Cong, various groups slams Manipur govt order for prior approval on book publication

Manipur’s opposition Congress on Thursday vehemently criticized the BJP-led state government’s decision for prior approval of all the books on the state’s history, culture, tradition, and geography by a government committee before their publications.

Various civil society organizations and writers also criticised the state government’s decision.

Manipur Pradesh Congress Vice-President Hareshwar Goshwami said that they are not surprised by such acts of BJP and “it is simply a clear manifestation of their true fascist nature”.

“Their message is loud and clear. Think, what I think, or face the consequence. The new system is to shut our mouths before we speak. To stop our pens before we write. It completely violates the right to freedom and expression granted by our Constitution,” said Goshwami, also a renowned author.

“How can I share my hard-earned data and materials with others before I publish my book? I am a writer and I will definitely defy this order and face any consequence,” he added.

State Congress spokesperson Ningombam Bupenda Meitei said that the decision is “deeply disturbing and of serious concern to the future of intellectual freedom and academic rigor among the intellectual community and authors, readers and thinkers of Manipur”.

“It is cannot be accepted that the BJP government would decide what book to be published and what matters are to be read and thought about,” Meitei said.

Congress’ Rajya Sabha member and former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh tweeted: “This is Modi’s India where a BJP state govt appointed committee will decide which book can be published and which cannot. This is worse than censorship if such a thing exists! Outrageous !”

Announcing a 15-member committee, headed by Manipur Education Minister, the state’s Higher and Technical Education Department, on September 15, issued an order, stating: “Any person or group desirous of publication of books on the history, culture, tradition, and geography of the state may submit an application to the Director, University and Higher Education, Manipur along with a copy of the manuscript of the book who shall place the matter before the Committee for its approval. The Committee shall convene its meeting as and when required.”

“Any publication of a book in violation shall be liable to be punished under the relevant law,” the order read.

The order said that it has come to the knowledge of the state government that some books published on the history, culture, tradition, and geography of the state contain material that may either distort facts or disturb the peaceful co-existence amongst the various communities in the state or both.

“In order to ensure that books on the history, culture, tradition, and geography of the state are published with accurate information, the Governor of Manipur do hereby constitute the committee … to accord approval for publication of books,” it said.

Various Manipuri civil society organizations, authors, and experts have also criticised the decision.

RBI cancels licence of Laxmi Co-operative Bank, Solapur

0

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Thursday canceled the license of The Laxmi Co-operative Bank Ltd in Maharashtra’s Solapur.

Consequently, the bank ceases to carry on banking business, with effect from the close of business on September 22.

The Commissioner for Cooperation and Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Maharashtra has also been requested to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator for the bank.

Following are the reason the central bank stated for canceling the license:

– The bank does not have adequate capital and earning prospects. As such, it does not comply with the provisions of Section 11(1) and Section 22 (3) (d) read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

– The bank has failed to comply with the requirements of Sections 22(3) (a), 22 (3) (b), 22(3)(c), 22(3) (d), and 22(3)(e) read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949;

– The continuance of the bank is prejudicial to the interests of its depositors;

– The bank with its present financial position would be unable to pay its present depositors in full; and

– Public interest would be adversely affected if the bank is allowed to carry on its banking business any further.

On liquidation, every depositor would be entitled to receive deposit insurance claim amount of his/her deposits up to a monetary ceiling of Rs 5 lakh only from the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) subject to the provisions of the DICGC Act, 1961.

As per the data submitted by the bank, about 99 percent of the depositors are entitled to receive the full amount of their deposits from the DICGC. As on September 13, the DICGC has already paid Rs 193.68 crore of the total insured deposits under the provisions of Section 18A of the DICGC Act, 1961 based on the willingness received from the concerned depositors of the bank.

Swiggy, Zomato make it to top 10 global online food delivery firms

0

Homegrown online food delivery platforms Zomato and Swiggy have made it to the list of the world’s ‘Top 10′ e-commerce-based food delivery companies, says a new report.

According to the Canada-headquartered global research firm ETC Group, Swiggy was placed in 9th place and Zomato in 10th.

Meanwhile, China’s Meituan, the UK’s Deliveroo, and the US’ Uber Eats, a subsidiary of Uber, captured the top 3 positions, respectively.

“The food delivery sector refers to digital, on-demand platforms for ordering and paying for prepared food and, increasingly, groceries and other retail items,” the research firm said in a statement.

“Restaurants/retailers fill the orders and couriers deliver them to customers within a prescribed timeframe,” it added.

In June 2022, Zomato approved the acquisition of quick commerce start-up Blinkit for Rs 4,447.5 crore ($570 million) in an all-stock deal. Zomato already owned more than a 9 percent stake in Blinkit (earlier Grofers).

Meanwhile, Swiggy, a subsidiary of Bundl Technologies Private Ltd, deals with prepared food (restaurant) delivery, cloud kitchen, and grocery delivery via Swiggy Go.

“Venture capital and technology investment has fuelled the sector, but companies have yet to deliver profits — even in the sector-friendly circumstances of the global pandemic when delivery became more necessity than convenience,” the report said.

“Tweaking the business model to move toward profitability — most prominently by adding grocery delivery — is underway,” it added.

Actress Emma D’Arcy is set to debut as the adult princess Rhanyera in the sixth episode of ‘House of the Dragon’. She recently spoke about how she did her own stunts and enjoyed the process in the series.

Hence, these stunts came across as a shock to her system, “And then we went in to work with the team – and this was right in the middle of the pandemic, and needless to say, the gym hadn’t been open – it was a shock to the system.”

But, nevertheless, she enjoyed the process as it opened up her perspective on a lot of things, “But you know it was great. It’s amazing to do these things and work with these incredible people. There you are, wielding a long sword and being given expert advice on how to do it. I enjoyed it.”

‘KBC 14’ contestant on Big B: He makes you feel like an equal

For Delhi-based Suraj Nair, nothing could be a more significant achievement than meeting the host and megastar Amitabh Bachchan on ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 14’. He opened up about his journey and the challenges he faced to take the hotseat on the show.

During a conversation with Big B, he said: “From the very beginning, I was a fanatic of the show because unlike other shows, this was about knowledge. Thus, I developed a passion to go to ‘KBC’.”

“The show came in the era when there were fewer to no cell phones and so access to knowledge was not that easy,” added the 37-year-old IT professional.

However, he didn’t give up hope and worked hard to prepare as he watched the show standing in front of a barber’s shop.

He revealed: “I used to make notes, watched the different episodes of the show, and followed the question answers. We had financial issues, so I watched KBC standing in front of the barber’s shop or random tea stalls. Ten-fifteen years ago I started applying for KBC. When I received the call for the audition, I got super excited and told my wife.”

On how tough it was to believe him that he is on the quiz-based reality show, he concluded: “Can you imagine, sitting at some distance from a human being who is one of the greatest in Indian cinema and who you have till now only seen on TV conducting the question answers for the show? On top of it, Mr. Bachchan talks to you on your level, he makes you feel like an equal.”

‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 14’ airs on Sony Entertainment Television.

‘Goodbye’ is a story that touches every emotional chord in your heart and makes you realize the importance of your loved ones along with the downturns of life. Rashmika will also be sharing screen space with Neena Gupta, Sunil Grover, Pavail Gulati, Ashish Vidyarthi, and Elli AvrRam in the film.

iPhone 14 Pro more popular than its base model: Report

0

Apple’s next-generation iPhone 14 Pro models are much more popular in the market when compared to the base iPhone 14, says a new report.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the tech giant is planning on asking its suppliers to move away production capacity from the vanilla iPhone 14 model to the more expensive iPhone 14 Pro versions, reports GizmoChina.

The company is making the shift due to the latter seeing higher demand, so raising their production should help raise sales in the fourth and final quarter of this year.

Currently, Apple has apparently told Foxconn to raise iPhone 14 Pro series production, to increase the ASP (Average Selling Price) of its latest iPhone lineup.

In other words, the analyst is expecting the increased shipments and sales to raise the ASP of the 2022 iPhones by around 10 percent, the report said.

For those unaware, the brand had announced the iPhone 14 series during its Far Out event, with the new models featuring various improvements over the previous generation iPhone 13.

The new series included a brand new iPhone 14 Plus, which replaced the mini model while the Pro variants also brought a major change in design on the front. Meanwhile, the rear on these higher-end variants also saw a bump in camera specifications as well.

Union Minister Murugan to meet Puducherry CM to resolve dispute between BJP, AINRC

Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Fisheries L. Murugan is slated to meet Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Friday to solve the vexed issue between the saffron party and the All India NR Congress(AINRC).

While BJP is an alliance partner of AINRC in Puducherry, ever since Rangasamy became Chief Minister of the territorial government, there have been differences between the two coalition partners. BJP Puducherry unit president Saminathan told IANS that they are expecting a good meeting between the two leaders.

Sources in the BJP told in an interview that if the meeting fails to give a positive result, then the BJP unit is planning to complain to the national leadership.

The Puducherry Unit of the BJP is sore that Rangasamy has not been considering them for any new postings and that the Chief Minister was deliberately not filling the posts of Chairman in Public Sector Undertakings, including corporations. The BJP is of the opinion that the Chief Minister was deliberately not filling the posts to avoid the claims of the BJP leadership.

It is to be noted that the Puducherry unit president of the BJP, Saminathan, and Home Minister and senior BJP leader A. Namassivayam had recently met the Chief Minister and urged him to fill the vacant posts of Chairmen and other allied posts. However, the Chief Minister did not agree to their demands and said that the corporations and mills were bleeding and that it was not viable to open it for the sake of opening. The Chief Minister, it is learned, has told the leaders that it was not possible to appoint a new chairman in PSUs that were loss-making entities.

Rangasamy, according to BJP sources, has informed the leaders that he won’t have any problem in appointing a new chairman for the PSU given the possibility that the central government is providing extra funds to these corporations.

During the last Assembly session, BJP MLA Kalyanasundaram lashed out at the state government and especially Chief Minister and pointed out that there were irregularities in sanctioning new distilleries. This was seen as a direct fight the BJP had taken to the doorsteps of the Chief Minister.

However, sources in the party told IANS that the ice may break with the arrival of Murugan, who was the state president of the BJP in neighboring Tamil Nadu and has an excellent personal rapport with Chief Minister Rangasamy.

SGPGIMS in Lucknow to have more departments

0

The Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow is opening new faculties that will initiate head and neck surgery, pediatric endocrinology, and infectious disease & vaccine research departments.

The governing body of the institute has approved the creation of new departments.

The department of head & neck surgery at SGPGIMS would cater to patients with head and neck cancer which constitute 21 percent of the overall cancer cases detected in the state.

Director SGPGIMS Professor Radha Krishna Dhiman said that after the creation of this department, head and neck cancers would be treated in a better and more organized way.

These new departments are very significant considering the occurrence of throat cancer, pediatric complications, and the recent Covid Pandemic.

Uttar Pradesh will have long-term benefits with the availability of specialized treatment in these new departments.

Prof Dhiman said, “The department of pediatric endocrinology will cater to the areas of growth and puberty in children. SGPGIMS started the first formal training program in pediatric endocrinology in 2001. Now after the creation of the department, cases of diabetes, obesity, thyroid, and other disorders prevalent in children can be treated with complete focus and dedication.”

He said the department of infectious diseases and vaccine development was much needed after the recent Covid pandemic. This new department at SGPGIMS would exclusively handle infectious diseases like Swine Flu, Japanese Encephalitis, viral hepatitis, and Corona.

The SGPGIMS has also increased the B.Sc and M.Sc seats in the College of Nursing and also approved new courses in various departments.

The director said that SGPGIMS was striving for excellence and that all resources and facilities would be optimally utilized and enhanced in the future in order to provide the best possible medical care.

Twitter discloses bug that left users’ account logged in after password reset

0

Twitter has disclosed a bug that allowed accounts to stay logged in from multiple devices after a voluntary password reset, putting users’ data at potential hacking risk.

The company said that it has fixed the bug that didn’t close all active logged-in sessions on Android and iOS devices after an account’s password was reset.

“If you proactively changed your password on one device, but still had an open session on another device, that session may not have been closed. Web sessions were not affected and were closed appropriately,” the micro-blogging platform said in a statement late on Wednesday.

This bug was introduced after Twitter made a change to the systems that power password resets last year.

“To keep your account safe, we logged some of you out. You can log back in to keep using Twitter,” said the company.

Twitter said it has directly informed the people who may have been affected by this bug, “proactively logged them out of open sessions across devices, and prompted them to log in again”.

The incident happened as Twitter is facing larger scrutiny from the government after its former head of security, Peiter ‘Mudge’ Zatko, claimed that the company hid negligent security practices, misled federal regulators about its safety, and failed to estimate the number of bots on its platform.

UK to deepen ties with fellow democracies like India to build resilience: Truss

0

Newly-elected British Prime Minister Liz Truss said that to build economic strength and resilience, her country is deepening relations and growing security ties with fellow democracies like India.

Making her debut on the world stage on Wednesday at the high-level meeting of the General Assembly, she said: “The free world needs this economic strength and resilience to push back against authoritarian aggression and win this new era of strategic competition.”

For this, Truss said: “We are deepening our links with fellow democracies like India, Israel, Indonesia, and South Africa… We are building new security ties with our friends in the Indo-Pacific and the Gulf.”

Last year, India and Britain committed to Roadmap 2030, a broad plan for cooperation that encompasses strategic affairs, trade, Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific security, climate change, and health.

The Prime Minister brought the stark message of a confrontation between democracy and autocracy over the future of the world.

“There is a real struggle going on between different forms of society – between democracies and autocracies. But we cannot simply assume there will be a democratic future.

“Unless democratic societies deliver on the economy and security our citizens expect, we will fall behind,” she added.

For this, Truss said, democracies like Britain have to build their economies and not “be strategically dependent on those who seek to weaponize the global economy”, a reference to Russia, whose ongoing invasion of Ukraine and its fallout have hit many countries hard.

To be economically and strategically resilient, democracies must band together, she said.

And alluding to the predatory nature of China’s economic programs abroad, the Prime Minister said: “Rather than exerting influence through debt, aggression, and taking control of critical infrastructure and minerals, we are building strategic ties based on mutual benefit and trust.”

Earlier on Wednesday, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met the UK’s Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.

In a tweet after the meeting, Jaishankar said: “Discussed taking forward Roadmap 2030. Appreciate his commitment to deepening our partnership. Our conversation also covered global issues including Indo-Pacific, Ukraine, and UNSC matters.”

Burden of promise weighing heavily on ruling BJP as leaders who came aboard unhappy

The ruling BJP in Karnataka is a worried lot as those who switched over to its fold from other parties have expressed their unhappiness over the treatment meted out to them in the state party.

BJP leaders had made tall promises to these leaders while they quit their respective Congress and JD (S) parties. However, due to unavoidable circumstances, the promises made have not been fulfilled leading to certain detrimental developments in the party ahead of Assembly elections.

The latest victim is BJP MLC Basavaraja Horatti, say BJP insiders.

According to sources, he was made the offer of continuing in his position as the Chairman of the Legislative Council.

Horatti, former JD (S) leader and close to former PM H.D. Deve Gowda held the position before joining the BJP. However, now, the BJP is having second thoughts about providing him with what was promised.

Sources said that Chief Minister Basavaraja Bommai, Union Minister for Mining, Coal and Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi wants to anoint him to the position, but the National General Secretary (Organisation)B.L Santhosh is objecting to it. Though a decision was taken in the cabinet to hold the election to the post on Monday, it wasn’t scheduled.

This has made Basavaraj Horatti very sad and the senior leader is miffed with the development, the sources said. Horatti has already met CM Bommai and asked him to speak to the party’s high command.

He has also expressed displeasure that, though he is capable of winning from any political party, he has not been accorded the proper treatment within the BJP.

Meanwhile, former minister Ramesh Jarakiholi is also unhappy that even after cleaning chit in the alleged sex CD scandal, he is being kept at a distance. Jarakiholi played a major role in installing the BJP government in the state by leading the rebellion against Congress-JD (S) coalition.

BJP MLC H Vishwanath, who quit the position of JD (S) president to join the BJP is also yet to be accommodated. BJP MLA Srimanth Patil, who joined with rebels, also lost his ministerial post. Independent MLA R. Shankar has also not been given a minister’s post.

Another rebel who left his cabinet post while joining BJP, Pratap Gouda Patil has not even been given an MLC post after losing the elections.

On the other hand, former minister K.S. Eshwarappa is also keeping away from party affairs as even after a clean chit in the contractor’s suicide case, the party has not accommodated him in the cabinet.

However, the ruling BJP has a tough challenge before Assembly elections in assuaging the feelings of its own partymen. The burden of promises could make things for the party difficult, sources opine.
