Three-day Datta Jayanthi Utsav begins in K’taka; 3,500 cops deputed

0

Thousands of devotees swarmed the Chikkamaglur district of Karnataka on Tuesday as the three-day Datta Jayanthi celebrations kicked off at the controversial Bababudangiri-Datta Peeta.

Taking no chance with the security, the Karnataka police department deputed 3,500 police personnel to maintain law and order and peace in the district. The police have also established 46 check posts.

For the first time, as per the directions of the court, Hindu priests offered worship to Guru Dattatreya at a temple atop Bababudangiri hill. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal workers monitored the worship.

The government has appointed a priest after a long struggle by Hindu activists. The controversial site was often referred to as Karnataka’s Ayodhya.

Though the shrine symbolized the harmony of Hindus and Muslims, it went on to become a center of the crisis and struggle for over three decades. As per the court order, the government formed an eight-member management committee.

Opposition Congress had alleged that the committee had given a meager representation for Muslims. However, the ruling BJP did not bother to respond. The committee had proposed the appointment of Hindu priests and it was approved.

National General Secretary and BJP MLA C.T. Ravi, Bajrang Dal South Province Coordinator Raghu Sakaleshpur, and major Hindu activists are taking part in the Datta Jayanti.

Datta Peetha, the shrine in Chikkamagaluru has been a pilgrimage spot for both Hindus and Muslims. The BJP, however, is demanding that the site be declared a Hindu temple.

Before 1964, the shrine was revered by both Hindus and Muslims. It symbolized Sufi culture and the unity of Hindu and Islam cultures. The shrine was known as Shree Guru Dattatreya Bababudan Swamy Dargah. What was a pilgrimage spot for the two faiths has become a disputed site between Hindus and Muslims.

Hindus consider the hill to be the final resting place of Dattatreya, the Muslims believe the dargah is one of the earliest centers of Sufism in south India. They believe that Sufi saint Dada Hayat Mirkalandar has lived there for years.

Irrespective of the controversy, the local coffee planters before the harvest visit the shrine and offer worship. Fakir Bababudan, a Sufi saint of the 17th century from Yemen who settled in the shrine is credited with planting the first coffee seeds in the Indian sub-continent.

Demand for moderate rate hike by RBI voiced

0

With the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) expected to revise upwards the interest rate on Wednesday, industry players are voicing out for moderation.

The MPC has hiked the interest rate in recent times by 190 basis points (bps) to contain inflation.

According to Shishir Baijal, Chairman and Managing Director, Knight Frank India, out of a 190 bps repo rate hike, a 105 bps rise has already been transmitted in the marginal cost of funds-based lending rate ( MCLR).

“The mortgage rates have increased in line with the MCLR and the cumulative growth in residential sales in the last six months have understandably begun showing some signs of slowing,” Baijal said.

According to Baijal, the affordability of home buyers has also reduced by 10 percent since the beginning of this interest rate hike cycle.

Referring to the Q2 FY23 GDP print, Baijal said except for the service sector, degrowth was seen in most of the core sectors such as industry, manufacturing, and others.

“Hence, with inflation potentially showing signs of ebbing and growth concerns coming to the fore, we expect the RBI to hike its repo rate by a comparatively subdued 30-35 bps in the upcoming MPC meeting,” he added.

Industry lobby body Assocham recently made a similar request to RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das.

At most, the new rate hike should not exceed the 25-35 bps band, Assocham said in a letter to Das.

Several economists too have said the repo rate hike will be in the 25-35 bps band.

According to a report from the State Bank of India (SBI), the RBI rate hike will be in a smaller magnitude attuned to emerging market central banks and the overall rate-setting tone.

“A 35-bps repo rate hike looks imminent. We believe at 6.25 percent, it could be the terminal rate for now,” the SBI said.

“With a fall in commodity prices and some early signs of inflation coming down, the RBI may choose to slow down the pace of rate hikes. We expect the RBI to deliver a lower rate hike of 25 basis points in the upcoming meeting,” Pankaj Pathak, Fund Manager – Fixed Income, Quantum Mutual Fund said.

Monetary policy often works with a long lag. The impact of past rate hikes and liquidity tightening measures is yet to be seen. Thus, there is a risk of over-tightening the monetary policy and hurting growth recovery at a nascent stage, Pathak added.

Expecting the RBI to be more data-dependent and reactive going forward than raising rates pre-emptively, Pathak also said there is a strong case for the former to take a pause and allow the past rate hikes to work through the real economy.

Malaika Arora has a fear of mouthing dialogues

Diva Malaika Arora, who is currently seen in her reality show ‘Moving In With Malaika’ expresses her fear of mouthing dialogues.

The first episode of the series opens the doors to Malaika Arora’s strengths, weaknesses, and fears. She speaks her heart out about her fears and how she tries to overcome them one step at a time.

In a conversation with her manager Ekta, where she asks if Malaika was dodging a movie script because of her fear of acting.

Malaika says, “I am not dodging it… I am just not sure. Honestly, it’s not the fear of acting, but more about the discomfort I feel in mouthing dialogues. Standing up in front of people and actually being comfortable about emoting with dialogues is something I have always been a little apprehensive about. I get a little nervous about it… So that’s probably why I shy away from it.”

She adds: “Over the years there have been loads of scripts that I have seen and read but somewhere I’ve always stayed away. Well, that’s another fear of mine. Even in school, I used to hate when I had to mug up something and say it in public.

“I thought it was the most daunting task. I felt there was so much pressure, that it would make me feel very uneasy. I couldn’t eat, sleep or do anything if I had to learn something. So this fear of mine has just always been there.”

‘Moving in with Malaika’ is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.

West Indies pacer Cottrell relishing prospect of playing for Desert Vipers in ILT20

0

West Indies pace bowler Sheldon Cottrell is set to report for duty with the Desert Vipers in ILT20 and is relishing the prospect of playing in a top-class tournament.

Cottrell is no stranger to pressure having been snapped up for more than a million dollars by Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League 2019. The big left-armer is sure to be one of the hits of the new UAE-based T20 tournament.

Speaking about his experience of becoming a million-dollar player in the IPL in 2019 when signed by KXIP, Cottrell said, “That experience was wonderful, being a part of the IPL. Being a million-dollar man comes with its challenges, but I am the type of person who loves a challenge, and whatever comes my way I take it on.”

On how he dealt with the pressure of the million-dollar player deal, he said, “I was training for all this thirteen years ago when I was in the army, to be honest. I can take some of my military backgrounds and put it into cricket, where discipline and all the pressure are concerned. I bowl in the powerplay, and at the back-end so, so that is pressure for you and I am used to it. I relish every opportunity.”

On the appeal of the UAE and the ILT20, above all the other franchise leagues happening around the world in Australia, Bangladesh, and South Africa, he said, “It is a new tournament, and with new things comes a lot of excitement. When I heard about this, I was really excited, plus it is being played in the UAE. I spoke to my agent and said I really want to be there. And seeing how the management and staff have dealt with the players, it is really very professional.”

NASA’s Orion spacecraft on course to return to Earth on Dec 11

0

After a historic flyby just 128 km from the surface of the Moon, NASA’s Orion spacecraft is on course for its return to Earth on December 11.

The spacecraft made its second and final close approach to the Moon, just before its return powered flyby burn, passing about 128 kms above the lunar surface on Monday.

“Orion is heading home! Today the team achieved another momentous accomplishment, flying Orion just 128 km from the surface of the Moon. The lunar flyby enabled the spacecraft to harness the Moon’s gravity and slingshot it back toward Earth for splashdown,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

“When Orion re-enters Earth’s atmosphere in just a few days, it will come back hotter and faster than ever before — the ultimate test before we put astronauts on board. Next up, re-entry,” he added.

As soon as Orion splashes down, a team of divers, engineers, and technicians will depart the ship on small boats and arrive at the capsule.

Once there, they will secure it and prepare to tow it into the back of the ship, known as the good deck.

The divers will attach a cable to pull the spacecraft into the ship, called the winch line, and up to four additional tending lines to attach points on the spacecraft. The winch will pull Orion into a specially designed cradle inside the ship’s well deck and the other lines will control the motion of the spacecraft.

“Last week, we completed our final rehearsal with the USS Portland, which will be our recovery ship for Artemis I,” said Melissa Jones, landing and recovery director, at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

The uncrewed Orion spacecraft also surpassed the record set in 1970 by the crew on Apollo 13’s aborted mission to land on the Moon.

The spacecraft reached the farthest distance from Earth during the Artemis I mission — 268,563 miles (432,210 km) from our home planet.

The earlier record was set during the Apollo 13 mission at 248,655 miles (400,171 km) from Earth.

Framework deal signed in Sudan to end political stalemate

0

Sudan’s military and civilian leaders have signed a political framework agreement to end the political impasse and institute a two-year transitional authority.

Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, incumbent President and Commander-In-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commander of the Rapid Support Forces, signed the deal on Monday on behalf of the military, reports Xinhua news agency.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Forces of the Freedom and Change Alliance, the Revolutionary Front, other political organizations, workers’ unions, and civil society organizations signed the agreement on behalf of the political forces.

The agreement determines four levels for the transitional authority, including the legislative council, the sovereign council, the council of ministers, and the judicial councils and independent commissions.

The deal indicated that the parties which signed the political declaration, are to select, through consultation, a limited civil sovereign council to represent the head of the state and be a symbol of sovereignty.

The deal indicated that these forces will also negotiate to select a prime minister, who will then form a cabinet.

The agreement also pledged to organize a comprehensive, credible, transparent, and fair electoral process at the end of the transitional period.

Al-Burhan, when addressing the signing ceremony, vowed that the military establishment would exit the political process and support the democratic transition until reaching the general election.

He stressed the need to reform the Sudanese Armed Forces to make them a constitutional institution that is subject to the constitution and maintains neutrality without politicization or partisanship.

Al-Wathiq Al-Briar, the representative of the Forces of Freedom and Change Alliance, said the signed deal “establishes for a civilian rule and for completing the tasks of glorious December Revolution”.

The draft establishes a constitutional framework to govern the country during the transitional period and provides for the formation of a civilian-led government and a council to run national security and defense affairs.

Sudan has been suffering a political crisis since Al-Burhan declared a military coup on October 25, 2021, and dissolved the sovereign council and the government.

Since then, the country had been rocked by regular street protests which called for the return of civilian rule.

Microsoft to raise Xbox first-party game prices in 2023

0

Microsoft will reportedly raise its first-party Xbox game prices from $59.99 to $69.99 next year.

The new full-priced Xbox Game Studios games, including Redfall, Starfield, and Forza Motorsport, will be priced at $69.99 instead of the regular $59.99, The Verge reported.

It’s a price increase that matches the pricing that competitors like Sony, Ubisoft, and Take-Two all offer their own games.

“Starting in 2023 our new, built-for next-gen, full-priced games, including Forza Motorsport, Redfall, and Starfield, will launch at $69.99 on all platforms,” Microsoft said in a statement.

“This price reflects the content, scale, and technical complexity of these titles. As with all games developed by our teams at Xbox, they will also be available with Game Pass the same day they launch,” it added.

In October, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer also hinted that prices might increase after the holidays.

SIT to probe old cases against SP MLA in UP

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to investigate old cases against Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Irfan Solanki, has flagged four of the 13 complaints received by the police as ‘serious’ after a preliminary investigation.

Irfan and his brother Rizwan Solanki were sent to jail in connection with a case of arson last week.

The complainants have given concrete evidence to support the charges against the MLA to the police.

The police will first investigate these four complaints. If charges are found to be true, cases will be registered against the MLA.

Irfan and his brother Rizwan, after remaining elusive for 24 days in the arson case, had surrendered before the commissioner of police B.P. Jogdand on Friday morning after a case was registered at the Jajmau police station. They were sent to jail thereafter.

SIT sources said joint commissioner of police Anand Prakash Tiwari held a meeting with the SIT and the scrutiny of the allegations in all the 13 complaints was done minutely. After an initial investigation, SIT has decided to investigate four out of 13 complaints considering them to be serious in nature.

These complaints are allegations of fraudulently taking money and threatening by misusing the position to pressurize for returning, fraudulently extorting money in the purchase of land, and demanding extortion. However, the identity of the complainants has not been divulged by the police.

Ukraine hit by 8th wave of Russian strikes

0

Ukraine has been hit by the latest barrage of Russian missiles, marking the eighth time since the strikes first began on October 10.

In his nightly video address to the nation, President Volodymyr Zelensky late Monday said that four people were killed and technicians have been working to stabilize the energy system.

According to the President, Russia launched at least 70 missiles earlier on Monday, and “most of them were shot down”, Ukrayinska Pravda reported.

He also noted that energy companies immediately started working on restoring power and efforts were underway in Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv regions.

As of Monday night, the regions of Vinnytsia, Kiev, Zhytomyr, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Khmelnytskyi, and Cherkasy have been the hardest hit by the power cuts, the President said, adding there were electricity outages in Moldova as well.

“This proves once again that Russia’s ability to carry out such massive terrorist attacks is a threat not only to Ukraine but to our entire region, at least… That is why stopping terror is a joint task,” he said.

The Ukrainian Air Force claimed that it shot down 60 missiles over the regions of Kiev, Poltava, and Dnipropetrovsk.

As a result of the strikes, two infrastructure facilities in Odesa region were damaged.

Since Russia began its large-scale, coordinated attacks on Ukraine’s power grid on October 10, around half of the country’s energy infrastructure, has been damaged, leaving millions of Ukrainians disconnected from electricity just as winter temperatures dropped below zero.

A fabulous show of football by Brazil sent South Korea packing in their FIFA World Cup 2022 Round of 16 matches at the 974 Stadium in Doha on Monday.

The Koreans were completely outplayed by the Brazilian side in the first half as the South Americans scored 4 goals in a span of 29 minutes. The Asian side could salvage its reputation in the second half, but just, with the help of a 76th-minute goal. The match ended 4-1 with Brazil set to take on Croatia in a quarter-final clash.

The men in yellow began the assault on their Asian rivals when Vinicius Junior, assisted by Neymar Jr netted home in the seventh minute with a right-foot shot. Brazil’s third goal came in the 29th minute when Richarlison shot from the center of the box to make it 3-0. He was assisted by Thiago Silva.

Lucas Paqueta, assisted by Vinicius Junior, made no mistake in the 36th minute to make it 4-0 for the South American side.

Several South Korean fans left the stadium in tears as their team became the last Asian side to exit from the tournament on Tuesday.

PKL 9: Akash Shinde shines as Puneri Paltan defeat Patna Pirates to seal semis spot

0

Akash Shinde did the star turn as Puneri Paltan comprehensively defeated the Patna Pirates 44-30 at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium here on Monday and sealed a place in the semifinals of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season 9.

The Shinde, who tallied 13 points, and Mohammad Nabibakhsh’s (9 points) double show was enough for the Paltan to produce a masterclass.

Billed as a battle between two teams led by Iranian defenders, the electric start was expected. Despite the defensive talent on show, the Paltan ran into an early lead through Akash Shinde’s quick raids.

While Shinde was an obvious starring candidate, Paltan’s Iranian all-rounder Mohammad Nabibakhsh also pulled together points on both sides of the mat to leave the Pirates reeling.

The Paltan inflicted the first All-Out of the game with barely a minute of the first half left to surge into an 18-8 lead. Barely threatened by anyone bar Sachin, Paltan went into the break leading 19-10.

The Paltan deepened the Pirates’ wounds in the second half, Shinde and Nabibakhsh subjecting them to constant touchpoints as they further extended an already comprehensive lead.

At the other end, despite Sachin chipping away with valuable points, the Pirates looked in disarray. A third All-Out by the Paltan late in the game all but confirmed their victory as they went into a 43-19 lead.

The Pirates ended up getting 11 points in the final five minutes, with Mohammedreza Chiyaneh getting a five-point haul, to earn back some respect but in the end, it was too little too late as the Paltan sealed their spot in the semis.

FIFA World Cup: Playing for different countries doesn’t stop Williams brothers from sharing advice

0

The Williams brothers, Inaki and Nico, have made history in this Qatar World Cup by becoming the first brothers with the same mother and father to play for different countries in the same tournament.

Nico is representing Spain, while Inaki formed part of the Ghana squad, opting to play for his parent’s homeland.

Although Inaki is now enjoying a week’s holiday before returning to training with Athletic Club Bilbao after Ghana’s elimination, Nico is still in Qatar preparing for Spain’s last-16 tie with Morocco on Tuesday.

The young winger started in Spain’s 2-1 defeat to Japan last Thursday, making his sixth appearance, but his first start, before being substituted as Spain looked to fight back from a goal down.

Speaking on Spanish radio on Monday morning, he explained how his older brother gave him some post-game pointers, despite forming part of a rival squad.

“On our day off, I was with some friends, and my family and my brother corrected a few things that I didn’t do well (against Japan),” said Nico.

“He didn’t tell me off, but he did correct a few things that I can improve. He saw them from a different perspective to me and he is more experienced, so it was easier,” continued Nico.

“Inaki told me that I need to move more for the ball and I was too static out wide. It’s not a problem I have at our club (Athletic Club Bilbao). I don’t know if it was nerves, but that’s what happened,” he admitted.

Despite Thursday’s disappointment, the 20-year-old admitted that he was enjoying the World Cup experience, reports Xinhua.

“It never entered my head that I would play in the World Cup, it’s the best thing that can happen. I’m still a young lad and to get where I have is a matter of pride for myself and my family. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be here,” Nico admitted.

BJP set for historic seventh consecutive mandate in Gujarat

0

BJP looks all set to create history when Gujarat Assembly election results are announced on December 8, as it is projected to come to power for a seventh consecutive term in the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This was revealed by a Media analysis of the ABP-CVoter Exit Poll with a sample size of 30,000 spread across 182 Assembly seats in Gujarat.

According to the findings, the incumbent BJP, which has already ruled Gujarat continuously for 27 years barring a brief revolt by Shankar Singh Vaghela, is projected to win between 128 and 140 seats in the 182-member Assembly. Despite 27 years of anti-incumbency, the vote share of the BJP is expected to improve slightly from 49.1 percent in 2017 to 49.4 percent in these elections.

In 2017, the BJP had won 99 seats, the lowest tally for the party since it first came to power in Gujarat in 1995. The increased vote share looks like a clear indicator of voter endorsement of the party despite the state facing a number of vexing problems ranging from unemployment to exam paper leaks to a sudden stagnation in growing agricultural prosperity.

In 2017, Congress put up a spirited fight, giving a scare to the ruling BJP. In these elections, the exit poll findings have shown that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is emerging as a formidable third force in the state with a vote share of 15.4 percent. Most of it will be at the cost of Congress as its vote share is projected to slump from 41.4 percent in 2017 to 32.5 percent this time.

The AAP is projected to win between 3 and 11 seats, while the Congress looks likely to win between 31 and 43 seats, significantly lower than the 77 it had won in 2017.

If the exit poll numbers hold true, AAP looks all set to emerge as a national political force after its recent electoral success in Punjab.

Women’s IPL will help bridge the gap between international and domestic cricket: Harmanpreet Kaur

0

India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur feels the upcoming Women’s IPL, scheduled to begin in March next year, will be a major boost for women’s cricket in India, adding that the tournament will help bridge the gap between international and domestic cricket.

“The IPL is a huge step forward for women’s cricket because, before this, we have witnessed the Australia Board, England Board, they have looked after the WBBL and The Hundred. I think we as athletes have discussed it as well, that there’s a big gap between domestic and international cricket which some cricketers were not able to match, because even if you play well in domestic cricket and then suddenly play international games, you’re not able to understand what to do and how to do it.”

“And someone like me, I was lucky you know, I had Jhulan (Goswami) di, Anjum (Chopra) di who were guiding me as to what to do, how I can perform better. So, some players, they are shy, they cannot open up, so, for them, it’s very difficult to play both domestic and international cricket.”

“So, the IPL will be a great platform for players that are really good, but you know for them, international cricket is still something that they cannot change their approach and mindset overnight,” said Harmanpreet on the ‘Follow the Blues’ show on Star Sports.

The right-handed batting all-rounder is optimistic that women’s IPL will also help in elevating the performances of Indian cricketers at the international level. “But in the IPL, when they get a chance to play against overseas players, that will be something that will give them a platform, they can play well, they can understand what is international cricket.”

“So, when they are playing for the Indian team, they will not face any extra pressure, because right now, the players that are selected from the domestic teams, sometimes I can see that they are blank, they are not able to understand how to change their game plan.”

“So, to cut that gap, the tournament will play a major role, and we are happy that after the world cup, we’ll get some really good cricket. So, in the coming years, with the girls who play in the IPL, we will definitely see some major changes in their performances.”

The India women’s team has had a great run in the past few months. Under Harmanpreet, India beat Sri Lanka in a T20I and ODI bilateral series away from home won a 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games silver medal, and bagged a historic 3-0 ODI series win in England, before adding their seventh Women’s Asia Cup trophy.

Vice-captain and left-handed opener Smriti Mandhana further spoke on how the women’s IPL will help Indian domestic players, something which the ‘The Hundred’ or the WBBL have done in a similar way to England and Australia respectively.

“All of the women’s cricket, I won’t say the Indian team or the domestic setup. We keep talking about how it will increase the bench strength. But, the fact is that it’s going to help the domestic girls massively because that sort of experience in playing in leagues like this will get a lot of things sorted for women’s cricket.”

“Grassroot-wise and we have seen how the Big Bash and The Hundred have helped Australia and England respectively in their domestic setup as well as other things. So, I’m actually really happy, the Indian team will benefit a lot from the Women’s IPL, but it’s also going to benefit a lot of domestic girls which I’m looking forward to.”

Middle-order batter Jemimah Rodrigues also agreed with Smriti’s views. “The women’s IPL is going to change a lot of things for women’s cricket in India. I think this is like the best platform for us now that we as an Indian team have been doing so well in all the major events like the World Cup, the Commonwealth.”

“This is just the right time for it to happen and I’m sure that we are going to get so much more talent that’s going to come out from here. I’m sure we are going to get so many different matches and at the same time, I am very sure that women’s cricket in India is all set to go to the next level after the women’s IPL. So, we are really looking forward to it, very excited, and can’t wait to go out there and play the women’s IPL.”

India will now be facing Australia in a five-match T20I series in Mumbai, starting on December 9.
