FIH Nations Cup: India to start campaign against Canada in December 11 opener

0

Having tasted success by finishing third in FIH Pro League 2021-22, the Indian women’s team will attempt to get promoted to the tournament proper from the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup to be held in Valencia, Spain from December 11-17 this year.

Indian women participated in the FIH Pro League 2021-22 as a one-off special invitee after a number of countries pulled out due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Now that the event is over, the Indian women will be attempting to rejoin the nine-team Pro League in the 2023-24 season.

“The FIH Hockey Nations Cup ushers a new dawn of promotion and relegation in the FIH Hockey Pro League with the winning team of the first FIH Hockey Nations Cup having the chance to be promoted to the 2023-24 FIH Hockey Pro League (provided they meet the necessary requirements for it)”, the sport’s world governing body said in a release on Monday.

“The FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup will run from December 11 to 17, 2022, in Valencia, Spain. The hosts Spain, will play in Pool A with South Korea, Ireland, and Italy; while India, Japan, Canada, and South Africa compete in Pool B,” said the FIH while releasing the pools and match schedule for the event.

The opening match will be played on December 11 in Valencia between India and Canada; two teams who are very familiar with each other have faced off in the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2022 as well as the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, within the past two months. The Final will be played on December 17, the release said.

The FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup will run from November 28 to December 4, 2022, in Potchefstroom, South Africa. The hosts South Africa will play in Pool A with France, Ireland, and Pakistan; while Canada join the Asian triumvirate of South Korea, Japan, and Malaysia in Pool B. The Indian men’s team had also finished third in the 2021-22 FIH Pro-League and will figure in the next edition too.

Champions League 2022-23: Different form for Real Madrid, Sevilla ahead of opening matches

0

Real Madrid and Sevilla kick off their UEFA Champions League campaigns on Tuesday with both sides in very different positions in La Liga at the start of the season.

Real Madrid travels to Celtic Park in Glasgow with a 100 percent winning record this season and the reigning European champions will expect to continue their winning start, despite their rivals’ excellent start to the season in Scotland.

Celtic welcome Real Madrid after thumping traditional rivals Rangers 4-0 in the Old Firm clash at the weekend, and over 60,000 fans will provide a tremendous atmosphere.

However, Real Madrid is a technically better side, with Vinicius Jr. in excellent form, while new arrival Aurelien Tchouameni has slotted perfectly into central midfield.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti rested Toni Kroos, Lucas Vazquez, and Antonio Rudiger at the weekend and they will probably start, with David Alaba shifting across to left-back and Fede Valverde also likely to start on the right in midfield.

Playing in front of their passionate home supporters, Celtic can be expected to try and pressure Real Madrid, but Madrid’s effectiveness on the break could well be the decisive factor once again.

Things are very different in Seville, where Sevilla entertains Manchester City after a dreadful start to the season.

The side that finished fourth in La Liga last season has just one point from a possible 12 and is clearly struggling after losing central defenders Diego Carlos and Jules Kunde over the summer, reports Xinhua.

Losing the two central defenders has also seen all the fullbacks lose confidence, and coach Julen Lopetegui was clearly looking for answers as Sevilla has torn apart time after time in their 3-0 defeat at home to Barcelona on Saturday.

It’s clearly not the best time to receive Manchester City, who are also going to move the ball around looking for spaces, with Erling Haaland in frightening form.

The striker has already netted 10 goals this season and is likely to add to that total on Tuesday night as the pressure mounts on Lopetegui.

Hiring at crypto exchange Coinbase up 33% despite recent layoffs

0

Despite laying off 1100 employees, leading cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, its full-time employee count stood at 4,977 at the end of the June quarter (Q2) — a 33 percent rise from the 3,730 workers it had at the end of Q4 2021, a report showed on Monday.

According to data provided by niche news publisher BanklessTimes.com, this is in stark contrast to the 18 percent reduction in workforce that Coinbase announced in June.

“Coinbase is currently advertising several full-time vacancies across a range of functions, including engineering, customer support, and marketing,” said BanklessTime’s Jonathan Merry.

While it’s true that the firm has made some redundancies, “it’s important to remember that it’s still growing. So while it may be trimming its workforce in some areas, the data suggests that it’s still expanding overall,” Merry added.

While Coinbase is one of the most valuable companies in crypto, it still has a long way to go to catch up to Google. The search giant employs more than 100,000 people and has a market cap of more than $1.4 trillion.

“The current market conditions are tough for everyone in crypto. However, it’s important to remember that the industry is still young and growing. While some companies are struggling, others are still hiring and expanding,” said the report.

Coinbase also faces stiff competition from other exchanges like FTX and Binance, which have been aggressively hiring in recent months.

FTX, for example, has more than doubled its workforce over the past year.

Binance, which is headquartered in Malta, has also been on a hiring spree. The company now employs more than 3,000 people, up from just 1,000 in 2019.

Coinbase reported a massive loss in both revenue and profit in the June quarter — logging $1.1 billion in a net loss as revenue declined from $2.033 billion to $803 million from a year-ago quarter which is a sharp drop of nearly 60 per cent.

In quarterly terms, the net revenue of Coinbase was down 31 percent compared to Q1, driven by lower trading volume.

KCR promises free power to farmers across India

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday predicted that a non-BJP government will definitely come to power at the Centre in the next elections and assured farmers that it will provide free electricity to farmers across the country.

Rao called for sending the BJP home in 2024. He urged people to back the slogan for “BJP-Mukt Bharat” and elect a democratic and secular government.

Addressing a public meeting in Nizamabad after inaugurating an integrated district collectorate complex, he, terming Narendra Modi government anti-farmer, said it was not ready to spend 1.45 lakh crores to provide free electricity to farmers but looted Rs.12 lakh crore in the name of Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) and loan waivers to corporates.

Claiming that Telangana is the only state in the country supplying 24 hours of free electricity to farmers, KCR announced when a non-BJP government comes to power, this will be extended to the entire country.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief alleged that Prime Minister Modi is hatching a conspiracy to install water meters on agricultural borewells.

He slammed the Modi government for not buying agricultural produce from the farmers, not ensuring remunerative prices, and conspiring to capture the lands of farmers.

“The BJP at the Centre has been selling everything like airports, ports, banks, and industries. Now there is a conspiracy to grab the lands of farmers,” he said.

The Chief Minister said under BJP’s rule unemployment has increased in the country and the rupee has fallen to a record low. Nothing has been done for Dalits, weaker sections, and women, he added.

He alleged that Modi is only busy toppling the opposition governments in states.

The TRS leader said with the blessings of the people he would be entering national politics. He said a beginning would be made from Nizamabad.

KCR called for a debate on what is happening in the country and for awareness among people. He said the BJP government which was fueling religious madness and hatred must be sent home.

“Should we allow the nation to burn in the flames of religious madness? Do you wish to see water flowing in the canals or the blood? Do you want to see crops or the blood drops,” he asked and urged the Indian farmers to ponder.

Instagram takes down PornHub’s official account

0

Meta-owned Instagram has taken down the official account for adult entertainment website PornHub amid pressure from civil rights groups. The company, however, did not reveal the reason behind the move.

Before the Instagram account was removed, Pornhub had 13.1 million followers and more than 6,200 posts, reports Variety.

On its Instagram account, Pornhub shared non-pornographic videos and images but it “directly promoted pornography” and featured videos to encourage people to become pornography performers.

The screenshots shared by anti-PornHub campaigner Laila Mickelwait suggest the account was taken down for violating Instagram’s community guidelines.

The move comes after Visa and Mastercard cut off payment privileges of TrafficJunky, the advertising arm of Pornhub parent company MindGeek.

There has been widespread criticism of PornHub for facilitating “child abuse material” on its platform in recent years.

In 2020, Visa and Mastercard stopped processing payments on PornHub due to the presence of “unlawful content” on the platform.

Dawn Hawkins, CEO of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, said that “Instagram is courageously choosing to stop partnering with Pornhub, and it is time for all corporate entities to follow its example”.

Pornhub’s Twitter account with 3.4 million followers still remains active. Its official YouTube channel has 882,000 subscribers, where it shares “safe-for-work” video content.

Ace Indian ice speed-skater Shruti Kotwal talks about the importance of mental health for sportswomen

0

India’s fastest female ice speed-skater, Shruti Kotwal has emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy mental balance for women in sports.

Shruti, who is currently training in the United States for the upcoming Dessert Classic and America Cup, said the championships are scheduled to be held later this month and athletes from all over the world are training physically and mentally to win a place in the podium in their respective categories.

Shruti, who moved out of the comfort of her home in India early in life to get access to world-class training facilities and faced challenges like homesickness, loneliness, and culture shocks, said besides physical training and nutrition, there is an equal need to keep one’s mental health in check, informed a release on Monday.

Commenting on this aspect of a sportsperson, especially a woman’s life, Shruti said, “Mental health is as important as physical health. Lack of knowledge and not having enough awareness about mental health in my younger days hampered my physical health too and naturally affected my performance.”

“Now I take care of my mental health by trying to maintain a balance between my personal and professional life. Taking breaks to recharge and regularly do little things in my day-to-day life like pursuing stress-busting hobbies. Trying to have a little social life and making friends outside the world of sports can be restful and a good change for the mind,” she said.

“A healthy balance between work and life will increase the shelf life of an athlete! Enjoying the sport sounds cliche but it is imperative,” Shruti added.

Shruti has consciously inculcated yoga and breathing exercises in her schedule. “In ice speed-skating, you are racing against the clock. You are trying to beat your own timing so your biggest competitor is yourself. Getting faster with each race means getting better timing and that is a personal accomplishment each time you get a personal best. This can take a toll on the minds of a lot of athletes and they end up living in a lot of anxiety and nervousness most of the time,” she said.

She added, “I try to incorporate yoga into my week as and when I get time. It helps relax my mind as well as my body. If I am exhausted after really hard workouts, I ensure practicing breathing exercises and meditation to calm down and increase my lung capacity.”

From cell coding to personal data ownership: 9 technologies to shape our future

0

Technologies like brain-computer interfaces, cell coding, personal data ownership, and decentralized commerce are among 9 emerging technologies that have the potential to change the world over the next 10 to 20 years, according to a new report.

While brain-computer interfaces and cell coding could lead to breakthroughs in how we treat disease, personal data ownership, and decentralized commerce aim to put power back in the hands of consumers and sellers.

Technologies like AI auditors and passwordless authentication protect against cyberattacks, data breaches, and hidden biases, according to CB Insight’s ‘Our Game Changers 2022′ report.

Other technologies stand to redefine chip design (neuromorphic computing), scientific measurement (commercial quantum sensors), and electronics (lab-grown diamonds).

“Quantum sensors can detect even the slightest change in the environment. These devices are being built for a wide array of applications – including underground mapping and medical imaging – and can be smaller, cheaper, and thousands of times more precise than conventional rivals,” the report mentioned.

AI systems, especially those powered by machine learning (ML), are vulnerable to bias and data poisoning (an attack that tampers with a model’s training data).

“With more than 55 percent of global companies using AI, these threats can have massive consequences across sectors. To mitigate these risks, startups are integrating software into AI systems to audit and amend problems in the data,” the findings showed.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) systems can detect and quantify brain signals and translate them into device commands to accomplish a user’s intent – such as typing out words or moving a robotic arm.

Historically, digital platforms have owned consumers’ personal data, reaping almost all of the benefits when monetization opportunities arise.

Now, a new breed of startups is leveraging Blockchain to return data ownership to consumers and create new opportunities for monetization.

“The transfer of personal data from individuals to corporations has often left it unprotected and underappreciated, creating conditions for abuse (e.g., data breaches, manipulative advertisements),” the report mentioned.

In decentralized commerce, merchants can tokenize physical products and services as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) — allowing buyers to receive a digital representation that they can then resell or redeem for the physical asset.

By transacting on the Blockchain, the two parties bypass centralized e-commerce platforms that traditionally take a cut, while preserving transparency and authenticity.

Arshdeep inspiration for youth: Punjab Sports Minister

0

Punjab’s Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer on Monday came in the support of pace bowler Arshdeep Singh, who is being trolled for inadvertently dropping a catch during the Asia Cup match between India and Pakistan in the UAE.

Hayer said that Arshdeep is a player full of potential and much is expected of him in the near future. He is an inspiration for hundreds of youth.

The Minister also spoke with the cricketer’s mother Baljit Kaur, who is in Dubai, on the phone and assured her that the entire country stands firmly behind Arshdeep.

He also said on returning to the country, he would personally welcome the cricketer.

The minister also tweeted in support of the player, “Victory or defeat is given in-game. @arshdeepsinghh is an upcoming star who carved out a niche in a short span. Performed excellently against Pakistan. Regressive psyche to troll him on the drop of just a catch. Arshdeep is the future of the nation. Inspiration for youth. Hate has no place in sports.”

Ethic character-building new lesson will be included in the Bengal school syllabus soon: Mamata Banerjee

As Bengal CM said, new the section for “character building” will be included in the Bengal syllabus soon.

Based on the West Bengal government and the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress with the force of corruption situation, a new statement has been announced on this particular subject.

Mamatha declares the statement about the new subject of character building in the syllabus when giving the felicitate to teachers on the occasion of ‘the Teacher’s day” On Monday.

Mamatha asked Bratya Basu who is the State Education minister about the quick process of adding subjects in the function.

The chief minister also made a significant statement on the occasion when she said that a person is not known by the property he or she owns. “How much money one owns is not the only identity of a person. Always remember the money you own today might perish tomorrow. Whether I will remain honest or not will depend on me only. All fingers are not the same. Just as there are good people in society, there are also bad people. So, for some bad people it would be unfair to malign the entire society,” she said.

To recall, since the time Partha Chatterjee and Anubrata Mondal were arrested in connection with teachers’ recruitment and cattle smuggling scams respectively, several Trinamool Congress leaders had been facing public wrath and humiliation. Several top Trinamool Congress leaders, including the chief minister, had been insisting in public meetings that it would be unfair to malign the entire party for the wrongdoings of some.

Speaking at the teachers’ felicitation program, the chief minister also said that at times even good people adopt the wrong path because of ill associations or mental depression.

The ongoing imbroglio over the teachers’ recruitment scam could have been solved much before had there not been constant public interest litigations (PIL) filed in the matter. “These legal hassles are delaying the entire process. I admit there had been some mistakes. But at least we should get a chance to rectify them,” the chief minister said.

According to her, the irregularities in the Trinamool Congress regime are coming to the limelight because of proper documents and papers. “During the previous Left Front regime, they used to destroy all papers and documents,” she alleged.

Harmful areas will be identified with help of Cyborg cockroaches soon.

0

The system has been structured by the international research team to find out harmful areas and dangerous places with help of cyborg cockroaches by fixing the wireless remotes and observing them.

According to a paper published in the journal npj Flexible Electronics, the module is powered by a rechargeable battery attached to a solar cell which ensures the continuous flow of energy through the battery.

“The team experimented with Madagascar cockroaches, which are approximately 6 cm long. They attached the wireless leg-control module and lithium polymer battery to the top of the insect on the thorax using a specially designed backpack, which was modeled after the body of a model cockroach,” said LeKenjiro Fukuda, lead researcher at RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research (CPR).

Despite the mechanical devices, ultrathin electronics and flexible materials allow the insects to move freely, making cyborg insects a practical reality.

“Considering the deformation of the thorax and abdomen during basic locomotion, a hybrid electronic system of rigid and flexible elements in the thorax and ultrasoft devices in the abdomen appears to be an effective design for cyborg cockroaches,” said Fukuda.

Since abdominal deformation is not unique to cockroaches, “our strategy can be adapted to other insects like beetles, or perhaps even flying insects like cicadas in the future,” he added.

Researchers have been attempting to design cyborg insects — part insect, part machine — to help inspect hazardous areas or monitor the environment.

However, for the use of cyborg insects to be practical, the inclusion of an onboard solar cell is the best solution so far.

CPL 2022: Second straight win for Barbados; Patriots endure second abandoned match

0

The Barbados Royals won a second match in succession with a comfortable DLS victory against Saint Lucia Kings in the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Royals scored 162 for seven in their 20 overs and St Lucia’s chase was interrupted by rain and their target was changed to 103 in nine overs. Lucia needed 103 to win in nine overs as the target was reduced, managed only 91 for 4, and lost by 11 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method.

The other match between Guyana Warriors and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots was abandoned without a ball being bowled. It was the second time in four matches that Patriots had their match abandoned and they lost both the other matches.

It was the St Lucia Kings, who won the toss and put Barbados in to bat with the weather looking like it was going to affect the game. The decision backfired as Kyle Mayers and Rahkeem Cornwall got off to a flyer in the Power Play with 49 in 4.5 overs before Cornwall was dismissed for 32 off 17 balls.

The scoreboard ticked along despite a slowdown in the middle overs but the Royals got to 162 for seven.

And then Mayers removed the top order with a two-over spell of four wickets for four runs.

Even as rain threatened to end the match with a no result, the DLS reset the total to 103 to win from 9 overs. Faf Du Plessis and Alzarri Joseph took the game down to the last over but still fell short.

When Mayers departed for 36 the score was 76 for 2 and the Royals looked set for a huge total. But between the 13th and 17th over there were no boundaries and wickets fell regularly. Then some late hitting from David Miller and Joshua Bishop ensured a competitive total.

Kyle Mayers, who does not bowl regularly, produced a devastating two-over spell. He dismissed Johnson Charles and Roston Chase’s middle stump before also dismissing Mark Deyal and Roshon Primus to leave the Kings at 10 for four. Then came to the rain and the target was reduced and the Kings needed a near-impossible 93 runs from 30 balls. Alzarri Joseph and Faf Du Plessis did give it and shot and came close but then fell short.

Brief scores:

Barbados Royals:

162/7 in 20 overs (Kyle Mayers 36, R Cornwall 32, Mark Deyal 2/15) beat St Lucia 91/4 in 9 overs (Faf du Plessis 47 not out, Alzarri Joseph 29 not out, Kyle Mayers 4/4) by 11 runs (D/L Method).

NASA-funded tech helps create clothing to handle menopause symptoms

0

NASA has revealed that the London-based company Fifty One Apparel is using its technology to help women to stay comfortable during menopause through a range of temperature-regulating clothing.

Named after the average age when women begin to experience menopause, the company’s clothing maintains the temperature-regulating properties using the Outlast technology once funded by NASA but retains the look and feel of high-end fabrics.

“I did some initial research to find out what was on the market, and there was absolutely nothing apart from nightwear,” Nicholson said in a statement.

While exploring high-tech fabrics for regulating temperatures, Fifty One’s owner Louise Nicholson found that these products tended to be cooling fabrics, which ignored the cold flashes that often follow hot flashes during menopause, said the US-based space agency.

Her search soon brought her to a technology called Outlast.

In the 1980s, NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston was looking for ways to improve insulation in spacesuit gloves. The center entered into a Small Business Innovation Research contract with the Triangle Research and Development Corporation to explore the use of phase-change materials, which maintain a steady temperature as they change phase from solid to liquid or vice-versa.

Triangle was able to demonstrate the effectiveness of a temperature-stabilizing fabric insert for a spacesuit glove. While the technology never went into space, Gateway Technologies (now called Outlast Technologies) acquired exclusive patent rights from Triangle and soon began marketing it under the name Outlast.

Outlast has been used in numerous products, but Nicholson noticed that there were not any brands using this technology specifically for menopause.

The initial products, a line of shirts in four styles, were first sold to consumers in London, and later the company expanded to e-commerce, selling tops, bottoms, and nightwear globally. It is further expanding its range of Outlast-based products, including accessories like scarves, facemasks, and turbans.

As of 2021, the US is Fifty One’s second-largest market after the UK.

Made a conscious effort to strike at a higher pace; but plan changed due to losing wickets: Kohli

0

On August 28, Virat Kohli, making an international comeback after a break of a month and a half, was scratchy in top-scoring with 35 against Pakistan. In his 100th T20I game, Kohli had streaks of luck – a thick edge was dropped in the slips on the second ball he faced. There were tons of inside and outside edges falling short of fielders or shielding the stumps.

But, again on a Sunday, in the Super Four match against Pakistan, the fluency and timing which eluded Kohli a week ago were there. He top-scored with 60 off 44 balls, hitting four fours and a six, while running hard between the wickets and was superb against pacers apart from punishing anything short.

But it was the six which got him his fifty in 36 balls, which was hit with some style. Shuffling towards off-side, Kohli whipped elegantly off his wrists off Mohammad Hasnain to send the fuller delivery over deep mid-wicket, giving scores of fans delight and excitement over seeing the talismanic batter in full flow.

Unfortunately, Kohli didn’t get much support as others around him fell in a bid to go big, forcing Kohli to delay pressing the accelerator pedal and go deep for India to post a competitive 181/7, which wasn’t enough to deny Pakistan a thrilling five-wicket win.

“Today (In Sunday’s match), I was making a conscious effort to strike at a higher pace. When we lost wickets, there was communication and our plans changed, where I had to bat till the 18th with Hooda. If there were a couple of batters, I would’ve gone with the same tempo and tried to hit more boundaries or sixes. But again, I ended up being in a situation where I had to go deep,” said Kohli in the post-match press conference.

Kohli was appreciative of how Pakistan pulled back in the back end of the innings and stated that he would continue to bat in the same way, as he did in Sunday’s game while batting first in the future. “I thought Haris Rauf bowled a great last over. He nailed those slower balls and yorkers, with that pace when you execute, it’s always difficult to get it away. I’m going to continue – especially batting first – to bat the (same) way, trying to take the game on and stay ahead of the asking rate, understanding the conditions, and just bat freely.”

“As long as I am in a good space and confident of my batting, I know I can bat in many ways. It’s just about getting back into the groove and getting confident with how you’re playing and once that happens then the situation dictates how you need to play.”

In Sunday’s match, India reverted back to its aggressive, ultra-attacking approach with the bat. Though it got them 181/7, they were also hampered by the loss of Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, and Hardik Pandya in the middle overs.

Kohli pointed out that the loss of wickets in the middle overs in itching to get 20-25 extra runs wasn’t a cause of worry, as when the approach does work, it will make a difference in India’s totals.

“If you’ve seen the way we’ve been playing, it’s given us the results we need, and in our middle overs, the run rate has also improved. It’s something I, as a batsman, really took keen notice of, and I knew that is one area we need to keep improving on. We’ve spoken about this that sometimes it won’t come off, the way you want, and today, we lost a few wickets in the middle phase which didn’t allow us to go towards the 200 targets.”

“Because after (Deepak) Hooda and me, it was Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar Kumar), so the bowlers were to follow. That makes a bit of a difference, but we do possess the skills to analyze the situation and play accordingly as well. But given the situation, if we had a couple of wickets in hand, we could’ve got more runs.”

“We’re not disturbed by losing wickets through the middle overs, because that’s the way we want to play. We want to be able to get those 20-25 extra runs that can eventually make the difference in big games.”

Virat Kohli said after I leave test captain, Dhoni massaged me.

0

Stylish batter Virat Kohli recalled the time when he left Test captaincy in January 2022 after the series against South Africa and said that former Indian skipper MS Dhoni was the only person who texted him after his decision.

“When I left Test captaincy, I received a text from only one person that I have played with earlier, and that is MS Dhoni,” Kohli said in a media interaction after the Asia Cup match between India and Pakistan on Sunday.

“Many people have my contact number, and there are many people who keep giving suggestions on TV, but I didn’t receive a message from any of them. So when a connection with any person is genuine enough, it comes out in such a manner, because there is a sense of security on both sides.

“Neither I want anything from him, nor does he want anything from me. And neither was I ever insecure of him, nor was he insecure of me about anything,” Kohli added.
He further said if someone was actually interested in helping him out, they would have contacted him personally.

“If their criticism was genuine, they could have messaged me in person. The way I live my life with honesty, I would have talked one-on-one with a person that I wanted to help out.”

Earlier on Sunday, Kohli equaled the record for most fifties in T20Is against Pakistan. Kohli smashed his 32nd T20I fifty (60 off 44). The half-century was Kohli’s fourth against Pakistan in T20Is.

He had also made a half-century against Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match last year at the same venue.

Kohli’s impressive run against Pakistan is reflected in his numbers: a total of 406 runs against them, the most by an Indian against Pakistan in T20Is, at an average of 67.66 and a strike rate of 119.06.

Nawaz can win on two legs spinners, says Babar Azam: Asia Cup 2020

In Pakistan’s thrilling five-wicket win over India in the Super Four match of Asia Cup 2022, where fortunes swung wildly, left-arm spin all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz played a decisive role in getting his side to victory.

With his four overs, Nawaz conceded just 25 runs and took out Suryakumar Yadav in a tight spell which applied brakes on India’s innings after Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul came out all guns blazing in a 54-run opening stand.

Then in chasing 182, Nawaz was given a promotion to number four. He rose to the occasion by striking 42 off 20 balls, including six fours and two sixes, giving a much-needed impetus to Pakistan’s successful chase with a ball to spare.

After the match ended, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam revealed Nawaz’s promotion happened as he felt a left-handed batter could succeed against India’s leg-spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravi Bishnoi.

“I try to keep things simple. Credit goes to the team for the effort they put in. I thought they had an edge after the way they utilized the PP. But the bowlers came back to restrict them. I didn’t fire today but Nawaz and Rizwan’s partnership was outstanding. I thought Nawaz could succeed because they had two leg spinners operating so we sent him up. Our spinners and fast bowlers at the death set the stage for us,” said Azam in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Nawaz, rightfully adjudged player of the match for his all-round show, showed honesty in his strategy with both bat and ball. “For a left-arm spinner, it’s important to stick to the basic line and length. If one or two balls turn, that puts doubt into the batters’ minds. After that, I try and stick to line and length.”

“We needed 10 runs per over when I walked in to bat so I knew I had to attack every chance I got. My mind was clear that I’d hit out at every ball in my zone. I didn’t try and overplay, which you sometimes can when you’re under pressure.”

Wicketkeeper-opener Mohammad Rizwan, who anchored the chase with a 51-ball 71 and shared a crucial stand of 73 with Nawaz, revealed that his plan was to stay as long as possible at the crease for long during the chase.

“The whole world is watching this match. This game is as valuable as a final. Every player will try to go give his 100 percent. The plan, as always, was to score against the new ball with one of us (himself and Babar Azam) batting long.”

“I tried to stay till the end. We know our strengths, we have depth in our batting, and we have power-hitters who are capable of hitting around 45 runs off the last four overs. So we didn’t panic.”
