PKL 9: It’s important for me to guide the youngsters in our team, says Fazel Atrachali

0

Puneri Paltan pulled off a dramatic 26-25 victory against Telugu Titans in the vivo Pro Kabaddi League Season 9 at the Shree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

Aslam Inamdar needed to effect a raid under immense pressure and he managed to do so in the last second of the match to help his team earn a crucial victory.

Speaking about the match, Puneri Paltan Captain Fazel Atrachali said, “We have a young team so it’s my responsibility to guide the players on the mat. The last five minutes of the match were very tricky for us and I wanted to control every move we were making during that time. Therefore, I kept giving tips to each of my players. If we made one mistake, we could’ve been on the wrong end of the result.”

Atrachali also expressed, “It was a very tough game for us. We made a lot of mistakes, but we won in the end, which is the most important thing. And we are happy to clinch the win and take 5 points. It doesn’t matter who is the star performer in our team as long as Puneri Paltan is winning.”

The Jaipur Pink Panthers on the other hand continued their brilliant form as they defeated Bengal Warriors 39-24 on Tuesday. When asked about their tremendous form, Jaipur Captain Sunil Kumar said, “We’ve been playing quite well in the competition, having won four matches in a row. The Bengal raiders are good at picking up bonus points so we devised a strategy to make it difficult for them to pick up bonus points against us.”

Sunil also said that his team will have to prepare well for their next challenge against Telugu Titans on 22 October, “The Telugu Titans have a good set of players. They can come back in form anytime. There are big names on the team, such as Surjeet Singh, Vishal Bhardwaj, and Parvesh Bhainswal. It’ll be a good match and we have to prepare very well for the game.”

T20 World Cup: Raza takes three for 19 as West Indies make 153/7 against Zimbabwe

0

Sikandar Raza starred with a brilliant spell of 3/19, triggering a West Indies collapse as the two-time champions set a 154-run target for Zimbabwe in a must-win Group B match in the first round of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at Bellerive Oval on Wednesday.

Electing to bat first, West Indies started well despite losing Kyle Mayers in the fourth over, top-edging a pull to the keeper off Blessing Muzarabani. Johnson Charles (45) and Evin Lewis (15) shared a vital 49-run stand off 38 balls to get the innings back on track.

But Zimbabwe’s introduction of Raza from the seventh over triggered a West Indies meltdown in the middle order. The off-spin all-rounder had his first scalp in the tenth over when Lewis holed out to long-on. Captain Nicholas Pooran was next to depart, falling to Sean Williams, chipping back a simple catch to the bowler.

West Indies were then dealt with a severe blow when Charles departed for 45 after a mix-up with Rovman Powell, resulting in a run-out. Raza added more misery when he trapped Shamrah Brooks lbw and took a superb catch off a Jason Holder chip on his own bowling to end with 3/19 in his four overs.

Struggling at 101/6, a late flourish from Powell (28 off 21 balls, including two sixes in the final over) and Akeal Hosein (23 not out off 18 balls) allowed the West Indies to cross the 150-mark, after losing their way in the middle post a strong start.

Brief Scores:

West Indies 153/7 in 20 overs (Johnson Charles 45, Rovman Powell 28; Sikandar Raza 3/19, Blessing Muzarabani 2/38) against Zimbabwe

PCB indicates moving Asia Cup venue may impact Pakistan’s visit to India for 2023 ODI World Cup

0

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday indicated that the possibility of moving the venue for next year’s Asia Cup could “impact” Pakistan’s visit to India for the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup, as well as future ICC events in India in the 2024-31 cycle.

PCB further said that the comments made by Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president and BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Tuesday over shifting next year’s Asia Cup to a neutral venue as India would not travel to Pakistan were noted with “surprise and disappointment”.

“The comments were made without any discussion or consultation with the Board of the Asian Cricket Council or the Pakistan Cricket Board (event host) and without any thoughts towards their long-term consequences and implications.

“After having presided over the ACC meeting during which Pakistan was awarded the ACC Asia Cup with an overwhelming support and response from the ACC Board Members, Mr Shah’s statement of shifting of the ACC Asia Cup has clearly been made unilaterally,” said the PCB in an official statement.

The 2023 edition of the Asia Cup, to be held in the 50-over format, had been allotted to Pakistan as per the ICC’s Future Tours Programme (FTP).

“This is contrary to the philosophy and spirit for which the Asian Cricket Council was formed in September 1983 — a united Asian cricket body to safeguard the interests of its Members and organize, develop, and promote the game of cricket in Asia.

“The overall impact of such statements have the potential to split the Asian and international cricketing communities, and can impact Pakistan’s visit to India for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and future ICC Events in India in the 2024-2031 cycle,” added the PCB.

PCB also said it has requested an emergency meeting of the ACC board to discuss the matter. “The PCB has to date not received any official communication from the ACC on the statement of the ACC President. As such, the PCB has written to the Asian Cricket Council to convene an emergency meeting of its Board as soon as practically possible on this important and sensitive matter.”

Earlier, on Tuesday, the BCCI after the end of their Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai, arrived at a conclusion that it will not travel to its neighboring country for the tournament and demanded that the tournament be moved to a neutral venue.

“Neutral venue for the Asia Cup is not unprecedented and we have decided that we will not travel to Pakistan,” Shah, who is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. “I have decided that we will play at a neutral venue,” he added.

Notably, the 2022 edition of the Asia Cup, held in the T20 format, was also played in a neutral venue after an economic and political crisis engulfed the host nation, Sri Lanka. The tournament was then held in UAE, where Sri Lanka emerged as the champions after beating Pakistan in the final in Dubai.

New Congress president will decide my role: Rahul

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that he will report to the new Congress president who will decide his role in the party.

He told reporters at Adoni during Bharat Jodo Yatra that the Congress president will be the final authority and he will decide how the party is going to move forward.

“He will decide what will be my role and how I am to be deployed,” the Congress MP said before the announcement of the result of the AICC presidential election.

He declined to answer queries on the role of the president, saying the new president would comment on it.

“As far as the Congress party is concerned, the president will be the final authority. We will have a new Congress president who will decide how the Congress party moves forward,” Rahul said.

“Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge and Mr. Shashi Tharoor are both people with experience and understanding. Whoever gets elected they do not need advice from me. They have experience and understanding and they will decide what to do,” he added.

To another query, Rahul said he would report to the Congress president. “Obviously. In the Congress party, the president is the supreme authority and every Congress member reports to that person.”

When asked about the allegation by Shashi Tharoor’s team about irregularities in AICC presidential election in Uttar Pradesh, he said the Election Commission of the party would look into it.

“We are the only political party in the country that holds elections. We are also the only political party that has an election commission inside it. We have a T.N. Seshan kind of person. I worked with Mistry Ji (Congress’ Central Election Authority chairman Madhusudan Mistry). He is an absolutely straightforward, solid person. Whatever issues are there will be addressed to the election commission. It will take a decision whether there were irregularities or not,” Rahul said.

He also claimed that the Congress party is the only party with an institutional framework to address such issues.

Rahul wondered why questions were not asked other parties about their internal election. “Everybody asks questions about elections to the Congress party president. I am proud that the Congress party has had an open and transparent process. Why is nobody interested in elections in other parties? Why does nobody ask a question? Why isn’t there an election in the BJP why isn’t there an election in the regional parties? Nobody seems to be interested in asking the question.”

Google to alert parents when their kids leave school

0

Google has announced new updates to Family Link, which offer a range of options and help keep families safer online.

The new updates have already been rolled out and will be completed over the next few weeks.

In a new update to the “Location tab”, parents can see all of their children on the same map with their device location. Also, parents can turn on notifications to be alerted when their child arrives at or leaves a specific destination like school or soccer practice, the company said in a blog post.

Moreover, the “Highlights tab” will allow the parents to track the usage of their child’s device by showing a snapshot of their child’s app usage, screen time, and recently installed apps.

“We’re also adding resources from trusted partners like Common Sense Media, ConnectSafely, and the Family Online Safety Institute to help parents navigate conversations around online safety at home,” the company added.

For parents and children, Family Link will also be available on the web. With this, parents will be able to access online features even when they are away from their phones or don’t have the app.

For children, the Family Link web experience will help them better understand their parental control settings.

Additionally, the “Controls tab” enables parents to monitor children with the ability to set screen time limits for individual devices or specific apps, as well as set content restrictions.

Kharge elected new Congress President

Mallikarjun Kharge was on Wednesday elected as the new Congress President after he received 7,897 votes, while his rival Shashi Tharoor managed to secure only 1,072.

Although the counting of votes has ended, official results are yet to be announced.

A total of 416 votes were declared invalid.

Kharge’s supporters broke out in dance and burst crackers outside the AICC headquarters here.

He is likely to take charge next week a day after Diwali (October 23).

For the first in over two decades, Congress will get a non-Gandhi President.

T20 World Cup: Start of India’s warm-up match against New Zealand delayed due to rain

0

The start of India’s second warm-up match against New Zealand in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at The Gabba on Wednesday has been delayed due to rain.

“It’s raining here at The Gabba currently. Cut-off time for a 5 over-a-side game is 8.46 PM (4.16 PM IST),” tweeted the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Earlier, the rain had washed out the practice match between Pakistan and Afghanistan at the same venue and the weather forecast has not improved since then.

India had defeated defending champions Australia by six runs in their first warm-up match at The Gabba on Monday. The fifties from KL Rahul (57) and Suryakumar Yadav (50) helped India post a challenging 186/7 in their 20 overs.

In reply, with Australia needing 16 runs off the last two overs, Harshal Patel conceded only five runs in a superb 19th over and picked up the wicket of captain Aaron Finch, who top-scored with a 54-ball 76, apart from a brilliant run-out of Tim David by Virat Kohli’s direct hit.

Mohammed Shami was then a surprise pick to bowl the final over after having not bowled in the entire match and made his mark by having Pat Cummins caught at long-on, thanks to a phenomenal one-handed catch by Kohli at long-on.

Shami then nailed his last two yorkers right and knocked over Josh Inglis and Kane Richardson to seal a narrow win for India in a final over where four wickets fell, including Ashton Agar in a run-out.

UK Home Secy, MPs raise pitch for FTA at Diwali event

0

Led by Home Secretary Suella Braverman, British MPs have raised their pitch for the India-UK Free Trade agreement at a Diwali event organized by the India Global Forum (IGF) in London.

“Building closer India-UK trade and security partnerships is of huge value to both our nations,” Braverman tweeted on Tuesday.

“There is an economic imperative for our countries to work together, which is why we are so eager to secure a trade deal,” the Indian-origin minister, who was in the eye of the storm over her controversial remarks about Indians forming the largest group of visa over-stayers, said.

Braverman’s outburst prompted India to say both nations should “honor” the “understanding” with regard to migration mobility.

Media reports also said that the deal, targeted to be signed before Diwali, was on the verge of collapse following India’s fury over comments on immigrants made by Braverman, whose Indian-origin parents emigrated to the UK in the 1960s.

“Our trade deal with India will bring our two nations even closer, building on the over 24 billion pounds of goods and services we exchanged last year,” junior Trade Minister Greg Hands said in a tweet after attending the event, which saw participation by senior parliamentarians, business leaders and diplomats.

According to official government data, India-UK bilateral trade currently stands at around 24.3 billion pounds a year and the aim is for that to be at least doubled by 2030.

“We in the @UKLabour long & hope we will get a trade deal with India & we hope the visa obstacles will be overcome,” David Lammy, Labour MP for Tottenham, wrote in a tweet

The Indian government is seeking additional work and study visas for its residents, as well as a new visa modeled after an agreement with Australia and New Zealand that permits people under the age of 35 to live in the UK for up to three years.

“I want to see our trading partnership with India go from strength to strength; @UKLabour is determined to make progress on the trade deal with India as a pro-business and pro-trade party,” Labour MP Nick Thomas-Symonds said.

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson had set the Diwali deadline for the trade deal with India, but new Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch recently said that her country was no longer working to that deadline.

According to media reports, India and the UK’s deadline for concluding an FTA may be pushed back to November due to persisting differences in migration, automobiles, and liquor tariffs.

Braverman, who was dressed in Indian attire for the celebrations, also spoke about her personal connection with India and said that “India is in her soul”.

“India is in my heart, my soul & Diwali is a magical time to celebrate Indian culture in the UK,” she tweeted.

Modi to visit Tripura on Oct 27 to ‘rejuvenate’ BJP ahead of polls

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Tripura on October 27, and this sudden one-day tour — according to the political pundits — is to rejuvenate the BJP, and also to tame the anti-incumbency factors ahead of the assembly election which is around four months away from now.

Political analysts said that in the backdrop of the anti-incumbency factors of the BJP government, the saffron party is keen to kick-start the electoral preparation with Modi’s visit as the party would take a desperate attempt to retain power in Tripura, once a Left parties’ strong bastion.

As the BJP returned to the power for the second consecutive term in Assam (2021) and Manipur (2022) — the party is keen to maintain the same tempo in Tripura.

In Tripura, the BJP is in alliance with the tribal-based party Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) came to power in the 2018 assembly polls thrashing the CPI-M-led Left parties, which governed the northeastern state for 35 years in two phases (1978-1988 and 1993-2018).

To a query, an Election Commission official said that early election to the 60-member Tripura assembly is not possible as the summary revisions of the electoral rolls are going on and the final electoral rolls would be published on January 5, 2023, with January 1 as the qualifying date of birth for inclusion of new voters.

The elections are unlikely to be held before the third week of February next year, the official told media, refusing to be named.

Political analyst and writer Sekhar Datta said that the BJP government has been facing so many anti-incumbency factors and they are not in a comfortable position to face the electoral challenge.

“The central leaders of BJP do not want to take any chance to manage all the loopholes, shortcomings, and failures of the government. That’s why they are keen to start the electoral preparations in a big way and well in advance,” Datta told the media.

To give a positive message to the people, the central leaders had all of sudden removed Biplab Kumar Deb from the chief ministerial position on May 14 and appointed then-state President and Rajya Sabha member Manik Saha as his successor.

The central and state leaders of the party are yet to disclose the reasons behind the removal of Deb from the top post.

In an apparent attempt to tame anti-incumbency and stem any discontent within its organization in Tripura, the BJP adopted its now successfully tested strategy of going in with a new face in the Assembly polls.

With the strategy of changing the chief minister ahead of polls going in its favor in Uttarakhand, the BJP’s top leaders opted for a similar change in Tripura where the BJP had less than two percent vote share before the 2018 assembly polls.

The BJP has changed five chief ministers since 2019, including in Gujarat and Karnataka.

Another political commentator Sanjib Deb said that with the visit of the Prime Minister, the ruling BJP would prepare its organizational grounds with the crucial assembly polls in the early next year in mind.

“In less than two months of BJP President J.P. Nadda’s visit to Tripura, PM Modi’s visit is very significant as the party has already started its electoral preparations with all-out efforts,” Deb, editor of a leading Tripura daily, told to media.

However, CPI-M-led Left parties and the Congress are also preparing themselves to fight the upcoming elections, he pointed out.

Nadda during his two-day visit to Tripura in August held a series of meetings and addressed public rallies to gear up the party organizations ahead of the Assembly elections.

The BJP president as part of strengthening the organizations recently appointed former Central minister Mahesh Sharma as a central observer of Tripura replacing Vinod Sonkar while former Uttar Pradesh Minister Mahendra Singh and Rajya Sabha member Samir Oraon also appointed as election observers of the party in the poll-bound state.

Amid the preparations for the elections, a fresh controversy erupted after the BJP brought around 300 bikes and 100 Scorpio cars to Tripura from Uttar Pradesh forcing the opposition parties including the CPI-M, Trinamool Congress, and the Congress to demand a probe, alleging that the vehicles would be utilized for various “nefarious activities”.

Refuting the opposition parties’ allegations, the BJP said that around 100 bikes were brought for a state-wide campaign by the party leaders and workers.

“These bikes will be used in the Vistarak Yojana Campaign of the party aimed at establishing direct contact with the people in the state. The party members would take the BJP’s program, mission, and ideology to the doorsteps of the people,” Tripura BJP’s spokesman Nabendu Bhattacharjee told to media.

He said that the campaign would be conducted for a duration of one month to six months considering the size of the population and topography of an area.

Ranveer Singh accused of driving luxury car with expired registration

A video of Ranveer driving his favorite luxury car went viral as an online user accused the actor of driving when his license expired. The user even went on to mention the Mumbai police in his tweet and tagged them.

The user wrote: “Mumbai Police, Please take strict action on Ranveer Singh. Insurance Failed car he drove yesterday!!” The date on Ranveer’s license plate, according to the photo circulated on social media, is June 28, 2020.

The Mumbai Police replied to the user that they have notified the Mumbai Traffic police. However, the actor has not commented.

According to media reports, Ranveer’s fans started trolling the user, who made the complaint as the traffic police got the details. Upon learning that the expired license news was wrong, the user deleted his tweet and apologized to the actor on micro-blogging.

‘KBC 14’ contestant tells Big B how a train journey changed his life

A 35-year-old scriptwriter Vikram Khurrana told megastar and host Amitabh Bachchan during ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 14’ how traveling in a local train changed his perspective towards life and inspired him to be a scriptwriter.

Vikram, who hails from Mumbai, started his career in finance at an early age because of his father’s deteriorating health but while he was traveling in a local train, a moment changed him completely and he decided to change his profession.

He said: “I used to catch the train that would leave from Kandivali station at 9.02 a.m. If I missed that train, I would get an earful from my boss. Thus I would always strive to catch that train, even if there was no space inside, and I would always find myself standing at the door. At 9.02 a.m. as I was traveling to the office, I was not happy at all, there was an inner voice saying, ‘I need change'”.

He added how he realized that if he was not going to change his profession he will keep traveling on local trains only.

“There was a 14-year-old standing in front of me at the door. Behind him was an 18-year-old boy and behind him, I was there, and then behind me was a 45-year-old man. At that moment, at the doorway of a train coach, I found my whole life panned out. At 24 I was here, at 18 I traveled by the same train to college, and then at 14 to I was there. I did not want to be 45 and standing in the same place. That was the time I decided I wanted to get off the train.”

This is how Vikram decided to do something different and bigger in life. His intelligent answers and interesting story impressed Big B.

‘KBC 14’ airs on Sony Entertainment Television.

People fell at Subodh Bhave’s feet whenever he walked in as Shivaji Maharaj

Actor Subodh Bhave, who will be seen playing the role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the upcoming film Har Har Mahadev, revealed that the films unit members used to fall at his feet with respect every time he walked in on the set in the outfit of his character of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The actor said that ultimately the audience decides the fate of a film but for actors, it’s important that they preserve the sanctity of their role. He shared, “Whether you are a good actor or not, the audience decides after watching the film. But before that, the most important thing when you play a character is that you have to preserve the sanctity of the role. Acting comes later.”

He spoke about the treatment he used to receive on the film’s set, “Whenever I used to come on the set dressed as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, our director Abhijit Deshpande would come first and fall at my feet. My producers would also fall at my feet whenever they were present on the set. But they fell at the feet of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and not of Subodh Bhave.”

He added, “You should learn to respect the character you are going to play and the costume that the character wears. When you respect that outfit, you also respect the person wearing it and their thoughts”.

Har Har Mahadev’ narrates the inspirational story of a real battle that was led by Bajiprabhu, where only 300 soldiers fought off a 12000-strong enemy army and won.

Touted to be Marathi cinema’s first multilingual film, Har Har Mahadev’ has been produced by ZEE Studios and directed by Abhijeet Deshpande. The film also stars Sharad Kelkar, Amruta Khanvilkar, and Sayli Sanjeev and is set to hit the theatres on October 25, 2022.
