Jamia masjid row: Bajrang Dal submits PIL to K’taka High Court, demands to vacate mosque

0

Jamia Mosque row in Karnataka has come to the forefront with Bajarang Dal submitting a PIL in the High Court demanding to vacate it. The PIL claimed that there is proof that the mosque was once a Hindu temple.

“There are traces of Hindu gods and temple structure in the Jamia Mosque of historical Srirangapatna town in Mandya district. Hence, the mosque should be vacated immediately, and also, Hindu devotees should be allowed to take bath in the Kalyani (traditional water body) located in the premises of the mosque,” the petition stated.

Bajrang Dal activists have further demanded to resurvey of the mosque on the lines of Gyanwapi masjid. The PIL was submitted on Wednesday by the state President of Bajrang Dal Manjunath. Including Manjunath, 108 devotees of Hanuman have petitioned.

The number 108 is considered auspicious in Hindu tradition and hence, 108 devotees have become parties, Bajrang Dal sources explain.

The Bajrang Dal activists have also given proof of the Mysore Gazetteer, Hindu architecture in the mosque, the inscription of Hindu idols, the sacred water body, and references of British officers to the court.

Earlier, Hindutva groups had sought a nod from authorities to conduct prayers in the mosque. The issue had become a hot topic in the state.

The mosque authorities have already made several appeals to concerned authorities to protect the Jamia mosque from Hindu activists.

Jamia masjid also called as Masjid-i-Ala, is located inside the Srirangapatna fort. It was built in 1786-87, during the rule of Tipu. The mosque has three inscriptions that mention nine names of Prophet Mohammad.

Narendra Modi Vichar Manch had made submissions to authorities for a survey of the mosque and maintained that they strongly believe with evidence that Jamia masjid was built after razing down the Hanuman temple.

Australia overturns Novak Djokovic visa ban ahead of Australian Open

0

The Australian government has overturned a ban on tennis star Novak Djokovic entering the country, clearing his way to compete in the Australian Open.

Andrew Giles, the Minister for Immigration, on Thursday confirmed that Djokovic has been granted a temporary visa to enter the country, Xinhua reports.

It comes about 10 months after the Serbian was detained in Melbourne on the eve of the Grand Slam for attempting to enter the country without being vaccinated against COVID-19.

Following a legal battle, Djokovic was deported and automatically banned from entering Australia for three years. Giles’ decision overturns that ban.

In a statement, he said strict border restrictions that banned unvaccinated non-citizens from entering the country have been lifted.

“Since the cancellation of Mr. Djokovic’s visa in January 2022, all COVID-19-related Australian border restrictions under the Biosecurity Act 2015 have been removed, including the requirement to provide evidence of COVID-19 vaccination status to enter Australia.”

Prior to being deported Djokovic was aiming for a fourth straight men’s singles title at Melbourne Park.

Speaking in Turin at the ATP Finals, Djokovic said he was “very happy” to be returning to Australia.

“I could not receive better news for sure – during this tournament as well. The Australian Open has been my most successful grand slam. I made some of the best memories there,” he said. The 2023 Australian Open will run from January 16-29.

Wearing masks not mandatory anymore in flights in India

0

Wearing the mask on airplanes in India to reduce coronavirus cases, the government has closed the rule of compulsory covering.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation said that the decision has been taken following a review meeting on the issue with the Ministry of Health.

“The matter, regarding the requirement for mandatory use of masks or face covers during air travel, has been reviewed in consultation with the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

“In line with the Government of India’s policy of graded approach of Covid-19 management response, the in-flight announcements henceforth may only mention that in view of the threat posed by Covid-19, all passengers should preferably use mask/face covers,” the Ministry said in an office memorandum.

The Ministry said that any reference of fine need not be announced with regard to the use of masks. “Any specific reference to fine/penal action need not be announced as part of the in-flight announcements. Hence, consolidated Covid-19 instructions for domestic and international air travel issued for passengers, airport operators, and airlines issued vide order dated May 10, 2022, stands modified to that extent,” it said.

In June this year, the airlines were asked to ensure that all passengers wear face masks properly and continue to wear the mask throughout the journey and masks could be removed under exceptional circumstances and for permitted reasons only.

Mamata questions ‘mysterious’ frequent deaths of migrant workers from Bengal

0

With five of 12 workers killed in the Mizoram stone quarry collapse hailing from West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday expressed her apprehensions over the frequent deaths of migrant workers from the state.

“Majority of the migrant workers killed in different accidents in the recent past were from West Bengal. Just compare the statistics from the last few months. Probably migrant workers from other states have also died elsewhere. But the number of deaths is maximum for those going from West Bengal. Take the examples of Mizoram, Kashmir, and Manipur. I do not know what is happening,” she told media persons here.

Of the five workers from West Bengal reportedly killed in the recent stone quarry collapse in Mizoram, four were from Nadia district and one from North 24 Parganas district.

The Chief Minister assured financial assistance to the families of the victims, as well as a state government job to one member from each of the five families.

However, her comments on the high rate of deaths of migrant workers from West Bengal elsewhere have already started creating ripples in political circles.

Recently, the principal opposition parties in the state like the BJP, the Left Front, and Congress have repeatedly attacked state government policies as the main reason for a large number of migrant workers from West Bengal going to other states to earn their livelihoods.

The opposition parties claimed that since the state government policies are not conducive to industrial development and employment generations, the workers and brains from the state are forced to move elsewhere to earn their livelihoods.

Political observers feel that probably the Chief Minister had felt that the same criticism might be hurled by the opposition again after the Mizoram tragedy and hence she has tried to seal those avenues by expressing her concern over the deaths of those from the state.

Twitter starts working on end-to-end encryption for direct messages

0

Twitter has started working on end-to-end encryption for direct messages (DMs) on Android.

App researcher Jane Manchun Wong tweeted: “Twitter is bringing back end-to-end encrypted DMs.”

A picture of the code strings highlighting references to encryption keys was attached to Wong’s post.

Elon Musk replied to Wong’s tweet with a winked emoji, which indicates that the feature is in development.

Several users expressed their thoughts on the post.

While one commented, “Nice. What happens in DMs should stay in DMs,” while another user commented, “This is very important and scary to think DMs were missing end-to-end encryption. Thanks, Elon!”

Meanwhile, Musk had announced that the micro-blogging platform would soon allow organizations to identify their associated accounts.

In a tweet, Musk said: “Rolling out soon, Twitter will enable organizations to identify which other Twitter accounts are actually associated with them.”

While a user commented “eventually we’ll be asking, what can’t Twitter do? Looking forward to exciting things”, another user asked: “Will any user be able to create an organization? Or will Twitter be the arbiter of what constitutes an organization?”

“Ultimately, I think there is no choice but for Twitter to be the final arbiter, but I’m open to suggestions,” Musk replied.

NASA’s Artemis 1 mission finally on way to the Moon

0

The US space agency on Wednesday finally sent its next-generation rocket into space as part of its ambitious, uncrewed Artemis I Moon mission which faced two failed attempts amid years of delays and billions of dollars spent.

The Space Launch System (SLS) rocket took off from Cape Canaveral in Florida and sent the Orion spacecraft on its way to Moon’s orbit.

The Orion will continue onward to the Moon, which it will orbit for several days before its likely return to the Earth on December 11.

“For the Artemis generation, this is for you,” said Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, Artemis launch director.

NASA tweeted: “We are going. For the first time, the @NASA_SLS rocket and @NASA_Orion fly together. #Artemis I begins a new chapter in human lunar exploration”.

One of the key goals for NASA is to test Orion’s heat shield as it enters Earth’s atmosphere.

The rocket was originally intended to debut in 2017, but it got delayed.

This mission was scheduled to launch on November 14 but tropical storm Nicole approaching the Florida coast forced the US space agency to push back the launch attempt.

Artemis I is the first integrated flight test of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, an uncrewed Orion spacecraft.

In September, the US space agency called off the Artemis I launch, owing to Tropical Storm Ian threat.

On September 3, NASA attempted to launch Artemis I but called it off after detecting a liquid hydrogen leak.

The next flight of the Artemis program is set for 2024 which will carry astronauts around the Moon and back without landing.

In 2025, NASA plans to launch the first crewed Moon landing since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. That will include the first woman and the first person of color to walk on the Moon.

Artemis I will provide a foundation for human exploration in deep space and demonstrate NASA’s commitment and capability to extend human existence to the Moon and beyond.

Kerala HC stays cheating case against Sunny Leone

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday stayed a cheating case registered against actor Sunny Leone (Karanjit Kaur Vohra) and her husband Daniel Weber.

Acting on a petition filed by the couple and their employee, the court stayed the case and all further actions related to it.

The complainant had alleged that despite paying Leone lakhs of rupees to appear and perform in events, she did not show up.

Subsequently, a case was registered against the couple alleging the commission of offenses punishable under Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating and dishonesty inducing delivery of property), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

Their plea also pointed out that the complainant had also moved a civil suit with the same allegations which was dismissed by a Magistrate Court in July 2022 for want of evidence.

Therefore, they sought to quash the proceedings against them.

In February 2021, single-judge Justice Ashok Menon granted the trio interim protection from arrest on their applications seeking anticipatory bail.

YouTube starts testing shopping features on Shorts

0

YouTube has started testing new shopping features on its short-video platform Shorts, along with affiliate marketing.

According to TechCrunch, the new shopping features will allow users to buy products as they browse Shorts.

Initially, the video-sharing platform added shopping features to Shorts for eligible creators in the US as a pilot, which will give them the ability to tag products from their own stores.

“We firmly believe YouTube is the best place for creators to build a business and shopping is a piece of that,” a spokesperson for YouTube was quoted as saying.

Moreover, users from the US, India, Brazil, Canada, and Australia can see the tags and shop through the Shorts.

The company says it plans to continue bringing tagging to more creators and countries in the future, according to the report.

The platform is also testing an affiliate program in the US, which will enable creators to earn commission by recommending products in their regular and Shorts videos.

The platform says that the test is still in its early days, and it plans to gradually expand the experiment to more creators next year, the report added.

Meanwhile, YouTube isn’t the only digital giant to bet on the future of shopping, as TikTok and Meta have also invested in the space.

Roadmap to Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 starts now, but it’s too fresh to think: Hardik Pandya

0

Hardik Pandya, the captain for India’s upcoming T20I series against New Zealand, believes that the roadmap to the next T20 World Cup in 2024, to be held in the West Indies and USA starts now. But at the same time, he added that ‘it is too fresh’ to think about the road to the showpiece event.

The upcoming three-match series against the Kane Williamson-led side in New Zealand, starting from November 18 at Sky Stadium in Wellington, will mark India’s return to T20I cricketing action, following their 10-wicket defeat to England in the semifinal of the Men’s T20 World Cup at Adelaide Oval last week.

“The next (Men’s) T20 World Cup will be in two years if I’m not wrong, so we have time. Till then, a lot of cricket will be played, and a lot of people will have enough chances. The roadmap starts now but it’s too fresh (to think) right now. We have a lot of time, so we’ll sit down and start having those conversations on those grounds.

“Right now, it’s about letting the boys enjoy it, it’s a beautiful country to play cricket, we’ll talk about the future later. Right now, it is just about making sure that we let the boys enjoy themselves here. It’s a beautiful country. You get a beautiful vibe as well. Let them enjoy right now, we’ll talk about the future later,” said Pandya in a pre-series press conference.

In the run-up to the tournament, India had changed their batting approach and won almost every bilateral series, either in-home or away conditions. In the T20 World Cup, they had topped Group 2 with four out of five wins.

But their quest to end a nine-year wait for a World Cup ended with Alex Hales and Jos Buttler stitching an unbroken opening stand to chase down 168/6 posted by India with an over to spare.

“I mean, we all know that there’s a disappointment in the World Cup but we are professionals. We need to cope with it. How we cope up with our successes as well, we also cope up without failures and move forward to get better and rectify the mistakes which we did and just make sure that in this we don’t repeat them,” added Hardik.

Asked if India had a point to prove to the cricketing world going into this series against New Zealand post the scathing criticism that the side was subjected to following their exit from the T20 World Cup, Hardik was quick to brush aside such thoughts.

“Obviously when you don’t do well, people will have their opinion, which we respect. I understand people have different points of view. Being at the international level, I don’t think we need to prove anything to anyone.

“It’s a sport, you keep trying to get better, and eventually when the result is supposed to happen, it will happen. Definitely, there are things we need to work on, which we are aware of, and going forward we will rectify and work on it.”

G20: Modi, Sunak to confirm new bespoke route for young professionals

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart Rishi Sunak will meet on Wednesday at the G20 Summit in Bali during which the two leaders will confirm “a new bespoke, reciprocal route” that will open in early 2023 to give young professionals a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part in a professional and cultural exchange.

Hours after Sunak and Modi met on the sidelines of the summit on Tuesday, the British Prime Minister announced that 3,000 Indians will be granted visas annually to come to the UK.

Under the new UK-India Young Professionals Scheme, the country will offer 3,000 places annually to 18-30-year-old degree-educated Indian nationals to come to the UK to live and work here for up to two years.

According to a statement issued by the UK Prime Minister’s Office, India is the first visa-national country to benefit from such a scheme, highlighting the strength of the UK-India Migration and Mobility Partnership agreed upon last year.

“The Indo-Pacific is increasingly crucial for our security and our prosperity. It is teeming with dynamic and fast-growing economies, and the next decade will be defined by what happens in this region,” Sunak said in a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office.

“I know first-hand the incredible value of the deep cultural and historic ties we have with India. I am pleased that even more of India’s brightest young people will now have the opportunity to experience all that life in the UK has to offer, and vice-versa, making our economies and societies richer.”

The scheme will be reciprocal.

“The launch of the scheme is a significant moment both for the bilateral relationship with India and the UK’s wider commitment to forging stronger links with the Indo-Pacific region to strengthen both the economies,” the statement added.

Nearly a quarter of all international students in Britain are from India, and Indian investment in the UK supports 95,000 jobs across the UK.

The UK is also negotiating a trade deal with India, which would build on the UK-India trading relationship, already worth 24 billion pounds, and allow the UK to seize the opportunities presented by India’s growing economy.

Besides Modi, Sunak is also scheduled will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday, becoming the first British Prime Minister to meet the latter in almost five years.

He will be clear on the need for China and the UK, as permanent members of the UN Security Council and major global economies, to establish a frank and constructive relationship.

Brazil, France, England are World Cup favourites, says Messi

0

Brazil, France, and England will be the biggest obstacles to Argentina’s hopes of ending a 36-year FIFA World Cup title drought in Qatar, according to Albiceleste captain Lionel Messi.

“Whenever we talk about candidates, we always talk about the same teams,” Messi said in an interview with the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL).

“If I have to put some above others I think Brazil, France, and England are a little bit above the rest. But the World Cup is so difficult and so complicated that anything can happen.”

Two-time champions Argentina will kick off their campaign against Saudi Arabia on November 22 before also facing Mexico and Poland in Group C, reports Xinhua.

Lionel Scaloni’s men are undefeated in their past 35 games, a sequence that includes the 2021 Copa America final against Brazil. They are just two games shy of the record for the longest run of international matches without defeat, currently held by Italy.

Messi will be playing in his fifth and almost certainly his last World Cup, having appeared on football’s biggest stage for the first time at the 2006 tournament in Germany.

The closest he has come to lift the Jules Rimet trophy was in 2014 when Argentina lost the final against Germany following an extra-time goal from Mario Goetze.

“We are very excited. We have a very good group that is enthusiastic, but we are taking things little by little,” said the 35-year-old Paris Saint-Germain forward.

“We hope to start the World Cup in the best way to face everything that comes after. The more you play and the more time you spend on the pitch, the more you get to know each other,” he added.

Juventus right-back Danilo has also said that Brazil could not hide from the fact they are among the favorites to win the FIFA World Cup.

The five-time world champions will begin their campaign against Serbia on November 24 before also facing Switzerland and Cameroon in Group G.

“It is undeniable that we are one of the favorites,” Danilo told reporters during Brazil’s pre-World Cup training camp in Turin.

Brazil earned a direct berth in football’s premier international tournament by finishing top of the South American qualifiers with 14 wins, three draws, and not a single loss.

Danilo said he and his teammates felt a sense of pride and responsibility as they represent more than 200 million people in their football-mad homeland.

“We have important footballers who play for the best teams in the world,” said Danilo, who has been capped 46 times since his international debut in 2011.

“When we go out onto the pitch wearing the national team shirt, we always have the feeling of being those children in Brazil who dream of playing and winning the World Cup, to embrace the family with the Cup in hand.

“That feeling is always present with us and it gives us a strength you can’t imagine,” he added.
