IND v NZ, 3rd ODI: Mitchell did a fantastic job of bowling with the wind, says Williamson

0

Though rain played spoilsport in the third and final ODI between India and New Zealand at Christchurch, skipper Kane Williamson lauded all-rounder Daryl Mitchell for his fantastic spell of 3/25 which was instrumental in bowling out visitors’ for 219.

“The seamers were getting something from the wicket. Daryl has been hanging out for a bowl for ages. He did a fantastic job bowling with the wind. (Adam) Milne (3/57) felt a niggle but didn’t want to stop,” said Williamson in the post-match presentation ceremony.

With the white-ball series being massively affected by rain, Williamson admitted that rain had been following them all the time. “It’s been going on reasonably well. The first game became series-defining. A little bit odd to have so much rain. We knew that 20 overs would constitute a match, but we could see the weather coming, it has been following us.”

New Zealand will now have a break before touring to Pakistan for two Tests and three ODIs from December 2022 to January 2023. “The focus shifts to the Test arena (for the Pakistan series). There’s a freshness to that, new faces.”

“Guys get a break now and that’s important too. Been pretty busy. But it’ll be good to have time off. We will regroup as a Test team after the break,” added Williamson.

Left-handed wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham was named Player of the Series and was in praise of how his team-mates fared in Christchurch. “It was a nice series for the whole group and personally as well. Bit of a shame I didn’t get any play in the next two games. We bowled fantastically well this morning. ”

“Finn played uncharacteristic in terms of his usual aggressive way. The ball was moving around and it did enough out of the right lengths. Hit the right lengths and got some movement off the surface and restricted them to that total. Mitchell did a fantastic job too.”

Latham signed off by saying there was friendly banter amongst players from both teams during rain interruptions. “Lot of the guys have played each other, especially the IPL so there is some friendly banter. Certainly not cold for us but very cold for them (smiles).”

Most foreigners in Canada stay in province that give them study permit: Report

0

Foreign students in Canada, which includes a sizeable chunk of Indians, tend to remain in the province which gave them study permits, for their next period of education or work.

According to a recent report by The Conference Board of Canada, for every region except the Atlantic provinces, more than half of former international students employed in the country were working in the province of study.

More than 60 percent of the students, who studied in any of Canada’s 10 provinces or three territories, remained in each region when their first study permit expired, the ‘After School: Keeping International Students In-Province’ report said.

Quebec showed the highest international student retention rate of around 85 percent, followed by Manitoba and Alberta (80 percent).

British Columbia, Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Saskatchewan showed retention rates between 70 and 80 percent.

New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Canada’s three territories retained between 60 percent and 70 percent of their foreign students a year later.

The research said that evolving International education and the shifts in international student enrolment could shape immigration and settlement patterns across Canada.

“During their studies, students build connections to their peers, post-secondary institutions, and community in Canada. These connections could increase the likelihood that international students settle in the community or province where they studied,” the report stated.

It further said that most foreigners stayed in their initial province of study even after three years. In nine of Canada’s 13 provinces and territories, more than 50 percent of international students stayed in-province or in-territory.

This excluded the Atlantic provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick. According to the research, in 2019 half of all new study permit holders came from India alone.

Canada is the second most popular destination for Indian students with 1.83 lakh of them pursuing education at various levels in the country.

To facilitate retention in the province of study, the research suggested an increase in Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) slots for international students.

“A robust post-secondary education system that offers programs aligned with local labor market needs will help international students connect their studies to the communities where they live, the study said.

Indian agrifood startups get record $4.6 bn investment in FY22

0

Indian agrifood startups received a record $4.6 billion in investment in FY 2021-22, up 119 percent year-over-year, as the country overtook China as Asia-Pacific’s biggest funder of agrifood-tech innovation, a report showed on Wednesday.

Farmtech startups raised $1.5 billion across 140 deals, a 185 percent year-over-year increase, according to the report by VC firms AgFunder and Omnivore.

Restaurant marketplaces and e-grocery startups secured close to $3 billion, around 66 percent, of the total investment. The deal activity also increased to 234 in FY2022 compared to 189 deals in FY2021.

Downstream startups raised $3.8 billion, a 115 percent increase from $1.77 billion in FY2021. This significant growth is due to Swiggy, which raised $1.2 billion accounting for 38 percent of total investment in Indian agrifood startups. eGrocery startups raised $934 million across 42 deals, a 4x jump from $244 million across 25 deals in FY2021.

“To see investment levels surpass all other countries in the Asia-Pacific region and compete on the global stage is indicative of the impressive range and depth of innovations coming from the country and potential to impact the agrifood industry as a whole,” said Michael Dean, founding partner, AgFunder.

Investment in online restaurants and meal kits saw a remarkable recovery at $301 million in FY2022, almost 4x more than $64 million in FY2021, said the report.

Upstream investment leaped 300 percent to $1.2 billion up from $312 million. The participation of generalist VCs, bigger deal sizes, and higher deal count contributed to this increase.

“It has caught the attention of generalist VCs the world over who understand that agrifood tech is key to the transformation of India’s massive agricultural sector and rural economy,” said Mark Kahn, Managing Partner, Omnivore.

Oscars 2023 will include all 23 categories presented live on air

All 23 categories will be aired during the Oscars 2023 telecast. Bill Kramer, CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, announced the news exclusively to ‘Variety’ on Tuesday. “I can confirm that all categories will be included in the live telecast,” he said.

The news comes after eight different Oscar categories — original score, makeup and hairstyling, documentary short, film editing, production design, animated short, live action short, and sound — were cut from the main telecast at the 2022 Academy Awards, leading to much outrage across the film industry.

“We are committed to having a show that celebrates the artisans, the arts and sciences, and the collaborative nature of moviemaking. This is very much what the mission of the Academy is, and I am very hopeful that we can do a show that celebrates all components of moviemaking in an entertaining and engaging way,” Kramer told ‘Variety’.

Since his appointment in June, Kramer said he’s had many conversations about restoring the missing categories. “We are thrilled to be in a position to execute that.”

Jimmy Kimmel will return for the third time to host the Oscars. Kramer said he was excited to have the late-night host back. “I love having someone hosting the show who knows live television. I think that’s so critical,” he said.

When asked about what else audiences can expect from the telecast, Kramer said: “All I will say right now is that our anniversary, the 95th Oscars, is extremely important to us. I think it sets a really interesting rhythm for our 100th. You see this in the museum, I think we are able to celebrate our legacy while bringing the Academy into the future and the show will reflect that.”

Executive producers and showrunners Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner of White Cherry Entertainment will produce the Oscars, and Weiss returns, for the eighth consecutive year, as the show’s director.

The 95th Academy Awards will take place on March 12, 2023, live from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The ceremony will be televised live on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide.

IND v NZ, 3rd ODI: Washington Sundar’s 51 carries India to a modest 219 against New Zealand

0

Washington Sundar slammed his maiden ODI fifty to carry India to a modest 219 against New Zealand in the third and final match of the series at Hagley Oval on Wednesday.

On a pitch, where there was a lot of grass and lateral movement, and with overcast conditions, India’s innings never really got going, till Sundar stood up to hit five fours and a six in a 64-ball knock to take the visitors past the 200-mark.

Apart from him, Shreyas Iyer also played a handy knock of 49 as the rest of the batters struggled and perished to a disciplined bowling show by New Zealand. For the hosts, Daryl Mitchell being used as the fifth bowler was a master stroke, picking 3/25 in his seven overs.

Adam Milne, coming in for spinner Michael Bracewell, got three wickets for 57 runs in his ten overs. Tim Southee picked two scalps while Matt Henry, despite being wicketless, gave away just 29 runs in his very effective ten overs.

Brief Scores:

India 219 all out in 47.3 overs (Washington Sundar 51, Shreyas Iyer 49; Daryl Mitchell 3/25, Adam Milne 3/57) against New Zealand.

Telangana governor anguished over manner of Sharmila’s arrest

Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan has termed “disturbing” the visuals of YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) leader Y. S. Sharmila’s car being towed away while she was inside.

The governor expressed concern over the developments and the consequent arrest of the YSRTP president and former chief minister Dr. Y.S. Rajshekhar Reddy’s daughter Y.S. Sharmila.

Tamilisai took to Twitter to react to Tuesday’s incidents. She tagged the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Union Home Minister, and Director General of Police of Telangana.

“The Governor expressed anguish at the way Smt. Sharmila was arrested and expressed concern about her safety and health condition. The visuals of towing away of her car, when she was inside the car, were disturbing,” reads the tweet from her official handle.

Tamilisai Soundararajan stated that whatever may be the political background or ideology, women leaders need to be treated in a more dignified and respectful way.

“Women cadres & women leaders need to be treated in a more dignified & respectful way in such situations,” she said.

Sharmila, who is the sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, was arrested amid high drama on Raj Bhavan Road on Tuesday when she was marching to the chief minister’s residence to stage a protest against an attack on her padyatra in Warangal district by the supporters of ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) the previous day.

Sharmila, who was driving a car damaged in the attack by TRS men, refused to get down. The police then called a towing vehicle, which towed the car away with the leader still sitting inside it.

The YSRTP leader was shifted to the SR Nagar police station. She, along with six others, was booked for unlawful assembly, public nuisance, criminal intimidation, insulting the modesty of a woman, using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty, and theft.

The police on Tuesday night produced them before a magistrate, who granted them bail.

Twitter stops enforcing Covid misleading information policy

0

Twitter has paused support for enforcing the Covid-19 misleading information policy on its platform. As per an update on the company’s blog, “Twitter is no longer enforcing the Covid-19 misleading information policy”.

Under its Covid misinformation policy, Twitter removed “demonstrably false or potentially misleading content that has the highest risk of causing harm.”

However, it is still not clear why Twitter has taken this action, as Covid is not gone yet and countries like China are reeling under its aftereffects.

The move, according to reports, can lead to a surge in conspiracy theories around vaccines on the platform like “vaccines now kill more people than Covid”.

In December 2020, Twitter announced it to remove tweets making false or misleading claims about Covid-19 vaccinations and label such fake claims, prioritizing the removal of the most harmful misleading information.

Twitter later labeled Tweets that contained misleading information about Covid vaccinations and permanently suspended repeat offenders.

The micro-blogging platform introduced a strike system against such misleading tweets and five or more strikes will result in permanent suspension of the account.

According to Twitter, the expanded policy included false claims that suggest immunizations and vaccines are used to intentionally cause harm to or control populations and statements about vaccines that invoke a deliberate conspiracy.

Cyber thug dupes judges’ wife of Rs 13L in UP

0

The wife of a judge has been duped Rs 13 lakh by cyber thugs while she was trying to increase the limit of her credit card.

In her FIR, the complainant informed the police that she wanted to increase the limit of her credit card for which she searched for her private bank’s helpline number on the Internet.

When she dialled the number, a fraudster posing as the bank representative asked her to transfer Rs 15,000 to a bank account to increase her credit limit, assuring her that the amount would be refunded on November 25.

The complainant claimed that when she did not get the refund, she again called the number. The fraudster sent her a link and asked her to fill out a form that sought her bank account details.

“I did not get my money back and on November 28, a sum of Rs 13 lakh was taken from my bank account as a loan,” she said.

Inspector, cyber cell, Ranjeet Singh said that prima facie it appeared that the fraudster took the remote-control access of her phone, thereby getting the details of her account and got a loan sanctioned. “We have lodged an FIR. Efforts are on to find the location of the fraudsters,” he said.

Singh said that fraudsters were putting out their numbers on Google claiming it to be a customer care helpline number. They ask callers to download an app that gives them access to their mobile phones, which in turn helps them get access to their bank details and OTPs.

“Do not share banking details such as card number, CVV, ATM PIN, banking passwords, and one-time passwords (OTP) with anyone over the phone or e-mail under any circumstance. As a general practice, no bank or reputed company asks its customers for confidential details over the phone or email,” the officer said.

Wanted UP SP MLA booked for travelling on forged Aadhaar

The absconding Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki has been booked for boarding a New Delhi to Mumbai flight on a forged Aadhaar card on November 11.

The MLA and his brother Rizwan were already wanted by the Kanpur police for allegedly setting a woman’s house on fire to grab her 365 square yard plot in Jajmau’s Defence Colony.

Anand Prakash Tiwari, joint commissioner of police (law and order) said that a senior woman SP leader Noori Shauqat and three others, who allegedly helped Solanki obtain the Aadhaar card, have been arrested. The three others were Ashraf Ali, Anwar Mansoori, and Akhtar Mansoori. Two more people named Ishrat Ali and Ammar Ilahi were yet to be arrested, said Tiwari.

The MLA flew from Delhi to Mumbai using this forged identity card to evade arrest. The Aadhaar card carried his photograph but had his name mentioned as Ashraf Ali, the officer said. Tiwari said the fresh FIR was lodged with the Gwaltoli police.

“The police have seized the computer and other gadgets that were used to forge the Aadhaar,” he said, adding the police charged Solanki and six others under sections 212, 419, 420, 467, 468, 471, and 120-B of the IPC.

Several police teams were conducting raids in several cities for the arrest of the MLA. While on his trail, the police team found that Solanki had gone to Mumbai from New Delhi.

The police obtained CCTV footage of airport terminals in the two cities that confirmed Solanki’s entry and exit after the said flight landed, said the JCP.

The footage also purportedly showed that some people had come to the airport to receive the MLA. “All these people knew that Solanki was wanted in a criminal offense and that he was traveling on forged documents. They have also been made an accused,” he added.

The FIR came ahead of the hearing on Solanki’s anticipatory bail plea in a district court. His lawyer, Naresh Chandra Tripathi, alleged that the MLA was being framed.

Ukraine’s ‘surrender hotline’ for Russian soldiers gets 100 enquiries a day

0

A scheme set up by the Ukraine government under which Russian soldiers can call a hotline or enter details through messenger apps if they want to surrender is getting about 100 inquiries a day, the media reported.

According to officials in Kiev, through the “I Want To Live” scheme which started in September, Russian troops can choose the best way by either calling on the hotline number or texting on Telegram and WhatsApp to surrender to Ukrainian forces, reports the BBC.

The officials said that they have had over 3,500 contacts from invading personnel, as well as their families.

The BBC report said that there has been an increase since Russian President Vladimir Putin mobilized hundreds of thousands of Russian men, and since the city of Kherson was liberated.

Once they surrender, the Russian prisoners of war (PoWs) can be used as currency in future exchanges, it added. According to a Ukrainian call handler, the evenings are the busiest, when troops have more spare time and can sneak off and make a call. “First of all, we hear a voice, mainly male,” she told the BBC.

“It’s often part-desperate, part-frustrated because they don’t fully understand how the hotline works, or whether it’s just a set-up. There’s also curiosity because many call not to surrender but to find out how they could if needed. It’s different every time,” she added.

The call handler, however, did not give out the exact number of Russians she helped, or exactly how the process takes place. They are just told to share their location before being given further instructions, she told the BBC.

Vitalii Matviyenko, who leads the project, said that it was created to help save the lives of those who surrender.

“We especially want to target the partially mobilized who not only can’t fight but are thrown in as cannon fodder. This project was created so their lives will be guaranteed if they surrender voluntarily,” he was quoted as saying.

FIFA World Cup: Senegal defeat Ecuador 2-1 to qualify for knock-out stage

0

A match-winner from Kalidou Koulibaly helped Senegal over the challenge of Ecuador 2-1 in the Group A match of the FIFA World Cup and to qualify for the knockout stage.

At the Khalifa International Stadium, all three goals came from players based in England. Senegal ranked 18 on the FIFA ranking computer went into the lead in the 44th minute through Watford’s Ismaila Sarr penalty conversion and went into the halftime break leading 1-0.

In the second half, Ecuador, ranked 44, hit back through Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo in the 67th minute to draw level. The lead lasted for just three minutes with Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly scoring Senegal’s second goal of the match to give the lead to the African Cup of Nations champions.

The Lions of Teranga thus will make it to the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time in 20 years.

The African champions, who are in Qatar without Idrissa Gueye and Sadio Mane, are to meet Group B winners, a group that consists of England, USA, Iran, and Wales. The last round matches of the group B take place on Tuesday with Iran taking on USA and Wales meeting England in the ‘local derby’.

Senegal, which lost to The Netherlands 2-0, finished their league engagements with six points with two wins and one loss to finish second in the group behind leaders Netherlands. The Europeans completed their league engagements with two wins and one draw, recording identical 2-0 wins over Senegal and Qatar. Their only draw came against Ecuador 1-1.

Senegal’s first win in the group came against hosts Qatar, while Ecuador had started the proceedings in the 29-day tournament with a 2-0 win over the hosts, and then drew with the Netherlands and lost their last match, to finish third with four points

Hosts Qatar finished at the bottom of the table losing all their matches and conceding seven goals and scoring one goal, the worst record for the World Cup hosts. The hosts’ only goal of the tournament came in a 3-1 loss to Ecuador.

The hosts, who never featured in any of the editions of the World Cup but were playing in the current championship on account of being hosts thus joined South Africa as the only hosts which did not make it beyond the first round.

Senegal and Netherlands now join Portugal, Brazil, and France in the last 16 stages.

Ecuador, which had played with freedom and creativity in their opening two matches to leave themselves needing only a draw to reach the last 16, paid the price for a passive display. The vibrancy of their earlier performances was nowhere to be seen under the pressure of protecting what they had. Ecuador flopped on the promise of the opening match with Enner Valencia unable to revive himself one last time.

Senegal spurred on by an almost non-stop drumming from their supporters and knowing they needed to win, was uninhibited by contrast.

Aliou Cisse’s side controlled the first half. Senegal found swathes of space in and around the Ecuador area early on as the South Americans began on a shaky note but Idrissa Gueye and Boulaye Dia both failed to finish off the opportunities that came their way and ended up shooting wide.

Senegal did not have to wait for long as the breakthrough goal came when Angelo Preciado and central defender Felix Torres misjudged the flight of a long ball out of the Senegal defense. Sarr read it perfectly.

The Watford winger muscled in ahead of Torres on the left and took one touch inside the area before being clattered by a clumsy challenge from center-half Piero Hincapie. French referee Clement Turpin immediately pointed to the spot and Sarr, who had missed his two previous penalties at club level, stroked a confident penalty inside the bottom left corner with Ecuador goalkeeper Galindez rooted to his line.

At the end of the first half, Ecuador’s Argentinian coach Gustavo Julio Alfaro brought in three changes taking out Carlos Gruezo and replacing him with Jose Cifuentes, Alan Franco making way for Jeremy Sarmiento and Michael Estrada going out, and Djorkaeff Reasco taking his place on the turf.

Thereafter, he brought in Jackson Porozo for Angelo Preciado as the South American side tried all combinations to break into the rival defense in pursuit of the equalizer.

On the other hand, Senegal coach Aliou Cisse also brought in a fresh pair of legs in the 74th minute to keep Ecuador at bay with Iliman Ndiaye making way for Cheikh Dieng and Pathe Ciss taking over from Nampalys Mendy.

The introduction of Cifuentes and Sarmiento sparked an immediate improvement for Ecuador and, for the first time in the game, Senegal was on the back foot for a sustained spell.

The equalizer came off a set-piece situation. Gonzalo Plata’s delivery was met by a header from Torres and fell to Caicedo, left completely unmarked at the back post and kept onside by Sabaly standing on the goal-line at the opposite post. The Brighton midfielder tucked away a simple finish and the Senegal drums fell silent. But they were beating again within two minutes.

Ecuador’s moment of triumph quickly turned to despair when Gana Gueye swung a free-kick into a crowded Ecuador penalty area. The ball struck Ecuador’s goalscorer on the thigh and looped up for Koulibaly to restore Senegal’s precious lead with a close-range volley beyond Galndez.

Senegal was able to hold on to their own amid a nervy six minutes of stoppage time to finish as runners-up in Group A, with Koulibaly’s first international goal sending the Africa Cup of Nations champions to the last 16 stages.

Referee Clement Turpin kept the proceedings under control by showing a yellow card to Idrissa Gana Gueye of Senegal in the 66th minute.
