Google Cloud CEO reveals new plans for metaverse, Web 3.0

0

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian on Tuesday revealed the company’s plans for metaverse and Web 3.0, including a new partnership with leading cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase which has selected Google Cloud to build advanced exchange and data services.

Google last year announced Project Starline, a technology project that enables coworkers to feel like they are together, even when they are cities apart.

It creates a 3D model of a person, making it feel like you are sitting with someone in the same room — not at the other end of a video call.

Kurian said during the ‘Google Cloud Next 2022’ event that after thousands of hours of testing in their own offices, including demos with enterprise partners, “we’re seeing promising results”.

“Today, we’re announcing our next phase of testing with an early access program with enterprise partners such as Salesforce, T-Mobile, and others. Starting this year, we’ll be deploying units in select partner offices for regular testing,” Kurian informed.

Google is also helping Web 3.0 founders and developers with scalability, reliability, security, and data, so they can spend the bulk of their time on innovation.

“We’re announcing a new partnership with Coinbase, which has selected Google Cloud to build advanced exchange and data services. We will also enable select customers to pay for cloud services via select cryptocurrencies by using Coinbase Commerce,” said Google Cloud CEO.

The company also announced new innovations in Google Workspace.

In Google Meet, “we’re taking it a step further with new capabilities, including adaptive framing with AI-powered cameras from Huddly and Logitech that lets everyone in a conference room be seen clearly, and speaker spotlight, which enables presenters to better engage their audience by embedding their video directly in Google Slides,” Kurian announced.

“Beyond meetings, we’re helping teams have more authentic and expressive communications with custom emojis and inline threaded conversations for Google Chat,” he added.

Google said the smart canvas experience is also getting richer with custom building blocks in Google Docs, enabling companies to build their own templates that can be easily accessed by all users.

IND v SA, 3rd ODI: India clinch series win with seven-wicket victory over South Africa

0

Opener Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer made short work of a paltry chase of 100 as India won the ODI series decider with a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over South Africa at the Arun Jaitley Stadium here on Tuesday.

After Kuldeep Yadav (4/18), Shahbaz Ahmed (2/32), and Washington Sundar (2/15) shared eight wickets between themselves to bowl the Proteas for just 99, Gill made 49 while Iyer remained unbeaten on 28 to complete the chase in 19.2 overs and clinch the series 2-1.

Gill switched to his attacking mode by pulling over the keeper for four in the opening over. In the next over, Shikhar Dhawan got off the mark with a creamy drive-through extra cover for four off Lungi Ngidi. After cutting Jansen past the slip cordon, Gill then wowed the fans with a well-timed on-drive off Ngidi, beating mid-on to pick another four.

When Jansen dropped short, Gill punched easily past cover before bringing out the short-arm jab through mid-wicket with panache to collect a brace of fours. Gill’s timing continued to be top-notch when he superbly placed the pull-off Anrich Nortje wide of mid-wicket for four.

But a mix-up on the first ball of the seventh over saw Dhawan being run-out for eight. Ishan Kishan brought out ferocious fours through point and square leg before Bjorn Fortuin got one to turn in and take a thin edge behind the keeper.

Shreyas Iyer joined the boundary-hitting party by smashing Fortuin for a brace of powerful fours hit straight down the ground. Gill hit two more fours, including a crunchy drive through the gap at extra cover, while Iyer ramped wide of the keeper to collect another four and put India on the verge of a series win.

Though Gill has trapped lbw by Ngidi, Iyer finished off the chase in style with a six slammed down the ground to clinch a series win for India.

Brief scores:

South Africa 99 all out in 27.1 overs (Heinrich Klassen 34, Janneman Malan 15; Kuldeep Yadav 4/18, Washington Sundar 2/15) lost to India (Shubman Gill 49, Shreyas Iyer 28 not out, Bjorn Fortuin 1/20, Lungi Ngidi) by seven wickets

Video games may trigger potentially lethal heart rhythm problems in children

0

Video games can precipitate life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias in susceptible children whose predisposition may have been previously unrecognized, says a new study.

The study authors, including lead author Claire M. Lawley from The Heart Centre for Children in Australia, documented an uncommon, but distinct pattern among children who lose consciousness while playing electronic (video) games.

“Video games may represent a serious risk to some children with arrhythmic conditions; they might be lethal in patients with predisposing, but often previously unrecognized arrhythmic conditions,” said Lawley.

“Children who suddenly lose consciousness while electronic gaming should be assessed by a heart specialist as this could be the first sign of a serious heart problem.”

For the study, the team performed a systematic review of the literature and initiated a multisite international outreach effort to identify cases of children with a sudden loss of consciousness while playing video games.

Across the 22 cases they found, multiplayer war gaming was the most frequent trigger. Some children died following cardiac arrest.

Subsequent diagnoses of several heart rhythm conditions put the children at continuing risk. Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) and congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS) types 1 and 2 were the most common underlying causes.

There was a high incidence of potentially relevant genetic variants (63 percent) among the patients, which has significant implications for their families.

In some cases, investigating a child who lost consciousness during video gaming led to many family members being diagnosed with a critical familial heart rhythm problem.

“Families and healthcare teams should think about safety precautions around electronic gaming in children who have a condition where dangerous fast heart rhythms are a risk,” noted Lawley.

The investigators attributed adrenergic stimulation to the emotionally charged electronic gaming environment as the pathophysiological basis for this phenomenon.

Amazon to invest over 1 bn euros to electrify delivery fleet in Europe

0

E-commerce giant Amazon has announced that it will invest more than one billion euros to further electrify its transportation fleet across Europe over the next five years.

The company said it is using thousands of zero-emission vehicles across its European operations, and this investment will add thousands more, accelerating Amazon’s progress toward becoming net-zero carbon by 2040 — 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement.

“Our transportation network is one of the most challenging areas of our business to decarbonize, and to achieve net-zero carbon will require a substantial and sustained investment,” said Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO.

Amazon has more than 3,000 electric vans delivering packages to customers across Europe and expects to grow its fleet to more than 10,000 by 2025.

“Deploying thousands of electric vans, long-haul trucks, and bikes will help us shift further away from the traditional fossil fuels,” he said in a statement late on Monday.

The investment is also intended to drive innovation across the industry and encourage more public charging infrastructure, which will help enable the broader transportation industry to more quickly reduce emissions.

Amazon has launched micro-mobility hubs in more than 20 cities across Europe, including London, Munich, and Paris, and expects to double that figure by the end of 2025.

Micro-mobility hubs are smaller, centrally-located delivery stations.

Electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs) are a promising technology, but eHGV production and charging infrastructure availability are limited.

Amazon today has five eHGVs on the road in the UK and will have 20 on the road in Germany by the end of this year.

To power its eHGVs, the company said it will build hundreds of specialized fast chargers across its European facilities, allowing the company to charge the vehicles in approximately two hours.

What endears Big B to Indian families

Copying film actors and stars is nothing new, but when parents and elders tell you to learn from one is something surprising. Rarely does one come across a personality from the film industry whom the common families love to present as an example before the youngsters, in particular? Amitabh Bachchan fits this idea for a typical Indian family that loves to cling on to benevolent values and duties.

Big B, for millions in India, represents the epitome of humanity, simplicity but full of grace, patience, kind-heartedness, and above all so much rooted to culture and yet open for change. This is best manifested by the immense popularity of his KBC show. The fact that there were other stars, who tried to anchor the show and those similar to it could not last long, proves Big B’s aura to pull the audience with his modesty, both in words and deeds.

At an age when most retire to a very quiet and uneventful phase which is mostly spent in and out of hospitals and with doctor’s advice, this tall man amazes the young and old with his energy, dedication, and passion. It is not that he has no ailments, but his strength and never-diminishing will do is what sets him apart from the rest. Sitting in the KBC chair, he is a friend to all contestants, humbly treating all and making the people around him feel that they are king-like.

What endears Bachchan to all, especially the middle class is the way he approaches people. All women are Devis to him and their mothers as Mataji, no matter whether the Mataji may be half his age and a similar goes for the men, who are ‘sajano (gentlemen)’. He uses “aap” for all and even though the person may be like his grandson, it is never “tu” for anyone. It is “aabhar (thankful)”, and “abhinandan (greetings)”, etc. words that parents and elders want the children to learn. Whenever he mentions his parents, there is a kind of reverence that his expressions and words manifest. This is something that touches people’s hearts making them feel that he is real and not just a makeup-laden actor.

Big B has seen his popularity soar with the TV show at an age when most of his counterparts have very little work on hand or the common 80-year-old crowd has almost no dreams to pursue. He had his share of initial ups and downs, but ‘Zanjeer’ in 1973 catapulted him out of nowhere to the big league and the youth discovered their agitative emotions in him. The ‘Angry Man’ became the symbol of the then-restless youth. The 1970s, ’80 and a bit of 1990s were his, but it was the 2000s that saw him again come up after a series of failed ventures and miserably flopped movies.

When all had written him off, he was again catapulted from the depths of failures to the national stage, first through KBC and then a series of movies where his performances were too remarkable to go unnoticed. Amitabh Bachchan was back in the new Avatar, the Big B of Bollywood.

A child in ‘Paa’, the nagging father in ‘Piku’, the stubborn teacher in ‘Black’, the 102-year-old father of 75-year-old Rishi Kapoor in comic ‘102 Not Out’, or the striking role of a retired lawyer in ‘Pink’. These are just a few, there are so many others like the ‘Sarkar’, etc.

Each of these roles is a masterpiece, with a certain message. ‘Pink’ gave the voice to millions of women, who got the phenomenal statement in that conspicuous word “No”, which the retired lawyer so effectively uttered during the courtroom scene. “No means no” — the three words struck a chord with young women who want to enjoy life as individuals with liberty. The courtroom drama was well appreciated and Amitabh Bachchan as lawyer Deepak forces one to face up to some uncomfortable truths of society.

Before ‘Pink’, ‘Baghban’ touched the raw nerve of the people which showed how elders are treated as a burden by their children. Many related themselves to the movie characters.

If the ’70s and the 80’s movies of the Big B were mostly about anger, action, and show, the 2000s has seen his superb acting skills in movies, and remarkable and unparalleled hosting for the TV programme.

At an age when memory for most is failing and bone and muscle health is declining, Big B presents an example that proves it’s all about attitude and willpower.

There is no stopping this legend. He has proven that age is just a number and this is just what the people are loving him for.

On his 80th birthday, the living legend is all the more towering and humbler.

Inflation in India quite low, compared to leading economies: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that inflation in the country is much lower than that in developed countries.

“Compared to developed countries, inflation is quite low, for example, the British are witnessing the worst inflation in the last 50 years, Americans are facing the highest inflation of the last 45 years, interest rates are very high… compared to those countries, the nation’s inflation is low because the buoyant economy, our country’s economy is very vibrant,” he said at an event in Jamnagar, where he laid the foundation stone and dedicated projects worth Rs 1,448 crore in the district.

He appreciated the demolition work carried out along the coast by the Gujarat government.

The Prime Minister also dedicated the Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran irrigation link 7, which carries Narmada water for drinking.

He recalled the services of the erstwhile Jadeja dynasty to society and the country, noting how then ruler Digvijaysinh Jadeja gave shelter to Polish children during World War 2, because of which India-Poland relations are strengthened.

About the oil refinery and oil economy of Jamnagar, he remarked that every citizen would be proud of the fact that crude oil is refined on this very land. Modi also said that the double-engine government of the Centre and the state has continuously worked for the industrial and infrastructural development of the state.

The U Mumba raiders tread carefully in the last few minutes as the team eventually closed out a comprehensive victory.

National Games: After failing in two sports, Ankit Sharma makes a mark in boxing

0

After failing to make an impression in two other sports, Haryana’s Ankit Sharma decided to take up boxing as his profession. The move paid rich divided as Ankit on Monday stormed into the men’s flyweight semifinals in the ongoing 36th National Games here.

First, he took up skating but the National Championship silver medallist had to leave it as he fell down during an event and returned home with broken teeth. Then, he tried his hand at taekwondo. But despite his best efforts, he could not shed the extra kilos, and also withdrew from the sport.

Determined to give his son a sports life, Rampat Sharma, who manages a construction business, decided to take him to Rohtas Kumar, a coach at a nearby Boxing Academy in Sonipat.

“Initially, I put him into skating. He won two silver medals in junior-level competitions in Bhiwani. Later, in another competition, he slipped and returned home with a couple of broken teeth. I found the sport too dangerous for the child and decided to take him to taekwondo. I wanted him to lose some weight. But after a few weeks I couldn’t find any positive results,” Rampat revealed.

“He was around 4 or 5 when I decided to put him in boxing. I decided to take him to the coach who has taken care of his career since then,” he added.

For coach Rohtas Kumar, the 2019 Khelo India Youth Games gold medallist, was one of his most hardworking wards.

“He came to me when he was around 6 years. He was a chubby kid but was very disciplined from the beginning. Even after winning a medal, he wouldn’t go overboard with his celebrations or stop his training. He’s one of the very few kids who wouldn’t let me rest even on Sundays,” the coach recalled.

Ankit Sharma missed the Asian Championships trials last month due to an injury in his left shoulder. Now back to full fitness, he has looked impressive in the initial rounds.

A gold medallist at the 2022 Inter-University Games, Ankit will be up against Punjab’s Sparsh Kumar in the semifinals of the men’s flyweight 51kg weight division. Kumar expressed confidence in his ward’s chances of winning the gold but cautioned Ankit against any complacencies, the organizers informed in a press release on Monday.

“Everyone comes prepared. It will be foolish to take the opponent lightly. But Ankit has the potential to clinch the gold medal at the National Games, this will boost his confidence, going forward,” he said.

After the National Games, Ankit will be returning to the national camp to prepare for the upcoming Senior National Boxing Championships in December. He also has one eye on the Asian Games and the World Championships, which will also serve as a qualifying event for the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Mustard oil producers urge FM to remove stock limit on oilseeds

0

The Mustard Oil Producers Association of India (MOPA) has urged Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to remove the stock limit on oilseeds and allow futures trading in this important commodity.

A representation in this regard was given to Sitharaman by the association on Monday, which said that farmers have toiled hard to increase the production of oilseeds following which the import of edible oil came down to 135 lakh tonnes from 150 lakh tonnes.

The MOPA pointed out that in the last four months, the prices of edible oil have fallen by 40-45 percent and are now almost at pre-pandemic levels.

“This means that the price of soyabean seeds, which was selling at around Rs 9,500 a quintal last year, is now selling at Rs 4,500 a quintal. The situation is similar with mustard. It is currently selling at Rs 6,000 a quintal vis-a-vis Rs 8,500 a quintal last year. This is creating hardship for farmers and they are not eager for sowing of oilseeds,” the representation to the Finance Minister said.

In view of the difficulties being faced by the farmers, MOPA has urged the Finance Minister to take necessary action and prevent the oilseed growers to shift to other crops.

Moreover, it added, the stock limits imposed by the government on edible oil and oilseeds are adding to the woes of the edible oils sector. Several factories have closed down in the country, creating job losses.

The government, the MOPA in its representation said, should immediately remove the stock limit on oilseeds and permit futures trading in mustard, soyabean, soya oil, and crude palm oil.

Stock limit on oil and oilseeds was imposed in February 2022 for two months, which was later extended till December 2022.
