93.13% voter turnout in Munugode bypoll

0

A record 93.13 per cent polling was recorded in Thursday’s by-election to Munugode Assembly seat in Telangana.

The final polling figure was available on Friday morning as voting in some polling stations continued till 10.30 p.m., poll officials said.

Out of a total 2,41,805 voters, 2,25,192 exercised their franchise. Officials said 686 postal ballots were not included in the votes polled.

The strong room was sealed at 4.40 a.m. as the last Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) reached there at 1.30 a.m.

The constituency in Nalgonda district witnessed massive turnout during the final hours. Though the polling time ended at 6 p.m., those standing in queues were allowed to vote. The process continued till 10.30 p.m. in a few booths.

The turnout exceeded the figure of 2018 polls when 91.31 per cent of voters had cast their votes.

This time, there were a total of 47 candidates in the fray but the main contest was among
three major players – TRS, BJP and Congress.

The bypoll was necessitated after sitting MLA Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy resigned from the Congress to join the BJP in August. This time Reddy contested on the BJP ticket.

The TRS fielded former MLA Kusukuntla Prabhakar Reddy, who had lost to Rajagopal Reddy in 2018.

The Congress fielded Palvai Sravanthi Reddy, daughter of former MP Palvai Goverdhan Reddy.

Counting of votes will be taken up on November 6.

Following the heavy turnout, all the three major contestants exuded confidence of a victory. TRS leaders told party president and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao that polling trend shows that the party will win the bypoll.

After analysing the polling trend, finance and health minister T. Harish Rao claimed that TRS will win the by-election by a margin of over 20,000 votes.

TRS working president K. T. Rama Rao thanked all party leaders and workers who worked hard for the last one month. He also thanked social media warriors of the party who played a key role in educating people about the welfare and development schemes of the TRS government.

BJP state president Bandi Sanjay also exuded confidence that his party will win the bypoll. He alleged that the TRS spent Rs1,000 crore to win the by-election but the BJP will emerge victorious as voters wholeheartedly supported the party.

Leaders of the Congress party were equally confident of a win in Munugode. Party’s working president Ponnam Prabhakar said both TRS and BJP used money and liquor to buy votes.

In 2018, Rajagopal Reddy had won Munugode seat on Congress ticket, defeating his nearest rival K. Prabhakar Reddy of TRS by 23,552 votes.

Prabhakar Reddy was elected in 2014. This was the first victory of TRS in the constituency which was traditionally dominated by Congress and Communist Party of India (CPI).

This time both CPI and CPI-M backed the TRS.

T20 World Cup: Williamson makes 61 as New Zealand reach 185/6 despite Little’s hat-trick

0

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson played exquisite shots all across the park to make a solid 61 to help his side reach a challenging 185/6 against Ireland in Group 2 match of Super 12s in the Men’s T20 World Cup at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.

But the thunder of Williamson’s first fifty of this tournament, opening up after a slowish start, was stolen by Ireland left-arm pacer Josh Little taking a sensational hat-trick at the fag end of the innings, ending with figures of 3/22 in his four overs.

Little dismissed Williamson, Jimmy Neesham and Mitchell Santner on the trot in the 19th over to become just the second bowler from Ireland to take a hat-trick in T20 World Cups and also the second such instance of this in the ongoing tournament.

Pushed into batting first, New Zealand’s aggressive opening duo of Finn Allen and Devon Conway were kept in check for the initial stages of powerplay. Allen finally cut loose against Gareth Delany by taking three fours in the fourth over. He then took on pacer Adair with a four and a six. But the pacer had the last laugh in the final over of the powerplay, as Allen hit straight to mid-off.

In the 12th over, Conway holed out to long-on off Delany. But New Zealand were quick in rebuilding their innings with Williamson and Glenn Phillips hitting delightful boundaries. Though Phillips fell after a quick nine-ball 17, Williamson batted on for the bulk of the innings.

He seemed to have found his rhythm which had deserted him in the tournament, timing the ball as nicely as he did and picking runs through gaps at will. After getting his fifty with a magnificent flick going over deep mid-wicket fence off Barry McCarthy to reach his fifty, Williamson looked all set to get New Zealand past 200.

But Little’s hat-trick in the 19th over meant Ireland pulled back things very nicely to keep New Zealand to 185/6.

Brief scores: New Zealand 185/6 in 20 overs (Kane Williamson 61, Finn Allen 32; Josh Little 3/22, Gareth Delany 2/30) against Ireland.

T20 World Cup: KL Rahul will probably light up this tournament, says Gautam Gambhir

0

India’s tense five-run win over Bangladesh in their Men’s T20 World Cup Group 2 match at Adelaide Oval saw KL Rahul put a full-stop to a string of single-digit scores in the tournament with an elegant 32-ball 50 to bounce back in form.

Rahul’s knock was decorated with three fours and four sixes at a strike-rate of 156.25. He showcased high quality shots in a knock full of poise and composure. Now, former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir believes that Rahul will light up the tournament as the race for the semifinals heats up.

“When he got a fifty against Australia (in the practice match) in Brisbane, everyone was going crazy. He is probably going to light up this World Cup. A bad innings does not make you a bad player, neither does it make you a great player. So, you probably need to be more balanced. You got to give them time and then that one shot over point probably changed everything.

“He is back in form, and he was always in form. Yes, there are times when you want to contribute, you know that this is a World Cup and the entire world is looking at you. And if you haven’t had the best of starts, it doesn’t mean you’re a bad player,” said Gambhir on ‘Cricket Live’ show on Star Sports.

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar further explained how the honest feedback Rahul received during his lean run after entering international cricket has led to a positive impact on his game, “See, KL Rahul has been along for a long time now. He made his debut in Australia 2014/15. I was part of that tour that time. He has a special ability. He scored a 100 in his second match. So, we all knew he’s a special player, who is going to serve India for a long time.”

“His technique is tremendous, and times like this when you’ve had poor scores, you certainly require the support of your team-mates, not only lip service, but honest discussions as well. That’s where that honest feedback from somebody, who has seen you from a very young age and seen the progress you’ve made during the course of your career has been tremendous and that’s where KL Rahul was special.

“His innings actually for the first five-six balls, the way he left those deliveries, which meant he wasn’t inching, he wasn’t rushing through, and that there was a calmness around him. That helped him get that innings of substance.”

With India now in sight of a spot in the semifinals, Gambhir felt apart from Rahul, captain Rohit Sharma and all-rounder Hardik Pandya have to deliver with the bat. “If India have to win the World Cup, KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant (if he comes in the playing eleven), these three have to deliver along with Hardik Pandya, who is an X-factor.”

“So, yes, he’s back in form and hopefully he can continue this form and be as aggressive as he can be, because no one can stop him, the way he wants to play, only he can stop him.”

Samsung predicts Apple to launch foldable tablet by 2024

0

South Korean giant Samsung has predicted that its arch rival Apple is set to launch a foldable tablet by 2024.

Samsung’s Mobile Experience team recently met the suppliers and “is feeling optimistic about the foldable market,” reports AppleInsider.

According to them, Apple is likely to unveil its first foldable gadget by 2024 but it will not be an iPhone. “Even though there is a lot of demand for an iPhone Fold, the technology might not be ready yet,” the report said.

The bulky design of current folding phones does not align with Apple’s design philosophy.

Earlier, industry analyst firm CCS Insight had forecast that the technology giant would begin experimenting with foldable technology soon.

Apple is yet to enter the lucrative foldable market which is led by Samsung.

“Right now it does not make sense for Apple to make a foldable iPhone. We think they would shun that trend and probably dip a toe in the water with a foldable iPad,” said Ben Wood, chief of research at the firm.

“A folding iPhone would be super high risk for Apple. Firstly, it would have to be incredibly expensive in order to not cannibalise the existing iPhones,” he added.

The company was exploring foldable technology for displays of around 20-inches in size.

Amazon freezes corporate hirings amid rough economic conditions

0

Amazon has announced to freeze new hirings in its corporate workforce, with the global economy “in an uncertain place”.

Beth Galetti, Amazon’s senior vice president of people experience and technology, confirmed the move in a memo that the company had already begun pausing or slowing hiring in various corporate departments in “recent weeks”.

“We’re facing an unusual macro-economic environment, and want to balance our hiring and investments with being thoughtful about this economy,” Galetti wrote.

“With fewer people to hire at this moment, this should give each team an opportunity to further prioritise what matters most to customers and the business, and to be more productive,” he added.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has been looking for ways to cut costs across the company.

“Good companies that last a long period of time, who are thinking about the long term, always have this push and pull. There are some years where they’re expanding really broadly. Some years where they’re checking in and working on profitability, tightening the belt a little bit,” he said recently.

Galetti said that the company anticipates “keeping this pause in place for the next few months, and will continue to monitor what we’re seeing in the economy and the business to adjust as we think makes sense”.

“In general, depending on the business or area of the company, we will hire backfills to replace employees who move on to new opportunities, and there are some targeted places where we will continue to hire people incrementally,” he noted.

Twitter back after brief outage for some Indian users

0

Twitter suffered a brief outage for some Indian users on Friday morning and came back to life soon, as the new CEO Elon Musk prepared to sack several employees starting Friday.

Twitter on mobile was working fine but users on the desktop version had some troubles logging into the platform.

The Twitter website also went down for some users, with a message saying “Something went wrong, but don’t fret – let’s give it another shot”.

According to downdetector.com, a website that monitors online outages, 94 per cent users had issues with Twitter on Web, while just 6 per cent faced issues with the mobile platform.

In July, the micro-blogging platform suffered a mega outage as several users across the world had error messages like “this page is down”.

Several users also faced “over capacity” error messages across Twitter web, mobile and the TweetDeck app.

In March, Twitter users experienced difficulties accessing the platform on desktops as an outage was reported in Japan, India, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Twitter faced two mega outages in February as users were not able to post tweets for several minutes.

Paris Masters: Alcaraz races past Dimitrov to reach quarters

0

World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz won nine of the first 10 games to register a 6-1, 6-3 third-round victory over Grigor Dimitrov and reach the quarterfinals at the Paris Masters, here on Thursday.

Alcaraz was dialled-in from the start in his maiden ATP head-to-head meeting with the former World No.3 Dimitrov. Striking the ball cleanly off both wings from the baseline and deploying his drop shot to good effect throughout, the Spaniard converted five of seven break points against the Bulgarian’s serve to wrap up an impressive 72-minute win.

“I started playing pretty well. [Grigor’s] level is very much not the level you saw today, but I played very well. At the end of the second set, it was tougher for me, he came back, he raised the level and obviously it was tough. He had the chance to go up in the second set, I had to stay calm at that moment and show my best to not allow him to go up,” said Alcaraz after the match.

In a near-flawless opening, Alcaraz’s all-around game left Dimitrov with few chances to counter. The Spaniard dropped just two points behind serve in the first set as he picked up where he had left off in his straight-sets second-round win against Yoshihito Nishioka.

Dimitrov found his feet to reel off three straight games from 0-3 to draw level in the second set before carving out two breakpoint opportunities for a 4-3 lead, but Alcaraz’s relentless consistency proved crucial. He held off the Bulgarian’s charge to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in Paris, where he will take on seventh seed Andrey Rublev or Holger Rune.

“In that moment you have to stay calm, to think [about] what is happening and after that try to change a little bit,” said Alcaraz, when asked about Dimitrov’s second-set comeback.

“I [made] a couple of mistakes at the beginning of the match, but after that, I stayed calm,” he added.

If Alcaraz lifts his third Masters 1000 title of the year in Paris, the 19-year-old would be confirmed as the year-end No.1 in the ATP Rankings ahead of his debut appearance at the ATP Finals. He admitted he was enjoying playing in front of his parents in the French capital, where he received the ATP No.1 trophy presented during a ceremony on Monday evening.

“It’s such a pleasure. It’s tough to bring them to tournaments, and to have them in the box during the week is so special. Of course, taking the trophy for No. 1 in front of them was so special for me,” said Alcaraz.

Form is temporary but class is permanent, Jayawardene praises Kohli after his historic milestone

0

Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene heaped praise on Virat Kohli, who on Wednesday surpassed him to become the all-time leading run-scorer in the Men’s T20 World Cup history during India’s Super 12 match against Bangladesh in Adelaide.

Kohli reached the milestone when he crossed 16 runs in the seventh over of India’s innings, going Jayawardene’s record tally of 1016 runs. After his match-winning knock (64 not out off 44) versus Bangladesh, the Indian batter now has 1065 runs with an average of 88.75 and a strike rate of more than 132.46 in T20 World Cups.

Playing in his fifth T20 World Cup, the 33-year-old became the competition’s highest run-getter in only his 23rd innings, having scored 12 half-centuries. In comparison, Jayawardene had played 31 innings to set his record, though he faced fewer balls (754 balls) than Kohli did (773).

“Records are meant to be broken. Someone was always going to break my record, and it’s you, Virat. Brilliant mate, congratulations. You’ve always been a warrior,” Jayawardene said in a video shared by the ICC.

“Form is temporary but class is permanent. Very well done, buddy,” he added.

The former India skipper is currently the highest run-scorer at the ongoing T20 World Cup with 220 runs including three half-centuries in four matches.

“It was a closer game than we would have liked. It was another good day with the bat. I am happy the World Cup is in Australia because I can play my shots here. I love playing in Adelaide. I feel at home and want to keep batting,” said Kohli, who was named man of the match.

After beating Bangladesh, India will now face Zimbabwe in their last Super 12 game on Sunday.

Google plans to develop AI model supporting 1,000 most spoken languages

0

Tech giant Google has announced an ambitious new project to build a single AI language model that supports the world’s 1,000 most spoken languages.

According to The Verge, as a first step toward this goal, the company is unveiling an AI model trained on over 400 languages, which it calls “the largest language coverage seen in a speech model today.”

“The company believes that creating a model of this size will make it easier to bring various AI functionalities to languages that are poorly represented in online spaces and AI training datasets (also known as “low-resource languages),” Zoubin Ghahramani, vice president of research at Google AI was quoted as saying.

“By having a single model that is exposed to and trained on many different languages, we get much better performance on our low-resource languages,” he added.

These language models have already been integrated into Google Search, despite criticism about their functionality.

Models of language have some flaws, such as re-enacting harmful societal biases such as racism and xenophobia and failing to comprehend human-oriented language.

The company has fired its own researchers for publishing papers highlighting these issues, according to a report.

Moreover, the company shared new research on text-to-video models, a prototype AI writing assistant called Wordcraft, and an update to its AI Test Kitchen app that allows users access to under-development AI models like Imagen, which converts text into images, it added.

You can now control your iPhone with your brain: Report

0

Synchron, a New York-based company, has created a device called “Synchron Switch” that allows patients to control an iPhone or iPad using their brain.

According to Semafor, an array of sensors known as a “Stentrode” is inserted into the top of the brain via a blood vessel. It is controlled wirelessly using the Synchron Switch from the patient’s chest.

Rodney Gorham, a retired software salesman in Melbourne, has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a nervous system disease that severely impacts physical functioning.

Synchron has six patients using the Synchron Switch device and Gorham is the first ever to use it with an Apple product, according to a report.

“We’re excited about iOS and Apple products because they’re so ubiquitous, and this would be the first brain switch input into the device,” Tom Oxley, Synchron’s co-founder and CEO was quoted as saying.

With the Synchron Switch, Gorham’s thoughts are turned into action on the iPad.

The iPad registers Gorham’s foot tapping as a finger tap when he thinks about tapping his foot.

Using his Synchron Switch, Gorham is able to send single-word text messages from his iPad, reports Semafor.

Synchron is also the first company to receive approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to conduct clinical trials for a computer-brain implant.

The company which has raised $70 million in venture and other funding, foots the cost of implanting and maintaining the device, it added.

Mark Zuckerberg announces 32-person video call on WhatsApp

0

Meta Founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday announced the global roll out of a 32-person video calling feature called ‘Communities’ on WhatsApp.

Zuckerberg posted a video on Facebook to announce the new feature, calling it a “major evolution for WhatsApp”.

“We’re launching Communities on WhatsApp. It makes groups better by enabling sub-groups, multiple threads, announcement channels, and more. All secured by end to end encryption so your messages stay private,” he said.

The new feature will allow admins to better organise the conversations “under one umbrella”, Zuckerberg added.

Besides Communities, WhatsApp also released more features to “improve the group chat experience”, including in-chat polls, larger file sharing, reactions, groups with up to 1,024 users and shareable call links.

Meanwhile, as Meta doubled down on its monetisation drive across its family of apps, Zuckerberg had said that JioMart on WhatsApp in India was going to be a big opportunity for the paid messaging market.

India’s Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma nominated for ICC Women’s Player of the Month award

0

India duo of middle-order batter Jemimah Rodrigues and off-spin all-rounder Deepti Sharma on Thursday were named on the shortlist for ICC Women’s Player of the Month award, following their heroics in the Women’s Asia Cup for India to clinch the trophy. Apart from the two, Pakistan’s Nida Dar has also been nominated for the honour.

Jemimah was previously nominated back in August thanks to her stellar displays in the Commonwealth Games, and once again she was a driving force behind India’s surge to Women’s Asia Cup success.

When her side celebrated victory over Sri Lanka in the final, Jemimah was the leading run-scorer for the tournament, having amassed 217 runs from her eight matches at an average of 54.25. Among her top displays was the 76 she scored against the eventual finalists in the opening game, setting the tone for India’s prize-winning campaign for the seventh time in the history of the tournament.

Deepti, another of India’s talismanic performers, enjoyed a prolific month during the Women’s Asia Cup, departing Bangladesh with the event trophy and the Player of the Tournament accolade.

Her 13 wickets at a remarkable average of 7.69 underlines the consistent threat she posed with the ball, including impressive figures of three for against Pakistan and three for in the semi-final against Thailand.

Nida, meanwhile, has for so long been an influential figure in the Pakistan lineup, and throughout the Women’s Asia Cup in Bangladesh last month, she showed the full range of her batting and bowling abilities. She finished the month having scored 145 runs at an average of 72.50 in her seven T20Is, as well as taking eight wickets.

Despite not getting to the final, Nida was inspirational not least in her side’s historic victory over India in Sylhet, where she won the Player of the Match award for her unbeaten 56 and two wickets for 23 runs.
