UNSC elects judge to International Court of Justice

0

The UN Security Council (UNSC), meeting independently from, but concurrently with the General Assembly, elected Leonardo Nemer Caldeira Brant of Brazil to the International Court of Justice until February 5, 2027.

Brant will serve with immediate effect, filling the vacancy caused by the death of Judge Antonio Augusto Cancado Trindade of Brazil on May 29, reports Xinhua news agency.

Under the terms of the court’s statute, a candidate obtaining an absolute majority of votes in both the Security Council and General Assembly is considered elected.

In the Security Council, eight votes constitute an absolute majority, and no distinction is made between its permanent and non-permanent members.

By contrast, all 193 member states in the General Assembly are electors.

Accordingly, for the election, 97 votes constitute an absolute majority in the General Assembly.

The International Court of Justice, based in The Hague, is one of the principal organs of the US.

Also known as the World Court, it adjudicates legal disputes between states, and provides advisory opinions on legal questions submitted by other UN organs or agencies.

The court consists of 15 judges, with five judges elected every three years.

In the case of death or other vacancy, a judge is elected for the remainder of the term.

YouTube announces ‘Go Live Together’ co-streaming feature to eligible creators

0

Video streaming platform YouTube has announced a new feature called “Go Live Together” that will allow eligible creators to invite a guest to live stream with them.

“This feature is being expanded to a select group of creators. We hope to let more creators use Go Live Together soon,” said Youtube in a blogpost.

Creators will only be able to co-stream via a phone, as the feature won’t be available on YouTube’s desktop version.

Creators can use their computer to schedule a live stream with a guest and then go live from their phone. They can also immediately go live from their mobile device.

Also, creators can switch up the guests they have on their live stream, but they can only have one person there at once. After inviting a guest, their stream feed will appear above their guest’s, according to the report.

Moreover, the company mentioned that the host channel will be responsible for the live content and should ensure that all guests and content on that co-stream comply with all YouTube terms, including their community guidelines, copyright policy, and all other applicable policies.

Meanwhile, YouTube recently rolled out a new feature, ‘Primetime Channels’, that allows users to watch their favourite TV shows, movies and sports from the streaming services directly on the application.

The early version of ‘Primetime Channels’ has been rolled out in the US, said the company.

A decade after 172 deaths in Datia tragedy, no action taken by MP govt

0

Last week, over a century-old suspension bridge collapsed in Gujarat’s Morbi town, killing 135 people, sending shock waves across the country.

In a similar tragic incident in Madhya Pradesh’s Datiya district in October 2006, 57 people were washed away when Sindh river got suddenly flooded after officials opened the gates of the nearby Madikheda dam without giving prior information.

As per reports, thousands of people had gathered to pray at a temple in Datiya when all of a sudden Sindh river got flooded, resulting in the collapse of a bridge built on it. As per the state government record, at least 57 people were washed away in that incident.

In an even more horrific incident at the same place in October 2013, as many as 115 people, including children and women, lost their lives in a stampede. Coincidentally, both the incidents occurred in October. The tragic incident in Morbi also took place in the month of October.

Notably, 12 years have passed since the first incident was reported in Datiya in 2006, and nearly nine years have passed since the 2013 stampede, but no action has been taken in any of the two cases despite the fact that much claims were made after the tragedies happened.

Both the mishaps took place during BJP rule, and the government of the time had constituted inquiry commissions headed by retired high court judges to probe the incidents.

However, in both these cases, neither the report of the commission was made public, nor any official was punished in what the locals called ‘state sanctioned murders’.

Interestingly, even after the Congress came to power in Madhya Pradesh in 2018, none of the officials were held accountable for the two incidents.

Sources told media that the state government-appointed committee for the 2006 incident had submitted its report to the Assembly, but the probe panel’s report was rejected by the ruling BJP.

“The Shivraj Singh Chouhan government had appointed Justice Rakesh Saxena, a retired judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, to probe the circumstances that led to the stampede in 2013 and identify the erring officials. Nine years have passed since then but no further action has been taken in the matter,” said Ajay Dube, a social activist who has been raising these issues for years.

Sources privy to the development told Media that the probe panel led by Justice Saxena had submitted its findings to the state government sometime in March-April 2014. However, neither it was made public, nor presented in the state Assembly.

Dube said that he had filed an RTI query for the copy of the said report, but he failed to get the report due to the “sustained pressure” of the state government, which succeeded in holding it back.

Dubey said that had the state government taken timely action, the 2013 stampede could have been avoided.

“The task of such commissions is to identify and suggest what went wrong and what steps should be taken to avoid such incidents in the future. Had the erring officials been brought to book, they would have been more careful in 2013. However, now these are forgotten tragedies,” Dubey rued.

Unfortunately, there is no choice: Musk on Twitter layoffs

0

Elon Musk on Saturday said that there is no choice other than brutally firing half of Twitter’s workforce as the company is losing over $4 million a day.

After axing nearly 3,800 employees across the globe, including in India, the new Twitter CEO said that he has given three months of severance to everyone who has been asked to go.

“Regarding Twitter’s reduction in force, unfortunately there is no choice when the company is losing over $4M/day,” Musk tweeted.

“Everyone exited was offered 3 months of severance, which is 50 per cent more than legally required,” he added.

Musk has laid off people across the departments at Twitter, eliminating several teams across the globe.

He also said that Twitter has seen a massive drop in revenue as activist groups are putting undue pressure on its advertisers.

“Again, to be crystal clear, Twitter’s strong commitment to content moderation remains absolutely unchanged. In fact, we have actually seen hateful speech at times this week decline below our prior norms, contrary to what you may read in the press,” he posted.

“Twitter will not censor accurate information about anything,” said Musk.

On charging $8 for the Blue subscription service, he said: “Trash me all day, but it’ll cost $8.”

The company lost $270 million in the April-June period after revenue slipped 1 per cent to $1.18 billion, reflecting advertising industry headwinds.

0

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Chairperson Dr P.D. Vaghela on Friday said that introduction of 5G technology will enable India to achieve the digital empowerment goal and improve the well-being of the people.

“5G technology would offer significant improvements in network performance and is likely to transform industries and society, putting the country on an unprecedented growth trajectory. 5G would have a massive impact on various industries and on the overall economy,” he said at a workshop here.

Vaghela also said that India is the second largest telecom market in the world now with 117 crore telecom subscribers and 825 million broadband subscribers.

He said that India has considered technology as a key element for two things, one for rapid economic growth and the second for social and digital inclusion. According to him, the Digital India programme has helped a lot in expanding the use of technology and the Digital India profile has seen a huge change in various sectors.

The TRAI chief also highlighted how the stakeholders can cooperate for expediting infrastructure rollout for 5G deployment considering the issues and challenges in the northeastern states. He said that the main focus of the government is to provide internet and digital access to everyone, including underserved people, to ensure that every section of society gets connectivity at any cost.

Emphasising the need for digital literacy and digital infrastructure, he said that the development of digital infrastructure and connectivity to every household is a must and this is the only way a common citizen becomes able to explore the opportunities available in an economy.

President Murmu stresses on conserving Himalaya’s fragile ecology

0

President Droupadi Murmu on Friday said the Himalayas, its fragile ecology and flora and fauna are “our priceless heritage and we must conserve them for generations to come”.

She said Mizoram has the highest forest cover among all Indian states, providing an ideal home for extraordinary and rich biodiversity.

Addressing the Mizoram Assembly, the President said that India’s ties with the neighbours, especially in South-East Asia, are of high value to us. “India’s ‘Act East Policy’ places emphasis on the northeast for improving India’s ties with the extended neighbourhood in the Asia-Pacific region. Once an economic initiative, the policy has now gained strategic and cultural dimensions too.

“Mizoram benefits from, and also contributes to, the nation’s endeavour to engage with the neighbours in the region,” Murmu said.

Noting that the topography of the hilly region poses special challenges for development; the President said that yet Mizoram has done remarkably well on all parameters, especially when it comes to human development.

She said that connectivity is bound to be the biggest factor in realising the potential of such a region.

The development of village roads, highways and bridges not only helps in meeting the education and healthcare goals, but also unleashes economic opportunities.

Expressing her happiness, Murmu said that the Mizoram Assembly has played a pioneer role in going digital by adopting NeVA (National e-Vidhan Application).

She said that in Mizoram, women are an empowered lot in every sphere of life, be it sports, culture or business.

“There should be increased representation of women in public life particularly, among lawmakers in the state.”

After a two-day visit to Nagaland, the President came to Mizoram on Thursday and after attending a series of programmes, including addressing the 17th Convocation of the Mizoram University and the Mizoram assembly, on Friday she went to Sikkim capital Gangtok, where she would attend several events.

Twitter faces class-action lawsuit over mass layoffs without notice

0

Elon Musk-run Twitter has been sued in the US for mass lay offs without giving employees advanced written notice, the media reported on Friday.

The lawsuit has been filed in the US District Court in the Northern District of California, in violation of worker protection laws including the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act as well as the California WARN Act, both of which require 60 days of advance notice, reports TechCrunch.

The plaintiffs said they were “terminated on November 3 by being locked out of their accounts”.

“Twitter is also enacting widespread layoffs across its workforce today, on Nov. 4, 2022, it stated, adding that California’s Employment Development Department had not received a notice related to the event,” they said.

The plaintiffs asked the court to declare that Twitter has violated the federal and California WARN Acts and “certify the case as a class action suit”.

The lawsuit is seeking “a range of relief, including compensatory damages (including wages owed), as well as declaratory relief, pre- and post-judgment interest, plus other attorneys’ fees and costs”.

Under Twitter’s takeover deal terms, the laid-off employees should receive 60 days of salary and the cash value of the stock.

Musk has previously laid off employees without any proper notice at Tesla, and is facing a class-action lawsuit.

Spanish airports closed airspace because of out-of-control Chinese rocket falling back to Earth

0

Several Spanish airports closed their airspace earlier on Friday morning because of an out-of-control Chinese rocket, the media reported.

Flights into and out of Barcelona, Tarragona, Ibiza and Reus were known to have been grounded with reports other regions including La Rioja and Castilla and Leon have been affected, the Daily Mail reported.

The measure lasted around 40 minutes, although local reports were pointing to the possibility places such as Ibiza could still face delays of several hours, Daily Mail reported.

Local media in the Balearics said flights between the islands and the UK would be the most affected by the problems caused by the out-of-control Chinese space junk.

It came after China launched the third and final piece of its new Tiangong space station on Monday — and warnings had been sounded about the rocket’s 23-tonne body coming back down on the Earth with Spain identified as one of the countries in its path, Daily Mail reported.

The module, named Mengtain, blasted into space from the Wenchang Satellite Launch Centre on the southern island province of Hainan.

Mengtian, or ‘Celestial Dream’, joins Wentian as the second laboratory module for the station, collectively known as Tiangong, or ‘Celestial Palace’. Both are connected to the Tianhe core module where the crew lives and works.

As it tumbles back down, it will send large and heavy pieces of debris that will hit the surface of the Earth, Daily Mail reported.

Debris from the rocket, flying around the world at 17,500 miles per hour, is being tracked live by the EU Space Surveillance and Tracking.

T20 World Cup: Little’s hat-trick in vain as New Zealand beat Ireland by 35 runs; boost chances of topping Group 1

0

Ireland left-arm pacer Josh Little’s hat-trick went in vain as New Zealand took a big step towards qualifying for the semifinals of Men’s T20 World Cup with a 35-run win in their last Group 1 match in Super 12s at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson played exquisite shots all across the park to make a solid 61 off 35 balls, shrugging off his lean run to get his first fifty of the tournament, and help his side reach a challenging 185/6.

But Little stole the thunder of it by dismissing him, Jimmy Neesham and Mitchell Santner on the trot in the 19th over to record second hat-trick of the tournament as Ireland gave away only 12 runs in their last two overs.

The sensational hat-trick propelled Little to end with figures of 3/22 in his four overs. But Ireland could make only 150/9 in their 20 overs with the bat while chasing 186, as Santner, Ish Sodhi and Lockie Ferguson shined with the ball.

With the win, New Zealand are on seven points now, which means Australia and England can be level with them on points if they win their respective final matches. But the Blackcaps may be assured to be table-toppers of Group 1 with net run rate now at a healthy +2.11.

Pushed into batting first, New Zealand’s aggressive opening duo of Finn Allen and Devon Conway were kept in check for the initial stages of powerplay. Allen finally cut loose against Gareth Delany by taking three fours in the fourth over. He then took on Mark Adair with a four and a six. But the pacer had the last laugh in the final over of the powerplay, as Allen hit straight to mid-off.

In the 12th over, Conway holed out to long-on off Delany. But New Zealand were quick in rebuilding their innings with Williamson and Glenn Phillips hitting delightful boundaries. Though Phillips fell after a quick nine-ball 17, Williamson batted on for the bulk of the innings.

He seemed to have found his rhythm which had deserted him in the tournament, timing the ball as nicely as he did and picking runs through gaps at will. After getting his fifty with a magnificent flick going over deep mid-wicket fence off Barry McCarthy to reach his fifty, Williamson looked all set to get New Zealand past 200.

But Little’s hat-trick in the 19th over meant Ireland pulled back things very nicely to keep New Zealand to 185/6. Ireland needed a big start and their openers, captain Andrew Balbirnie and Paul Stirling, responded well to the call with some amazing boundaries. At 68 for no loss after eight overs, Ireland looked set to cause an upset.

But then spin did the trick for New Zealand through Santner’s left-arm spin and Ish Sodhi’s leg-spin. Having realised that pace off the ball was the key to make inroads in Adelaide, both Santner and Sodhi took three wickets between themselves from ninth, tenth and 11th overs to break the back of Ireland’s batting.

As the asking rate went up, Ireland continued to crumble under pressure. More wickets fell as Lockie Ferguson picked three while Tim Southee also got one in the end as Ireland eventually fell short by 35 runs.

Brief scores: New Zealand 185/6 in 20 overs (Kane Williamson 61, Finn Allen 32; Josh Little 3/22, Gareth Delany 2/30) beat Ireland 150/9 in 20 overs (Paul Stirling 37, Andrew Balbirnie 30; Lockie Ferguson 3/22, Mitchell Santner 2/26) by 35 runs.
