Rishab Shetty seeks divine permission for ‘Kantara’ sequel and gets it

Fans of Rishab Shetty of ‘Kantara’ fame are celebrating the fact that the actor-director-writer is now preparing for the sleeper-hit film’s sequel. Though there has been no official statement from Shetty about his plans, a ‘Daiva Nartaka’ has revealed the news.

According to the ‘Daiva Nartaka’, Umesh Gandhakadu, Shetty had sought divine permission to take up the ‘Kantara’ sequel. And he added: “The local god has given his consent.”

The ‘Daiva Nartaka’ said: “Rishab Shetty asked us to carry out Panjurli (a local diety) seva in Mangaluru. I have done the seva in the Madivalabettu temple located at Bandale.”

Gandhakadu added that he could not share more details, because when he becomes a ‘Daiva Nartaka’ it is the local god who speaks and not him.

When in his ‘Daiva Nartaka’ form, Gandhakadu made the request, the god indicated his approval. The god has suggested making the sequel with much care and meeting the caretaker of the pilgrimage center, Dr. Veerendra Hegde, a BJP Rajya Sabha member. The god has also asked Shetty to offer the prayer before the god, namely, Annappa Panjurli.

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature that gives users the ability to see profile icons within group chats on iOS.

Users need to open a group to see if this feature is enabled for their account, if it is enabled, they will see profile icons next to chat bubbles, reports WABetaInfo.

The ability to view profile icons within group chats has been released to users that installed the latest versions of WhatsApp from the App Store and it is rolling out to even more people over the coming days, the report said.

The feature allows users to easily jump to a certain date within a conversation.

PKL 9: Kabaddi players spend invigorating time with rehabilitated animals

0

After fighting it out in high-octane clashes for 9 weeks across Bengaluru, Pune, and Hyderabad, some of the Pro Kabaddi League players had a chance to put their feet up and enjoy an afternoon with rehabilitated animals — puppies, dogs, and cats — at the Heads Up For Tails Foundation.

Some of the players visited the Youth Organisation in Defence of Animals (YODA) Rehabilitation Centre For Animals here along with Puneri Paltan head coach B.C. Ramesh as a part of an initiative by Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) in collaboration with Ind’a’s first and most trusted pet care brand Heads Up For Tails (HUFT).

V Ajith Kumar (Jaipur Pink Panthers), Lucky Sharma (Jaipur Pink Panthers), Navneet (Jaipur Pink Panthers), Vijay Malik (Dabang Delhi K.C.), Monu (Dabang Delhi K.C.), Deepak (Dabang Delhi K.C.), Thanushan Laxmamohan (Tamil Thalaivas), Himanshu Narwal (Tamil Thalaivas), Aditya Shinde (Puneri Paltan) and Gaurav Khatri (Puneri Paltan) participated in this activity.

The Heads Up For Tails Foundation has been working tirelessly, with partner NGOs like YODA, across the country to raise awareness for adoption and animal welfare. As a part of the #AdoptDontShop movement, the Foundation has been organizing adoption drives and encouraging people to rewrite a shelter ‘nimal’s future. The Heads Up For Tails Foundation also carries out grassroots initiatives such as feeding and reflective collar drives.

The YODA Rehabilitation Centre For Animals specializes in the treatment of stray dogs and cats in certain areas of Mumbai and the PKL players were excited to play a part in promoting YODA’s efforts of encouraging pet lovers to adopt indie dogs instead of shopping for pets.

The kabaddi league is supporting the cause of bringing up indie dogs, who are native to the Indian subcontinent.

Speaking about his experience at the YODA Centre, Tamil Thalaivas’ Thanushan said, “Not many people do such service to the society and therefore I loved this experience. I am remembering my dogs at home being here at the shelter. I have three dogs at home. I haven’t spent much time with my dogs in the last 2-3 years because I have been training a lot. However, now I have decided that I will spend time with my dogs after the vivo PKL Season 9.”

Dabang Delhi’s Vijay Malik said that spending time with dogs is a gift for him, “I have a dog at home and I haven’t met them for around 3-4 months. Therefore, I was very happy to spend quality time with the dogs at the YODA shelter. This is like a gift for me. It also felt great to see that there is a shelter where stray dogs can receive treatment.”

The Puneri Paltan Head Coach BC Ramesh shared his love for dogs through an interesting story, “We decided to take care of a dog that was there near our hotel in Pune. We took him for walks every day and fed him proper food. I continued to check up on the dog after I left Pune as well by video calling the security guard and having a look at the dog to see if he is doing alright.”

Meanwhile, Akarsh Hebbar, Co-founder of YODA said, “We were happy to host the vivo Pro Kabaddi League players at YODA. It was exciting to see their interest in and love for animals. So great to see them encourage their fans and audience to support the cause as well.”

The PKL players will be back in action in the all-important Playoffs, which begins on December 13 at the Dome, NSCI SVP Stadium here. The Eliminator 1 & 2 matches will be held on Tuesday before the semifinals and final on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

Google redesigns Knowledge Panels to get large desktop grid

0

Google has redesigned the Knowledge Panel to get a large desktop grip as it will make it “easier to explore a topic by highlighting the most relevant and useful information” when searching.

Knowledge Panels are information boxes that appear on Google when users search for entities (people, places, organizations, things) that are in the Knowledge Graph.

They are intended to provide a quick snapshot of information on a topic based on Google’s understanding of available web content.

According to 9to5Google, these highlights will take the form of cards arranged in a grid layout.

The report said that there is now a large Knowledge Panel grid that starts with images and highlights things like age, spouse, and social media account.

Moreover, athletes might also get cards for height, net worth, and recent recap videos.

Google has yet to fully implement this new card redesign across all Knowledge Panel categories, or even across all results within a single category, according to the report.

Besides information, Google will also highlight “content from creators on the open web”.

Last week, Google started to roll out passkey support in Chrome with the Stable M108 version, for better safety.

The tech giant also started to roll out new memory and energy-saving modes to its web browser ‘Chrome’ on desktop.

UN witnesses notable advances on achieving gender equality: Guterres

0

Five years since a United Nations system-wide gender parity strategy was adopted, the world body has witnessed notable advances in achieving gender equality, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.

In 2017, Guterres launched the strategy on gender parity with targets and timelines, in a bid to enhance women’s representation at all levels and in all arenas in the UN system, reports Xinhua news agency.

In the past five years, the UN has achieved a series of notable “firsts”, he told the Group of Friends on Gender Parity on Monday marking the fifth anniversary of the strategy.

Gender parity was reached among the UN’s senior leadership for the first time in 2020, two years ahead of the target date, along with parity reached among heads and deputy heads of peace operations, as well as parity among the 130 UN resident coordinators, he said.

“The representation of women at headquarters locations has now reached parity. And the number of UN entities with at least 50 percent women staff has risen from five to 26.”

But the UN chief noted that “gaps remain”, pointing to slow progress in the field and even backward going in some cases.

He voiced concern over the decrease in women recruited into entry-level UN Secretariat positions in the field, saying this could have a serious impact on prospects for parity in the future.

As further improvement under the gender parity strategy, the UN will strengthen efforts to recruit women to the organization’s field missions, double down on policies and tools to make the world body a more attractive employer for women, and focus on reflecting gender and geographical diversity as complementary goals, Guterres said.

K’taka on alert as first case of Zika virus surfaces

0

The Health Department is on high alert following the confirmation of the first Zika virus case in the state. The virus has been confirmed in a five-year-old girl from Raichur district in north Karnataka.

Taking cognisance of it, the state government has directed the health department to initiate all precautionary measures from Tuesday to contain the disease.

The cold, cloudy weather and drizzles in the state due to the Mandous cyclone have further complicated the situation as the virus spread faster under these circumstances according to experts.

The authorities are gathering the travel history of the girl and precautions have already been initiated in the neighborhood and surroundings of the girl’s residence. The blood and urine samples of the parents and family members have been collected and so far five persons have tested negative.

Health Minister Dr. K. Sudhakar stated that the government is prepared to handle the situation. He stated that the tests done by the National Institute of Virology from Pune have confirmed the disease.

The girl was infected with a fever on November 13. The parents had got her admitted to the Government Hospital in Sindhanur. There it was detected that she is affected with Dengue fever. Later, the girl was shifted to Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) and administered treatment from November 15 to 18.

The doctors had sent the samples of urine and blood to the Pune laboratory. The first Zika virus in the country was found in Kerala in 2020. Severe symptoms of fever, body pain, pain in joints, rash, and conjunctivitis are found in persons affected with the Zika virus.

Zika virus is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species of mosquito. These mosquitoes usually bite during day time. The disease also spreads through unprotected intercourse and blood transmission.

Ben Stokes looks at the ‘big picture’ after eighth win in nine matches as captain

0

England defeated Pakistan by 26-5uns in the second Test at Multan to win a historic series on the sub-continent but captain Ben Stokes said they should not rest on their laurels but rather pursue the big picture they are looking to achieve.

By winning the second Test, England took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-Test series with Pakistan. It also won the eighth win for England in nine Test matches since the new team management of Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum took charge in May 2022.

The victory in the Multan Test also secured England a historic series win on their first visit to Pakistan in 17 years.

Stokes said his team was aware of what they achieved this week but would like to take it forward and

“Coming to the subcontinent, it’s always a tough place to come and win (games of) cricket. We know what we’ve achieved this week. We know that it’s something that’s not unheard of, but very rare to do, especially as an English team,” Stokes told broadcaster Sky Sports after the match

“We’ll take it all in. We do understand how special achievement this is this week, but as we keep saying, these series victories and these wins are part of a much bigger picture in what we’re trying to achieve at the moment.”

The victory in Multan was also the eighth win for Stokes since he took over as captain from Joe Root. He said he feels honoured and privileged to be a part of something like this.

“When I first got the job, I just wanted to come in and just try and change a few things up and get things going in a different direction. We were never focusing too much on results when I came into the job, and obviously the bigger picture and stuff like that, but sheesh, it’s been an amazing nine games to start with.

“I just feel very honored and very privileged to be a part of something like this and having everyone – not just the players but the backroom staff and everyone that works alongside us – being on the same path. It’s really, really good,” Stokes added.

Meta shuts down Connectivity division

0

Meta has reportedly shut down its Connectivity division almost 10 years after launching the initiative.

The company will now split the division across its infrastructure and central products teams report to The Verge.

Launched in 2013, Meta Connectivity (formerly Facebook Connectivity) aimed to increase online usage so users could access the company’s social networks.

Through the initiative, the company developed and later abandoned a project that involved high-flying, autonomous drones to beam the internet to remote areas of the world.

It also focused on creating a low-Earth orbit satellite-based internet system similar to Starlink, but Amazon hired the team working on it last year.

It remains unclear when exactly Meta shut down its Connectivity arm, but the disappearance coincides with last month’s layoffs and reorganization that eliminated about 11,000 jobs at the company.

Meta expects further losses in 2023 as the company is investing extensively in CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s costly effort to build the metaverse.

In addition to big initiatives including satellites, drones, and an internet-connected helicopter, Meta Connectivity also provided free internet in developing countries, which allowed users to access only Facebook and a few other websites.

Twitter Blue is back as Musk announces to remove all legacy verified badges

0

Twitter Blue subscription with verification was relaunched on Tuesday and people needed a verified phone number to sign up, as Elon Musk announced he will remove all legacy blue badges in the coming months.

The Blue subscription service with verification costs $8 for Android users and $11 for iPhone owners per month.

“Starting today, when you subscribe your account will get access to subscriber-only features including Edit Tweet, 1080p video uploads, reader mode, and a blue checkmark (once your account has been reviewed),” said the company.

“Soon, subscribers with the blue checkmark will get priority ranking in search, mentions, and replies to help lower the visibility of scams, spam, and bots,” the micro-blogging platform added.

To subscribe to Blue badge, your Twitter account must be at least 90 days old and have a confirmed phone number. Musk said that basic Blue will have half the number of ads.

“We will offer a higher tier with no ads next year,” he added. The new Twitter owner also announced that in a few months, “we will remove all legacy blue checks”.

“The way in which they were given out was corrupt and nonsensical,” he added.

Subscribers will be able to change their handle, display name, or profile photo, “but if they do, they’ll temporarily lose the blue checkmark until their account is reviewed again”, said Twitter.

Musk last month launched the Blue subscription plan with verification but later postponed it after it met with huge controversy as several fake accounts came up on the platform, impersonating brands and celebrities.

Musk also said that the prior “Twitter management and board lied to make their user numbers seem artificially higher, so turned a blind eye to fake/spam accounts”.

Bilkis Bano case: SC judge recuses from hearing plea against release of convicts

0

A Supreme Court judge, Justice Bela M. Trivedi, on Tuesday recused from hearing the petition filed by Bilkis Bano against the release of 11 men convicted of gang-raping her in the 2002 Gujarat riots and also accused of murdering her family members.

The matter was listed before a bench of Justices Ajay Rastogi and Bela Trivedi. Justice Trivedi chose to recuse the case. In the plea, Bano said the release of all the convicts came as a shock.

The petition, filed through advocate Shobha Gupta, said: “The premature release of all the convicts came as a shock not only to the petitioner, to her grown-up daughters, to her family, but also to the society at large, nationally and internationally, and the society across segments had shown their anger, disappointment, distrust and protest to the clemency shown by the government by releasing criminals like the 11 convicts of the case.”

Terming the release order mechanical, the plea said the en masse premature release of the convicts in the much talked about the case of Bilkis Bano, has shaken the conscience of the society and resulted in a number of agitations across the country.

The plea contended that shocking news of the premature release of all the convicts, including the writ petitioner, was revealed to the present petitioner and the public at large when the convicts were honored and photographed in full public glare.

Bilkis Bano said she was “extremely-extremely” hurt, disturbed, and full of dejection with the early release and sudden and traumatizing presence and existence of 11 of her rapists who brutally gang-raped her while she was five months pregnant and inflicted on her person and soul extreme level of violence and brutality.

Bano has also separately filed a review petition against challenging the May 13 judgment of the apex court, saying that Maharashtra’s remission policy should be applied in the present case instead of the 1992 remission policy of Gujarat since the trial had happened in Maharashtra.

Jagan will decide on BRS request for support, says YSRCP leader

With Telangana’s Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) planning to open an office in Andhra Pradesh, a top leader of the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) on Monday made some interesting comments.

YSRCP General Secretary and political advisor to the Andhra Pradesh government, Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy said if the BRS makes a request for support from his party, party President and Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy will take a decision after discussing the proposal in the party.

He made it clear that the interests of Andhra Pradesh are of paramount importance to the YSRCP. He also ruled out an alliance with any party.

“We have clarity. Our leader has been saying that the interests of Andhra Pradesh are the number one priority for us. We work for this independently,” he said while interacting with media persons.

Replying to another query, Ramakrishna Reddy said the YSRCP has no plans to contest elections in Tamil Nadu or Karnataka.

“Our party is dedicated to the people of Andhra Pradesh and their welfare and development. This is our only agenda. After fulfilling this, we may think of any other issue,” he said.

Ramakrishna Reddy’s comments came amid reports that BRS (earlier known as TRS) is looking to expand its footprint in Andhra Pradesh.

Telangana’s ruling party was rechristened as the BRS and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao formally launched it in Hyderabad on December 9.

BRS leaders are scouting for a suitable site in Vijayawada to establish the BRS office for Andhra Pradesh.

Telangana Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav is likely to visit Vijayawada later this week to select one of the three land sites proposed by sympathizers of the BRS.

KCR is expected to visit Vijayawada to lay the foundation stone for the BRS office.

After the formal launch of the BRS, a huge billboard proclaiming “Jai Ho KCR” came up in Vijayawada. Hoardings to welcome the new national party have also come up in the city.

Virat Kohli has always found ways to get runs, do the job for his team, says K.L Rahul

0

Ahead of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh starting from Wednesday, India’s stand-in Test captain K.L Rahul feels that talismanic batter Virat Kohli is someone who has always found ways to get runs and do the job of getting the runs for his team in red-ball cricket too.

Since September, Kohli has been in blazing form in white-ball matches, notching up a T20I century against Afghanistan in Asia Cup and then playing some vintage knocks during the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

On Saturday, he got his 44th ODI century against Bangladesh, and with India now all set to play in Tests after nearly six months, all eyes will be on Kohli to carry his good form in white-ball matches to red-ball cricket.

“We haven’t really played too much Test cricket for you to pass that statement. But he’s been in good form; he’s done really well for us in T20 cricket. Recently, he got that (ODI) hundred against Bangladesh here. Obviously, he will take some confidence into the Test matches as well. He’s been around for so long.”

“He is such an experienced player; he knows what to do. His mindset and attitude have always remained the same. The passion he has for the game, and the commitment he gives to his team, have been on the show for everyone to see, so you can’t really question ‘that. He’s a great player. He has always found ways to get runs and do the job for his team and I am sure he will do that again,” said Rahul in a pre-series press conference.

India will be without regular skipper Rohit Sharma for the first Test from December 14-18 at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium and Rahul hopes he is fit in time for the second Test at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium from December 22-26.

“Rohit Sharma is an important player for us. He is a very experienced player and captain of our team. With the captain being injured, he is someone that the team will really miss but fingers crossed, we hope he can recover quickly and come back for the second Test.”

There was a little bit of surprise when Cheteshwar Pujara was named as vice-captain for Tests against Bangladesh as the now-sacked selection committee had said Rishabh Pant and Rahul were being groomed as future leaders of the Indian team. Asked about the same, Rahul didn’t go much into the specifics of the vice-captaincy change.

“Regarding vice-captain, at least I don’t know like what are the criteria. Whoever is picked, you give yourself a pat on the back and you continue. I know that when you are the vice-captain, you become really happy. But it really doesn’t change too many things, everybody in the team knows their roles and responsibilities and how much the team appreciates their contribution.”

“Rishabh and Pujara both have been brilliant for us in Test cricket and have done the job so many times. So we really don’t think much as everyone tries to take their responsibilities and we carry on as a team. The team wins as eleven players and when we go down, we go down as a whole team. Everyone has responsibility and we try to help each other and enjoy our cricket.”

With no Rohit, Rahul and Shubman Gill are going to be the likely opening pair for India in Chattogram. Rahul was in praise for the skillsets and attitude shown by Gill in his initial days and stressed how important it is to back youngsters who are capable of doing well for the Indian team.

“Shubman has been a brilliant player and it is wonderful to see his transformation (in ODIs). In Tests, whenever he has got the opportunity, he has done the job for the team. He’s very young and exciting and has the temperament for the longest format. In every format, he is excited and I am sure he will be excited about this opportunity to do the job for the team.

“What we can do is back young, exciting and talented players. It is important as a leader to back your players, and let them make their own decisions. At the same time, it is also important that we enjoy our cricket and not really think too much. It is about what we require to do as a team and as individuals to win the game for the country. Excited to see how will he go now.”

Parents sue Fortnite creator for ‘addictive’ game

0

A group of Canadian parents has sued the maker of the video game Fortnite, claiming it turns kids into gaming addicts, which makes them stop eating, sleeping and bathing.

According to BBC, a Canadian Supreme Court judge has approved the lawsuit filed by parents against Epic Games’ Fortnite.

The court documents said that the World Health Organization recognized video game addiction in 2018.

Epic Games said that it had “industry-leading parental controls that empower parents to supervise their child’s digital experience”, according to the report.

“Parents can receive playtime reports that track the amount of time their child plays each week, and require parental permission before purchases are made,” the company said.

“We plan to fight this in court. We believe the evidence will show that this case is meritless,” it added.

In the lawsuit, one of the children cited having played the game for more than 7,700 hours in less than two years, said the report.

Furthermore, the legal action claims that the game was purposefully designed to be “highly addictive”.

More than 350 million people have played the popular online game. While the game is free to play, players pay to use in-game money called “V Bucks”. The game has made more than $9 billion worldwide, the report added.

WhatsApp working on ‘view once text’ feature

0

Meta-owned WhatsApp is reportedly working on bringing the ability to send “view once text” messages to a future update of the app.

Previously, the feature was launched with support for photos and videos.

The feature is currently available in WhatsApp’s Android beta version, which lets users send messages that can only be viewed once before disappearing, reports WABetaInfo.

A padlock-style button with the traditional send message logo may one day be available in the app to access the feature, according to the report.

With this feature, users will not need to delete the information shared unwillingly, as it will be automatically deleted from the recipient’s phone.

As view, once images and videos can not be forwarded and copied, similarly it will not be possible to do the same with the view once text messages.

WhatsApp currently prevents recipients from screenshotting a piece of view once media if they are using the most recent version of its app, but it is unclear whether this protection will be extended to text messages, said the report.

Earlier this month, the messaging platform also rolled out a new disappearing messages shortcut on Android beta. The new shortcut is placed within the ‘Manage Storage’ section and is marked as a tool to save space.
