Madhur Bhandarkar on receiving a positive response for his film at IFFI

Film director Madhur Bhandarkar was overwhelmed to see the response his movie ‘India Lockdown’ received after its screening at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

Madhur, who is known for making out-of-the-box films that reflect the reality of society, says after getting so much appreciation at the festival he is sure that the movie will be liked by the audience throughout the country.

He says: “This was ‘India Lockdown”s first public screening and the thunderous response from the festival goers have uplifted my spirit. The performances of all actors have been applauded and this has given me an assurance that ‘India Lockdown’ will be loved by people the world over as it is real, relatable, and raw.”

The 54-year-old director is known for his films such as ‘Page-3’, ‘Fashion’, ‘And corporate’ among others. Like his earlier movies, ‘India Lockdown’ is also a movie that brings the reality of that entire period and how the life of people changed after the sudden announcement of lockdown by the government.

The movie deals with the effects of the pandemic and lockdown. It highlights how many became jobless, the issue of migrant workers while going back to their native places, and sex workers deprived of their source of income. The director has attempted to bring the entire reality on-screen.

He adds: “Lockdown was a struggle for everyone, but certain stories had to be narrated and documented. The movie is a product of my observations and portrays those untold stories that showcase a different side to human emotions, from uncertainty and anxiety to loneliness and survival instincts.”

Starring Shweta Basu Prasad, Prateik Babbar, Aahana Kumra, Sai Tamhankar, and Prakash Belawadi in lead roles, the film will stream on ZEE5 from December 2.

Australia clears FTA with India

0

Australia on Tuesday cleared the free trade agreement (FTA) with India as its Parliament has approved the pact.

Taking to Twitter, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “BREAKING: Our Free Trade Agreement with India has passed through Parliament.”

The pact is likely to be implemented on a mutually agreeable date.

According to Australian law, the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA) needs ratification by that country’s parliament before its implementation.

The pact will enable duty-free access for Australian products in India in sectors like textiles, leather goods, jewelry, etc.

Union Commerce and Textiles Minister Piyush Goyal reacted to the development by tweeting: “Delighted that India-Australia Economic Cooperation & Trade Agreement has been passed by Australian Parliament. A result of our deep friendship, it sets the stage for us to unleash the full potential of our trade ties and spur massive economic growth.”

Australia on its part would offer zero-duty access to Indian products, which currently attract customs duty to the tune of 4 to 5 percent in that country.

Disha Patani’s order of eating carbs is Tiger’s sister Krishna Shroff’s command

Actress Disha Patani is known for setting social media on fire with her sensuous pictures. Keeping up with the practice, the actress again shared a picture on her social media on Tuesday in which she is wearing black lingerie and a bathrobe. But, what caught the attention of the netizens is Tiger Shroff’s sister Krishna Shroff’s comment on Disha’s picture.

Disha shared the mirror selfie in which she can be seen standing close to a jacuzzi and holding a piece of fully loaded dessert. Stressing the importance of carbohydrates in a balanced diet, the actress wrote in the caption, “Eat your carbs”.

Krishna took to the comments section and wrote, “Yes Ma’am”, and the netizens are having a field day. One user wrote, “Ye pakka Tiger Bhai hain, Krishna ki ID se (This surely is Tiger Shroff operating Krishna’s ID to comment on the picture)”

Another one wrote insisting Krishna address Disha as her sister-in-law, “bhabhi boliye”.

For the uninitiated, Tiger and Disha were rumored to be dating however, none of them made it official or spoke about their equation on a public platform. In August this year, it was also speculated that the two called it quits over Tiger’s obsession with his career and fitness.

Ira Sone: The web can be tricky and overwhelming, especially when you do a bold scene

Actress Ira Sone, who began her acting career in 2007 with the popular show ‘Kumkum: Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan’, shares her experience of doing web shows and why she is not so keen to do bold scenes.

She says: “The experience was underwhelming because there is a thin line between bold scenes and the content is absolutely bold; this thin line makes a huge difference, and in my case, the bold scene backfired because it took over the story and the content.”

“The content was really good, but the character got overshadowed because of the number of scenes that were in the show. The web can be tricky and overwhelming, especially when you do a bold scene.”

The actress, who has been part of ‘Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki’, ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat’, ‘Saat Phere: Saloni Ka Safar’, ‘Saath Nibhaana Saathiya’, and many more says that many of the TV actors are doing OTT projects but her experience is not that great.

As she says: “I believe the web is the bridge between TV and movies, and I see a lot of TV actors doing some quality work; however, I have had a very underwhelming experience.”

She adds: “Television has a different audience that certainly can’t accept their bahus playing anything beyond a bahu. The format of TV and web scripts is very different, and I’m hopeful that in time we can see things changing.”

‘Bigg Boss 16’: Housemates aim at contestants on hitlist for eviction task

In the upcoming episode of ‘Bigg Boss 16’, a unique nomination task titled Crime Scene will be announced, which is conducted in four rounds.

For each round, ‘Bigg Boss’ appoints a killer who will have to kill one out of two housemates, who belong to rooms three, four, and six by shooting them with a rifle. Each of the two potential victims will have to make a convincing pitch on why they must survive (in the task and the house) and the other deserves to be shot (nominated).

The two housemates can offer rishvat’ to the killer and it is up to the killer to decide if it’s valuable enough to spare the housemate. Once the killer arrives at a decision, he/she must state their reason for shooting (nominating) them.

Along with the fear of nomination, the drama and fights remain constant.

The fight in this episode is cleverly engineered by Archana Gautam who pits Tina Datta and Sumbul Touqeer against each other knowing well that the equation of the duo has soured. Provoking Tina, Archana complains that her bedroom (Room of four) is messy, and no one works as much as Sumbul in the house.

She instigates Tina by alleging that she keeps chanting hygienic hygienic’ but being hygienic doesn’t mean looking good or wearing fancy clothes. Tina succumbs to the instigation and defends herself by claiming that she cleans the room and warns Archana to avoid getting arrogant with her.

Tina is enraged that Archana thinks that Sumbul does chores, and she doesn’t. Her other contention is that Sumbul doesn’t stand up for her while allegations of untidiness are being leveled against her. Shalin Bhanot, who has a soft corner for Tina, reasons with Sumbul over her not speaking in Tina’s favor when hygiene is being discussed.

This doesn’t go down well with Sumbul who thinks that Shalin should have no say in standing up for people by reminding him of his earlier betrayals. While Shalin, Tina, and Sumbul are bickering, Archana jumps with joy at having accomplished her mission to create chaos.

Amid all the drama, Sajid Khan and Abdu Rozik’s Long Son Short Son Show’ brings a dose of comic relief. Sajid and Abdu hosted guest Shiv Thakare, who asked a series of fun questions. Will you marry Archana Gautam to retain captaincy? Who will you save between Ankit Gupta and Priyanka Chahar Choudhary if their plane is about to crash? Who’s a bigger fighter between Abdu and Hazbulla? Who will you shoot between Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia and Abdu Rozik?

PKL 9: Very happy to score 1500 raid points, hoping to get more in this season, says U.P. Yoddhas’ Pardeep Narwal

0

Pardeep Narwal broke another record in the vivo Pro Kabaddi League when he became the first player to score 1500 raid points in the history of the tournament during U.P. Yoddhas’ match against Gujarat Giants in Hyderabad on Monday.

Speaking about achieving the remarkable record, Narwal said, “I knew that I was just 5 points away from achieving the 1500 raid points mark and I was definitely going to score those 5 points in the game against Gujarat. I am really happy to achieve this feat and I’ll definitely try to achieve my target of 1600 raid points this season.”

Narwal, who scored 9 raid points in the match, helped his team win a thriller against the Giants.

Speaking about their 35-31 victory, the U.P. Yoddhas Head Coach Jasveer Singh said, “This was an important match for us and we were under pressure going into the match. We had a ten-point lead at the end of the first half and the Gujarat team was under pressure at that time. Our defense unit should have played with a bit of patience when we had the lead, but they made a few mistakes, which helped Gujarat come back into the game. However, winning a crunch game is a positive sign for us.”

Matches on Wednesday:

The match between Jaipur Pink Panthers and Puneri Paltan will be a cracker of a contest as both sides have been in tremendous form. While the Panthers will bank on raider Arjun Deshwal, the Pune side will hope for raider Mohit Goyat to take them over the line.

The Bengaluru Bulls will be hoping to get back into winning ways when they take on the Bengal Warriors, however, raiders Maninder Singh and Shrikant Jadhav will pose a tough challenge to the Bengaluru side.

3rd T20I: New Zealand win toss, opt to bat against India

0

New Zealand captain Tim Southee won the toss and opted to bat first against India in the third and final T20I which was delayed due to rain at McClean Park, here on Tuesday.

New Zealand made one change in the playing XI as Mark Chapman came in place of regular captain Kane Williamson, who is missing this game due to a pre-arranged medical appointment.

“We will bat. Looks like a pitch where we can put the runs on the board. We can’t really control the weather, but the history of this ground suggests good batting conditions. Our bowling the other night wasn’t the best, but credit to SKY. Mark Chapman comes in straight away. You look back at places where we can improve as a team,” said Southee at the toss.

On the other hand, the Hardik Pandya-led India, who are leading the three-match series 1-0, made one change as Harshal Patel came in place of Washington Sundar.

“We wanted to bowl first anyway, so we got what we wanted. I think the pitch will remain the same for the entire 40 overs, but with the grass on it, there could be some lateral movement for our pacers. We do keep the dimensions in mind, but we do have the skill set in our bowling line-up. We can’t think too much about the conditions – One change, Harshal comes in place of Washington Sundar,” said Hardik.

Playing XIs:

New Zealand:

Finn Allen, Devon Conway(w), Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Adam Milne, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee(c), Lockie Ferguson.

India:

Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya(c), Deepak Hooda, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal.

Meta rolls out new privacy updates for teens on Instagram, Facebook

0

Meta has rolled out new privacy updates for teenagers on Instagram and Facebook, to protect them from online harm.

Starting now, anyone who joins Facebook under the age of 16, or under the age of 18 in some countries, will automatically be placed in more private settings, the company said in a blog post.

The company is also testing methods to prevent teenagers from messaging suspicious adults they are not connected to, and the platform won’t display them in the People You May Know recommendations.

It also created a number of tools for teens to inform the company if something makes them feel uncomfortable while using the applications.

Meta is also developing tools to prevent the online spread of self-generated intimate photographs.”We’re working with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to build a global platform for teens who are worried intimate images they created might be shared on public online platforms without their consent,” the company said.

Additionally, Meta is working with Thorn and their NoFiltr brand to create educational materials which will help teenagers reduce the shame and stigma surrounding intimate images.

Wales draw with US after 64-year World Cup hiatus

0

An eventful second day of the World Cup in Qatar wrapped up with the match between US and Wales ending in a 1-1 draw at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, some 20 km from Doha.

While the Americans piled up pressure on the Welsh through the match giving scant ball possession as Timothy Weah scored in the 36th minute, Wales tried to make a comeback into the game in the second half.

Six yellow cards were shown by match referee Abdulrahman Al-Jassim in a match that saw several fouls and exchanges among players.

The star player of Wales, Gareth Bale, struck with a penalty in the 82nd minute to score the equalizer.

Wales have made it to the World Cup after a gap of 64 years. And it showed in the eyes of Welsh fans in the stands after Bale’s successful shot.

Earlier in the day, the Iranian team was under the spotlight as players remained silent as their national anthem was being played ahead of the match against England at the Khalifa International stadium in Doha.

There were also reports in the international media questioning the Iranian team’s decision not to evacuate their goalkeeper from the field after he suffered a bloody collision with his teammate. Alireza Beiranvand was substituted subsequently after suffering an injury in the eighth minute of the match. He was carried away from the field on a stretcher after unsuccessfully trying to play on after colliding with Hosseini Majid.

Iran lost to England 2-6. In a post-match press conference, Iran’s head coach Carlos Queiroz said his side deserved to lose as the players were no match for the pace of the English team members, Qatar news agency reported.

Can there be 2 Indian-origin women running for US Prez? Haley hints she may contest

0

Can there be two women of Indian origin vying for the US presidential nominations from two opposing parties?

That’s in the realm of possibility, distant as it may seem, with Nikki Haley, the daughter of a turban-wearing Sikh immigrant from India, dropping a hint that she may seek the Republican nomination, but it also depends on the 80-year-old President Joe Biden decided not to seek a second term opening a path for Vice President Kamala Harris to run for the Democratic Party nomination.

So far Biden has said that he is in for another term and will make a final decision with his family early next year.

The first person of Indian-American descent to serve on the US cabinet, Haley said on Sunday that she will look at a run for the presidency “in a serious way” and “will have more say soon”.

With a touch of bravado, she added: “For now, I’ll say this. I’ve won tough primaries and tough general elections. I’ve been the underdog every single time. When people underestimate me, it’s always fun. But I’ve never lost an election and I’m not going to start now. I’m ready for the road ahead.”

She spoke at a meeting of the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) in Las Vegas, Nevada, which was the first major Republican political gathering after former President Donald Trump had announced his run for the presidency.

Trump also addressed the meeting as did others who may run against him like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

After resigning from the cabinet position as Permanent Representative to the UN with only two years on the job, Haley set about building her base in the party.

She set up a political action committee, Stand for America, which endorsed 60 candidates in the November 8 midterm elections and spent $10 million promoting them.

Haley who spoke proudly of her rise from “a brown girl growing up in a small rural southern town”, with a stark racial divide and her family’s immigration from India, took a dig at Harris, whose primary identification in politics is African-American from her father’s roots and has often focused on racism.

She accused Harris of being with those who promoted “self-loathing” among Americans and citing her own family’s experience said: “They have the gall to tell us, America is racist.”

Before joining Trump’s cabinet, Haley had been the Governor of South Carolina, the second person of Indian origin to assume the post after fellow-Republican Bobby Jindal.

“A lot of people have asked if I’m going to run for President. Now that the midterms are over, I’ll look at it in a serious way. And I’ll have more to say soon,” she said.

“If my family and I decide to continue our life of service, we will put 1,000 percent into it and we’ll finish it.”

She dropped a subtle hint while criticizing Biden’s effort to resurrect the Iran nuclear deal that was broken by Trump.

“The next President will shred it on her first day in office,” she said with an emphasis on “her” as the audience cheered.

Harris sought the Democratic Party nomination for the 2020 election before dropping out in the initial stages of the campaign and ultimately was selected by Biden for vice president.

Her fortunes are tied to Biden in many ways, starting with whether he will run again.

A CNN poll showed that 67 percent of all voters surveyed did not want him to run again, although 83 percent of Democrats were for a second term.

The oldest president 80, Biden who has sometimes stumbled while speaking in public, referring to Harris as President or mixing up Fallujah in Iraq with Kherson in Ukraine, faces questions about his capacity to handle another term.

Giving voice to doubters in his party, Democratic Representative Dean Phillips said: “I think the country would be well served by a new generation of compelling, well-prepared, dynamic Democrats to step up.”

Should Biden decide not to run, the focus will be on Harris. Her performance as Vice President has been mediocre, notably having failed to stem illegal immigration, a task entrusted to her by Biden.

But her stock has risen with Biden’s within the party after the Democrats’ surprisingly strong showing in the midterm elections which was seen as a referendum on him and Trump.

While being Vice President gives her an edge should Biden decide not to run, she will still face strong challenges for the party nomination. Haley will have an even more daunting task ahead if she decides to take on the race.

RealClear Politics aggregation of polls about the Republican nomination for the 2024 election showed that Haley had only a 2 percent backing, compared to 47.3 percent for Trump and 29 percent for DeSantis.

Haley is only 50 years old and even if she doesn’t make it in 2024, the run would have raised her profile for several opportunities ahead. She may even have a shot at the Vice Presidential nomination.

While indirectly criticizing Trump at the RJC meeting for the party’s expected red wave turning into a trickle, she also tried to make amends saying, “I disagree that our losses were due to one person”.

She has had a tenuous relationship with Trump. She first endorsed his rival Florida Senator Marco Rubio for the party nomination but got behind Trump when he became the candidate and he picked her for the cabinet.

Her criticism of Trump has, on the other hand, made her a viable choice for Republicans opposed to the former President.

In what could be seen as a dig against Trump many of whose handpicked candidates gave the party a costly defeat, she said on Sunday: “We have to choose candidates that can win not just a primary but also a general election. We don’t need more politicians who love to go on TV and talk about our problems.”

After January 6, 2021, physical attack on Congress by Trump’s rioting supporters, she told a party meeting the next day: “He was badly wrong with his words yesterday. And it wasn’t just his words. His actions since Election Day will be judged harshly by history.”

In her Sunday speech, Haley repeatedly emphasized status as a racial minority in a party associated with whiteness and said it should reach out to minorities – Hispanics, Asians, African Americans, and Jews.

Her parents came to the US “from India with $8 in their pocket” and successfully — and proudly — navigated the American South, she said.

Her father Ajit Singh Randhawa became a professor, while her mother Raj Kaur Randhawa became a businesswoman.

UP woman seeks PM’s help in getting daughter back from London-based husband

0

A woman from Muzaffarnagar has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his intervention in extraditing her husband, who allegedly took their daughter away to London and pronounced triple talaq.

The accused husband, a resident of London, was booked in 2017 on charges of demanding dowry and domestic violence in Muzaffarnagar.

“Farhana married Parvez Gulmark in 2014. A year later, Gulmark took her to London. After a few days, he started harassing her. The couple had a baby girl, but the harassment continued. Eventually, she got fed up and filed a complaint with a domestic abuse agency in London, following which, he made a compromise deal with Farhana. Later, on the pretext of meeting Farhana’s family, Gulmark brought her to India, and one day, he quietly took her daughter and her passport and left for the UK,” the woman’s family member, Shahzad Siddiqui, said.

“I want my daughter back. I want the Prime Minister to help in this matter,” Farhana said.

On Monday, Farhana approached the senior superintendent of police (SSP) office and filed a fresh complaint against her husband for allegedly pronouncing triple talaq.

She alleged, “On Sunday, my husband called on my brother’s phone number and pronounced triple talaq. He also threatened me, saying that if I dared to call him, his relatives in India would murder me.”

Twitter is done with layoffs, ready to hire again: Musk

0

After firing about two-thirds of the micro-blogging platform’s 7,500 employees in only three weeks after his take over, Twitter CEO Elon Musk said that the company is done with layoffs and is hiring again.

At a meeting with employees, Musk also claimed that Twitter is now actively hiring for positions in engineering and sales, reports The Verge. He also asked the staffers to recommend potential candidates.

The micro-blogging platform does not currently have any open positions advertised on its website, and Musk did not name the specific engineering or sales posts for which the company was seeking.

“In terms of critical hires, I would say people who are great at writing software are the highest priority,” the report quoted Musk as saying.

According to the CEO, there are “no plans” to have the company’s headquarters in Texas, as he did with Tesla, although it would make sense to have “dual-headquartered” offices in Texas and California.

“If we want to move the headquarters to Texas I think it would play into the idea that Twitter has gone from being left-wing to right-wing, which is not the case,” Musk told employees.

“This is not a right-wing takeover of Twitter. It is a moderate-wing takeover of Twitter,” he added.

PKL 9: Pardeep Narwal gets his 1500th raid point as U.P. Yoddhas eke out narrow win

0

An all-round performance gave the U.P. Yoddhas a brilliant 35-31 win over the Gujarat Giants in the second game of the evening at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium here on Monday.

Pardeep Narwal got his 1500th point in the league on a day when he finished with 9 points to help the Yoddhas to victory.

A slow start saw the UP Yoddhas take five consecutive points before the Giants had even opened their account. It took the Giants seven points to register their first point of the game and when they did, the Yoddhas, led by Pardeep Narwal hit them with a series of touchpoints to leave them on the verge of an all-out.

Narwal cleaned up the remaining two Giants defenders to inflict the first ALL OUT of the game and helped the UP side take a 13-2 lead. That raid also saw him extend his all-time numbers, as he registered his 1500th point in the league.

Despite a brief Giants fightback, the Yoddhas stayed in complete control, their raiders perfectly complemented by a smart defense. The UP team went into the break leading 20-10.
Stung by their first-half capitulation, the Giants sprinted out of the gates in the second half and had, within the first five minutes, cut the lead by half. They inflicted an ALL OUT of their own to reduce the lead to one point. Thereafter, both teams started trading blows on almost every raid.

The Giants kept the pressure on the Yoddhas and ensured that they never got too safe. In the last two minutes, the difference between the two teams never extended two points, and with the last raid, the Giants needed success to get something from the game. However, a SUPER TACKLE by the Yoddhas on Dhaiya closed the doors on Giants’ hopes in the end.
