US Democrats increase Senate tally and lose it, all in a week

0

US Senate Democrats will start the next Congress with their numbers exactly where they are now, 50 in the 100-member chamber, despite an extra seat they picked with the Georgia run-off victory earlier in the week. They lost one on Friday. But they will retain control of the Senate as of now.

Kirsten Sinema, a Democratic senator from Arizona, announced Friday she is changing her party affiliation to Independent.

“Registering as an independent and showing up to work with the title of independent is a reflection of who I’ve always been, and it’s a reflection of who Arizona is,” Senator Sinema said in a video. “We don’t line up to do what we’re told. We do what’s right for our state and for our country. I’m going to be the same person I’ve always been.”

Sinema has also said to Politico that her voting behavior will not change. “I don’t anticipate that anything will change about the Senate structure,” she said. “I intend to show up to work and do the same work that I always do. I just intend to show up to work as an independent.”

Sinema’s exit will rob the Senate Democrats of the extra cushion they were looking forward to working with in the next Congress, with their tally up to 51 to 49 Republicans.

Democrats are back to 50, but Republicans will stay at 49.

The US Senate has two other Independents – Bernie Sanders and Angus King, but both caucuses with the Democratic party and are Democrats for all practical purposes. Sinema will potentially be more independent of the Democrats, because she has not said if she will, or won’t, caucus with Democrats.

Sinema was one of the two moderate Democrats in the Senate, along with Joe Manchin. They often took positions contrary to the rest of the party and even forced President Joe Biden to trim and dial down his ambitious legislative efforts such as the infrastructure bill and the Inflation Reduction Act.

In an evenly divided chamber – 50 Democrats to 50 Republicans, with Vice President Kamal Harris’s tie-breaking vote – every Democratic vote mattered and Sinema and Manchin frustrated the party on many occasions holding up their vote for long and protracted negotiations.

With Raphael Warnock’s victory in the Georgia run-off earlier this week, Democrats were looking forward to working with a 51-49 majority in the next Congress that starts on January 3. And they were still celebrating when Sinema delivered them her shocking decision to switch to independence.

2nd Test, Day 1: Abrar’s dream debut, Babar’s fifty give Pakistan edge over England

0

Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed’s dream debut and skipper Babar Azam’s fifty gave the hosts an edge over England on the first day of the second Test at the Multan Cricket Stadium, here on Friday.

The 24-year-old leg-spinner’s 7-114 helped Pakistan bowl out England for 281 in their first innings. In reply, Pakistan was 107-2 at the stumps on Day 1, with Babar Azam unbeaten on 61 and Saud Shakeel on 32, trailing by 174 runs.

Of the 12 wickets that fell on the day, James Anderson was the only fast bowler to dismiss a batter when he found an edge off Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq, who departed without scoring. Abdullah Shafique scored 14 before edging spinner Jack Leach to keeper Ollie Pope, but Babar and Saud saw off the day with a third-wicket unbroken stand of 56.

Earlier, Abrar was introduced in just the ninth over, and the spinner cleaned up Zak Crawley in his first over with a sharp googly to break the opening stand but went on to concede 11 runs off his next over as England continued to attack.

After five overs, Abrar had conceded 39 runs as Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope put up a good partnership. He himself broke the stand in the 19th over by trapping Duckett in front. He followed it up with the big wicket of Joe Root, trapped LBW with another superb leg-break.

Ben Stokes (30) and Will Jacks (31) showed some resistance after lunch with a 61-run sixth-wicket stand before Abrar bamboozled the England captain with a superb wrong’un. Ben Duckett (63) and Pope (60) were the main scorers in an England innings that finished at the stroke of tea after skipper Stokes won the toss and decided to bat.

The visitors managed to add fifty runs for the last three wickets courtesy of a free-stroking Mark Wood who finished with 36 before Zahid Mahmood got three to wrap up the innings quickly and finish with 3-63.

Brief scores:

England 281 in 51.4 overs (Ben Duckett 63, Ollie Pope 60; Abrar Ahmed 7-114) lead Pakistan 107/2 in 28 overs (Babar Azam 61 not out) by 174 runs

Players always believed we would qualify for the Playoffs, says Dabang Delhi coach Krishan Hooda

0

Dabang Delhi K.C. survived a major dip in performance due to loss of form and secured a place in the Play-offs of Season 9 of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), making a strong comeback in the last few matches. Despite the loss of form, Delhi head coach Krishan Hooda said his players always believed they will make it to the knockout stage.

The Dabang Delhi K.C. played a roller-coaster of a match against the Bengal Warriors but managed to qualify for the PKL Playoffs after pulling off a 46-46 tie in Hyderabad on Thursday.

The Delhi side got off to a stupendous start in the season, winning five games on the trot. But thereafter, they found it difficult to pick up victories consistently.

Speaking about making it to the Playoffs, Delhi head coach Krishan Hooda said, “It’s such a big tournament and it gives us immense happiness to qualify for the Playoffs. To qualify after facing a major dip in performance earlier in the tournament is very satisfying for us. We have a very good team. Even after facing a major loss in form, the players believed that they will qualify for the Playoffs. I would like to congratulate the team for achieving this feat.”

“We’ll surely play a good match against Bengaluru Bulls and we’ll definitely try to win the game. The result will depend on how the teams play on the day. If they make fewer mistakes, they’ll win and if we make fewer mistakes, we’ll win. So, let’s see what happens,” Hooda was quoted as saying in a release on Friday.

The Dabang Delhi K.C. Captain Naveen Kumar said that the team will start afresh in the Playoffs. “It has been quite a difficult season as all teams are evenly matched. Now we’ll forget about the past and start afresh in the Playoffs. We’ll consider the Eliminator match as the first match of our season and move towards the trophy once again.”

The Bengaluru Bulls will be hoping to continue their good form and go into the Playoffs high on confidence. However, they’ll face stiff competition from U Mumba’s raider Guman Singh.

The Tamil Thalaivas will also look to continue their winning run ahead of their playoff match on December 13, 2022. However, Haryana’s raider Rakesh Narwal showcased excellent form in his team’s last game against Telugu Titans.

The Patna Pirates and Bengal Warriors will be aiming to finish their vivo Pro Kabaddi League Season 9 campaigns on a high when they take on each other in the last league match of the season. While all-rounder Rohit Gulia will lead the charge for the Pirates, the Warriors will hope for their Captain Maninder Singh to take them over the line.

1st T20I: Australia Women win toss, opt to bowl against India Women

0

Australia Women captain Alyssa Healy won the toss and opted to bowl first against India Women in the first T20I of the five-match series at D.Y. Patil Stadium, here on Friday.

Kim Garth is making her debut for Australia while Anjali Sarvani is also playing for the first time for India. As per the Australian skipper, it will be difficult for the bowler to grip the ball with dew, so she decided to bowl first.

“We are going to have a bowl. Hope to suck into this powerful Indian line-up. It looks like a good chance to get it together, and hopefully with a little bit of dew later, it might get a bit hard to grip the ball,” said Healy at the toss.

“Things have changed a lot since the last time we were here. It’s been a while since we have been here and it is a rare opportunity to play cricket T20Is in India. We have a debutant in Kim Garth, who is making her debut for a second country,” she added.

On the other hand, India skipper Harrmanpreet said she also wanted to bowl first.

“We wanted to bowl first as well. I haven’t had a great experience with the toss, my team does not rely on it a lot. We have a great variety of bowling. In batting also, we have a great experience, and we want to continue with that. Debut for Anjali Sarvani,” said Harmanpreet.

Amazon reveals anime MMO game ‘Blue Protocol’

0

Amazon has revealed a new anime-style massively multiplayer online (MMO) game titled ‘Blue Protocol’ at ‘The Game Awards, which is scheduled to be launched in the second half of next year.

The game is developed by Bandai Namco and will be released on the PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC, reports The Verge.

The game is described as a multiplayer action role-playing game (RPG), which allows players to choose different roles and enjoy either the story or multiplayer mode.

A closed beta of the game for PC players is expected to be released early next year.

According to Amazon’s vice president of games, Christoph Hartmann, the publishing arrangement came mainly because the company wanted to work with Bandai Namco.

“We always want to be a third-party publisher regardless of how successful our games are,” Hartmann told The Verge.

“Just from a portfolio perspective, you can have different genres, entertain different types of players, and have an opportunity to find new people you wouldn’t find internally,” he added.

Blue Protocol executive producer Sokichi Shimooka said that one of the advantages of working with Amazon is the “transmedia opportunities”.

Barty awarded Australian sport’s highest honour

0

Retired tennis star Ashleigh Barty has been awarded Australian sport’s highest individual honor for a second time.

At the annual Sport Australia Hall of Fame event on Thursday night Barty became the third person to win The Don Award — named after cricket great Don Bradman — multiple times.

Entering 2022 as the world No. 1, Barty in January became the first homegrown Australian Open singles champion since 1978.

Less than two months later, the three-time Grand Slam champion announced her shock retirement from tennis at the age of 25, reports Xinhua. “This year was certainly my most enjoyable Australian Open, result aside, that had nothing to do with it. It felt free. I played without consequence, I played like a little kid,” Barty said on Thursday night.

“In my eyes, there was no pressure. It was just about me trying to redeem myself, in a way, and playing how I’d always wanted to play – go out there and play like the kid that fell in love with the sport.”

Barty described the decision to retire as her “perfect ending”, shutting down suggestions she could return to the court.

The Don is awarded to the athlete or team that most inspired Australia through their performance and example.

Barty, who previously won in 2019, joins Olympic gold medalists Steve Hooker and Sally Pearson as multiple winners.

Middle and long distance runner Ron Clarke, who set 17 world records in a highly decorated career, and Shane Warne, widely regarded as one of the greatest bowlers in the history of cricket, who died in March aged 52, were posthumously elevated to legend status in the hall of fame.

Amazon to bring TikTok-like feed of shoppable content

0

With an aim to generate more engagement on its platform, e-commerce giant Amazon has announced that it will bring a TikTok-like feed of shoppable content named ‘Inspire’ to its application.

‘Inspire’ is the company’s attempt to get users to make purchases as they see products in online content, reports The Verge.

The new feed option will appear as a lightbulb icon in the application and will roll out to select US users this month.

The e-commerce giant has also been recruiting influencers to create videos for the feed.

Inspire tab will allow shoppers to select from categories such as interior design, pets, and skincare.

The videos and photos will include links to Amazon products that can be directly purchased, the report said.

In August, the company was reportedly testing a TikTok-like vertical photo and video feed in its app internally.

“We are constantly testing new features to help make the customers’ lives a little easier,” an Amazon spokesperson had said.

US universities add policies banning caste discrimination

0

The Ivy League Brown University has become the latest US institution of higher education to take action against caste discrimination, joining California State, Harvard, and other universities that have targeted the practice.

Brown University announced this month that it was explicitly adding caste to categories like religion, sexual orientation, and color in its institution-wide non-discrimination policy.

The University’s Vice President for Institutional Equity and Diversity, Sylvia Carey-Butler, asserted that as the South Asian population in the US increases, caste discrimination is a growing issue on college and university campuses.

“Our nondiscrimination policies exist to ensure we’re protecting people and to ensure the University environment is free of hurt and harm,” she said.

A group of students who helped research the issue said that the addition of caste to the policy “provides a framework for reporting incidents” of discrimination, according to the university.

Brown University avoided any mention of Hinduism or India and its statement only mentions caste as a practice in South Asia.

Carey-Butler said that Brown, with an enrolment of about 10,000 in Providence, Rhode Island State, is the first Ivy League university to specifically ban caste discrimination across the board.

Last year, Harvard University’s contract with the Graduate Students Union added caste as a “protected category”, meaning that its members cannot be discriminated against based on caste status, but it is not a university-wide policy.

Brandeis, a highly regarded university that originated in the Jewish community’s struggle against discrimination, likely became 2019 the first major US university to add caste to its anti-discrimination policy.

In January, the California State University (CSU) System with 23 institutions added caste to its non-discrimination policy under the “race or ethnicity” category and that has been challenged in a federal court by two professors of Indian origin who asserted that anti-discrimination policy itself amounts to discrimination against Indian origin and Hindu staff and students.

Sunil Kumar and Praveen Sinha said that they “fully and vehemently oppose all forms of prejudice and discrimination” butA “we simply cannot abide by a misguided policy”.

Executive Director Suhag Shukla and Managing Director Samir Kalra of the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) asserted that the CSU policy violates the US constitution’s protection for religious freedom and for ensuring due process and equal protection for all under the law.

Although the non-discriminatory policy makes no mention of Hinduism, the professors’ lawsuit maintains that by relying on resolutions by faculty and student bodies that mention the religion, CSU tries to illegally define Hindu religion and incorrectly asserts that the religion mandates a racist and discriminatory caste system.

One of those who advocated for the addition of caste in the CSU anti-discrimination, Prem Pariyar, is from Nepal.

In India and among the diaspora, other religions including Christianity also practice the caste system.

Equality Labs, a US organization that opposes caste discrimination, said in a report that one in three Dalit students here reported being discriminated against during their education and that one in two Dalits and one in four Shudras “lived in fear of being aouted” about their caste.

Equality Labs in a statement congratulated Brown University for including caste in its anti-discrimination policy and said the anti-caste “movement continues to expand as caste-oppressed students, faculty, and staff stand up and demand an end to caste-based discrimination”.

CSU also included a similar anti-discrimination provision in its contract with the faculty association.

US, Russia exchange jailed basketball star for arms dealer

0

In a major development, Washington and Moscow have conducted a prisoner swap, exchanging US basketball star Brittney Griner for convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, held in an American prison for 12 years.

Griner, the 32-year-old championship-winning player with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury who for years played for a Russian basketball team in the WNBA’s off-season, had been held in the country since February after she was arrested on drug possession charges at a Moscow airport, reports media.

Meanwhile, Bout, popularly known as the “merchant of death”, has reached Moscow, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement on Friday.

US President Joe Biden’s administration had proposed a prisoner exchange in July, the BBC reported.

Thursday night’s elaborate swap involved two private planes bringing Griner and Bout to Abu Dhabi airport from Moscow and Washington, and then flying them home.

Footage on Russian state media showed them crossing on the tarmac with their respective teams.

Speaking in the Oval Office, Griner’s wife Cherelle praised the efforts of the Biden administration in securing her release and said: “I’m just standing here overwhelmed with emotions.”

Also addressing the media at the Oval Office, President Biden said that “she’s safe. She’s on a plane. She’s on her way home”.

“After months of being unjustly detained in Russia, held under intolerable circumstances, Brittney will soon be back in the arms of her loved ones, and she should have been there all along.

“This is a day we’ve worked toward for a long time. We never stopped pushing for her release,” he said.

Biden also thanked the United Arab Emirates (UAE) “for helping us facilitate Brittney’s return”. “I’m glad to say Brittney’s in good spirits… she needs time and space to recover,” he added.

Bout’s release comes after Biden signed an order for his release, commuting his 25-year jail term, in a direct swap for Griner.

In remarks to the media after landing in Moscow, Bout said that “in the middle of the night they simply woke me up and said ‘Get your things together’ and that was it”, reports the BBC.

Bout’s lawyer, Alexei Tarasov, told Russian media that from the start the US wanted two of its citizens –Griner and former marine Paul Whelan — returned, and the Foreign Ministry in Moscow complained that “Washington categorically refused to engage in dialogue”.

Bout sold arms to warlords and rogue governments, becoming one of the world’s most wanted men.

His secretive career was brought to an end by an elaborate US sting operation in 2008 when he was arrested at a hotel in Bangkok.

He was extradited two years later and has spent the past 12 years languishing in an American jail for conspiring to support terrorists and kill Americans.

Meanwhile, Whelan, who continues to be imprisoned in Russia since 2018 on spying charges, told CNN that he was “greatly disappointed” more had not been done to free him, as he had carried out no crime. “I don’t understand why I’m still sitting here,” he said.

Nearly a million immigrants became US citizens in FY 2022

0

Nearly one million immigrants obtained US citizenship during the fiscal year 2022 — the highest number of naturalized citizens in almost 15 years, according to a US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) report.

USCIS completed processing 1,075,700 naturalization applications and administered the oath of allegiance to 967,400 new US citizens during the year that ended September 30.

The number rose to 1,023,200 immigrants when considering children.

The top five countries of birth of immigrants who became naturalized US citizens in the fiscal year 2022 were Mexico, India, the Philippines, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic, according to the USCIS data.

The immigrants who either have been green card holders (permanent residents) for 3-5 years or meet various military service requirements are eligible for US citizenship.

The processing time, from the time you file your citizenship application to when you attend the oath of allegiance ceremony, is between 18.5-24 months.

The current government filing fee for naturalization applications is $725, including $640 for processing and $85 for biometrics services. Military applicants are exempt from both fees.

Immigrants with US citizenship are allowed to vote in federal elections, be eligible for candidacy in US elections, have greater access to government assistance programs, like Medicare, sponsor relatives seeking permanent residency, and ensure automatic US citizenship for children.

According to government data, USCIS oversaw more than 8.7 million immigration cases as on June 30 — from green card applications to asylum requests and work permit petitions.

“Every immigration case entrusted to us represents an individual or a family seeking to build a better life in the US,” said USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou.

“We have made measurable progress towards building a more humane immigration system… There is more work to do, especially to reduce processing times for all people we serve, and congressional support is critical to achieving our ambitious backlog reduction goals in the year ahead.”

In the coming months, USCIS plans to build on this progress by implementing premium processing for all petitions for immigrant workers and certain employment authorization applications for students and exchange visitors.

It hopes to establish a permanent biometrics exemption for all applicants for change of non-immigrant status and extension of non-immigrant stay. Several common forms, including the applications for employment authorization, adjustment of status, and naturalization will be simplified, the USCIS stated.

I-League: Aizawl FC beat NEROCA FC 1-0

0

Aizawl FC defeated NEROCA FC 1-0 in a sixth-round match of the I-League 2022-23 at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, here on Thursday.

A second-half header from Japanese defender Akito Saito proved enough for the hosts, who saw more of the exchanges, to take full points home.

The game began on a fast note with Aizawl having an edge over NEROCA. The hosts enjoyed the majority of the possession in the early minutes of the game but didn’t find any goalscoring opportunities. R Lalthanmawia went closest in the sixth minute when the winger cut inside from the left, beating his marker in the process to shoot, but his effort didn’t produce the required result.

Midway through the first half, the game burst into life as Aizawl created three back-to-back chances. In the 24th minute, Lalthanmawia on the left wing dribbled past his marker and put a cross inside the six-yard area for R Ramdinthara, who failed to control the ball.

A minute later, Lalchhanhima Sailo passed the ball to K Lalrinfela on top of the penalty area and rolled the ball back into Sailo’s way. However, the midfielder’s shot was saved by NEROCA custodian Soram Poirei Anganba.

At the half-hour mark, Ramdinthara played Sailo on the right wing, who crossed it for Henry Kisekka at the near post. But the Ugandan put his header wide. On the other hand, two minutes later, Jourdaine Fletcher took a free kick following a foul on Aimol Reamsochung. The Jamaican’s powerful strike did rattle the crossbar but wasn’t enough to fetch him a goal.

With just a minute left in the first half, Kisekka put the ball into the net but before he could celebrate, the referee called for a foul as the Ugandan had pushed NEROCA’s center-back Thokchom James Singh in the process.

After the restart, the hosts again took charge of the proceedings, this time building attacks from the left. fullback Zodingliana Ralte twice created good chances for Ramdinthara inside the box. The forward put his header off target on the first occasion, while failing to make the necessary connection on the next one.

Henry Kisekka helped his team create multiple chances with Ramdinthara and Lalrinfela making constant inroads behind the striker.

At the hour mark, Kisekka shielded the ball before passing it for substitute Matias Veron inside the 18-yard box. The Argentine pulled the trigger but his shot was blocked for a corner. The resultant set-piece taken by Lalthanmawia was thumped into the net by Aizawl’s Japanese defender Akito Saito.

NEROCA launched a series of attacks in the final minutes of the game with Lunminlen Haokip going close in the 89th minute. Aizawl’s Sailo fouled the substitute Tangva Ragui and NEROCA substitute Nonganba Singh Akoijam’s freekick reached Haokip near the rival goal but the striker couldn’t keep his shot on target as the People’s Club walked off with three points.

After this match, Aizawl FC moved to sixth place in the points table with eight points from six games. NEROCA are currently eighth in the table with six points from as many matches.

PKL: Tamil Thalaivas’ campaign in season 9 will be inspirational for young players, says coach Ashan Kumar

0

The Tamil Thalaivas, led by Ajinkya Pawar, put on quite the show for their fans, closing out the fifth playoff berth in Season 9 of vivo Pro Kabaddi League when they registered a comprehensive 43-28 win against the UP Yoddhas, who have also made their reservations for Mumbai. It was Tamil Thalaivas’ tenth win in 21 matches alongside 4 ties and 7 defeats.

“We are very happy to have qualified for the playoffs, and also with the manner in which we have managed to do so. We have won a good number of matches within a limited time period and made the playoffs, which is historic. I hope this will also be an inspiration to all young players coming up that if you don’t lose hope if you keep at your training and keep giving your best, you will definitely succeed,” said coach Ashan Kumar.

Meanwhile captain Ajinkya Pawar said, “This was an important match for us and we just went about doing things the way the coach had instructed us.” After recovering from a poor run of form initially, the Tamil Thalaivas have looked like a very confident side, “We never felt scared or nervous really, the team knows that we have the coach’s backing and his motivation,” he added.

“We have been affected by injuries and without delving into it too much, we have tried to replace the player to fit the requirements, even though the players are all different in their own ways. And as a coach it is my responsibility to be able to help the players and team in such difficult situations,” the coach said.

The Gujarat Giants have been in impressive form in recent weeks with Parteek Dahiya leading the way, scoring plenty of points in every outing. However, they will be up against the mighty Jaipur Pink Panthers, who have the ace raider Arjun Deshwal leading the attack with great aplomb, on Friday. Can the resurgent Gujarat Giants land another mighty blow?

In the second game, the Puneri Paltan come up against the UP Yoddhas, with both teams having secured a playoff berth. Nonetheless, Puneri Paltan with Fazel Atrachali leading the pack will want to keep the momentum going with the big scalp of Pardeep Narwal and UP Yoddhas.

Indian team in right hands; Hrishikesh sir brings in a lot of experience, says skipper Harmanpreet Kaur

0

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur quashed claims that former head coach Ramesh Powar was moved to the NCA due to differences with players and added that the side is in the right hands with Hrishikesh Kanitkar now joining in as batting coach.

On Tuesday, Kanitkar was made the women’s team batting coach with Powar appointed as the spin bowling coach at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Kanitkar, who coached India U19 to the World Cup title early this year in West Indies, had been with the women’s team during their white-ball tour of Sri Lanka in June-July and was also the batting coach of men’s team on the tour of New Zealand in November.

“Well, nothing of that kind. I have always enjoyed working with Ramesh sir whenever I have had the opportunity. As a team, we have improved a lot (under him). We have learned a lot from him. It’s a BCCI decision that he has moved to the NCA now, where he will work as the spin coach. Whenever we will be at the NCA, sir is always available.”

“Hrishi (Hrishikesh Kanitkar) sir is here with us. We had a very good experience with him in Sri Lanka. Whenever we were at the NCA, he was always available. Hrishi sir brings in a lot of experience for the team and we’re only looking forward to how to take this team ahead. I think we are in the right hands. Whatever decision the BCCI is taking, we’re fully okay with that,” said Harmanpreet on the eve of the first T20I against Australia at D.Y. Patil Stadium.

Harmanpreet remarked that Kanitkar brought a sense of calmness to the team during their tour of Sri Lanka, especially in crunch situations. “He’s very calm and we needed someone who can give us that calmness on the field because in the past, during crucial situations, you must have seen that the girls needed support and guide with calmness to tell what to do and how to do and there should be clear thoughts.”

“In Sri Lanka, we experienced that side of Hrishi sir. When we heard that he will be the coach for the Australia series and even beyond that, there was positivity in the team. We really liked the way he worked with us in Sri Lanka.”

Harmanpreet also explained how Kanitkar helped them in taking the side out of tough circumstances, citing the third ODI against Sri Lanka at Pallekele in July, where she and Pooja Vastrakar had made the fifties and shared a 97-run stand for the seventh wicket to carry India to 255/9 and eventually, a 39-run victory.

“I remember there was a partnership between me and Pooja (Vastrakar, out of Australia series due to injury), that partnership was so crucial and because of it, we could post a decent total. The things which we discussed with him, and executing them within one or two games, those things matter a lot. All the girls had worked alongside him and everyone was happy, impressed by the way he was presenting things to us.”

“He helped us in terms of how to execute plans and which players would take the responsibility in which and what situations. There were times during ODI matches on that tour when we lost early wickets, but we bounced back and scored big totals like 250. He helped us in understanding how to bat in those circumstances.”

With the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa less than two months away, the timing of moving Powar to NCA came as a surprise, even though it wasn’t the first instance of such happening on the Indian women’s side.

In 2017, just a few months before the ODI World Cup in England, Purnima Rau was sacked and Tushar Arothe was brought in as the head coach. Even though the team went on to be the runners-up and got limelight, the timing of changing head coaches did bring in some criticism.

Now, with the position of head coach vacant, Harmanpreet didn’t put much attention to it and believed the team won’t have difficulty in adjusting to Kanitkar’s clarity and style of coaching due to his previous familiarity with the side.

“When we were there with Hrishi sir in Sri Lanka, we got to clear a lot of things as a batting unit, because we had some targets. We discussed with him how to achieve our targets and we spoke about setting those small targets, where he also brought out his experiences of achieving those targets.”

“Had there been a new coach, it could have been a little bit difficult. But since we have worked with Hrishi sir in the past, I don’t think there will be any problems. If a new person comes in, you need to explain a lot of things like how we work and wish to take things forward. But Hrishi sir already knows how we work, so there won’t be many changes.”

Cyber criminals issue fake ration cards by breaching J’khand govt’s system

Cybercriminals in Jharkhand issued thousands of fake ration cards by hacking the official IDs of Supply Officers of six districts of the state.

Under the Ration Card Management System (RCMS), the supply officers of all the districts have the ID of the departmental portal, through which they issue new ration cards, change the nature of the card and correct the names of card holders.

It is feared that cybercriminals have misused the ID on a large scale.

The state headquarters blocked all the RCMS IDs after receiving information about the incident. Preparations are underway to register FIRs in these cases.

According to sources in the food supply department, the IDs of District Supply Officers (DSOs) in Deoghar, Hazaribagh, Giridih, Seraikela Kharsawan, Pakur, and Garhwa were hacked. It is reported that about 2,500 ration cards were made in Deoghar.

Earlier, more than a thousand Green ration cards were converted into Priority Household (PHH) cards by hacking the ID of Hazaribagh DSO. Similarly, more than 2,500 fake ration cards were issued in the Giridih district.

The state headquarters has sought information from the Supply Officers of all the districts regarding misuse of the online system in issuing ration cards.

After acquiring information about the irregularities, issuing new ration cards has been banned in the state at present.

Preliminary investigation revealed that most of the cards were generated after 8 p.m. The department has contacted cyber and IT experts to repair the breach.

Earlier, the incidence of hundreds of fake birth and death certificates were created by breaking into the Civil Registration System (CRS) portal developed by the Central Government in several districts of Jharkhand, which came to light. No cybercriminal could be traced in these cases.

Ranveer oozes energy in ‘Current Laga Re’ track from Rohit Shetty’s ‘Cirkus’

The song ‘Current Laga Re’ from the upcoming Ranveer Singh-starrer ‘Cirkus’ was launched on Thursday at a multiplex in the Andheri area of Mumbai.

The song, which has the potential to become a superhit and to play at parties during the holiday season, has been composed jointly by Lijo George and DJ Chetas. It features Ranveer’s wife Deepika Padukone in a special appearance donning Tamil ethnic wear. Ranveer as usual is at his energetic best as he can lend a whole different vibe to the song with his moves.

It starts off with a traditional Tamil melody on the lines of ‘Titli’ from the Deepika-starrer 2013 release ‘Chennai Express’. It then progresses into a full-blown dance number with thumping beats arranged over a Tamil folk percussion pattern.

The Tamil influences are visible with the use of words like ‘lungi’ in the lyrics, a prominent nadaswaram section, and of course the Tamil rap lyrics penned by Hari. The song has been crooned by Nakash Aziz who has tracks like ‘Saree Ke Fall Sa’, ‘Radio’, ‘Tukur Tukur’, and several others to his credit. Dhvani Bhanushali, Jonita Gandhi, and Lijo George have also lent their voices to the song.

‘Cirkus’ directed by Rohit Shetty is releasing in cinemas on December 23, 2022.
