Global investors view Shehbaz’s appeal as sign of imminent default on foreign debt

The price of Pakistan’s US dollar-denominated global bonds, Eurobond and Sukuk, slumped while their yields skyrocketed on world markets after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appealed for debt relief from rich nations to cope with the flood-hit economy.

The global bond investors interpreted the prime minister’s appeal as an indicator that the country was going to default on foreign debt repayments. Islamabad is scheduled to repay $1 billion against a maturing Sukuk on December 5, 2022, The, Express Tribune reported.

The prices of any country’s bonds plunge and their yields – the rate of return – soar while they are facing a financial crisis and vice versa.

Earlier, the Financial Times while citing a UN policy memo, reported that Pakistan should suspend international debt repayments and restructure loans with creditors after recent floods added to the country’s financial crisis.

The memorandum, which the UN Development Programme will share with Pakistan’s government this week, states that the country’s creditors should consider debt relief so that policymakers can prioritize financing its disaster response over loan repayment, the newspaper said.

The memo further proposed debt restructuring or swaps, where creditors would let go of repayments in exchange for Pakistan agreeing to invest in climate change-resilient infrastructure, FT said.

“Pakistan’s dollar bonds maturing in 2022 fell by 12 percent today (Friday) whereas dollar bonds maturing in 2024 and 2025 fell by 15 percent and 17 percent, respectively,” Topline Research’s analyst Umair Naseer said.

AHL Research reported the yield on the bond maturing in December 2022 skyrocketed by 6,560 basis points (bps) to a record high of 104.7 percent.

Similarly, the yields on bonds maturing in 2024 and 2025 shot up to 60.7 percent (up by 1,542 bps) and 39.2 percent (up by 831 bps), respectively.

Pakistan’s global bonds yields usually hover at much less than 10 percent on normal days, The Express Tribune reported.

The bond investors felt high default risk despite the country’s default risk being measured through CDS (currency default swap) and witnessed no major change during the day, Naseer said.

The country’s foreign exchange reserves, however, have continued to decrease every passing week, as authorities partially make import payments and foreign debt repayments from the reserves amid low inflows.

The foreign exchange reserves have fast depleted to around half at $8.3 billion since January 2022.

They are barely enough for a six-week import cover at present despite it receiving $1.16 billion in loan tranche from International Monetary Fund (IMF) in early September, The Express Tribune reported.

Experts, however, strongly believe the reserves would build up again after IMF resumed its $6.5 billion loan programme on August 29, 2022. This will be followed by inflows from other multilateral and bilateral creditors including World Bank (WB) and Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Besides, the global community has pledged flood relief at around $1.5-2 billion. Their arrivals would also help boost the reserves.

The government has estimated reserves surging to around $16 billion by June 30, 2023

Anyhow, Finance Minister Miftah Ismail tried to clarify the situation arising out of Sharif’s talk and win back the global bond investors’ confidence later in the day on Friday.

“Given the climate-induced disaster in Pakistan, we are seeking debt relief from bilateral Paris Club creditors. We are neither seeking nor do we need, any relief from commercial banks or Eurobond creditors,” Ismail tweeted.

“We have a $1 billion bond due in December which we will pay on time and in full. We have been servicing all our commercial debt and will continue to do so. Our Eurobond debt is only $8 billion due between now and 2051. That’s not a large burden. A significant portion of our debt is from friendly countries who have said they will re-roll their deposits.”

Since trade volumes on Pakistan’s global bonds have reduced to low these days, therefore, “a small selling pressure on its dollar bonds could have resulted in sharp price fall, we believe”, Topline Research’s analyst said.

Ismail has reiterated the government’s resolve to meet its debt obligations and continue with the reform process that has been initiated.

“Hence, we believe that the likelihood of Pakistan defaulting on its debt payment is low in the short run.”

Further, the expected multilateral and bilateral flows post-floods are also likely to support pressure on the foreign exchange reserves of the country.

World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, and a few friendly countries have already committed flood-related aid/funding which could be to the tune of $1.5-2 billion.

Bangladesh Women secure last spot in T20 World Cup in South Africa

0

Bangladesh Women managed to defend a small total, thanks mainly to their veteran off-spinner Salma Khatun, as they defeated Thailand by 11 runs to qualify for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2023.

Earlier, Ireland booked their place in the showpiece event in South Africa with a four-run win over Zimbabwe.

Defending 113/5 on Friday evening, built mainly on Murshida Khatun’s 26 and Rumana Ahmed’s unbeaten 28, Bangladesh managed to restrict Thailand Women to 102/6, with Natthakan Chantham being the lone ranger for the side, scoring 64 off 51 deliveries.

Asked to bat first, Bangladesh got off to a slow start, ambling along to 27/0 at the end of the powerplay. Thailand tightened their bowling in the second half of the innings as batters got decent starts but couldn’t convert them into big scores. Skipper Nigar Sultana never got going, making 17 off 24 balls before falling in the 15th over.

It needed a late cameo from Rumana Ahmed, a 24-ball 28, to help Bangladesh post a total of 113/5, which still seemed below par. But Bangladesh made up for that with a strong powerplay with the ball, taking three Thailand wickets and conceding just 13 runs in the first six overs.

Natthakan Chantham held the innings together from No.3, but she struggled to get support from the other end as Bangladesh kept things tight. Sanjida Akter and Salma Khatun starred with the ball for Bangladesh, taking two and three wickets each, and bowling economical spells.

For Thailand, Chantham made her fifth half-century, but it wasn’t enough for her team to get close enough as Bangladesh beat them to the T20 World Cup in South Africa next year.

Brief scores:

Bangladesh Women 113/5 (Murshida Khatun 26, Rumana Ahmed 28 not out) beat Thailand 102/6 (Natthakan Chantham 64, Salma Khatun 3/18, Sanjida Akter 2/7) by 11 runs.

‘N.Korean nuke test possible during Harris’ visit to Seoul, Tokyo’

0

North Korea may well conduct a nuclear test during US Vice President Kamala Harris’ upcoming trip to South Korea and Japan as Pyongyang has been preparing for such a test, a senior administration official said here.

The official warned the North will face serious consequences should it choose to conduct a new test, Yonhap News Agency reported on Saturday.

“It is possible and we previously said that the DPRK is preparing to conduct a nuclear test,” the official said on Friday when asked about the possibility of a North Korean nuclear test during Harris’ trip next week.

DPRK stands for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, North Korea’s official name.

The official noted Pyongyang has been said to be preparing for a nuclear test for some time.

“We have made clear that such a test would result in additional actions by the US to demonstrate our ironclad commitment to the security of the Republic of Korea and to our Japanese allies,” said the official, referring to South Korea by its official name.

“We have made clear how concerned we have been by North Korean provocations and destabilizing behavior and a nuclear test would certainly be in that category,” the official added, also noting the issue of North Korean provocations will “certainly” be discussed when the Vice President meets her South Korean counterparts.

Harris is scheduled to make a four-day visit to Japan from September 26, leading a presidential delegation to the funeral of late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

She will arrive in South Korea on September 29 for a meeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, the official said in a telephonic press briefing.

It will mark her first trip to both Japan and South Korea since taking office early last year.

In addition to Yoon, Harris is also scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who will be leading South Korea’s presidential delegation to Abe’s funeral.

The Harris-Han meeting will be held in Tokyo on September 26, according to a U.S. administration official.

During her two-day trip to Seoul, the Vice President will also hold a roundtable with a group of what the administration official called “groundbreaking Korean women”.

Urban naxals need to be stopped from stalling development projects: Modi

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday blamed ‘urban Naxals for creating roadblocks in developmental projects and blamed them for influencing global bodies and institutions to stall progressive works.

The Prime Minister said that “conspiracies” of such elements need to be stopped.

In his virtual address to a conference of state environment ministers in Gujarat’s Ekta Nagar, the location of the Sardar Sarovar dam, Modi said, “We have seen how in the name of environmental clearance roadblocks are created to stall modern infrastructure creation. You won’t believe how urban Naxals and anti-development elements had delayed the Sardar Sarovar dam’s construction.

“Here in Ekta Nagar, the dam’s foundation stone was laid soon after Independence by Pandit Nehru but then urban Naxals came on the scene, claiming that the project was anti-environment and it got stalled for several decades. Something which was initiated by Pandit Nehru could only be completed when I became the Chief Minister of Gujarat. So much of public money was wasted.”

The same Ekta Nagar is now a pilgrimage of environment, the Prime Minister said.

“Still, these urban Naxals have not kept quiet. Despite their lies being exposed, they are not ready to give up. They manage to get political support and it is surprising how many global institutions are influenced by them which raises objections against developmental projects. We have to stop the conspiracies of such urban naxals,” Modi said in his address.

He added that there should be no compromise in the path of environmental protection and a holistic approach should be adopted to such issues.

“We should ensure that environmental and forest clearances to projects are not delayed. This leads to cost overruns. We need to reduce pendencies in such environmental projects as much as possible. To achieve this, the work environment should also change,” Modi told the state environment ministers.

He added that both the Centre and the states should work in tandem to expedite the clearance of environment-related projects.

Zomato cracks down on Cloud kitchens operating hundreds of brands from one location

0

Online food aggregator Zomato on Friday announced to crack down on Cloud kitchen operators who are misusing legal loopholes to offer hundreds of food brands from a single, small kitchen.

The company said that it is going to manually check any physical location which runs more than 10 brands out of a single location.

“While there is no exact science to the right number of brands, we believe that even the most organized outlets in the industry don’t see operational benefits and customer trust in operating too many brands from a single kitchen,” said Zomato.

The food delivery platform engaged with the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) and other restaurant partners to formulate the right approach to curb these practices.

“Upon deliberations with Zomato, we felt this was an acceptable interim solution wherein the Zomato team carries out a preliminary physical inspection of such locations,” said Kabir Suri, President NRAI and Co-Founder of Azure Hospitality.

“We will further work with the Zomato team in ascertaining whether these kitchens comply with acceptable industry norms and suggest solutions thereon,” he added.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has stated that cloud kitchen entities are free to operate multiple brands on a single FSSAI license (usually unique to a kitchen).

However, there are some exceptions to this. Some fly-by-night operators, who account for less than 0.2 percent of registered kitchens, misuse this flexibility in law by creating innumerable brands from the same kitchen.

“These brands have little to no differentiation in the product offering; instead they confuse/cheat customers by creating a false perception of choice, while none of it actually exists,” said Zomato.

“Most of the brands run by these operators also have terrible reviews and ratings on our platform. Such operators tarnish the reputation of the restaurant industry as a whole, hurting all of us in more ways than one,” said the company.

The customers’ average delivery rating for these operators goes down as the number of brands from a single kitchen goes up.

Similarly, the percentage of customers who raise complaints goes up as the number of brands from a kitchen increases.

Zomato said it will whitelist the restaurant partners that provide a great experience so that they don’t face delays while expanding the scope of their businesses.

“We will also showcase the information of multiple brands linked to a kitchen on the restaurant’s page on Zomato, in the spirit of transparency.,” it added.

Madhuri: Back in 90s, writers used to pen scripts on sets

Actress Madhuri Dixit Nene, who is gearing up for her streaming movie ‘Maja Ma’, recently spoke about the changes that she has witnessed in recent years about how the Hindi film industry which is otherwise known as Bollywood has changed over the course of time.

While speaking in to interview, the actress, who plays a Gujarati homemaker in the film, said, “Earlier the Hindi film industry was very disorganized and disjointed except for a few productions like Yash Raj Films, Subhash Ghai’s production or Rajshri Production, which were very organized in their approach. But now with the corporate culture had come up in the films, things are far more streamlined today.”

She then mentioned how the industry has started taking writing – the bedrock of any film, quite seriously, “We have table reading sessions with our fellow cast members now, something which was unheard of back then in the 1990s. We used to get dialogues on the go, just before a shot was supposed to be delivered.”

Adding a humorous hue to her statement, she further mentioned, “We used to wait for the writer to finish his dialogues, who would say from some corner of the set, ‘Haan madam bas 2-minute mein like ke deta hoon (Just 2 minutes and your dialogues would be ready, ma’am)'”.

Things have changed for the good, the actress said and this in a way helps the Indian cinema to compete on the global stage where productions are flawless and of six-sigma quality, “Today, we are given a bound script about, which breaks down things to the last detail like what are we going to wear in a particular scene or what should be the pitching of the character. These details really help an actor prepare for a scene and deliver something that the audience would thoroughly enjoy.”

Meanwhile, ‘Maja Ma’ is set to drop on Prime Video on October 6.

Shehbaz meets Biden at reception for world leaders in New York

0

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met US President Joe Biden at the reception for world leaders participating in the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, media reports said.

Shehbaz Sharif, along with other world leaders, were invited to the reception by the US President, Express Tribune reported.

This is the first interaction between Biden and the Pakistani Prime Minister. Since his election, Biden had not spoken to either then Prime Minister Imran Khan or his successor, it said.

The meeting, despite being informal, is significant given the fact that the Biden administration, during Imran Khan’s tenure, largely ignored Pakistan.

However, since the change of government, there has been a flurry of engagements between the two countries.

Earlier, in his address to the UN General Assembly, Biden made a fervent pitch for extending help to Pakistan where floods had caused huge devastation.

In his address, he announced over $2.9 billion in new assistance to address global food insecurity, building on the $6.9 billion in US government assistance to support global food security already committed this year.

Earlier this month, a senior adviser of the US Secretary of State visited Pakistan and the Biden administration also approved the $450 million sale of F-16 equipment to Pakistan.

School holidays, bad weather disrupts understaffed Sydney airport

0

With millions of Australians heading away for school holidays, an understaffed Sydney airport has seen mass flight cancellations due to severe weather.

Severe thunderstorms saw more than 40 flight cancellations as heavy rain hit Sydney and much of the state of New South Wales (NSW), as well as parts of Queensland, reports Xinhua news agency.

While the Bureau of Meteorology has downgraded its severe weather warnings as of Friday, heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the following days.

As school holidays are set to begin on Saturday in most states around the country, and some are already on holiday since last week, Sydney’s airport anticipates that almost 2.4 million passengers will pass through, with 1.65 million flying domestically and 720,000 internationally, in the period from this Monday to October 9.

All of this is on top of the airport struggling to fill job vacancies left by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In anticipation of this busy week, it held a second jobs fair to try to fill labor shortages.

Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert said all of the organizations across the airport have been working hard to rebuild the workforce and operational performance is improving, but labor shortages are an ongoing challenge with around 4,000 open roles across the airport.

Meanwhile, the flag carrier, Qantas, has scheduled larger-than-usual aircraft between the country’s two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, as well as extra staff available in terminals, to manage the large influx of passengers to be brought by the upcoming holiday.

Women’s hockey team building towards Nations Cup with learnings from World Cup: Midfielder Neha

0

With the FIH Nations Cup in December this year, charismatic Indian women’s hockey team midfielder Neha Goyal says the side is gradually building towards the event in Valencia (Spain), with the learning from the dismal World Cup campaign and the bronze medal-winning performance at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games being part of the training program in Bengaluru.

Neha, who hails from Haryana, said the team is building on these “positive qualities” that will hold them in good stead in big-ticket events.

“I feel with most of us in the team gaining strong international experience and having dealt with tough game-situations have grown from strength to strength. I feel we are poised for better results in the upcoming tournaments. There is good synergy in the group and this shows in how we perform,” Neha said.

The team’s historic bronze at Birmingham 2022 is only a stepping stone towards greater results to come, believes Neha, who has faced several odds in her personal life to make a career out of hockey.

“There is a great atmosphere in the SAI campus with both Indian teams and junior squads camping there. Apart from good facilities, there is an air of positivity there and both teams push each other to do well. We are fortunate that way,” said Neha.

Talking about the team’s positive trajectory, Neha said, “If you see our performance in the last two years, we have been consistent in doing well against top teams of the world. Even if there have been matches where the result hasn’t gone our way, we have bounced back from the disappointment only to work towards getting a favorable outcome.”

She further stressed the team’s World Cup outing where things didn’t go their way but they rallied to bounce back from the disappointment of losing the crossover match against Spain.

“It’s never easy to bounce back as a team from a disappointment like that. We lost by a goal to the home team Spain. But it is the team’s strength to overcome a setback. We tell ourselves every match is a new beginning, and we can fight for better results till the last second. This is what helped us bounce back after the match against Australia too in the CWG,” she said.

India’s Arjun Erigaisi in Julius Baer Cup chess semifinal; Praggnanandhaa bows out

0

India’s 19-year-old Arjun Erigaisi overcame a strong challenge from 15-year-old American Christopher Yoo to secure a semifinal berth in the Julius Baer Generation Cup — the seventh leg of the USD1.6 million Meltwater Champions Chess Tour –, even as another young Indian exponent, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, was eliminated in the other quarterfinal match.

At 15, Christopher Yoo is the youngest player in the event and the youngest player to make it to a Meltwater Champions Chess Tour’s knockout stage. Yet he was up against another talented teen, Arjun Erigaisi, who impressed in the preliminary rounds and has looked a force throughout.

Erigaisi took the opener but Yoo hit back in a long second game. A keen match saw Erigaisi take the lead again before Yoo levelled the score in a tense final game to force tiebreaks. Erigaisi won the first blitz play-off to edge ahead and then finally broke his opponent in the second, denying Yoo the win he needed to go through to the semis.

Erigaisi now faces Germany’s 17-year-old talented Vincent Keymer in an all-teenage clash. Keymer knocked out another youngster who has already made waves this season, India’s Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, in another quarterfinal.

Norwegian Magnus Carlsen put this week’s controversy off the board firmly behind him as he also sailed into the semifinal. The world champion dispatched Levon Aronian 3-1 in the quarterfinal to extend his fine run of form as speculation continues about why he resigned his game on Monday against the American Hans Niemann.

Carlsen will meet Vietnam’s Liem Quang Le in the other semifinal. Niemann, meanwhile, was knocked out by Liem Quang Le meaning a re-run of his match with Carlsen now can’t happen in this Meltwater Champions Chess Tour event.

Carlsen, who made his first comments on the cheating scandal on Wednesday, said he has received support in his post-match interview, according to Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. “Some people have been saying… maybe more supportive things privately than they have publicly, which I very much understand and I certainly appreciate,” he said.

Carlsen, however, didn’t have it easy. In the opener, Aronian turned on the style to inflict Carlsen’s first real loss — his resignation against Niemann aside — of the tournament. The champion, who dominated the preliminary stage, found his position collapsing before 52.Kf2? consigned him to defeat.

Aronian was ahead but let his advantage slip almost immediately in the next game. One bad decision, early in the opening, cost Aronian dearly. The Armenian-American played 12.Bd3 allows Carlsen to castle queenside and pin the bishop. It was a fatal mistake and the game ended on move 48 with a rare checkmate on the board.

“This is the most shocking development I have ever seen in a top-level match!” Grandmaster Peter Leko said. “You win a great game with Black and then you lose in 10 moves with White… wow, shocking!”

Carlsen came straight at Aronian again in the third before finding the winning 21.g4! Carlsen closed the game to take a 2-1 lead. Aronian now needed to win the final game to take it to tiebreaks, but it wasn’t to be. Heading for a draw, Aronian blundered in the endgame and Carlsen took the win. Carlsen was into the semis.

“It was kind of a weird match,” Carlsen said. “First game, I think, was pretty reasonable for both sides but he played a lot faster than I did and then I just made a big mistake and he exploited it very nicely for a while, and then I felt like I was getting some small chances but I couldn’t find them.

“I did have a study-like way to draw but even then we would have had a famous queen ending where he would still have had chances. So it’s obviously a poor start but still knew with three games to go that I only needed a plus one to take it to tiebreaks so I wasn’t panicking yet.

“Obviously I got a massive gift in the second game and I felt like after that I was pretty much in control.”

FB users sue Meta for tracking them on iOS devices via a workaround

0

Facebook users have sued its parent company, Meta, in the US for allegedly tracking them via an in-app browser on iOS devices despite tough Apple privacy policies in place.

The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, alleged that Meta follows users’ online activity by “funneling them into the web browser built into Facebook and injecting JavaScript into the sites they visit”.

According to a TechCrunch report, that code makes it possible for the company to monitor “every single interaction with external websites”.

Apple introduced a major iOS privacy update via iOS 14.5 last year to stop third-party apps like Facebook from tracking user behavior and their browsing history via App Tracking Transparency (ATT) feature.

However, according to the lawsuit, Meta snooped on users “through a workaround”.

The proposed class-action lawsuit “could allow anyone affected to sign on, which in Facebook’s case might mean hundreds of millions of US users,” the report said late on Thursday.

According to it, Meta is not only violating Apple’s policies but also breaking privacy laws at the state and federal levels.

A Meta spokesperson said in a statement that the allegations were “without merit” and it will fight them in court.

“We have carefully designed our in-app browser to respect users’ privacy choices, including how data may be used for ads,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg have admitted that Apple iOS privacy changes will cost the company a whopping $10 billion in 2022.

Meta has also accused Apple of favoring Google over app-based platforms like Facebook with its privacy policies.

“We believe those restrictions from Apple are designed in a way to carve out browsers from the tracking Apple requires for apps. So what that means is that search ads could have access to far more third party data, for measurement and optimization purposes, than app-based ad platforms like ours,” according to Meta.

Apple releases new update to fix iPhone 14 Pro camera vibration

0

Tech giant Apple has released a new update — iOS 16.0.2 — that addresses a variety of bugs for users, including the iPhone 14 Pro camera shaking bug.

The new update comes two weeks after the launch of iOS 16, and it follows iOS 16.0.1, an update made available to iPhone 14 owners on launch day, reports MacRumors.

The update is available for all iPhones that are capable of running iOS 16, the report said.

According to Apple’s release notes, iOS 16.0.2 addresses several bugs impacting the iPhone 14 models and other iPhones running iOS 16.

It addresses an issue that could cause the camera to vibrate and shake in third-party camera apps, it fixes a bug that led to repeated copy and pastes popups, and it resolves a problem causing the display to appear black during setup.

It also fixes an issue that caused some iPhone X, XR, and iPhone 11 models with replaced displays to become unresponsive after updating to iOS 16.

All of these bugs were found shortly after the new iPhones launched, the report said.

The camera vibration issue is one of the more serious bugs as it causes the rear camera to shake uncontrollably when filming a video on apps like Snapchat, TikTok, and Instagram.

Instagram returns after being down for hours

0

Following a two-hour outage affecting several iOS and Android users’ login activities worldwide, Meta-owned photo and video-sharing platform Instagram has said it is now back online.

According to outage tracking website Downdetector.com, nearly 34,000 users reported having trouble accessing the platform late Thursday.

“And we are back! We resolved the issue that caused today’s outage and apologize for any inconvenience,” Instagram said in a tweet.

The platform mentioned that it was aware that “some people are having trouble accessing Instagram”.

“We are working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible. Sorry for any inconvenience, and hang tight,” it had said earlier.

Instagram outage reports were 65 percent for app crashes, 24 percent for server connections, and 11 percent for login-related issues.

Users from the US, South America, Asia, and Europe were majorly affected.

Meanwhile, several users took to Twitter to complain about the incident under the hashtag #instagramdown.

“I cannot log into my account; please help,” a user tweeted.

“I still can’t log in. Instagram kicked me out 10 hours ago and since then, I always get the message that I should try it later again,” another user wrote.
