Resigned at Google, this techie saw his job offer rescinded by Amazon

0

Call it ironic, but a Google software engineer, who resigned to take a new job at Amazon, was told by the company that his job offer has been declined, just 3 days ahead of his first day at the e-commerce giant.

Sharing his ordeal on LinkedIn, Tianyi Gao said that he was an SWE (software engineer) in the company.

“I got a support-check-in project from my manager, so I accepted an offer from Amazon as my backup plan. Unfortunately, after my resignation was approved, I was told the Amazon offer was rescinded, just 3 weekdays ahead of my day 1,” Gao posted.

“I failed to either revoke my resignation or delay the process. Today is my last day at Google. I am an H1-B visa holder and I have only 60 days to find another job,” he lamented.

Gao is among hundreds of employees on H1-B visa who have lost jobs at Meta, Twitter, Amazon, Salesforce, and several other tech companies, and are now trying to get in someplace so that they can stay in the US on a work visa.

As more and more companies across the spectrum sack employees amid the global meltdown, at least 853 tech companies worldwide have laid off about 137,492 employees to date, and the tally is only going north amid recession fears.

According to data from layoffs.fyi, a crowdsourced database of tech layoffs, 1,388 tech companies have fired a total of 233,483 employees since the onset of Covid-19, but 2022 has been the worst for the tech sector.

As of mid-November, more than 73,000 workers in the US tech sector have been laid off in mass-level job cuts led by companies like Meta, Twitter, Salesforce, Netflix, Cisco, Roku, and others.

EU passengers will soon be able to use 5G tech on planes

0

Airline passengers in the European Union (EU) will soon be able to use 5G technology in their phones to full effect in the sky, the media reported.

According to BBC, the European Commission ruled that airlines can offer 5G technology alongside slower mobile data on board planes.

With this, flyers will no longer be required to put their phone in flight mode, though the details of how this will be implemented remain unknown.

“Enable innovative services for people and help European companies grow,” Thierry Breton, EU Commissioner for the Internal Market, was quoted as saying.

“The sky is no longer a limit when it comes to possibilities offered by super-fast, high-capacity connectivity,” he added.

The deadline for member states to make the 5G frequency bands available for planes is June 30, 2023, according to the report.

This will let people use all their phone’s features mid-flight – enabling calls as well as data-heavy apps that stream music and video.

Since 2008, the EU Commission has reserved certain frequency bands for aircraft, allowing some services to provide in-flight internet access, said the report.

However, this service has historically been slow because it relied on equipment to connect people via satellite between the plane and the ground.

The new system will be able to take advantage of 5G’s much faster download speeds, which can reach over 100Mbps according to mobile network EE — allowing a film to be downloaded within minutes, the report added.

With this integration, businesses will be able to use WhatsApp’s extensive features and reach to provide enterprises with unparalleled omnichannel customer engagement.

Bangladesh’s reserves increased to $48 bn, says PM Hasina

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Monday that the country’s reserves have increased to $48 billion during the tenure of her government.

Rubbishing rumors, the premier said: “Some words will spread rapidly and you (people) might be misled. But, I will say there is nothing to be misled.”

She urged the countrymen not to pay heed to any propaganda over foreign reserves and bank liquidity as Bangladesh is economically stable despite many developed countries facing global crisis for the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

“Inflation has increased globally. Many developed countries are at stake economically and facing trouble — their reserve is declining. But, we can say that we have been able to keep Bangladesh in a stable condition,” she said while addressing a graduation ceremony of the National Defence Course-2022 and Armed Forces War Course-2022 at the Sheikh Hasina Complex in Dhaka’s Mirpur Cantonment.

She said the reserves were only $2.5 billion when the Awami League assumed power for the first time in 1996 and it was a mere $5 billion when her party came to the power for the second time in 2001.

The premier said her government has taken every possible measure including purchasing Covid-19 vaccines, giving stimulus packages to industries and business establishments, and reaching cash to every person up to a grassroots level to protect Bangladesh’s economy and its people from the wrath of the pandemic.

She said they purchased the Covid-19 vaccines by giving 12,000 crore taka in advance while the development of the vaccine was in the research stage.

Bangladesh has administered the Covid-19 vaccines to its people free of cost despite the fact that no rich or developed country did it, the Prime Minister said.

Hasina reiterated her call to bring all lands under cultivation so Bangladesh never falls into a food crisis as the world is approaching a serious food problem.

She also said her government did not show any stinginess in spending money to protect Bangladesh and its people, urging people to show austerity in using electricity, gas, and water.

Samsung receives 2 cloud security int’l standard certifications

0

Samsung Electronics announced that it has acquired two cloud-related international standard certifications, which confirms its information protection and system operation capabilities.

Samsung Electronics has cleared ‘ISO 27001’ (Information Security Management System) and ‘ISO 27017’ (Cloud Service Information Security Management System) established by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and certified by the British Royal Society of Standards, the company said in a blog post.

The MX division, which is in charge of mobile devices like smartphones, has attained this certification, proving the superiority of the management system and information security of ‘Private Cloud’, which is run independently for services like terminal software updates.

One of the most recognized certifications in the field of information security, ISO 27001, was created in 1999 and is based on the BSI-defined ‘Information Security Management System (BS7799)’ standard.

“Samsung Electronics spared no efforts by securing cloud technology and strengthening its security capabilities,” said Ahn Gil-Joon, vice president, of the mobile platform center at Samsung Electronics’ MX division. “We will continue to work hard to make it happen,” he added.

Information protection policy and access control are just two examples of the 133 management requirements that must be achieved in order to receive the certification.

ISO 27017 can be attained only when the cloud service environment and information protection management are created and run by international standards.

“The importance of cloud technology and information protection is increasing in a rapidly growing business environment,” said BSI (British Standards Institution), the world’s first national standard-setting institution.

“Through this review, of Samsung Electronics’ private cloud system we have confirmed that operational capabilities and security are in line with international standards,” it added.

Niharika Chouksey says it was not easy for her family to accept her profession being a girl

TV actress Niharika Chouksey, who is playing the titular role in the show ‘Faltu’, said like the lead character, she also faced a similar kind of situation in her real life and felt discriminated against by her family members being a girl child.

She shared: “I had a similar experience in a way like Faltu when I told my parents that I want to make my career in acting. They were pretty supportive but my relatives weren’t. They were like girls shouldn’t be working in this field, this clearly shows their lack of knowledge about this and how discriminative they are.”

Niharika has been part of films such as ‘Jahaan Chaar Yaar’ in which she played the character of Swara Bhasker’s daughter, and she was also seen in ‘Janhit Mein Jaari’, playing the sister of Nushrratt Bharuccha.

Now, she is playing the lead in ‘Faltu’ which is all about the attitude of people living in rural parts towards girl children and how certain times they end up giving them names like ‘Faltu’ with a belief that the next child will be a boy.

The actress added that she would not have faced those kinds of differences with the family, had she been a boy and expressed a desire of becoming an actor.

“They wouldn’t have reacted in the same way if my brother wanted to do it, so as we can see we all face this kind of discrimination in our day-to-day lives and we don’t even know,” she added. Faltu airs on Star Plus.

Country’s first hydroelectric project in Himachal going down drain

0

With the 99-year lease agreement of the country’s first hydroelectric project presently under the control of the Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL) in Himachal Pradesh ending in 2024, the maintenance of the 110 MW British-era power plant, which stands amidst the lush green dense deodar forests in the Barot Valley, is going down the drain.

Commissioned in 1932, the Shanan hydroelectric plant was constructed under a 99-year lease deed executed between Jogendra Sen, the then Mandi ruler, and Col. B.C. Batty, the then Chief Engineer of the Punjab government, in 1925.

The project in Jogindernagar in Mandi district has been facing a public outcry for a long as locals say it is located in the state and uses the state’s water for generating power while another state is earning revenue from it by selling the electricity.

Also, they are expressing concern over the deplorable condition of the powerhouse.

The people, including politicians, have been demanding the project should be handed over to the state before the lease expiry.

State officials admit to IANS that as the lease expiry is ending nearer the PSPCL authorities have almost stopped its upkeep and maintenance.

“For over a decade and a half, the Punjab government has stopped taking care of the project machinery and is on the verge of shut down,” a senior official, requesting anonymity, told IANS. “When the project would be handed over to the state government, it might be of no use for the state.”

As per the PSPCL, the Shanan hydel project has achieved a record generation of 637.18 million units (MUs) in the year 1998-99 since its commissioning, a milestone in its history.

It produced 597.98 MUs in 2010-11, which is a record generation in the last 10 years. In 2020-21, it produced 508.488 MUs.

The Shanan Project came into being based on an agreement made on March 3, 1925.

During a reorganization of Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh in 1966, the Shanan Power House was allocated to Punjab by the Union Ministry of Irrigation and Power.

As per the PSPCL, the objection raised by Himachal Pradesh in this regard stands clarified by the government of India vide a letter dated March 2, 1972, reaffirming the allotment of Shanan Power House in favor of Punjab.

The 48 MW Stage-I project was constructed at the initial cost of Rs 2,53,43,709 and commissioned in 1932 and was officially opened by the Viceroy of India at Shalimar Receiving Station in Lahore on March 10, 1933.

The project originally was of 48 MW capacity, but the Punjab government enhanced its capacity to 60 MW in 1982. Later, 50 MW more was added to make it’s capacity 110 MW.

Even a delegation of BJP MPs from Himachal Pradesh in 2015 met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought possession of the British-era utility.

At that time, a four-member CEA team inspected the buildings, machinery, and other equipment of the Shanan powerhouse.

Even a petition was filed recently in the Himachal Pradesh High Court to demand handing over of the project, generating a revenue of Rs 100 crore annually, to the hill state.

The petitioner said the then British government had proposed the project to supply electricity to Punjab.

It was agreed that the Mandi state will provide the land and water of the Uhl, a tributary of the Beas river, in lieu of which the state will get 500 KW of free electricity.

Praying for the quashing of agreements and notifications relating to the project by the government of India, he said Himachal is a small state with limited income sources while the project’s revenue is more than Rs 100 crore per year. If the project is handed over to Himachal Pradesh and its general public, it will strengthen the state economy.

The main attraction of the hydro project is the four-stage haulage trolley service. It was basically constructed for carrying construction material for the Shanan powerhouse from Jogindernagar to Barot. It is a unique type of trolley based on a pulley system with no engine, steering wheel, or no gears, or brakes.

Since falling on bad times, the trolley is defunct owing to poor maintenance with tracks now covered in vegetation.

Locals rue the trolley can be used for tourism purposes, besides its national historical tag. They say it is marvel to see the steep ascent of the trolley track.

Barot, which was not linked to a road till the late 1970s, is world famous for angling trout fish and is the gateway to the Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary which lies across the Uhl.

No chance of meeting PM separately this time: Mamata

0

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that she was not meeting the Prime Minister separately during her Delhi visit.

“There is no chance of separately meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during my four-day visit to New Delhi and Rajasthan, starting from Monday,” the Chief Minister informed the reporters at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata before leaving for the national capital on Monday afternoon.

She said that she will be attending the chief ministers meeting at the Rashtrapati Bhavan late Monday evening which has been convened by the Prime Minister to discuss India’s hosting of the G20 summit next year.

“There I will have some interaction with the Prime Minister. But there is no chance of meeting The Prime Minister separately this time,” the chief minister said. She also did not give the details of whether there was any possibility of her meeting with the leaders of other parties during her visit.

Mamata Banerjee has already made it clear that she will be attending the meeting at the Rashtrapati Bhavan not as the chief minister of West Bengal but as the national president of All India Trinamool Congress.

On Tuesday, she is supposed to leave for Rajasthan to visit two iconic religious sites in the desert, Ajmer Sharif and Pushkar Lake. “When I was the railways’ minister, I arranged the railways’ link to these two religious sites. I had a wish for a long time to visit these two places, which I will be fulfilling this time,” the chief minister said before leaving for New Delhi.

On Wednesday after returning to New Delhi, Mamata Banerjee is expected to meet all her party — Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members — at the official residence of the veteran party MP Saugata Roy in New Delhi.

In the meeting, she is expected to finalize the party’s strategy within Parliament during the forthcoming winter session of the House.

All the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members of the party have been asked to be mandatorily present at the meeting. Party sources said in the meeting that the chief minister also was expected to outline how to counter issues raised by other party MPs on the various controversies in the state.

Google Home routines disappear as control settings get new UI

0

Google is reportedly making more user interface (UI) changes as its Home application ramps up preview testing for its major redesign, but it also appears to be breaking existing Assistant routines for some users.

The Google Home application has introduced a new interface for including smart home devices in routines during the past few days, reports 9To5Google.

The new page allows routines to manage various features of each device, as opposed to the previous page’s drop-down settings that only allowed users to adjust the on or off settings for each light or switch in their home.

In contrast to the earlier interface, which could only manage on or off settings, the deeper menu now allows changes to color, brightness, and more depending on the device being controlled, the report said.

In October this year, the tech giant announced that it was rolling out a Home update that would let users view their Nest camera and doorbell feeds on the web.

Google said users can easily check in on live views in full screen, zoom in to see more details, view camera status, and more, all from a web browser.

Badminton Asia Jr C’ships: Unnati scripts history, becomes first Indian to enter U-17 singles final

0

Rising shuttler Unnati Hooda created history at the Badminton Asia U-17 & U-15 Junior Championships 2022 by becoming the first Indian to enter the U-17 singles final after thrashing Japan’s Mion Yokouchi 21-8, 21-17 in Nonthaburi, Thailand on Saturday.

The U-15 singles player Anish Thoppani and the U-17 men’s doubles pair of Arsh Mohammad and Sanskar Saraswat also posted brilliant victories to move into their respective finals.

Top-seed Unnati once again lived up to the expectations and stamped her authority in the U-17 women’s singles semifinal when she wrapped up the match in straight sets. The Odisha Open champion has not yet dropped a set in her campaign at the prestigious event.

Previously, the men’s doubles pairs of Arjun M.R-Chirag Shetty (2013) and Krishna Prasad Garaga-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy (2015) had won gold medals for India in the U-17 category at the tournament.

“It’s a great achievement for a youngster. Unnati has proved her top-seeding with dominating displays throughout the tournament. I congratulate her on becoming the first Indian to enter the U-17 singles final at this prestigious tournament. And I also congratulate Anish, Arsh, and Sanskar for entering the finals and also other Indians who secured bronze medals. This tournament is a great platform for young shuttlers and Unnati and our other shuttlers have showcased their talent with impressive performances,” said Sanjay Mishra, General Secretary of the Badminton Association of India.

Unnati will now take on Sarunrak Vitidsarn of Thailand in the gold medal match.

The in-form duo of Arsh and Sanskar also showcased a similar dominating display against Chinese Taipei’s Chi-Ruei Chiu and Shao Hua Chiu to ease into ‘the U-17 men’s doubles final with a commanding 21-15, 21-19 win in the lopsided Last-4 contest.

They will now face another Chinese Taipei opponent, Lai Po Yu, and Yi-Hao Lin, in the final.

Later in the men’s U-15 semifinal, Anish made a sensational comeback after being one set down to stun the second seed Lee Yu-Jui of Chinese Taipei with an 18-21, 21-12, 21-12 win.

In the final, Anish will be up against Chung-Hsiang Yih of Chinese Taipei, who beat India’s Gnana Dattu 21-16, 19-21, 21-13 in another semi-final.

In 2013, Siril Verma won a gold medal in the men’s U-15 singles while Samiya Farooqui and Tasnim Mir clinched U-15 women’s singles titles in 2017 and 2019 respectively.

With this defeat, Dattu signed off with bronze medals a’ong with the U-15 men’s doubles pair of Bjorn Jaison and Aathish Sreenivas P.V, whose impressive run was cut short by the top-seeded Indonesian pair of Muhammad Mubarrok and Raihan Pramono with an 18-21, 14-21 win. The finals will be played on Sunday.

PKL 9: Fear of missing playoffs spot spurred us on, says Haryana Steelers coach Manpreet

0

The Haryana Steelers have found form just in the nick of time and have become one of the strong contenders for a spot in the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season 9 Playoffs. After registering their third consecutive victory on Friday, the Steelers have moved to seventh place with 51 points from 19 games.

Speaking about their 32-26 win over Bengal Warriors, Haryana Steelers’ head coach Manpreet Singh said, “Nobody can say who will finish at the fourth, fifth and sixth spots until the last match of league stage is played. We have a good chance of qualifying if we play well. The team has shown that it has good talent in our last three matches. They are playing with good coordination.”

Manpreet further added, “Our defense unit played well in the first two matches, but then it lost its way. The players know that they will be out of the competition even if they lose one match, so this situation has inspired them to perform well. Jaideep and Mohit have shown their combination. If the defense unit continues to play in the same manner, then there’s no team that can give competition to our side.”

The head coach also said that Season 9 has been very enjoyable to watch, “This season has been very competitive since a lot of young players have been doing well. And everyone who has been watching this league has been enjoying it as well. Hence, I am very happy that I have made a career in kabaddi. I am very proud that I have played kabaddi and this sport has reached such a big height today.”

The U Mumba side is desperate for a victory after facing two back-to-back losses, but they will be up against an in-form Gujarat Giants on Sunday. While Gujarat will bank on all-rounder Parteek Dahiya, U Mumba will hope for raider Guman Singh to take them over the line.

The Bengaluru Bulls will be hoping to get their campaign back on track after facing a tough 25-45 loss to Jaipur Pink Panthers in their last game, but they will be taking on the U.P. Yoddhas, who have recorded four back-to-back victories.

Summoned by CBI in liquor scam, Kavitha meets KCR

The Supreme Court has granted anticipatory bail to an accused facing a rape charge, where the victim alleged that the accused established a sexual relationship with her on the pretext of marriage.

A bench comprising justices Sanjiv Khanna and M.M. Sundresh said: “We have examined the official report, and also perused the assertions made by the informant in the FIR. On consideration, we are inclined to grant the appellant — Mukesh Kumar Singh — the benefit of anticipatory bail with the direction that in the event of the appellant being arrested, he shall be released on bail by the arresting officer on terms and conditions to be fixed by the trial court. In addition, the appellant shall comply with the mandate of Section 438(2) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973.”

The allegations levelled in the FIR registered in Jaipur said that the accused had established physical relations with the prosecutrix multiple times, promising her that they will get married.

The petitioner moved the apex court, through criminal lawyer Namit Saxena, challenging the Rajasthan High Court order which dismissed his plea for grant of pre-arrest bail.

The bench said, “Grant of anticipatory bail to the appellant would not be treated as an expression of opinion on the merits of the case… Miscellaneous Petition… pending before the high court of judicature for Rajasthan, bench at Jaipur will be decided on merits and in accordance with the law, without being influenced by this order.”

Saxena argued that sexual intercourse by a couple in a long, romantic relationship will not amount to rape if the male partner chooses to exit after courtship.

He also argued that if the male partner chooses to exit from a romantic relationship and not culminate the same into marriage, the sexual intercourse during the period of courtship cannot be treated as without consent at all times or be termed as rape after the relationship turns sour.

The top court said, “The impugned order rejecting the application for grant of anticipatory bail is set aside and the appeal is allowed in the above terms. Pending application(s), if any, shall stand disposed of.”

IND v BAN: Rohit, Kohli return as India brace themselves for Bangladesh challenge in ODIs

0

With T20 World Cups happening in 2021 and 2022, there was very little focus on ODI cricket. But now with the 2023 ODI World Cup less than 12 months, suddenly the format seems to have gained high importance in the eyes of teams and fans.

After a young side went to New Zealand and lost the only ODI of the series with the next two matches being rain-affected, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul are back as India brace themselves for the challenge from Bangladesh in the series opener on Sunday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur, Dhaka.

The ODIs against Bangladesh will also mark the re-uniting of Rohit, Shikhar Dhawan and Kohli as the top three. Since the 2019 World Cup, the trio has featured in just 12 ODIs together.

It remains to be seen if the opening pair of Rohit and Dhawan will be able to give India an aggressive start in the first ten overs and whether Kohli can carry his sizzling T20I form into a format where he has been a master of acing chases.

The focus will also be on India’s middle-order, especially on who will bat at four, five, and six. Rahul had established himself in the middle-order through stellar performances, and Shreyas Iyer has been consistently impressive in whatever opportunities he has got in absence of star-studded players in the format.

Rishabh Pant offers a left-handed option in the middle order, but even his ardent fans will agree that he has to get the big runs against Bangladesh to keep himself in the reckoning, especially with contenders like Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson (who is not a part of this series).

In terms of bowlers, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar are the favorites for the spin combination. As far as fast-bowling is concerned, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Deepak Chahar, Kuldeep Sen, and Umran Malik are in the mix. It should be interesting to see what balance India opts for in the ODIs in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, will be without regular ODI skipper Tamim Iqbal due to a groin injury, and Taskin Ahmed, due to a reoccurrence of a back injury. With an experienced opener and pacer went, stand-in captain, Litton Das will have to get the best out of the resources he has.

Litton, who sparkled with 63 against India in T20 World Cup in Adelaide, will need senior players like Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mahmudullah to step up in their roles. Others like Afif Hossain, Yasir Ali, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Anamul Haque will be expected to come in and rescue Bangladesh from tough situations.

In the fast-bowling department, left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman, who was the breakout star with 13 wickets to give Bangladesh a memorable ODI series win over India in 2015, will be the leader of the bowling attack with Hasan Mahmud and Ebadot Hossain. But with star players back in the mix, India would be hoping to win an ODI series in Bangladesh, something which hasn’t happened since October 2016.

Squads

India:

Rohit Sharma (captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, Shreyas Iyer, Rahul Tripathi, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Shahbaz Ahmed, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Deepak Chahar, Kuldeep Sen, and Umran Malik.

Bhumi Pednekar: Have loved delivering the punches in ‘Govinda Naam Mera’

Bollywood actress Bhumi Pednekar, who plays Vicky Kaushal’s bombshell wife in the upcoming streaming movie ‘Govinda Naam Mera’, shares that her character has the most hilarious dialogues in the film and that the makers have subverted the industry norm by giving the punchlines to the female character.

Elaborating on the same, the actress says, “I honestly have loved delivering the punches in the film and I have to admit that I have been given some of the most hilarious punchlines by Shashank (Khaitan, the director). What I love the most about my dialoguebaazi (punchy dialogues) in ‘Govinda Naam Mera’ is that they are from the heroine’s side and that’s refreshing for a romantic comedy in the Hindi film industry because traditionally only heroes used to get all the great dialogues in a genre like this and make people laugh.”

She lauds the film’s producer Karan Johar and the director as she adds, “I’m glad that my producer Karan Johar and my director Shashank Khaitan thought of subverting the norm and empowering a girl to deliver some of the most cracking dialogues that I have seen on screen in recent times. Gauri Waghmare is literally one of my favorite characters that I have played on screen.”

Talking about her character, Bhumi mentions that she is equal to a man and constantly reminds a man that her gender doesn’t make her inferior and that she is the master of her own actions and decisions.

The film, which also stars Kiara Advani and Vicky Kaushal, is produced by Dharma Productions and will stream on Disney+ Hotstar from December 16.
