The Tamil Thalaivas registered their first victory of the vivo Pro Kabaddi League Season 9 after defeating Patna Pirates 33-32 at the Shree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru.
Speaking about their victory, Tamil Thalaivas’ head coach J Udaya Kumar said, “This win was quite important for us. We’ve been trying to perform well for a long time. However, I am still not satisfied. We are still repeating mistakes. The players have to learn how to deal with pressure. Hopefully, this win will start a turnaround for us.”
The head coach also expressed that the Thalaivas’ raider Narender is a future star, “Narender has been playing very well. But, I think he should play with more confidence in pressure situations. However, we can see that he’s a future star for sure.”
The Gujarat Giants will be hoping to bounce back after facing their second loss of the season after going down against Jaipur Pink Panthers. However, the UP Yoddhas’ star raider Pardeep Narwal showcased top form against Bengaluru Bulls with 14 points in the match.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Thalaivas will aim to register successive victories when they take on Bengaluru Bulls. But, the Thalaivas will certainly face a tough challenge from raiders Vikash Kandola and Bharat.
PKL 9: Happy with win but still not satisfied, says Tamil Thalaivas’ coach Udaya Kumar

B Praak says that he is often known for his romantic track but ‘Hypnotize’ was altogether a different experience.
“People often associate me with soft romantic songs so ‘Hypnotize’ was a really different experience for me. Audiences will hear a different style to my vocals and I hope they enjoy it as much as they enjoy my other songs,” he concludes.
Gippy Grewal and Jasmin Bhasin-starrer Honeymoon’ is all set to release on October 25. The song ‘Hypnotize’ is out on T-Series’ YouTube channel.

Anti-incumbency sentiment against PM Modi remains low
It has become conventional wisdom that sitting Prime Minister Narendra Modi gets the most credit for the incredible rise in the electoral strength of the BJP since 2014. While the majority of the states find maximum anger against elected representatives or state governments, the PM’s ratings remain on the higher side, as per the latest media-CVoter Anti-Incumbency Tracker.
The teflon coating is normal in the Hindi heartland but even the states where the anger levels against the PM are very low throw up some surprises; at least on the surface.
The three states where voters are least angry with the PM are Chhattisgarh (6.7 percent), Delhi (8.6 percent), and West Bengal (9.8 percent). The first two are on predictable lines, but the numbers of West Bengal show the state might be witnessing another internal churn, practically because the ruling Trinamool Congress has a complete grip on all layers of power in the state, from panchayats to municipalities and also with the historically high number of MLAs in the assembly, causing the anti-incumbency sentiment to get concentrated at local governance more than the national governance.
However, against the flow of the tide, some BJP-dominated states like Goa, Jharkhand, and Karnataka also show higher than average levels of voter anger against the prime minister.
This was revealed in an exclusive analysis for media conducted for the quarterly anti-incumbency data collected by CVoter through its daily tracker polls. This could be food for thought for poll strategists in the BJP who have become famous for their 24/7 approach to elections.
Besides, surveys conducted by CVoter, and a host of other agencies have shown repeatedly that the Prime Minister remains the most popular leader of the country. In the immediate aftermath of the second wave of the Covid pandemic, the popularity and approval ratings of the PM did look shaky; but he remained the most popular.
In this quarterly anti-incumbency analysis done by CVoter for media, Goa, Jharkhand, and Karnataka stand out as states where voters are unexpectedly unhappy with the PM. For instance, 35.8 percent of the respondents in Goa were most unhappy with the PM; the numbers were 25.9 per cent and 25.6 percent, respectively, for Jharkhand and Karnataka. The BJP had virtually swept almost all Lok Sabha seats in these three states in the 2019 general elections.
The other states where respondents expressed high levels of dissatisfaction with the PM were predictable: Punjab, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. These three states have had maximum negative ratings for PM Modi over the last eight years.
TikTok brings adult-only streams, raises age requirement for going live
Short video platform TikTok confirmed that it is introducing live streams for adults and is also increasing the minimum age requirement for live streams on its platform.
Currently, people must be aged 16 or over to host a LIVE. From November 23, the minimum age will increase from 16 to 18.
“In addition, in the coming weeks, we plan to introduce a new way for creators to choose if they’d prefer to only reach an adult audience in their LIVE,” the platform said in a blog post.
“For instance, perhaps a comedy routine is better suited for people over age 18. Or, a host may plan to talk about a difficult life experience and they would feel more comfortable knowing the conversation is limited to adults,” it added.
TikTok LIVE brings people together through content that entertains and inspires, providing creators an opportunity to show up as their most authentic selves as they forge meaningful connections and share a window into their lives with a global community.
“To help creators focus on entertaining and engaging their viewers, LIVE creators can already use our keyword filtering tool to limit comments they feel aren’t appropriate. In the coming weeks, we are rolling out an updated version of this feature that will send a reminder to people and suggest new keywords they may want to consider adding to their filter list,” the company said in a blog post.
“To do this, the tool looks at the content a creator most commonly removes from their life, spotting similar words in these comments and then suggesting the host may want to add these words to their filter list. When we tested this feature, we found that it nearly doubled those using keyword filtering when looking at the most popular LIVE creators.”
TikTok said it has recently upgraded our Multi-Guest feature.
Through Multi-Guest, hosts can now go LIVE with up to five guests using a grid or panel layout, keeping audiences engaged as they respond to questions, host how-to videos, or simply share a moment together with the community.
And once LIVE, creators can tap the three dots to change a variety of settings. This includes the ability to flip the camera, add effects and stickers, filter comments, and add moderators if they haven’t already been assigned.

YouTube ends its Premium paywall experiment for 4K videos
YouTube has ended a test that required a Premium subscription for 4K resolution videos.
In the experiment, the Google-owned streaming platform asked some users to pay for a Premium account in order to view videos in 4K resolution.
Because of users’ outrage, it has now stopped this test, reports TechCrunch.
“We have fully turned off this experiment. Viewers should now be able to access 4K quality resolutions without Premium membership,” YouTube said in a tweet.
The streaming platform conducted the experiment to know how users would respond if a certain function was moved to the Premium tier.
“It is a part of our experiment to know better the feature preferences of Premium and non-Premium viewers,” it had said in a now-deleted tweet.
The company claims to have more than 50 million paid subscribers of YouTube Music and Premium offerings globally.
The Premium subscription includes features like ad-free viewing, video downloads for offline consumption, and background play, the report said.
Recently, the company introduced handles, a way for people to easily find and engage with creators and each other on the streaming platform.
Handles will appear on channel pages and Shorts so that they will be instantly and consistently recognizable.
It will soon be simpler and faster to mention each other in comments, community posts, video descriptions, and more.

Anushka Sharma shoots in Eden Garden for ‘Chakda Xpress’
Actress-producer Anushka Sharma was seen shooting in Kolkata’s iconic Eden Garden for her upcoming film ‘Chakda Xpress’.
In the pictures, Anushka, who will be seen playing cricketer Jhulan Goswami, is sporting shoulder-length hair and dressed in a cricket jersey and white sports shoes.
Jhulan Goswami succeeded in her goal and went on to captain the Indian women’s national cricket team and is a role model for aspiring cricketers in the country. In 2018, an Indian postage stamp was issued in her honor.
Jhulan Goswami holds the world record for the highest number of wickets taken by a woman in an international career.
‘Chakda Xpress’, directed by Prosit Roy, is based on the life of Jhulan Goswami, who became the second Indian woman cricketer to receive the Padma Shri in 2012. The film marks Anushka’s comeback to acting after four years.
‘Chakda Xpress’ will be shot in India and the UK and is being produced by Clean Slate Films.
Carlsen set to face Erigaisi again; Duda in pole position going into quarterfinals
A nerve-wracking final three rounds of the Aimchess Rapid prelim stage saw Polish ace Jan-Krzysztof Duda sail through to the quarterfinals in the first place while Anish Giri was sensationally knocked out.
Duda, the World Cup winner, sealed his spot and USD7,000 in-game winnings with an impressive 28/45 points. The 24-year-old also goes into the next phase having moved up to second in the overall Meltwater Champions Chess Tour rankings. He is now the only player left who can catch world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway.
In typically understated fashion, Duda — the only player left capable of catching Carlsen — said afterward, “I’m fairly satisfied.”
Meanwhile, Dutch No.1 Giri suffered the heartbreak of a last-gasp loss that killed his chances of making the cut. Giri went into the final preliminary round needing just a draw to secure his passage. Only India’s No.2 Vidit Gujrathi could stop him with a win and Giri losing.
But Giri collapsed against Arjun Erigaisi and then had to endure seeing Vidit Gujrathi crash through against David Anton and leapfrog him into eighth place. Vidit finished having won three of his last four games.
It was an unexpected turn of events and came after Giri had accepted a series of cautious draws, notably against the American Daniel Naroditsky in Round 12, when he could have pushed harder for wins. Giri admitted afterward that he “should have played more ambitiously with both colors”.
Visit, who comes from Nashik in northern India, was overjoyed with his first knockout appearance in the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour.
“It’s good to know how it feels,” he said. “I’m thrilled that I’m in the quarterfinals. Actually, it was completely unexpected. In fact, I had already made some plans for tomorrow that were not related to chess, so thanks to Arjun Erigaisi!”
Apart from the battle between Giri and Vidit for the final spot, results elsewhere had meant the final round was relatively straightforward with seven spots already decided.
Gukesh D., the 16-year-old Indian wonderkid who stunned Carlsen in Round 9, finished second on 27/45 edging out the more experienced Shakhriyar Mamedyarov by virtue of having beaten him in their head-to-head and Arjun Erigaisi, who also beat Carlsen.
The world champion, meanwhile, finished a lowly fifth on 26/45, but will no doubt regroup for the quarterfinal stage where he faces Erigaisi. The teenager Nordibek Abdusattorov, who led the first two days, and Richard Rapport complete the quarter-final line-up.
The award-winning Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, the world’s leading year-round chess circuit, reaches its penultimate tournament with the Aimchess Rapid. The event features 16 players in a round-robin prelim stage before the field is cut to eight and knockouts begin.
The Aimchess Rapid is the last “Regular” tournament of the 2022 season with a prize pot of $150,000 before the end-of-season final event starts on November 14.

1,20,000 school kids to watch U-17 Women’s World Cup, says FIFA
Almost 1,20,000 school students are expected to watch the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Bhubaneswar, Navi Mumbai, and Goa, the world governing body of the sport said in a statement on Monday.
In the opening week of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, the tournament has already attracted a lot of warmth from football fans in the country. The initiative was undertaken jointly by the tournament’s Local Organising Committee and FIFA at the three venues in Bhubaneswar, Margao, and Navi Mumbai.
For Jaime Yarza, Director of Tournaments, FIFA, the sight of the children having fun in Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium is a stand-out moment.
“The matches, where the kids are dancing, celebrating, and laughing, created the ‘pictures of the day for me,” he said.
“The joy of watching the tournament take off is even sweeter for him because of the uncertainty that surrounded its fate due to the pandemic.
“It was a hard time for a lot of people, especially for those who were here for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017,” Yarza said.
“Having experienced the passion that we did back then, it was hard to be unsure if it (the 2022 tournament) could happen in India. So, now seeing the games being played, it’s a real pleasure for all of us.”
Yarza also shed light on the genesis of the initiative that has made it possible for the kids to witness some enthralling football action.
“Three months ago, I was here for a meeting with the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Thakur. I told him that I want to give back to the community by bringing kids to the matches and giving them a great experience. He was completely aligned with us on the idea and called the sports ministers of the respective states to ensure that the kids are invited to the stadiums,” he informed.
Nandini Arora, who is one of the Project Directors of the tournament, also spoke about the initiative. She said, “Through this tournament, we want to promote the ideas of equality and inclusion. We want these boys and girls to come and see how well these young women can play.”

Is Central Asia distancing itself from Russia?
The Russia-Ukraine conflict which has been continuing for the last more than seven months has resulted in a huge decline in the standing and prestige of Russia in the world. It was initially thought that Russia would be able to effect a quick regime change in Kiev resulting in an early end to the war. It was with such assumptions that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was offered political asylum both by the then UK PM Boris Johnson and US President Joe Biden in the first days of the conflict. Zelensky, however, countered by saying that he wanted, not asylum, but armaments and ammunition to fight the enemy.
Right from the beginning, Zelensky maintained that he was fighting to win. No one believed him. They attributed his statements to misplaced bravado. Both Zelensky and his forces as well as the Ukrainian people however surprised the whole world with the grit and determination with which they withstood the onslaught of the mighty Russian army. Russian President Vladimir Putin might have thought that the Russian forces would be welcomed as liberators in Ukraine but the tenacity and fortitude with which the Ukrainian soldiers and people have defended their country has earned them the admiration and respect of large segments of the global community.
Ukraine’s remarkable successes particularly over the last few weeks by quickly taking over large swathes of land in the north and south of the country earlier annexed by Russia as well as strategically situated towns like Lyman have taken Russia as well as the world by surprise. The wisdom at the start of the war was that Ukraine cannot win because Russia cannot lose. The significant reverses suffered by Russia over the last few weeks have forced the global strategic community to re-examine its assumptions.
In Central Asia, China has been rapidly expanding its footprint over the last many years, not only in the trade and economic fields but also in political, military, and security affairs. This has been evident in the myriad oil and gas pipelines from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan in Central Asia to China over the last two decades. The Belt and Road Initiative launched initially as the One Belt One Road Project in 2013 in Kazakhstan has provided a further impetus to the rapidly expanding China-Central Asia partnership.
Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia has been viewed as the security provider of the Central Asia region. The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a NATO-like security bloc established under the leadership of the Russian Federation was expected to ensure the security and stability of countries in the region. The CSTO did swing into action to provide a few thousand troops to provide security to Kazakhstan when it was rocked by violent protests and demonstrations at the beginning of this year. Although the CSTO forces stayed in Kazakhstan for barely a few weeks and were not required to fire even a single shot, the fact that they could be mobilized at such short notice was seen as indicative of Russia’s authority in the region.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict since the end of February 2022 has, however, completely transformed the relative equation and standing of Russia and China in Central Asia. This had started becoming evident even since 2014 with the annexation of Crimea by Russia. The ensuing sanctions by the West resulted in pushing Russia increasingly into the embrace of China with Russia emerging as the junior, subordinate partner to China.
The last few months have thrown up many instances which would emphatically suggest that the Central Asian nations viz. Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan are getting increasingly uneasy and uncomfortable with Russia’s actions in Ukraine. The sway and influence of Russia in Central Asia which it characterizes as it’s ‘near abroad’ is declining and sliding.
Several instances to substantiate the above can be cited. Some of these are:
Both Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan which are the largest countries of Central Asia in land area and population respectively pursue “multi-vector foreign policies.” Leaders of both countries have stated unequivocally that they will not recognize the independent status of the Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics.
At the St Petersburg International Economic Forum in June 2022, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan responding to a question in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Kazakhstan does not acknowledge the independence of LPR and DPR. He said that if the right of nations to self-determination was recognized, there would be more than 500-600 countries instead of the current 193 members of the UN. For this reason, he said that Kazakhstan inter alia does not recognize the independence of Kosovo, or [the breakaway Georgian regions of] South Ossetia and Abkhazia. And, also quasi-state territories like Luhansk and Donetsk. Kazakh Foreign Ministry stated on 26th September 2022 that it will not recognize the referenda conducted by Russia in the four provinces of Ukraine. It voiced its support for the territorial integrity of States.
During the same visit to St Petersburg, Tokayev, in response to a question from the state-run Rossia-24 television station, about the gratitude that Kazakhstan ought to feel for the support rendered by Russia/CSTO to it in its hour of need in January 2022, stated: “In Russia, some people distort this whole situation asserting that Russia supposedly saved Kazakhstan and Kazakhstan should now eternally serve and bow down at the feet of Russia. I believe that these are totally unjustified arguments that are far from reality.”
The then Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov stated in the Uzbek Senate on 17th March 2022: “Uzbekistan historically has traditional all-round ties with both Ukraine and Russia…Uzbekistan recognizes the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine. We do not recognize the Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics.”
Senior Kazakh leaders have stated on several occasions that Kazakhstan will not violate the Western sanctions imposed on Russia as it did not wish to be subjected to secondary sanctions of the western nations.
Timur Suleimenov, the first deputy chief of staff to president Tokayaev said during his visit to Brussels in March 2022: “We have not recognized and do not recognize either the situation with Crimea or the situation with Donbas, because the UN does not recognize them. We will only respect decisions made at the level of the United Nations.”
Kazakhstan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Roman Vassilenko, in a meeting with the EU in March 2022, emphasized the importance of minimizing or preventing the negative effects of the EU’s sanctions against Russia on trade and economic relations between Kazakhstan and the EU. He added: “European companies are leaving Russia either due to sanctions or due to pressure from the public, from shareholders, and ethical reasons. They want to be somewhere in the neighborhood, and we would like to be that neighbor.” He said in an interview that Kazakhstan did not want to become a collateral victim of politically motivated economic warfare and if “there is a new iron curtain, we do not want to be behind it.”
Both Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have expressed keen interest to welcome multinational companies which want to leave Russia as a result of the sanctions imposed by Western nations on Russia. According to reports, several companies have already relocated to these countries.
Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan have expressly barred their nationals residing in Russia to join the war effort against Ukraine. It appears that at the beginning of the conflict, but particularly after the announcement of the mobilization of 300,000 troops by Russia last month, Russia offered attractive salaries and also expedited processes to obtain citizenship of the country after having served at the front for one year.
Some sporadic protests and demonstrations against Russia’s war in Ukraine have been allowed and held in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Humanitarian assistance and medical relief supplies to Ukraine have been provided by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.
President Putin’s diminished standing amongst Central Asian states was visible when he was received by the Uzbek Prime Minister on his visit to Samarkand, Uzbekistan to participate in the SCO Summit. On the other hand, Chinese President Xi Jinping was received by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev himself at the airport. It has also been reported that Putin was made to wait for his bilateral meetings at the SCO Summit in Samarkand interalia by the Presidents of Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, and Azerbaijan. It has been mentioned that in the past President Putin has often been late for his meetings and has made leaders of other countries wait for him. These reports have not been countered by the Russian foreign office.
Central Asian countries are feeling nervous both at the arguments advanced by Russia to launch its offensive against Ukraine as also the impunity with which President Putin was able to carry out the attack. Some of them, particularly Kazakhstan, are worried that they could be next. Kazakhstan has the world’s longest land border of more than 7,000 km with Russia and also has an 18 percent population of Russian origin and ethnicity. Kazakhstan in particular, but the other Central Asian nations to a much lesser extent, are fearful of Russia’s thinking and plans.
Recently there was a tweet by former Russian President and PM Dmitry Medvedev that Kazakhstan is an “Artificial State”. This tweet was however quickly taken down and it was clarified that Medvedev’s account had been hacked. Putin had himself made a similar assertion some years ago. Several right-wing politicians in Russia have made threatening noises after Tokayev’s Statement in St Petersburg in June 2022 warning Kazakhstan that it should watch its steps as it could be the next after Ukraine. Tokayev had quite clearly made his displeasure and objection evident during that visit.
The disastrous performance of the Russian army in Ukraine over the last few months has forced the Central Asian countries to re-think that if Russia has been found wanting so drastically in Ukraine, how would it be able to provide security to them? The diminishing stature of Russia in the Region has animated China to quickly enhance its influence in the region. This was visible in the recent announcement of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway link which had been lying dormant for the last many years. Also, several far-reaching agreements to further expand partnerships were signed by Xi Jinping during his recent visits to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
While welcoming the flow of investment from China to their countries, the Central Asian nations, particularly the people, if not so much the ruling classes and elite, are anxious and apprehensive about the unduly growing influence and dominance of China. They have hence started looking out for options amongst other countries.
Several countries in the region and beyond are also sensing this opportunity and are keen to strengthen their partnership with these countries. Turkiye has been working in Central Asian countries for the last many years. It shares historical, cultural, linguistic, religious, and civilizational ties with all of whom, except with Tajikistan. The last few years have witnessed frequent meetings between the leadership of Central Asia with the President of Turkey. President Erdogan was also present in person for the first time at the SCO Summit in Samarkand. Iran has also been advancing its partnership with Central Asia. It has just become the newest member of SCO. The US organized a C5+1 meeting with the foreign ministers of all Central Asian states on the margins of the UNGA in New York recently.

Reliance Jio plans to deploy a 5G standalone network which will interwork with its 4G network. The network will enable Reliance Jio to deliver advanced 5G services such as massive machine-to-machine communications, network slicing, and ultra-low latency.
“This is a significant win for Nokia in an important market and a new customer with one of the largest RAN footprints in the world. This ambitious project will introduce millions of people across India to premium 5G services, enabled by our industry-leading AirScale portfolio,” said Pekka Lundmark, President, and CEO at Nokia.
Ericsson’s energy-efficient 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) products and solutions from Ericsson Radio System and E-band microwave mobile transport solution will be deployed in the 5G network for Jio. All products and solutions are deployed on new-build 5G SA networks, designed to maximise the benefits of 5G to CSPs and their customers — whether individual subscribers or enterprise and industry customers.
“India is building the world-class digital infrastructure that will drive innovation, job creation, and entrepreneurship across the country,” said Borje Ekholm, President, and CEO, of Ericsson.
“We are happy to partner with Jio in those ambitions through Ericsson 5G Standalone connectivity, which will be a major catalyst in meeting those digital transformation goals across society, enterprise and industry,” Ekholm added.
