Anti-LGBTQ slurs increase on Twitter after Musk’s takeover: Report

0

Anti-LGBTQ slurs have increased on Twitter since Elon Musk took over as CEO, despite his claims and actions to the contrary, including disbanding Twitter’s Trust and Safety Council, a new report has shown.

According to Media Matters for America and GLAAD, the retweets of tweets by right-wing figures include the anti-LGBTQ “groomer” slur, as tweets containing the slur mention right-wing figures.

The researchers looked at nine popular right-wing accounts which include Tim Pool, Jack Posobiec, Jake Shield, Gays Against Groomers, Blaire White, Allie Beth Stuckey, Andy Ngo, Seth Dillon, and Mike Cernovich to chart their use of the anti-LGBTQ slur “groomer”.

Overall, these accounts saw a 1,200 percent uptick in tweets or retweets that used the slur, an increase of 3,600 instances to 48,000.

Libs of TikTok, another right-wing account, experienced a 600 percent increase in mentions, ranging from nearly 2,000 to nearly 14,000, while Rep. Mayra Flores (R-TX) saw a nearly 6,000 percent increase, from nearly 70 mentions to over 4,000, according to the report.

Moreover, a prominent LGBTQ account that appears in tweets with the “groomer” slur has seen a 225,000 percent increase in mentions after Musk acquired the platform, the report added.

Musk officially acquired Twitter on October 27 and reassured advertisers and civil rights leaders that the social media platform wouldn’t become a “free-for-all hellscape” and would “continue to combat hate & harassment”.

While Musk provided these assurances, he quickly reinstated previously banned accounts, including those of high-profile right-wing users like former President Donald Trump.

Furthermore, Musk has also reinstated two accounts that violated the platform’s hateful content rules, including those belonging to anti-LGBTQ figure “James Lindsay” and right-wing satire site “Babylon Bee”, said the report.

Earlier this month, a new report claimed that hate speech soared on Twitter after Musk took over.

According to research by the Center for Countering Digital Hate, an average of 1,282 tweets with slurs against Black people appeared daily on Twitter before Musk took over and that number jumped to 3,876 after he acquired the company.

Number of cyber attacks steadily rising, 12.67 lakh during Nov 2022

0

The number of cyber attacks in India has recorded a steady growth over the past few years, and the total number as reported to and tracked by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) in the current year stands at 12,67,564 (till November), the Parliament was told on Wednesday.

The corresponding number of such incidents in 2018 was 2,08,456 which increased to 3,94,499 in 2019, 11,58,208 in 2020, and 14,02,809 in 2021, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

He said that with the borderless cyberspace coupled with anonymity, along with rapid growth of the Internet, the rise in cyber attacks and cyber security incidents is a global phenomenon and the government is fully cognisant and aware of various cyber security threats. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) is mandated to track and monitor cyber security incidents in India. In the recently notified cyber security direction, CERT-In has now made it mandatory for all incidents to be mandatorily reported to it.

The minister said that CERT-In operates an automated cyber threat exchange platform for proactively collecting, analyzing, and sharing tailored alerts with organizations across sectors for proactive threat mitigation actions by them. According to the analysis by CERT-In, the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses of the computers from where the attacks appear to have originated from a number of countries.

The reply further said that government has published National Cyber Security Policy 2013 with the vision of building a secure and resilient cyberspace for citizens, businesses, and government, and the mission of protecting information and information infrastructure in cyberspace, building capabilities to prevent and respond to cyber threats, reducing vulnerabilities and minimizing damage from cyber incidents, through a combination of institutional structures, people, processes, technology, and cooperation.

Further, the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued National Information Security Policy and Guidelines to the Central Ministries as well as state governments and Union Territories with the aim of preventing information security breaches and cyber intrusions in the information and communication technology infrastructure.

WhatsApp Pay India head Vinay Choletti quits after 4 months

0

Vinay Choletti, Head of WhatsApp Pay in India, has quit within four months in the job, as the digital payments industry soars in the country.

Choletti replaced Manesh Mahatme, who joined WhatsApp from Amazon, in September this year.

“As I move on to my next adventure, I strongly believe that WhatsApp has the power to phenomenally transform digital payments and financial inclusion in India and I look forward to seeing it leverage its potential in the coming years,” Choletti wrote in a LinkedIn post.

“I am humbled to see the customer adoption of novel use cases using WhatsApp Pay and I will wear these badges proudly for the rest of my life,” he added.

Late last year, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) approved increasing the user cap for WhatsApp’s payment service from the current 20 million to 40 million users.

WhatsApp received the nod from NPCI in April this year to expand the payment service to 100 million users.

Mahatme worked at WhatsApp Payment for nearly 18 months and according to Meta, he has played an important role in expanding access to ‘payments on WhatsApp in India.

Mahatma joined as Director and Head of WhatsApp Pay in April last year.

Shah Rukh-Deepika starrer ‘Pathaan’ runs into trouble in MP over saffron costume

Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone’s upcoming Bollywood flick ‘Pathaan’ may face problems in Madhya Pradesh as both the ruling and the opposition have objected to the saffron costume worn by the actor in the film.

Responding to the film promos, State Home Minister Narottam Mishra on Wednesday termed the costumes and scenes in the film “obscene and condemnable”. It should be corrected, or the state government will be forced to take a decision on the screening of the film.

The objection has been raised over Deepika Padukone’s saffron costume in a song titled ‘besharam rang’. Released on Tuesday, the song is trending on social media.

Reacting to the controversy, state home minister Narottam Mishra said, “Actress Deepika Padukone’s costume is highly objectionable and the song has been shot with a dirty mindset. The scenes and costumes of the songs should be changed, or we will have to take a decision on ist screening in Madhya Pradesh,” Mishra said while accusing the actress of supporting the ‘Tukde Tukde’ gang.

Notably, leader of the opposition in Madhya Pradesh Assembly Govind Singh has also expressed his anger about the costumes in the song. “The scenes of the song and costumes are highly objectionable. Such things are not acceptable in Indian culture,” Singh said while talking to the reporters on Wednesday.

The right-wing Sanskriti Bachao Manch also joined the bandwagon and staged a protest against the film calling “saffron a shameless color with obscenity.” The members of Sanskriti Bachao Manch protested against Deepika Padukone’s dress, as she was seen wearing saffron-colored clothes.

Chandrashekhar Tiwari said, “This is an insult to our saffron dress, which Sanskruti Bachao Manch will not tolerate. Shahrukh Khan, when Hindus started boycotting your film, you remembered Vaishno devi. You will have to apologize to all Hindus and remove the song from this film because the people of India have made you a superstar. Shahrukh Khan, why are you always degrading your image by doing such acts? You should apologize to all Sanatan Dharma believers.”

Samsung transfers some patents in US to Huawei under cross-licensing deal

0

Samsung has transferred some of its patents in the US to Huawei under a cross-licensing deal, the media reported.

According to SamMobile, Samsung transferred 98 patents it has in the US to Huawei. The South Korean firm transferred 81 patents to the Chinese firm in 2019.

The company has now transferred 179 patents in total. This is part of the cross-licensing agreement the companies signed a few years ago to settle their patent dispute, according to the report.

The patents transferred from Samsung to Huawei cover telecommunications, charging, smartphone cameras, and display technologies.

The Huawei-Samsung patent dispute began with telecommunications-related technologies, in which Huawei held more patents, said the report.

Last month, South Korean and Chinese companies secured metaverse hardware patents, with LG and Huawei rising in the ranks with the most Metaverse patents as the electronics industry looks beyond smartphones.

Since 2016, LG Electronics has filed the most metaverse patent applications, moving up from 11th place from 2010 to 2015, reports Nikkei Asia.

Samsung Electronics held its position in second. Huawei placed fourth in the ranking with numerous patents related to image and display processing.

Huawei has been attempting to increase revenue through patent licensing agreements.

It has entered into a patent cross-licensing agreement with OPPO and 19 other companies, including Samsung.

Like father, like son: Arjun Tendulkar slams ton on debut in Ranji Trophy

0

Arjun Tendulkar emulated his legendary father Sachin Tendulkar by slamming a century on his Ranji Trophy debut when he scored a hundred for Goa against Rajasthan in a Group C encounter here on Wednesday.

Coming into bat at the fall of the fifth wicket, the 23-year-old Arjun completed his century on the second day of the match against Rajasthan being played at the Goa Cricket Association Academy ground here.

He emulated his illustrious father, Sachin Tendulkar scored 100 not out on his Ranji Trophy debut for Bombay, now renamed Mumbai, against Gujarat at Wankhede on December 11, 1988. He became the youngest Indian to score a century on debut in first-class cricket aged 15 years and 232 days.

Arjun Tendulkar, who was batting on four at stumps on the first day of the match on Tuesday, reached the three-figure mark with a well-controlled knock and was eventually out for 120, caught by Kamlesh Nagarkoti off his own bowling. He faced 207 deliveries during his knock and struck 16 fours and two sixes.

He shared a partnership of 221 runs for the sixth wicket with Suyash Prabhudessai (batting on 187) at the time of reporting. In the 221-run partnership off 374 balls, Tendulkar contributed 120 runs while Prabhudessai contributed 99. Goa was 422/6 in the 144th over when Arjun Tendulkar was out.

Arjun Tendulkar had earlier this year switched affiliation to Goa after representing Mumbai in age-group cricket.

YouTube’s new feature will warn users against their abusive comments

0

YouTube has introduced a new feature that will warn users if their comments are found to be abusive. The company says it will send a notification to people whose abusive comments have been removed for violating the platform’s rules.

Moreover, if a user continues to leave multiple abusive comments, they may receive a timeout and be temporarily unable to comment for up to 24 hours.

The testing has shown that these warnings/timeouts reduce the likelihood of users leaving violative comments again, as per the company’s forum post.

“Our goal is to both protect creators from users trying to negatively impact the community via comments, as well as offer more transparency to users who may have had comments removed to policy violations and hopefully help them understand our Community Guidelines,” the company said.

Currently, the abusive comment detection feature is only available for English comments, but the streaming platform aims to include more languages in the future.

The company says that it has been working on improving its automated detection systems and machine learning models to identify and remove spam.

It has removed over 1.1 billion spam comments in the first six months of 2022, the company claimed.

Since reducing spam and abuse in comments and live chat is an ongoing task, the company said that these updates will be ongoing as they continue to adapt to new trends.

IND v BAN, 1st Test: India win toss, elect to bat first; include three spinners with two pacers

0

India’s stand-in captain K.L. Rahul has won the toss and elected to bat first in the Test series opener against Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium here on Wednesday.

After winning the toss for the first time on this tour, Rahul said India is playing three spinners — Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav — along with two fast bowlers in Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj.

“Looks like a good wicket and we’ll put the runs on the board and use the footmarks later on to get wickets. They’ve been a few injuries but that gives an opportunity to the other guys,” he said.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan stated if he had won the toss, he would also have opted to bat first. “But we’ll try to get some early wickets. If you got into the history (of this ground), more wickets have fallen on an opening day (than on the final). We will try to get early wickets and put them under pressure,” he said.

“It’s a little difficult (to adapt from white-ball cricket), we’re playing a Test after a big gap of five months but we’ve prepared well. This is an important series hopefully we can put some WTC points,” he added.

For Bangladesh, top-order batter Zakir Hasan, who made a heroic 173 to force a draw against India A in a four-day match at Cox’s Bazar, is making his Test debut, making him the 101st cricketer in this format from his country.

While India will be opening with Rahul and Shubman Gill, Bangladesh has dropped Mahmudul Hasan Joy to have their opening pair in Zakir and Najmul Hossain Shanto.

India is playing Tests after five months, while Bangladesh is featuring in the format after nearly six months. India needs to win their remaining six Tests (or even five victories with a draw) – two in Bangladesh and four against Australia at home in February-March next year – to be in contention for the World Test Championship final to be played at The Oval in June 2023.

Alvarez’s brace, Messi’s goal guides Argentina into final with 3-0 win over Croatia

0

Lionel Messi kept his World Cup dream on track as he scored one and set up another as Argentina romped home into the final of the FIFA World Cup with an emphatic 3-0 win over 2018 finalists Croatia at Lusail Stadium on Tuesday night.

At the end of half time, La Albiceleste led 2-0 as Messi converted a spot kick in the 34th minute to give them the lead and Julian Alvarez struck with a sublime solo effort to give the South American side a comfortable 2-0 lead going into the half time break.

Argentina kept the scoring tempo to add a third one in the 69th minute with Alvarez netting his second of the match.

The Argentina captain, who will be playing his second World Cup final on Sunday, having finished as runner-up in 2014 final to Germany, will be keen to hold aloft the trophy on December 18 at the Lusail Stadium.

The 35-year-old and his teammates will await the winner of Wednesday’s second semi-final between defending champions France and rank outsiders Morocco to see whom they will take on in the title clash.

The PSG striker’s fifth goal in Qatar took him to 11 World Cups overtaking Gabriel Batistuta in the process and making him the all-time top scorer for Argentina.

France’s Kylian Mbappe has scored five goals and both of them will be in the race for the Golden Boot award.

Batistuta only needed 12 games to reach his tally, while Messi was making his 25th World Cup appearance on Tuesday – that saw him equal Lothar Matthaus’ all-time record of 25 at the tournament.

Nevertheless, Messi’s strike highlights the Argentina star’s remarkable longevity, playing his fifth World Cup. His first World Cup goal came in 2006 against Serbia and Montenegro. At 18 years and 357 days, it made him Argentina’s youngest-ever scorer in the competition.

Coach Lionel Scaloni made two changes to the team that featured from the off against the Netherlands.

With Marcos Acuna suspended, Nicolas Tagliafico was selected as left-back, while Leandro Paredes came into the midfield with defender Lisandro Martinez dropping out.

Zlatko Dalic, meanwhile, stuck with the side that started against Brazil on Friday. Luka Modric became only the fourth player aged 37 or over to start six matches at a World Cup, after Brazil’s Nilton Santos in 1962, Italy’s Dino Zoff in 1982, and England’s Peter Shilton in 1990.

Croatia was fully in control in the opening 25 minutes or so with Argentina not being able to make any telling breakthroughs, but once Argentina was awarded their penalty they did not look back as the momentum shifted quickly.

Croatia dominated the ball, controlling more than 60 percent of possession. Still, they managed to do precious little with it, failing to register a single shot on target. Argentina was ready to sit back and battle as Croatia advanced up the field.

Messi scored the opening goal of the game against Croatia 11 minutes before half-time, blasting into the top-right corner from the penalty spot after Alvarez was fouled by Dominik Livakovic.

After Ivan Perisic failed to catch Emiliano Martinez off the line at the other end, the counter was sprung and Alvarez was soon one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The goalie had no choice but to bring down the striker after he tried to find the back of the net, 1-0.

Alvarez’s first goal of the evening had shades of Diego Madonna’s greatest goal of the 1986 World Cup against England where he waved past a host of defenders from his own half to score one of the best individual goals of the Word Cup.

The young striker scores a goal of some quality as a failed Croatia corner leads to an Argentinian break. The break soon finds Alvarez, who picks up the ball just past the halfway line and sets off on a run with a couple of Croatian defenders on him. As he gets closer to the box, he is almost dispossessed not once, but twice, before he pokes the ball past Livakovic to send the Argentina fans into delirium, 2-0.

In the second half, Argentina continued to hold the fort down on their end, despite numerous Croatia advances. However, if there is any space afforded then Argentina was quick to act, and added to their advantage with a third goal.

For Argentina’s third goal Messi put in a masterclass as he rushed down near the right touchline, with Josko Gvardiol hot on his heels after making his way to the penalty box, and as he neared the near post on the right side, he saw Alvarez slightly open. The number 10 slipped in a quick pass and Alvarez was able to slot it past the right of the keeper to put Argentina one step closer to the final, 3-0.

US announces fusion tech clean energy breakthrough for warming world

0

The US on Tuesday announced a breakthrough in clean energy for a warming globe through fusion technology that could transform the way the world is powered, imitating the process that makes the sun and stars shine.

White House Science and Technology Policy Director Arati Prabhakar called it “an engineering marvel beyond belief”.

“This is such a wonderful example of a possibility realized, a scientific milestone achieved, and a road ahead to the possibilities for clean energy,” she said at the announcement in Washington.

Fusion technology is the process by which two or smaller atoms are combined or fused into a bigger one and in nature, it is how the sun and stars are powered.

What makes the breakthrough achieved at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) of the Lawrence Livermore Nuclear Laboratory (LLNL) a gamechanger is that it produced more energy than it used for lasers to create fusion, unlike in current energy production methods that consume more power than they put out.

Scientists Robbie Scott with the Central Laser Facility (CLF) Plasma Physics Group who was involved in the research explained to Science Media said that it is “a bit like striking a match (and) with this experiment the match kept burning” and “fusion has the potential to provide a near-limitless, safe, clean, source of carbon-free baseload energy”.

The administration of President Joe Biden has promoted the breakthrough as a momentous step forward in its push for fighting against climate change by reducing the use of fossil fuels that currently produce most of the energy.

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said that it “will help us solve humanity’s most complex and pressing problems, like providing clean power to combat climate change”.

But, LLNL Director Kim Budil said that it would take a few decades of research to make power plants using the technology.

It would not take 50 or 60 years, “but probably with concerted effort and investment, a few decades of research on the underlying technologies could put us in a position to build a power plant”, she said.

National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Defence Programmes Deputy Administrator Marvin Adams said the breakthrough also had military applications.

It would enhance defense capability by testing nuclear weapons without having to carry out explosions and demonstrate the nuclear technology superiority of the US, he said.

Unlike current nuclear energy production that uses fission technology, which splits atoms, fusion does not create dangerous nuclear waste and scientists say that there would be no danger of radioactive leads.

The experiment at the NIF on December 5 that demonstrated the fusion capability focused 192 powerful laser beams at a pea-sized container with frozen hydrogen.

The laser beams’ energy was converted into x-rays that squeezed the hydrogen until it imploded releasing energy.

LLN said that the 2.05 megajoules (MJ) of energy used to set off the process delivered 3.15 MJ of fusion energy output.

There are two competing ways to achieve fusion, one with magnetic energy and the using lasers.

Now the laser method has achieved the breakthrough of producing more energy than is used to produce it.

Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that “it is an extremely important development in the fight against climate change”.

But noting that the application of fusion technology will take time, he added that it should not curtail the current efforts to contain climate change.

At the announcement, Prabhakar recalled that as a 19-year-old intern at the LLNL she had worked for three months “on this fun laser” in 1978.

She recalled that scientists told her, “We think that if you point enough lasers at a pellet of fuel, we want to see if we can get more energy released from fusion than the amount of energy that the lasers deliver into that palette”.

And it has taken decades to achieve it.

PKL: Tamil Thalaivas defeat UP Yoddhas via first tiebreaker as per new rules to reach semifinals

0

The Tamil Thalaivas pulled off an enthralling encounter 6-4 in the tiebreaker (teams were tied 36-36 at full time) to defeat the UP Yoddhas and take their place in the semifinals at the Dome, NSCI SVP Stadium, here on Tuesday.

The Thalaivas’ raiding duo Narender (13 points) and Ajinkya Pawar (10 points) were the undoubted stars of their victory.

A close first half kicked off with the Thalaivas becoming the first team that won the toss and chose to raid this season. It seemed the decision came with a gameplan as they raced into a 4-0 lead, Narender’s raids brilliantly complemented by a tight defense. The raider continued to be a menace through the half constantly registering touchpoints to keep the Yoddhas depleted.

For the Yoddhas, the duo of Pardeep Narwal and Surender Gill suffered, registering a mere five points between them through the half. Reduced to three, it took a SUPER TACKLE by Ashu Singh on Ajinkya Pawar that ensured the Yoddhas didn’t suffer an all-out. Right at the end of the half though, Narender came out again, to catch Sandeep Narwal and then Gurdeep to leave the Yoddhas on the brink of an all-out. The Thalaivas went into the break leading 16-14.

The Thalaivas kicked off the second half inflicting a first ALL-OUT on the Yoddhas to surge into a 19-15 lead. The Yoddhas fought back and Gill in particular started getting points at regular intervals. The Thalaivas kept their cool though, chipping away with just enough points to constantly keep the Yoddhas at arm’s length.

With five minutes to go, the two teams were separated by a mere three points and the tension was palpable. With three to go, Pardeep Narwal came alive, taking out M Himanshu and Abishek to leave the Thalaivas on the brink of an all-out. With just under two minutes to go, the Yoddhas got their first ALL OUT of the game to draw level at 33 apiece. With barely thirty seconds to go, Narwal came up with a SUPER RAID to give the Yoddhas a two-point lead.

And yet, the Thaialvas fought back, Pawar earning them one point before a tackle point on Narwal with 15 seconds left, drawing them level and taking the game to a tiebreaker. The Thalaivas edged a tense back-and-forth tiebreaker 6-4 to take the game and set up a Semi-Final clash against Puneri Paltan on Thursday.
