Red card against Portugal is my worst World Cup memory, says Rooney

0

Former England forward Wayne Rooney has not forgotten his infamous red card during the World Cup quarterfinal against Portugal in 2006, describing the incident as his “worst World Cup memory”.

During the show on Sports18 and JioCinema, on being asked about a memory that he would like to forget from the World Cup, Rooney said, “I think for me it was in 2006, the red card against Portugal. I remember I was sitting in the dressing room after getting a red card. And I think if we lose in penalties, it is my fault, and if we go through to the semifinal and final, I miss both games. It was definitely the worst feeling as a player, so definitely the red card in 2006.”

After Rooney stamped on Portugal’s Ricardo Carvalho in the quarterfinal in Germany, Ronaldo led the protests and was shoved by Rooney before the referee waved the red card in the 62nd minute.

Portugal forward then appeared to wink at his country’s coaches and substitutes on the bench. The English legend said that he too tried getting Ronaldo booked for diving during the match.

Rooney also spoke about Ronaldo’s famous wink from that match and said, “In football, we were teammates at Manchester United, and in Portugal, he was a rival. I actually tried getting him booked for diving as well. So, I have no issues.”

Qatar World Cup: My problems with Man United will not affect Portugal’s campaign, says Cristiano Ronaldo

0

After causing a huge controversy by giving an explosive interview criticizing his club and manager, Cristiano Ronaldo made a surprise appearance in front of the media on Monday to insist he is not a problem for the Portuguese squad as they prepare to kick off their World Cup campaign against Ghana on Thursday.

Ronaldo has been in the headlines for the wrong reasons in the past couple of weeks after a TV interview in which he accused Manchester United of betraying him and trying to force him out of the club, while also saying he had “no respect” for coach Erik ten Hag.

The shockwaves around those declarations, which have led United to consider taking legal action against him, have still not died down, but speaking in a press conference at the Portuguese training camp in Qatar, the striker insisted defiantly they were not a problem for the national team, reports Xinhua.

“In my life, the best timing is always my timing. I don’t have to think about what other people think. I speak when I want. The players know me really well for many years and know the type of person I am,” he said.

Ronaldo insisted that Portugal had an “ambitious group” of players, who were “hungry and focused.”

“I’m sure the interview won’t shake the changing room’s concentration and focus. I’m feeling great, I’m recovered and I’m training well and ready to start the World Cup in the best way possible,” added the striker, who also brushed aside any talk of a bad relationship with Manchester United teammate Bruno Fernandes.

“I was playing around. His plane was late — I asked him: ‘Did you come by boat?” he explained.

“I feel that this Portugal squad has amazing potential. I think we can win for sure, but we need to focus on the next game. So, it’s focusing in Ghana, get a win and go from there,” concluded Ronaldo.

PKL 9: Tamil Thalaivas register comfortable win over Bengal Warriors

0

With the help of Narender’s heroics, Tamil Thalaivas attained a comfortable win over Bengal Warriors in the vivo Pro Kabaddi League Season 9 at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium here on Monday.

Tamil Thalaivas took a big lead at the end of the first half and maintained it despite Bengal Warriors putting up a strong fight in the second half and eventually emerged victorious with 35-30 in the end.

Narender picked up a few raids as the Tamil Thalaivas took the lead at 5-3 in the 4th minute. However, the Warriors tackled Narender soon after and stayed in the game at 5-7.

Ajinkya Pawar stepped up his game and reduced the Warriors to just three members on the mat. Deepak Hooda found it difficult to break the Thalaivas’ defense as the side from Tamil Nadu took a massive lead at 10-5 in the 11th minute.

But, Balaji D and Manoj Gowda carried out a SUPER TACKLE to avoid an all-out and reduced the gap between the two sides. Moments later, Gowda effected a fantastic raid as the Warriors reached within touching distance of Thalaivas’ score at 10-11.

However, the team from Tamil Nadu attained momentum again and inflicted an ALL OUT to take the lead at 17-11 in the 18th minute. The Thalaivas kept raging on and led at 21-13 at the end of the first half.

The Thalaivas’ defense unit led by Captain Sagar tackled Maninder Singh in the opening minutes of the second half as the Tamil side continued to have a stronghold of the match at 22-15. Thereafter, Maninder carried out a couple of brilliant raids, but the Thalaivas still held the lead at 24-20 in the 29th minute.

Narender and Ajinkya Pawar helped the Tamil side extend its lead after picking up successive raids, but moments later, Maninder pulled off a SUPER RAID to keep the Warriors in the game at 25-27.

However, Narender brought the momentum towards the Thalaivas’ side, soon after, with a magnificent two-point raid. The star raider kept picking up points as the side from Tamil Nadu continued to hold the lead at 31-29 in the 38th minute.

The Warriors threatened to level the score in the last two minutes, but the Thalaivas carried out a SUPER TACKLE in the last minute of the match and sealed the deal in the end.

Google introduces new AR features to shop for beauty products, shoes

0

Google has introduced new ways to shop in AR (Augmented Reality) on Google, including a photo library for users to find their foundation shade and a way to see sneakers in their space.

Foundation is the most-searched category within makeup. It’s also one of the most personal products you can buy — a slight change in color or tone can make a huge difference, Google said in a blog post.

With assistance from beauty brands, Google’s new photo library features 148 models representing a range of skin tones, ages, genders, face shapes, ethnicities, and skin types.

To use this feature users will need to search for a foundation shade on Google across a range of prices and brands, like “Clinique Even Better Foundation”, according to the blog post.

Users will then see what that foundation looks like on models with a similar skin tone, including before and after shots, to help them decide which one works best for them.

Moreover, the new feature also allows users to try out products in 3D and AR.

Users can spin, zoom and see the shoes in their space as they decide if the color, laces, tread or sole fit their style.

Users will need to search for a sneaker type, like “Shop blue VANS sneakers,” and tap “View in my space”, the blog post added.

Not surprised that very experienced Hazlewood did a great job as captain: Sean Abbott

0

Australia’s fast-bowling all-rounder Sean Abbott said he wasn’t surprised over a very experienced Josh Hazlewood doing a great job as a skipper in his ODI captaincy debut when the hosts defeated England by 72 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

Hazlewood became Australia’s 28th ODI captain after newly-appointed full-time skipper Pat Cummins was rested for the second game of the three-match series against England. Hazlewood also became just the fourth bowler to captain Australia in ODIs.

With James Vince and Sam Billings leading England’s chase with a 122-run stand, Hazlewood brought himself back in the attack and trapped the former lbw in the 28th over, triggering a batting collapse of the visitors and bowling them out for 208.

“Once I knew I wasn’t playing, I was trying to wind him up. He tried to play it down… he was very nervous. He had a very good day and I think he took it all in his stride very well.”

“Josh has got a great cricket brain, he’s very experienced so I’m not surprised that he did such a good job as captain,” Abbott said on SEN Radio’s 1170 Breakfast show.

Abbott, who has played alongside Hazlewood on several occasions in domestic cricket for New South Wales, revealed that Australia is taking a collaborative approach to leadership in ODI cricket to get the desired results on-field.

“You’ll have guys like Smith or Alex Carey behind the stumps with the gloves on that get a certain feeling about a field placement. We’re in a good space at the moment where people can make those changes and not need the captain to say it’s ok.”

“We had the new ODI captain Pat Cummins running drinks for me the other night and running messages. It’s a team effort.”

With an unassailable 2-0 lead, Australia will be aiming for a series sweep when they take the field for the third and final ODI against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Tuesday.

Cricket Australia’s amendment gives David Warner hope of leadership role ban being revoked

0

Cricket Australia (CA) has amended its ‘code of conduct for players and player support personnel, which will now allow them to apply to have long-term sanctions modified.

The amendment could benefit batting stalwart and former Australia vice-captain David Warner, who is serving a lifetime leadership role ban due to his reported involvement in the ball-tampering episode during the Test against South Africa at Cape Town in 2018.

While the playing ban on the stalwart was lifted after one year and he has made a strong comeback since, being part of several successful campaigns including the 2021 T20 World Cup victory in the UAE, the leadership ban continues to be in place.

Warner could take the opportunity presented by the amendment and get his leadership ban revoked, which could help him lead the national side or his Big Bash League (BBL) team in future.

A Cricket Australia (CA) statement said on Monday that, “CA has amended its Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel after a review by the CA Head of Integrity. The CA Board requested a Code of Conduct review at its October board meeting. The recommendations from this review have been accepted and given formal approval.

“Under the changes, players and support staff can now apply to have long-term sanctions modified. Any applications will be considered by a three-person Review Panel, comprising independent Code of Conduct Commissioners, which must be satisfied that exceptional circumstances exist to justify modifying a sanction.

“These circumstances and considerations will include whether the subject of the sanction has demonstrated genuine remorse; the subject’s conduct and behavior since the imposition of the sanction; whether rehabilitation programs have been completed undertaken (if applicable) and the length of time that has passed since the sanction was imposed and whether sufficient time has passed to allow for reform or rehabilitation,” said CA in its statement.

The code of conduct states this process: “Acknowledges that Players and Player Support Personnel are capable of genuine reform or rehabilitation and is intended to provide the Player or Player Support Personnel with an opportunity to resume their previously held positions or responsibilities in specific circumstances.”

“CA’s Code of Conduct is an important part of our continuing efforts to maintain the integrity of cricket and provides for an independent and fair disciplinary procedure to deal with improper conduct. CA regularly reviews its Integrity Codes and Policies to ensure that they align with community standards and expectations,” the statement added.

Bob Iger returns as Walt Disney CEO, Bob Chapek steps down

0

The Walt Disney Company has announced that Robert A. Iger (Bob Iger) is returning to head the company, as Bob Chapek has stepped down as CEO amid the company’s plans to reduce the workforce to navigate the rough global conditions.

Iger, who left the company last year, after spending more than four decades at the company, including 15 years as its CEO, has agreed to serve as Disney’s CEO for two years.

He will work closely with the Board in developing a successor to lead the company at the completion of his term, Disney said in a statement late on Sunday.

“We thank Chapek for his service to Disney over his long career, including navigating the company through the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic,” said Susan Arnold, Chairman of the Board.

“The Board has concluded that as Disney embarks on an increasingly complex period of industry transformation, Bob Iger is uniquely situated to lead the company through this pivotal period,” she added.

The change at the top comes as facing slow revenue growth, Disney has reportedly planned to reduce its workforce and freeze hiring.

According to an internal leaked memo from Chapek, the company is “limiting headcount additions through a targeted hiring freeze”.

The outgoing CEO also advised executives to only take necessary business travels. Virtual meetings should be conducted as often as possible.

“I am extremely optimistic for the future of this great company and thrilled to be asked by the Board to return as its CEO,” Iger said.

During his 15 years as CEO, from 2005 to 2020, Iger helped build Disney into one of the world’s most successful and admired media and entertainment companies with a strategic vision focused on creative excellence, technological innovation, and international growth.

Meanwhile, global revenues for The Walt Disney Company decreased 18 percent to $1.1 billion and operating income dropped 18 percent to $0.1 billion, owing to a decrease in advertising revenue due to lower average viewership, especially in India where there was no cricket in the September quarter.

Ecuador can get better, says manager Alfaro

0

Ecuador manager Gustavo Alfaro said he was happy but not “totally satisfied” with his team’s 2-0 victory over hosts Qatar in their opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Sunday.

“The most important thing today was to win. I’m not totally satisfied because we know a lot of things we can improve, but we are all learning, including me,” the Argentine coach told a post-match press conference at the Al Bayt Stadium.

“It’s a great victory. All games in the World Cup are difficult but the opening match against the tournament hosts involves more tension. We didn’t know what our level would be because there was little time to prepare. We only had four days to get ready for this game. Added to that was the fact it was the opening match of the World Cup, and this is a young team,” he was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Alfaro said his players needed to raise their game to another level in their remaining group-stage matches against Senegal and the Netherlands.

“Today we took an important step but it’s not decisive. There are teams that have won their first match of the World Cup and have not advanced (to the knockout stage). But having said all of that, this victory is important and it will give us confidence.

“We were good in this match but we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves. We are in a period of construction. We know that what we achieved in the (South America zone) qualifiers isn’t enough. Here we are up against the best teams in the world. The times are short between each game.”

Playing in their fourth World Cup, Ecuador’s best-ever finish in the tournament was a round of 16 appearances against England in 2006, which they lost after a trademark David Beckham free-kick.

“We have big hopes but it’s hard to say how much we can advance in the tournament. It will depend on how much we are able to improve and incorporate aspects to our game that we need to get better,” Alfaro added.

Meanwhile, Qatar manager Felix Sanchez admitted his team suffered from an attack of nerves during their 2-0 defeat to Ecuador.

Fenerbahce forward Enner Valencia scored two first-half goals as World Cup debutants Qatar became the first host team to lose the opening match of football’s showpiece tournament.

“Nerves got the better of us,” Sanchez told a post-match press conference. “We competed well but it’s a World Cup and we were playing in it for the first time. In front of our fans we weren’t able to be at the level we would have liked after a bad start.”

Sanchez vowed he and his backroom staff would analyze what went wrong and make any necessary changes ahead of their next match against Senegal on Friday.

“It wasn’t the game we’d hoped for,” he said. “We have to analyze the match and try to prepare for the next one, which will be as tough or even tougher than this one. We will look at how we can be more effective with the players we have available.”

“We have to congratulate our opponents. They were deserving winners. We can improve a lot and we know we haven’t shown our maximum level. Nerves got the better of us early. We started badly and that hurt us. We must handle the pressure better and be more competitive in our next matches.”

The Spaniard, who has been Qatar’s manager since 2017, added: “We lacked precision at crucial moments and we weren’t able to string more than four passes together.

“We were also poor in transitions. When you play at this level if you make a mistake you get punished. We will try to be stronger and more compact in our next match. We know that we have to move the ball faster and pass the ball better to be effective against teams in this competition.”

PKL 9: Arjun Deshwal’s superlative performance helps Jaipur Pink Panthers register big win

0

Arjun Deshwal emerged as the best player with 19 points as Jaipur Pink Panthers put up a clinical performance to defeat U.P. Yoddhas 42-29 in the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season 9 at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium on Saturday.

Arjun Deshwal and Rahul Chaudhari picked up raid points as the Jaipur Pink Panthers took the lead at 4-0 in the 4th minute. The Panthers tackled Rohit Tomar, soon after, and reduced the Yoddhas to just two members on the mat.

Moments later, the Panthers tackled Surender Gill and inflicted an All-Out to take a massive lead at 10-3. Jaipur’s defense unit led by Ankush continued to shine as the Pink Panthers attained a stronghold of the match at 13-3 in the 10th minute.

Pardeep Narwal effected a couple of fantastic raids, but Deshwal continued to pick up raid points from the other side to help Jaipur stay in the lead at 14-7.

Tomar tried to pull the momentum toward the Yoddhas, but Reza Mirbagheri stood tall for the Panthers as they extended their lead to 18-8 in the 17th minute. Tomar found it difficult to breach his opponent’s defense, which allowed the Jaipur side to lead 22-10 at the end of the first half.

The Pink Panthers rode on the momentum and inflicted an All-Out in the opening minutes of the second half. The Jaipur defense proved to be too strong for the Yoddhas as they failed to effect raids consistently.

Later on, Narwal pulled off a couple of magnificent raids, but the Yoddhas were too far behind the Pink Panthers at 16-32 in the 30th minute. However, Narwal continued to pick up raid points and reduced the Jaipur side to just two members on the mat.

Moments later, the Yoddhas tackled Deshwal and carried out an All-Out, but the Jaipur side still had a comfortable lead at 34-21.

The Yoddhas tried to reduce the deficit through raider James Kamweti in the last few minutes of the match, but it was too big a mountain to climb as the Panthers eventually closed out a comprehensive victory.

Afghanistan announce squad for Sri Lanka ODIs; include Naib, Noor

0

Afghanistan on Saturday announced their 18-member squad for three ICC Cricket World Cup Super League ODIs against Sri Lanka, which will be played from November 25th to 30 in Kandy.

All-rounder Gulbadin Naib and the left-arm wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad have been added to the squad, who were not part of Afghanistan’s last ODI series, against Zimbabwe in early June when they blanked the hosts 3-0.

The 18-year-old Noor hasn’t yet made his ODI debut but has already built up quite a reputation in various T20 leagues around the world. He returned figures of 4 for 10 on his T20I debut — joint-best debut figures in a T20I involving two Full-Member teams — and was more recently part of Afghanistan’s 2022 Asia Cup squad.

The youngster did not make the cut for the T20 World Cup in Australia but has been with the squad on a regular basis, despite not always getting the game time.

As expected Hashmatullah Shahidi is leading the team and he will form the fulcrum of the top order alongside Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Rahmat Shah.

Mohammad Nabi, who recently stepped down as the T20 captain after a disappointing World Cup campaign in Australia where Afghanistan failed to win a single game, has also been included. Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman are the prominent names in the bowling unit.

“The selectors have included some young faces for the series which is a good sign for us leading into the ICC Cricket World Cup next year. The series is vital for us in terms of our qualification for the mega event next year and I am sure the squad carries enough strength to do well when they get to the field,” Naseeb Khan, the ACB CEO, said.

Afghanistan squad:

Hashmatullah Shahidi (C), Rahmat Shah (VC), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK), Azmatullah Omarzai, Farid Malik, Fazal Haq Farooqi, Gulbadain Naib, Ibrahim Zadran, Ikram Alikhail (wicket-keeper), Mohammad Nabi, Mujib ur Rahman, Najibullah Zadran, Noor Ahmad, Rashid Khan, Riaz Hassan, Shahidullah Kamal, Yamin Ahmadzai and Zia ur Rahman Akbar.

Zomato plans to lay off 3% of its workforce

0

Online food delivery platform Zomato on Saturday said it is planning to lay off nearly 3 percent of its workforce on account of cost-cutting efforts and to turn profitable.

The decision comes after many tech giants and social media sites announced layoffs.

Zomato stated that layoffs will be based on regular performance.

“There has been a regular performance-based churn of under 3 percent of our workforce, there’s nothing more to it,” said a Zomato spokesperson.

The company currently has nearly 3,800 employees.

In May 2020, Zomato laid off about 520 of its employees, or 13 percent of its staff, in response to a slump in business following the Covid pandemic.

Meanwhile, Zomato’s co-founder Mohit Gupta quit the organization on Friday.

Moreover, the food delivery platform announced earlier this week that Rahul Ganjoo had ended his 5-year tenure as Head of New Initiatives.

Earlier in the month, Zomato’s Vice President for global growth Siddharth Jhawar announced his departure as well.

Google introduces conversation summaries in Spaces Chats

0

Google has introduced conversation summaries in Google Chat for messages in “Spaces”, which will summarise conversations for users in their Premium Workspace.

According to TechCrunch, in larger Workspaces, these Chats conversations can be difficult to keep up with unless users are always checking their Spaces for new conversations in Chats.

The Workspace Spaces Chat conversation summary will appear at the top of the Chats within Spaces, summarising any unread chatter in the Chats conversation.

By clicking on the summary of the Spaces Chats, users will jump straight to the conversation, even if it’s already visible and the conversation summary has only summarised a few lines of the Chats conversation, according to the report.

To turn the conversation summary on and off, users will need to go on Google Chat, then click Settings > Conversation summary and then tick or untick the box next to ‘show summaries in spaces that have many unread messages.

Also, last week, the tech giant announced that it will soon allow users to schedule recurring ‘Do Not Disturb (DND) features on its Chats platform.

Varun Dhawan, Abhishek Banerjee used to mimic Akshay Kumar’s comic timing

Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan and his ‘Bhediya’ co-actor Abhishek Banerjee recalled how they used to mimic Akshay Kumar during the shoot of their film and try to follow his comic timing for perfection in their performance.

Varun shared: “I remember, during the first schedule of Bhediya, we were shooting in Mira Road and it was my first scene with Abhishek. And, Kriti would come from Bachchhan Paandey’s shoot, and seeing her, we would start acting in Akshay Kumar Ji’s style in every scene. Kriti would actually start and later on, we would jump into it.”

Known for his action roles, Khiladi Kumar is also popular for his comic characters in movies such as ‘Bachchhan Paandey’, ‘Housefull’, ‘Welcome’, ‘And Khatta Meetha’ among others.

Abhishek added: “Akshay sir’s comedy timing is the best. Whenever we are confused about the approach to a scene, we would start talking or acting like him. When his energy gets into you, your performance gets better automatically.”

Varun also went on to praise the host of the show, Kapil Sharma for his contribution to comedy and for making the genre popular among the audience.”There was a stigma around comedy as a genre but Kapil has broken that stigma. In our country, people assume that the ones who are dumb do comedy whereas, in reality, people who do comedy are intelligent and wittiest of all,” said Varun, who is appearing on ‘The Kapil Sharma Show for the promotion of his upcoming film ‘Bhediya’ along with Kriti Sanon, Abhishek Banerjee, Deepak Dobriyal, and director Amar Kaushik.

‘The Kapil Sharma Show airs on Sony Entertainment Television.

PKL 9: Feels good to take revenge on Gujarat Giants, says Bengaluru Bulls coach Randhir Singh

0

Having lost to them in their previous encounter, Bengaluru Bulls head coach Randhir Singh said it felt good to take revenge on the Gujarat Giants in the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season 9 at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium here.

The Bengaluru Bulls came back strongly on Friday night to register a comprehensive 45-38 victory over Gujarat Giants.

Speaking about their fourth consecutive victory, Randhir Singh said, “It feels good to take revenge against Gujarat Giants because we lost our last game against them,” he said after the match.

Randhir was ecstatic with the performance of his raider Bharat, who had admirably filled in big shoes of star raider Pawan Sehrawat.

“Before the start of the season, everyone asked me ‘who would fill in Pawan Sehrawat’s shoes?’ I had mentioned raider, Bharat. I had said that he will score 190-200 points this season, otherwise, I’ll leave coaching. And he’s been doing very well,” the Bengaluru coach said.

The head coach also heaped praise on Neeraj Narwal, who has been making vital contributions to the Bengaluru side this season.

“Neeraj Narwal is a unique raider. No raider touches the opponent’s foot for a point apart from him. And he scores tackle points for us as well. So, he’s an all-rounder. He has scored 18 tackle points this season. He is a vital cog in the team.”

The Dabang Delhi K.C. are desperately looking for a victory, but they will face a strong challenge from Haryana Steelers’ raiders Manjeet and Meetu Sharma on Sunday.

The match between Bengaluru Bulls and Puneri Paltan will be an absolute treat for the fans as the top two sides in the points table will face off against each other. While the Bulls will bank on raider Bharat, the Pune Captain Fazel Atrachali will lead the charge for his team.
