Ram Charan, wife Upasana expecting their first child

Pan-India star Ram Charan, who received unanimous praise for his blockbuster movie ‘RRR’, and his wife, Upasana are expecting their first child.

Ram’s father, Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi, took to his Twitter handle on Monday to share the happy news with his fans and followers.

He tweeted, “With the blessings of Shri Hanuman Ji -We are delighted to share that Ram Charan and Upasana are expecting their first child. With Love & Gratitude: Surekha & Chiranjeevi Konidela, Shobhana & Anil Kamineni.”

Ram retweeted his father’s tweet with a heart and prayer emoji. Ram and Upasana tied the knot in 2012, a year before his Hindi debut in the form of ‘Zanjeer’ which didn’t perform well at the box office.

He was most recently seen in an extended cameo in ‘Acharya’ which starred his father in the lead role.

Proceeds of crime of over Rs 1000 cr of cyber and crypto assets frauds attached: Govt in LS

Proceeds of the crime of more than Rs 1000 crore related to cyber and crypto assets frauds have been attached under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA), the Government informed the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Besides, estimated GST evasion by such companies was nearly Rs 22,936 crore between April 2019 and November 2022, it added.

Ministry of Finance, in a written reply, said that the Enforcement Directorate is investigating several cases related to cyber and crypto assets frauds wherein online gaming, etc. have been used for committing fraud and siphoning the proceeds generated thereof.

“In these cases, as on December 6, 2022, proceeds of crime of more than Rs.1000 crore have been attached/seized / freezed under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA). Also, 10 Prosecution Complaints (PCs) including 02 supplementary PCs have been filed before the Special Court, PMLA,” it said.

Furthermore, it said that in so far as evasion of Goods and Services Tax (GST) is concerned, CBIC formations have initiated investigations against some gaming companies (including Online gaming companies) located in India as well as abroad. The estimated evasion of GST by these companies works out to Rs 22,936 crore, relating to the period April 2019 to November 2022.

Minister of State, Ministry of Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary said, “Assets amounting to Rs 289.28 crore have been seized under section 37A of Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999.”

On a question of whether the Government proposes to ban such gaming companies, the reply said, “Necessary action as per provisions of law is taken against such companies, as mentioned above.”

On a question of whether online gaming companies are not paying income tax and whether the Income Tax Department has issued notices to many gaming companies, the reply said, “The information regarding online Gaming companies, which are not paying income tax and where the Income-tax Department has issued notices to such gaming companies, is not available, since no specific identification code for online gaming entities is available in Income Tax Return. The disclosure of information about specific taxpayers is prohibited except as provided under section 138 of the Income Tax Act, 1961.”

England earn historic Test series victory in Pakistan with tense 26-run win in Multan

England earned a historic Test series victory in Pakistan after tearaway pacer Mark Wood took the tourists to a tense 26-run win in the second Test here on Monday.

Resuming from 198/4 on day four, Pakistan appeared on course to chase down a tricky 355 as Saud Shakeel (94) and Mohammad Nawaz (45) took the hosts to 290/5 through their 80-run partnership for the sixth wicket, only for Wood to swing the momentum back in England’s favor by taking out both set batters in leg-side strangles just before lunch.

From there onwards, the Pakistan batting order suffered a collapse despite some resistance from Agha Salman (20 not out) and debutant Abrar Ahmed (17). Eventually, Pakistan was all out for 328 in 102.1 overs, giving England a Test series victory in Pakistan since the 2000/01 tour, after having registered a thrilling last session in the first Test at Rawalpindi on their return to the country after 17 years.

The close loss at Multan means Pakistan suffered their second successive series defeat at home, after losing 1-0 to Australia in a three-match series in March this year. Wood finished with figures of 4/65 in 21 overs with Ollie Robinson (2/23) and James Anderson (2/44) being impressive in another England victory.

On day four, Pakistan added just 12 runs to their overnight total before all-rounder Faheem Ashraf (10) hit a turning delivery from Joe Root straight to slip. Shakeel was serene in his stay at the crease, while Nawaz was quick in getting boundaries and giving Pakistan hope of chasing a tall total.

But Wood came in and forced Nawaz to glove a short ball behind keeper Ollie Pope. Wood would also grab the key scalp of Shakeel on the stroke of lunch, though a huge debate erupted over whether the catch taken by Pope was clean or not, turning out to be a game-changing decision.

After a soft signal was given out, third umpire Joel Wilson had a lot of look at replays and concluded that Pope did manage to get his gloves under the ball to take the catch, ending a gritty inning of Shakeel lasting 213 deliveries.

From there, the result was a foregone conclusion as England now aims for a rare series sweep in Pakistan when the third and final Test at Karachi takes place from December 17-21.

Indian U18 girls team wins silver at Asia Rugby Sevens

India’s U-18 girl’s team won the silver medal after losing to UAE 26-5 in the final at the recently concluded Asia Rugby Sevens held here.

UAE is the only team to have beaten India as they registered comprehensive victories against Thailand, Nepal, and Malaysia in the previous rounds. This equals their record performance of winning the silver medal at the previous edition held in 2021.

“It’s been a gratifying and rewarding 12 months for Rugby India. We now have gained silver in the u18s at the end of 2021, silver in the u20 this in Uzbekistan, silver in the women’s this year in Jakarta, and now with this silver it makes us 4 silvers in a row,” said Rahul Bose, president, Rugby India.

“There is a clear 3-tiered structure for the women to move into the top rung into the future. The U18 boys have gotten the 4th place which mirrors the 4th place of the U20 boys also got. It’s a solid start for them to work upward to the top 3. We have work to do in the men’s but this tournament is a lovely way to round up our ambitions and intentions for the 21-22 season. We can safely say, the mission is accomplished and has lots to do in the future. Lastly, thank you to Nepal Rugby for hosting us with wonderful facilities and excellent warmth and hospitality and Asia Rugby for inviting India to participate.”

The boys’ team finished fourth in their first-ever outing at a tournament of this stature. India qualified by a whisker for the semifinals where they were outplayed by UAE 36-0 to pit them against Malaysia for the bronze medal match. The bronze medal match was won by Malaysia with a score of 36-5 to nudge India out of the podium but put them on the map as strong contenders on the Asia level.

WhatsApp rolls out feature to enable users find groups by contact name

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has started to roll out a new feature that gives users the ability to search groups by entering a contact name on the Desktop version.

The feature appeared to some users after installing the latest WhatsApp Desktop update, reports WABetaInfo.

With the new feature, users can get a list of all their recent groups in common with a contact by entering their name within the search bar.

It is helpful for users who joined many groups on the platform and do not remember the name of a group in common with a specific contact. It will be rolled out to more people over the coming days, the report said.

Last month, the messaging platform was reportedly working on a mute shortcut for group chats for a future update of WhatsApp Desktop beta.

The mute shortcut will display at the top of group chats and will help users to disable notifications of messages received in the group.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company is bringing digital avatars to the messaging platform.

Actress Rakul Preet Singh, who is sharing the screen with him in the film, told ‘Free Press Journal’, “I have to tell you like Hindustani, he has prosthetics in this film too. He is playing a 90-year-old character in this film. The prosthetic makeup takes four to five hours. He reaches at 5 a.m. so that he is on the sets by 10 a.m.”

She further mentioned that the veteran actor has been a huge part of Indian cinema and nobody knows the landscape better than him, “Removing the prosthetic makeup takes two hours and it’s so hot in Chennai but he does not care. I think that’s a different generation. I think in 100 years, he has been part of cinema for more than 60 years. More than 75 percent of the time he has existed, he has been part of cinema. Nobody knows cinema better than him”.

The semifinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will see Croatia take on Argentina and France play Morocco, look as if they will be a triumph of pragmatism over brilliance and emblematic of hard work on the pitch.

Croatia reached the semifinals for the second time in four years after a nerve-shredding penalty shootout against Brazil that left the pre-tournament favorites in tears.

Nearly every team in the last four has a standout player, and for Argentina, of course, it is Lionel Messi, with the 35-year-old playing in what is almost certainly his last World Cup, and looking like a man with a mission as he steered them past Australia in the last 16 and in a shootout against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals.

Canada’s immigration backlog shrinks to 2.2 mn: IRCC

Canada’s immigration backlog came down to just over 2.2 million from last month’s 2.4 million, according to new data revealed by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

With this, the citizenship inventory stands at 3,14,630 applicants as of November 30, compared to 3,31,401 on October 31, CIC News reported.

The permanent residence inventory stands at 5,12,342 people as of December 2, compared to 5,06,421 as of November 3.

The biggest reduction was seen in the temporary residence inventory, which stood at 14,16,125 people on December 2, compared to 15,37,566 persons as of November 3.

As of December 2, there are 43,326 applications for Express Entry programs waiting in the queue — an increase of over 3,500 since November 3 data, which stood at 39,589.

The inventory for all family-class immigration programs has dropped slightly to 1,27,091 compared to November 3 when it was 1,28,112.

The Spouses and Partners sponsorship program are among the largest inventories among all lines of business, at 62,106, a minimal increase compared with November 3.

The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) has an inventory of 53,770 persons compared to 55,653 persons waiting for decisions in November.

September 30 data showed that there were 1.5 million applications in the backlog, meaning that IRCC cleared over 3,50,000 applications from the backlog.

This comes while the number of applications in inventory has risen for permanent residency, CIC News reported.

IRCC says that between January and October 2022, they produced 4.3 million final decisions for permanent residents, temporary residents, and citizens compared to 2.3 million final decisions in the same period last year.

The Canadian citizenship body says it wants to have a less than 50 percent backlog across all lines of business by the end of March 2023.

To achieve this, IRCC began the transition towards 100 percent digital applications for most permanent resident programs on September 23.

It also hopes to make all citizenship applications digital by the end of this year, including those for minors under 18.

Gurbaz was well supported by Avishka Fernando, who made 54 runs from 30 balls. His innings were laced with six boundaries and two sixes. Shoaib Malik and Sadeera Samarawickrama contributed with 32 and 38 not-out runs respectively.

Kashika Kapoor makes her B’wood debut with Pradip Khairwar’s rom-com

Actress Kashika Kapoor, who was seen in the web series ‘The Vibe Hunters, is all set to make her Bollywood debut with director Pradip Khairwair’s next film, a romantic comedy.

She said: “Finally, now that I am able to speak about it and by the grace of Ganpati Bappa, I am ready to begin working on my first Bollywood movie. My movie is scheduled to start shooting by the end of next week, and I am beyond excited about the chance. I’ve always pictured myself acting in my first Bollywood movie at the age of 20, and with this movie, my dream is finally coming true.”

“We took a lot of time to understand and develop each aspect of my personality for this part. For my role, I have been attending workshops constantly, and it has been a fascinating experience,” she added.

Pradeep is known for films such as ‘Sarkar 3’, ‘Blind Love’, and many others, and is now coming up with another project which is still untitled.

“The movies will cover a very delicate subject which is girl education with a strong message that will be sent to young people, but the story will also take many unexpected turns. I will be sharing the screen with Anuj Saini and I am really excited about it,” said Kashika.

The actress visited the Siddhi Vinayak temple to seek blessings and said that she hopes to get positive feedback for her upcoming film.

“Every actor in the business always hopes to star in a movie about a subject that will gain more fame. However, I am making my big Bollywood debut with a movie that has such a strong message, and for that, I am truly grateful and thankful to my director and the entire team. Making a big debut under Pradeep sir’s guidance is something that I am really looking forward to,” she concluded.

With four wins in their past five games, the Haryana Steelers have enthralled their fans and showcased their skills on the mat. Despite a sensational 50-33 win over Telugu Titans on Thursday, at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium here, Haryana Steelers were unable to book a spot in the Playoffs, missing the margin by a whisker.

Ahead of their final encounter of the season against Tamil Thalaivas on Saturday, the JSW Sports-owned franchise feels confident about finishing the campaign on a high. Speaking of the upcoming game, Vinay said that the match would be a good chance for Manpreet Singh’s side to prove their mettle and show that they can beat any team on any given day.

“This is a sport, and wins and losses are part and parcel. We are very close on the table to the teams that have qualified, so one or two close results made the difference. But we are glad that we have showcased what we are capable of in the past few games and now our focus is completely on our next opponents, as we look to end the campaign with a bang,” the Haryana Steelers raider was quoted as saying in a release on Friday.

Tamil Thalaivas have already qualified for the playoffs with 66 points in 21 games but will be entering into the contest on the back of three straight wins. But Vinay insisted that Haryana Steelers have prepared well for the match and are more than ready for the challenge in store.

“We have worked really hard in the training for the upcoming game. We have studied our opponents well and we realize that they have a good raiding unit with Narender leading the show. He already has 177 points so far in the tournament, and we have studied his moves and strategies accordingly,” Vinay said.

“At this point, Haryana has shown that we can beat any team on any given day and if we can keep Narender out of the mat, we will have a good chance of getting the results. It will really motivate all the players in our squad to get the win in the final game,” he added.

Vinay further went on to praise the team’s unity in the recent games and credited the same for the positive results. He insisted that it will be a crucial factor in the upcoming match on Saturday against Thalaivas.

“We always back each other and offer our support to each other. While Manpreet and Meetu have been solid in raiding throughout the season, they consistently motivated others which allowed me, K. Prapanjan, and Rakesh Narwal among others to play freely and we all were able to contribute to the team in the recent matches,” Vinay, who scored seven points against Titans in the last match, said.

“Jaideep and Mohit form the backbone of our defense and the entire team relies on them. Yet, the two youngsters never feel any pressure and are always willing to give their best to the team. Such unity in the team makes all the difference, and I am confident, it will make the difference on Saturday,” he signed off.

‘Kantara’ fame director and actor Rishab Shetty had launched Rashmika Mandanna with his first venture as a director in the hit ‘Kirik Party’ movie.

Rakshit Shetty, the friend of Rishab Shetty of ‘Charlie 777’ fame, was the hero of the movie. Rashmika and Rakshit Shetty fell in love and got engaged. Later, Rashmika got a breakthrough in the Telugu film industry and went on to become a successful actress.

The couple called off their engagement citing incompatibility. Recently, when asked about her launch, Rashmika didn’t even take the name of the production house or the director. She gestured with fingers that “this production house approached me and they were heads over heels for having me in the project.”

Rishab Shetty had made his displeasure clear in an interview that he doesn’t like heroines who use gestures to recall the production house which launched them.

In wake of the Delhi High Court ordering the taking down of a sexually explicit video of a judicial officer, social media platforms on Friday told the court that they have removed the video and blocked several URLs.

However, WhatsApp, the Meta-owned instant messaging app, told the court that it is not possible to erase the video from the platform unless it is provided with users’ phone numbers and the court’s order.

Appearing for WhatsApp, senior advocate Kapil Sibal said that if they are provided with phone numbers, they will pull down the video if ordered by the court.

At this, the single judge bench of Justice Yashwant Varma told the plaintiff’s counsel Ashish Dixit, to provide the phone numbers so that WhatsApp can take the requisite steps.

Justice Varma listed the matter for the next hearing on February 8.

The WhatsApp argument took place when the court was hearing a plea by the woman present in the video, who is reportedly the judicial officer’s steno. She moved the court arguing that the video is fabricated.

The Delhi HC on late November 30, directed the Centre and social media platforms to ensure that the sexually explicit video of a judicial officer, which had gone viral on the internet on November 29, be not shared, distributed, forwarded, or posted further.

Justice Varma had also asked for the video to be taken down and blocked from all ISPs, messaging platforms, and social media platforms.

“Bearing in mind the sexually explicit nature of the contents of that video and taking into consideration the imminent, grave, and irreparable harm that is likely to be caused to the privacy rights of the plaintiff, an ad interim ex parte injunction is clearly warranted,” the court had said.

The plea had sought a permanent direction to restrain the social media platforms from publishing or telecasting the video in question.

The court had also observed that the provisions under Section 354C of IPC as well as Section 67A of the Information and Technology Act “would appear to be violated” if further circulation, sharing, and distribution of the video weren’t restrained.
