Rajat Dahiya lost 18 kilos for his role in ‘Sanjog’

Rajat Dahiya had to shed 18 kgs of weight to play 30-year-old Gopal in the show ‘Sanjog’ opposite Kamya Panjabi.

The actor, who was playing a bulky middle-aged man in his last show ‘Tujhse Hai Raabta’ has to put in a lot of effort to depict the personality of a well-built young man in his present serial.

He shared: “I had to put in a lot of effort for the character of Gopal because earlier, in ‘Tujhe Hai Raabta’, I was playing a 55-year-old man, who was bulky. In Sanjog, I am playing a fit guy in his 30s.”

Rajat opted for a strict diet and regular exercise to get the kind of physique needed for his role.

“So, to get into Gopal’s character, I worked out regularly for more than 3 to 4 months while maintaining a proper and strict diet. Through this, I have managed to lose almost 15 to 18 kgs of weight and I have been maintaining this physique ever since.

“I just hope the audience will like me in this new avatar and shower me with a lot of love and appreciation,” he added.

‘Sanjog’ is a story of two mothers Amrita, played by Shefali Sharma, and Gauri, portrayed by Kamya Panjabi, and how they do everything for their daughters yet find them completely opposite to them in their behaviour and approach towards life.

Asia Cup 2022: Result will be with whoever remains brave, keeps calm, says Rizwan ahead of India clash

0

Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan feels that whoever is able to remain brave and keeps a calm head will be the winner of the marquee Super Four clash against India in Dubai on Sunday.

After losing to India by five wickets in their opening Group A clash last week on Sunday, Pakistan will return to Dubai International Stadium this Sunday to take on their arch-rivals again. Pakistan managed to grab the final Super Four spot after thrashing Hong Kong by 155 runs at Sharjah on Friday to set up another showdown with India in the tournament.

“Playing against India is always a pressure game. The whole world, even beyond Asia, waits for it. Playing against India feels like a final as people in both countries are eager to watch the game. It helps in keeping things as normal as possible. The pressure will be equally on India and us, but the result will be with whoever remains brave and keeps calm,” said Rizwan after the match against Hong Kong ended.

Rizwan, who was adjudged ‘Player of the Match for his unbeaten 78 off 57 balls against Hong Kong and carried his bat throughout the match, insisted that his team is trying to keep things simple ahead of the clash against India in order to reach the final.

“I tell players, whether you play India or Hong Kong, it’s a game of bat and ball. So keep it simple. Yes, it’s a big game and our confidence is high but only hard work is in our hands, as the result is from God. We have to play good cricket and make the final. Our fans demand that we give our best and it is visible this time that the boys are giving it their all.”

In the match against Hong Kong, pacers Naseem Shah and Shahnawaz Dahani were amongst the wickets. Rizwan felt that in absence of premier pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, Pakistan has got a chance to unearth a new-ball pace combination.

“I’ve talked to the bowlers before. I will be very honest here, no bowler from this group can replace Shaheen or fill in for his loss. This is my honest answer. The way Shaheen has performed in the past 1-2 years, no bowler can come into the side and fill his shoes.”

“But, we can get another Shaheen Shah and this is an opportunity for our other fast bowlers. The way Naseem and Dahani have performed, and Haris is already a part of the side, so we are hopeful to get one or two more Shaheen Shahs with us. We are famous for our solid fast bowlers. So if we get a new combination for the new ball, it will be very good for Pakistan.”

0

Zimbabwe’s 28-year-old leg-spinner Ryan Burl took five wickets as he guided the visitors to a historic three-wicket win against powerhouse Australia in the third and final One-day International here on Saturday.

Though Australia clinched the series 2-1, it was the manner in which the hosts capitulated which stood out, with nine of their batters scoring in single digits. Opener David Warner, with his patient 96-ball 94, helped the hosts to 141 before they were bundled out in 31 overs.

In reply, Zimbabwe notched up the required runs for the loss of seven wickets in 39 overs for a memorable win.

Brief scores: Australia 141 in 31 overs (David Warner 94; Ryan Burl 5/10) lost to Zimbabwe 142/7 in 39 overs (Tadiwanashe Marumani 35, Regis Chakabva 37 not out; Josh Hazlewood 3/30) by three wickets.

Twitter team to fight online extremism ‘vanishes’ after Musk takeover

0

Twitter’s ambitious plan to tackle extremism on its platform went for a toss when Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced to buy it, and in months after that, the health research team has disappeared, from 15 employees to just two, the media reported.

Twitter had partnered with Moonshot, a company that analyses violent extremists, to begin a project called ‘Redirect’ to curb the spread of harmful content on its platform.

According to The Verge, “the goal was to move the company from simply reacting to bad accounts and posts to proactively guiding users toward better behaviour”.

However, before the project could see the light of the day, Musk in April announced to buy the company for $44 billion, and all hell broke loose.

“Shortly afterward, employees who’d been leading the Moonshot partnership left. And in the months since Musk signed the deal, the health research team has all but evaporated, going from 15 staffers to just two,” the report said late on Friday.

The project sought to understand and address user behaviours.

“Instead of focusing on designating bad accounts or content, we seek to understand how users find harmful group content in accounts and then to redirect those efforts,” read an internal document.

Multiple former researchers told The Verge that the turmoil associated with Musk’s bid to purchase the company “was a breaking point and led them to decide to pursue other work”.

Some employees who remained were allegedly told to “deprioritise Redirect in favour of projects related to bots and spam”, as Musk wanted to know the exact number of spam accounts on the platform.

Twitter was yet to react to the report.

Another The Verge report claimed this week that Twitter planned to monetise adult content on its platform this year, by allowing adult creators to sell subscriptions on the micro-blogging platform, and become profitable in a jiffy.

US Open: Ons Jabeur needs three sets to advance; Kudermetova beats Dalma Galfi

0

Ons Jabeur, the fifth seed, ended her first week in the US Open with a three sets victory against American Shelby Rogers to reach the pre-quarterfinals for the third consecutive time here on Friday.

The victory pushed Jabeur’s record against Americans to 11-1 this season and put her into the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in her career.

The Tunisian is the first player from her country to do well in the Grand Slams.

It was a disappointing loss for Rogers, who for the past two years has dethroned several top seeds here in Flushing Meadows, including last year’s victory over No. 1 Ash Barty.

On Friday, the American put together a solid two sets of tennis that had the No. 5 seed scrambling across every inch of the court, and on a few occasions even had her diving onto the court to try to stay in the point.

But when Rogers blinked and served a double fault at 6-4, 4-4, Jabeur took the opportunity and never looked back, taking seven of the last 10 games to seal the win.

Veronika Kudermetova produced a quality performance on Day 5 at the 2022 US Open, fitting her status as the No. 18 seed as she dispatched No. 91 Dalma Galfi, 6-2, 6-0, in a 47-minute serving masterclass in the Grandstand.

The 25-year-old Kudermetova forced open the first set of the baseline contest, overcoming three consecutive aces by the Hungarian one year her junior to lead 3-2. Kudermetova was particularly dominant on first serves, delivering 78% in the first set before improving to an astonishing 100% in the second set. In her first two matches, Kudermetova won all 20 service games-helped by 14 aces-in straight-set dismissals of Donna Vekic and Maryna Zanevska, respectively.

Kudermetova, who is into the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in her career, is currently enjoying an all-time high No. 18 ranking. In 2021, she won a career-record 33 matches, including a final-round appearance at Abu Dhabi (losing to Aryna Sabalenka) before securing her maiden WTA Tour singles crown at Charleston.

Bairstow ruled out of England’s third Test against SA, Men’s T20 World Cup after freak lower limb injury

0

In-form England batter Jonny Bairstow on Friday was ruled out of English summer and Men’s T20 World Cup after suffering a freak lower limb injury while playing golf.

Bairstow, the leading run-scorer in Test cricket this year with 1061 runs in 13 innings at an average of 66.31, including six centuries and a fifty, had been earlier on Friday named in England’s squad for Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November.

Bairstow’s injury comes as a huge blow to England’s chances of sealing the Test series against South Africa when the third Test takes place at The Oval, starting from September 8 and their quest to claim a Men’s T20 World Cup title to be the first men’s team to hold 20-over and 50-over World Cup trophies at the same time.

“Bairstow sustained a lower limb injury in a freak accident whilst playing golf on Friday in Leeds. He will see a specialist next week to ascertain the full extent of the injury. A further announcement will be made in due course on who will replace Bairstow in England’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad,” said the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on their website.

In his Instagram story, Bairstow revealed he will need an operation for the lower limb injury which happened after slipping on a golf course earlier in the day. “Unfortunately I am going to be unavailable for all games/ tours in the immediate future. The reason being is that I have injured my lower leg in a freak accident and it shall need an operation.”

“The injury came when I slipped on the golf course this morning. I am gutted and want to wish everyone for this week at The Oval all the best firstly and the boys that are going to Australia for the T20 World Cup. Absolutely gutted! I will be back.”

ECB also informed that Nottinghamshire batter Ben Duckett, who played four Tests for England in 2016, has been added to the Test squad for the third Test at The Oval, which sets up as a series decider between the hosts and Proteas with a scoreline at 1-1.

England men’s managing director Rob Key had said that Bairstow would open the batting in T20 World Cup alongside Jos Buttler after designated opener Jason Roy was dropped due to poor form in English summer.

“The latest we could announce the World Cup squad was the 16th. So it wasn’t like we could use Pakistan. We’d be taking a gamble on him (Roy) finding form in that time. So we felt with the abundance of openers we had, and we felt Jonny Bairstow is one of the best openers in T20 cricket in the world – he’s done it in the IPL, but been very good in the middle order as well – we felt the best combination at this time was Jonny and Jos and we worked back from that point.”

Along with businessmen, film actors and cricketers have been buying land and building country homes in the scenic surroundings of Alibaug.

Former cricketer, national coach and commentator Ravi Shastri, too, had built a house in Alibaug about a decade ago.

Durand Cup: NorthEast United FC end campaign with a win over Sudeva Delhi

0

NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) ended their Durand Cup campaign with a win, overcoming Sudeva Delhi FC 2-0 in a Group D match at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium here on Friday.

Captain Dipu Mirdha scored the opener for the hosts while Gani Ahmed Nigam converted from the spot in stoppage time of the second half to round off a well-earned victory.

With this win, NEUFC finished fourth in the Group, ending their campaign with three points while Sudeva finished at the bottom of the table with two points.

Sudeva began the first half brightly and showed attacking intent. They maintained possession of the ball and created chances.

Sridarth Nongmeikapam broke through inside the box in the second minute itself, but his effort was feeble and Khoirom Jackson Singh in the NEUFC goal, brought about a comfortable save, his first of what was going to be a few in the half.

Jackson had to be alert again as Ghanian Issac Kwame Essel and Sukhandeep Singh tested him with attempted shots from various angles and distances from that same right-hand side, all in the first quarter of an hour.

NEUFC got one of their own in that time as well, when Dipu Mirdha, the brightest spot by a distance, in the NEUFC attack, took a long ranger which bounced dangerously close to Sachin Jha in the Sudeva goal, but he about managed to salvage the situation.

The Highlanders had another chance to score when Sandeep Thapa was found inside the box in some space. His powerful shot from close from the left-hand side of the Sudeva box forced Sachin into yet another tip-over.

NorthEast coach Subam Rabha changed personnel in the second half that saw his team play much better football. They maintained possession and coordinated well to create pressure on the Sudeva defence.

Substitutes Jithin M.S, Emil Benny, Gani Ahmed Nigam along with captain Dipu Mirdha created more and more chances for the home side.

The first goal then followed in the 64th minute by who else but Dipu Mirdha. Jithin had made a beautiful run from the left flank, dodging two defenders in the process of penetrating the box. He then delivered a cut-back pass inside the box and the onrushing Dipu finished with ease.

Minutes later Dipu had a chance to double NEUFC’s lead from a pass by Gani, but the forward blasted the ball over the bar in front of an open post.

NorthEast continued to maintain possession and did not give Sudeva any chance to create any meaningful attacks. They sealed the match in the sixth minute stoppage time from a penalty awarded, when Sudeva keeper Sachin brought down Dipu inside the box. The penalty was converted by Gani Ahmed, which was also the last kick of the match.

Jason Roy hit a bad patch of form at the worst time: Rob Key

0

England men’s cricket managing director Rob Key revealed the selectors spent the most time on deciding to omit Jason Roy from the England squad for Men’s T20 World Cup, saying that the right-handed opener hit a bad patch of form at the worst time.

On Friday, Roy was left out of England’s Men’s T20 World Cup squad and from seven T20Is tour of Pakistan as well as three T20Is trip to Australia before the mega event. Roy has struggled to get runs in England’s home summer, scoring just 78 runs in six T20Is, averaging 12.66.

Roy had been an integral part of England’s unit in white-ball cricket since 2015 and played a good role in the side winning the 2019 ODI World Cup at home. His ‘The Hundred’ campaign in 2022 for the Oval Invincibles was horrendous, with three ducks in four innings and his overall numbers in the competition standing at 51 runs in six innings.

“That (Roy selection) was the one we spent the most time on, trying to work out the best thing to do. Fiddly selection as much for logistics as anyone else. We worked out the World Cup 11 and squad for that, and worked back from there. We thought about the best opening pair for the World Cup. It’s unfortunate timing for Jason Roy as much as anything else. He’s hit a bad patch of form at the worst time,” said Key after the squad announcement.

With Roy now dropped, Key said Jonny Bairstow will open the batting alongside captain Jos Buttler. Bairstow had been batting in England’s middle-order in T20Is due to his ability to hit well against the spinners. He will now take up the role in which he excels well for the ODI side.

“The latest we could announce the World Cup squad was the 16th. So it wasn’t like we could use Pakistan. We’d be taking a gamble on him finding form in that time. So we felt with the abundance of openers we had, and we felt Jonny Bairstow is one of the best openers in T20 cricket in the world – he’s done it in the IPL, but been very good in the middle order as well – we felt the best combination at this time was Jonny and Jos and we worked back from that point,” added Key.

Key further revealed that Roy was informed of his exclusion from Men’s T20 World Cup squad apart from matches against Pakistan and Australia by Buttler. It was followed by Key as well as white-ball coach Matthew Mott speaking to him.

“He was obviously very disappointed. Gutted was the phrase he used. He wanted to make sure this wasn’t the end. You always feel these are long meaningful chats when you speak to players about this stuff. Actually Jos was the one who rang him. Jos wanted to be the one to tell him.”

“They obviously have a relationship and he felt he was the right person to tell him. Myself and Matthew Mott have spoken to him since. He’s obviously very disappointed and wants to have a chance to show he’s not finished in international cricket, which I don’t think he is.”

“I still think he’s a fantastic player but the timing has been awful for him, to lose form at that time. To not have a huge amount of time to stop, reset, and then find it again. Certainly in that white-ball series (against South Africa), the close nature of every game means once you got on a roll in one way it’s very hard to get out of.”

Key was sure that not being in the T20 World Cup doesn’t mark the end of Roy as a T20I opener and backed him to find form to get back into the set-up. “The game is about confidence as much as anything else. If he finds that again he too is one of the best openers around when he’s at the top of his game.”

“I don’t see it by any stretch that his T20 career is over. It’s just a case of him finding form, and I’m sure he will have plenty of opportunities in the abundance of T20 cricket that there is around the world to find that form again.”

“I certainly don’t think the age that he is that this is the end of Jason Roy. I would argue that the 50-over format is his strongest suit and we still see him as very much part of this set-up. Given his white-ball summer and then the Hundred we feel it’s too much of a gamble to continue going into Pakistan and straight into Australia.”

On a visit to PDS outlets in Kamareddy district of Telangana on Friday, the minister sought details of the costs incurred in per kilogram of rice disbursed through the PDS, by the central and state governments respectively.

Unhappy with the vague responses of the district administration officials to her query, she insisted the district collector furnish the details on priority.

Three Covid vax doses offer better protection from Omicron: Study

0

The third Covid-19 vaccine dose increases the level and duration of protection against the Omicron variant and hospitalisation compared to two vaccine doses, finds a new study.

The study, published in the journal PLOS Medicine, showed that two vaccine doses provide only limited and short-lived protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection with the variant.

“Our findings indicate that a third dose is necessary to maintain protection against infection for a longer time and to ensure a high level of protection against Covid-19 hospitalisation with the Omicron variant,” said researcher Mie Agermose Gram at Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen, Denmark.

“Continued emergence of new variants and waning vaccine durability requires ongoing evaluation of vaccine effectiveness against infection and hospitalisation to inform future vaccination strategies,” Gram added.

The emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants may decrease long-term vaccine durability, increasing the risk of infection and hospitalization.

However, evidence is limited regarding the vaccine effectiveness of three vaccines over time.

For this study, the team conducted a nationwide cohort study of all previously uninfected Danish residents aged 12 and older by accessing individual-level data.

The researchers then estimated vaccine effectiveness using vaccination status as a time-varying exposure, adjusting for age, sex, geographic location, and comorbidities before comparing infection and hospitalisation rates to unvaccinated individuals.

The researchers found that a third vaccine dose provided greater protection against infection and hospitalisation from the Omicron variant than with two vaccines and also that there was less evidence of waning protection.

Gajendra Singh Shekhawat’s daughter creates record

0

Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat’s daughter Suhasini Shekhawat has set up a new record by traversing the inaccessible highlands of the Ganga, Brahmaputra and Indus rivers in a single trip.

On Thursday, Suhasini, leading the team of ‘Indus Calling’ expedition, completed the longest ever rafting expedition on the river Indus. It started from Manesar near the Indo-China border and concluded near Kargil on the Indo-Pak border.

Apparently, these highlands lack oxygen and are filled with dangerous rocks.

Union Minister Shekhawat took to Twitter and shared the information.

He said that Suhasini’s dreams are different. “She is not afraid of difficulties and displays the confidence and talent of the daughters of India. Her courage at times amazes me. Daughters grow up and fulfill their father’s life journey with new hopes. I see myself in her,” he tweeted.

A Post Graduate in Political Science, Suhasini Shekhawat has a Diploma in Advanced Leadership from Oxford. Besides excelling in sports, she is also a great shooter.

In 2019, Suhasini was also a part of the 31-day ‘Ganga Invitation Campaign’. She covered a distance of 2500 km from Devprayag in Uttarakhand to Gangasagar in West Bengal through rafting.

She had joined the 917 km long Brahmaputra Invitational expedition in 2021, and did river rafting from Gelling, Arunachal Pradesh to Asmaralga in Assam.
