Minister chairs first joint society meeting of autonomous institutes under MoES

Minister of State for Earth Sciences, Jitendra Singh, on Tuesday, convened the first-ever joint society meeting of autonomous institutes (IITM, INCOIS, NCESS, NCPOR, NIOT) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) and called for breaking the “silos” to work with integration and “whole of government” approach.

All the five autonomous bodies, including the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), the National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS), the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) and National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), have been merged into a single society of MoES.

Singh said the move is in tune with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s directive to avoid duplication and working in silos and to aim for greater integration to achieve maximum output.

He said Prime Minister Modi not only has a natural predilection for science but is also forthcoming in supporting and promoting science and technology-based initiatives and projects in the last 7-8 years.

Singh said that the Ministry of Earth Sciences has taken the notion of ‘marine surveillance’ to a new level, where space applications are also being deployed to share valuable inputs with the security agencies.

The minister also informed that Oceansat will be launched on November 26, and installation of a NASA-ISRO radar system is at an advanced stage.

Their defense unit is also good and the team has been performing well in the tournament.”

U Mumba Captain Surinder Singh also shared thoughts about his team’s next encounter, “We have played a match with Pune before in the tournament. It was a close match and we lost by two points in the end. We have a fair idea about how the team plays. Our coach will make a plan for us and we will look to execute it on the mat. The Pune side will have great support from the fans in the stadium, but we will also have our fans in the stadium as we are a team from Maharashtra.”

1 in 6 people in England, Wales born abroad, mostly India: Census

0

India was found to be the most common country of birth for one in six, or nearly 10 million, people in England and Wales, according to a report released by the UK’s Office for National Statistics.

The report, “International Migration, England and Wales: Census 2021”, said that 16.8 per cent of residents were born abroad, up from 13.4 per cent a decade earlier.

The number of foreign-born residents increased by 2.5 million over the decade to 10 million.

India was the most common country of origin, accounting for 920,000 people, which is 1.5 per cent of the usual resident population, the 2021 census showed.

The three most common non-UK countries of birth for usual residents in 2021 were India, followed by Poland, which increased to 743,000 (1.2 per cent), up from 579,000 in 2011; and Pakistan, which increased to 624,000 (1 per cent), up from 482,000 in 2011.

The report comes at a time when the UK has been under duress over a record number of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats and arriving in Britain.

Migration led to a 6.3 per cent rise in the population between 2011 and 2021, the report said.

The figures also showed that 5.9 million people, or 9.9 per cent of the population, held a non-UK passport.

London continued to be the region with the largest proportion of people born outside the UK, rising from 36.7 per cent in 2011 to 40.6 per cent of the city’s population.

The figures for Wales and North East England were less than 7 per cent.

9 in 10 Indians believe hybrid job improves work-life balance

More than 9 in 10 (92 percent) Indian employees believe that a hybrid work environment improves work-life balance and over 7 in 10 (72 percent) say that the hybrid work model is more productive, a report showed on Tuesday.

About 88 percent said hybrid work is increasing employee retention. However, employees need better technological tools to thrive in the hybrid working model, according to a global study by PC and printer major HP.

Most employees are unwilling to go back to the office full-time as they are relishing the hybrid work model, which became a necessity in the last two years due to the pandemic.

“Organisations need to re-evaluate a hybrid workplace culture that offers flexibility and work-life balance while encouraging inclusivity, engagement, and a sense of well-being among employees. Most importantly, monitor employee satisfaction to boost productivity at large,” said Ketan Patel, Managing Director, HP India Market.

Employers too have something to cheer about as Indian employees indicate a higher probability of staying in their current job if given a hybrid work option.

“The hybrid model is seen to amplify employees’ chance to prioritize personal well-being. Most of the respondents prefer working from the office for two-three days a week,” the findings showed.

About 51 percent of respondents said that laptops help them carry out tasks more productively and 43 percent agreed that they have a more enhanced collaborative process through laptops.

According to the report, firms must provide access to better tools while conducting adequate training, to further boost productivity.

“Additionally, promoting a culture of trust within the workplace leads to inclusivity in a hybrid work environment,” it added.

In India, 30 percent of the respondents said that internet connection is one of the major disruptions.

Brazil name Dani Alves in 26-member World Cup squad

0

Brazil manager Tite has named 39-year-old defender Dani Alves in his squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the South American country’s football confederation said on Monday.

The 26-man list also includes Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar, Real Madrid attackers Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, and veteran Chelsea center-back Thiago Silva.

But there was no place for Aston Villa midfielder Philippe Coutinho, who was left out after suffering a thigh injury while training last week. Also missing was Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino, despite his impressive start to the season for the Premier League club, Xinhua reports.

Tite called up 12 Premier League players, including Manchester United’s Casemiro, Antony, and Fred, and Arsenal duo Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli.

Alves’ inclusion comes despite having played just 12 games for Mexican club Pumas this season and the fact he is just six months shy of his 40th birthday.

“The criteria for Daniel Alves was the same as everyone else,” Tite told a news conference. “It rewards individual technical quality, physical fitness and mental (strength).”

Alves will be the oldest player to represent Brazil at the World Cup, eclipsing Djalma Santos, who was 37 when he formed part of the Selecao squad at the 1966 tournament in England.

Alves has been capped 119 times since his international debut in 2006. He went to the 2010 and 2014 World Cups but missed the 2018 tournament in Russia because of a knee injury.

The right-back has been training with his former club Barcelona since the end of the Liga MX regular season in early October.

Brazil has been drawn in the same group as Serbia, Switzerland, and Cameroon for the World Cup, to be played from November 20 to December 18.

Brazil squad:

Goalkeepers: Alisson (Liverpool), Ederson (Manchester City), Weverton (Palmeiras).

Defenders:

Bremer (Juventus), Eder Militao (Real Madrid) Marquinhos (PSG), Thiago Silva (Chelsea), Danilo (Juventus), Dani Alves (Pumas), Alex Sandro (Juventus), Alex Telles (Sevilla).

Midfielders:

Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle), Casemiro (Manchester United), Everton Ribeiro (Flamengo), Fabinho (Liverpool), Fred (Manchester United), Lucas Paqueta (West Ham)

Forwards:

Antony (Manchester United), Gabriel Jesus (Arsenal), Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal), Neymar (PSG), Pedro (Flamengo), Rafinha (Barcelona), Richarlison (Tottenham), Rodrygo (Real Madrid), Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid).

T20 World Cup: Irrespective of patchy form, Babar-Rizwan pair to open for Pakistan in semifinal, says Hayden

0

Pakistan coach Matthew Hayden has asserted he will go with the same opening pair of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan in the ICC T20 World Cup semifinal against New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday, despite the duo not quite giving the side a promising start expected from them.

While Azam and Rizwan are Pakistan’s number one opening pair, their below-par showing here has prompted experts to ask the team management to push the captain down the batting order, but Hayden said their experience of soaking up the pressure in big-match situations makes them the ideal candidates to open the innings.

“Babar and Rizwan rightly are a number one combination. If I can take your minds way back to a different World Cup, that was the 2007 World Cup and Adam Gilchrist had a lean World Cup healed of that undefeated campaign for Australia,” said Hayden.

“If you remember that last match against Sri Lanka, he went on to score an incredible hundred and realized his potential in that tournament and awakened the world once again to the fact that he was such a premium batsman in that format of the game.

“It’s always nice to have two players that have felt the pressure, and we all feel the pressure at any given time in our career. No different for the number one combination, no different for the number four ranked T20 player in Babar,” added Hayden.

Expressing his confidence in the batting abilities of the two top-order batters, Hayden, himself a legendary Australian opener, said “special players don’t often stay down for long”. “And don’t be surprised whatsoever if you don’t see some fireworks because very special players,” he said.

Describing his team’s roller-coaster journey into the semifinals, Hayden said it was an incredible experience, adding South Africa’s shock loss to the Netherlands just before Pakistan’s game against Bangladesh gave his side an “uplifting tempo”.

“Shadab (Khan) actually said something very significant in the dugout the other day when we were playing our last match (against Bangladesh), and he said, ‘Welcome to Pakistan cricket. Meaning that on any given day, anything can happen. And on that particular day, when the Netherlands beat South Africa, it was a significant moment for us in the tournament and a very, very significant moment for the team in general around the potential in reaching that potential.

“Lots of prayers as Pakistan woke up to see that result (the Netherlands beating South Africa). 232 million people can’t be wrong. And as a result of that, I feel that there was very much an uplifting tempo in our group, which made that match against Bangladesh almost a certainty for Pakistan.

“Incredible experience, as you say rightly, it’s been a roller coaster ride, but a ride that I wouldn’t have it any other way because the last World Cup that we went into was undefeated and Australia pipped us in the semifinal. So, really significant for Pakistan,” he added.

Twitter tells advertisers its user growth at all-time high under Musk

0

Twitter has told advertisers that its daily user growth has hit an “all-time high” after Elon Musk’s takeover last week, as several advertisers leave the platform amid internal chaos.

According to a company document obtained by The Verge, Twitter’s monetizable daily user (mDAU) growth has accelerated to more than 20 percent after Musk’s takeover.

“Twitter’s largest market, the US, is growing even more quickly,” according to the document.

As per the report, Twitter has added more than 15 million mDAUs, “crossing the quarter billion mark”.

Twitter last reported 237.8 million mDAUs and a 16.6 percent annual growth for its second quarter.

The Twitter FAQ for advertisers said that “levels of hate speech remain within historical norms, representing 0.25 percent to 0.45 percent of tweets per day among hundreds of millions.”

Meanwhile, the Volkswagen Group joined several other companies in pausing their spending on Twitter, out of concerns that their ads could appear alongside problematic content.

Danish brewing company Carlsberg Group also said it had advised its marketing teams to do the same, according to reports. United Airlines has also suspended advertising on Twitter.

Musk said last week that Twitter has seen a massive drop in revenue as activist groups were putting undue pressure on its advertisers.

In a tweet, the new Twitter CEO said these activist groups are destroying free speech.

“Twitter has had a massive drop in revenue, due to activist groups pressuring advertisers, even though nothing has changed with content moderation and we did everything we could to appease the activists,” Musk said in a tweet.

“Extremely messed up! They’re trying to destroy free speech in America,” he added.

The company lost $270 million in the April-June period after revenue slipped 1 percent to $1.18 billion, reflecting advertising industry headwinds.

Advertising revenue was $1.08 billion while subscription and other revenue totaled $101 million, a decrease of 27 percent year-over-year.

US seizes over 50K Bitcoin worth $3.3 bn stored in popcorn tin

0

The US authorities have seized around 50,676 Bitcoin worth $3.36 billion stored in a circuit board hidden in the bottom of a popcorn tin in a bathroom closet.

The 32-year-old James Zhong from Georgia fraudulently obtained the Bitcoin from The Silk Road — a site on the dark web once called “the Amazon of drugs” — in 2012.

Zhong has now pleaded guilty to committing wire fraud in September 2012, when he unlawfully obtained over 50,000 Bitcoin from the Silk Road dark web internet marketplace, the US Department of Justice said in a statement late on Monday.

“Zhong committed wire fraud over a decade ago when he stole approximately 50,000 Bitcoin from the Silk Road. For almost 10 years, the whereabouts of this massive chunk of missing Bitcoin had ballooned into an over $3.3 billion mystery,” said US Attorney Damian Williams.

Thanks to state-of-the-art cryptocurrency tracing and good old-fashioned police work, law enforcement located and recovered this impressive cache of crime proceeds.

“This case shows that we won’t stop following the money, no matter how expertly hidden, even to a circuit board in the bottom of a popcorn tin,” he said.

In operation from approximately 2011 until 2013, Silk Road was used by numerous drug dealers and other unlawful vendors to distribute massive quantities of illegal drugs and other illicit goods and services to many buyers and to launder all funds passing through it.

In 2015, following a groundbreaking prosecution by the US authorities, Silk Road’s founder Ross Ulbricht was convicted by a unanimous jury and sentenced to life in prison.

Zhong funded the fraud accounts with an initial deposit of between 200 and 2,000 Bitcoin. After the initial deposit, he then quickly executed a series of withdrawals.

Through his scheme to defraud, he was able to withdraw many times more Bitcoin out of the Silk Road than he had deposited in the first instance.

He now faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

‘Women in Sport’ initiative launched to promote endurance sports in India

0

In an endeavor to encourage more women to take up the endurance challenge at this year’s Ironman 70.3 Goa, the race organizers have launched a ‘Women in Sport’ and also opened up free relay slots for women above 19 years to enroll and partake.

With Ironman 70.3 Goa involving an arduous race requiring the participants to complete 1.9km swimming, 90 km cycling, and 21.2km running, the race organizers, Yoska has launched the ‘Women in Sport’ initiative with support from Brigade Foundation.

The ‘Women in Sport’ initiative has received an overwhelming response from women from all over the country.

Yoska has meticulously scouted, assessed, and grouped them into teams based on their respective proficiencies and formed 12 all-women relay teams comprising 36 women. Yoska has also championed the cause by training these women participants through their digital platform and mobile app, which provides customized training for endurance activities like triathlon, distance running, swimming, and cycling among general fitness programs.

While there are several women taking part in the individual race, opening up relay slots made way for more women to consider the challenge.

Deepak Raj, a leading Ironman triathlete from India who is also the founder of Yoska, explained, “At Yoska we are always looking to encourage female athletes and women to get into the sport. To promote inclusion, empower women, and ensure greater participation of women athletes for the second edition of the Ironman 70.3 Goa race, we decided to launch and provide free registrations.

“Our team has worked tirelessly to scan through and seek interest from swimmers, cyclists, and runners from across India and then create the all-women relay teams. Each team has women from different age groups and different walks of life coming together and meeting for the first time on race week to take up the challenge. As we continue to grow this event, it is our goal to inspire and motivate female participation to a greater extent, and in time have one of the best ratios of women participation globally,” he was quoted as saying in a release.

Yoska’s ‘Women in Sport’ initiative is being spearheaded by Aarathi Swaminathan, who is one of Yoska’s Ironman-certified women coaches leading the Women in Tri initiative with mentoring, and organizing webinars for the women endurance community across India. Aarathi is also one of the top Ironman triathletes in the country who also added, “The initiative is to give more women an opportunity to explore, experience and excel.”

Joining Yoska’s initiative, Brigade Foundation has helped support up to 30 women forming 10 relay teams. “Brigade has been a staunch supporter of sport through multiple avenues, but especially women in sport. By encouraging women in sport, we are also enhancing their quality of life, in terms of giving them an opportunity to pursue their dreams and achieve great heights,” said Nirupa Shankar, Trustee of the Brigade Foundation and an avid triathlete herself.

On November 13, over 1400 participants from across India and 33 countries will take to the starting line at Miramar Beach in Panaji. Among them, these 20 relay teams comprising all women will be vying to make a mark of their own.

Hot Seat Woes: Big B left puzzled by Neena Gupta’s question on ‘KBC 14’

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan will be seen taking over the hot seat and answering questions by well-known actress Neena Gupta in the upcoming episode of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 14’, with whom he has worked in the upcoming movie ‘Uunchai’, and ‘Goodbye’, which released a few weeks ago.

The recently released promo of the television show has Big B taking over the hot seat along with his ‘Uunchai’ co-actors Anupam Kher and Boman Irani.

Neena, as the show host, asks some interesting questions to them. While playing the game, she asks Big B: “If you get a chance to change something in your life. What will it be?”

The ‘Deewaar’ actor looks puzzled and lost in some thoughts while Anupam and Boman also wonder what will be his answer.

Moreover, Big B also recites a beautiful poem on childhood friendship and its importance. His poetry conveys the message that nothing can be more precious than friendship in life. And only friends can help in creating the most memorable memories during school days.

He says: “Mujhe bachpan mein hi in sawaalon ka jawaab mil gaya, kuch doston ke roop mein puraskar mil gaya” (I got the answers to these questions in my childhood only, and received a gift in the form of my friends).

Boman also replies to him with a poem which says that despite all the stress of job and career, a true friend is always there to support and give strength.

“Fir aaya daur jawaani ka, socha ab khul ke jeeyenge, jawaani ke josh mein ghul ke jeeyenge…..tab dost ne kaha tension mat le tera bhai hai na (Then came the era of youth, thought now we will live freely, dissolve in the enthusiasm of youth, then a friend said, don’t stress, your brother is here)”.

The promo ends with Anupam’s poetry and Neena joining them.

‘KBC 14’ airs on Sony Entertainment Television.

Ukraine conflict impact: Asia-Pacific airlines’ cargo volumes dip 10.7% in Sep

0

Asia-Pacific region airlines saw their air cargo volumes decrease by 10.7 percent in September 2022, compared to the same month in 2021.

The latest data by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) showed that airlines in the region continue to be impacted by the conflict in Ukraine, labor shortages, and lower levels of trade and manufacturing activity due to Omicron-related restrictions in China. It said that available capacity in the region increased by 2.8 percent compared to 2021.

The IATA data for September 2022 global air cargo markets showed that air cargo demand softened. It said that global demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometers (CTKs), fell 10.6 percent compared to September 2021.

IATA said that following contractions across major economies, the global Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for new export orders also contracted (for the third month in a row) to its lowest level in two years.

The latest global goods trade figures showed a 5.2 percent expansion in August, a positive sign for the global economy. This is expected to primarily benefit maritime cargo, with a slight boost to air cargo as well, it said.

IATA said that oil prices remained stable in September and the jet fuel crack spread fell from a peak in June. The Consumer Price Index stabilized in G7 countries in September, but at a decade high of 7.7 percent. Inflation in producer (input) prices slowed to 13.7 percent in August.

“While air cargo’s activity continues to track near to 2019 levels, volumes remain below 2021’s exceptional performance as the industry faces some headwinds. At the consumer level, with travel restrictions lifting post-pandemic, people are likely to spend more on vacation travel and less on e-commerce. And at the macro level, increasing recession warnings are likely to have a negative impact on the global flows of goods and services, balanced slightly by a stabilization of oil prices. Against this backdrop, air cargo is bearing up well. And a strategic slow-down in capacity growth from 6.3 percent in August to 2.4 percent in September demonstrates the flexibility the industry has in adjusting to economic developments,” IATA Director General Willie Walsh said.

The IATA represents 290 airlines comprising 83 per cent of global air traffic.

WTA Finals: Sabalenka topples Swiatek to meet Garcia in title clash

0

The No.7 seed Aryna Sabalenka stunned World No.1 Iga Swiatek 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in their 2-hour and 7-minute semifinal here on Sunday.

Sabalenka prevailed in her tour-leading 28th three-set match of this season to reach her third final of the year.

At the start of the week, Sabalenka called it a “miracle” that she even qualified for the WTA Finals. But now, after a massive semifinal upset, her miracle has extended all the way into the singles final in Fort Worth.

Sabalenka will now meet No.6 seed, Caroline Garcia, for the WTA Finals singles trophy, which will break their currently deadlocked 2-2 head-to-head. With their semifinal wins, both Sabalenka and Garcia will finish the year inside the Top 5.

Former World No.2 Sabalenka won her first meeting with Swiatek a year ago at the 2021 WTA Finals, but since then, Swiatek had the upper hand in their rivalry, winning their four prior encounters this year.

However, Sabalenka came close to garnering another win in the US Open semifinals, leading Swiatek by a break in the third set before Swiatek turned that match around en route to the title.

After the win, Sabalenka said, “Overall, I was really calm on the court. The mindset was just I wanted to make her work for it. I didn’t want to give her another easy win like she got (in the) first three wins. That’s the mindset I had during this match. I think that’s why I wasn’t really going for all those winners, all those aces, but I think because of the mindset, I made it a lot.”

Swiatek’s incredible year comes to a close with a 67-9 win-loss record, and eight singles titles. But her 15-match winning streak against her fellow Top 10 players ended with her loss to Sabalenka.

Both Swiatek and Maria Sakkari finished the round-robin portion of the event with 3-0 records, but neither made it to this week’s final. The last time a 3-0 round-robin player failed to make the final at the WTA Finals was 2015, where, just like this year, both undefeated players, Maria Sharapova and Garbie Muguruza, lost in the semifinals.
