Mulayam Singh Yadav passes away at 82

Veteran Samajwadi leader and MP, Mulayam Singh Yadav, died here on Monday after a prolonged illness.

His son and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav tweeted about his demise.

Mulayam Singh Yadav was 82 and had been on a life support system for the past one week. He was admitted to the Medanta hospital in Gurugram on August 22.

According to hospital sources, he breathed his last at 8.15 a.m. on Monday.

The 82-year-old Samajwadi Party patriarch was facing difficulty in breathing and was under the supervision of an internal medicine expert at the Medanta Hospital, as per sources. Singh was suffering from a urinary infection as well, hospital sources had said.

On Sunday, Medanta Hospital put out a health bulletin stating that the veteran leader’s condition was quite critical and that he was on life-saving drugs.

After Meta-owned Instagram, Twitter has now locked rapper Kanye West, who now goes by the account name “Ye”, out of his account after he posted an anti-Semitic tweet, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk welcomed him on the micro-blogging platform.

West surfaced on Twitter for the first time since November 2020, tweeting “Look at this Mark, How you went kick me off Instagram, You used to be my n***a”, along with a blurry image of himself and Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg singing karaoke.

“The account in question has been locked due to a violation of Twitter’s policies,” a Twitter spokesperson told The Verge on Sunday.

Instagram has also removed content from West’s account and placed restrictions on it following repeated policy violations.

Musk quickly welcomed West back to the platform, despite his recent expressions of antisemitism.

“Welcome back to Twitter, my friend!” tweeted the Tesla CEO.

West later posted a controversial text: “I’m a bit sleepy tonight but when I wake up I’m going death (sic) con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE. You guys have toyed with me and tried to blackball anyone who opposes your agenda.”

In spite of Musk’s approval, Twitter removed the tweet and later locked the rapper’s account.

Instagram also placed a restriction on Kanye West’s account after deleting content for a violation of the platform’s policies, reported Variety.

A Meta spokesperson said that temporary restrictions on posting, commenting and messaging are standard practice for accounts that regularly violate the social media platform’s policies.

25 killed in rain-related incidents in UP

At least 25 people have died in separate rain-related incidents across Uttar Pradesh till late on Sunday night.

Most of the deaths have been reported in cases of house collapse.

Water levels are rising in all major rivers in the state following uninterrupted rain during the past 48 hours.

The state met department has issued a warning of moderate to heavy rainfall on Monday in eastern, and central parts of the state, Bundelkhand, Terai Belt, and Rohilkhand areas.

District magistrates in Lucknow, Noida, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, Rampur, and Meerut decided to close all schools till class 12 on Monday while Agra and Aligarh administrations have declared school holidays on Monday and Tuesday.

Nearly 400 villages in the Balrampur district have been flooded and two persons have been swept away after a boat capsized in Barhalganj in Gorakhpur.

The Lucknow Municipal Corporation has asked people to remain vigilant and advised people to avoid crowded places and dilapidated buildings.

Several districts have opened up helplines for people affected by rainfall-related problems.

India’s apex bank to pilot launch digital version of Indian currency soon

The apex bank of India — Reserve Bank of India (RBI) — said it would soon commence the pilot launch of the digital version of the Indian currency Rupee for specific use cases.

It has also released a concept note on Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) that aims to create awareness about such currencies in general and the planned features of the Digital Rupee in particular, the RBI said in official communication.

The RBI concept note states that the central bank digital currency is a sovereign currency issued by the central banks in alignment with the monetary policy. It will appear as a liability on the central bank’s balance sheet.

“The concept note also discusses key considerations such as technology and design choices, possible uses of the digital rupee, and issuance mechanisms, among others,” the RBI said in a statement.

According to the concept note, the digital currency must be accepted as a medium of payment, legal tender, and a safe store of value by all citizens, enterprises, and government agencies.

The digital currency will be freely convertible against commercial bank money and cash. It will be a fungible legal tender for which holders need not have a bank account.

In the Union Budget for 2022-23, the finance minister had said the RBI would roll out a digital equivalent to the rupee in the current financial year.

As the extent and scope of such pilot launches expand, the RBI will continue to communicate about the specific features and benefits of the digital rupee, from time to time, it said in a statement.

The Digital Rupee is expected to lower the cost of issuance of money and transactions. Faced by a dwindling usage of paper currency, the central banks are now seeking to popularise a more acceptable electronic form of currency.

The central bank’s digital currency will be supported by the state-of-art payment systems of India that are affordable, accessible, convenient, safe, and secure. The apex bank’s concept note stated that the e-rupee will bolster India’s digital economy, enhance financial inclusion and make the monetary and payment systems more efficient.

“The e-rupee will provide an additional option to the currently available forms of money. It is substantially not different from banknotes, but being digital it is likely to be easier, faster, and cheaper. It also has all the transactional benefits of other forms of digital money,” the RBI said in the statement.

The concept note stated that digital currency should be developed as a platform that is highly scalable to support a very high volume and rate of transactions without performance degradation. It should be robust to ensure the stability of the financial ecosystem and have tamper-proof access control protocols and cryptography for data safety among other features.

The central bank’s digital currency is expected to generate huge sets of data in real time. “After factoring in the concerns related to anonymity, appropriate analytics of Big Data generated from CBDC can assist in evidence-based policymaking. It may also become a rich data source for service providers for financial product insights,” the concept note stated.

Stressing consumer protection, RBI calls it an important pillar of financial stability. The central bank has called for a consumer protection framework that should consider the variations in the digital literacy of the consumers and ways to increase consumer understanding and transparency.

The RBI called for seamless access to digital currency by consumers. It also emphasized an effective and efficient resolution of customer grievances through a robust mechanism.

Assembly members of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region had voted to increase the time period for one more year of the present four-year legislative time.

The 111-seat parliament issued the bill with many of the 80 members when was the session conducted on Sunday, with many Kurdish opposition members way from Islamic parties and independent, lawmakersXinhua news agency reported.

The failure to hold elections came as a result of differences between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) over electoral districts and the quota of seats for ethnic and religious components in the region.

The regional parliamentary elections were held on September 30, 2018, and the KDP took the lead with 45 seats, and the PUK came in second place with 21 seats out of 111.

He was responding to questions on how the rally has changed him as a person. “Along this padyatra, communication with people, I wanted an element of suffering for myself.

“I didn’t want the march to be easy. I was wanting to do something which would make me suffer. While I am talking to my people, I can share my sufferings. That was the idea.

“So, I find that to be a very powerful experience. When you are walking on the road and speaking to your people, after suffering, communication is better.

Apple AirPods beta firmware arrives for developers

Tech giant Apple has issued a new beta firmware for its AirPods to developers after the release of iOS 16.1 beta 4 earlier this week.

The new AirPods beta firmware comes with build number ‘5B5040’, reports 9to5Mac.

The AirPods menu has been updated by Apple with iOS 16 within the Settings app to include a section that displays information about the most recent firmware.

With the release of iOS 16, the last AirPods firmware update featured the Personalised Spatial Audio function and enhanced Automatic Switching.

According to the company, Airpods can take up to 24 hours to update after enabling the pre-release Beta Firmware option.

For AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Max, the firmware upgrade is now accessible.

Earlier, owners of the first-generation AirPods Pro and AirPods Max observed that the Adaptive Transparency option for these headphones was enabled with the release of iOS 16.1 beta 3 last week, the report said.

Later the company removed the option with iOS 16.1 beta 4, confirming that it was just a bug.

The Adaptive Transparency option helps minimize specific sounds while still letting users hear what’s important around them.

India is among the countries with the highest number of Android trojan detections and a cloned, third-party unofficial version of WhatsApp is leading in spying on people’s chats in the country, a new report has warned.

Behind a large portion of Android spyware detection in the past four months was ‘GB WhatsApp’ — a popular but cloned third-party version of WhatsApp, according to the report by cyber-security firm ESET.

Such malicious apps have a wide range of spying capabilities, including recording audio and video.

“The cloned app is not available on Google Play and, therefore, there are no security checks in place compared with the legitimate WhatsApp, and versions available on various download websites are riddled with malware,” said the report.

India (35 percent) was also ranked second after China (53 percent) as the geolocation for bots making up the largest internet of things (IoT) botnet called ‘Mozi’ from May to August 2022.

The IoT botnet ‘Mozi’ saw the number of bots drop by 23 per cdnt from 500,000 compromised devices to 383,000 in May-August.

However, China and India continued to have the highest number of IoT bots geolocated inside the respective countries.

“These statistics confirm the assumption that the ‘Mozi’ botnet is on autopilot, running without human supervision since its reputed author was arrested in 2021,” said the report.

Even with declining numbers, Russian IP addresses continued to be responsible for the largest portion of remote desktop protocol (RDP) attacks.

“Russia was also the country that was most targeted by ransomware, with some of the attacks being politically or ideologically motivated by the war,” said Roman Kovac, Chief Research Officer at ESET.

The report also examined threats mostly impacting home users.

“In terms of threats directly affecting virtual and physical currencies, a web skimmer known as Magecart remains the leading threat going after online shoppers’ credit card details,” said Kovac.
