Audiences should call out bad films, says Kamal Haasan

Stating that fans had a great responsibility, actor Kamal Haasan said that they must make it a point to call good films good and bad films bad.

Speaking at the audio launch event of director Prabhu Solomon’s ‘Sembi’, featuring Kovai Sarala and Ashwin in the titular roles, Kamal Haasan said: “During those days while seeking a chance, I would carry a photo album with my pics from the film ’16 Vayadhinile’.

“I would keep showing it to people saying, ‘I am acting in this film as its hero’. Some would have good words to say. There were others who would say, ‘Don’t you feel ashamed carrying a book in which you have a picture of yourself in a loin cloth?’ I remember all those words today when one of the speakers here praised me saying I attend the audio launches of both big and small films.”

“One cannot decide which is a big film or a small film from here,” he said, and then pointing to the audience, he added: “They are the ones who decide.”

“If we are talking about ’16 Vayathinile’, remembering it after almost 40 years after it was made, then that is what is a big film. There are times when we struggle to remember the name of a film, saying, ‘What was that film that was made for so many crores?’ That is a small film,” he explained.

Stating that he had watched ‘Sembi’, Kamal Haasan called it a good film. “The core point the film looks to make is good. I have seen this film. Our silence is the biggest danger. When you don’t question people committing mistakes as to why they are doing so, the mistakes will continue. This film says that and that is why I like this film. It reminds us all that we have a duty.”

The actor then told the audience: “As fans, you too have a great responsibility and duty, you must call good films good and bad films bad. You must do that boldly and without fear.”

The event was attended by a host of dignitaries including the cast and crew of the film.

Vienna Open: Medvedev marches into final with win over Dimitrov

0

World No. 4 Daniil Medvedev marched into the final of the Vienna Open after downing Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-2 in their semifinal clash, here on Saturday.

The 26-year-old came up against a confident opponent striking the ball cleanly but the top seed had all the answers. Just as it had against Jannik Sinner in Friday’s quarterfinals, Medvedev’s relentless retrieving and precise serving proved the difference as he charged to an 85-minute victory to reach the championship match in Vienna for the first time.

“It was a great match. There were a few moments in the match where I thought I should have done just a little bit better, to go in front earlier and try to build the pressure earlier. Then I managed to stay consistent and, in the most important points, managed to raise my level. That was enough today, and I’m really happy with my level,” said Medvedev.

Dimitrov had hit his stride en route to the semifinals in Vienna, where he was particularly impressive in taking out third seed Andrey Rublev in the second round. Yet despite hitting 21 winners to Medvedev’s 17, he could not penetrate the top seed’s defenses frequently enough to gain a strong foothold in the match.

As it had in his previous wins against Nikoloz Basilashvili, Dominic Thiem, and Sinner this week in Vienna, Medvedev was dialed in on serve against Dimitrov. He won 87 percent (27/31) of points behind his first delivery to improve his ATP head-to-head series record against the Bulgarian to 4-2.

“The serve is probably the most important shot in tennis. I was lacking it a little bit this season, I was making too many double faults, sometimes in important moments my serve could have been a little bit better,” the Russian tennis player said.

“I was working a lot with my coach to try and find this rhythm (again), and so far I’m serving well here. I’m really happy about it and that’s also why I’m playing so well,” he added.

Medvedev, who is yet to drop his serve this week across four matches in Vienna, will face Denis Shapovalov or Borna Coric in Sunday’s final as he chases his second tour-level title of the season.

The 14-time tour-level titlist is currently fifth in the ATP Live Race To Turin as he bids to qualify for November’s ATP Finals for the fourth consecutive year.

Momentum created by beating India will help in series v Ireland: Pak pacer Fatima Sana

0

Young Pakistan women’s team pace bowler Fatima Sana believes the momentum created by defeating India in the ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup recently in Bangladesh will give her side the confidence to go into the six-match white-ball series against Ireland at home with an extremely positive mindset.

Pakistan’s pace bowling has been boosted by the return of Sana. The 20-year-old quickly regained her fitness after missing out on the T20 Asia Cup due to an ankle injury sustained during the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) while representing Barbados Royals. Pakistan, though, will be without their fast bowler Diana Baig ruled out of the series due to a shoulder injury.

The Ireland women’s team, embarking on their maiden tour to Pakistan, is due to arrive in Lahore on Sunday. The teams will feature in six limited-overs matches — three ODIs, part of the ICC Women’s Championship, and three T20Is from November 4-16 at the Gaddafi Stadium here.

“It was great to see the team’s momentum in the ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup (in Bangladesh). The way we defeated India helped me gain confidence when I joined the squad for the pre-series camp against Ireland,” said Sana on Saturday.

“It is great to see Ireland coming here for the first time, we will try to keep our winning momentum going in the forthcoming series as well,” said Sana, who made her debut in the 2019 series against South Africa in South Africa. She has so far featured in 25 ODIs, taking 36 wickets, with 5/39 as her best match figure, which came against West Indies in Antigua in 2019. In 15 T20Is, she has 12 dismissals to her name, with three for 27 as her career-best.

On her bowling partnership with Diana, who is not on the side, Fatima said, “I have a good combination with Danny (Diana Baig). The side will surely miss Diana, but we have other fast bowlers in the side who are good enough to challenge the Irish side.”

Fatima, who bagged the ICC Emerging Cricketer of the Year award in 2021, while sharing her thoughts on the significance of playing at home, said, “When I was a net bowler, I always used to wonder when I will get an opportunity to play and represent my country. My message to young U19 and emerging players will be to come out and support your team and witness how overseas players approach the game.”

The ODI and T20I squads are currently undergoing a five-day pre-series camp at the National High-Performance Centre in Lahore ahead of the Ireland assignment.

Itinerary: ODIs – Nov 4, 6, and 9. T20Is – Nov 12, 14, 16.

T20 World Cup: Phillips, Boult lead New Zealand to commanding 65-run victory over Sri Lanka

0

Middle-order batter Glenn Phillips slammed a magnificent century while left-arm fast bowler Trent Boult picked four wickets in career-best figures to lead New Zealand to a commanding 65-run victory over Sri Lanka in their Group 1 match of Super 12 stage in the T20 World Cup at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

After Phillips made 104 off 64 balls, laced with 10 fours and four sixes, and shared an 84-run stand with Daryl Mitchell to lift New Zealand from 15/3 to 163/7, Boult and Tim Southee reduced Sri Lanka to 8/4 in 3.3 overs. Though Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Dasun Shanaka threatened with some big hits, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 102 in 19.2 overs.

Saturday’s victory now sees New Zealand at the top of the table in Group 1 with five points in three matches and edge one step closer to sealing a place in the semifinals. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, stays on two points from three matches. The 65-run victory is also New Zealand’s biggest winning margin against Sri Lanka in terms of runs in T20Is.

Electing to bat first, New Zealand was in trouble in the powerplay, losing openers Finn Allen, Devon Conway (dismissed by Maheesh Theekshana), and Kane Williamson (falling to Kasun Rajitha), leaving New Zealand at 15/3 in four overs.

A partnership of 84 was then built by Glenn Phillips and a returning Mitchell (22 off 24 balls), getting New Zealand out of trouble. After steadying the ship, Phillips then upped his strike rate, smashing some brilliant shots as Sri Lanka was hugely hampered by indisciplined bowling and poor fielding, including dropped catches.

Eventually, Phillips, after being dropped twice by the Sri Lanka fielders on 12 and 45, brought up his second T20I hundred, scoring a breathtaking 104 off only 64 balls, hitting 10 fours and four massive sixes in his brilliant knock. He was also well-supported by Mitchell Santner (11 not out) at the end as New Zealand fetched a whopping 113 runs off the last 10 overs.

In reply, the New Zealand-experienced fast-bowling duo of Southee and Boult bamboozled Sri Lanka’s top four in 3.3 overs, which soon became 58/6 in ten overs. Rajapaksa (34 off 22 balls) entertained with some big shots, while Shanaka (35 off 32 balls) also kept the maximums coming.

But the duo fell, unable to stay at the crease for as long as Sri Lanka would have liked. The New Zealand spin twins, Santner and Ish Sodhi chipped in with two wickets each, as they bowled out their opposition teams back-to-back in T20 World Cup matches for the first time and boost their chances of reaching the semifinals with a huge spike in the net run rate, now at 3.85.

Brief scores:

New Zealand 167/7 in 20 overs (Glenn Phillips 104, Daryl Mitchell 22; Kasun Rajitha 2/23, Maheesh Theekshana 1/35) beat Sri Lanka 102 all out in 19.2 overs (Dasun Shanaka 35, Bhanuka Rajapaksa 34; Trent Boult 4/13, Mitchell Santner 2/21) by 65 runs.

Employees not forced to resign, it’s part of 5% workforce reduction: BYJU’s

0

Amid reports of forcing its employees to resign, edtech major BYJU’s said on Saturday that it is not forcing its staff in Karnataka or elsewhere to resign or face terminations, and the whole exercise is part of the 5 percent reduction in its 50,000-strong workforce as announced earlier.

Earlier this month, BYJU’s announced the reduction of 5 percent of its 50,000-strong workforce (about 2,500 people), which will be “rationalized across product, content, media, and technology teams in a phased manner” in a bid to consolidate its India business.

The Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU) has claimed that BYJU’s, after Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, is now forcing employees to resign at its Bengaluru headquarters.

“It is absolutely false that BYJU is forcing employees to resign. BYJU’s is a responsible organization and follows all the laws of the land. BYJU’S employs nearly 50,000 people across India. Around 5 percent, or 2,500, of these positions, are being rationalized as part of the current strategic plan to grow profitably and sustainably,” the tech unicorn told media.

The company also said that each employee affected by the restructuring is being informed individually.

“BYJU’S is providing all of them a progressive exit package, including extended family health insurance benefits, outplacement services, fast-track full-and-final settlement on demand and the provision of ‘garden leave’, where they can look for jobs while on BYJU’S payroll,” a company spokesperson said.

Earlier, the tech unicorn had decided to shut operations at the Technopark campus in Thiruvananthapuram following which the employees approached the state labor department.

Around 140 employees from the 170-strong workforce at Technopark have been asked to leave. BYJY’s has nearly 3,000 employees in Kerala.

The company said it will be strengthening its presence in the state going forward.

“All these employees will also be offered an assured path to return to BYJU’s in case they are unable to find a job in the next 12 months,” it added.

The company said that in an ongoing organizational restructuring for profitable growth, “BYJU’S is making every attempt to offer relevant relocation opportunities to the affected employees”.

“In this regard, while we are discontinuing part of our Thiruvananthapuram operations to reduce redundancy, we are also offering the entire team at Technopark an opportunity to relocate to Bengaluru,” it added.

BYJU’S also said that it will add three more offices in the state in the present financial year, taking the total number to 14 besides increasing the number of employees in Kerala from 3,000 to nearly 3,600.

French Open badminton: Carolina Marin beats Yamaguchi to reach women’s singles final

0

Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist Carolina Marin defeated reigning two-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi 21-14, 21-18 to reach the women’s singles final at the French Open 2022 badminton tournament, here on Saturday.

Marin, who needed 47 minutes to defeat Japan’s Yamaguchi in the semifinal, will face the winner between China’s He Bing Jiao and Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying, in the final.

After recovering from an ACL injury that prevented her from defending her Olympic title in Tokyo, the Spaniard won the European Championships crown in April. On Sunday, she will seek title number 35 of her career.

It will be for the first time in two years that the 29-year-old will play a final of a World Tour Super 750 tournament. The last time she played a final of a BWF World Tour Super 750 tournament was in Odense, Denmark, in October 2020.

In her best victory since returning to the circuit, Marin dominated throughout, varying direction and pace of play toward an increasingly exhausted opponent.

Yamaguchi had halted Marin’s progress to the podium at recent tournaments, including August’s World Cup in Tokyo, but this time she beat the circuit’s form player.

Telangana High Court stays probe in ‘MLAs poaching’ case

0

The Telangana High Court on Saturday stayed the ongoing investigation into the ‘MLAs poaching’ case till further orders.

A single-judge bench of the court passed the interim orders on a petition by the BJP seeking a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the alleged attempt to buy four MLAs of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS)

Justice B. Vijaysen Reddy asked the state government and other respondents to file the counter by November 4.

Petitioner’s counsel Rachna Reddy said the court deferred the investigation temporarily until further orders of the court.

She said since the TRS leaders were taking BJP’s name in the case without prima facie or circumstantial evidence, the petitioner approached the High Court seeking transfer of the case to CBI for an impartial investigation.

The judge made it clear that his order is only for a few days and hence not in conflict with the order passed by another single judge allowing the remand of the accused.

Earlier, Justice S. Sumalatha set aside the order of a lower court rejecting the remand of the three accused. The judge asked the lower court to remand the accused to judicial custody upon their production by the police.

Justice Chillakur Sumalatha passed the orders on a criminal revision petition filed by the Cyberabad police seeking to set aside the ACB special court judge’s order rejecting the remand of the accused.

The First Additional Special Judge for SPE and ACB Cases had rejected the remand application when the accused were presented before him late on Thursday night. The judge observed that the police failed to comply with the mandatory procedure of issuing notices to the accused under section 41A of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Challenging this order, the Cyberabad police approached the High Court. The High Court judge observed the lower court did not take into consideration the Supreme Court judgment about notices under section 41 of CrPC. The judge noted that if the investigating officer feels that there is no need for issuing notice, he can act accordingly.

A couple of hours after this order, Cyberabad police arrested Ramachandra Bharathi alias Satish Sharma, Kore Nanda Kumar alias Nandu and Simhayaji.

The three accused, allegedly to be BJP agents, were arrested by the police from a farmhouse at Moinabad near Hyderabad on the night of October 26 when they were allegedly trying to lure four MLAs of TRS with offers of huge money.

Cyberabad police conducted the raid on a tip-off by Pilot Rohit Reddy, one of the MLAs. He alleged that the accused offered Rs 100 crore to him and Rs 50 crore each to three others.

The accused were booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

French Open badminton: Satwik-Chirag reach men’s doubles final with win over Choi-Kim

0

India’s Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy stormed into the men’s doubles final at the French Open 2022 badminton tournament after beating South Korea’s Choi Sol Gyu and Kim Won Ho 21-18, 21-14 in the semifinals, here on Saturday.

Chirag and Satwiksairaj, the seventh seeds, will face either Chinese Taipei’s Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han or English duo Ben Lane and Sean Vendy in what will be their second-ever BWF Super 750 final as a team.

The first incidentally came at the 2019 French Open, where the Indian duo lost the title decider to Indonesian aces Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.

Chasing their second BWF World Tour of the year after the Super 500 India Open triumph earlier this year, the Indian pair were the early aggressors and looked to test the South Korean team’s defensive chops from the get-go.

The attacking intent paid off as Chirag and Satwiksairaj kept their noses ahead throughout the game and took the lead in the contest.

Choi Sol Gyu and Kim Won Ho, who made the final of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament recently, tried to engage the Indian pair, currently the world No. 8 in the men’s doubles world badminton rankings, to longer rallies in the second game in a bid to disturb their momentum.

But with Chirag dominating the net and front court area brilliantly, the South Korean duo found very little joy and the Indians wrapped up the match in 45 minutes.

Young working professionals now at high stroke risk: Study

0

A team of researchers has found a sharp increase in the incidence of stroke in young adults, especially among working professionals.

Among young people who had a stroke, there was a significant increase in the proportion who were in more skilled occupations, particularly for professional or managerial jobs.

This could suggest a role for work-related stress, low physical activity, and long working hours, each of which was more strongly associated with the risk of stroke than a heart attack.

The findings from the study published in the journal JAMA on ‘World Stroke Day 2022’, which analyzed the rate of new stroke cases in Oxfordshire in the UK over the last 20 years, reflect emerging evidence that young stroke is a growing problem in high-income countries.

“Establishing the importance of known risk factors in young stroke will help to raise general awareness of the need for better control. We also need better ways of identifying young people at high risk of stroke, as current risk models are based on predictors of stroke in older people,” said Medical Research Foundation Fellow, Dr. Linxin Li, from the University of Oxford.

Stroke is a major health problem that can have devastating consequences. It happens when the blood supply to the brain is cut off, causing the death of brain cells and dysfunction in one or more parts of the brain.

The restricted blood supply can be the result of an artery supplying blood to the brain becoming blocked, a blood vessel rupturing causing a bleed inside the brain, or a brief reduction in the blood supply to the brain.

The traditional view is that vascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity, play a minor role in young stroke, but recent studies have begun to contradict this view.

Dr. Li’s research focuses on multiple types of stroke, such as ischaemic strokes, caused by a blockage of arteries, ‘mini-strokes’ (transient ischaemic attacks), and bleeding in the brain (intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage).

The researchers found that between 2002-2010 and 2010-2018, there was a 67 percent increase in stroke incidence among younger adults (under 55 years), and a 15 percent decrease among older adults (55 years or older).

A similar divergence in incidence was not found for other vascular events, such as heart attacks.

“Historically, we’ve thought of stroke as only affecting older adults, but studies like this suggest a growing problem in young adults,” said Dr. Angela Hind, Chief Executive of the Medical Research Foundation.

“Stroke in young adults can have a huge impact, often occurring when they are starting a family or already have young children to look after, and have yet to reach the peak of their careers. The economic, social, and personal consequences can be devastating,” Hind added.

Twitter in ‘sane hands’ but can’t be successful without me: Trump

Former US President Donald Trump has hailed Elon Musk for acquiring Twitter for $44 billion, saying the micro-blogging platform is now in “sane hands”.

He, however, did not reveal on his own social media platform called ‘Truth Social’ that he wishes to make a comeback on the platform which banned him after the Capitol Hill riots in January 2021.

“I am very happy that Twitter is now in sane hands, and will no longer be run by Radical Left Lunatics and Maniacs that truly hate our country,” Trump said in a post.

In an interview with Fox News Digital on Friday, he said: “I like Elon and I wish him a lot of luck. I hope he does well with it.”

However, the 76-year-old real estate magnate added that “I don’t think Twitter can be successful without me”.

The ‘Chief Twit’ Musk has said that he will reinstate Trump’s account on Twitter and has announced forming a content moderation council for such decisions.

Trump has over four million users on Truth Social, which he founded in October last year.

Truth Social resurfaced on Google Play Store earlier this month after the tech giant banned it in August over failing to meet its policies.

The platform agreed to enforce content moderation measures on users.

It is now available to more than 44 percent of smartphone users in the US who are on Android.

Musk called the Truth Social app as a “Trumpet” of a “right-wing echo chamber”.

The Tesla CEO said that he bought Twitter in order to avoid the site becoming a counterpart to Truth Social.

Global smartphone market sinks to lowest Q3 level since 2014

0

The global smartphone market declined by 12 percent (year-on-year) even as it grew by 2 percent (on-quarter) to reach 301 million units in Q3, its lowest Q3 level since 2014.

According to Counterpoint Research, the smartphone market remained under pressure given deteriorating economic conditions.

Ongoing international political tensions resulting in economic uncertainty hit the smartphone market, even though it reversed its slide below the 300-million-mark last quarter thanks to a slight quarterly recovery in Apple and Samsung shipments, according to the report.

“Russia’s escalating war in Ukraine, ongoing China-US political distrust and tensions, growing inflationary pressures across regions, a growing fear of recession, and weakening national currencies all caused a further dent in consumer sentiment, hitting already weakened demand,” explained a senior analyst Harmeet Singh Walia.

Apple was the only brand among the top-five players to grow 2 percent YoY, increasing its market share by two percentage points to 16 percent.

Samsung’s shipments declined by 8 percent YoY but grew 5 percent QoQ to reach 64 million, thanks to record pre-sales of its premium fold and flip smartphones, compared with the same quarter last year.

Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo, recovered slightly after receiving heavy beatings due to lockdowns in China in Q2, and as they captured more of the market ceded by Apple and Samsung’s exit from Russia.

“With the full force of the latest iPhone launch being felt in Q4, we expect further quarterly improvement in the coming quarter, although central banks’ attempts to control inflation will further reduce consumer demand,” said associate director Jan Stryjak.

However, shipments are unlikely to reach last year’s levels, let alone pre-pandemic Q4 levels of over 400 million units.

“Looking further ahead into 2023, we expect sluggish demand with lengthening replacement rates, especially in the first half of the year,” Stryjak added.

Google to run Meet on multiple platforms, including Zoom

0

Google has announced to run Meet on multiple platforms including Zoom, later this year.

Zoom Rooms and Google Meet devices will both be able to join Google Meet meetings, either directly from the calendar of a Zoom Room or Google Meet device or by entering a meeting code, the company said in a blog post.

On all ChromeOS-based Meet devices, Zoom interop will be available, and support for more items will come later.

On all platforms, Google Meet interop will be enabled in all Zoom Rooms. Interop for registered devices can be enabled by administrators, allowing trusted devices to join cross-platform calls without knocking.

“In the hybrid workplace, organizations are struggling to connect their conference rooms to colleagues in different organizations due to platform interoperability challenges,” the company said.

“To help overcome this, we have been working to give customers as much flexibility as possible to connect with people within and outside their networks,” it added.

The first two video conferencing partners to offer Meet for Android-based appliances will be Poly and Logitech.

Customers who already own Android-based Poly or Logitech devices will be able to utilize their investment and switch to Meet by simply purchasing a Meet license for these devices.

Upset over poor returns, Guj farmers distribute garlic for free

0

Upset over a sharp fall in garlic prices in the open market as well as in the Agriculture Producer Market Committee (APMC), the farmers are distributing their products for free among the poor.

On Saturday, Gujarat Kisan Sangathan will distribute 4000 kilograms of garlic in Gandhinagar.

Gujarat Kisan Sangathan state president Gajendrasinh Zala told IANS that per acre garlic production cost comes to Rs 37,100 and the per acre garlic yield is 3000 kilograms. Today, the market rate of garlic has crashed with 20 kilograms costing just Rs 150. So, the farmer is hardly earning Rs 22.50 for crops harvested on one acre of land.

His grievances are that farmers are making a net loss of Rs 14,600 per acre. The farmers’ long-pending demand that the state and central government announce MSP for horticulture crops too, also have fallen on deaf ears. Sadly, even when the market prices are crashing, the governments are not stepping in to help.

If in this season, the farmers don’t fetch good prices, the cultivation in December will be comparatively less, this will lead to a shortage next year, creating other problems, he said.

According to the State Horticulture Director’s official data in the year 2021-22, farmers had cultivated garlic on 26,013 hectares of land and the production was 2,02,828 Metric tons.

Reacting to the crisis, Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel told mediapersons in Rajkot that as it is a central government subject, he will take up the matter with the Centre to fix MSP for garlic.

Expressing shock over the protest, Gujarat State Cooperative Marketing Federation (GujCOMasol) chairman Dilip Sanghani assured the farmers of finding out a solution by producing value-added products and manufacturing them so that the farmers don’t have to sell their produce at a throwaway price.

‘Configuration change’ behind global Instagram outage: Meta

0

Meta has announced that ‘Configuration change’ was the reason behind the global Instagram outage.

The company said that it has fixed the issue that briefly made Instagram and Facebook inaccessible for some users, reports The Verge.

When trying to load either site on a desktop browser or display, affected users encountered errors such as “page not available” or “feed not refreshing”.

But there were some users that were not impacted and were able to load all of Meta’s services without any problems.

Thousands of users from many parts of India and the world reported problems with the application.

On Downdetector, an online platform that provides users with real-time information about the status of various websites and services, over 900 users in India reported issues in accessing Instagram.

Many users took to the microblogging platform Twitter to report the issue.

“Instagram freezes using Google Chrome browser. Cannot see stories or open users’ pages. It keeps loading,” an Instagram user said in a tweet.

“Everything quit working. Force closed and cleared cache. Even restarted my phone. Can’t see notifications. Can’t reply to comments,” another user commented.

During the last Instagram outage which occurred in September, nearly 34,000 users reported having trouble accessing the platform.
