kaito Tanaka neutralized Silverius’ opening goal off a penalty corner in the 7th minute.

Malaysia scored twice in the third quarter while Japan could manage only one, thus falling narrowly short in their pursuit of winning the match and finishing 14th.

Silverius again gave Malaysia the lead in the 31st minute but Japan leveled the score again within seconds to make it 2-2 when Seren Tanaka scored a field goal.

But two minutes later, Suhaimi Shahmie scored another goal to make it 3-2 for Malaysia. And that’s how the score stayed in the end. Japan created a lot of pressure towards the end of the third quarter but was thwarted by the Malaysian defense. They earned five penalty corners in this period but could not convert any of them.

Malaysia also received two cards — green for Rosli Ramadan in the 52nd minute and a yellow card for Najmi Jazian in the 58th but Japan could not capitalize on the man advantage.

In the second match of the day, France got the better of Chile 4-2 with their top-scorer Victor Charlet scoring a brace of goals via penalty corners.

France took the early lead when Eliot Curty scored a field goal in the 13th minute. Carlet then scored twice within a minute, converting two penalty corners to make it 3-0 for France in the 17th minute. Though Franco Becerra scored off Chile’s first penalty corner of the match in the 20th minute, France led 3-1 at half-time. Xavier Gaspard made it 4-2 in the 4th minute as the French defended stoutly to win the match.

France capitalized on their chances while Chile failed to apply enough pressure. The South Americans were also troubled by disciplinary cards. They got two green and one yellow card in the second half of the match. France bagged four penalty corners of which they capitalized on two.

Udupi Shocker: FIR filed against two for beating dog to death in college premises

0

Karnataka Police have registered an FIR against two persons on charges of brutally killing a dog in Udupi district, the police said on Saturday.

The police said that the incident took place on the premises of Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology & Management in Bantakal, near Udupi.

The accused have been identified as warden Nagaraj and Rajesh. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused allegedly committed the brutal act after they found a student playing with the dog on the college premises.

She urged that justice should be done to the dog by initiating action against the culprits.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, prompting animal lovers to sharply condemn the incident.

Manjula Karkera, an animal lover, lodged a police complaint at the Shirva police station in this regard.

The police have registered a case under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Nandamuri Taaraka Ratna still critical; Telugu superstar Balakrishna pays a visit

The health condition of Jr NTR’s cousin Nandamuri Taaraka Ratna, who was hospitalized after suffering a cardiac arrest, is still critical, the health bulletin from Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bengaluru released on Saturday stated.

Taaraka Ratna is a member of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

The hospital bulletin reads: “He is currently under the care of a multi-disciplinary clinical team including cardiologists, intensivists, and other specialists. He remains in a critical state of maximum support. He will continue to be under rigorous evaluation and treatment in the coming days.

“Nandamuri Taaraka Ratna suffered cardiac arrest in Kuppam on January 27 and was shifted to a hospital in Kuppam with resuscitation for 45 minutes and primary treatment.

“Doctors there advised to move him to a tertiary center. Due to his critical condition, we were requested to transfer him to Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences (Narayana Hrudayalaya), Bengaluru when a team of doctors from NH traveled to Kuppam to evaluate his condition,” the health bulletin noted.

Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital also said that Taaraka Ratna was found to have an anterior wall myocardial infarction with balloon angioplasty, on an intra-aortic balloon pump and vasoactive support.

“He was shifted to Narayana Hrudalaya via road at 1 a.m. on January 28. His condition was highly critical due to cardiogenic shock after the myocardial infarction, and evaluation of his condition will continue with treatment under standard guidelines and protocols,” the health bulletin read.

Meanwhile, Telugu superstar Nandamuri Balakrishna has visited Taaraka Ratna at the hospital.

Police said that they have beefed up the security in the surrounding areas of the hospital as TDP chief and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is expected to visit the hospital.

Premium segment at highest spot, 5G phones at 32% market share in India

0

The premium segment (Rs 30,000 and above) contributed 11 percent to India’s smartphone shipments and 35 percent to overall market revenue in 2022, the highest ever.

Samsung led the market in 2022 in terms of shipment value share with a 22 percent share, followed by Apple, in the country, according to Counterpoint Research.

However, in terms of shipment volume, Xiaomi led the market in 2022 with a 20 percent share, closely followed by Samsung.

Xiaomi slipped to third position in Q4 2022 with Samsung and vivo capturing first and second spots respectively.

5G smartphones captured a 32 percent share in 2022. Samsung became the top-selling 5G brand in 2022 with a 21 percent share.

Apple continued to lead the premium smartphone segment, with the iPhone 13 emerging as the top-selling model. Apple also led the market in Q4 2022 in terms of shipment value.

“Consumer demand started declining from the second quarter when the global economy was crippled by multiple macroeconomic issues like all-time high inflation, rising unemployment, and geopolitical conflicts, affecting India’s economy as well,” said senior research analyst Prachir Singh.

Inventory build-up across channels after the second quarter led to lower-than-expected shipments throughout the second half of the year.

“We believe that the inventory and demand situation will continue to affect the market in the first half of 2023 before improving in the latter half driven by the festive season and upgrades to 5G devices,” Singh added.

India’s smartphone shipments declined 9 percent YoY to reach over 152 million units in 2022, according to the report.

The decline, which is the second ever in India’s smartphone market, can be attributed to the decline in entry-level and budget segments which faced supply constraints at the beginning of the year and then witnessed lower demand throughout the year.

“While entry-tier and budget segments were most affected, the premium segment remained immune and showed double-digit growth. OEMs’ increased focus, consumers upgrading for premium features, and, most importantly, availability of various financing schemes,” said research analyst Shilpi Jain.

Overall, India’s smartphone market revenue remained flat despite a 9 percent YoY decline in shipments.

OnePlus grew 50 percent YoY in 2022 driven by the OnePlus Nord CE 2 series.

It focused on diversifying and expanding its product portfolio across different price points and increasing its offline presence to drive sales, the report mentioned.

Kangana warns Bollywood to stay away from politics amid ‘Pathaan’ success

On Saturday morning, actress-filmmaker Kangana Ranaut warned Bollywood and asked them to ‘enjoy their success’ and ‘stay away from politics’ amid the roaring success of Shah Rukh Khan’s latest release ‘Pathaan’.

Kangana wrote: “Bollywood walon yeh narrative banane ki koshish mat karna ki iss desh mein tum Hindu hate se suffer kar rahe ho, agar main phir se yeh word suna ‘triumph over hate’ toh tum logon ki wahi class lagegi jo kal lagi thi. Enjoy your success and do good work, stay away from politics.”

However, the ‘Dhaakad’ actress’ tweet did not go down well with many users.

“Enjoy your success and do good work. Stay away from politics. Wonder who needs to hear that most,” a netizen commented.

One said: “Aap Bollywood se nahi ho? Aap Hollywood se ho? Aap kyun aisi baatein karti ho?”

“Chalo #Pathaan ko side mein karte hai.. another example of ‘triumph over hate’ is how your last 9 movies tanked one after another. The audience has rejected @KanganaTeam we know you are desperate now to be where Smriti Irani is,” wrote another.

“Stay away from politics? look who’s talking,” said a user. Kangana had earlier said that the film shows ‘enemy’ Pakistan in good light.

Mitchell Santner one of the best spinners in white-ball cricket: Daryl Mitchell

0

New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell lauded captain Mitchell Santner for his economical 2/11 in the first T20I against India at JSCA International Stadium, saying the left-arm spinner is one of the best tweakers in white-ball cricket at the moment.

In his four overs, Santner, the New Zealand captain, bowled a mesmerizing spell of 2/11 in four overs, including 18 dot balls and bowling a maiden to an in-form Suryakumar Yadav in the final over of power-play.

He got a lot of grips and turned the ball square while being accurate to take out Shubman Gill and Deepak Hooda on a Ranchi pitch which heavily favored spinners as New Zealand got their first win of the tour through a 21-run victory and took a 1-0 lead in the three-game series.

“He’s one of the best spinners in world cricket with the white ball at the moment. He keeps proving his class. That was a very special spell by him and put us in a good position to win. He’s done it a long time for New Zealand now – very lucky to have him,” he said in the post-match press conference.

Pushed into batting first, New Zealand reached 176/6, thanks to half-centuries from opener Devon Conway striking 52 from 35 balls, and Mitchell smashing 59 not out off 30 balls, including 27 off the final over. They were also supported by opener Finn Allen’s quickfire 35 from 23 balls.

“I thought the partnerships that Finn and Dev did early and obviously Glenn (Phillips) and Dev as well allowed us to take the innings deeper and allowed us to put some pressure on India towards the end of the innings. It was about constantly adapting, trying to find ways to put pressure back on their bowlers,” he added.

Mitchell signed off by admitting that touching nearly 180 through him hitting three sixes and a four in the final over off a wayward Arshdeep Singh gave some hope of defending the total to the visitors.

“It was definitely challenging at times through the middle, especially with the spinners – I guess that gave us confidence going into it with the ball that with 180-ish on the board. If we could bowl really well and build some pressure and hopefully the dew doesn’t come down then we knew we’d be in that ballpark.”

Women’s T20I Tri-series: Victories against India will be ‘major boost’ for South Africa, says Marizanne Kapp

0

Experienced South Africa all-rounder Marizanne Kapp believes victories in upcoming matches against India in the ongoing Women’s T20I Tri-Series in East London will be a ‘major boost’ for her team ahead of next month’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023.

South Africa will wrap up the round-robin phase of the Tri-Series with the match against India set to happen late on Saturday night, serving as a precursor to the final of the three-team event scheduled to happen between the two teams on February 2.

“I think it’ll be very important for us as a team. We’ve tried a few combinations, and looked at a few players and we know this is not the easiest of wickets. So, if we can beat a team like India on these wickets, it’ll be a massive boost for us as a team. You want that bit of momentum when you go into a T20 World Cup,” said Marizanne ahead of the match.

In the first game of the Tri-Series, South Africa went down to India by 27 runs before emphatically bouncing back to overpower the West Indies in their subsequent matches, winning by 44 runs and 10 wickets respectively.

Despite achieving success against the West Indies, Marizanne, 33, remains wary of the challenges posed by India, especially by their spin attack led by off-spin all-rounder Deepti Sharma.

“In these conditions, you have to be positive. In the first few games, we probably battered ourselves a bit because of these conditions that don’t really suit us. It was and has been tough out there, I’m not going to lie.”

“Usually, I’m someone that prefers spin and I quite enjoy facing spin, but it’s really been a challenge on these wickets. So, if we can go out there and just be positive and clear with our plans, it should do us good.”

On an individual front, Marizanne has been taking responsibility with both bat and ball after being asked to slot in at three in the batting order while continuing to open the bowling for South Africa.

With the bat, she produced a score of 22 against India before recording her second T20I half-century with a crucial 52 in the first outing against the West Indies. Although she has only bagged one wicket with her right-arm medium deliveries, (1/30 against India), Marizanne has continued to set the tone up front for the South African seam attack.

“It’s been a good challenge for me. For the past two years, I’ve really enjoyed batting again, whether it’s ODI cricket or T20 cricket. I back myself again, it’s not always been easy on these wickets, but I know we are not always going to play on wickets like these and then I can express myself a bit better.”

“It’s been a good challenge. It’s sometimes tough, especially with the heat out here in East London, and it’s a ground where you have to run most of your runs. It’s been a challenge, but it’s been a good challenge and I feel like as a senior player, I can bring a lot of stability in that number three role for my team,” she concluded.

UK mulls allowing foreign students to work for longer hours

0

International students, including Indians, in the UK, are likely to be allowed to work for longer hours and take up more part time jobs to plug labor shortages in various sectors across the country, according to a report.

Presently, foreign students in the UK, who number around 6,80,000, are allowed to work for a maximum of 20 hours a week during term time.

However, discussions have begun within the government to raise this cap to 30 hours or remove it entirely in a bid to boost its economy, The Times reported.

International students made up 476,000 of the 1.1 million migrants who arrived in the country last year.

Of these, India became the largest source of students with 161,000 students, including 33,240 dependents, coming to the UK last year.

There are 1.3 million empty posts, almost half a million more than before the pandemic, and according to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, “businesses are crying out for workers”.

Government sources told The Times that lifting the cap on foreign students’ hours was “part of a swathe of ideas being considered”, adding that the idea is at a nascent stage.

But what could put a spanner in the works is Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s plans to reduce the number of foreign students coming to the country.

With the net migration numbers rising to an estimated record of 504,000 last year, Braverman has drawn up proposals to reduce the number, which includes shortening the duration foreign students can stay in Britain post their course.

Curbs are also being considered on the number of dependents allowed into the UK and restricting foreign students from attending “low-quality” courses.

However, according to the Department of Education, the restrictions will bankrupt UK universities, which depend on foreign students for money.

According to UK-based New Way Consultancy, foreign students and their dependents contributed to the UK economy not just through fees of 10,000 pounds to 26,000 pounds but also via an NHS surcharge of 400 pounds a year for the student and 600 pounds for a dependent.

It warned that curbs on graduate work visas will force Indian students to shift to countries like Australia and Canada, ultimately leading to the end of the student market in the UK.

NASA’s mega Moon rocket now ready for crewed mission

0

NASA’s mega moon rocket has cleared all performance tests and engineers are now taking a closer look at the Space Launch System (SLS) performance to prepare for the first crewed Artemis missions.

NASA continues to evaluate data and learn more about the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket’s debut performance during the agency’s Artemis I launch on November 16 this year.

“NASA’s Space Launch System rocket has laid the foundation for the Artemis Generation and the future of spaceflight in deep space,” said John Honeycutt, SLS Programme manager.

“There is an engineering and an art to successfully building and launching a rocket, and the analysis on the SLS rocket’s inaugural flight puts NASA and its partners in a good position to power missions for Artemis II and beyond,” he said.

The preliminary post-flight data indicated that all SLS systems performed exceptionally and that the designs are ready to support a crewed flight on Artemis II.

The core stage of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket has more than 1,000 sensors and 45 miles of cabling.

The Artemis I flight test was the only way to gather real data on how the rocket performed during events like booster separation.

“The data we got back from Artemis I is critical in building confidence in this rocket to send humanity back to the Moon,” said John Blevins, SLS chief engineer.

The SLS team will use what we learn from this flight test to improve future flights of the rocket, and we are already taking what we’ve learned about operations and assembly and applying it to streamline future missions, he added.

Cameras and sensors also allowed teams to monitor how the rocket performed during its in-space maneuvers.

Engineers also monitored the extreme temperatures and sound the rocket experienced just after liftoff.

Through a-Artemis, NASA will land the first woman and the first person of color on the surface of the Moon, paving the way for a long-term lunar presence and serving as a stepping stone for astronauts on the way to Mars.
