Summoned by CBI in liquor scam, Kavitha meets KCR

A day after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sought clarifications on the Delhi liquor policy scam, TRS MLC K. Kavitha on Saturday met Telangana Chief Minister and her father K. Chandrashekar Rao.

Kavitha drove to Pragati Bhavan, the residence of CM KCR. They are believed to be discussing the strategy to counter what they believe is a political vendetta by the BJP government at the Centre by targeting them through Central agencies.

She is likely to discuss the latest developments with brother and state minister K. T. Rama Rao and other family members.

The TRS leaders are also believed to be discussing the political strategy of the party to counter investigations by Central agencies like the CBI, Enforcement Directorate (ED), and Income Tax against state ministers, MPs, state legislators, and other leaders.

Meanwhile, a large number of TRS workers reached Kavitha’s house to show solidarity with her a day after she confirmed that the CBI has issued a notice to her.

“I’ve been issued a CBI Notice under Section 160 of Cr. P.C., seeking my clarification. I have informed the authorities that I can meet them at my residence in Hyderabad on Dec 6th as per their request,” Kavita said in a statement on Friday.

The CBI notice dated December 2, stated, “During the course of investigation of the subject cited case, certain facts have emerged which you may be acquainted with, hence your examination on such facts is required in the interest of investigation.”

On November 30, Kavitha’s name surfaced in the remand report filed by the ED in a Delhi court on Wednesday for the remand of businessman Amit Arora in the Delhi liquor policy scam.

According to the remand report, businessman Vijay Nair, who has already been arrested in the case, received kickbacks of Rs 100 crore on behalf of AAP leaders from a group, called ‘South Group’.

The group is controlled by Sarath Reddy, Kavitha, and Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, it added.

Sarath Reddy, one of the directors of pharma major Aurobindo Pharma, has already been arrested.

Srinivasulu Reddy is a member of Parliament belonging to Andhra Pradesh’s ruling party YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).

The CBI is likely to seek information from Kavitha based on the remand report. The ED stated in the report that the TRS leader changed 10 phone devices between December 2021 and October 2022.

Kavitha had said on December 1 that she will fully cooperate with the central agency and is not scared of anything.

She alleged that the BJP government at the Centre is playing cheap tricks to damage her reputation through media leaks.

“We have already said we are ready to face any probe. If an agency comes and questions, we will definitely give a reply but if you resort to media leaks to damage the reputation of leaders, people will definitely fight back,” she said.

Kavitha, a member of the Telangana Legislative Council, also dared the Modi government to put her in jail. “If you want to put me in jail, do it. There is no problem but we will not stop working for the people and we will continue to expose the failures of the BJP,” she said.

The former MP alleged that the ED, CBI, and IT cases against ministers, MLAs and other TRS leaders were BJP’s reaction to TRS exposing its conspiracy to topple the democratically elected government.

“You conspired to topple the government and since we exposed this before people, as a reaction ED, CBI, and IT cases are booked against ministers, MLAs, and MLCs,” she said.

Washington Sundar is a treasure India have unearthed: Laxman Sivaramakrishnan

0

2022 has been a year where injuries have hampered Washington Sundar from playing as many matches as possible for India. But the Chennai-based youngster has shown enough glimpses of excellence with both bat and ball to make people believe he can be a genuine all-rounder for India.

India’s recently-concluded ODI series against New Zealand was a notable illustration of Washington’s all-around skills coming together. At Auckland, Sundar hit an unbeaten 16-ball 37 to take India past the 300-mark.

In Christchurch, where the situation demanded of him to show restraint, he made 51 off 64 balls and carried India past 200. Though Sundar didn’t pick any wicket in the series, he was at his economical best, seen from an economy rate of 4.46.

According to former India leg-spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, Washington is a treasure who needs to be nurtured and is more suited to be the spin all-rounder. “If you call Hardik Pandya the seam bowling all-rounder, we need to call Washington Sundar from here on as a spin bowling all-rounder.”

“Both of them would fit in really well because they can both bat and bowl as well. One of them can be used as the fifth bowling option or they can even share ten overs because they can contribute with the bat as well. Washington Sundar is a treasure we have unearthed and we need to preserve and make it mature,” he said to IANS in an exclusive interaction organised by Sony Sports Network.

Sivaramakrishnan was quick to remind that Washington’s batting had come to the fore in Tests first. “Don’t forget his Test knocks in Brisbane (62 in the first innings) and Chennai (96 not out). He’s capable of batting in any conditions. In Chennai, you play on pitches where the ball turns and in Brisbane, the ball flies around. He’s got runs in both these venues and he’s a very effective batter as he started his career as a batter, and then went to bowling off-spin, very much like (Ravichandran) Ashwin.”

With his pristine timing, calmness under pressure, conventional stroke play, and ability to pull off even unconventional strokes, Washington ticks every box needed for a top-order batter. Just after Washington’s unbeaten 37 at Auckland, former India cricketer WV Raman tweeted that all teams featuring Washington should make better use of his batting abilities.

So, how can the Indian team make the most out of Washington’s batting skills? Sivaramakrishnan thinks he should be developed to be a dependable batter at number five or six, citing the lack of left-handed batters in India’s top six during the T20 World Cup.

“The saying goes of the left-right combination makes it difficult for the bowlers. Yes, it does make it difficult for the bowlers who are not skilled enough to chase the lines immediately. A lot of bowlers struggle to bowl to left-right combination and Washington Sundar can be trained to bat at number five or six because he is somebody who can pace an innings. He’s not a slogger, can pace the innings and in 50-overs, middle overs are very important. As a batting unit, you don’t want to lose wickets in middle overs.”

At the same time, Sivaramakrishnan wants Sundar’s off-spin bowling to be enhanced to pick more wickets. “Now what he’s doing is bowling economically, trying to create pressure for somebody else. But someone’s got to train him into the mindset and develop the art of thinking wickets.”

“Only if you think wickets, you can get wickets. If you don’t think wickets and you think I need to bowl more dot balls, you will be concentrating only on dot balls, but not taking a wicket. Five dot balls and a four/six on the last ball can make it a slightly bad over.”

“He’s a fantastic batter, while his off-spin bowling has to change from defensive to aggressive to pick up wickets because I think he would play an integral part in the next World Cup being held in India. He will play a substantial part, so invest in him and make sure he’s fit for a long time. He’s a young, flexible, strong man and he shouldn’t be falling sick or unfit at all.”

As Sivaramakrishnan mentioned, a combination of injuries and illness forced Washington to miss many important matches in the last 18 months. He missed the England tour and the second half of IPL 2021 due to a finger injury. Testing positive for Covid-19 meant he was forced to miss ODIs against South Africa in January 2022.

Though he did play ODIs against West Indies at Ahmedabad in February, he was ruled out of T20Is against them and Sri Lanka due to a hamstring injury. In IPL 2022, he injured his bowling hand while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad and missed a couple of matches.

Landing heavily on his left shoulder while fielding for his county side Lancashire in August forced him to pull out of India’s three-match ODI series in Zimbabwe. Sivaramakrishnan thinks the responsibility of looking after Washington fitness-wise lies with the trainer and physio.

“The last time I saw him at a function, he was as thin as a stick. I was thin in my playing career, but he was much thinner than me. Now, he’s looking in really good shape and mentally strong. Once you are mentally strong and very fit, your confidence automatically goes up.”

“We have seen this in performances when the other batters found it difficult to bat and he was batting easily. It shows the difference in calibre of Washington Sundar and the other people who were looking to bat. He’s a high-quality player but needs to field better and the fielding coach has to work with him on it. Otherwise, Washington is a superb cricketer and a genuine all-rounder.”

India tour of Bangladesh will be broadcasted live on SONY SPORTS TEN 5 (English), SONY SPORTS TEN 3 (Hindi) & SONY SPORTS TEN 4 (Tamil & Telugu) channels from December 4-26.

India’s G20 Presidency will boost global economy, open Internet: Sundar Pichai

0

India taking over the G20 Presidency will be an amazing opportunity to build consensus on strengthening the global economy by advancing an internet that is open, connected, secure, and works for everyone, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai has said.

Pichai, who received the Padma Bhushan, India’s highest civilian honor, from India’s Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, in San Francisco, said that it is incredibly meaningful to be honored in this way “by the country that shaped me”.

“India is a part of me. I carry it with me wherever I go. I was fortunate to grow up in a family that cherished learning and knowledge, with parents who sacrificed a lot to make sure I had opportunities to explore my interests,” Pichai said in a blog post late on Friday.

He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Digital India’ vision has certainly been an accelerator, “and I’m proud that Google continues to invest in India, partnering with governments, businesses, and communities over two transformative decades”.

Google recently announced to invest of $10 billion in India’s digital future, working to enable more affordable internet access, building products for India’s unique needs, helping businesses of all sizes in their digital transformation, and using AI to tackle big societal challenges.

“We’re also investing deeply in digital skilling and have trained over 1 million women through our WomenWill Entrepreneurship Program and over 55,000 teachers in partnership with the government and local organisations,” said Pichai.

The tech giant also sponsored over 100,000 Google Career Certificate sponsorships in collaboration with the Nasscom Foundation and Tata Strive.

“Earlier this year, we added 24 new languages to Google Translate using a new advancement in machine learning. Eight of them are languages native to India,” said Pichai.

Europe would be in trouble without US: Finnish PM

0

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said that Europe is not “strong enough right now” and that it “would be in trouble without the US”.

The Finnish leader who is currently on a visit to Australia, made the remarks at the Lowy Institute think tank in Sydney on Friday, the BBC reported.

Stressing the need to strengthen Europe’s defenses since military stocks are depleting due to a constant supply flow to Ukraine, Marin said: “I must be brutally honest with you, Europe isn’t strong enough right now… We would be in trouble without the US.

“The US has given a lot of weapons, a lot of financial aid, a lot of humanitarian aid to Ukraine, and Europe isn’t strong enough yet.”

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the US has committed $18.6 billion in support to Kyiv and is by far the largest provider of military assistance to the war-torn nation. The second largest donor is the European Union, followed by the UK.

Marin went on to say that Europe must make sure it is “building those capabilities when it comes to European defense, European defense industry, and making sure that we could cope in different kinds of situations”, reports the BBC.

The Prime Minister also criticized some European countries’ attempts at building closer ties with Russia in recent decades.

“For a long time, Europe was building a strategy for Russia… to buy energy from Russia and to close those economic ties, and we thought that this would prevent the war,” she said, adding that mindset was “proven entirely wrong”.

European countries should have listened to states like Poland and the Baltics, Main said, who had warned that Russia does not “care about their economic ties, they don’t care about the sanctions, they don’t care about any of that” when it comes to invading Ukraine.

The meeting, party sources say, has been called to discuss the strategy and preparations for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as well as the 2023 assembly elections in several states.

Considering India’s G-20 presidency a major achievement, the party will also outline programmes linked with it to apprise people about the country’s “growing global influence under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi”.

PKL 9: Jaideep, Meetu star as Haryana Steelers beat Bengal Warriors

0

Haryana Steelers continued their winning run as they picked up a 32-26 win over Bengal Warriors in a Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season 9 match on Friday at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium.

Meetu and Jaideep starred in the match for the Haryana Steelers, as they earned six points each to help their team get their third win in a row. Shrikant Jadhav was the leading points scorer for the Bengal Warriors, picking seven points, but it was not enough to turn the tide.

Manjeet started the encounter for the Steelers with a bonus point, but he was caught by Girish on the first attempt. With Meetu getting a touch on Vaibhav, Haryana Steelers took a 2-1 lead.

Jaideep took out Shrikant Jadhav with a strong tackle and Haryana Steelers extended the lead by two points. Minutes later, Deepak Hooda earned a raid point to level the scoreline at 6-6.

Vaibhav took down Meetu with an ankle hold as Bengal Warriors took lead for the first time in the match. A defensive error from Mohit further allowed the Warriors to extend their lead by two points. But a Super Tackle by Jaideep once again brought the Steelers back on level terms.

At the start of the second half, Meetu earned an easy raid point to put Bengal Warriors under pressure. Haryana quickly inflicted an All-Out on the Bengal Warriors to widen the gap to 19-13.

Rakesh Narwal showcased his skills in defense as he caught Deepak Hooda. The Mohit and Jaideep combination came alive and earned quick points as the Haryana Steelers gained a nine-point lead with 10 minutes left on the clock.

The second half started with Manjeet getting caught by Deepak Hooda straightaway as Bengal Warriors maintained their control of the match. But K Prapanjan earned a four-point super raid as Haryana Steelers began their fightback.

With a Super Tackle on Manjeet, Vijay Malik earned two points for Bengal Warriors and ensured they do not allow the opposition any room to get back in the game.

Shrikant kept getting raid points as Bengal Warriors ensured Haryana Steelers continue to remain on their toes.

But a couple of defensive errors from the Bengal Warriors allowed Manjeet to get two points for Haryana Steelers, thus, ensuring their lead. Rakesh earned a late three-point Super Raid and the Haryana Steelers picked up another thrilling victory.

Smith captains Australia in Test against West Indies as Cummins suffers mild quad soreness

0

Australia batter Steve Smith has stepped into captain the side in their ongoing first Test against the West Indies at Perth after regular skipper Pat Cummins did not take the field due to mild quad soreness.

Cummins had claimed 3/34 from 20.2 overs in the first innings of the match, and also reached 200 Test wickets. For the fourth innings of the match, where Australia have set West Indies a target of 498, he was replaced by substitute fielder Scott Boland for the afternoon session on day four.

“Pat Cummins is experiencing some mild right-sided quadricep soreness. “He will continue to be monitored by team medical staff and his availability to bowl in the second innings will be assessed on an ongoing basis,” said Cricket Australia in a statement on Saturday.

Smith had captained Australia during last summer’s Ashes Test against England in Adelaide when Cummins was ruled out of the match after being deemed a close contact with a Covid-19 positive testing person at a restaurant.

Cummins’ absence also leaves Australia without one of their strike bowlers in their experienced bowling line-up as they are hunting in the hunt for the ten West Indies wickets to win the match and take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

It also means that Australia has to rejig its bowling plans. Fast-bowling all-rounder Cameron Green may be required to contribute more with the ball while the part-time spin of Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head may be needed too.

Cummins declared Australia’s second innings at lunch on day four, shortly after Labuschagne made an unbeaten 104, adding to the 204 he smacked in the first innings. It is not yet clear if Cummins is in doubt for the second Test against the West Indies at Adelaide Oval starting from Thursday.

Suryakumar Yadav will someday win a World Cup for Team India: Brett Lee

0

Legendary Australia fast-bowler Brett Lee believes India’s in-form batter Suryakumar Yadav will someday be a major factor in winning a World Cup for the Indian team. 2022 has been a year in which Yadav, through his 360-degree play and astonishing shots, became the toast of T20I cricket.

He is currently the highest run-getter in T20Is this year with 1,164 runs in 31 matches, averaging 46.56 and at a strike rate of 187.43. He also lit up the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia, the first time he’s played competitive cricket in the country. Yadav amassed 239 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 189.68, often changing the tempo of the innings for India.

“SKY was one of the highlights for me at the T20 World Cup. He continues to bat with the same attitude. Not only will he score big runs but he will also someday win a World Cup for Team India. I love watching him play. My advice to SKY would beno advice. Keep doing what you are doing, don’t change, don’t complicate things, back yourself,” said Lee on his YouTube channel.

Just after T20 World Cup, Suryakumar enthralled cricket fans yet again when he smashed 111 not out off 51 balls against New Zealand at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. In that match, the rest of the visitors’ batters made 69 runs off as many balls and Suryakumar’s knock was called by Virat Kohli on Twitter as a “video game innings.”

“India did not win the T20 World Cup by the SKY rose. Of course, I am talking about Suryakumar Yadav. He is the new global T20 superstar. What a sensational 12-15 months he has had on the big stage.”

“He has shown here on Australian grassy wickets where the ball skids through. His fearlessness and his shot selection are like a chess grandmaster. His execution is awe-inspiring and the smile on his face when he played it, it is priceless,” added an impressed Lee.

On Yadav’s technique of playing shots which has made him stand out from other players, Lee stated that his basics of the game are sorted and wants Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma to let him shine in the coming years for India.

“I like the way he executes the impossible shots because his basics are in place. He doesn’t go out there and just tries to hit the ball that isn’t there to hit. He has a wonderful technique and he is definitely a player for the future.”

“You can trust Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma to just let him be the person he needs to be. The SKY would rise and this could lead to many more peaks for India in years to come.”

Assam govt to convert 1,100 wooden bridges to concrete

In an effort to improve road connectivity across the state, the Assam government has decided to convert 1,100 wooden bridges to concrete, an official said here on Friday.

The government will invest Rs 4,000 crore for the project. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held a meeting regarding the project with top Public Works Department (PWD) officials in Guwahati on Thursday evening.

Apart from the construction of new concrete bridges, the state government has decided to reconstruct roads in the Dima Hasao district which were damaged during the heavy monsoon floods earlier this year.

For this, nearly Rs 3,800 crore has been allocated. Both these projects have received the Central government’s approval, the official added.

During Thursday’s meeting, Sarma also informed that in association with World Bank and Asian Development Bank, the Public Works (Roads) Department is implementing numerous crucial projects in the state.

Notable among these were the Rs 2,608-crore Guwahati-North Guwahati Bridge, and Rs 3,197-crore Palasbari-Suwalkuchi Bridge.

The Chief Minister also said that the state government has already set a deadline of March 2026 to complete all the major road projects in the state.

Netflix plans to expand early feedback programme to more subscribers

0

Streaming giant Netflix was reportedly planning to expand its early feedback programme to more subscribers across the globe.

Through its programme, the company invites subscribers to preview its upcoming projects and to receive feedback about them ahead of release, reports The Verge.

Netflix currently has a small group of about 2,000 subscribers for its Preview Club program which the company is planning to expand to “tens of thousands” more subscribers across the globe.

This will help the streaming giant to gather reactions from people that might be used to make final adjustments to the streamer’s films and movies ahead of their broader release.

Netflix wants to know if the consumers were enjoying the entire collection of content it has spent money producing, but it also wants to learn as much as it can about how to maximise its returns on investment, the report said.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, the streaming giant added three new mobile games to its catalogue — ‘Three Kingdoms’ from Devolver Digital, ‘Cats & Soup from Neowiz, and ‘Hello Kitty Happiness Parade’ from Rogue Games.
