India’s gaming market reaches $2.6 bn with 507 mn gamers

0

Riding on more than 500 million gamers across mobile, PC and Cloud gaming platforms, India’s gaming market has likely reached $2.6 billion in revenue this year which is expected to quadruple to $8.6 billion by 2027, a new report showed on Thursday.

The country now has about 120 million paid gaming users with at least $20 revenue per user, according to the report by Lumikai, a gaming and interactive media venture capital fund.

With 15 billion downloads, India was the world’s largest consumer of mobile games in FY22.

“India crossed half a billion gamers in FY22, up from 450 million the year prior. Industry growth is expected to be fuelled by a rapidly increasing gamer base, higher conversion to paid users, and increasing sophistication of Indian gamers,” said Justin Shriram Keeling, Founding General Partner, Lumikai on the sidelines of the India Game Developers Conference (IGDC) Summit in Hyderabad.

In FY22, mid-core games (like BGMI which is now banned and Free Fire) were the fastest growing gaming category, achieving growth of 32 per cent, grossing combined revenues of $550 million.

According to the report, Nearly 48 per cent of gamers spend money on mid-core games and 65 per cent of paying gamers claim they have engaged in in-app purchases at least once.

Indian gaming companies are on track to raise $513 million for the calendar year. Gaming sector funding is up 380 per cent from 2019 and up by 23 per cent from 2020.

“Web3 emerged as an increasingly popular technology in games, with 30 per cent of 450 Indian Web3 companies operating in gaming. Web3 games in India have raised $400 million in funding (2019-22),” the findings showed.

India-based content is growing in popularity with 80 per cent of gamers showing a proclivity to play games based on Indian intellectual property.

“The number of female gamers in India is on the rise. Male: female ratio of surveyed gamers yielded a 60:40 ratio, equally split between metro and non-metro cities,” the report noted.

“The last 28 months have been watershed years in terms of attracting VC investment of over $2.6 billion in the Indian gaming landscape. This sustained momentum should further drive entrepreneurial ambition and innovation in the Indian gaming industry,” said Salone Sehgal, Founding General Partner, Lumikai.

Lumikai has so far backed nine gaming startups including Loco, Bombay Play, Elo Elo, Studio Sirah, Cloudfeather Games.

T20 World Cup: Bangladesh wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan accuses Virat Kohli of fake fielding in India’s tense victory

0

After India secured a tense five-run victory over Bangladesh in Group 2 Super 12 match in Mens T20 World Cup at Adelaide Oval, wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan accused talismanic batter Virat Kohli of fake fielding during the match, claiming that the umpires missed the incident and could have resulted in the opposition getting crucial five runs as penalty.

The incident that Hasan talked about going unnoticed took place in the seventh over of Bangladesh’s chase when Kohli feigned a throw while standing at point, as if he was relaying a throw coming from Arshdeep Singh from the deep off the bowling of Axar Patel.

Neither the on-field umpires, Marais Erasmus and Chris Brown, spotted it, nor did the two Bangladeshi batters, openers Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto, out in the middle, pointed it out.

“We all saw that it was a wet ground. Eventually, when we talk about these things, there was also a fake throw. It could have been a five-run penalty. That also could have gone our way, but unfortunately, even that didn’t materialise,” said Hasan to reporters in the mixed zone after the match ended.

Law 41.5, pertaining to unfair play, prohibits the “deliberate distraction, deception or obstruction of (the) batter”, and if an incident is deemed to be a breach, the umpire can declare that particular delivery as dead ball, and award the batting side five runs.

But Hasan didn’t mention if either of Das or Shanto spoke to him or to the team about distraction or deception from Kohli pretending to throw the ball to the keeper.

Coming to the match, fifties from KL Rahul and Kohli (64 not out off 44 balls), along with Suryakumar Yadav’s 16-ball 30, took India to a massive 184/6 in 20 overs. Bangladesh seemed to be cruising to the target of 185 with Das making a stunning 27-ball 60 as they reached 66 for no loss in the first seven overs.

But a 50-minute rain interruption meant Bangladesh’s target was changed to 151 in 16 overs as per the DLS method. Bangladesh could make only 79 runs in the remaining nine overs, losing six wickets and ending up at 145/6 in 16 overs, losing the game by five runs.

T20 World Cup: Knew the good contribution for the team was coming, says KL Rahul

0

After shrugging off his lean run in Men’s T20 World Cup with an elegant 32-ball fifty in India’s five-run win over Bangladesh in Men’s T20 World Cup, opener KL Rahul stated he had the belief in himself about making a good contribution for the team in the tournament.

With scores of 4, 9 and 9 in first three Super 12 matches, Rahul had a torrid time with the bat. He received solid backing from head coach Rahul Dravid to come good in the tournament and on Wednesday, justified the faith imposed on him by hitting three fours and four sixes at a strike-rate of 156.25.

“I was disappointed at having not contributed for three games. Every innings is important especially in a big tournament like this. So that is the only doubt that is in your mind. But at least I don’t get frustrated or I didn’t feel like my form or my confidence was low.”

“I just didn’t get the runs. It happens in the game. You’re not always going to keep scoring runs. It’s what you feel if you’re feeling confident and you know that good innings will come and it’s around the corner.”

“I knew that in my heart that I was seeing the ball well. Whatever I need to do, my processes were right. So I knew the good knock or good contribution for the team was coming,” said Rahul in the post-match press conference.

Asked about his feelings during the time when he didn’t fire with the bat in the tournament, Rahul said, “My emotions were good. I’m excited to be here. It’s obviously a huge opportunity for all of us, and we all look forward to the World Cup for the last 10 to 12 months. We worked really hard as individuals and as a team.”

“I was still relaxed. I’ve always tried to be as balanced as I can as a person. But whether I do well, whether I don’t do well, I try to judge myself on whether my mindset is right, and whether I’m trying to do the role and the responsibility that the team expects me to do. If I think I’m doing that well, I can go to sleep peacefully.”

Rahul, who ran out Litton Das with a fluid direct hit from deep mid-wicket just after rain stopped play for nearly 50 minutes to set the path for India’s comeback and eventually the five-run victory, credited captain Rohit Sharma as well as Indian team management for supporting him very well in the initial lean phase.

“We’ve all said this a lot of times before as well – the support staff, this is where they play a really important role in creating that environment where a player feels confident, comfortable and there is no doubt about his ability or what he brings to the team. They’ve kept that environment really, really balanced all the time.”

“Whether we do well or don’t do well, we always stay balanced, and the support staff have been really supportive. The captain always backed his players and you can see that. That’s why players always, even if we’ve had a couple of tough innings, we find a way to come back and do well for the team.”

“So it’s been a long — it’s something that you work on as a team. There are things you work on as an individual which helps you. But these are things as a team you work and support staff, the coach, the captain, when they show confidence and faith in you, it gives you that confidence as a player that you will get the backing if you’re going in the right direction.”

PKL 9: Bengal Warriors, Tamil Thalaivas share points

0

Bengal Warriors and Tamil Thalaivas played an enthralling 41-41 tie in the vivo Pro Kabaddi League Season 9 at the Shree Shivchhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi here on Wednesday.

An inspired Maninder Singh performance saw him get 19 points for the Warriors and he was backed up by a brilliant 11 points from captain Deepak Niwas Hooda. Meanwhile, Narender starred for the Thalaivas with 15 points.

A slow burn contest sparked to life when Ajinkya Pawar, on a DO OR DIE raid caught the Warriors’ Balaji D and Vaibhav Garje to help the Thalaivas edge ahead. While Maninder kept the Warriors in the hunt, constantly poaching bonus points, the Thalaivas raiders were more prolific on the mat. They got the first ALL OUT with a SUPER RAID, Narender catching out Balaji D, Vaibhav Garje and Shrikant Jadhav to give them a 21-9 lead.

It didn’t take them too long to get a second ALL OUT, this one created by an inept Warriors defence – who failed to get a single successful tackle in the first half. Going into halftime, the Thalaivas led 26-14.

The Warriors came out a different unit in the second half. Maninder and Deepak Niwas Hooda rallied their side to initiate their own ALL OUT to reduce the margin of the lead. While the Thalaivas defence faltered, the Warriors kept chipping away, their raiders suddenly the ones in the ascendancy.

With three minutes to go, the two teams were locked level, with no room for error at all. The teams traded the lead multiple times, trading raid for raid and tackle for tackle. Maninder got the Warriors a one-point lead on the second last raid, however, Pawar helped the Thalaivas tie the match in the end.

TikTok tells European users its staff in China can access their data

0

TikTok is spelling out to its European users of the platform that their data can be accessed by employees outside the continent, including in China, amid political and regulatory concerns about Chinese access to user information on the site, according to a media report.

The Chinese-owned social video app is updating its privacy policy to confirm that staff in countries, including China, are allowed to access user data to ensure their experience of the platform is “consistent, enjoyable and safe”, The Guardian reported.

The other countries where European user data could be accessed by TikTok staff include Brazil, Canada and Israel as well as the US and Singapore, where European user data is stored currently, the report said.

TikTok’s head of privacy in Europe, Elaine Fox, said: “Based on a demonstrated need to do their job, subject to a series of robust security controls and approval protocols, and by way of methods that are recognised under the GDPR [the EU’s general data protection regulation], we allow certain employees within our corporate group located in Brazil, Canada, China, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and the United States, remote access to TikTok European user data.”

Data could be used to conduct checks on aspects of the platform, including the performance of its algorithms, which recommend content to users, and detect vexatious automated accounts. TikTok has previously acknowledged that some user data is accessed by employees of the company’s parent, ByteDance, in China.

In a letter to Republican senators disclosed in July, TikTok’s chief executive, Shou Zi Chew, said a “narrow set of non-sensitive” US user data could be viewed by foreign employees if approved by a US-based TikTok security team. He added that none of the data were shared with Chinese government officials, The Guardian reported.

The privacy policy update, which applies to the UK, the European Economic Area, and Switzerland, and which goes live on December 2, takes place against a backdrop of political and regulatory pressure over use of data generated by the app, which has more than a billion users worldwide.

Niharika relates to her character in ‘Faltu’: Both have dreams and ambitions

0

TV actress Niharika Chouksey, who is playing the titular role in the new show ‘Faltu’ said that she relates to her character in many ways as both are bold, daring and fearless.

She reveals: “On many levels I connect to Faltu as she is outspoken and extrovert like me. She is confident, speaks what’s on her mind and most importantly Faltu and Niharika both have many dreams and ambitions. I feel very emotionally connected to the character.”

“I won’t say it’s not challenging but it’s more like a responsibility as I am portraying so many girls, who have actually lived or are living through this hell. Hope I won’t let them down and inspire them and let them know they aren’t alone.”

‘Faltu’ is all about the attitude of people living in rural parts towards girl child and how certain times, they end up giving them names like Faltu with a belief that the next child will be a boy. Niharika plays a similar kind of role of a rural girl whose family thinks she is useless being a girl and thus calls her ‘Faltu’.

When asked what according to Niharika is the USP of the show and why even people living in urban areas are going to connect with it, she informs media: “USP of the show is definitely our story which is so real and genuine and that’s why people will connect to it because there are so many little girls who have to go through this hell and bury their dreams because they are considered unwanted and useless.”

While Niharika plays the lead character in the show, there is also an innocent chemistry that is shown between her and the male lead played by Aakash Ahuja. His character of Ayaan plays an important role in Faltu’s life and he somehow wants to help her but has his own limitations because of the society.

While talking about her chemistry with Aakash, the ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’ actress said: “We share a great bond and that’s what reflects on screen. He is amazing in his craft and super supportive and we both try to improvise and put efforts to make scenes more real. His character plays a very important role in Faltu’s life. He is the one who guides and protects her. Faltu’s life changes for good when she meets Ayaan as her mentor and coach.”

‘Faltu’ is going to start on Star Plus from November 2.

T20 World Cup: David Miller sees Pakistan’s misfiring top-order an area to exploit for South Africa

0

South Africa’s in-form batter David Miller sees Pakistan’s misfiring top-order as an area to exploit for his bowling attack and put the middle-order under pressure ahead of Thursday’s important Group 2 clash in the T20 World Cup at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Pakistan has mostly relied on the opening pair of captain Babar Azam and wicketkeeper Muhammad Rizwan to get a huge chunk of their runs with the bat. But the duo haven’t been able to score big runs though Rizwan top-scored with 49 in Pakistan’s win over Netherlands at Perth while Azam’s tally in the tournament reads as 4, 4 and 0.

“I think it is an area to exploit. This game is all about confidence, and yeah, they haven’t probably performed the way they’ve wanted to, but they’re world-class players, and we’re expecting them to come out and bring their A-game and be up for the challenge.

“It’s by all means not just going in there and expecting to get them out first ball or early up. We’ve got to work really hard for every wicket, and hopefully we can get them early and put the Pakistan middle order under pressure a little bit earlier than later,” said Miller in the pre-match press conference.

With Pakistan needing wins in their favour to have a slim chance at entering the semifinals, Miller insisted that South Africa, the Group 2 table-toppers, are taking the challenge coming from Pakistan very seriously.

“We all know every game in the World Cup is an important game, and against Pakistan you’ve got to make sure that you’re on your A-game as an opponent, so just making sure that we’re sticking to our processes and what has worked in the past to implementing it tomorrow.

“Pakistan are a great team, and they’ve got some serious match winners, but we’ve just got to take it as it comes, and definitely the boys are up for it, and then I suppose it’s a must-win game for them, so they’re going to be coming and charging, and we’re definitely prepared for it.”

In their last match, South Africa’s four-man pace attack, led by Lungi Ngidi’s fantastic 4/29 and Wayne Parnell’s 3/15, made excellent use of pace and extra bounce on a typical Perth pitch to keep India to 133/9, which was chased down with five wickets in hand.

Miller, who was unbeaten on 59 in the successful chase against India, pointed out that the bowling attack feels confident of doing well due to the conditions on offer in Australia. “Our pace attack has done great things over the years, and we’ve managed to, like I said, for the last year, the squad has sort of come into their own, especially as a bowling unit. The guys are bowling with great energy, a lot of pace, and that’s what we need here in Australia.

“It is nice to have someone like Marco (Jansen) sitting on the bench and having him as reserve. I mean, it’s a healthy environment to have. I think the guys are in a good space, and again, just one game at a time and trying to sort of stick to the process and stay in the moment.”

NASA prepares to bid goodbye to Mars InSight lander

0

NASA’s Mars InSight lander is set to fall silent in the next few weeks, ending its history-making mission to reveal secrets of the Red Planet’s interior.

The spacecraft’s power generation continues to decline as windblown dust on its solar panels thickens, so the team has taken steps to continue as long as possible with what power remains, the US space agency said in a statement late on Tuesday.

The most important of the final steps with the InSight mission is storing its trove of data and making it accessible to researchers around the world.

The lander data has yielded details about Mars’ interior layers, its liquid core, the surprisingly variable remnants beneath the surface of its mostly extinct magnetic field, weather on this part of Mars, and lots of quake activity.

InSight’s seismometer has detected more than 1,300 marsquakes since the lander touched down in November 2018, the largest measuring a magnitude 5.

“Finally, we can see Mars as a planet with layers, with different thicknesses, compositions. We’re starting to really tease out the details. Now it’s not just this enigma; it’s actually a living, breathing planet,” said Bruce Banerdt of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.

Earlier this summer, the lander had so little remaining power that the mission turned off all of InSight’s other science instruments in order to keep the seismometer running.

They even turned off the fault protection system that would otherwise automatically shut down the seismometer if the system detects that the lander’s power generation is dangerously low.

“We were down to less than 20 per cent of the original generating capacity,” said Banerdt. “That means we can’t afford to run the instruments around the clock.”

NASA will declare the mission over when InSight misses two consecutive communication sessions with the spacecraft orbiting Mars, part of the Mars Relay Network.

There will be no heroic measures to re-establish contact with InSight.

In the meantime, as long as InSight remains in contact, the team will continue gathering data.

Twitter ends ad-free articles for premium Blue subscribers

0

Twitter has announced to discontinue ad-free articles for its premium Blue subscribers under Elon Musk as new CEO.

Ad-free articles facility will be nor more for its premium Blue subscribers under the Elon Musk as CEO, twitter said.

The micro-blogging platform said that it made the decision “to discontinue Ad-free Articles, effective as of close of business, on October 31, 2022”.

Twitter included ad-free articles when it rolled out its Blue subscription last year for $4.99.

A portion of the revenue from Twitter Blue subscription fees went directly to publishers within their network.

The feature was based on the platform Twitter acquired from Scroll, a service that specialised in removing ads from news sites.

“We will stop displaying the ‘Twitter Blue Publisher’ label on any tweets containing your articles. We will no longer be sending a Twitter Blue token when people on Twitter access articles from your properties,” the micro-blogging platform said in an email sent to publishers.

“This will prevent the ad-free experience on your site from loading. There is no change required from your end, but feel free to remove any Twitter Blue code from your site,” said the company.

The features let Blue users view ad-free articles on participating websites.

“This is just the beginning for Ad-free Articles with much more ad-free content to come as we continue to build more partnerships, with more publishers, in more markets,” the company had said in November last year.

“Our goal is to help each publishing partner make 50 per cent more per person than they would have made from serving ads to that person,” it added.
