Women’s Asia Cup: Sri Lanka to face India in final after edging Pakistan by one run in last-ball thriller

0

Sri Lanka on Thursday edged Pakistan by one run in a last-ball thriller of the second semifinal of the Women’s Asia Cup at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium (SICS) on Thursday to set up a meeting with India in the final of the multi-nation event on Saturday.

Needing nine runs to win from the last over, which became three runs off the final ball, Nida Dar was run-out while attempting to take a second run, as Pakistan managed to make 121/6 in their 20 overs, falling just a run short of Sri Lanka’s 122/6 in 20 overs.

Electing to bat first, though captain Chamari Athapaththu fell for ten early in the innings, other batters stepped up when it mattered the most. There was a 50-run partnership between Harshitha Madavi (35 off 41 balls, one four) and Nilakshi de Silva (14 off 27 balls) for the third wicket.

Apart from the duo, opener Anushka Sanjeewani made 26 off 21 balls, which included one four and one six. For Pakistan, left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu bagged figures of 3/17 while spinners Sadia Iqbal, Nida Dar, and right-arm fast bowler Aiman Anwer took one wicket each.

Chasing 123, Pakistan’s openers Muneeba Ali and Sidra Amin shared a 31-run stand, before the former ran herself out on the first ball of the fourth over. Captain Bismah Maroof joined Sidra and the pair added a 16-run partnership for the second wicket before the latter gave a catch to a diving short third man while playing a reverse sweep off Inoka Ranaweera on the last ball of the seventh over.

Pakistan was in a spot of bother when they lost Omaima Sohail in the 11th over. But Bismah joined forces with Nida for a 42-run stand for the fourth wicket. Bismah was going strong and leading the chase for her team before being castled for 42 off 41 balls, laced with four fours.

Bismah’s dismissal gave a ray of hope to Sri Lanka to make a comeback in the match. They did make full use of that chance and restricted Pakistan to 121/6, with Nida making a run-a-ball 26, and hitting one four, but couldn’t her team to the final of the Women’s Asia Cup. For Sri Lanka, Inoka bagged 2/17, while Sugandika Kumari and Kavisha Dilhari had a scalp each as the side entered the Women’s Asia Cup final after 14 years.

Brief Scores:

Sri Lanka 122/6 in 20 overs (Harshitha Madavi 35, Anushka Sanjeewani 26; Nashra Sandhu 3/17) beat Pakistan 121/6 in 20 overs (Bismah Maroof 42, Nida Dar 26; Inoka Ranaweera 2/17) by one run

India IT spending shows resilience despite global headwinds: Report

0

Despite strong global headwinds, Indian IT spending is expected to grow by 13.8 percent this year, down from 25.3 percent in 2021, an IDC report said on Thursday.

The overall drop in IT spending growth considers the recovery sentiment pervasive in Q1 2022 and the drag due to the weakening economic scenario in Q2 onwards.

According to the report, the contraction in IT spending is due to reduced consumer technology spending. Enterprise technology spending is stable as enterprises continue to protect their budgets and are managing by reallocating resources to needed items.

“Based on the current forecast of a mild global recession, we expect IT spending of Indian enterprises to demonstrate resilience in the short term,” said Vinay Gupta, Research Director, IT Spending Guides, IDC Asia/Pacific.

“Indian enterprises continue to focus on their digital innovation initiatives, business operations resiliency, and customer experience programs. However, enterprises are keeping a sharp eye on global events,” he added.

The post-pandemic recovery of the Indian economy in late 2021 and early 2022 faced multiple headwinds. Inflation, global geopolitical tensions, devaluation of the rupee against the US dollar, a slowdown in global growth, and increasing interest rates are risks to economic growth.

“The risk of recession worldwide has continued to rise amid increasing inflation and the expectation of a tightening monetary policy. The Indian economy faces similar challenges and enterprises are turning cautious during these uncertain times,” said the IDC.

Expectations are that India’s GDP growth will be at risk in 2023 given the global headwinds, slowing down IT spending growth.

A lot will depend on RBI’s monetary policy going forward and the government’s public CAPEX push, industrial capacity utilization, and improvement in the infrastructure sector said the report.

PKL 9: Emerging star Jai Bhagwan fulfills his father’s dream

0

The only player from the Khelo India University Games 2022 to be picked for the vivo Pro Kabaddi League Season 9, Jai Bhagwan has set the stage on fire with his performances for U Mumba in their opening two matches at the Shree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru.

The 18-year-old raider has scored 11 points in the competition so far. However, Bhagwan has fought through immense hardship in the lead-up to the vivo Pro Kabaddi League.

Speaking about his journey post being part of the Gold Medal-winning Kota University team at the Khelo India University Games 2022, Bhagwan said, “It was a difficult time for us when my father passed away. I had reduced my practice sessions that time, but my elder brother told me to keep practicing and keep working hard.”

The raider further added, “My father wanted to watch me play on television. I have fulfilled one of his dreams. He also wanted me to play for India. My mother was very happy to watch me on television.”

When asked about how he has been able to put up scintillating performances right from the word go, the player from Rajasthan said, “First, I played in the Khelo India University Games in April-May this year. Then we trained really well during our pre-season camp. Our coach told us not to be worried about anything. I have been able to play freely in the Vivo PKL season because of the U Mumba management.”

Bhagwan also said, “I am really happy to be playing in the Vivo Pro Kabaddi League. And I am even happier to be part of the U Mumba team because this franchise’s management is really good. I was a bit nervous before my first game, but our coach gave me confidence.”

The raider also expressed how he stumbled upon the game of kabaddi, “I used to play Kho kho in the beginning then I changed schools. In my new school, kabaddi was being played and that’s where I attained an interest in the game. The PT teacher at my school took us for different tournaments and then I kept rising through the ranks.”

Jai Bhagwan will be next seen in action when U Mumba takes on Tamil Thalaivas on Friday.

Economic growth in India, China, Indonesia will be less affected: S&P Global Ratings

0

Growth in large Asia Pacific economies like China, India, and Indonesia will be less affected as their economies are more domestically oriented, said S&P Global Ratings on Thursday.

However, slower global economic growth and external demand will weigh on economic activity, it added.

“We see a significant risk that the Russia-Ukraine military conflict drags on, exacerbating Europe’s energy crisis, while at the same time interest rates in developed markets may have to rise even more sharply than in our base case to mitigate broadening inflation pressures,” said Jose Perez Gorozpe, S&P Global Ratings Emerging Markets Head of Credit Research.

“This could result in a deeper-than-expected recession in Europe and, to a lesser extent, the US, with a concomitant rise in unemployment from historically low levels,” Google added.

According to S&P Global Ratings, it has developed a downside scenario taking into account the increasing risks and the potential for materialization, with a roughly one-in-three likelihood of occurring.

In Europe, this downside scenario would see high energy prices and rationing, said the global credit rating agency.

The European Central Bank would be forced to follow the Federal Reserve because of the depreciation of the euro against the US dollar, fueling imported inflation. This will lead to a eurozone recession, with the gross domestic product (GDP) contracting by 1.3 percent in 2023, and Germany suffering the largest impact.

In the US, it would result in GDP contracting by 0.3 percent in 2023, compared with a shallow recession in the first half of the year in our baseline, with marginal growth of 0.2 percent for the year, S&P Global Ratings said.

Among emerging markets (EMs), the downside scenario sees Mexico feeling the greatest impact among Latin America’s developing economies, while Poland would be the hardest hit among Europe’s EMs, largely because of its direct exposure to energy supply disruptions.

“Conditions remain fluid, and over recent weeks the UK and Germany have announced hefty support measures that could affect both our baseline and downside assumptions,” the credit rating agency said.

Amitabh Bachchan’s saved from the Bofors case, law organization has completed its 40th anniversary.

Zaiwalla & co, which was the first Indian-owned city of London legal practitioner,  completed the 40th anniversary of its formation at a reception at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum on Wednesday evening.

Film star Amitabh Bachchan and his brother Ajitabh were in Bofor’s case, The firm, which is established by Mumbai-born Sarosh Zaiwalla in 1990, dealt with that case, then it came to fame in India.

The Bachchans received illegal money to buy field guns for the Indian Army from AB Bofors, a Swedish manufacturer, in the deal, Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported. So The Bachchans had slandered the reports for defamation.

After a dramatic hearing, the Bachchans won, thereby not just exonerating themselves, but Gandhi, who on news media had been virtually accused of corruption or at least being aware of wrongdoing. He denied the charge and the matter never came to court, before being abandoned by the BJP-led government of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Gandhi was killed by a Sri Lankan Tamil suicide bomber in 1991.

More recently, Zaiwalla & Co has been in the news taking up cudgels for the Venezuelan central bank against its British counterpart the Bank of England (BoE) to reclaim $1.95 billion worth of gold deposited with the latter. The dispute will be heard on appeal by Zaiwalla in the United Kingdom’s Supreme Court. India, too, has gold in safekeeping with the BoE.

Gopi Hinduja, co-chairman of the London-based Hinduja Group, who 32 years ago asked Zaiwalla to represent the Bachchans, was the chief guest at the reception. Speaking at the function, he said: “The FTA (free trade agreement being negotiated between Britain and India) will make it very easy for Indian law firms to work here as well as British law firms to work in India.”

Among the many prominent figures who attended the celebration the one who caused the most flutter was Indian businessman Vijay Mallya, who is fighting against extradition sought by the Narendra Modi government to India. He claimed his now-defunct Kingfisher Airline – whose failure got him into difficulty – has repaid more than it owed Indian banks as a result of Indian law enforcement agencies auctioning his assets in India.

Samsung on Thursday showcased its latest updates to software and services at an annual tech conference, which it said were aimed at improving overall user experience through technology innovations.

At the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2022 in San Francisco, the South Korean tech giant unveiled the upgraded, new user interface One UI 5 for its Galaxy products and a vision for a more connected home life, partly through an expanded partnership with Google.

Samsung said the One UI 5 platform comes with new features for more personalized experiences, such as the new security and privacy dashboard that enables users to customize personal privacy settings by scanning vulnerabilities and recommending security updates.

It also comes with custom-built Modes and Routines and a Dynamic Lock screen that displays multiple visuals on Galaxy devices, reports Yonhap news agency.

Samsung’s Bixby, the voice assistant platform, has improved to answer calls on users’ behalf or share typed messages with the caller, according to the company.

Samsung said it would continue its efforts to provide “calm technology” by seamlessly connecting electronic devices.

Calm technology refers to a type of technology that requires minimal attention and work from users.

In early September, Samsung vowed to popularise its home automation platform, SmartThings, this year, in a bid to help provide a more connected and sustainable home life.

SmartThings is Samsung’s software to connect and control home appliances, with more than 230 million users worldwide.

By the end of next year, Samsung plans to make all of its home appliances Wi-Fi enabled and allow home devices from 13 different brands that belong to the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA) to be connected and controlled.

Samsung also said it has expanded its partnership with Google to remove challenges facing homeowners who use multi, different smart home platforms.

The two tech companies will release a multi-admin feature in the coming weeks that makes it easier for users to connect devices on different ecosystems and control Matter-enabled devices through SmartThings or Google Home apps on Android.

Matter’ is an open standard for innovative home technology. It enables users to set up their devices with their favorite platforms and ecosystems without changing hardware or software, according to Google.

Meta takes on The Wire again, rejects false allegations in its reports

0

Meta (formerly Facebook) has taken on The Wire publication again, saying that while it is legitimate for them to be held accountable for their content decisions, “the allegations made by The Wire are false” and the screenshots of two emails from Meta employee used in the story are “fake”.

The two articles published by the online news platform alleged that a user whose account is cross-checked can influence content decisions on Instagram without any review.

“Our cross-check system was built to prevent potential over-enforcement mistakes and to double-check cases where a decision could require more understanding or there could be a higher risk for a mistake. To be clear, our cross-check program does not grant enrolled accounts the power to automatically have the content removed from our platform,” the tech giant said in a blog post, titled “What The Wire Reports Got Wrong” published late on Wednesday.

The company said that the allegations “contain mischaracterizations of how our enforcement processes work, and rely on what we believe to be fabricated evidence in their reporting”.

The independent Oversight Board announced last October that it will review Meta’s cross-check system and provide recommendations on how it can improve it.

Meta also tried to explain what went wrong with the two articles.

“The first article claims that a cross-check account has the power to have the content removed from our platform with no questions asked. This is false. Cross-check has nothing to do with the ability to report posts to seek the removal of content. The posts in question were surfaced for review by automated systems, not user reports,” said the company.

The system is designed to ensure that the enforcement decisions related to content posted by cross-check accounts are made accurately and with additional levels of human review.

“We don’t exempt anyone from our Community Standards and remove content that violates them if we see it,” the company added.

“This article was also based on allegedly leaked screenshots from our internal tools. We believe this document is fabricated. The URL on that ‘report’ is not in use. The naming convention is one we don’t use. There is no such report,” the social network said, adding that they did not identify a user report regarding the @cringearchivist content in September as reported.

“The second story cites emails from a Meta employee — the screenshot included in the story has two emails — both are fake. There are no such emails,” the company alleged.

The same story references an internal journalist’s “watch list”.

“No such list exists”.

Meta said that they accept scrutiny of their content decisions, “but we fundamentally reject these false allegations based on what we believe to be fabricated evidence. We hope that The Wire is the victim of this hoax, not the perpetrator”.

Meta Chief Information Security Officer Guy Rosen on Tuesday slammed The Wire for publishing two stories, which, according to Rosen, were “outlandish and riddled with falsities”.

Rosen, in a Twitter thread, said that he wanted to set the record straight about two stories run this week by The Wire “with untrue claims about Meta’s content moderation operations and processes”.

Don’t take your disputes to third person, Vijay Antony tells families

Popular actor and music director Vijay Antony has urged families not to take their disputes to a third person and instead look to resolve them themselves.

Taking to Twitter, the actor wrote in Tamil, “If you have a problem in your family, as far as possible, look to keep the fight amongst yourselves. If not, leave and depart.

“Or else, fall at their feet and somehow convince them and live together. Don’t ever call a third person at any cost to resolve the issue. They will complicate things and finish the story.”

This is not the first time that Vijay Antony has made such a suggestion.

On Gandhi Jayanti this year, the actor urged his followers not to give up hard work.

He had then said, “Don’t stop working. Difficulties don’t last for the ones who work.”

On the work front, Vijay Antony has a series of films waiting to hit the screens. He has the investigative thriller ‘Kolai’, directed by Balaji Kumar, and director Suseenthiran’s ‘Valli Mayil’, a period film. He also has director C S Amudhan’s action thriller ‘Ratham’ coming up.

KCR inspects construction of work of TRS office in Delhi

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Wednesday inspected the construction of his Telangana Rashtra Samithi’s (TRS) office in New Delhi.

A week after the TRS decided to go national by changing its name to the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), party President KCR, as he is popularly known, inspected the construction of the party office at Vasant Vihar.

Accompanied by Roads and Buildings Minister V. Prashanth Reddy and other TRS leaders, KCR went around the construction site and enquired about the progress of the work.

KCR, who had attended Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav’s last rites on Tuesday, is currently campaigning in the national capital.

He is likely to meet leaders of various parties and people from various walks of life to seek their support for the BRS ahead of the formal launch of the party.

It was on September 2 last year KCR laid the foundation stone for the TRS office in the presence of his cabinet colleagues, MPs, state legislators, and several party leaders. The TRS claimed to be the first political party from south India to open its office in Delhi.

The TRS is building a three-storeyed building that will have a conference hall, library, and audio-visual theatre.

The Centre had allotted land for the TRS office in 2020 but the foundation stone laying was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The land allotment was made as per the rules, which prescribe that all political parties with a minimum of seven members in Parliament are eligible for allotment of land for their party office in Delhi.

The TRS, which has 16 members in Parliament, was allotted two plots measuring 550 square meters by the land and development office of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

It was announced then that the TRS office coming up on 1,100 square meters of land will be called Telangana Bhavan, like its state headquarters in Hyderabad. It is not immediately known if there will be a change in the name of the office consequent to TRS adopting a new name.

A general body meeting of the TRS presided over by KCR on October 5 unanimously passed a resolution changing the name of the party to BRS to expand its activities nationwide. The meeting also amended the party Constitution in this regard.

The next day, the TRS informed the Election Commission of its decision to change its name to the BRS and sought its nod for the same.

The party is reported to have taken a building on rent in Delhi to commence its activities pending the completion of the permanent building. This building is near Sardar Patel Marg.

Ireland announce Women’s while-ball squads for maiden tour of Pakistan

0

Cricket Ireland has announced their Women’s squads for the maiden white-ball tour of Pakistan that will see them play three ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25 fixtures which will be followed by three T20Is

The ODIs will be played from November 4-9, while the T20Is will be from November 12-16. All six matches will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

The visitors will arrive in Lahore on October 29 and will have four days of practice in the lead-up to the ODI series.

While Ireland and Pakistan have a history of international cricket dating back 60 years, this will be the first time a senior men’s or women’s side will have played in Pakistan.

Ireland Women and Pakistan Women first met in an international match at the 1997 Women’s World Cup, when the Irish team prevailed by 182 runs. The two sides subsequently met in a Test match in July 2000 in Dublin. They have played each other 34 times across all formats — Pakistan won 25, Ireland won 9 — the last encounter being this summer when Ireland hosted Pakistan as part of a Tri-Series that also involved Australia.

Ireland will be the fourth international cricket team to visit Pakistan in 2022 after Australia, West Indies and England men’s sides toured earlier this year.

The Ireland squad will arrive in Lahore on October 29 and hold training sessions on 31 October to 3 November.

Ireland Women captain Laura Delany said, “Since the tour to Pakistan was announced, the squad has been buzzing with excitement at being the first Irish side – male or female – to play in Pakistan.

“It’s great to see selectors have assembled a talented squad and, as we demonstrated in July when we played each other, the two sides are quite evenly balanced, so it is set for an exciting series. Home advantage may be a factor, in theory, however, I believe our squad will acclimatize quickly and will be up for the challenge.”

Said Warren Deutrom, Chief Executive of Cricket Ireland, “We have been working closely with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), security consultants, and local diplomatic services to ensure the upcoming tour is comprehensively planned out as to the health, safety, and security of players and coaches, as well as providing advice to traveling families and fans. We have also liaised with the cricket boards of countries that have recently toured and are satisfied that the welfare of our squad will be a top priority for the hosts.

“But, most of all, this is about cricket and a wonderful opportunity for our senior squad to play in such a passionate cricket-loving country as Pakistan. Ireland and Pakistan have a deep cricket bond in both women’s and men’s cricket – and we know our players are extremely excited to play there for the first time in just a few weeks.

“We also extend our sincerest thanks to the PCB for being so collegiate and proactive in hosting us for these six matches.”

The Squads:

The 15-player squads for the two formats are:

ODI squad:

Laura Delany (capt), Rachel Delaney, Amy Hunter, Shauna Kavanagh, Arlene Kelly, Gaby Lewis, Louise Little, Jane Maguire, Cara Murray, Leah Paul, Orla Prendergast, Celeste Raack, Eimear Richardson, Rebecca Stokell, Mary Waldron.

T20I squad:

Laura Delany (capt), Amy Hunter, Shauna Kavanagh, Arlene Kelly, Gaby Lewis, Louise Little, Sophie MacMahon, Jane Maguire, Cara Murray, Leah Paul, Orla Prendergast, Celeste Raack, Eimear Richardson, Rebecca Stokell, Mary Waldron.

Working with telcos to provide seamless 5G by year-end, handset makers tell govt

0

Leading mobile handset players on Wednesday said they are working with telecom service providers to release necessary 5G software updates by year-end, as the government told them to fix the gaps and ensure a seamless transition to 5G for millions in the first phase.

In a meeting, the government told the stakeholders to quickly support the new technology.

While Apple said it will roll out 5G-enabled services via an over-the-air (OTA) update for iPhones by the end of December, Samsung said it will release software updates by mid-November.

An OTA update is the wireless delivery of new software, firmware, or other data to mobile devices. Wireless carriers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) typically use over-the-air updates to deploy firmware and configure phones for use on their networks over Wi-Fi or mobile broadband.

“We are working with our carrier partners in India to bring the best 5G experience to iPhone users as soon as network validation and testing for quality and performance are completed. 5G will be enabled via a software update and will start rolling out to iPhone users in December,” Apple said in a statement.

Samsung said that it has pioneered 5G technology development since 2009 and took the leading role in standardizing 5G technology globally.

“In India, Samsung has the widest portfolio of 5G devices. We are working closely with our operator partners and are committed to rolling out OTA updates across all our 5G devices by mid-November,” a company spokesperson said.

Samsung, Apple, and Xiaomi were among the major mobile phone makers present in the meeting, which was presided over by telecom as well as IT secretaries.

“Pixel 7, 7 Pro, and Pixel 6a are 5G capable devices. We are actively working with the Indian carriers to enable functionality at the earliest,” a Google India spokesperson said in a statement.

Muralikrishnan B, President, Xiaomi India, told IANS that currently, 100 percent of its 5G smartphone models support the NSA network out of the box, wherein users can choose ‘Prefer 5G’ in network settings to connect to the 5G network”.

“We have already started rolling out the FOTA (firmware over-the-air) updates to select devices like Xiaomi 12 Pro 5G, Mi 11X Pro, Xiaomi 11i, Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge, among others. Most devices will start receiving OTA updates by Diwali,” Muralikrishnan added.

Airtel and Jio have rolled out their 5G services in key metros in a phased manner. Vodafone-Idea is yet to reveal its 5G roll-out plans.

San Diego Open: Zheng Qinwen sets Swiatek rematch after Muguruza retires

0

World No.1 Iga Swiatek will start her San Diego Open campaign against Tokyo finalist Zheng Qinwen after the Chinese star advanced to the second round after Garbine Muguruza was forced to retire, down 5-0 in the first set, due to illness.

A finalist at the Toray Pan Pacific Open two weeks ago, No.28 Zheng fell in the final round of qualifying to Camila Osorio, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(3). She gained entry into the main draw on Tuesday as a lucky loser, after Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina withdrew earlier in the day due to illness.

“Actually, yesterday I could also sign in as a lucky loser but I didn’t choose to sign in because I was having an issue with my body,” Zheng was quoted as saying by the WTA website

“Today I was feeling better so I decided with my team to sign in as a lucky loser. I was lucky to get into the draw and I had a good match today. To get into the next round, it’s double lucky,” she said.

Zheng’s victory sets up a French Open rematch against Swiatek. The two young stars faced off for the first time in Paris this spring, with Zheng taking the first set before losing 6-7(5), 6-0, 6-2 in the Round of 16. It was the only set Swiatek lost during her dominant title run.

Zheng’s first-set performance left a big impression on Swiatek, who was in the midst of her 37-match win streak at the time.

“It’s hard for me to say how she plays on a hard court because I didn’t really watch her matches,” Swiatek said in Paris.

Zheng struggled physically in the match, but the 20-year-old walked away confident that she was ready to challenge the best in the game.

“She’s a good mover, she has a good slide on hard courts,” Zheng said. “She has a good forehand and spin, she opens the court very well with the forehand cross.”

“It will be a tough match. She will not give the match easy away. I think the key to playing against her is to fight and play until the very end. Just play my game, she will play hers, and then we’ll see the fight from each other,” Zheng added.

WhatsApp now a spam factory, 1 in 2 Indian swamped with promotional messages

Meta-owned WhatsApp has become a spam factory as more than one in two Indians now say that they are facing four or more spam messages each day, a report showed on Wednesday.

Despite clear norms laid by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on unsolicited communication, consumers still face unwanted calls, SMS (short messaging services), and Whatsapp messages from vendors, telemarketers, banks, insurance brokers, car dealers, pathology labs, property, and other investment agents, among others.

About 68 percent of mobile subscribers, on average, receive 4 or more promotional or spam SMSs every day with every subscriber surveyed getting spam, according to the online community platform LocalCircles.

About 95 percent of Whatsapp subscribers surveyed got spam while every mobile subscriber surveyed got it.

Financial services, real estate services, and pathology services are the top sectors sending spam SMS as well as spam Whatsapp, indicating the same offenders are now spamming using both channels.

About 77 percent of mobile subscribers surveyed want the TRAI to work with telcos and enable a mark spam feature with each SMS.

There were reports that the Department of Telecommunication (DOT) has decided to levy fines ranging from Rs 1,000 per violation for zero-10 breaches, Rs 5,000 each for 10-50 violations, and Rs 10,000 each for more than 50 violations by registered telemarketers.

However, the telecom authority has not issued any notification in this regard.

“Unsolicited SMS, not to be confused with communication from government or any other authorized source, is a misuse of citizens’ personal data. Many people face issues of unwanted messages and calls made to them by fraudsters, spammers, telemarketers, despite registering on TRAI’s Do Not Call Registry (NDNS),” the findings showed.

Last year, around 93 million phone numbers registered with the TRAI’s NDNS were kept on sale on the Darknet, according to reports.

Whatsapp Business was rolled out a few years ago and in 2021, the company mandated that users of the platform must receive messages from Whatsapp Business (based on their usage of Whatsapp and parent platform Facebook) for them to continue using the platform, according to LocalCircles report.

While users resisted this initially and started using alternate platforms like Signal and Telegram, over time most gave up and accepted the revised terms.

About 77 percent said that TRAI should work with telcos to mandatorily embed mark spam in each SMS message so users can easily report spammers.

No citizen should be prosecuted under Section 66A of the IT Act: SC

The Supreme Court on Wednesday took a serious view of people still being prosecuted under Section 66A of the IT Act 2000 and directed that no citizen should be prosecuted under the provision, which was struck down as unconstitutional by it in 2015 in the Shreya Singhal case.

A bench, headed by Chief Justice U.U. Lalit and comprising Justices S. Ravindra Bhat and Ajay Rastogi said it needs no reiteration that Section 66A is found to be in violation of the Constitution and as such, no citizen can be prosecuted for violation of alleged offenses under it.

Passing a slew of directions, the top court directed the Director General of Police (DGPs) and Home Secretaries of all state governments and competent officers in union territories to direct the police force not to register any complaint with respect to violation of Section 66A.

The Centre’s counsel submitted a pan-India status report in connection with complaints under Section 66A. The bench said this suggested that despite the issue regarding the validity of Section 66A being dealt with in Shreya Singhal vs Union of India, a number of crimes and criminal proceedings still reflected the provision of Section 66A and citizens were still facing prosecution under the same.

It emphasized that after the Shreya Singhal verdict, there can be no prosecution in violation of Section 66A and if reliance is placed on Section 66A, the same should stand deleted. It added that police should not incorporate Section 66A in any crime and it should be ensured by DGPs.

And, in any government document if Section 66A is included, it has to be mentioned that it has been deleted, it added.

The top court added that this direction should apply only with reference to Section 66A and if the crime has other facets, where other offenses are also alleged, those should not be deleted.

Senior advocate Sanjay Parikh, representing the NGO People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), said that there are cases that are pending. The bench replied it can say that Section 66A should be removed.

The top court was hearing a writ petition filed by PUCL citing the issue of Section 66A IT Act being invoked despite the top court’s judgment in the Shreya Singhal case.

The NGO submitted cases were still being registered across the country under draconian Section 66A, which gave permission to police to make “arbitrary arrests” and prosecute for what the police felt was “offending and offensive” online posts, even after the provision was declared violative of both Articles 19 (free speech) and 21 (right to life) of the Constitution.

Disposing of the application filed by the PUCL, the bench added that whenever any publication, whether government, semi-government or private, about the IT Act is published and Section 66A is quoted, readers must be adequately informed that these provisions have been pronounced to be violative of Constitution by the apex court.
