Global artificial intelligence market to reach $450 bn in 2022

0

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) market value is expected to reach nearly $450 billion this year and maintain a year-over-year growth rate in the next 5 years, a new report has forecasted.

In 2021, the global revenues for the AI market, including software, hardware, and services for both AI-centric and AI non-centric applications, reached $383.3 billion, an increase of 20.7 percent over the prior year, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).

“Across all industries and functions, end-user organizations are discovering the benefits of AI technologies, as increasingly powerful AI solutions are enabling better decision-making and higher productivity,” said Rasmus Andsbjerg, associate vice president, of Data & Analytics at IDC.

The reality is that AI offers solutions to everything we are facing at the moment.

“AI can be a source for fast-tracking digital transformation journeys, enable cost savings in times of staggering inflation rates, and support automation efforts in times of labor shortages,” Andsbjerg added.

AI software accounted for the largest share of the overall AI market in 2021.

The four AI software categories  AI Applications Delivery and Deployment, AI Applications, AI System Infrastructure Software, and Artificial Intelligence Platforms delivered more than $340 billion in market value in 2021 with AI Applications representing nearly half the total.

Artificial Intelligence Platforms delivered the strongest year-over-year growth at 36.6 percent, albeit from a smaller baseline.

With nearly 300 companies vying for opportunities to gain share, the AI Applications market remains highly competitive, said the IDC.

The AI Services market saw its total value increase 22.4 percent year over year to $24 billion in 2021.

AI Hardware was both the smallest ($18.8 billion) and fastest growing (38.9 percent year over year growth) segment of the AI market.

Received unanimous response from team-mates on inclusion of Alex Hales: Buttler

0

England white-ball skipper Jos Buttler has said he received a unanimous response from team-mates on bringing 33-year-old opening batter Alex Hales into the T20I squad, following the player failing a drugs test in 2019 and being left in the cricket wilderness for three years owing to the misdemeanor.

Buttler, who is currently in Pakistan with the England T20I side, though he is unlikely to play in the first five matches of the seven-game series due to a calf injury, said he had spoken to several players in the side to ensure no one would have an issue with Hales’s presence in the side.

Hales has got a second opportunity after he failed a recreational drug test just before the 2019 World Cup at home under then-skipper Eoin Morgan, and he is keen to make up for lost time under the new set-up of skipper Buttler and coach Matthew Mott.

Morgan had claimed in 2019 following Hales’s misdemeanor with recreational drugs that the opener had “shown a complete disregard” for team values, effectively closing the door for the batter till such time he was at the helm.

After Morgan retired from international cricket recently, and Jonny Bairstow suffered a freak injury, Hales made a return to the white-ball side under the new setup and is hoping to stake a strong claim for a permanent berth with good performance in Pakistan.

Buttler said he had consulted the squad before Hales came into the side.

“I spoke to lots of the senior players to make sure that no one would have any issues with Alex being back in the team if we wanted to select him,” Buttler was quoted as saying by The Cricketer in Karachi. “No one had any issues.

“He’s (Hales) obviously been in excellent form. We know what a talented player he is and he’s gained a lot of experience as well since the last time he played for England,” added Buttler.

“It’s no secret that when Alex got left out of the 2019 World Cup squad, Eoin did a similar kind of thing (speak to all his teammates to get their opinion). He spoke to many of the senior players, all of the coaching staff and as a team, I think it’s important that you give ownership to other guys and gather opinions.

“I just wanted to double-check. I had my own view, but I wanted to just make sure that everyone was on the same page. Everyone was, so that’s great. I’m just looking forward to having him back in and around the group. It won’t be long until (stand-in skipper for Pakistan tour) Moeen Ali is taking the mick out of him again and all will be well.”

Hales has played extensively in Pakistan and Australia, with the 33-year-old giving impressive performances for his franchise in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the Big Bash League (BBL). In 28 PSL matches, he has notched up 895 runs while he is the BBL’s highest overseas scorer, with 1,857 runs in 60 innings, according to the report.

“He’s (Hales) played for a lot of franchises and had great success out here at the PSL,” added Buttler. “Looking ahead to the (T20) World Cup, his Big Bash record is fantastic. Australia is a place that he’s done well, and so he seemed the obvious pick.”

‘At the end, I am competing with myself,’ Varun Aaron is hopeful about his India comeback

0

Fast bowler Varun Aaron is not worried about the cut-throat competition and is hopeful of his India comeback, saying he is competing with himself only and believes he can play for any team at his best.

The 32-year-old recently parted ways with his state side Jharkhand and will play for Baroda in the upcoming 2022-23 season of domestic cricket.

The Indian cricket team currently has a plethora of options in the fast bowling department and have serious competition. So, making a comeback for Aaron, who last played for India in 2015 and has suffered many injuries since then, won’t be easy. However, the Jharkhand-born cricketer is optimistic about his chances.

“At the end of the day, the only person who I am competing with is myself. When I broke into the Indian team, great bowlers like Zaheer Khan, Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel, and Ashish Nehra were playing at that time. If I thought about the competition back then, I would have never made it into the team,” Varun told IANS in an exclusive interview.

“So similarly, my focus has always been myself, and I know that I, at my best, would make myself with the team,” he added.

There was a time when most budding cricketers wanted to become batters but things have changed drastically in the last few years. Nowadays, youngsters are keen to take up fast bowling.

Aaron, who himself was part of the MRF Pace Academy in Chennai at the age of 15, and has seen Indian cricket closely for a very long time now, feel better athleticism and improved infrastructure have led to the transformation.

“I feel it’s great. I feel India is evolving as a sporting country. People have started taking up a lot more sports than just cricket. So with that, you get better-trained athletes. And, fast bowling is all about being athletic, it’s all about having stamina, being strong, and having speed,” the pacer said.

“Before guys used to play like cricket all day, they just played a little football but now kids are being trained in school. There are programs in place and also in India at the moment, we’ve got a great setup and structure to spot talent at an early age and invest in them.

The MRF Foundation has been doing it for a very long time — since 1988 I think. But now even the BCCI has started doing that, investing a lot in fast bowlers. So, the Indian fast bowlers for the last seven to eight years have been really, really good, which obviously generates more interest in fast bowling,” he added.

The experienced fast bowler was bought by the champions Gujarat Titans at the IPL 2022 mega auction and he played two matches for them during the season. Ashish Nehra was the head coach of the victorious Titans team. Interestingly, Varun has had the opportunity to play with him and also under his coaching.

Asked about Nehra’s personality, Varun said that the cricketer-turned-coach is a chilled-out guy and he is always there when a player needs him.

“He (Nehra) is really really chilled out. He is a very good player’s coach and always there when you need him, want to have a chat late at night or want to have an extra session in the nets,” he said.

“He is very much invested in every single player and wants the team to do well from Day one. During the IPL 2022, he kept the atmosphere at Gujarat Titans relaxed. There wasn’t any sense of desperation or pressure to win the title in the first year. The message was very clear — just play good cricket and let’s execute our plans. That’s all we had to get. Once we started winning, it was just really easy for us throughout the tournament,” he added.

Talking about the learning for his former statemate and legendary MS Dhoni, Varun said that the charismatic cricketer is very cool under any circumstance.

“Obviously, I made my India debut under MS. Later, I played for the state with him for the first time, because when he had played for India, I was playing under-14, so I never met him until I represented India,” said Aaron.

“When I finally met him, I was pleasantly surprised to know how down to earth he was, how approachable he was. His cricketing brain, like some of the ideas he gets on the field, is brilliant and we all have seen that obviously. What I would love to take away from him is — how cool and collected he is in any situation. And if he does well, or he doesn’t have the greatest game, he is still the same. So that’s something which everybody can take away from him,” he added.

Lebanon to adopt strict security measures after bank raids

0

Security forces in Lebanon will take strict measures amid mounting security concerns after a number of bank raids carried out by angry depositors demanding their savings, Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi said.

Mawlawi made the remarks on Friday during a press conference at the Interior Ministry, where security agencies were present to discuss the measures to keep the country safe and stable.

On Friday, several banks across the country were stormed by angry depositors demanding access to their savings, Xinhua news agency reported.

As a result, the Association of Banks in Lebanon announced that all banks will be closed for three days beginning on Monday.

“What we are witnessing today is an unhealthy phenomenon that threatens security and the country, and the security forces know very well how to tighten control,” he added.

Mawlawi called on depositors to remain calm as “deposits cannot be recovered by using these methods, which are illegal and can destroy the banking system and cause other depositors to lose money.”

Lebanon has been witnessing an unprecedented financial crisis that has forced banks to place heavy restrictions on depositors’ withdrawals.

‘We want all of this to end’: Putin to Modi on Ukraine conflict

0

Russian President Vladimir Putin has told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he is aware of India’s concerns over his country’s conflict with Ukraine and wanted the war to end.

During the bilateral meeting between both the leaders on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Samarkand, Putin was quoted on Friday as saying, “I know about your position on the conflict in Ukraine, and I know about your concerns. We want all of this to end as soon as possible. We will keep you abreast of what is happening there.”

The Russian President said this after Modi told him that “today’s time is not the time for war”.

This was the first face-to-face meeting between Modi and Putin after Russia had attacked Ukraine in February this year.

Mignon du Preez named ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2022 ambassador

0

Former South Africa women’s captain Mignon du Preez will be the ambassador of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2022 Qualifier taking place in Abu Dhabi, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Friday.

Two qualifiers for the mega event will be determined from the eight-team league tournament, which will run across two venues — Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium and Tolerance Oval — from September 18 to 25, featuring Bangladesh, Thailand, Ireland, Papua New Guinea (PNG), Scotland, the United Arab Emirates, the United States of America (USA) and Zimbabwe.

Du Preez, who retired from One-Day International (ODI) cricket but is still available to play in the T20 International (T20I) format for her country, will take on the role of mentor and commentator for the qualification tournament for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, which will be hosted in her home country in February next year.

No stranger to the various ICC events at different levels, du Preez has the experience and historical knowledge to give good value to the tournament participants and viewers who will be streaming the event from around the world.

“I am extremely excited and honored to receive this opportunity. This tournament is a moment in women’s cricket history and I’m so proud to be given the opportunity to impart my own knowledge and experience to players from around the world,” Du Preez in an ICC statement.

“There is a lot to look forward to for the two ultimate qualifiers, a place in a much bigger story of historical significance in the story of women’s cricket and a chance to put their team and country on the map — the T20 format lends itself to these kinds of results.

“I’m looking forward to the conversations and the opportunity for knowledge-sharing. I’ve been to my own fair share of qualifying tournaments in the past, and I can relate to the whole rainbow of emotions that comes with it. The sense of urgency and the exhilaration of succeeding and also, the devastation of failing in some instances. I hope that my own lived experiences will be an instrument of learning and inspiration to others,” she added.

Du Preez has excelled in all three formats of the game, scoring 1,805 runs in 114 T20Is including seven half-centuries and 3,760 runs in 154 ODIs, with two centuries and 18 half-centuries. She scored a century in the only Test she played.

The 33-year-old veteran has enjoyed great success as a captain from 2011 to 2016, leading in 46 ODIs and 50 T20Is.

She led South Africa to the semifinals of the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2014 and historic ODI series victories in India and Bangladesh.

Unlike her ‘Goodbye’ character, Rashmika believes in rituals, is superstitious

Rashmika Mandanna who acted in Pushpa movie with Allu Arjun, also who is doing her Hindi movie with stars Amitabh Bachchan and Neena Gupta in ‘Goodbye, said Tara character was totally opposite to her in film and she also shared importance about the making with the Big B.

She said, in fact, that Tara is more like her sister, Shiman, who is 16 years younger than her and demands a rational explanation for all that she’s asked to do.

“I am not at all like Tara, who doesn’t believe in rituals and questions everything,” Rashmika said in an interview with Media. “I have great faith in all the rituals and superstitions. I think my sister is more like her. She wants an explanation for everything. Like, why are you doing this, or why have I been asked to do this? So, yeah, Tara and my sister are quite similar in this way.”

She also talked about her bond with her sister. The relationship between them is more like that of a mother and daughter, rather than that of two sisters. Rashmika said: “My sister is very close to me and shares everything about her friends. If she has a fight with them, she tells me about it, not my mother.”

The 26-year-old actress, who’s now also called the ‘national crush’ post ‘Pushpa’, said that in the initial days of the shoot she came with her pup because he was she was too small.

“In the middle of it all, I got to know that she was ill and was stressing out, but the moment the people on the sets got to know about it, they came with a vet,” Rashmika said. “This is the energy that we had on the sets. It was extremely special.”

Talking about her first foray into Hindi cinema, Rashmika told Media: “I think initially it was very intimidating. But after that, I think it came to a point when we all sort of just blended in so beautifully as a family, even if we’re just a couple of actors coming in and performing.”

On sharing screen space with the Big B, Rashmika said: “I think for me, Bachchan sir was the picture of professionalism. Of course, he has his own aura, but he is most professional and at heart a simple man. The combination is so beautiful.”

Whenever she would be shooting with the Big B and Neena Gupta, Rashmika used to have one big complaint: “Everyone used to blend in so well and have fun. I would notice this and ask them, ‘How do you guys know each other?’ And they would said that they had been working together for a long time. That’s when I told them that I want to be part of their group.”

Recalling an incident on the sets, Rashmika said: “We were reading our lines and practicing the dialogues as Vikas (Behl) sir wanted the longest cut in one go. Bachchan sir was there, I was there and so were the others. Suddenly, Bachchan sir is like, now I want to go home. Why are we wasting time? I was like, did I say something wrong, because this line was not there in the dialogue. We all used to have a lot of fun like this.”

Referring to her initial hesitation to take on the role, Rashmika said during her conversation with Media: “When Vikas sir came with the script I was like, how I am going to do this. I am just a fun-loving and easy-going person and I asked him, ‘Have you approached the right person?’. The character is the complete opposite of me, but he showed confidence in me.”

She continued: “I just got to know that my eyes can emote either sadness or anger, and these are two emotions I can express very well. Right now, I am experimenting with my craft; There’s no fun in doing the same thing again and again.”

Rashmika, who made her acting debut with the 2016 Kannada film ‘Kirik Party and launched in Telugu with ‘Chalo’ and in Tamil with ‘Sulthan’, is entering Bollywood with ‘Goodbye’.

Directed by Vikas Bahl, and produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor, the film also features Sunil Grover, Pavel Gulati, Ashish Vidyarthi, Elli AvrRam, Sahil Mehta, and Shivin Narang in supporting roles. ‘Goodbye’ is set to release on October 7.

WHO strongly advises against antibody treatments for Covid patients

0

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has strongly advised against antibody treatments for Covid-19 patients, saying antibody drugs sotrovimab and casirivimab-imdevimab are not working on new variants like Omicron.

These drugs work by binding to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, neutralizing the virus’s ability to infect cells.

A WHO Guideline Development Group of international experts in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) BMJ said that almost all well-informed patients would not choose to receive sotrovimab or casirivimab-imdevimab.

The strong recommendation replaces previous conditional recommendations for their use and is based on emerging evidence from laboratory studies that these drugs are not likely to work against currently circulating variants, such as Omicron.

In the same update, the WHO made a conditional recommendation for the use of the antiviral drug remdesivir in patients with severe Covid-19, and a conditional recommendation against its use in patients with critical Covid-19.

These recommendations are based on results from five randomized trials involving 7,643 patients, showing 13 fewer deaths per 1,000 patients with severe Covid-19 taking remdesivir, but 34 more deaths per 1,000 patients with critical Covid-19 taking the drug.

“These new trial data provided sufficiently trustworthy evidence to demonstrate benefits in patients with severe Covid-19, but not critical Covid-19. The panel considered the benefits of remdesivir to be modest and of moderate certainty for key outcomes such as mortality and mechanical ventilation, resulting in a conditional recommendation,” said the update.

The WHO also advised that three drugs used to treat arthritis – the IL-6 receptor blockers tocilizumab or sarilumab and the JAK inhibitor baricitinib – may now be combined, in addition to corticosteroids, in patients with severe or critical Covid-19.

This advice is based on new high-certainty trial evidence confirming a survival benefit for baricitinib with little or no serious adverse events when given in combination with corticosteroids and IL-6 receptor blockers.

However, the panel acknowledged some cost and resource implications associated with these drugs, which, they say, could exacerbate health inequities.

Previously, the WHO has made a strong recommendation for use of nirmatrelvir and ritonavir, and a conditional recommendation for molnupiravir for high-risk patients with non-severe covid-19. WHO advises against the use of ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine in patients with covid-19 regardless of disease severity.

World Cup, Olympic qualification key for Indian women’s football: EC member Pinky Bompal Magar

0

Women’s football in India has improved leaps and bounds over the last few years and is set to see more development, with two former India Internationals being a part of the AIFF’s Executive Committee.

Former Indian forward, Pinky Bompal Magar has been co-opted as an Eminent Player into both the Executive Committee and the Technical Committee, where along with the other members, she will take decisions that would shape the future of Indian Football.

A two-time SAFF Women’s Championship winner (2010 and 2012), Magar feels that doing well in some of the bigger international tournaments will go a long way in propagating women’s football in India.

“All of us in the Executive Committee and the Technical Committee want to work towards the development of football, and we are working very hard towards it,” said Magar.

“We all have a number of things that we want to discuss and take certain steps on, and we want to focus on them.

“One of the things is the regular participation of the Women’s National Team in the Asian Games, and the performance in the World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers. The Olympic Qualifiers are also coming up next year, and that is another area where we want to do well. Another critical issue, of course, is that of the rankings, for both the women and the men’s teams,” Magar said.

With the upcoming Technical and Executive Committee meetings to be held in just a few days, former India forward feels thankful to have the chance to be one of the decision-makers of Indian Football.

“I want to personally thank all the authorities that have made such a change happen, and also thank all the other eminent players for their support and understanding,” Magar said.

“The President (Kalyan Chaubey) was a player himself, and Secretary General Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran has been a FIFA Development Officer, so they very much understand what needs to be done to take Indian Football forward.”

Magar, who had also won Gold at the 2010 South Asian Games in Dhaka, Bangladesh, feels that the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which is being hosted in India, will be a great opportunity for the current batch of U-17 girls to get good exposure and improve themselves.

“I am very happy that the World Cup is happening in India. It’s a great opportunity for the girls to understand how to play at that level, which bodes very well for the future of the Senior National Team,” she said.

“They have my best wishes. I’d like to tell them to be confident and have faith in the home support that they will receive. It’s important for these girls to come through these age groups, as they get to grow every step that way,” Magar said.

While a lot still needs to change, women’s football in India certainly has come a long way.

“Football has moved miles ahead. The current players get a lot of things that we could never think of,” Magar stated.

“Their matches are being broadcast, which is always a big motivator for a player, and they get a lot of exposure, which will put them in good stead ahead of crucial matches.”

Zoom returns after suffering brief outage

0

Popular video-conferencing app Zoom is now back online after it went down for around an hour on Thursday.

Zoom’s status page revealed there was a “major outage” for around an hour, preventing many people from attending meetings. Zoom eventually addressed the outage at 11.37 a.m. ET, according to The Verge.

“We have resolved the issue causing users to be unable to start and join Zoom Meetings,” Zoom later said in a status message.

Users saw plenty of “an error occurred” messages, and most weren’t able to launch meetings. Zoom’s main website, zoom.us, even displayed a 502 gateway error for the majority of the outage.

Most reports showed trouble joining a conference and geographically, outage reports were streaming in from across the US and Europe on DownDetector, media reports said.

While the Zoom outage affected most users, some Zoom accounts were still able to connect using personal logins, but work and school accounts were heavily affected.

Zoom last experienced a major outage for two hours in 2020, with users unable to join meetings and webinars. Zoom eventually deployed a fix and got video calls up and running once again, the report said.

Badminton champion P.V. Sindhu talked about the legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar presenting her car after she won a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics (Rio).

She recalled how Sachin called her and congratulated her on the victory: “He called and congratulated me. Last time I remember when I participated in Commonwealth Games, 2014 for the first time, he told me that if I get a medal in the Rio 2016 Olympics then he will come and give me a car again. So after getting the medal, he ensured he came and presented me with the car, and I am really thankful to him as this gesture really made me happy.”

She further added praising Tendulkar for the support he gives to sports personalities.

“It’s very kind of him because along with him many people contributed to it. He supported a lot of sports people and this kind of support needs to be there for sports personalities so that it’s like a motivation for them to go much further and do well. These kinds of awards and rewards will give a lot more confidence to all sportspersons. I really like cars and I’m very thankful to him that he gave me a car.”

In a conversation with Kapil Sharma, she told him about getting injured during the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in which she won the gold medal in women’s singles.

So after the match, my physio team and my trainer were also there so I told them I don’t know what happened but it’s a lot. My heart and mind were focused on winning the medal. So, during the semi-final and final, I was only thinking that I have to give my best and I gave my hundred per cent and won the gold,” she concluded.

Yet another IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre has sought voluntary retirement from the service.

A 2005-batch IAS officer, Sreenivasulu was on inter-cadre deputation to his home state Andhra Pradesh from January 2016 to July 2022.

He is the fifth officer to put in his papers in the past month.

He returned to the parent cadre Uttar Pradesh in July and was posted as special secretary (Finance) on July 29. On September 6, he was transferred to the revenue department in the same capacity.

Earlier, Vidya Bhusan, a 2008-batch IAS officer, posted as managing director of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam, opted for voluntary retirement on September 5.

His wife, Alankrita Singh, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, was suspended by the state government on the charge of negligence in duty and indiscipline in April.

In August, three IAS officers Renuka Kumar (1987 batch), Juthika Patankar (1988 batch), and Vikas Gothalwal (2003 batch) opted for voluntary retirement.

Gothalwal, Sreenivasulu, and Bhusan have sought voluntary retirement on health grounds.

Uttar Pradesh IAS Association president RK Tiwari said, “IAS officers opting for voluntary retirement are not limited to Uttar Pradesh. In other states, too, several IAS officers have taken voluntary retirement.

“It is the personal decision of the officer to move out of the service for better options in the private sector. Voluntary retirement is not an uncommon phenomenon as earlier in Uttar Pradesh. Some IAS officers have opted for voluntary retirement and are serving on various posts in the private sector,” he said.

A senior IAS officer said the “changing working situation” in the service, political pressure, and better options in the private sector are stimulating the officers to take voluntary retirement.

Meanwhile, an appointment department officer said the voluntary retirement applications of Juthika Patankar and Vikas Gothalwal have been approved while the application of the remaining three officers is likely to be cleared soon.
