Bangladesh inflation soars to 10-year high

0

Inflation in Bangladesh accelerated to 9.52 percent in August, the highest in 10 years, mainly driven by higher food prices, according to official data.

In addition, the country’s overall inflation eased slightly to 9.10 percent in September, Xinhua news agency quoted Planning Minister MA Mannan as saying.

Data published by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) showed that food inflation soared to 9.94 percent in August, the highest since April of 2012, and eased slightly to 9.08 percent in September.

Non-food items inflation, however, increased to 9.13 percent in September from 8.85 percent in August.

Due to higher food prices amid uncertainties stemming from the Russia-Ukraine war, Mannan said inflation has been on an upward trend over the past several months in Bangladesh.

He stressed the need for bolstering food production domestically to rein in soaring food prices.

Mannan, however, expressed his satisfaction with the decrease in CPI in September, saying it’s good news for the government as it tried to rein in inflation in line with the budgetary target.

In June, the country unveiled a record nearly 7 trillion takas ($70 billion) national budget for the 2022-23 fiscal year starting in July and the government said it is committed to containing the rising trend of inflation by addressing inconsistencies between supply and demand.

According to the budget proposal, Bangladesh is targeting an average inflation rate of 5.6 percent in the new fiscal year.

Samsung says will roll out 5G software update by mid-November in India

0

Samsung India on Wednesday said it will roll out the software update for its vast portfolio of 5G devices in the country by the middle of next month.

The company said in a statement to the media that it is currently working with operator partners for a seamless roll-out of the 5G experience for users.

“We are working closely with our operator partners and are committed to rolling out OTA updates across all our 5G devices by the middle of the November 2022, enabling Indian consumers to experience 5G seamlessly,” a Samsung India spokesperson told media.

“Samsung has pioneered 5G technology development since 2009 and took the leading role in standardising 5G technology globally,” the company spokesperson added.

In India, Samsung has the widest portfolio of 5G devices.

The announcement came as the government convened a meeting of handset manufacturers and telecom service providers on Wednesday to ensure a smooth transition towards the new technology.

Prioritizing software upgrades would enable the early adoption of 5G in India.

Airtel and Jio have rolled out their 5G services in key metros in a phased manner. There are no 5G rollout plans from Vodafone-Idea yet.

India is home to more than 500 million smartphone users and over 100 million users with 5G-ready smartphones wish to upgrade to a 5G subscription in 2023, according to the latest Ericsson report.

The study said that Indian smartphone users are willing to pay a 45 percent premium for a plan bundled with novel experiences, which could be a delight for Internet service providers ready with 5G.

However, there are multiple challenges ahead for telecom service providers to meet the roll-out deadlines.

Twitter asks for birthdate from users to watch sensitive content

0

With an aim to prevent minors from viewing inappropriate material, Twitter is asking users to verify their birthdates for viewing sensitive content.

According to TechCrunch, the micro-blogging site is gradually rolling out a feature to restrict sensitive tweets unless users have a birthdate attached to their accounts and are over 18.

“We are constantly iterating on our work to give people more choice and control over their experience, as well as to make Twitter safer for everyone,” a company spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“We are slowly rolling out a feature to aid in restricting certain sensitive content from people who are under 18 years old or have not submitted their date of birth.”

Several users noted that the microblogging platform had asked them to mention their birthdates for seeing specific tweets over the past few days.

The platform did not clarify if it is rolling out the feature globally. Plus, users have raised questions about the company’s privacy practices, as the prompt to enter the birthdate to access sensitive content says the data might be used for targeted ads.

The broad categories covered by Twitter’s sensitive content policy include explicit content, graphic violence, excessive gore, and hateful images.

Although the company doesn’t prohibit explicit content, it does request that users who upload it designate it as sensitive and adjust their account settings accordingly.

See all the qualities of a leader in Hasaranga; he’s very similar to Malinga: Jayawardene

0

Legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene has said he sees all the qualities of a leader in young allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga, who has made the cricket world take notice of his talent through his performances in the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup in the UAE and the recently-concluded Asia Cup.

Hasaranga surprised one and all in the 2021 T20 World Cup by picking up 16 wickets to finish as the top wicket-taker in the event. He carried that form into the new year, playing a key role in the island nation’s success in the Asia Cup in the UAE.

The 25-year-old was the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with nine scalps and also chipped in with 66 runs, including 36 and 3/27 in the final against Pakistan and guiding the side to the title in the UAE. Jayawardene also drew parallels between Hasaranga meteoric rise and that of Sri Lanka’s pace great Lasith Malinga.

“In the last 12 months, he (Hasaranga) has shown how mature he is — not just as a bowler but with the bat as well. In tough situations, he has really come and delivered,” Jayawardene said on The ICC Review.

“But as a leader in that group, even if he doesn’t have the title as the vice-captain or the captain or anything like that, but underneath all of that he has become a leader who all the young guys look up to.”

Jayawardene has known Hasaranga since he was a 19-year-old, thanks to former team-mate Chaturanga de Silva, Hasaranga’s brother, according to ICC.

“To be honest, his brother was actually playing cricket while we were playing cricket as well,” Jayawardene said. “So Wanindu was much younger, was playing Under-19 cricket when we were finishing off and then he started playing first-class cricket.

“We always knew that this guy can bowl and bat, but we never knew the quality of bowler he could turn out to be. I mean initially, he didn’t have the accuracy but he always had some X-factor about him, how he went about things. That’s where Sri Lanka invested in him when he was quite young, especially in white-ball cricket.”

Jayawardene added he saw a lot of similarities between Hasaranga and Malinga — both in the way they started off quietly and then blossomed into lynchpin of the Sri Lankan side.

“The way he has blossomed… he’s also from down south, quite close to where Lasith was (Galle) and they have similar mannerisms,” Jayawardene added.

“The way they both came out, they started their careers quietly — you know, sat in the corner of the dressing room — and little by little they grew. The hairstyles change, the tattoos came out, and the whole thing.

“It (Hasaranga’s development) is quite similar to how Lasith became who Lasith was, and that’s how I see the way Wanindu has blossomed as a player.”

The biggest similarity between the two is their fierce competitiveness, added Jayawardene. “The most important thing is, once they cross the field, like Lasith, he is a competitor — that’s what I love about him,” Jayawardene said.

Shaheen Afridi up for selection for T20 World Cup warm-up games after prolonged injury absence

0

Pakistan will have the services of their pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi for the two warm-up games against England and Afghanistan ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia after he missed the Asia Cup in the UAE, the seven-match T20I series against England and the Tri-series currently underway in New Zealand due to a right-knee ligament injury.

The young pace bowler, who wrecked India in Pakistan’s 10-wicket win against the arch-rivals in the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE, will join the Babar Azam-led squad in Australia after undergoing a rehabilitation program under the supervision of the PCB Medical Advisory Committee.

The two warm-up games are scheduled on October 17 and 19 respectively, following which the team will play India in the blockbuster Super 12 match on October 23 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“I am super excited at the prospect of re-joining the national side for the T20 World Cup and playing my part in the campaign,” Shaheen was quoted as saying by ICC. “It has been a difficult period for me to be away from the game and the team I love the most, and not be part of some grueling and exciting matches.

“I have been bowling six to eight overs trouble-free for the past 10 days with full run-up and pace. While I have enjoyed bowling and batting in the nets, nothing can replace the feel of a match environment and I can’t wait to be in that setting,” added Afridi.

Shaheen’s match fitness will be assessed by the team management during the two warm-up matches. Shaheen Afridi had departed for London to complete rehabilitation following an injury to the right knee ligament.

“It has been a rigorous and challenging rehabilitation program, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it. To be honest, I am feeling fitter than ever before and can’t wait to wear the playing kit,” he added.

PM Modi to visit Rajasthan on November 1

0

Rajasthan BJP office bearers on Tuesday called a meeting at the Rajasthan BJP headquarters in Jaipur to discuss preparations for the proposed visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the state on November 1.

Officials said that PM Modi will address a large public meeting at Mangarh Dham in the tribal district of Banswara.

Mangarh is situated on a hill near Anandpuri in the Banswara district on the Rajasthan-Gujarat border.

Assembly elections in Gujarat are due this year while Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh will go to polls in 2023.

In such a situation, the meeting of Modi’s Mangarh will also play a big role in forming a new political equation in the tribal belt of the three states, namely Gujarat, MP, and Rajasthan.

Those who attended the meeting on Tuesday included state in-charge and national general secretary Arun Singh, co-in-charge Vijaya Rahatkar, state president Satish Poonia, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, MP C.P. Joshi, deputy leader of opposition Rajendra Rathod, MLA Vasudev Devnani and senior party leaders.

Rajasthan Deputy Leader of Opposition Rajendra Rathod told newsmen that Mangarh is the land where the freedom struggle started. “Now the visit of PM Modi will offer rich tributes to those who sacrificed their lives and will make people aware of this lost part of history,” he added.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said that in wake of the proposed meeting of PM Narendra Modi to Mangarh Dham, the state BJP office bearers meeting was called on Tuesday.

“PM Narendra Modi’s programme will be held in Mangarh Dham. In this Dham, 1500 Bhils were martyred in a single day by the bullets of the British. Now, if the PM will do a program in their memory, then the program will be bigger and the message will also be bigger,” he said.

For many decades, there has been a demand that Mangarh Dham should be given the status of a national monument.

IND v SA, 3rd ODI: Performing against a good team gives you a lot of confidence, says Siraj

0

India pacer Mohammed Siraj was among the few players who had his reputation in ODI cricket enhanced from the 2-1 series win over South Africa. In the three-match series, Siraj picked five wickets, including two in Tuesday’s comprehensive seven-wicket victory in New Delhi, in the series decider where South Africa was bowled out for just 99, to be adjudged Player of the Series.

“Performing against a good team gives you a lot of confidence. I had to take responsibility. I try to figure out the right lengths at the start of the innings. As a fast bowler, you need that fire and passion inside you. Happy with my performance, and happy to get this Player of the Series award,” said Siraj in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Shubman Gill, whose stroke-filled 49 made short work of India’s chase of 100, admitted to being disappointed over being trapped lbw when India was just a couple of runs away from completing the chase. But Gill, who made 80 runs in three innings, was pleased with India’s bounce-back ability after losing the first ODI in Lucknow by nine runs.

“Quite disappointed by the way I got out. But all learnings from the series – the way we were down and the way we came back were tremendous. The bowlers did a great job in this series. Really pleasing series for us. There were a lot of young players including myself.”

“The way we came back showed we have the character that it takes. The talk was just to express ourselves and trust the process. Doesn’t matter what the result is. Exciting times for us with the 50-over Asia Cup coming up. And the WC being here in India (next year), definitely a lot of excitement around.”

Indian-origin Sikh on trial for $10.4mn crypto bungle in Melbourne

0

An Indian-origin Sikh and his partner, who received $10.4 million from a cryptocurrency company by mistake, will face trial in Australia over allegations that they spent the money on items including a $1.2 million house.

Jatinder Singh, 37, and his partner, Thevamanogari Manivel, 40, appeared by video link from prison in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where they were committed to stand trial over theft and other charges, the Canberra Times reported.

Crypto.com intended to refund Manivel $100 but she was erroneously transferred $10,474,143. The company noticed its mistake when an audit was conducted in December 2021.

A subsequent probe found that an employee in Bulgaria, who processed the refund in May 2021, had incorrectly entered $10.4 million into an Excel spreadsheet.

Even though that Crypto.com account was in Singh’s name, the transfer was sent to Manivel’s account as he used her bank card to buy cryptocurrency, the Melbourne Magistrates Court was told.

Singh allegedly thought he won the money after being sent a notification from the Crypto.com app about a competition. This was also what he told Manivel, a Malaysian national.

Investigations have since revealed that $4 million of the money was allegedly transferred to an offshore bank account with other amounts spent on items including a $1.2 million home in Craigieburn and three other properties, a car, art, furniture, and gifts to friends in Melbourne of more than $1 million each, a report in The Age said.

Manivel, presently out on bail, was arrested at Melbourne Airport in March 2022 while allegedly trying to fly home to Malaysia on a one-way ticket with about $11,000 in cash.

The couple will face directions hearing in the County Court on November 8.
