India assumes UNSC presidency vowing to be ‘bridge builder’

0

India took over the presidency of the UN Security Council on Thursday promising to be a “voice of reason and a bridge builder” in a time of global polarisation that has pressed it into inaction.

“One of our strengths is that we are a voice of moderation of voice of reason and a bridge builder and we will walk the talk in the December presidency,” India’s Permanent Representative Ruchira Kamboj said after becoming the first Indian woman to head the Council.

She said that during the presidency, India will hold two sessions to highlight issues most important to it: fighting terrorism and reforming the international system, including the Security Council, stuck in the 1940s.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will preside over the two meetings, on “New Orientation for Reformed Multilateralism” on December 14 and on “Global Approach to Counter Terrorism – Challenges and Way Forward”, the next day.

India will also be holding two side events unveiling a bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the UN headquarters and organizing a group of nations to counter attacks on peacekeepers.

India faces the daunting task of presiding over a Council that is paralyzed on the two most dangerous issues riveting the world, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the North Korean missile launches.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jaishankar have spoken to the leadership of both Russia and Ukraine for a diplomatic solution to the conflict, Kamboj said.

“We are among the few countries, dare I say this, which is speaking to both,” she said.

Asked by a reporter at her news conference if India could change the direction of the Council, she was candid in expressing scepticism, adding, “Hope that but certainly, we will continue to work with a lot of positivity”.

Till 3 p.m., 48.48 % of voters voted for 788 candidates in 89 constituencies in Saurashtra and Kutch, and South Gujarat. The highest voting has been reported in Tapi district at 64.27%, Narmada at 63.88%, and Dangs at 58.55%.

In Saurashtra’s Bhavnagar district it was 45.91 percent, Junagadh district 46.03 %, and Surat 47.01% votes.

Constituency-wise voting shows a huge difference between enthusiasm for voting in tribal reserve seat Nizar at 66.42%, Kaprada (64.45%), whereas in the urban areas it was 42.90% in Rajkot West and 43.42% in Rajkot South.

In Rajkot district, in the most sensitive assembly constituency Gondal, Congress candidate Yatish Desai alleged that the party’s polling agent Jaydeep Parakhiya was beaten up by BJP leader Babubhai Toliya’s son, they attempted bogus voting at Jamvadi polling station of the constituency.

Covid vaccines prevent death in kids regardless of variant: Study

0

Although vaccine effectiveness for infection decreased sharply over time, especially during the Omicron period, the jab is crucial in preventing death among children and adolescents regardless of the predominant circulating variant, suggests a large study published by The BMJ.

The researchers from Argentina said vaccinating children is an important public health measure that will continue to prevent deaths.

It is already well known that mRNA and inactivated covid-19 vaccines are effective in preventing severe disease and infection in children and adolescents, but data on deaths are lacking. Waning protection against infection has also been described, especially for mRNA vaccines, but evidence for inactivated vaccines in children is limited.

To fill this knowledge gap, researchers evaluated the effectiveness of two mRNA vaccines (Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech) and the inactivated Sinopharm vaccine against Covid-19 related infection and death, and short-term waning of immunity, in children and adolescents.

Their findings are based on data for 844,460 children and adolescents (aged 3-17 years).

The results show that the estimated vaccine effectiveness against Covid infection was 61 percent in children and 67 percent in adolescents during the Delta period and 16 percent and 26 percent, respectively, during the Omicron period.

Vaccine effectiveness declined over time, especially during the omicron period, from 38 percent at 15-30 days after vaccination to 2 percent after 60 days or more in children and from 56 percent to 12 percent in adolescents.

Vaccine effectiveness against death related to Covid-19 infection during the Omicron period was 67 percent in children and 98 percent in adolescents.

“In summary, vaccinating children is an important public health measure that will prevent mortality in this population, especially in periods of high viral circulation,” the researchers said.

Rishabh Pant needs to bring clarity in mindset from Tests to white-ball cricket: Saba Karim

0

The lack of runs from Rishabh Pant’s bat in white-ball cricket for India in the recently-concluded series against New Zealand has led to a widespread debate on whether the left-handed batter should continue to be in the limited-overs scheme of things.

On the ability to pull off unorthodox shots in white-ball cricket, Pant made his India debut in T20Is in February 2017, and got his ODI debut in October 2018, two months after entering the Test cricket arena.

For someone who was perceived to set the world alight in white-ball cricket, Pant currently is more of a sure starter in India’s Test eleven than in ODIs, and T20Is, as seen from scores of 6, 11, 15 and 10 in New Zealand.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Saba Karim, who gave Pant his debut T20I cap at Bengaluru in February 2017, believes that the left-hander has to bring clarity in mindset while playing Tests to the white-ball matches for succeeding in limited-overs cricket.

“I am sure you would have heard so many experts talk at length on Rishabh Pant’s failure to convert the kind of performances we have seen him do in Test matches (to the white-ball formats). That’s the kind of work an individual Rishabh Pant has to do.

“When he goes out to bat in Test matches, there is far more clarity in his mindset and the way he approaches the game. That’s the kind of clarity he needs to bring in white-ball cricket also,” said Karim in a select media interaction facilitated by Sony Sports Network.

While Pant averages 43.32 in Tests, it comes down to 34.6 in ODIs and 22.43 in T20Is. Karim was also quick in pointing out that Pant had shown attributes of succeeding in white-ball cricket, citing his unbeaten 125 leading India to chase 260 against England in the ODI series decider at Manchester.

“Having said that, he performed quite well, sometime back against England, where he scored that match-winning hundred. So, if you are capable of doing that, what is required from Rishabh at this stage is to have more consistency in his batting exploits. I do expect him to come good because he has incredible talent and he can always be a match-winner for India.”

In India’s upcoming ODI series against Bangladesh, Pant will be facing competition from Shreyas Iyer, who is in fantastic form in 50-over matches this year, and a returning KL Rahul, who bats at five, as a finisher, whenever the side fielded a full-strength playing eleven in the format.

Karim remarked that his preference would be to pick Iyer and Pant ahead of Rahul as India’s middle order for ODIs against Bangladesh. “Playing all three (Iyer, Rahul, Pant) seems difficult. When you have Virat Kohli coming back in the eleven, he will bat at number three. Then suppose you put Shreyas Iyer at number four, then you are left with only two spots. As of now, India is now looking to have that sixth bowling option from your number one to six.”

“If that is the case then that leaves very little space for one more middle-order batter to come in. That’s a call that the Indian team management has to take. I’ll look at Shreyas Iyer because he has done very well in the New Zealand series. He should come in and occupy the number four spot. Then you are left with Rishabh Pant at number five and you need to have one more bowling option at number six.”

So, where does Rahul, the designated vice-captain for the Bangladesh series, who averages 56.62 in 10 innings in the middle-order at a strike rate of 113.81, including a century and four fifties, fit in India playing eleven?

According to Karim, Rahul is a backup option to the opening pair of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma, though he wishes for the team think-tank to get the right-hander’s role sorted in the set-up quickly. “I look at him more as an opening alternative to Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma. He’s done well as an opener for India and is such a classy player. It’s just a matter of time before he can strike form. Having said that, I really don’t know at what number he will come in.

“If not as an opener, do we use him in the middle order? If we do, can we give him a long rope there because there are so many other contenders in the frame? That’s the kind of ambiguity I see in the current 15. This is something that needs to be settled as soon as possible by the captain and the team management.”

The Bangladesh vs India – 1st ODI will be broadcasted live on SONY SPORTS TEN 5 (English), SONY SPORTS TEN 3 (Hindi), and SONY SPORTS TEN 4 (Tamil & Telugu) channels on December 4.

Arjun pens a cryptic post about karma after slamming news portal

After slamming a media portal calling it “unethical” and “insensitive” for a report that his girlfriend Malaika Arora is pregnant, actor Arjun Kapoor has now shared a cryptic post about karma on his social media.

He took to his Instagram stories and wrote: “Karma comes after everyone eventually. You can’t get away with screwing people over your whole life, I don’t care who you are. What goes around comes around. That’s how it works. Sooner or later, the universe will serve you the revenge that you deserve.”

Malaika had also dismissed her pregnancy rumors by calling them “disgusting”.

A report claimed that Arjun and Malaika, who have been dating since 2019, were expecting their first child. The ‘Ishaqzaade’ star debunked all the claims immediately.

He wrote on social media: “This is the lowest that you could have gone and you have done it by being casual. Insensitive and absolutely unethical. In carrying garbage news. This journalist has been writing such pieces regularly and getting away with it because we tend to ignore these fake gossip articles while they spread across media and become the truth. This is not done. Don’t dare to play with our personal lives.”

Twitter bans over 44K accounts for policy violations in India

0

Twitter banned 44,611 accounts promoting child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity in India between September 26 and October 25, as Elon Musk took over.

In the earlier period between August 26 and September 25, the company banned 52,141 such bad accounts in India.

The micro-blogging platform, going through a churning under Musk, also took down 4,014 accounts for promoting terrorism on its platform in the country.

Twitter, in its monthly report in compliance with the new IT Rules, 2021, said that it received 582 complaints from users in India in the same time frame through its grievance redressal mechanisms, and took action on just 20 of those URLs.

It is in stark difference from the earlier period (August 26 and September 25) when Twitter received 157 complaints from users in India and took action on 129 of those URLs.

In its new report, Twitter said that it processed 61 grievances which were appealing Twitter account suspensions. “These were all resolved and the appropriate responses were sent,” said Twitter.

“We overturned none of these account suspensions after reviewing the specifics of the situation. All accounts remain suspended. We also received 12 requests related to general questions about Twitter accounts during this reporting period,” said the company.

In October, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal said the replies received from Twitter in the child pornography complaints were incomplete and the Commission was not satisfied with them.

Musk has already expressed grave concerns over reports about the presence of tweets soliciting child pornography on Twitter.

Under the new IT Rules 2021, big digital and social media platforms, with more than 5 million users, have to publish monthly compliance reports.

Not scared, ready to cooperate with ED, says KCR’s daughter Kavitha

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s daughter K. Kavitha, whose name figured in the investigation by Enforcement Directorate (ED) into the Delhi liquor policy scam, said on Thursday that she will fully cooperate with the central agency and is not scared of anything.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader alleged that the BJP government at the Centre is resorting to cheap tactics to damage her reputation through media leaks.

Addressing the media and her supporters at her residence here, Kavitha told Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop using central agencies like ED, CBI, and IT to target his political opponents and come to power.

“We have already said we are ready to face any probe. If the agency comes and questions, we will definitely reply but if you resort to media leaks to damage the reputation of leaders, people will definitely fight back,” she said.

Kavitha, a member of the Telangana Legislative Council, also dared the Modi government to put her in jail. “If you want to put me in jail, do it. There is no problem but we will not stop working for the people and we will continue to expose the failures of the BJP,” she said.

The former MP alleged that the ED, CBI, and IT cases against ministers, MLAs, and other TRS leaders were BJP’s reaction to TRS exposing its conspiracy to topple the democratically elected government.

“You conspired to topple the government and since we exposed this before people, as a reaction ED, CBI, and IT cases are booked against ministers, MLAs, and MLCs,” she said.

Kavitha made it clear that she is not scared. “We are not scared. At the most what you can do. Will you hang us? At the most, you can put us in jail. Do it. As long as people are with us and we are working sincerely for people, there is nothing to fear,” she said.

The TRS alleged that the entire country knows that during the last few years, the BJP has toppled democratically elected governments in nine states and came to power through manipulation.

“In every state, ED comes a year before elections. ED comes before Modi. There is nothing new in Telangana as the elections are to be held here next year,” she said.

She advised Narendra Modi to stop using central agencies to come to power. “Go to people, tell them what you will do for them, and get democratically elected but using CBI, ED to win and that too in politically conscious Telangana is not possible,” she said.

Kavitha’s name has surfaced in the remand report filed by the ED in a Delhi court on Wednesday for the remand of businessman Amit Arora in the Delhi liquor policy scam.

According to the remand report, businessman Vijay Nair, who has already been arrested in the case, received kickbacks of Rs 100 crore on behalf of AAP leaders from a group, called ‘South Group’.

According to the report, the group is controlled by Sarath Reddy, Kavitha, and Magenta Srinivasulu Reddy. Sarath Reddy, one of the directors of pharma major Aurobindo Pharma, has already been arrested.

Srinivasulu Reddy is a member of Parliament belonging to Andhra Pradesh’s ruling party YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).

Kycia Knight, Shemaine Campbelle return to West Indies squad for first two ODIs against England

0

Kycia Knight and Shemaine Campbelle on Thursday made a return to the West Indies squad for the first two women’s ODI series against England, to be held on December 4 and 6 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

Though the hosts will be boosted by the return of Kycia and Shemaine, the two keeper-batters, after recovering from injuries, experienced all-rounder Stafanie Taylor is still unavailable as she is still recovering from the knee injury sustained during the third ODI against New Zealand in September.

“The return of Shemaine Campbelle and Kycia Knight to the ODI squad after missing the last series due to injury will bolster the team in the absence of the experienced Stafanie Taylor who is still recuperating from an injury sustained during September’s series against New Zealand.”

“The CG United ODI matches are vital as points earned will take us a step closer towards automatic qualification for the next ICC Women’s World Cup in 2025,” said Lead Selector Ann Browne-John in an official statement.

The ODI Series is the second opportunity for the West Indies, currently at fifth place, to gain points in the ICC Women’s Championship (IWC) after losing their opening series to New Zealand 2-1 at home in September.

England, ranked seventh in the table, will also be looking to grab some points after suffering a 3-0 series sweep at the hands of India in home conditions.

“This series against England comes on the heels of the New Zealand tour to the West Indies and continues our important preparation for the upcoming Tri Series against India and South Africa and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup to follow. It gives the players a great opportunity to develop and push for final selection for the Tri-Series and World Cup,” added Ann Browne-John.

The top five teams in the IWC will automatically book a berth for the Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2025, to be held in India. The remaining five teams in the IWC will have to go through the Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier to qualify for the 50-over tournament.

After the conclusion of the ODI series, a five-match T20I series will happen. The first game will be held in Antigua on December 11, while the rest of the four matches will happen in Barbados till December 22.

The series will provide both teams with important preparation ahead of the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa which begins on February 10. The West Indies and England are drawn to play against each other in Group 2 of the tournament.

West Indies squad for first two ODIs: Hayley Matthews (Captain), Shakera Selman (Vice Captain), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shemaine Campbelle, Afy Fletcher, Cherry Ann Fraser, Shabika Gajnabi, Sheneta Grimmond, Chinelle Henry, Kycia Knight, Chedean Nation, Karishma Ramharack, Kaysia Schultz and Rashada Williams.

Twitter to show you more tweets from people you don’t follow

0

Twitter will now show you more tweets from people you don’t follow, as Elon Musk continues to tinker with the platform in order to woo more users and make more money.

The company said that it will expand recommendations to all users to give them the best content.

“We want to ensure everyone on Twitter sees the best content on the platform, so we’re expanding recommendations to all users, including those who may not have seen them in the past,” Twitter Support posted.

Signals for recommended tweets can include things like user interests, topics they follow, tweets they engage with, and even Tweets people in their network like.

Based on these signals and more, Twitter will show users content it thinks they will be interested in.

“Think of them as personalized suggestions that are shown to you based on actions you take on Twitter,” the company had said earlier in a blog post.

Recommendations can appear in your Home timeline, certain places within the Explore tab, and elsewhere on Twitter.

According to the company, its recommendations team partners closely with its Health, Trust and Safety, and Machine Learning Ethics teams to make sure “we’re recommending high-quality content”.

The company said that it also provides tools to manage recommendations and “clear ways to tell us when we do and don’t get it right. This is an important part of enabling you to use Twitter on your own terms”.

Selecting “Not interested in this Tweet/Topic” from the Tweet menu, on the other hand, will tell Twitter that a user likes to see less of that type of content.

YouTube fixes crash issues on iOS app

0

Google-owned YouTube on Thursday said that it has fixed crash issues on the iOS application that “many” users reported.

From its TeamYouTube account, the video-streaming platform tweeted: “Hi, we’re aware that many of you using the YouTube app on iOS devices may be experiencing crashes. We’re so sorry about this & have begun working on a fix! updates soon.”

It later claimed that all the issues have been fixed. “The YouTube app on iOS devices should now be working fine with no crashes! Thanks for hanging in there,” it added.

DownDetector, an online website outage monitoring platform, revealed that more than 8,000 users reported different crash issues across the US. Several users took to the microblogging platform Twitter to report the issues.

While one user asked, “Anyone else experiencing YouTube crashing?”, another said, “Anyone else having major and repeated #Youtube crash issues on #Apple devices?”

In April this year, the video-sharing platform suffered a global outage as users reported several issues such as receiving error messages while trying to watch videos along with logging problems.

YouTube users also reported issues with accessing website elements like the sidebar navigation, switching accounts, and the Setting menus, for example.

0

Polling for the first phase of the Gujarat Assembly polls started at 8 a.m. on Thursday as 788 candidates fight for the 89 seats in 19 districts. The voting will continue till 5 p.m. Long queues were visible in the rural as well as urban areas.

The voters of Saurashtra and Kutch will be voting on 54 seats, and those in South Gujarat will vote for 35 MLAs.

Bigwigs whose fate will be sealed in the EVM in the first phase include education minister Jitu Vaghani, finance minister Kanu Desai, agriculture minister Raghavji Patel, minister of state for home Harsh Sanghvi, former civil supplies minister Jayesh Radadiya.

From the Congress, former leader of opposition Paresh Dhanani, former GPCC president Arjun Modhvadia, party’s three working presidents — Lalit Kagathra, Ambrish Der, and Rutvik Makwana — are contesting the polls.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called upon the people in Gujarat to vote enthusiastically. He tweeted: “Today is the first phase of the Gujarat elections. I call upon all those voting today, particularly first-time voters to exercise their franchise in record numbers.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also made an appeal to the voters: “In the last two decades, Gujarat has become synonymous with development and peace, which every Indian is proud of. But this was possible because of the strong government elected by the people of Gujarat.

“I appeal to the voters of the first phase to vote with unprecedented enthusiasm and numbers to continue this development journey.”

UP: Groom kisses bride, she refuses to marry him

0

This kiss did not seal the relationship, it broke. An angry young bride called off her wedding after the groom kissed her on stage in front of nearly 300 guests.

The groom kissed her right after the couple exchanged garlands on Tuesday night. The bride immediately walked off from the dais and later called the police.

The 23-year-old bride, a graduate, said the groom kissed her to win a bet with his friends, and now she is “doubtful about his character”.

Both parties were taken to the police station where the bride alleged that the groom touched her inappropriately but she initially ignored it.

“When he kissed me, I felt insulted. He did not care about my self-respect and misbehaved in front of several guests,” she alleged.

Police tried to mediate, but the bride refused to relent after which the wedding was called off and the guests returned home.

Her mother said, “The groom was provoked by his friends. We tried to convince my daughter but she refused to marry him. We have decided to wait for a few days and let her take some time to decide.”

The police said that “Technically the couple is married as the rituals were done by the time the incident happened. We will decide what to do after waiting for a couple of days for things to cool down.”

Interestingly, brides in Shahjahanpur and Lakhimpur Kheri had canceled their weddings because the grooms broke into a ‘Nagin’ dance.

S&P Global forecasts India’s growth at 6% for 2023, 7% for 2022

0

Pegging India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth at seven percent for 2022 and six percent for 2023, global credit rating agency S&P Global Ratings said the forecast has been lowered by 0.5 percent for the next two fiscal years.

In a research report, S&P Global Ratings said India’s forecast has been lowered by 0.5 percentage points for the next two fiscal years on slower global demand. Regional growth remains healthy overall.

Meanwhile, at the global level, S&P Global Ratings said, global activity has held up surprisingly well so far despite a torrid pace of policy rate hikes and consistently high geopolitical uncertainties.

“Recent outperformance will not last in our view. We see significant slowdowns ahead. Labour markets are key to determining the depth of the downturn,” the report said.

Getting inflation under control while minimizing damage to output remains the main macro policy challenge; the lagged effects of rate hikes will make assessing this difficult. Given the big inflation miss over the past two years, policymakers will err on the tough side, the report said.

According to S&P Global Ratings, its forecasts are generally higher for 2022 relative to the previous round, but broadly unchanged for 2023-2025.

Inflation forecasts are higher and stickier. Risks are on the downside. The year 2023 will be a revelatory one.

“We will learn how much monetary tightening is needed to curb inflation, how deep any recession will be, and the early contours of the post-Covid-economy. We suspect the post-Covid world will differ from the pre-Covid world across several dimensions,” S&P Global Ratings said.

China’s recovery in Q3, driven in part by state-financed industrial production growth, masked underlying weaknesses. Organic growth remained soft and sentiment remained weak amid a broadly unchanged Covid stance and a property downturn, the report states.

Growth in the rest of Asia is holding up well, with the more domestically oriented economies of India and Indonesia outperforming.

Poland qualify for knockouts on goal difference despite Mexico’s win over Saudi Arabia

0

Mexico’s 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia wasn’t enough for El Tri to qualify for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage with Poland snatching the second qualifying spot in Group C behind Argentina.

After drawing blanks in their opening two matches, Mexico scored twice in the space of five minutes of the second half to give Mexico a 2-0 lead on Wednesday as the Saudi defense appeared to collapse.

Henry Martin and Luis Chavez scored for Mexico in the thrilling Group C match but agonizingly went out of the World Cup on goal difference on a night of incredible drama in Doha.

With Argentina beating Poland 2-0 in Group C at Stadium 974 and Mexico leading by the same scoreline at Lusail Stadium in the 94th minute, Gerardo Martino’s side needed one more goal to prevent them from going out according to FIFA’s fair play rule.

“It is a great success after all those years. France will be a big challenge. We didn’t play a perfect game but we will analyze it and will try to have fun and attack,” Polish star striker Robert Lewandowski said.

It was high drama because the second place between Poland and Mexico was minutes away from being decided as a fourth tiebreaker, the Fair Play standings at the tournament were based on yellow and red cards, which would have also seen Poland ahead.

Both would have been tied on points, an identical 2-2 goal difference, and having drawn their game 0-0, had Mexico won 2-0.

Mexico needed a win to advance, and, after coming close several times in the first half, Martin opened the scoring by tapping in off a corner kick two minutes after the restart, and Chavez curled a 25m free-kick into the top right corner in the 52nd.

Chavez’s free-kick from about 30 yards got a wonderful amount of whip onto it, curling it past the keeper for his first international goal. Knowing they had another goal to catch Poland, Mexico pressed on but had goals from Hirving Lozano in the 55th and Uriel Antuna in the 87th disallowed for offside.

But Salem Al Dawsari’s injury-time consolation goal for Saudi Arabia sent the distraught Mexicans home, leaving the Polish players to celebrate across the turf.

The Mexicans needed one more goal to overtake Poland on goal difference and get through the group, but it was the Saudis who scored in the dying moments of the game making it 2-1.

Poland qualified from the group stage of a World Cup tournament for the first time since 1986. They had failed to do so in each of their previous three appearances at the tournament prior to this year (2002, 2006, and 2018).

Argentina to take on Australia in last 16 clash after fluent 2-0 win over Poland

0

Lionel Messi missed a controversial first-half penalty for Argentina against Poland but his side recovered in time to register a 2-0 win, their second successive one, and move into the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup as Group C winners.

On Wednesday night at the 974 Stadium, one goal apiece from Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez helped two-time champions Argentina to collect full points.

La Albiceleste scored both goals in the second half to finish with six points, having started their campaign with a shocking 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia in the Group C opener.

Argentina as group winners will take on Australia, which finished second in Group D. Poland with one win against Saudi Arabia and one loss, the same as Mexico, qualified on account of better goal difference over their Latin American opponent. Saudi Arabia finished at the bottom with three points for the lone win against Argentina.

Poland which finished behind the group leaders Argentina also qualified for the last 16 stages and will take on defending champions France, which despite their 1-0 loss to Tunisia finished as group winners.

Dider Deschamps’s side aiming to retain the trophy will aim to continue their strong start to the tournament in the hope of reaching the quarter-finals.

Argentina and Poland join Australia, Portugal, Brazil, England, France, the Netherlands, Senegal, and the USA, making it ten teams making it to the last 16 stages with another six sets to join the qualified teams in the next stage of the tournament.

“It was a very important victory. We were under pressure after the first game but have now won the group. Very happy to score my first goal for Argentina. Today was an amazing moment for me and for my family. It was a big moment for me and I will always remember it. We played a big match,” Brighton’s Mac Allister said.

Mac Allister their last 16 opponents Australia will be tough.

“We think they are a good team. I played against them in the Olympic Games, and we lost. So we know how difficult they are, of course, not the same team and we are not the same team but they are a very good team and it will be a tough side.”

Argentina was the dominant team in the first session in which Messi’s struck two shots on target in the opening ten minutes as Argentina battered at the door of Poland.

They continued to rack up shots through the first half, including a stunning attempt from Rodrigo de Paul from the corner flag.

Julian Alvarez – replacing Lautaro Martinez in the starting line-up – also had a shot blocked from close range in the 36th minute.

Then controversy struck when Messi was awarded a penalty after a VAR review. Poland keeper Wojciech Szczesny had attempted to punch away an Argentina cross but missed, and his hand struck the head of Messi at the back post. Messi had already headed the ball wide of the upright.

But, in a stunning twist, Szczesny saved Messi’s penalty with a brilliant diving block – his second penalty save of the tournament.

Argentina playing their best football of the tournament, which will please Scaloni ahead of the round of 16, overcame the penalty save with two goals in the second session.

Argentina went into the lead 60 seconds after the restart with a goal by Brighton midfielder Mac Allister. Molina got to the touchline and cut the ball back where Mac Allister was waiting – the 23-year-old didn’t make a clean connection as he swept it with his right foot, but the direction was perfect and just kissed the far post after passing Szczesny.

The second goal had been coming. It was a brilliant finish from Alvarez. Enzo Fernandez drives at the defense and finds Alvaraz, who takes a touch, swivels, and blasts a rocket into the top corner. A brilliant, instinctive finish from the Manchester city man in the 67th minute confirmed Argentina as group winners.

The Indian men’s hockey team broke its 12-match winless streak against world No. 1 Australia with a 4-3 victory in the third game to stay alive in the five-match Test series at the Mate Stadium, here on Wednesday. This was India’s 13th win over Australia in 65 hockey matches and their first since 2016.

It was Mandeep Singh who set up Akashdeep Singh to score the winner for India while other goals were scored by Harmanpreet Singh (12′), Abhishek (47′), and Shamsher Singh (57′). For Australia, Jack Welch (25), Aran Zalewski (32′) and Nathan Ephraums (59′) scored.

After emphasizing the strong defensive structure on the eve of the match, India captain Harmanpreet Singh ensured his team followed it with perfection as they impressed with their one-on-one defense to contain the Australian forward line who have shown rampaging form so far in this five-match series.

India got off the blocks swiftly, pushing Australia on the backfoot when they converted from a penalty corner in the 12th minute. It was Hardik Singh who gave the breakthrough when he created the PC via an aerial ball into the circle, which was poorly intercepted by the Australian defender leading to a dangerous play foul in the D.

Harmanpreet Singh, who has been in great form, was on target with a powerful drag flick that went past Johan Durst at lightning speed. This was Harmanpreet’s fourth goal of the tour.

Australia had a chance to level the score early in the second quarter when they were awarded a PC after India’s foot foul in the circle. But experienced India goalie PR Sreejesh was on-point with his saves. He first blocked Jeremy Hayward’s drag flick and then stopped two more shots on goal along with his wingman Surender supporting him.

However, Australia didn’t let go of the opportunity when they won their second PC in the 25th minute. Though Sreejesh did well to block Hayward’s flick, Welch nicked the ball past him on the rebound.

Australia furthered their scoreline at the start of the third quarter through a well-executed PC scored by Aran Zalewski in the 32nd minute. However, India remained calm in their pursuit and continued to hold on to the momentum – taking the match down to the wire as had been the trend in the previous two matches.

India upped the ante in their attack, which resulted in their second PC of the match in the 47th minute. A good injection by Abhishek was well-received by Harmanpreet only to set up the injector to deflect the ball into the post.

The variation worked with Abhishek perfecting it. Moments later, he worked in tandem with Shamsher Singh to win India’s third PC. Unfortunately, the chance went begging after a poor execution.

With just four minutes left for the final hooter, Shamsher helped India win their fourth PC and this time, he was immaculate in his effort to pick up a rebound off Jugraj Singh’s drag flick to score his team’s third goal.

The final few minutes were intense, with Australia scoring off a PC in the 59th minute. But fine coordination between Mandeep Singh and Akashdeep Singh ensured India finished well.

“It was a better defensive effort today. We put up a good fight back on a couple of occasions,” said India’s Chief Coach Graham Reid after the match.

However, he still warned the players against giving away too many chances to their opposition. In this case, conceding eight PCs.

“While our PC conversion rate was good, we probably still gave them too many opportunities and relied a little bit too much on our goalkeeper. Having said that, sometimes it is good to graft out a win and I think that’s what the team did today. We fought hard and it was a good character-building game for us ahead of the World Cup in January,” the coach said.
