T20 World Cup: India is the favourite team; winning against them will be called an upset, says Shakib

0

On the eve of their Super 12 match in the T20 World Cup against India, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan believes that the Rohit Sharma-led side are the favourites to win Wednesday’s match and if his side win against the 2007 champions, it will be termed an upset.

After being blown away by South Africa’s pace and bounce in a five-wicket loss at Perth, India are seeking to get back to winning ways in the tournament when they will be up against Bangladesh in a crucial Group 2 match at the scenic Adelaide Oval on Wednesday.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, are coming into the match after a nail-biting three-run win over Zimbabwe at Brisbane. In 11 T20I matches played between the two teams, India have won 10 while Bangladesh have been on the winning side just once.

“India is the favourite team, they (have) come here to win the (T20) World Cup. We are not favourite and we didn’t come here to win the World Cup. So, you can understand the situation and we know it very well. If we can win against India, it will (be) called an upset. We will try to play our best cricket and try to make an upset,” said Shakib in the pre-match press conference.

PM Modi slams Congress for ‘insulting’ Sardar Patel

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday mocked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ without naming it, and said that the party has ignored Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary.

Citing Congress’ advertisements in local newspapers in Gujarat on Monday, Modi said after laying the foundation stone for projects worth Rs 8,000 crore here, “Though today is Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary, none of Congress’ ads carries his photo or his name. Sardar Patel was such a tall Congress leader and a minister in Jawaharlal Nehru’s Cabinet. You can’t unite over Sardar Patel, and now you are out to connect India. Why is the Congress insulting Sardar Patel? Gujarat will never tolerate this insult.”

The Prime Minister added, “Life in Gujarat is full of struggle. Every decade we have faced droughts, the devastating earthquake had also tested us, but we, the courageous Gujaratis, could never be defeated by tough times. We have always confronted adverse situations with whatever resources we had at our disposal. Banaskantha district is an example of this.”

Recollecting his old days in north Gujarat, Modi said, “Don’t you remember there were very few surface water sources here? North Gujarat was dependent on underground fluoride water, which had side-effects on our health. But since you gave me an opportunity to serve you, we worked on water harvesting by constructing check dams on rivers and deepening the traditional lakes, which helped the region meet its water needs.”

RBI measures controlled inflation, but challenges remain

0

Economists are of the view that the measures taken by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have controlled inflation and add that inflation will come down.

A senior economist also said the headline inflation could be 7.5 percent in December putting a spanner in the inflation projections of the central bank.

The RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will meet on November 3 to discuss what it would tell the Centre as to why it was not able to restrain the inflation within four percent + or – two percent for three consecutive quarters.

The RBI may also sound out to the Central government as to the course of inflation as well as the reasons why it may be at elevated levels.

India’s central bank has been trying to contain inflation by increasing the repo rate — the rate at which it lends to the banks.

The central bank has increased the repo rate by 190 basis points in recent times and the last one was by 50 basis points.

In India, retail inflation rose to 7.41 percent in September.

“The measures taken by the government and RBI have been able to control inflation from the high of 7.8 percent we had seen in April. The fall in global commodity prices has also been supported in containing inflation. Inflationary expectations have also come down,” Rajani Sinha, Chief Economist, CARE Ratings Ltd told Media.

“However, the concern is the stickiness of core inflation above six percent and the renewed surge in domestic food inflation in the last few months. The measures taken by RBI to control inflation will show further impact with a lag of a few quarters,” she added.

“There is a strong case for the RBI arguing that (a) inflation has primarily been caused by supply-side shocks with global commodity prices having an impact (b) rupee depreciation has added to imported inflation (c) the RBI on its part was proactive in raising rates even between two policies as it did in May when it saw things were going out of hand post-Ukraine war and (d) there have been some measures like increase in goods and services tax (GST) which has added to inflation that was happening in parallel,” Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist, Bank of Baroda, told Media.

“Therefore, there is an explanation as to why inflation was high. But the central bank has been acting to bring it down through the instruments it has like repo and CRR (cash reserve ratio). It has succeeded in lowering surplus liquidity too which can be proved,” Sabnavis added.

“There was a huge sale of forex almost Rs 3 lakh crore to maintain the exchange rate. Inflation which was more than the target continuously for three quarters is estimated to come to around 6 percent by three more quarters. Interest rates (repo rate) have been increased by almost 1.9 percent. As such the MPC may only be constrained to say that the present steps taken need some more time for having a positive impact to reduce inflation. This is subject to the time inconsistency impact,” K. Ramasubramanian, retired General Manager, RBI, and a forex advisor told IANS.

According to Sinha, the CPI inflation is estimated to inch below seven percent in the next few months due to the base effect and below six percent by the end of the fiscal year.

Looking ahead, Sinha said the RBI could hike the repo rate further by 25-50 bps in the current fiscal year.

“As we approach closer to the neutral policy rate, RBI will get more cautious in its rate decision,” she added.

Citing the unseasonal rain affecting the Kharif crops and the September food inflation at 8.4 percent Dr. Soumya Kanti Ghosh, Group Chief Economic Adviser, State Bank of India said in 2019 when such rains happened, the average food prices more than doubled from 4.9 percent to 10.9 percent.

Similarly, the headline inflation in December could be 7.5 percent and could put a spanner to the inflation projections of RBI and market consensus, Ghosh said in a research report.

“This could also mean that the terminal repo rate could still be difficult to comprehend at this time, though consensus puts it at 6.5 percent,” Ghosh said.

According to Sinha, the US Federal Reserve’s policy decisions and the consequences on the currency market will also have a bearing on RBI’s future policy decisions.

Economists said the MPC will not be deciding on the policy rate at their November 3 meeting.

“With global commodity prices falling and the likely support of base effect in containing India’s CPI inflation in the next few months, RBI is unlikely to be in a tearing hurry,” Sinha added.

Incredibly proud of the record 14 race wins in a year, says Max Verstappen

0

Dutch Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen has expressed his surprise at winning a record 14 races in a year and eclipsing the feats of Germany’s Michael Schumacher (2004) and Sebastian Vettel (2013), who have 13 race wins in a year.

Verstappen made history as he beat Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton to claim his 14th victory of the 2022 season at the Mexican Grand Prix after an intriguing strategic battle at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez here on Sunday.

The Red Bull driver said he was “incredibly proud” to achieve the feat.

Verstappen took pole position by more than three-tenths as Mercedes’ George Russell qualified on the front row and Lewis Hamilton qualified third on Saturday. Verstappen — on soft tires while the Mercedes chose mediums — retained his lead in Sunday’s race, and it soon became clear that he would be able to pull off a one-stop strategy and win, which he did by a margin of more than 15 seconds.

“Yeah, I mean another great race, I think. We knew that that first stint was going to be the crucial one for us to keep that soft tyre alive long enough, which seemed to work. I mean, I did struggle a bit towards the end, but luckily the gap was big enough to extend a few laps, and yeah, once we put on the medium tires, everything was working quite well,” Verstappen told formula1.com.

“I think quite early on, we figured that we could make it to the end. Another great race but also, it’s just an incredible season for us as a team. I never thought I would be able to win 14 races in a year, but of course, incredibly proud.”

Not only has Verstappen taken a record-breaking 14th victory this season, but he has also set a new record for points scored in a single season, with 416, according to the F1 website.

“We have a Sprint race in Brazil, and hopefully we can score a few more,” he said. “But I mean, it’s not about that. At the end of the day, it’s about trying to win a championship and it doesn’t matter by how many points you do it — but it does show we are having an incredible year.”

Having taken his 34th career win, Verstappen heads to Brazil just seven victories off the tally of 41 set by Ayrton Senna. The Dutchman clearly enjoyed the atmosphere in Mexico City, as he said, “It’s amazing. It’s an incredible atmosphere and we love to come here.

“I mean, they put on a great show, the atmosphere, in general, is incredible with the fans, they are super passionate about Formula 1 — but of course about Checo — but it also helps a lot that you have that whole stadium. It makes it look incredible. It’s a great atmosphere,” he added.

Sunak accused of ‘washing his hands’ of leadership on int’l climate action

0

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s decision to snub the upcoming COP27 UN climate talks in Egypt, and to keep King Charles III from attending, has angered and upset countries around the world, risking Britain’s standing on the world stage and raising concerns over his government’s commitment to tackling the climate crisis, a media report said.

Several developing countries told the Guardian of their dismay.

Carlos Fuller, Belize’s Ambassador to the UN, said: “I can understand why the king was asked not to attend, keeping him out of the fray. However, as the principal UK policymaker and the COP26 President, the Prime Minister should have led the summit.

“It seems as if they are washing their hands of leadership.”

Sunak’s reason for not going was also questioned, said the Guardian report.

Mohamed Nasheed, the speaker of the Maldivian Parliament and former President, said: “(It’s) very worrying that the UK thought there was anything more serious than climate change. You can count the pennies but might lose pounds.

Developed countries were also concerned. One senior government aide said: “It appears as if the new UK Prime Minister wants to wash his hands of the previously strong role the government played on international climate action. It’s another stab in the back for (COP26 President Alok) Sharma.”

The COP26 talks in Glasgow last November, headed by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and chaired by a cabinet minister, Alok Sharma, ended with a global consensus on limiting temperature rises to 1.5 degrees Celsius for the first time, a major diplomatic achievement that was widely lauded.

Sunak had attended and led discussions on climate finance, likely to be a major issue at COP27, the Guardian reported.

Instead of attending the climate summit, Sunak will speak at a reception for business and environmental leaders to be hosted by the King at Buckingham Palace on Friday, two days before COP27 begins.

But his failure to attend the talks has raised concerns over the UK’s stance on the climate crisis, with the government handing out new oil and gas licenses and tax breaks for increasing fossil fuel production.

Big B walks the ramp on request of ‘KBC 14’ contestant

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan walked the ramp along with ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 14’ contestant and former Miss Odisha’s first runner-up, Pooja Tripathy, on her request.

She called it “lion walk” and not “catwalk” as she wanted to make it look more graceful with the host.

4 killed in Colorado house shooting

0

Four people were killed in a shooting at a house in Aurora, a city in the US state of Colorado, with the suspect still at large, local police said.

In a statement on Sunday, the Aurora Police Department (APD) said it received a report of a shooting at the house downtown at roughly 2 a.m., reports Xinhua news agency.

Officers found four adults, three men and one woman, dead from gunshot wounds when they arrived three minutes later.

The suspect was identified as Joseph Castorena, 21, supposedly the domestic partner of the woman killed in the house.

A relative of the dead woman told local MSNBC 9 news channel that it was an ambush shooting.

The suspect hid in the house and opened fire when the victims returned from a party.

Shortly after the shooting, a reverse 911 alert was issued in a one-mile radius for all residences to shelter in place, while officers searched the neighborhood in the dark.

The APD classified this investigation as a homicide case but warned the suspect was dangerous and may have a gun.

Telugu star Sudheer Babu’s pan India film titled ‘Harom Hara’

Director Gnanasagar Dwaraka’s upcoming film, featuring actor Sudheer Babu in the lead, has been titled ‘Harom Hara’, its makers announced on Monday.

This will be Sudheer Babu’s 18th film and is being produced by Sumanth G. Naidu under the banner of SSC (Sree Subrahmanyeshwara Cinemas).

DiDwaraka is best known for his debut film, the youthful entertainer ‘Sehari’.

Along with the title ‘Harom Hara’, the makers also released the tagline, ‘The Revolt’. Sources say that while the title appears to be spiritual, the tagline discloses the revenge aspect of the story.

The conceptual title video demonstrates the setting, backdrop, and scale of the movie.

The story is set in 1989 in Kuppam of Chittoor district. Popular places such as Subramanya Swamy Temple, Jagadamba Talkies, and a railway station are shown in the video.

The video presents Sudheer Babu in a never-seen-before mass avatar. “Inga Seppedem Ledua Sesedea” utters Sudheer Babu, when a person asks him to put an end to his silence.

The actor seems to have undergone a complete makeover for the movie. Chaitan Bharadwaj’s background score is apt.

Aravind Vishwanathan has handled the cinematography of the movie, while Ramesh Kumar G presents it.

‘Harom Hara’ will have a pan-India release in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi.

Talks likely underway for India-Pakistan Test in Australia, says former cricketer Simon O’Donnell

0

Former Australia allrounder Simon O’Donnell has indicated talks are likely underway for India and Pakistan to play a Test match Down Under, following the grand success of the clash between the arch-rivals in the ICC T20 World Cup at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on October 23.

More than 90,000 spectators witnessed India’s thrilling last-ball T20 World Cup Super-12 win against Pakistan at MCG, while millions across the world watched the match on television, resulting in a revenue windfall for Cricket Australia (CA).

India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series for ages due to tensions between the neighbors and their matches are restricted to only major tournaments organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

O’Donnell, who has played six Tests and 87 ODIs primarily as a right-arm pace bowler, said there are also talks of a potential triangular ODI series involving India, Pakistan, and Australia if the “hopes of a Test match fall through”, according to sen.com.au.

“That (their T20 World Cup clash) was extraordinary,” O’Donnell said on SEN Breakfast on Monday.

“That game itself is the one that’s held the tournament up so far, people keep referring back to it. There were 90,000 at a neutral venue, and there was extraordinary emotion, in the scenes of the game, the tightness of the game, and the pressure. It was magnificent sort of stuff, to the level that I can say there will be discussions being had, or there are discussions being had to play a Test match here,” said O’Donnell.

“There’s also the possibility of a triangular One-Day series between India, Pakistan, and Australia or a Test match between India and Pakistan. My word is there are (conversations happening), in the wake of this (T20 World Cup clash). There are already discussions taking place,” he added.

O’Donnell opined that cricket’s governing bodies should not fritter away the gains from the T20 World Cup clash between the two countries and cash in on the success.

“You can’t let that just dissipate and fade,” O’Donnell said. “You need to envelop and embrace it, I can tell you discussions are underway.”

India and Pakistan last played a Test series in 2007 with India winning the three-game series 1-0 on home soil.

Scientists identify ultra-potent antibody that can offset all Omicron variants

0

An international team of researchers has identified a pan-variant and ultra-potent neutralizing antibody that can offset Omicron variants.

Named ‘S2X324’, its neutralising potency was largely unaffected by any of the Omicron variants tested, said the study published in the journal Science.

The scientists suggested that combining this antibody with others in a cocktail might reduce the chances of the virus becoming antibody-treatment resistant.

The team looked at several aspects of the effects of exposure to earlier forms of the SARS-CoV-2 spike antigen — or immune-provoking protein — on the immune system’s reaction to the Omicron variants.

Past studies from the same team have noted that the BA.1 Omicron variant emerged as a “major antigenic shift due to the unprecedented magnitude of immune evasion associated with this variant of concern”.

They explained that mutations in two of the main antibody targets in the virus explain why there is markedly reduced antibody-neutralizing ability against these variants, especially in people who have not received booster doses.

“As a result, an increasing number of reinfections are occurring,” the researchers wrote, “even though these cases tend to be milder than in infections of immunologically naA-ve individuals”.

The recent scientific studies in this area have been led by the labs of David Veesler, associate professor of biochemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, and Davide Corti of Humans BioMed SA of Vir Biotechnology in Switzerland.

The Omicron variants appeared at the end of 2021 and have marked genetic differences from the ancestral SARS-CoV-2.

The many, distinct mutations in their infection machinery have enabled them to escape from antibodies elicited from the original series of vaccines, from a history of infection, or from both of those two immune-system training events.

People who had a breakthrough infection after vaccination also produced neutralizing antibodies against these variants in the mucus lining the inside of their noses.

However, people who only received the vaccine did not generate antibodies in their nasal mucosa.

“This finding lends support to efforts to develop and evaluate next-generation Covid vaccines that could be delivered intranasally as the nose is generally the site where the virus first enters the body,” said the scientists.

The lead authors of the paper are from the Veesler lab, the Corti lab, and Washington University in St. Louis.

Cold weather might be behind India’s poor fielding display, indicates Bhuvneshwar

0

One of the reasons for India’s poor fielding display in the narrow five-wicket loss to South Africa in the ICC T20 World Cup Super-12 game on Sunday could be the cold conditions, which might have played a role in Virat Kohli dropping a sitter and captain Rohit Sharma missing an underarm direct hit at stumps on the striker’s end.

India seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar conceded that the weather conditions were “very difficult” but stopped short of saying they played a role in the defeat.

“It (cold weather) was very difficult. But honestly, we never talked about that. We knew that we would have to cope with those conditions. And we can’t change those things. We have to go through these conditions or the cold in the next matches. So, the same thing in Melbourne. But we never talked about that it’s going to be cold or whatever the condition is,” said Bhuvneshwar.

When Aiden Markram and David Miller were shifting gears in the second half of chasing 134, India had some chances to pull themselves back on the field. But the 2007 T20 World champions let go of chances on offer through costly lapses in the field.

Markram had a huge slice of luck at 35 when a juggling Virat Kohli dropped a simple catch at deep mid-wicket in the 12th over. In the next over, as Miller called for a tight single, Markram had another reprieve when skipper Rohit Sharma missed an underarm direct hit at stumps on the striker’s end.

Sandwiched between the two chances shelved by India, was their batting hero Suryakumar Yadav missing the stumps at the striker’s end as Miller called for a quick single. A few overs later, as Markram’s pull fell between two leg-side fielders in the deep, he got to his fifty in 37 balls and shared a 76-run stand off 60 balls with Miller.

Asked if there was a particular moment in the second innings where he felt the momentum was shifting away from India after such a strong start with the ball, where South Africa was reduced to 24/3 in 5.3 overs, Bhuvneshwar said the dropped catches cost the team two full points.

“The catches we dropped, or the misses, I think that’s where — not the moment specifically (where India lost the momentum). But we knew if we could have got those chances, things could have been different. But I think there wasn’t any particular moment where we can say that things shifted towards their side,” said Bhuvneshwar.

On the question of whether India has changed its strategy in the T20 World Cup by deciding to bat first after winning the toss, quite opposite to the strategy in the sub-continent where they bowl first, Bhuvneshwar said, batting first was the right strategy in Australia where conditions are different.

“I think that’s a beautiful strategy (batting first). If you’re playing in the subcontinent you generally try to chase and do all those things. But in Australia, things are — look, it keeps changing from ground to ground, city to city. If you look at us, we batted first because we knew chasing is not an easy task, especially in Perth. It could be different in the next city. But like you said, batting first or second wouldn’t make much difference, like (in the) sub-continent.”

Verstappen claims record 14th victory of 2022 season in Mexico; breaks Schumacher, Vettel record

0

Dutch Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen made history as he beat Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton to claim his 14th victory of the 2022 season in the Mexican Grand Prix after an intriguing strategic battle at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez here on Sunday.

Verstappen, who has already clinched the world title, finished ahead of former world champion and fiercest rival Hamilton and Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez.

It secures another record for the young Dutchman, as he now boasts the most wins in a single F1 campaign, moving one clear of the 13 achieved by Germany’s Michael Schumacher (2004) and Sebastian Vettel (2013).

Verstappen, whose Red Bull team opted for a soft-medium tyre strategy, took the chequered flag some 15 seconds ahead of Hamilton, who was left to question why Mercedes swapped their starting set of mediums for hard tires, according to formula1.com.

Perez gave the home fans something to cheer about in third, having threatened to challenge Hamilton late on, while Mercedes’ George Russell — who lost out to his team-mate at the start — took a distant fourth.

Russell was also unhappy with his strategy, repeatedly asking Mercedes to pit again and ditch the hard tyres, which failed to bring the race back to the Silver Arrows in the closing stages — a stop for soft tyres with two laps to run at least yielding the fastest lap.

Ferrari endured a lackluster race as Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc claimed distant P5 and P6 finishes, ahead of McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo, who charged his way to seventh with soft tyres late on and kept the position despite a 10-second time penalty for a clash with Yuki Tsunoda.

Esteban Ocon placed eighth, after a late retirement for Alpine team-mate Fernando Alonso, as the other McLaren of Lando Norris and Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas — not quite able to repeat his qualifying performance — completed the points.

AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly picked up a five-second penalty for an early, aggressive move on Aston Martin rival Lance Stroll and ultimately missed out on a point by just half a second, with Alex Albon 12th for Williams.

Zhou Guanyu got his Alfa Romeo to the line ahead of Aston Martin pair Vettel and Stroll, followed by the Haas cars of Mick Schumacher and Kevin Magnussen.

Nicholas Latifi was the final finisher in his Williams.
