YouTube Music and Premium hit 80 mn paid subscribers

0

YouTube has surpassed 80 million Music and Premium subscribers globally, including trial users. It is 30 million subscribers more than the 50 million video streaming platform announced last year.

“YouTube’s twin engine of revenue — subscriptions and ads — is the real deal,” said Lyor Cohen, global head of Music, at YouTube. According to Cohen, there were many reasons behind this increase in subscribers.

The company has leveled up ‘YouTube Premium’ with features like afterparties, which give users unique access to Livestream content and access discounts on the newest Google hardware and services.

‘Premium’ allows fans to immerse themselves in what they love and helps them explore it in depth. The Music app has over 100 million official songs, “plus an expansive catalog of live performances, remixes, and diamond in the rough deep-cuts”.

It makes it easier for users to enjoy every music format: long-form music videos, short-form videos, live streams, podcasts, and more, Cohen said.

The company offers a platform to users where they can find music, listen to it, and interact with it. Recently, the video streaming platform announced a new feature called “Go Live Together” that would allow eligible creators to invite a guest to live stream with them.

Massive global Meta layoffs hit India teams

0

The worst lay-off in the global tech industry by Meta, which saw 11,000 employees being shown the door, has hit India teams too, albeit marginally, reliable sources said on Wednesday.

In one of the worst lay-offs ever in the tech industry after Twitter – which saw 90 percent of India’s team being sacked – Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg fired about 13 percent of the global workforce and extended the hiring freeze through Q1 2023.

Sources told media that layoffs impacted the Meta India team across verticals, although the exact number of affected employees could not be ascertained.

The India unit of Meta did not immediately comment on a media query.

Meta is likely to have up to 400 employees in the country, and its business is doing relatively well.

According to business intelligence platform Tofler, the net profit of Facebook India Online Services, the registered entity of Meta, jumped to Rs 297 crore in FY22 in comparison to Rs 128 crore in FY21, while its revenues grew 56 percent to Rs 2,324 crore in FY22 from Rs 1,485 crore in FY21.

Last week, Meta announced that its India head, Ajit Mohan, decided to step down from his role at the company to pursue another opportunity.

Mohan has taken over the Indian operations of Snap, which is the parent company of Snapchat, which is growing exponentially in the country, especially among the youth.

Meanwhile, Zuckerberg said that as a severance measure, the company will pay 16 weeks of base pay, along with two additional weeks for every year of service, “with no cap”.

“Outside the US, support will be similar, and we’ll follow up soon with separate processes that take into account local employment laws,” he added.

US launches plan to finance decommissioning of coal

0

US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry marked Finance Day at COP27 on Wednesday by launching a new Energy Transition Accelerator (ETA) in a bid to finance the decommissioning of coal and accelerate clean energy deployment in developing countries.

At the launch event, Kerry said: “Our intention is to put the carbon market to work to deploy capital to speed the transition from dirty to clean power, specifically for two purposes — to retire unabated coal-fired power and accelerate renewable.”

Yet in its current shape, the plan lacks integrity and risks undermining the work being done on Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETPs), Article 6, and the UN High-Level Expert Group on Net Zero.

Developing countries have been clear that the focus of the finance negotiations at this COP needs to be on grant and concessional finance to overcome the structural barriers to the energy transition.

This plan risks being a distraction from that work, giving corporations in the Global North access to yet another scheme to delay reducing emissions now.

The priority — especially on Finance Day at COP27 — is mobilizing more real finance. The work that has been done by developing countries with the financial reform agenda and through the Just Energy Transition Partnerships has been very clear on the fact that there needs to be additional grant and concessional finance, as well as real public finance.

There are other priorities where the US has the chance to make significant structural changes. For instance, the US can significantly influence the reform of the Capital Adequacy Framework for MDBs, which would allow banks to leverage a trillion in concessional finance.

With the G20 meetings coming up, the priority should be on driving this agenda forward.

The US plan states that the program will only be open to “companies committed to achieving net zero no later than 2050 and science-based interim targets”.

But we know that commitments are not enough –most corporate 2050 net-zero commitments are not underpinned by plans to reduce emissions rapidly enough. Seventy-five percent of “climate leading” companies in the Climate Action 100+ have a target of net zero by 2050, but only 10 percent have plans compatible with the Paris Agreement.

Responding to the “Energy Transition Accelerator” plan, Vaibhav Chaturvedi, Fellow, Council for Energy Environment and Water, said: “The US’s Energy Transition Accelerator is arguably the first large-scale structured programme that will demonstrate how Article 6.2 will look in practice.

“This is a very important announcement and I hope it is able to showcase successful case studies soon that the world can learn from. However, if the US companies buy emissions from India, then India will not be able to account for these in its emission reduction. Even if both the US and India get 50 percent each of the carbon mitigation credits generated, that means India has to let go of the 50 percent emissions mitigation implemented within its boundary.”

Ulka Kelkar, Director, of the Climate Change Programme, World Resources Institute (India), said: “What developing countries need is predictable finance — not offset markets. The proposed initiative cannot make up for the US’ failure to provide its fair share of climate finance — an estimated $40 billion of the unmet goal of $100 billion a year.

“It also should not substitute for deep decarbonization needed within the US and other industrialized countries. For developing countries like India, who have been raising their climate ambition, the first priority would be to meet their own targets and not provide offsets for reductions in developed nations.”

Bayern whitewash Bremen to extend lead in Bundesliga

0

Serge Gnabry’s hat-trick helped Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich to cruise 6-1 past hapless Werder Bremen on Tuesday.

The Bavarians made a fairy tale start on home soil and broke the deadlock with six minutes gone when Jamal Musiala tapped home the opener from close range.
Bremen responded straight away as Anthony Jung latched onto Mitchell Weiser’s good build-up work to restore parity moments later, reports Xinhua.

Bayern should have retaken the lead but Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting couldn’t beat Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka from the penalty spot in the 15th minute.

The record German champions continued powerful and eventually made it 2-1 six minutes later as Gnabry collected a loose ball inside the box to curl the ball past Pavlenka into the far corner.

The hosts were shocked and couldn’t put up resistance whereas Bayern worked out a 4-1 lead as goals from Leon Goretzka and Gnabry destroyed Bremen’s hopes of a comeback before the halftime whistle.

Bayern ceased attacking after the restart but still Bremen couldn’t do any damage to the hosts’ defense.

The frontrunners, on the other hand, weren’t done with the scoring and extended their advantage in the closing stages as Gnabry wrapped up his hat-trick in the 82nd minute before Mathys Tel finished off a solo run to round off a 6-1 victory on home soil.

“Winning four straight games on home soil with more than four goals speaks for itself. We had a difficult start as we wasted a penalty and had to swallow the equalizer. We remained calm though and scored three goals before the break. The boys staged a great performance for the supporters. Compliments to the boys,” said Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Elsewhere, Wolfsburg extended their unbeaten run to nine games after ending Borussia Dortmund’s three-game winning streak with a 2-0 victory.

Bottom side Bochum flabbergasted struggling Borussia Monchengladbach and Konstantinos Mavropanos’ late winner helped Stuttgart edge Hertha Berlin.

T20 World Cup: India, England aim for a place in the final through ‘clash of the equals’

0

It is very rare in global tournaments that teams that are on par with each other would clash in the semifinals, instead of the general expectation of them meeting in the final.

At a sunny Adelaide, India, and England, two sides with equal amounts of firepower, will be vying for a spot in the final when they meet at the Adelaide Oval in the second semifinal of the Men’s T20 World Cup on Thursday.

Clashes between England and India in T20Is have been frequent and competitive in the past few years, including in the bilateral series in July. But they have not met in a T20 World Cup match for a decade, or in the knockout phase of an ICC tournament since the 2013 Champions Trophy final.

While India entered the knockouts on the back of superlative batting from Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav and a hugely effective bowling attack in Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Hardik Pandya, and Ravichandran Ashwin, England bat very deep, possess all-round strength and have the pacers as well as spinners to challenge oppositions.

First things first, Thursday’s semifinal is going to be played on a used pitch. With short square boundaries and longer front-of-the-square dimensions at Adelaide Oval, it makes the toss crucial and batting first becomes all the more important. The importance of spinners also increases as the pitch tends to be sluggish later in the match.

In that case, India would really want for their top order to set the tone right in the first six overs. In the power-play phase of the tournament, India scored 5.96 runs per over, which is less than England’s 6.79 runs. With the new ball moving around, it has meant that India had to move away from its ultra-attacking approach to being cautious.

Moreover, the highest opening partnership in the tournament between Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul is just 27. Kohli currently leads the run-charts though he has been a little cautious against spin, while Suryakumar is third on the list with an extremely-high strike rate of 193.96.

Suryakumar, the right-handed batter who is also the top-ranked T20I batter, has also been a huge force behind India having the best run rate in the last four overs of the tournament at 11.90 runs per over and changing the tempo of the innings to propel India from a par score to a winning total.

With the dilemma between Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant still on apart from Hardik Pandya doing nothing worthwhile with the bat after the opener against Pakistan, India needs to carefully ponder over who between the two wicketkeeper-batters has to be picked for an extremely crunch game.

With the ball, left-arm pacer Arshdeep has been a revelation with 10 scalps in five matches while senior right-arm pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has an economy rate of 5.4 and has also dismissed Jos Buttler five times in T20 matches. But the pocket of weakness that India can look to exploit could come through their spinners.

With left-arm spinner Axar Patel not excelling much in Australian conditions, he could be replaced by leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal to team up with the off-spin of Ravichandran Ashwin. Moreover, with England’s batting strike rate against spin being just 100.5 and averaging just 22 in the tournament, it is an area that India will definitely look to exploit.

Though they have the power and style of Buttler, Alex Hales, Ben Stokes, Liam Livingstone, Harry Brook, and Moeen Ali with the bat, England’s batting hasn’t clicked in unison yet in the tournament.

Their death-overs bowling, which was a huge weakness in last year’s tournament, has become a huge strength, as seen from the economy rate of six and picking seven wickets in this phase, with left-arm pacer Sam Curran being the leader in their end-overs bowling transformation, while the right-arm pace duo of Stokes and Chris Woakes handles the fast-bowling duties upfront.

England also has some fitness concerns with Dawid Malan nursing a groin injury and tearaway pacer Mark Wood having body stiffness. India also had some hand-in-the-mouth moments when Rohit and Kohli took some blows in the practice sessions, but were fine later.

Come Thursday, the Adelaide Oval will be bright and breathtaking in readiness for a clash of equals to decide the second finalist of the Men’s T20 World Cup.

T20 World Cup, 1st semifinal: Daryl Mitchell’s fifty takes New Zealand to 152-4 against Pakistan

0

A fighting fifty from Daryl Mitchell (53 not out off 35) helped New Zealand post 152-4 against Pakistan in the first semifinal of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), here on Wednesday.

Apart from Mitchell, the likes of Kane Williamson (46 off 42), and Devon Conway (21 off 20) were the other main contributors with the bat for New Zealand, who chose to bat first after winning the toss.

On the other hand, Shaheen Afridi was the most successful bowler for Pakistan with his 2/24, and Mohammad Nawaz (1/12) was the other wicket-taker.

Brief scores: New Zealand 152-4 in 20 overs (Daryl Mitchell 53 not out, Kane Williamson 46; Shaheen Afridi 2/24) vs Pakistan.

Meta gears up for ‘broad’ job cuts across its global workforce

0

After Twitter, Meta was set to lay off thousands of employees and the company’s Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly told the workforce to be ready for what was coming their way.

According to Wall Street Journal, in his latest meeting with senior executives, Zuckerberg is said to have confirmed “broad cuts” across the company, starting from Wednesday.

Employees who lose their jobs would be provided at least four months of salary as a severance, according to the report.

The mass layoff is the first broad head-count reduction to occur in Meta’s (earlier Facebook) 18-year history.

The Facebook and Instagram parent company reported over 87,000 employees (as of September).

The company declined to comment, referring to Zuckerberg’s recent statement that the company would “focus our investments on a small number of high-priority growth areas”.

In June, Meta’s chief product officer Chris Cox warned employees of “serious times”, saying that the workers must “execute flawlessly in an environment of slower growth”.

During the company’s earnings call last month, Zuckerberg said: “In 2023, we’re going to focus our investments on a small number of high-priority growth areas.”

“So that means some teams will grow meaningfully, but most other teams will stay flat or shrink over the next year. In aggregate, we expect to end 2023 as either roughly the same size or even a slightly smaller organization than we are today,” he had mentioned.

Meta posted another quarterly revenue decline in Q3 as investors began to lose faith in its loss-making, billion-dollars metaverse dream.

In the third quarter (Q3), Meta’s revenue declined 4 percent year over year to hit $27.7 billion. This decline was owing to Meta’s huge losses in Reality Labs, Meta’s virtual reality division, which lost $3.672 billion in Q3.

T20 World Cup: Jos Buttler banking on players’ inputs of playing previously in Adelaide Oval

0

With England all set to play their semifinal against India in the Men’s T20 World Cup at the Adelaide Oval, skipper Jos Buttler is banking on the inputs given by players in the side who have sufficient experience of playing previously at the venue.

The picturesque Adelaide Oval is the only venue where England has not played a match in this tournament. From the current squad, leg-spinner Adil Rashid, opener Alex Hales, fast-bowling all-rounder Chris Jordan and batter Phil Salt have had the experience of playing a large number of matches at the venue, thanks to their stints with Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League (BBL).

While Rashid, Hales, and Jordan played only one season for the Strikers, Salt has played over 30 matches at the Adelaide Oval while representing the Strikers in the BBL between 2019 and 2021. With Adelaide Oval having short square boundaries and longer ones down the ground, it represents a different challenge for England.

“Tactically it may be a bit different. The dimensions and the surface we play on obviously have a big impact on the way you bat and bowl on those surfaces, so we’ve done some good things. We have guys who have played at Adelaide before, and we go into the game with some good ideas, and we react well on our feet when we have to.

“Having talked to the groundsman, his team is really confident that he’s had a lot of time to get some really good work into the wicket. He seems very comfortable that it’s going to be a really good surface and a consistent surface,” said Buttler in the pre-match press conference.

With the match being played on a used pitch, Buttler remarked he was aiming for a winning score on the ground which has a reputation for a good batting show. “At the moment I have no worries about the pitch. I think from all the information I’ve got at the minute, it looks like the wicket should be consistent for 40 overs. It looks quite like the Adelaide Oval to me.

“If we set first, we want to post a score that can’t be chased, and obviously we’ll be confident to chase anything down batting second. Historically I think if you look at the stats, it shows about 165 is around the par score here, but I’m not really interested in a par score, I’m interested in a winning score tomorrow.”

With their return to the Adelaide Oval for a knock-out match in a World Cup, it evokes unpleasant memories for England. In 2015, Bangladesh had sent them crashing out of the ODI World Cup, which would turn out to be the catalyst for their transformation in white-ball cricket, resulting in the 2019 50-over title as well as 2016 T20 World Cup runners-up finish and making the semifinals of 2021 and ongoing edition.

“We were actually just talking about that in the dressing room, a few of us were. Anytime you go back to certain grounds there are some moments or memories that were, and not always good ones, unfortunately. But it’s been clear to see the change in sort of mindset in English cricket towards the white ball game since that game went that way and especially the way we’ve played. The way we’ve played has given us better results, so that gives us a lot of trust in that process that it works.

“I think even going back to the Pakistan tour, some younger guys coming into the group, there seems an ingrained way of playing now in English cricket. It’s been a fantastic journey to be involved in. Going back to that point, it was a real line in the sand, I would say. That moment in English white ball cricket, and to be now into a semifinal and going to tournaments with a level of expectation that we should perform well is a great place to be as a team,” elaborated Buttler.

Instagram to introduce ‘Schedule Posts’ and new web design

0

Meta-owned Instagram has announced that it will roll out a new ‘Schedule Posts’ feature and a new website design for a better user experience.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, made the announcement on his Twitter account by posting a video, explaining the new feature and update.

‘Schedule Posts’ will allow the creators to schedule their posts for the next 75 days.

The new feature will soon be available to the creators.

The second announcement Mosseri made was the redesigned website.

“We know a lot of people use the web to multitask and we wanted to make sure Instagram was as great an experience as possible online,” said Mosseri.

“So it is cleaner, faster, easier to use and it is designed now to take advantage of large screen monitors,” he added.

Earlier, the social media platform had rolled out new features to protect users from abuse, along with updates to Hidden Words.

If you block someone, you have the option to block additional accounts they might have to make it more difficult for them to connect with you again, the company said.

‘Hidden Words’ is an effective tool to automatically remove damaging content from message requests and comments.

T20 World Cup: Huge challenge to adjust to length, shot making at Adelaide Oval, says Rohit Sharma

0

The dimensions at the picturesque Adelaide Oval are different as compared to other grounds in Australia. Depending on which used pitch will be picked for Thursday’s semifinal between India and England at the T20 World Cup, the square boundaries are around 57-67 meters, while the straight boundaries are longer, in between 79-88 meters.

In this situation, India has a slight edge over England, having played their tense five-run win over Bangladesh via the DLS method at this venue last week. England, on the other hand, will be playing at the Adelaide Oval for the first time in the competition.

India skipper Rohit Sharma noted that the change in dimensions ahead of the semifinals required a shift in mindset for batters as well as bowlers at Adelaide Oval while believing the advantage of having played here earlier would help them on Thursday.

“That’s one of the challenges that we have had in this tournament. Usually when you play — for example, last year in Dubai, the dimension of the ground didn’t change too much. We know there was one side bigger, but other than that, not too many things changed.

“But when we play here in Australia, obviously some of the grounds have longer, straighter boundaries, some of the grounds have smaller on the sides. So you’ve got to adjust to it as quickly as possible.

“Guys have not been here before. For them, it’s a huge challenge to adjust to that length and the shot-making, as well. I think we adapted to that pretty nicely. We were put under pressure in some of the games, but I thought we responded to that pressure really well,” said the right-handed opener in the pre-match press conference.

With Adelaide having a reputation for being a high-scoring ground, Rohit admitted that the short boundaries have been the center of talk amongst the Indian think-tank. “Adelaide is one ground where again, you have to go back and understand what sort of tactics you want to use here because the last game we played in Melbourne, was completely different. Now, in Adelaide, the side boundaries are a little shorter.

“Of course, we’ve had a lot of talk about it in our group, about what we want to do before we actually played that game against Bangladesh because since then we’ve been playing on the grounds which had longer side boundaries, so you could bowl your slower balls into the pitch.

“The bouncers and the batsmen needed to adjust to that, as well, but when we came to Adelaide it was a completely different scenario, and we do understand that having played a game here, we do understand what we need to come up with when it comes to planning and tactics.”

In the tournament, Rohit has scored just 89 runs in five matches and was out in the powerplay four times, barring a scratchy 53 against the Netherlands at SCG. He explained how changes in the nature of pitch and variations in boundary dimensions have made it difficult for his batters to play instinctive shots.

“A lot of the players in our squad are quite instinctive players. They like to see the ball and react to it, and if you see from the top order until No. 7, No. 8, we’ve seen different kinds of performances from them, as well. That’s only because a lot of the players are instinctive, and also some of the players like to play according to the situation, as well.

“I remember talking about coming out and playing fearlessly for a number of months now, but certainly in this tournament it has not happened quite well for us because looking at how the conditions are here, you just don’t want to come out and swing your bat; you want to understand the conditions. The ball is swinging a little more than what we have experienced in the last year.”

That deviation, coupled with fast bowlers calling the shots in favorable conditions for them, has meant that India hasn’t been able to take out their ultra-attacking approach with the bat, which requires them to attack the bowlers from word go.

“So you’ve got to respect that condition. It’s not just us; you can see the number from the entire tournament of the powerplay overs from all teams. It’s not been that great from all the teams. It’s only because of the conditions that have to offer, and I thought that is where our adaptability came into the picture, and guys adapted quite well, understood the situation, and played accordingly, which is a good sign.

“That is what a good team can do, adapt quickly, assess the conditions really quick because it’s not — we don’t have too much time here. All of that I think we did that pretty well. It’s just about now understanding and going out and executing the same plans.”

Rashmika Mandana opens up about receiving negativity and hatred

Actress Rashmika Mandana has been witnessing a steady upward graph in her career but with great adulation also comes a lot of negativity and trolling. The actress recently opened up about being at the receiving end of hatred and trolling, in her recent social media post.

Taking to her Instagram, the ‘Pushpa: The Rise’ actress shared a picture of herself wearing a face mask while she sits in a boat surrounded by serene waters.

She shared a long note in the caption opening up about her state of mind and how negativity affects her.

She started off her note by writing, “Hi so. A couple of things have been troubling me these last few days or weeks or months or maybe even years now, and I think it’s time I address it. I am only speaking for myself – something I should have done years ago. I have been on the receiving end of a lot of hate ever since I started my career. Quite literally a punching bag for a lot of trolls and negativity out there (sic)”.

She further mentioned that she is aware that an actor’s life comes with a lot of appreciation and unwarranted hatred, “I know that the life I’ve chosen comes with a price- I understand that I’m not everyone’s cup of tea and certainly don’t expect to be loved by every single person out there. That doesn’t mean because you don’t approve of me you can spew negativity instead. Only I know the kind of work I put in, day in and day out to make you all happy. The happiness you feel from the work I put out is what I care about most. I really am trying the best I can to put out things that both you and I are proud of.”

She continued, “It’s heartbreaking and frankly quite demoralizing when I’m being ridiculed and mocked by the internet, especially for things that I Have Not Said. I’ve found that bits of things I’ve said in interviews are being turned against me. False narratives being spread across the internet can be very harmful to me and the relationships I have in or outside the industry.”

“I welcome constructive criticism because that’s only going to push me to improve and do better. But what’s with the vile negativity and hate? For the longest time, I’ve been told to ignore it. But it has only gotten worse. By addressing it, I’m not trying to win anyone over. I don’t want to feel closeted and forced to change as a human being because of this hate I keep receiving”, she added.

Rashmika concluded her note by acknowledging the love that she receives from different quarters, “That being said, I do recognize and acknowledge all the love I’ve been receiving from the rest of you. Your constant love and support are what have kept me going and given me the courage to come out and say this. I only have a love for everyone around me, the people I’ve worked with so far, all of whom I’ve always admired. I will continue to work hard and do better for you. Because like I said, making you happy -makes me happy. Be kind everyone. We’re all trying to do our best.”

After she posted the note, she received a lot of support from the members of the fraternity in the comments section.

Dulquer Salmaan, with whom Rashmika has worked in ‘Sita Ramam’, wrote in the comment section, “The love is from those who want to be like you. Hate is from those who never can. You be you ! You is amazing”.

Actress Elli AvrRam too dropped an adorable comment, “Big kuchipuchiii hug to you.”

T20 World Cup: Pant, Karthik are in play for the semifinals, says Rohit Sharma

0

Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik is yet to play an impactful knock and provide India with the required finishing touches in the ongoing Men’s T20 World Cup. With all his scores in the tournament till now in single digits, India tried Rishabh Pant in their final Group 2 match against Zimbabwe.

Though Pant failed to make a substantial contribution with the bat, making just three runs against Zimbabwe in Melbourne, questions have arisen over Karthik coming back in the side for the semifinal against England at Adelaide Oval on Thursday.

On the eve of the semifinal, India skipper Rohit Sharma didn’t reveal who would be the keeper-batter in the eleven but said that both Pant and Karthik are in play for the crucial match.

“Between DK and Pant, I had said before the last game as well, Rishabh was the only guy who did not get to play on this tour at all, except the two games we played at Perth (against Western Australia XI). They were unofficial practice games, but since then he hasn’t had a hit.

“He was the only guy who was missing some game-time, so we wanted to give him some time and have some options as well if we want to make changes in the semifinal or final, which we should be able to do that,” said Rohit in the pre-match press conference.

“It will be unfair to just bring a guy out of nowhere and make him play the game, so that was the thought. But again, we have told the guys right from the beginning that everyone needs to be ready for whichever game that they have to play, whether it is the semis, finals, or league games,” added the right-handed opener.

With a school of thought opening that Pant could be effective against England’s off-spin and leg-spin duo of Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid in Adelaide, where the square boundaries are short, Rohit admitted that those thoughts had prompted the side to give the left-hander game time against Zimbabwe.

“It was a little tactical as well considering we were not knowing which team we would be playing in the semifinals before that Zimbabwe game. We wanted to just give the left-hander (Pant) an opportunity to counter some of those spinners who bowl in the middle for New Zealand and England.

“That was the thought, and we thought Rishabh was the guy for us to go and give him some time as well. But again, what is going to happen tomorrow, I cannot tell right now, but both of those keepers will be in play for sure.”

Rohit further expressed confidence over Axar Patel coming good for India ahead of the semifinal, citing that the left-arm spin all-rounder is in a good frame of mind. Against the Netherlands, Patel bowled a brilliant spell to take 2/18 in his four overs. But against other teams in the tournament, it has been no wickets for him while conceding 63 runs in five overs.

“To be honest, not really worried, as such, because he hardly got to bowl in this tournament. Except for that game against the Netherlands, he’s not bowled full overs of his quota, only because of the condition that has to offer. We’ve got four seamers who have particularly bowled all of their quotas, which means the spinners will not bowl their overs.

“If you look at the conditions, except Sydney, all the grounds we’ve played had a lot to offer to the seamers, which means we never got an opportunity to bowl Axar in the powerplay, which is his specialty, and honestly have not looked too much into his bowling and gotten worried about his performance because we do understand his quality and the series that we played before coming here bowled exceptionally well.

“Guys can have one bad tournament; it doesn’t mean that he’s out of form or not bowling well or not able to execute plans. I thought the kind of space he’s in for me that is important, and when I talked to him when and hear his thoughts, I pretty much feel that he was in a good space, and that is exactly what we want when you’re about to play a game like that,” concluded Rohit.

On the eve of their semifinal clash against England in the Men’s T20 World Cup, India skipper Rohit Sharma insisted that it is important for his side to not think too much about what would happen in the future and stick to the processes which propelled them to get to the knockouts.

India entered the semifinals as the toppers from Group 2 in Super 12s and will be meeting England in a knockout match of the T20 World Cups for the first time at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday.

“It’s important to not get ahead of ourselves and we do understand as well that we have to play good cricket to win that game, which we have done in this tournament. We just need to stick to it,” said Rohit in the pre-match press conference.

Though Rohit acknowledged that India is two steps away from ending a nine-year wait for a World Cup trophy, he added that his side will stick to what has worked for them in the tournament till now. “It’s an opportunity for us to come and do that (get the silverware). But we do understand it’s been a long process for us and we will stick to our process.

“I know we are (a) a long way away from it (winning the trophy). But I think it’s important to understand that it’s a contest between bat and ball, which we have to come out on top with and trust what you have been doing so far.”

G20 Presidency is a measure of trust in India: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday unveiled the logo, theme, and website of India’s G20 Presidency via video-conferencing, saying that it reflects the country’s “message and overarching priorities” to the world.

India will assume the G20 Presidency on December 1 from the current President of Indonesia.

“India is set to assume G20 Presidency. It is a moment of pride for 130 crore Indians. The notion of universal brotherhood is being reflected via the G20 logo. The lotus in the logo of G20 is a symbol of hope in these tough times,” the Prime Minister said.

“G20 Presidency is not merely a diplomatic meeting for India, it is a new responsibility and a measure of the world’s trust in India.

“Environment is a global cause for us as well as personal responsibility. It will be our effort that there should be no first world or third world, but only one world. Our G20 mantra is – One Earth, One Family, One Future,” Modi said.

“G20 will not be limited to Delhi or a few places. Every citizen, state government, and political party should participate in it,” he emphasized.
