SA Test skipper Elgar wants different coaches for different formats after Boucher’s departure

0

South Africa Test skipper Dean Elgar has upped the pitch for different coaches for different formats and urged Cricket South Africa (CSA) to learn from the set-up put in place by England, who have separate coaches and support staff for white-ball and Test formats.

Former New Zealand cricketer Brendon McCullium is the England Test coach, while former Australia women’s team head coach Matthew Mott is the white-ball strategist of the side led by Jos Buttler. Under the leadership of the two coaches, England has done remarkably well in recent times, winning six of the last seven Tests against New Zealand, India, and South Africa respectively under McCullum, while under Mott, they have lifted the recently-concluded T20 World Cup in Australia.

Elgar in his column for supersport.com also said while England wasn’t a firm favorite coming into the T20 World Cup, they built momentum in the Super 12 stage and then went on to assert themselves in the semifinals and final.

“England clearly wasn’t the favorites when the tournament started but they definitely built their way up through the Super 12 stage and then played an outstanding semifinal and final. It just goes to show that you need that momentum on your side to win a World Cup title. England peaked at the right time and the result ultimately went in their favor,” said Elgar in his column.

He also opined that split coaching is the way to go for the Proteas from here on after Temba Bavuma’s side shockingly lost to the Netherlands in the last Super 12 game at the Adelaide Oval and were eliminated from the T20 World Cup.

“There is no doubt that we can learn from England in terms of having different coaches for different formats. I think that is going to be the trend going forward because with the amount of cricket played these days on the international scene, it’s tough for one coach to keep everything under control. The split-coaching role is something that we as Cricket South Africa will look into.

“England has had the split-coaching role for quite a few years now and it has definitely worked for them. They are now the strongest white-ball team in the world with the 50-over and T20 trophies stationed in their cabinet,” added Elgar.

Former South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Mark Boucher had declared earlier this year that he would be stepping down as the Proteas head coach after the T20 World Cup assignment and CSA would be looking for a new head coach with a busy international schedule ahead of them.

World Cup Group H preview: Portugal, don’t get comfortable

0

With the 2022 FIFA World Cup approaching, the participating teams are all fine-tuning their preparations for the quadrennial gala.

Star-studded Portugal led by Cristiano Ronaldo is the favorite in Group H, but it is by no means a one-horse race, as Uruguay, South Korea, and Ghana will all have what it takes to make the competition wide open.

Portugal enters the scene on November 24 by taking on Ghana, then meet Uruguay before their final group game with South Korea.

In 2018, Portugal crashed out in the round of 16 after a 2-1 defeat to Uruguay. And in Brazil in 2014, Portugal suffered a group-stage exit despite a 2-1 victory over Ghana. Pushing the timeline backward further, South Korea enjoyed a shock win over Portugal en route to their history-making success in 2002.

For the 2016 European champions, their confidence comes from superstar Ronaldo. The 37-year-old Manchester United hitman has struggled for consistent playing time under coach Erik ten Hag this season and looks unlikely to play for the Red Devils again after criticizing the club in an explosive TV appearance, but he is arguably the trump card for Portugal at the international level, reports Xinhua.

Diogo Jota is a huge loss for head coach Fernando Santos on the forward line, but Rafael Leao will fill the important role in the absence of the Liverpool forward. Tipped as AC Milan’s ace player, Leao has exploded onto the scene in recent years.

In midfield, Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes have the ability to move the needle, while the partnership between veteran Pepe and stalwart Ruben Dias has always been a sturdy presence at the back, with full-back Joao Cancelo pushing the ball down the flank into the opposition third and also lending a hand on the defensive side.

Ronaldo has clarified his intention to continue playing for his country until Euro 2024, but given his condition, this may be his last chance to lift the World Cup.

Considered Portugal’s biggest threat, Uruguay attracted attention before kick-off as they announced their 26-man squad through a well-designed video that went viral, but the two-time World Champions need to be sharper on the pitch in what will likely be the last World Cup appearance for Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani, Diego Godin, Fernando Muslera and Martin Caceres.

A dismal start to the qualifying campaign saw Uruguay part ways with Oscar Tabarez before successor Diego Alonso eventually righted the ship.

With two prolific strikers in Suarez and Cavani, La Celeste had yielded some fine achievements in the last decade. As Cavani and Suarez are entering the twilight of their careers, Alonso still has Darwin Nunez at his disposal.

Despite a shaky introduction to the Premier League, the 23-year-old Liverpool player enhanced his confidence by bagging a brace in his last game against Southampton before the World Cup break.

As for 24-year-old Federico Valverde, the starlet is flying high at Real Madrid and becoming instrumental under Carlo Ancelotti. The World Cup is a golden opportunity for the midfielder to cement his big-game status.

The presence of Portugal and Uruguay may cast a shadow on South Korea’s future and head coach Paulo Bento and star player Son Heung-min now have to prove that they can survive a tough test.

Questions were looming over South Korea when Son underwent surgery following a facial injury until the Spurs forward posted a morale-boosting message expressing his fitness for Qatar.

Known for their mental strength, South Korea has occasionally played the role of giant killers, notably the 2-0 upset over defending champions Germany 2-0 in the 2018 World Cup.

For South Korea, the second group fixture against Ghana is a must-win game, while the African side has the same thoughts.

After failing to qualify for the 2018 tournament, the Black Stars are celebrating their return to the World Cup stage and aim to upset the odds.

The squad features experienced and talented players capable of rising to the task. It will be up to coach Otto Addo to find the right blend and give the team the self-belief they need to shake things up in Qatar.

It is worth highlighting the clash between Ghana and Uruguay, as Ghana was eliminated in highly dramatic fashion by Uruguay in the quarterfinals at South Africa in 2010, when Suarez purposely blocked a goalbound strike with his hand, preventing Ghana from making history and becoming the first African team to reach the World Cup semifinals.

Amazon Clinic launched as virtual health service for common conditions

0

Amazon on Tuesday launched Amazon Clinic, a message-based virtual healthcare service that offers treatments in the US for over 20 “common health conditions” such as allergies, dandruff, hair loss, birth control, erectile dysfunction, and acne.

The service will connect customers with affordable virtual care options when and how they need it – at home, after dinner, at the grocery store, or on the go.

Initially, the service will be available in 32 states.

“We believe that improving both the occasional and ongoing engagement experience is necessary to making care dramatically better. Amazon Clinic is just one of the ways we’re working to empower people to take control of their health by providing access to convenient, affordable care in partnership with trusted providers,” Amazon said in a blog post.

To get started with Amazon Clinic, customers will need to select their condition, then choose their preferred provider from a list of licensed and qualified telehealth providers.

Further, they will be required to complete a short intake questionnaire.

Customers and clinicians will then be able to communicate directly through a secure message-based portal, giving them the ability to communicate whenever it is convenient for them” anytime, anywhere, according to the blog post.

Finally, the clinician will send a personalized treatment plan via the portal.

Sunrisers release Kane Williamson; CSK retain Jadeja, let go Bravo

0

Kane Williamson, who led New Zealand to the semifinals of the T20 World Cup in Australia, was on Tuesday not retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League.

Fellow Southerners Chennai Super Kings have retained India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja despite an acrimonious relationship with the left-arm spinner over the captaincy issue, along with M.S. Dhoni, and have released West Indies great Dwayne Bravo, the 39-year-old T20 itinerant who now seems struggling towards the end of a chequered career.

But the big name to be released is Williamson.

Williamson, who captained the Sunrisers in the 2022 edition, had recently recovered from an injury and has been struggling for form in recent times. Thus the Sunrisers expectedly decided to release him from the contract.

“Always our Kane Mama!,” the franchisee wrote in a post on its social media handle with a thank you note to Kane Williamson.

Williamson has in all played 76 matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad, scoring 2101 runs at an average of 36.22 and a strike rate of126.03.

While releasing Williamson, the Sunrisers have retained Abhishek Sharma, South Africa’s Aiden Markram, young pace sensation Umran Malik, Glenn Phillips of New Zealand, veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Tripathi, Abdul Samad, South African Marco Jansen, Washington Sundar, Karthik Tyagi, T Natarajan, and Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi.

They will now go into the mini-auction next month shopping for a captain as none of the retained players has the experience of leading a top-level side.

Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings have released West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo along with New Zealand’s Adam Milne, Englishman Chris Jordan, and Indians N Jagadeesan, C Hari Nishaanth, K Bhagat Varma, KM Asif, and Rohin Uthappa, who had retired from all forms of cricket in September.

Bravo has been with CSK since 2011 and has won the Purple Cap twice (2013 and 2015). He was bought by CSK for Rs 4.40 crore in the 2022 IPL Auction.

The CSK pulled off a surprise by retaining Ravindra Jadeja, who has, as per reports, shown inclination for leaving the franchise after he was made captain for the 2022 edition but stepped down in the middle of a disastrous campaign.

He was reportedly unhappy with the way he was treated by the CSK management. But it seems they have ironed out their differences and Jadeja will continue to “Whistle Podo”.

“Eighth Wonder to stay with us!” the CSK announced on Twitter with a picture of Jadeja whistling.

However, it looks like a quick fix by the CSK management, a short-term solution because Dhoni will not continue in 2024 and they will need a new captain. Will Jadeja get back the reins after the 2022 failure, only time will tell!

Alex Hales opts out of IPL 2023; joins Billings and Cummins

0
England’s T20 World Cup winner Alex Hales has opted out of the Indian Premier League 2023, his franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) announced on Tuesday. Hales joins compatriot Sam Billings and Australian Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins to miss the next season of IPL.

“We respect @patcummins30, @sambillings, and @AlexHales1 ‘s decision of skipping next year’s IPL due to personal reasons and national team commitments. All the best, guys! #KnightRidersFamily #AmiKKR,” KKR said in a tweet.

The 29-year-old pace bowler, who had a below-par showing in the ICC T20 World Cup at home with the defending champions not able to progress to the semifinals, was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the mega auction earlier this year for Rs 7.25 crore and played five games, taking seven wickets.

Earlier in the day, the 29-year-old Cummins made the call to skip next year’s IPL tournament, pointing to a heavy international workload.

“I’ve made the difficult decision to miss next year’s IPL. The international schedule is packed with Tests and ODIs for the next 12 months, so will take some rest ahead of an Ashes series and (ODI) World Cup,” Cummins said on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Sam Billings decided to withdraw, saying that he wants to focus on the longer formats of the game.

“Have taken the tough decision that I won’t be taking part in the next IPL @KKRiders. Looking to focus on longer format cricket at the start of the English summer with @kentcricket,” Billings said in his tweet.

“Thank you so much for the opportunity@kkriders! Loved every minute of it. An amazing franchise with some brilliant people. Hopefully, see you again in the future,” he added.

The team led by Shreyas Iyer has acquired Shardul Thakur, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Lockie Ferguson via trades.

Rajasthan Royals retain Ashwin, Buttler; release James Neesham, Daryl Mitchell ahead of IPL 2023 Auction

0

Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday revealed their list of retained players ahead of the Indian Premier League 2023 Auction. The franchise has retained a total of 16 players, which includes 12 Indians and four players from overseas, and released nine players in total – comprising four Indians and five overseas players.

The franchise has retained their captain Sanju Samson, England’s T20 World Cup-winning skipper Jos Buttler, Indian spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal, experienced New Zealand pacer Trent Boult, Indian internationals Navdeep Saini, Prasidh Krishna and Devdutt Padikkal, along with West Indies’ destructive batter Shimron Hetmyer and bowler Obed McCoy.

Young Indian stars Kuldeep Sen, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Riyan Parag have been retained, as have left-arm fast bowler Kuldip Yadav, spinner KC Cariappa and wicket-keeper batter Dhruv Jurel.

Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara commented on his team’s thinking behind the retention process, while also revealing how tough it was for the franchise to make some decisions after the Royals finished as Runners Up in the last edition.

He said, “We obviously had a brilliant season last year but fell short in the end in the Final. The team that we’ve had has been extraordinary in each department, and we are delighted at the prospect of retaining the core group which has contributed immensely to the success of this franchise. At the same time, as a high-performance team, you have to keep evolving and looking for squad-enhancing opportunities in order to stay at the top. Our ambition is to go that extra mile in IPL 2023, and hence some decisions have been made which give us greater flexibility in the Auction to compete with other teams and go for players who we feel can add value to this squad.”

“As you can imagine, we are of course gutted that we’re having to let go of some of the players who have been an important part of our set-up last season, both on and off the field, and we want to take this opportunity to thank them for their immense contribution to the Royals. We wish them all the best for what’s to come, and hope to cross paths with them soon.”

Retained- Indians: Sanju Samson, Ravichandra Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Prasidh Krishna, Devdutt Padikkal, Navdeep Saini, Kuldeep Sen, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, Kuldip Yadav, KC Cariappa, Dhruv Jurel.

Overseas: Jos Buttler, Trent Boult, Shimron Hetmyer, Obed McCoy

Released- Indians: Karun Nair, Anunay Singh, Tejas Baroka, Shubham Garhwal,

Asian Airgun Championship: Four more gold medals for India

0

After the Air Rifle shooters, it was the turn of the Air Pistol shooters as India swept all the available gold medals on day six of the 15th Asian Airgun Championship in Daegu, Korea.

Shiva Narwal won the Men’s 10m Air Pistol while Sagar Dangi picked up the Junior Men’s gold. In addition, both the Men’s and Women’s Youth teams also won their respective competitions to make it a four-gold day for India. They now have 17 gold medals from the competition so far.

Shiva got the better of experienced Korean Park Daehun in the Men’s Air Pistol final, taking him down 17-13 in a close encounter. He also had the Korean number in the ranking round where he topped with 253.7. Park was way behind second with 250.2. India’s Vijayveer Sidhu also picked up a bronze in the event, after he finished the ranking round in third place with 248.0.

In the Junior Men’s Air Pistol, it was a 1-2 finish for India, as Sagar Dangi overcame Samrat Rana by a similar 17-13 margin to claim gold. Mukhammad Kamalov of Uzbekistan won bronze.

India’s third gold came in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol Youth event, when the trio of Sandeep Bishnoi, Sahil, and Amit Sharma beat a Korean team 16-8 in the gold medal clash.

The fourth and final gold of the day came in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol Youth event where Kanishka Dagar, Yashsavi Joshi, and Harnavdeep Kaur beat yet another team from hosts Korea 16-10 in the final match.

Early on Monday, Sandeep Bishnoi had also claimed the 10m Air Pistol Men Youth gold when he defeated Uzbek Veniamin Nikitin 16-8 in the title clash.

With three more days of competitions left, India has already amassed 28 medals so far including 18 gold, six silver, and four bronze medals in a show of complete dominance at the continental level in the Air events.

Morning exercise lowers risk of heart disease and stroke: Study

0

Morning physical activity is associated with the lowest risk of heart disease and stroke, as per a new study.

According to the study, which was published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, the findings were consistent regardless of total daily activity.

“It is well established that exercise is good for heart health, and our study now indicates that morning activity seems to be most beneficial,” said study author Gali Albalak of Leiden University Medical Centre, the Netherlands.

“The findings were particularly pronounced in women, and applied to both early birds and night owls,” she added.

The study used data from the UK Biobank (a large-scale biomedical database and research resource). It included 86,657 adults between the ages of 42 and 78 who were free of cardiovascular disease at the start. The average age was 62, and 58 percent were women.

Over the course of six to eight years, 2,911 participants developed coronary artery disease, and 796 had a stroke, said the study.

When peak activity times were compared over a 24-hour period, being most active between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. was associated with the lowest risks of both heart disease and stroke.

In a second analysis, the researchers divided participants into four groups based on peak physical activity time – midday, early morning (8 a.m.), late morning (10 a.m.), and evening (7 p.m.).

After adjusting for age and gender, participants who were most active in the early or late morning had 11 per cent and 16 per cent lower risks of incident coronary artery disease, respectively, compared to the reference group, the study added.

“Our findings add to the evidence on the health benefits of being physically active by suggesting that morning activity, and especially the late morning, maybe the most advantageous,” said Albalak.

Google’s Health Connect app now available in beta on Play Store

0

Google has announced that its Health Connect app is available to download as a public beta via the Play Store.

Also, more than 10 health and fitness apps have launched integrations with Health Connect, including Fitbit, Samsung Health, Google Fit, MyFitnessPal, Oura, Peloton and more.

The purpose of Health Connect is to provide centralized access to health and fitness data from various eligible apps, Google said in a blogpost.

“With Health Connect, building an integration with a new app is as simple as reading in new data from Health Connect, rather than building a whole new integration,” it added.

The app syncs health and fitness data from qualifying platforms enables other apps to access this data with the user’s permission and gives users access to centralised privacy controls.

Google said that Health Connect offers a standardised data format that covers more than 40 data types across six categories.

The scheme covers a wide range of use cases, from exercises to sleep tracking to vital signs.

Previously, users had to switch between several apps to manage data permissions in the past, and developers had to build out permissions management UIs themselves.

Therefore, with Health Connect, users can easily manage permissions in a single place, with granular controls to see which apps are accessing data at any given time, according to the blogpost.

ISRO’s rocket launch and tracking fee is nominal: Skyroot Aerospace

0

The fee charged by the Indian space agency for the rocket launch and tracking services is nominal, said a top official of private rocket startup Skyroot Aerospace.

“The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) provides integration facility, launchpad, range communications and tracking support before and during our rocket launch,” Pawan Kumar Chandana, CEO, and Co-Founder told Media.

“The fee is reasonable. However, we won’t be able to share contractual details as we are bound by a non-disclosure agreement with ISRO and IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre — the regulator for the private sector space industry),” Chandana added.

Skyroot Aerospace’s rocket Vikram-S with three small satellites is scheduled for launch on November 18 at 11.30 a.m.

“Launch is likely on the 18th as the weather is predicted to be ideal. Due to inclement weather, we got an updated launch window of November 15-19, 2022,” Chandana said.

According to him, the Vikram-S rocket is a scaled-down version of the Vikram-1 rocket. The former is a single-stage rocket whereas the latter is a multi-stage vehicle.

“Almost all our systems flying in Vikram-S were designed in-house, except for a few sensors which were imported,” Chandana said.

The rocket will be powered by a single stage to help test and validate the majority of the technologies in the Vikram series of rockets.

The company plans to have three rocket variants: Vikram I – payload or carrying capacity 480 kg to 500 km low inclination orbit (LIO); 290 kg to 500 km sun-synchronous and polar orbit (SSPO); Vikram II – 595 kg to 500 km LIO, 400 kg to 500 km SSPO and Vikram III – 815 kg to 500 km LIO, 560 kg to 500 km SSPO.

Skyroot Aerospace’s rockets are named ‘Vikram’ as a tribute to the founder of the Indian Space program and renowned scientist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai.

Chandana said Vikram-1 is expected to fly during the third quarter of the calendar year 2023.

K’taka Cong launches campaign against painting of classrooms in saffron colour

Karnataka Congress has launched a campaign against the state government’s “Viveka Scheme” under which newly-built classrooms will be painted in saffron color.

The Congress started the campaign with the hashtag “CM Uncle” and urged Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to first build toilets for children instead of painting the classrooms.

Through the campaign, Congress has posed questions to Bommai on behalf of school children.

“Throughout the state, there is a lack of infrastructure in schools. The children are struggling without toilets. CM Uncle, before painting school buildings in saffron, first build toilets, give us hygienic drinking water and facilities that would attract children to schools,” the party tweeted.

The Congress also said that the state government is implementing the scheme in the name of Swami Vivekananda who was responsible for the industrial and scientific revolution in the country, but the Chief Minister is not “forthcoming with implementing programs which inculcate scientific temperament in students”.

“There is no good teaching, no proper midday meal, what action are you going to take? The scheme to give eggs to malnourished children is not being implemented properly. Take action to distribute eggs, do not give room for corruption in purchasing eggs also,” the party added.

Under the “Viveka Scheme”, 8,100 classrooms will be painted in saffron color.

Besides this, the BJP-led Karnataka government is also set to start meditation classes for primary, high school, and class 11 and 12 students.

KKR’s Pat Cummins announces unavailability for 2023 IPL season

0

Australia’s Test and One-day International captain Pat Cummins will not take part in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season in order to be fully fit and committed for next year’s ODI World Cup in India and the Ashes in England.

On Tuesday, Cummins took to social media to announce his unavailability for IPL 2023.

“I’ve made the difficult decision to miss next year’s IPL. The international schedule is packed with Tests and ODIs for the next 12 months, so will take some rest ahead of an Ashes series and (ODI) World Cup,” Cummins said on Twitter.

“Thanks so much to @KKRiders for their understanding. Such a terrific team of players and staff and I hope I can get back there ASAP.”

A report in sen.com.au said that Mitchell Starc could also miss the 2023 Indian Premier League season. Australia will play a five-Test Ashes series in England across June and July next year. India will then host the 2023 ODI World Cup in October-November.
