Bhuvneshwar Kumar can and has been a very good finisher: Matthew Hayden

0

Despite the fifties from Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul in India’s 208/6 in the first T20I against Australia at Mohali, the hosts couldn’t defend the huge total. The thrashing of senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar by the Australian batters in the death overs has re-ignited concerns over India’s bowling having the arsenal to do well in the death overs.

In their last three T20Is where India has looked to defend and failed to do so, Bhuvneshwar has conceded 16, 14, and 19 runs (in the first T20I against Australia) in the 19th over.

With Harshal Patel ineffective with his slower balls and giving away 49 runs in his four overs, including 22 runs in the 18th over, much was expected from Bhuvneshwar to contain the run-flow in the 19th over, which he failed to do.

In the penultimate over in T20Is this year, Bhuvneshwar has leaked 97 runs at an economy rate of 12.12. But former Australia cricketer Matthew Hayden still feels that Bhuvneshwar is still adept enough to bowl the death overs for India in T20Is.

“I disagree with that, I think he can and has been a very good finisher. I think that’s his role, I mean, obviously, his role is to take wickets up front but if your skipper wants an over or two from you at the end, then he can do that,” said Hayden on ‘Match Point’ show on Star Sports.

Hayden went on to heap praise on young all-rounder Cameron Green, who smacked a 30-ball 61 for Australia while opening the batting for the first time in T20Is. Before Tuesday’s match, Green had a top score of 36 in 14 T20s and hadn’t opened the batting ever due to him being a middle-order mainstay in ODIs and Tests.

“Green, he has been a really big asset for Australian cricket for a couple of years now. He’s a genuine all-rounder. I just think he’s such a huge part of the future of Australian cricket. So it doesn’t really surprise me, he’s very capable, he’s a big man with good skills. He looked a little bit disappointing with the ball (1/46 in three overs), but it’s a tough place to bowl (on conceding 21 runs in the final over).”

With a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, Australia and India will next play in the second T20I at VCA Stadium, Nagpur on Friday.

We have got a lot of depth to find a way to chase big scores: Matthew Wade

0

Veteran Australia wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade was one of the big two pillars in the reigning world T20 champions’ successful chase of a mammoth 209 against India at the PCA Stadium, Mohali. With Australia needing 64 off 35 balls, Wade applied the perfect finishing touch with an unbeaten 45 off 21 balls to take his side over the line with four balls to spare.

The chase of 209 highlighted yet again the enviable deep batting depth that Australia has which helps them in acing chases like the one on Tuesday, which Wade pointed out.

At the same time, he felt that a lot of work was left for the visitors’ finishers like him and Tim David in the business end of the chase.

“The way that we structured up and the way that we drove the game early gave us every opportunity at the back end to win the game. Everybody that stepped out had really good intent; even (Josh) Inglis’s was a small inning but it keeps the momentum of the innings rolling.”

“(Scoring at) seven and eight (runs) through that period of kind of puts a lot of pressure on down to the back end as you need 15 an over. So as a team and Tim, I thought we really found a way to drive the game tonight, which was nice. It was a good wicket and a bit of dew came in. The outfield was beautiful as well. We have got a lot of depth to find a way to chase big scores,” said Wade in the post-match press conference.

Wade, who had plundered 41 off just 17 balls and smacked Shaheen Shah Afridi for a hat-trick of sixes in Australia’s victory in last year’s T20 World Cup semifinal, cited his previous experience of playing in India coming in handy to take his team home.

“I think it’s just playing in this country, to be honest, I’ve played enough now to understand it takes a little bit of time to find the pace of the wicket, although that wicket was a terrific wicket, terrific outfield and it’s lovely to bat on. (It) still takes a couple of balls to find your feet a little bit.”

“A young me probably would panic in that situation and try to find a boundary really quicker than I need to. But I had great confidence in that outfield, how fast was running in the wicket that was coming on. If you get bat on a few that you’re going to find a boundary enough, so (that worked).”

Wade went on to heap praise on all-rounder Cameron Green, who opened the batting in a T20 match for the very first time and impressed everyone with his 30-ball 61 in just his second T20I game for Australia. Though many were left surprised over Green opening the batting, Wade showed no such surprise.

“He impresses every time I see him, a bit like Tim (David) was in a couple of years ago for Western Australia. He was a bowler who batted nine and to see where he is now. He’s quite remarkable. But the plan was always for (Cameron) Green to open. That’s what he was going to go in.”

“The coach and captain feel like that’s the best spot for him to really find his feet at T20 level and he showed tonight that it’s going to be his spot going forward for a while. Really impressive to see a young player go out in front of the packed stadium chasing 207 (209).”

“He’d copped a bit of the tap, bowling his last over as well (where Hardik Pandya clobbered him). To turn around and give this performance these are a good sign. We feel Greeny is our top-order player; if something happens, we need to pull him for the World Cup. But yes, really impressive to see.”

YouTube to let creators monetise long-form videos with licensed music

0

Google-owned YouTube has announced a new program that will allow creators to monetize their long-form videos with licensed music in 2023.

The company has introduced ‘Creator Music’, which gives YouTube creators easy access to an ever-growing catalog of music for use in their long-form videos.

“Creators can now buy affordable, high-quality music licenses that offer them full monetizing potential — they will keep the same revenue share they’d usually make on videos without any music,” Amjad Hanif, Vice President of Creator Products, YouTube, said in a statement.

Those creators who don’t want to buy a license up front, they’ll be able to use songs and share revenue with the track’s artist and associated rights holders.

“Creator Music, currently in beta in the US and expanding to more countries in 2023, will offer a streamlined process for creators they’ll be able to instantly see the terms for their song selection,” Hanif said during the Made on YouTube event late on Tuesday.

The company said that revenue sharing is also coming to YouTube Shorts.

Beginning in early 2023, current and future YouTube Partner Programme (YPP) creators will be eligible for revenue sharing on Shorts.

“In Shorts, ads run between videos in the Shorts Feed. So, every month, revenue from these ads will be added together and used to reward Shorts creators and help cover costs of music licensing,” said the company.

From the overall amount allocated to creators, they will keep 45 percent of the revenue, distributed based on their share of total Shorts views.

“The revenue share remains the same, no matter if they use music or not,” said YouTube.
The company is also launching Super Thanks for Shorts’ in beta to thousands of creators, with a complete rollout expected next year.

Viewers can show their appreciation for their favorite Shorts, and creators can interact with their fans through purchased, highlighted Super Thanks comments.

Alex Hales smashes half-century on England return as Pakistan suffer loss in opening T20I

0

England opening batter Alex Hales, returning to the side after more than three years, blasted a half-century as the visitors defeated Pakistan by six wickets with four balls to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the seven-match T20I series at the National Stadium here.

With Pakistan and England priming for the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia, Hales’ stunning return to the international game — aided by seven boundaries — and Harry Brook’s hitting at the back end, helped England overhaul Pakistan’s 158/7 in 19.2 overs.

With Hales giving a superb account of himself in just his maiden outing for England in three-and-a-half years, the opener could well be a key player in their campaign in the T20 World Cup next month.

The opener moved England to 47/1 from the powerplay with Phil Salt (10) and Dawid Malan (20) and pushed along all the way until the 17th over, where he eventually fell to Haris Rauf.

Replacing Jonny Bairstow in the T20 World Cup squad after his freak injury, Hales, who boasts extensive domestic experience in Australia (Big Bash League) and Pakistan (Pakistan Super League), now should lead England’s tournament charge opening the batting.

Pakistan, on the other hand, was once again troubled by their lower-order batting, which again failed to fire, though the openers looked reliable.

At 87/1 at the halfway mark, the platform was set for a total of 175 or more, only for the second half of 71/6, which left the host with a below-par 158.

Babar Azam’s side scored just 38 in the final five overs, with the loss of Mohammad Rizwan (68 off 46 balls) in the 15th over preventing a late onslaught. Iftikhar Ahmed (28 off 17 balls) tried his best, though couldn’t find a partner to join him, as Shan Masood (7), Mohammad Nawaz (4), and Khushdil Shah (5) went cheaply.

Asif Ali’s heroics at last year’s T20 World Cup is fresh in the memory, though it remains unclear who will be trusted at the death in next month’s tournament.

Playing his fifth T20I, Harry Brook enjoyed his best outing so far for English, making an unbeaten 42 from 25 balls, and steering his side home in the final over. Brook looked arguably the most comfortable of the English batters on the Karachi surface, hitting seven boundaries, the last of which sealed the game.

The No.5 joined Hales with England needing eight runs per over and showed a maturity that belied both his age and experience, bringing the required rate down gradually in a calculated manner.

Brief scores:

Pakistan 158/7 in 20 overs (Mohammad Rizwan 61, Babar Azam 31; Luke Wood 3/24, Adil Rashid 2/27) lost to England 160/4 in 19.2 overs (Alex Hales 53, Harry Brook 42 not out) by six wickets.

Good to be thrown into the deep end; Pandya has to be the best in the world: Cameron Green

0

‘Player of the Match in the opening T20I against India here, Cameron Green said it was nice to be thrown into the deep end with the T20 World Cup at home less than a month away, adding that with skipper Aaron Finch batting with him at the top, it provided him with the confidence to bat freely.

Green, 23, playing in only his second T20I, scored a 30-ball 61 and also took the crucial wicket of Suryakumar Yadav just when the Indian was threatening to let loose as India made 208/6 in the allotted 20 overs at the PCA Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The tall all-rounder gave Australia the start they needed while chasing the mammoth total, before Matthew Wade (45 not out off 21 balls) finished the task with four deliveries to spare as the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Green, who is being touted as the next big name in white-ball cricket, said, “(I) kind of got thrown in the deep end a little bit but it was nice to bat with (Aaron) Finchy. He is an experienced campaigner and keeps you calm in the middle. It was kind of nice. We had the luxury of watching the Indians bat,” said Green.

Green, playing as an opener in professional cricket for the time, took India by surprise with his power-hitting, blasting eight boundaries and four sixes at a strike rate of over 203 and atoning for the disastrous final over he bowled to Hardik Pandya.

Pandya smashed Green for three back-to-back sixes. On Pandya’s batting, Green said, “Hardik played beautifully. He has to be the best in the world at what he does. It kind of gave us an idea of how to go about it (looking at the T20 World Cup).”

Australia skipper Finch said, the dew factor and his team batting second while chasing a big total, did facilitate the win.

“It was a good contest. Obviously, the dew helped us at the back end. Some really good partnerships from us. I thought the intent of all our guys, the way that they just attacked their matchups and really took it on and tried to change the momentum of the game was really good. That’s all we’re after at the moment.”

Digital rights of Chiranjeevi’s ‘Godfather’ sold for a whopping Rs 57 crore

If sources in the industry are to be believed, the digital rights of director Mohan Raja’s upcoming action entertainer, ‘Godfather’ featuring Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi and Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, have been bought by an OTT platform for a fancy sum.

Rumors in the industry suggest that the popular OTT platform, Netflix, has procured the digital rights of the film for a whopping Rs 57 crore. The deal includes both Telugu and Hindi OTT rights to the movie.

There are sky-high expectations from ‘Godfather’ as the film features two big stars from the Indian film industry.

Megastar Chiranjeevi plays the titular role, while Bollywood superstar Salman Khan will be seen in a major role in the action extravaganza that is set to hit the screens on October 5.

Chiranjeevi plays a character that is referred to as ‘Godfather’ in the film. The character of the ‘Godfather’ disappears for 20 years from the public gaze and suddenly returns to gain huge popularity in the next six years in the film.

Salman Khan, who plays Chiranjeevi’s younger brother in the film, is ready to offer his assistance anytime his elder brother wants him to.

The film has cinematography by Nirav Shah and music by Thaman and is one of the most eagerly awaited action entertainers of this year.

The Finance Minister added that the Prime Minister, Union ministers and government think-tank Niti Aayog are available all the time for consultations and discussions.

Sitharaman made these observations while responding to questions posed by Kris Gopalakrishnan, Chairman of Global Fintech Fest’s advisory board.

BJP, on the call of its state president Satish Poonia, on Tuesday staged a huge protest against the Congress government in Jaipur alleging that it was turning a blind eye to the 55,000 cattle deaths in the state due to the Lumpy virus.

The protest was also staged to highlight other raging issues like increased electricity rates and power cuts, unemployment, worsening law and order, fake farmer loan waiver promises, etc.

Contreras Gomez ousts Kenin; Pliskova eases through Tokyo opener

0

Mexican qualifier Fernanda Contreras Gomez defeated 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 7-6(7), 6-4 in the first round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open here on Tuesday.

The victory was Contreras Gomez’s first career win in a Hologic WTA Tour main draw match. Ranked No.131, Contreras Gomez will face No.4 seed Veronika Kudermetova in the next round.

Despite her position as a qualifier, Contreras Gomez was the higher-ranked player in her Tokyo opener. Kenin, who reached a career-high No.4 in 2020, has seen her ranking slip to No.315 as she works her way back from injury.

After saving a set point late in the first-set tiebreak, Contreras Gomez dominated the second set to build a 5-1 lead. Kenin fought valiantly to put the set back on serve, but Contreras Gomez broke the American one last time to seal the win after 1 hour and 46 minutes.

Contreras Gomez, 24, made her tour-level debut at Roland Garros in May. After qualifying for her first Slam main draw, the three-time All-American from Vanderbilt beat Panna Udvardy to earn her first tour-level win. While she continued to successfully qualify at the Slams, it was not until Tokyo that Contreras Gomez earned a spot in the main draw of a WTA tournament.

No.6 seed Karolina Pliskova and No.28 Zhang Shuai needed just 57 minutes each to advance to the second round. Pliskova defeated Bulgarian qualifier Isabella Shinikova 6-2, 6-1 and will face Petra Martic.

Zhang ousted Japanese wildcard Mai Hontama 6-0, 6-3. She will face the No.2 seed, Caroline Garcia.

Standalone app of TikTok’s BeReal clone is now available outside US

0

Short video platform TikTok’s recently launched BeReal clone — TikTok Now — is now available as a standalone mobile app across global markets outside the US.

According to TechCrunch, the app offers a similar feature set to the TikTok Now experience being introduced into the US TikTok app, announced last week.

But as an independent mobile app, it allows users to opt-in to receive the push notifications just for these social check-ins, even if they have their TikTok notifications silenced, the report said.

Like BeReal, TikTok Now sends a random push notification every day encouraging users to take a photo or video with their phone’s front-facing and outward-facing cameras at the same time.

Users have a three-minute window to snap their photos or up to 10-minute long videos to participate. Friends can then view each others’ photos in the app’s Friends feed or they can view posts from others in an Explore feed.

Despite being a new major offering from one of the world’s most popular apps, the TikTok Now the app has yet to rank in the Top Overall iPhone apps chart in any market as of the time of writing.

However, it has managed to inch into the top 100 iPhone Social Networking apps in five markets — Madagascar, Mozambique, Kenya, Malta, and Singapore — and is ranked in the Top 500 iPhone Social Networking apps in 38 countries.

These include Myanmar, Bulgaria, Pakistan, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Germany, Qatar, Poland, Belgium, New Zealand, Guatemala, Austria, Bahrain, Bermuda, etc.

There is also an Android version of the app live in Bermuda, but it’s not ranking in any other markets.

Alia expresses gratitude on receiving Smita Patil Memorial Award

Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt, who is currently enjoying the response to her recently released fantasy adventure film ‘Brahmastra’ as it becomes the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2022, has been feted with the Smita Patil Memorial Award.

The actress took to the story section of her Instagram to share the news with her followers. Sharing the certificate of honor, she wrote on the picture: “Grateful and honored to receive the Smita Patil Memorial Award. Thank You to everyone (heart emoji).”

Established in 1986 by the Priyadarshni Academy in memory of actress Smita Patil, the Smita Patil Memorial Award is awarded to an Indian actress for her contribution to Indian cinema in the period prior to the ceremony, irrespective of a particular performance. Till 1994, the award was conferred every year to actresses. However, since 1994 the committee has been conferring the honor upon the actresses once every two years.

In the past, actresses like Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi, Tabu, Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar, and Kareena Kapoor Khan have been honored with the award. The award committee drew flak in 2016 when it feted Bollywood star Katrina Kaif with the award as certain sections of media and the general populace felt that the actress was undeserving of the honor.

Taapsee Pannu was the last actress to be feted with the honor before Alia back in 2020.
