Smriti Mandhana is one of my favourite left-handers to watch, says Australia’s Phoebe Litchfield

0

Australia’s teenage batting sensation Phoebe Litchfield lavished rich praise on India vice-captain and left-handed opener Smriti Mandhana for sharing batting insights during last year’s Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), calling her “one of her favorite left-handers to watch.”

Phoebe, who hails from Orange city in New South Wales, has been carrying the badge of ‘next big thing’ in Australian women’s cricket since she was 16, and became the youngest batter to hit a half-century in the WBBL in 2019.

Her path with Smriti crossed during the 2021/22 season of the WBBL when the India opener represented Sydney Thunder, making 377 runs while Phoebe, her fellow left-handed batter made 263 runs.

“Smriti was awesome to play with. She is a class above. As a lefty, I learned a lot from her. She sort of helped me through those innings. I definitely made the most of her (time) over there (and) picked her brains. I am actually excited to catch up with her, potentially over here. She’s one of my favorite left-handers to watch,” she said to reporters in Mumbai ahead of the five-match series starting on December 9.

Phoebe elaborated on how helpful Smriti helped her with knowledge of building together an innings. “She actually gave me one of her bats at the end of the series. I used that and it was a peach! (The chat with her was around) just batting insights and around how to go about a game. Sometimes you shank some, sometimes you go well. You’ve got to stick in there and really put an innings together. She helped me with that.”

While admitting that she is still getting used to batting in Indian conditions, Phoebe, who has played for Australia U19 and ‘A-sides, thinks her role in the Australian side could be to fill the big void left by the retirement of senior cricketer Rachael Haynes.

“I am like-for-like for Rach (Rachael) – as in a top-order, middle-order batter, lefty and a fielder. I guess that’s the spot that is free in the Aussie set-up. But I am not looking for anything at the moment and just relishing the time in the group and learning everything I can.”

“It wasn’t the greatest hit on these spinny, slow wickets. But it’s my first hit in the subcontinent. It is not going to be perfect but it was lots of fun batting with Midge (Australia captain Alyssa Healy), who was smacking it down at the other end while I was struggling to get off the mark.”

Being branded as the next big thing in the Australian cricket circuit brings a lot of pressure, especially being constantly under the spotlight, which brings a certain chance of being one’s very harsh critic too.

Phoebe admitted talk about her bright potential has added more pressure on her and is trying to manage her emotions as a young cricketer, but once she steps on the field, she keeps all the outside talk aside.

“I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t cross my mind. The pressure of scoring runs always plays on the mind and especially as a young person with the media going, ‘oh you’re the next big thing’ and I’m hoping that I don’t go anywhere. But as soon as I hop on the field it disappears, which is nice, and I just focus on scoring runs and having fun.”

“I think I’ve improved a lot as a batter, both with my power, but also just learning how to read the game and setting up innings. Then I think my temperament has definitely improved from a silly 16-year-old. I’ve been learning how to manage those emotions out in the middle in those pressured situations.”

An international cricket debut will be a dream come true for Phoebe, but for now, she is enjoying her time in the Australian set-up and soaking in all the learnings which could help her in the future.

“(To debut for Australia) would mean the world. Playing for Australia has been my dream for so long and if I get the call up that’d be awesome … but I’m not expecting too much.”

“I guess that’s the spot that’s free in the Aussie set-up (in the middle-order), but I’m not looking for anything at the moment and I’m just relishing the time in the group and learning everything I can.”

Ruling BJP all set to invite PM, other bigwigs for poll campaign in K’taka

The Karnataka BJP, in an upbeat mood, after post-poll surveys indicated victory in the assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, is all set to invite party bigwigs to the state for campaigning.

Assembly elections in Karnataka are scheduled tentatively before May 2023.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will discuss the development and national security, whereas Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath would focus on Hindutva during the campaigning, said sources.

The party has planned a series of public meetings of the central leaders as the Shri Rama Sena has announced that it would ensure the defeat of the BJP in the assembly elections.

Party insiders confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being invited to the inauguration of the Metro Phase II project in Bengaluru soon. PM Modi, who was in Bengaluru to inaugurate the Kempe Gowda International Airport Terminal 2 recently, has agreed to come again, sources said.

The 15-kilometre-long Metro route between Byappanahalli and Whitefield, which connects tech hub ITPL to the central business district, is much sought after by commuters.

This development and Modi’s appeal would boost the prospects of the BJP in the state, say, insiders. Party sources say that Yogi Adityanath would tour three coastal districts and the southern part of Karnataka.

The central leaders would tour with former CM Yediyurappa while others would focus on the north Karnataka region.

UP is a model for the whole world: Melinda Gates

Melinda Gates, Co-founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), said on Wednesday that Uttar Pradesh is not just a model for India, but for the entire world.

Melinda Gates met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at the latter’s official residence on Wednesday and discussed enhancing technical cooperation in the fields of health, nutrition, and agriculture.

After the meeting, Adityanath tweeted, “Had a wonderful meeting with co-chair and trustee of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation at my official residence in Lucknow today. We had a fruitful discussion regarding better technical cooperation in the fields of health, nutrition, social security, and agriculture in UP.”

During the meeting, Gates lauded the work done by the Uttar Pradesh government in recent years, underlining the Covid management and encephalitis control despite a dense population.

“Amid the challenges of Covid, the way the state leadership tackled the issue of dense population and various social challenges is highly commendable,” she said. “Uttar Pradesh is a model not only for India but for the whole world,” she said.

Gates also congratulated women’s self-help groups (SHGs) for the success of the nutrition mission and praised the efforts being made to increase the income of farmers by promoting the formation of FPOs in the largest agricultural state of the country.

The Chief Minister said that he has closely seen the works of the BMGF, which has made a commendable contribution to the field of health and nutrition. Uttar Pradesh received logistics and technical support from the Foundation amid the challenges of Covid.

The Chief Minister said, “Uttar Pradesh has achieved satisfactory success in health and nutrition in recent years. About 95 percent of the deaths of innocent children caused by a disease like encephalitis have been controlled. Besides, the Foundation has cooperated with us for effective control of communicable diseases like Chikungunya and Kala-azar. We have received good cooperation from global organizations such as UNICEF, WHO, BMGF, and PATH in the field of public health, including in controlling various waterborne diseases such as encephalitis, as well as Covid management.”

Jagan calls BCs ‘backbone classes’ at massive outreach conclave

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy said on Wednesday that BCs are not backward classes but they are the ‘backbone classes’ of the society.

In a massive outreach to the BCs, the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) organized a massive conclave ‘Jayaho BC Mahasabha’.

In what is claimed to be the first of its kind gathering, over one lakh BC leaders of YSRCP from all 175 Assembly constituencies and public representatives of the party from ministers to village heads participated in the conclave.

Leaders and representatives of 139 BCs participated in the Mahasabha, where the chief minister highlighted his government’s various welfare measures for the BC community.

He revealed that the government has disbursed Rs 1,63,000 crore to the BC community through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and Non-DBT methods in the last three years.

Through DBT alone, Rs 86,000 crore was distributed to the people.

“We have taken steps to empower every sector. Of the total expenditure of Rs 3,19,227 crore spent by the government in the last 3 years under DBT & Non-DBT (for all the schemes), Rs 2,50,357 crore or 80 percent of the total amount has been spent for the SCs/STs/BCs and minorities,” he said.

Coming down heavily on Leader of Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu, the chief minister said TDP went to court to stall the housing scheme and English medium in schools.

“To ensure self-respect in all areas, we brought in three capitals but they went to court against that as well. Ours’ is a social justice party, TDP is social injustice party,” Jagan Mohan Reddy said.

The chief minister recalled that in 2014, Chandrababu Naidu had made 114 promises to BCs but he did not fulfill 10 of them.

Jagan said while Chandrababu Naidu did not send even one BC member to Rajya Sabha between 2014-2018, YSRCP sent four BCs to Rajya Sabha, and in the state legislative council out of the 32 MLCs, 18 are from the BC community.

“The Assembly speaker is from the BC community, the Council Chairman is from the SC community and the council deputy chairman is from the minority.

“Our government has empowered BCs, SCs, STs, and minorities even in the cabinet. 11 BC MLAs have been made ministers in this government and if you combine BCs, SC, STs, and minorities, the government has given 70 percent of the ministries to them,” he said.

Jagan claimed that the YSRCP government fulfilled the promises made in 2019. He announced that the BC Corporation will be constituted. The government has already formed 56 corporations.

“Permanent BC commission has been established as promised. This is the first in the country. In nominated posts, temple boards, and Agri marketing committees, our government has given 50 percent reservation for BC, SC, ST, and minorities. In the nominated contract works, we have promised 50 percent of the work to BC, SC, ST, and Minorities. We announced this by bringing an Act in the first assembly session,” he said.

For those not into traditional business, YSRCP promised welfare schemes for them. The government brought Jagananna Thodu and Cheythodu.

He pointed out that under the TDP rule, the government was spending only Rs 35,000 as fee reimbursement and the rest was borne by the parents. But now, the government is paying 100 of the fees.

YSRCP government also paid the fee reimbursement arrears of the previous govt. As of now, the government has spent Rs 9,052 crore on Jagananna Vidya Deevana.

Hostel and Mess charges have been taken care of by Jagananna Vasathi de event. The government has so far spent Rs 3,349 crore on this scheme.

IND v BAN, 2nd ODI: Mehidy’s 83-ball unbeaten hundred, Mahmudullah’s 77 carry Bangladesh to 271/7

0

Mehidy Hasan Miraz turned out to be India’s nemesis for the second time in as many matches by scoring an unbeaten 83-ball century while veteran batter Mahmudullah made a fine 77 to carry Bangladesh to a respectable 271/7 in 50 overs in their second ODI against India at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur on Wednesday.

Bangladesh was in tatters at 69/6 in 19 overs as the top order failed to fire again. But Mehidy and Mahmudullah joined forces to bail the hosts out of trouble. The duo put on a marathon stand of 148 runs off 165 balls for the seventh wicket to lead an absolutely stunning recovery for Bangladesh.

Coupled with Nasum Ahmed’s 18 not out, Bangladesh made 68 runs in the last five overs as India’s bowling lost the plot for the second time in the series. Their matters were made worse by injury concerns to captain Rohit Sharma and Deepak Chahar.

Mehidy began by cutting Washington Sundar through backward point, while Mahmudullah had luck on his side when the top edge flew over a leaping keeper off Mohammed Siraj. The duo rotated the strike well while hitting the loose balls for boundaries.

Mehidy hit boundaries behind square mostly and even took on Sundar by dancing down the pitch to hit over long-on for six. He went on to employ the cut and slog-sweep to perfection against Axar Patel’s left-arm spin.

Mahmudullah joined the party by hitting Umran Malik for boundaries over mid-off and mid-on, followed by Mehidy completing his third ODI fifty. Four overs later, Mahmudullah also completed his half-century, signaling a return to form.

Mehidy began the last 10-overs phase with a nick off Shardul Thakur going to the third man rope, while Mahmudullah drove on the up, swat-pulled, and whipped off his wrists against the pacers. The partnership ended when Malik rushed Mahmudullah with a quick short ball, which the right-hander tried to slash and was caught behind by a diving keeper.

Nasum maintained the attacking tempo by carting Malik over mid-off for successive boundaries while Mehidy got a top edge over the keeper’s head to make it three boundaries off the 47th over.

Nasum continued his onslaught when he cleanly lofted Siraj over his head for six, while Mehidy punched in the gap between mid-off and extra cover, drove off the front foot, and scooped Malik for three boundaries in the 49th over.

In the final over, Mehidy shuffled across to beautifully slog Thakur over the backward square leg fence for six, followed by heaving him high over deep mid-wicket for another maximum. He reached his maiden ODI century in 83 balls with a single to long-on on the last ball of the innings, with the crowd giving him a rousing standing ovation.

Earlier, Siraj got the ball to talk a lot though he conceded two boundaries and almost had Haque caught if Rohit hadn’t dropped the catch at second slip, causing him to leave the field after a blow on his left thumb.

But Haque was dismissed on the very next ball, trapped plumb lbw by Siraj with the one that came back in sharply. Siraj had another success in the first ten overs when he castled Das through the gate with a beautiful inswinger.

Malik was searingly quick in his first over, banging Shakib Al Hasan on his head, and then hitting again on the side of his back. He then came up with jaffa of a delivery to send Najmul Hossain Shanto’s off-stump on a cartwheel ride.

Shakib’s scratchy stay came to an end when he miscued a slog-sweep to juggling short third man off Sundar. In his next over, Sundar got a turn and bounce to take Mushfiqur Rahim’s glove edge to leg-slip.

On the very next ball, he beat Afif Hossain with a slider coming back in and uprooting off-stump. But from there, Mehidy, Mahmudullah, and Nasum led a stunning recovery for Bangladesh, leaving India in trouble at the mid-point of the innings.

Brief scores: Bangladesh 271/7 in 50 overs (Mehidy Hasan Miraz 100 not out, Mahmudullah 77; Washington Sundar 3/37, Umran Malik 2/58) against India.

IND v BAN, 2nd ODI: Rohit Sharma sent to hospital for X-ray after suffering blow to left thumb

0

India skipper Rohit Sharma has been sent to hospital for an X-ray after suffering a blow to his left thumb while fielding in the ongoing second ODI against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur, Dhaka, on Wednesday.

Rohit suffered the injury in the second over when he attempted to take a catch at the second slip of Anamul Haque off pacer Mohammed Siraj. Siraj pitched the length ball outside the off-stump and Haque hung his bat in the corridor without any footwork.

The ball went to Rohit, who could not hold on to it as the ball dipped on him, despite trying to get both hands to it. The ball hit his thumb, and he went off the field immediately for treatment, with Rajat Patidar coming in as a substitute fielder.

In his absence, vice-captain and wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul has taken over the captaincy duties. Haque was dismissed on the very next ball, trapped plumb lbw by Siraj with the one that came back in sharply.

Later on, TV commentators said on air that Rohit had been sent to hospital for an x-ray, which was also confirmed by the BCCI in an official update posted on their Twitter account. “India Captain Rohit Sharma suffered a blow to his thumb while fielding in the 2nd ODI. The BCCI Medical Team assessed him. He has now gone for scans.”

Earlier, the BCCI said fast bowler Kuldeep Sen, who was handed an international debut in the first ODI on Sunday, missed out on Wednesday’s match due to back stiffness and was replaced by Umran Malik in the playing eleven.

“Kuldeep Sen complained of back stiffness following the first ODI on Sunday. The BCCI Medical Team assessed him and advised him to rest. He was not available for selection for the 2nd ODI,” said the BCCI in a tweet.

IND v BAN, 2nd ODI: Axar, Umran come in for India as Bangladesh win toss, elect to bat first

0

Left-arm spin all-rounder Axar Patel and tearaway quick Umran Malik have been included in India’s playing eleven as Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first in the second ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur, Dhaka, on Wednesday.

Bangladesh is leading the three-match series 1-0 and will need to win Wednesday’s match to clinch the series. India needs to win the second ODI to force the series into a decider in the third match at Chattogram on December 10.

India skipper Rohit Sharma said Axar, who was unavailable for the first ODI, comes into the playing eleven for Shahbaz Ahmed, while Malik comes in for fast bowler Kuldeep Sen, who had picked two wickets in his international debut on Sunday. Rohit had said that Sen “is not available” for the second ODI, which is why Malik has come into the playing eleven.

An update from the BCCI said Sen complained of back stiffness following the first ODI, which India lost by one wicket. It added that the medical team assessed him and advised him to rest, thus ruling him out of selection for the second ODI.

“We have to play good cricket and I hope bowling first now, we can restrict them to a decent score and bat well. Going back to the drawing board and understanding how we need to play on these conditions, just the basic talk about what we need to do with the bat and how to handle certain bowlers. Had good training session yesterday, and hopefully, we can come out and replicate those learnings,” stated Rohit.

Bangladesh captain Litton Das said left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed comes in for fast bowler Hasan Mahmud in their playing eleven. “Looks like a good wicket, last game we saw it was difficult to bat in the second innings. The boys are pumped up for this contest.”

RBI hikes repo rate to 6.25%, 5th increase in a row

0

The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) monetary policy committee (MPC) on Wednesday hiked the repo rate by 35 basis points (bps) to 6.25 percent with immediate effect, Governor Shaktikanta Das announced.

It is the fifth straight rate hike by the central bank in this financial year. Prior to this, the RBI had raised the repo rate by 40 bps in an off-cycle meeting in May and 50 bps in June, August, and September.

The MPC raised the retail inflation forecast for October-December 2022 period to 6.6 percent from 6.5 percent.

The retail inflation forecast for January-March 2023 period was raised to 5.9 percent from 5.8 percent.

The MPC though retained the retail inflation forecast for the first quarter of 2023-24 at 5 percent and has kept it at 5.4 percent for the second quarter of FY24.

Striking an optimistic note on the rupee, Das said in his speech that the currency has appreciated by 3.2 percent during April-October in real terms, even as major currencies have depreciated.

“Rupee should be allowed to find its level,” he said.

FDI inflows rose to $22.7 billion from April to October 2022 from $21.3 billion in the corresponding period last year.

Slowing external demand weighing on India’s merchandise exports, he noted further.

“Size of our forex reserves is comfortable and has increased and they stand at $561.2 billion as on December 2,” Das informed.

Cybersecurity resilience top priority for Indian firms: Cisco

0

Cybersecurity resilience has emerged as the top priority for companies in India as they look to defend themselves against a rapidly evolving threat landscape.

Around 62 percent of these organizations say that the security incidents have impacted their business operations. This was revealed in the latest edition of Cisco’s annual study, ‘Security Outcomes Report’ launched on Wednesday in Melbourne.

Titled, ‘Security Outcomes Report, Volume 3: Achieving Security Resilience’, the study identifies the top seven success factors that boost enterprise security resilience, with a particular focus on the cultural, environmental, and solution-based factors that businesses leverage to achieve security. The findings are based on survey responses from over 4,700 participants across 26 countries.

Resilience has emerged as the top priority since a staggering 61.5 percent of organizations surveyed said they had experienced a security event that impacted business in the past two years. The leading types of incidents were network or data breaches (69.1 percent), network or system outages (55.3 percent), malicious insider abuse (50.4 percent), and accidental disclosure (47.2 percent).

These incidents resulted in severe repercussions for the companies that experienced them, along with the ecosystem of organizations they do business with. The leading impacts cited include IT and communications interruption, supply chain disruption, response and recovery costs, and lasting brand damage.

With stakes this high, it is no surprise that almost all executives (99 percent) surveyed for the report said that security resilience was a high priority for them. The findings further highlight that the main objectives of security resilience for the security leaders and their teams are to contain the spread or scope of security incidents, adapt to unexpected external change events or trends, and continue to mature and improve security capabilities.

“Digitization has been fast-tracked for several years, bringing new opportunities for people, businesses, and communities. However, to ensure that this progress is not delayed or derailed, it must be accompanied by a sharp focus on and investments in security. Their ability to anticipate, detect, respond to, and recover quickly from cyber threats and attacks will be at the heart of companies’ efforts to build resilience in a dynamic world,” said Samir Mishra, Director, of Security Business, Cisco India & SAARC.

“Security resilience allows companies to optimize their resources and prioritize areas that add the most value to their business today and are critical to their success in the future,” he added.

Meanwhile, the report said that the companies whose technology infrastructures are either mostly on-premise or mostly cloud-based had the highest, and nearly identical, security resilience scores. However, businesses that are in the initial stages of transitioning from an on-premise to a hybrid cloud environment saw scores drop between 8.5 and 14 percent depending on how difficult the hybrid environments were to manage.

Further, businesses reporting an excellent security culture scored 46 percent higher on average than those without. Globally, the companies that reported implementing a mature Zero Trust model saw a 30 percent increase in resilience score compared to those that had none.

“The Security Outcomes Reports are a study into what works and what doesn’t in cybersecurity. The ultimate goal is to cut through the noise in the market by identifying practices that lead to more secure outcomes for defenders,” said Jeetu Patel, executive vice president, and general manager of security and collaboration at Cisco.

“This year, we focus on identifying the key factors that elevate the security resilience of a business to among the very best in the industry,” said Patel.

Tubelight! Akshay Kumar’s first look from ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji’ film gets trolled

Fans of Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar may have another reason to rejoice, as his look from his upcoming Marathi movie ‘Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat was unveiled on Tuesday after he started the film shoot in Mumbai, but the first look is getting trolled because of one visible glitch.

The shot which tracks Akshay essaying Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj also shows a chandelier in the frame. Now, here’s the catch. The chandelier has light bulbs installed throughout its rim. The reason behind the trolling is that bulbs were invented much after the tenure of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who ruled from 1630 to 1680.

One user commented, “What was the cinematographer even thinking while lighting up that scene.” Another wrote, “The focus puller missed that by light’ years.”

Then there’s one user who wrote, “They’re making a period film and they messed up with the timeline. Some research would be good.”

The good thing is that the makers can take a cue from social media and rectify the mistake in production provided they are open to feedback from the audience for whom they’re making the film.
