Director Mithran is extremely intelligent: Raashi Khanna

Actress Raashi Khanna, who plays one of the three female leads in director P.S. Mithran’s upcoming spy thriller ‘Sardar’, has called the director brilliant and a feminist.

Speaking at a press conference prior to the trailer launch event of the film, which features actor Karthi in the lead, Raashi Khanna said: “Mithran is the most amazing director I have ever worked with. He is extremely, extremely intelligent.

“I think the future of our films is in good hands if we have filmmakers like Mithran. After the narration, I was blown away by the story, the screenplay, and the way he has written his characters.

“I can say that he is a sort of a feminist the way he has written characters for all of us. So well-blended! This is a film where you are basically blending a spy thriller with a social cause. It is so difficult but he has done it and he has done such a great job.

“I am so happy I got to work with you Mithran and I really look forward to your future films I hope that I get to work with you real soon. I think you are brilliant.”

The film, which is to hit screens on October 21, features Karthi in double action — one as a spy and another as a police officer crazy about publicity.

Apart from Karthi, the film also features Chunkey Pandey, Laila, Rajisha Vijayan, and Raashi Khanna among others.

Vishnu Manchu trashes rumours claiming he had run down teaser of ‘Adipurush’

Popular Telugu star Vishnu Manchu has trashed rumors that claimed he had come down heavily on the teaser of Prabhas-starrer Adipurush’.

The actor, according to rumors being spread, had allegedly said that he felt cheated by the makers of ‘Adipurush’ and actor Prabhas.

‘Space sector moving towards constellation of satellites’

0

The global space sector is moving away from geo-satellite and towards the constellation of small satellites in low earth orbit, a senior official of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) said on Saturday.

In his address at the conference ‘Space Technology: The Next Business Frontier’, Prof. Rajeev Jyoti, Distinguished Scientist, Director (Technical), IN-SPACe, said the space sector, in the next 10 years, is shifting from geo-satellites to the constellation of satellites.

He said there are estimates that 10,000 satellites are likely to be launched in the near future.

Jyoti said the space sector must be taken forward by entrepreneurs and space businesses instead of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) being the only integrator of the entire space ecosystem.

“According to a newly-announced policy, if a space object is not functionally working, it has to be removed within five years in order to avoid space debris in place of the earlier 25 years. We have to develop technologies for active space debris removal,” he said.

The conference is organized by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), the US Consulate General Chennai, and the Indian Space Association.

Drew Schufletowski, Minister Counselor for Economic, Environment, Science and Technology Affairs, US Embassy, New Delhi, said, India and the US are natural partners in the space sector and there are immense opportunities for expanding bilateral and multilateral collaboration in the space sector.

Back in 1963, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and ISRO worked together to launch the first Indian-sounding rocket.

Since then, the two space agencies have collaborated on numerous projects including moon exploration, Schufletowski said.

“Currently, NASA and ISRO are collaborating on one of NASA’s biggest projects – the NASA-ISRO SAR Mission (NISAR), a joint Earth-observing mission, he said.

On September 30, 2014, NASA and the ISRO signed a partnership to collaborate on and launch NISAR. The mission is targeted to launch in early 2023.

Dr. Mylswamy Annadurai, Vice President, of Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology and former senior official of the ISRO said: “This conclave is a focused project with the outcome being a white paper that will lead to the establishment of ‘Association of Space Entrepreneurs in the Indo-Pacific’ (ASEIP).

Meta’s virtual legs update not on Horizon Worlds VR yet

0

Meta has announced the addition of legs to its virtual avatars which are not yet on its VR platform Horizon Worlds yet and might not arrive until next year.

Users of Horizon Worlds have legless torsos as virtual avatars as of now.

The fact that their bodies are just floating in the virtual world without any legs confuses many people, reports TechCrunch.

The avatars of Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of the company, and another executive, Aigerim Shorman, were seen bouncing and kicking during the ‘Meta Connect’ conference demo.

The problem with the leg demonstration was that it used motion capture technology, instead of VR-based tracking.

“To enable this preview of what’s to come, the segment featured animations created from motion capture,” said the company.

The legs in the virtual world might not be as good as genuine legs for a while. “Seriously, legs are hard”, said Zuckerberg.

Recently, Microsoft and Meta partnered to deliver immersive experiences in VR. The collaboration brings Teams and Microsoft’s other productive tools to VR headsets, and Meta gets a partner in its grand metaverse plan.

The company claimed to provide Windows 365 on Meta Quest devices in the future, which will help to stream a Windows Cloud PC.

In order to enable gamers to stream high-quality Xbox games to smartphones, tablets, PCs, some smart TVs, and the Meta Quest platform, Microsoft and Meta are looking into ways to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming to the store

A one-liner on an actor turning spy got me interested in ‘Sardar’, says Karthi

Actor Karthi, who plays the lead in director P. S. Mithran’s upcoming spy thriller, ‘Sardar’, has disclosed that it was director P. S. Mithran’s single-line narration on how the army chose to recruit a theatre artiste and turn him into a spy that got him hooked onto the project.

Speaking at the trailer launch event of the film on Friday, actor Karthi said: “When producer Lakshman made me meet director P. S. Mithran, the latter casually narrated a one-liner to me. Mithran told me that in the eighties when the Indian government was looking to set up a team of spies, they tried to train some of those in the military to act.

“However, despite a lot of effort, those in the military couldn’t act. That was when the think tank thought, ‘Why should we strain so much? Why should we not take a theatre actor and put him in the military?’ So, a theatre artiste was recruited and a team trained him and sent him to Pakistan.

“That idea itself was stunning. A theatre artiste being converted into a spy. It was interesting. On learning about this, I asked Mithran to write the script. After a couple of revisions, Mithran came back and told me that the script had taken shape but that it had changed into a double-action script. Mithran said, ‘This story requires double action. Otherwise, it can’t be done.’ So, that was how ‘Sardar’ began.”

The film, which is to hit screens on October 21, features Karthi in double action – one as a spy and another as a police officer crazy about publicity.

Apart from Karthi, the film also features Chunkey Pandey, Laila, Rajisha Vijayan, and Raashi Khanna among others.

Music for the film has been scored by G. V. Prakash Kumar and the cinematography is by George C. Williams. Editing is by Ruben and Art direction is by Kadhir.

Pakistan may be one of the most dangerous nations in the world: Biden

0

US President Joe Biden said Pakistan may be “one of the most dangerous nations in the world” as the country has “nuclear weapons without any cohesion”.

He made the remarks while addressing a Democratic congressional campaign committee reception, Dawn news reported.

A transcript of the address, published on the White House’s website on Friday, quoted Biden as saying: “And what I think is maybe one of the most dangerous nations in the world: Pakistan. Nuclear weapons without any cohesion.”

The President’s remarks were made in the context of the changing geopolitical situation globally.

He said the world was changing rapidly and countries were rethinking their alliances.

“And the truth of the matter is, I genuinely believe this, that the world is looking to us. Not a joke. Even our enemies are looking to us to figure out how we figure this out, what we do.”

There was a lot at stake, Biden said, emphasizing that the US had the capacity to lead the world to a place it had never been before, Dawn reported.

“Did any of you ever think you’d have a Russian leader, since the Cuban Missile Crisis, threatening the use of tactical nuclear weapons that would, could only kill three, four thousand people and be limited to make a point?

“Did anybody think we’d be in a situation where China is trying to figure out its role relative to Russia and relative to India and relative to Pakistan?” he added

Talking about his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, the US President termed him as a man who knew what he wanted but had an “enormous” array of problems.

Google Meet to automatically zoom in on your face for more visibility

0

Tech giant Google has announced a new feature for Meet users to improve visibility by automatically framing the video.

Before a user attends a meeting, Meet will automatically frame the video to ensure that everyone is equally visible, the company said in a blog post.

There are no motion disturbances that could draw attention away from the meeting’s subject because the automatic framing only happens once. But the video can be reframed manually at any time.

This feature does not have admin control. By default, this function will be disabled, however, it can be turned on by the user.

The new feature is scheduled to roll out on November 2, the company said.

The feature was first announced during the Google Cloud Next 2022.

Earlier, the company had announced a Meet feature that enables users to unmute themselves by holding down the spacebar and to mute themselves again by releasing it.

The company said it will make it easier for users to participate in their meetings by quickly unmuting to say something.

“This feature helps in situations where you forget to mute again after unmuting yourself. This feature is OFF by default and can be enabled in the Google Meet settings,” the company said.

The company said it changed how the “Hey Google” voice control works for Google Meet hardware devices.

With this update, the Google Assistant will only be active when a device is not in a meeting and within 10 minutes of an upcoming meeting.

Swiatek scores dominant win over American teen Gauff; enters San Diego semifinal

0

World No.1 Iga Swiatek of Poland scored a dominant 6-0, 6-3 win over teenager Coco Gauff to advance to the semifinals of the San Diego Open, extending her undefeated record against the No. 8 from the US to 4-0.

Swiatek, who is in her third consecutive semifinal, will face another American, world No.6 Jessica Pegula, in the semifinal. Pegula booked her last-four spot by defeating Madison Keys 6-4, 7-5 in the first meeting between two of the top three-ranked Americans on the Tour.

The biggest difference between the two quarterfinal opponents on Friday evening was in offense, where Swiatek has improved the most this year. Swiatek pocketed the first eight games before the American teenager held serve to 2-1 in the second set. However, Swiatek finished off the match in 65 minutes with 13 winners to nine unforced errors while breaking Gauff five times.

Gauff hit 17 winners to 26 unforced errors and could not convert on the three break-point opportunities she earned.

Dealt a tough draw here, Swiatek handled Tokyo finalist Zheng Qinwen in three sets in her opening match and followed it up with a clinical performance to beat Gauff. In every tournament at which she has played Gauff, Swiatek has gone on to win the title, having beaten the American at 2021 Rome, 2022 Miami, and 2022 Roland Garros, according to wtatennis.com.

The victory is Swiatek’s 62nd of the season and 40th on the hard court. Having won Indian Wells, Miami, and the US Open, the 21-year-old is now 22-1 in the United States this season. The first set against Gauff was her 20th 6-0 “bagel” set of the season, the most since Serena Williams posted 25 in her 2013 season, according to the website.

“I’ve played (Swiatek) so often that I kind of know what to expect,” Pegula said of her semifinal opponent. “She plays super athletic, aggressive, and defends really well. She does everything at a really high level. She plays a little bit differently than the girls and sometimes that can be the difference. You’re not used to playing someone like her.

“I’d like to say maybe it’s better playing her at the end of the year, but I don’t know. We’ll see how the match goes.”

Swiatek and Pegula will clash for the fourth time this season. Swiatek has swept their sets, winning in the Miami semifinals, Roland Garros quarterfinals, and US Open quarterfinals last month.

“Jessie is one of the most solid players on tour so it’s always hard,” Swiatek said. “Our matches are always physical and really tight. Even though sometimes the scores are one way, you can see during the games we always have deuces and any point can matter. I’m pretty happy that we’re going to play against each other because it’s a test for me of where my level is because she’s really, really solid.”

Princess Diana cuts a lonely figure in ‘The Crown’ Season 5 first look

The first look of ‘The Crown’ Season 5 featuring a brand new cast has been revealed by streaming giant Netflix.

The stills show a lonely-looking Princess Diana played by Elizabeth Debicki, taking over from Emma Corrin in the previous season, clad in a sparkly gown as she heads into a glamorous evening engagement, her shoulders hunched and head bowed, reports Variety.

In another image, Prince Charles played by Dominic West, who replaces Josh O’Connor from seasons 3 and 4 and his mistress Camilla Parker Bowles played by Olivia Williams, who steps into Emerald Fennell’s shoes are beaming while huddling together outdoors as they appear to watch a fireworks display.

In another, happier, photograph, however, Diana and Charles are pictured together on a speedboat vacationing with their young sons Prince William and Prince Harry.

“That’s the amazing thing about playing these people at this time because, in the journey of ‘The Crown’ so far out of all the seasons, this is the most visual content we have of the Royal Family,” Debicki told Netflix’s fansite Tudum, who first revealed the images.

“In the ’90s, everything had started to be filmed, and also it was the birth of the 24-hour news cycle so there’s just this incredible amount of content that we have access to. Diana was the most photographed person in the world at that time. As an actor, you open the portal and this huge tsunami of information comes at you. I happily swam around in it.”

West added: “I think people understand because the cast has changed every two seasons, that this is not an imitation. This is an evoking of a character. That’s really where the show lives: in the imagined conversations of their private life, which is something that no one knows.”

“I think that’s what it gets a lot of criticism for. How can you know what they talk about in their private lives? The obvious answer is we don’t, but we have an incredible writer, a dramatist, who imagines based on exhaustive research, and that’s really part of the fascination of the show.”

There is also a shot of Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II herself, apparently in Scotland, alongside her husband Prince Philip (Jonathan Pryce), with both wearing signature red tartan. Staunton takes over the role of monarch and matriarch from Olivia Colman, who played Her Majesty in the third and fourth seasons of the show, while Pryce replaces Tobias Menzies.

In the series’ first two seasons, Claire Foy played a young Queen in the first two decades of her reign while Matt Smith played Prince Philip.

One of the conceits of ‘The Crown’ is that the cast is replaced every two seasons to mark the passing of time. Each season covers approximately one decade of the royal family’s life.

Season 5, which will be released in one go on Netflix on November 9, will take viewers through the late 1980s and early 1990s, during one of the royal family’s most difficult decades.

1992, which the Queen famously described as her “annus horribilis” saw three of her four children separate or divorce their spouses while Windsor Castle suffered from a catastrophic fire.

‘The Crown’ is currently shooting its sixth and purportedly final season, which is believed to cover Diana’s death in 1997.

‘Kantara’ hitmaker Rishab Shetty on how he juggled acting with direction

With the Kannada movie ‘Kantara’ scoring big at the box office and taking other markets by storm, the southern film industry continues its winning streak in the pan-India market. But what sets ‘Kantara’ apart from other recent southern blockbusters like ‘Pushpa’ or ‘RRR’, is its refreshing take on the age-old conflict between man and nature.

“The human-nature conflict is present all over the world. This conflict is present ever since humans appeared on the scene. This is what I set out to tell,” the movie’s director and lead actor Rishab Shetty told to media.

After bringing Kannada audiences in droves to theatres, ‘Kantara’ is repeating its success story in other languages too. Rishab Shetty confessed that while he knew he had a winner on his hands, he definitely did not anticipate the scale of success it clocked.

“I have always strongly believed that the more local we go, the more rooted our stories are, the more universal they become.”

Interestingly, the story of the movie has its genesis in a real-life incident that happened thirty years ago in his hometown. Shetty stumbled upon the seed of his story in the course of a random conversation he had about organic farming with his friend during the Covid lockdown. Locking the subject immediately, he delved into his own memories from his younger days, and ‘Kantara’ was born.

“In the coastal Karnataka region, agricultural land is not merely land, it involves divinity. Every aspect of life is associated with that earth. I looked at agricultural land as a bridge between man, god, and beliefs. I felt that it’s also important to tell the outside world about our culture and traditions,” Rishab explained.

The movie is also from the Hombale Films banner which has produced the hugely successful KGF series, starring Yash.

After making his presence felt with interesting movies made on modest budgets, Rishab Shetty is happy that ‘Kantara’ which was made on a relatively high budget has made its mark at the box office.

But acting and directing the movie certainly put him under pressure, he confessed.
“Directing a scene and jumping in to enact my role was certainly tough. But I never let the others sense it. Looking back I don’t think I can go through it again.”
