Stalin to meet Pinarayi today, Siruvani water sharing to be discussed

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will be meeting his Kerala counterpart Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday in Thiruvananthapuram.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is reaching Kerala to participate in the South Indian Chief Ministers’ conference, also being attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The discussions between the two Chief Ministers will be mainly centred around Siruvani and Mullaperiyar water sharing issues.

Located inside deep forests in Palakkad district of Kerala, the Siruvani dam is a major source of drinking water for the people of Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu.

Notably, after the 2019 floods in Kerala, the state waer resources department has been maintaining water levels below the Full Reservoir Level (FRL). The Kerala irrigation department has been maintaining the water level of Siruvani dam at 44 ft since 2019 instead of 49.5 ft which is the water level agreed between Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Lowering of water level by five feet will lead to a shortage of 122.05 mcft (million cubic feet) which is 19 per cent of the storage capacity of the dam.

The Water level in Siruvani dam has gone up following incessant rains in the catchment areas of the dam and on Thursday the water level touched 43.5 ft and Coimbatore receives 101.4 MLD of water from Siruvani. However once the water level touches 44 ft, the water will be discharged.

Sources in the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department told IANS that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister will take this matter up with his Kerala counterpart and try to convince him of the necessity of maintaining the FRL of Siruvani dam so that drinking water for Coimbatore is not affected.

Mullaperiyar dam issue which is again a contentious one between Kerala and Tamil Nadu will also come for discussion during the meeting between the two Chief Ministers.

DiCaprio, Gigi Hadid hooking up ‘a few times’ after split from Camila

Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio is said to have been quietly seeing model Gigi Hadidf following his split from longtime girlfriend Camila Morrone.

According to Life & Style, DiCaprio has “hooked up” with the 27-year-old model, who is “exactly his type”, “a few times” since his breakup, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“Leo and Gigi have hooked up a few times this summer,” an insider tells the site.

The source goes on sharing: “They have known each other for several years. They’re super attracted to each other,” before adding, “She is exactly his type: gorgeous, sexy but low-key with a one-of-the-guys attitude.”

The source further notes that the pair is not likely to make things official between them anytime soon.

“It’s casual and not a constant thing. But they have lots of mutual friends,” the source claims, while another source says that the actor and Hadid are hanging out just as close friends.

DiCaprio and Morrone reportedly broke up “over the summer” after dating since 2017.

As for the reason why their relationship ended, a source previously told the news outlet: “Leo and Camila have had a few breaks in the past few months. It’s a matter of deciding whether they are in it for the long haul or just going to let it die.”

The source added: “With all of Leo’s girlfriends, once she became focused on work and had her own priorities, he got distant. Rather than have dramatic breakups, they took time apart.” Despite their breakup, there are reportedly “no bad feelings” between the exes.

Seemingly enjoying his newly single status, Leo has been “out every night” in Malibu, according to a recent report.

A source told Page Six, “Leo has been out every night partying a he’s been hanging with his old crew and some girls. I thought that was a little weird when [Camilla] was in St. Tropez.”

During one of his recent outings, he enjoyed the companion of Russian model Maria Beregova.

The ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ star was caught having fun with the 22-year-old brunette beauty during a yacht party in St. Tropez back in July.

Gigi, she was in an on-and-off relationship with Zayn Malik from 2015 until their split in 2021, following the singer’s dispute with her mother Yolanda Hadid. They share a child together, a-year-old daughter named Khai.

Indonesia has viable path to reach net zero by 2060: IEA

0

Indonesia has a viable path to reaching its target of net-zero emissions by 2060, bringing major benefits to its citizens in the process such as more secure and affordable energy supplies, a new International Energy Agency (IEA) report said on Friday.

But key policy reforms and international support will be crucial to the success of the clean energy transition in the world’s fourth most populous country as it enters a new phase of its economic development.

Net zero means cutting greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, with any remaining emissions re-absorbed from the atmosphere, by oceans and forests for instance.

The IEA’s Energy Sector Roadmap to Net Zero Emissions in Indonesia — a collaborative project undertaken with the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) at the request of the government of Indonesia — was launched on Friday at the G20 Energy Transitions Ministerial Meeting in Bali under the country’s first G20 Presidency.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol and Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif also signed a Joint High-Level Statement that sets out a shared vision of Indonesia’s path to net zero, drawing on the Roadmap’s findings.

Indonesia’s economic development over the past half century has been a remarkable success story, lifting millions of people out of poverty and bringing electricity to almost all citizens across the country’s 17,000 islands.

Access to affordable supplies of energy from the country’s abundant resources as well as revenues from fossil fuel exports have been important drivers of this success.

Today, the clean energy transition offers huge opportunities for the next chapter of Indonesia’s development as it seeks to become an advanced economy by 2045.

According to the IEA Roadmap, many of the ingredients for reaching net-zero emissions and advanced economy status are the same: innovation, knowledge, technology, and economic diversification.

For instance, Indonesia’s export revenues from critical minerals, which are needed for many clean energy technologies, are set to be greater in 2030 than its largest ever export revenues from coal.

And even bigger opportunities exist if Indonesia can capture more of the clean energy value chain. At the same time, the clean-energy transition and economic diversification will have significant impacts on Indonesia’s coal-producing regions, demanding attention from policy makers to ensure a fair and people-centred transition.

The IEA Roadmap shows that by reaching net zero by 2060, Indonesia would reduce total household energy bills as a share of income from today’s level. For the country’s economy as a whole, the pathway to net zero by 2060 would lower oil import bills by one-third in 2030 compared with a business-as-usual scenario.

This saving on oil imports would by itself cover the extra cost the transition would require in terms of new investments — meaning that the transition would effectively pay for itself.

An even more ambitious transition by Indonesia and other countries around the world, as envisaged in the IEA’s global Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario, would yield even greater savings, the analysis shows.

Indonesia has the opportunity to show the world that even for a country that relies heavily on fossil fuel exports, a pathway to net-zero emissions is not only feasible but also beneficial, said IEA Executive Director Birol.

“We must be clear-eyed about the challenges, especially in areas that depend on the coal industry, but the economic opportunities more than compensate for the costs.”

“This Roadmap, which reflects the IEA’s status as the global authority and was conducted hand-in-hand with my ministry, sets out a clear and achievable path forward, based on energy efficiency, renewables and electrification,a said Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif.

“This demonstrates that a transition to net zero in Indonesia can be just, affordable and rich with opportunities.”

It was also found to generate a good immune response against the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants, and is expected to extend the durability of protection, Health Canada said.

Former Finance Secy Garg calls for ‘serious introspection’ on Q1 GDP growth

0

With India’s GDP growing at 13.5 per cent in the June quarter of the current financial year, less than the 20.1 per cent growth recorded in the corresponding period of last year and also lower than Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) prediction of 16.2 per cent, former Finance Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg has called for a “serious introspection” on what he hinted was slow growth.

“India’s GDP in Q1 2019-20 was Rs 33.05 trillion. Q1 2022-2 3 GDP has come at Rs 34.42 trillion. Q1 GDP has grown by Rs 1.09 trillion in three years. Three years growth is 3.3 per cent. Time to celebrate 13.5 per cent year on year growth or to do a serious introspection on why (we) are standing still?” Garg tweeted, just minutes after the GDP was released on Wednesday.

The GDP growth of 13.5 per cent in the June quarter of 2022-23 was the first double digit growth in a year’s time after it had recorded 20.1 per cent growth in June quarter of 2021-22.

However, it was less than State Bank of India’s projection of 15.7 per cent growth rate for April-June quarter of current fiscal, apart from falling short of RBI’s projection of 16.2 per cent for the period under review.

“First-quarter GDP growth came in lower than expected. High net imports and weaker government consumption expenditure kept overall growth soft,” Crisil Ltd’s Chief Economist, Dharmakirti Joshi had said on Wednesday while reacting to the GDP numbers.

Crypto.com accidentally refunds over $7mn to customer

0

Due to an unfortunate typo, cryptocurrency exchange Crypto.com mistakenly issued a customer A$10.5 million ($7.2 million) rather than the expected A$100 ($68), media reports say.

Seven months later, when the exchange finally discovered the error, but till then some of the money had already gone, The Verge reported citing the Australian news outlet 7News as saying.

The initial transfer occurred in May 2021.

However, the exchange only realised the mistake when conducting an audit in December that year, the report said.

Thevamanogari Manivel, the customer in question, reportedly transferred the money to a joint account and spent $890,526 on a lavish, five-bedroom mansion for her sister instead of reporting the inaccurate return to the exchange.

Now the company’s fighting to get its cash back with a lawsuit filed in the Victoria Supreme Court.

The court has also ordered Manivel to sell the home and return the money (with interest) to the exchange.

The case will resume in court this October.

Previous Omicron infections provide protection against new variants: Study

0

Vaccinated people who were infected by the earlier Omicron subvariants have four times greater protection than vaccinated people who were not infected against the new variants like BA.5, finds a new study.

The study indicates that previous infection in vaccinated people (the so-called hybrid immunity) continues to confer immunity for the variants that are known for their ability to evade the immune response.

“Vaccinated people who were infected by Omicron sub variants BA.1 and BA.2 have a protection against infection with subvariant BA.5, in circulation since June, about four times greater than vaccinated people who were not infected at any time,” said lead author Luis Graca from the University of Lisbon.

“Infections in 2020 and 2021 that occurred through infection with earlier variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (ancestral lineage, Alpha and Delta variants) also confer protection against infection for the more recent Omicron variant, although this protection is not as high as that of individuals infected with the BA.1 and BA.2 variants, at the beginning of 2022,” Graca added.

For the study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine journal, the team accessed the registry of Covid-19 cases at Portugal’s national level.

“We used the Portuguese national registry of Covid-19 cases to obtain information on all cases of SARS-CoV-2 infections in the population over 12 years of age residing in Portugal,” the researchers said.

“The virus variant of each infection was determined considering the date of infection and the dominant variant at that time. We considered the infections caused by the first variants of Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 together,” they added.

Celesti Bairagey shoots in water at zero degree, her lips turn blue

‘Rajjo’ actress Celesti Bairagey is putting all her efforts to do justice to her role and recently, she had to shoot for a water sequence in extremely cold conditions – at zero degree celsius – that made her lips turn blue.

She shared: “We were shooting our outdoor sequence in Manali, Kullu and Rohtang pass. I had to run barefoot with a tyre tied around my waist with two baskets of fish attached to it.”

The fictional drama highlights the story of a girl Rajjo (played by Celesti Bairagey), who lost her mother in Uttarakhand flood and is ready to face all the ups and downs in life to become an athlete.

She added: “There were rain sequences where we had to use water from the river which was flowing straight from the glacier and worst case was in Sissu, a small town in the Lahaul valley of Himachal Pradesh where it was zero degrees and snowfall started a few Kilometers away from us. It was drizzling as well and an entire scene had to be shot there, with the storm fan on”.

“My lips started turning blue and everyone had to wait for about an hour before they could continue shooting with Gungun (Uprari) ma’am and me so that we get back into a better situation,” she concluded.

‘Rajjo’ airs on Star Plus.

Asia Cup 2022: Virat Kohli admits to being completely blown away by Suryakumar Yadav’s knock

0

Talismanic India batter Virat Kohli admitted that he was completely blown away by Suryakumar Yadav’s knock of an unbeaten 68 off just 26 balls, crediting him for completely changing the complexion of the game on a pitch which wasn’t as easy to play as he made it look.

Suryakumar shared a 98-run stand off just 42 balls with Virat Kohli, who made 59 in 44 balls, hitting four and three sixes in his 31st T20I fifty and brought out some shots in the end as India fetched 78 runs in the last five overs to score a daunting 192-2 against Hong Kong.

“Sky (Suryakumar) played an outstanding knock, a knock that I enjoyed thoroughly from the other end on a pitch which wasn’t as easy as he made it look, to be honest. It was a brilliant knock to watch from the other end. I’ve seen so many innings from a distance when we play in the IPL (against each other), or that being done to a lot of other teams.”

“But this was my first experience of watching it very closely. I was completely blown away. I honestly believe that the way you played today (on Wednesday), if you can stay in that zone, you can literally change the complexion of the game against any team in the world,” said Kohli in conversation with Suryakumar in a video on bcci.tv.

Suryakumar walked in when India were 94/2 in 13 overs, when KL Rahul was dismissed for 36 off 39 balls and brought out his drives, slashes, scoops and sweeps apart from audacious wrist play, sending the ball all over the park to get his fifty in 22 balls. He remained unbeaten on 68 off 26 balls, hitting six fours and as many sixes, which fetched him 60 runs coming at a strike-rate of 261.53.

“Firstly, I love batting with him (Kohli). When I was sitting inside, me and Rishabh (Pant) were speaking about how we could take game this ahead as the wicket was a little slow. When I went into bat, I tried to just be myself and do what I love doing. It was a really simple plan: taking the first 10 balls, I wanted to hit three-four boundaries in that time and when I got that, I just kept batting.”

“At that moment, I knew I needed you there. That’s why I told you that you just bat from one end, it’ll be easy to cover up because I’ve seen you a lot of times later on, when you take 30-35 balls, the next 10 balls you bat with a strike rate of 200-250. It was important for me that you stay there so that I bat freely until the 20th over. And the same thing happened. I really enjoyed it,” said Suryakumar about his knock.

Kohli had returned to international cricket after a break of a month and half, against Pakistan in what was his 100th T20I match on Sunday. He showed glimpses of his best self while making 35 off 34 balls.

Despite his unbeaten 59 against Hong Kong far from his fluent days, Kohli was able to accelerate at the end after being 15 off 18 balls at the start. He made 41 runs off 30 balls of facing spin, something which has been one of his weaker suits of late.

“My plan was very simple, like in the last game. I’ve come off a decent break, month and a half. Six weeks is a long time, especially at the international level when you get out of touch with the game, but I came mentally fresh. So I really enjoyed my batting in the last game as well, against a quality attack. I kind of got the pace of the wicket, but I knew my job was to stabilise the innings and build a partnership with whoever I play with. And in between when the situation allows me to, take a risk and hit a boundary every now and then.”

“But again, when you (Suryakumar) came in, I told you I’m going to keep going but the moment you started and gave me a clear indication of how you’re feeling, my role immediately changed back to holding one end. As you said, you could go out and express yourself almost every ball. That is something I enjoy doing, staying in there even if I am set, so that even if God forbid you didn’t get those runs, then I could take charge, or we have Rishabh (Pant) or in another game Hardik (Pandya), Dinesh (Karthik) or (Ravindra Jadeja) Jaddu to come in.”

“It was just applying whatever knowledge I have accumulated over the years for the benefit of the team. It was nice to get a couple of games where I felt good with my batting. For me, milestones and number of runs are irrelevant, it’s how you feel when you bat, and I felt very good,” concluded Kohli.

With wins in both their matches against Pakistan and Hong Kong, India became the first team from Group A to qualify for the Super Four stage of 2022 Asia Cup. They now await the winner of final Group A match between Hong Kong and Pakistan on Friday to see who they face off against on Sunday.

SC asks MHA to seek reports from 8 states on plea alleging attacks on Christians

0

The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Union Ministry of of Home Affairs to seek verification reports from Bihar, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh on a plea alleging attacks on the Christian community.

The apex court granted two months to conduct the entire exercise, which includes registration of FIRs, arrests made, status of investigation, and the charge sheets filed.

A bench comprising Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and Hima Kohli said that it “can’t form an opinion on the veracity of allegations made (in the plea) submitted to us”.

The bench added that it would be better to verify the allegations made in the plea.

Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, representing the petitioner, submitted that 700 prayer meetings of Christians were stopped and violence was used against them.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, said the MHA on verification found that many incidents referred to in the plea as communal attacks, were found to be either false or exaggerated.

The Central government has told the Supreme Court there is no merit in the plea alleging increasing attacks on Christians in the country.

It said that such deceptive petitions, creating unrest throughout the country and perhaps for getting assistance from outside the country to meddle with internal affairs of the nation.

The MHA, in a written response, said: “It is submitted that there appears to be some hidden oblique agenda in filing such deceptive petitions, creating unrest throughout the country and perhaps for getting assistance from outside the country to meddle with internal affairs of our nation.”

The Ministry said the petitioner has resorted to falsehood and self-serving documents and also cited press reports, where Christian persecution is either false or wrongfully projected.

The MHA’s response came on a plea alleging rising number of attacks on Christian institutions and priests across the country and seeking the implementation of its guidelines to curb hate crimes.

The petitioners Rev. Peter Machado and others sought implementation of the guidelines issued by the apex court in the 2018 Tehseen Poonawala judgment.

Faf du Plessis, Stephen Fleming revealed as captain, head coach of Johannesburg Super Kings

0

Faf du Plessis on Thursday was named as the captain of Johannesburg Super Kings in the SA20 league, starting in January next year.

The franchise, owned by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited (CSKCL), who also own Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), have also got Stephen Fleming on board as the head coach while revealing the logo of the side.

Du Plessis, the former South Africa captain, had been picked by the franchise as one of its five direct signings alongside Moeen Ali, Maheesh Theekshana (both of them played for CSK in IPL 2022), Romario Shepherd and uncapped fast bowler Gerald Coetzee.

Du Plessis played 100 matches for Chennai Super Kings, first from 2011-15 and then from 2018-2021. “I have an extremely lucky and long relationship with Chennai. When the opportunity presented itself again, I was extremely happy with that. I think it’s going to be (the SA20 league) incredibly crucial for the sustainability of South African cricket. I’ve almost been seeing first hand the difference that league cricket can have an impact on a country’s cricket.”

“Certainly been involved with the IPL for the last 10-11 years. You see the difference that it makes to the young generation and the young players, especially in that Indian cricket team and environment. That knowledge and wisdom and experience that you can share across with your young talent in your own country, I think that’s extremely important for the growth of the national team. The way that they’ve set up the league now looks like it’s going to be one of the big leagues across the globe,” said du Plessis on reuniting with CSK brand in SA20 league as captain of Johannesburg Super Kings.

Du Plessis further paid tribute to influences of various leaders during his time with South Africa and then at the CSK camp under Fleming as well as MS Dhoni. “I’ve been lucky as a player and as a captain to have some really good leaders in my time. Starting under Graeme (Smith), then moving to AB de Villiers, then moving my time across to Chennai Super Kings, where Stephen Fleming was really influential at the beginning of my leadership journey.”

“To be around MS Dhoni, to just watch and observe exactly what he does on and off the field…I’m extremely grateful to have learned from so many great players and leaders in the game. In terms of leadership, MS Dhoni has done the most. He’s the best guy to learn from.”

Fleming has been CSK’s coach since 2009 after playing for them in inaugural IPL 2008 edition. “My last memory of being at the Wanderers was with Chennai (Super Kings), winning the Champions League. I remember it very fondly, it’s a wonderful ground. First thing I remember was the support that we got through South Africa, which was a surprise for all of us.”

“It just shows the passion of the South African cricket fans to follow good cricket and we like to produce that. We’re really hoping we can get good support from Johannesburg and around the country. That’s a big part of what Chennai is about,” said Fleming.

SA20 will be the third time South Africa would be attempting to launch a franchise T20 league in the country. In its previous attempts, the attempt to start Global League T20 failed to happen in 2017.

Its replacement, the Mzansi Super League was held in 2018 and 2019 but didn’t get the big broadcast rights, with the free-to-air South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) getting broadcast rights for a much smaller sum. The league hasn’t been played since 2020 due to Covid-19 pandemic and will now make way for the SA20.

“We have been looking for opportunities for the past few years to get into outside franchise cricket. Cricket South Africa’s league is a very good opportunity. When they launched the league, we were very keen because of the fact that we have always had a good relationship with Cricket South Africa and also the fact that we enjoy a very good support base in South Africa,” said K.S. Viswanathan, CEO of CSKCL.

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith, who is the League Commissioner of SA20, was very excited by the prospect of CSK entering the SA20 bandwagon and du Plessis-Fleming partnership being reunited.

“We are very excited that we have been able to attract the likes of the Super Kings into South Africa. I mean they are an amazing franchise with a huge fanbase and the type of people you know with whom we can build a sustainable future with. So, from our perspective we are very excited and we are looking forward to January (2023) and there is a lot of work that is taking place behind the scenes.”

“Cricket South Africa has made a long-term commitment into this tournament, cleared the ICC window for 10 years now. So, we are very excited about the opportunity that this league is going to bring to our game in South Africa.”

Asia Cup: Rohit Sharma surpasses Virat Kohli, becomes India’s second most successful T20I captain

0

Rohit Sharma has surpassed Virat Kohli as India’s second most successful captain in the T20I format after registering a comprehensive 40-run win against Hong Kong in the Asia cup here on Wednesday.

Sharma, who had taken up T20I captaincy after Kohli stepped down, has won 31 matches in the 37 outing while Kohli achieved 30 wins in 50 T20I matches.

Former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has helped India win 41 T20I matches under his captaincy from 72 matches, is still on top of the list.

On Wednesday, Suryakumar Yadav’s fireworks in the last seven overs sealed India’s Super Four spot in Asia Cup 2022 with a 40-run win over Hong Kong in a Group A match.

At 94/2 in 13 overs, when KL Rahul’s struggle ended at 36 off 39 balls, Suryakumar walked in and completely changed the complexion of India’s innings. With his drives, slashes, scoops and sweeps apart from audacious wrist play sending the ball all over the park, he remained unbeaten on 68 off 26 balls, hitting six fours and as many sixes. 60 of his 68 runs came off boundaries, scored at a strike-rate of 261.53.

His belligerent stroke-play made other batters in the Indian side look as if they were batting on a very different pitch. While Suryakumar hit 12 boundaries in his 26-ball knock, all other Indian batters managed to hit nine boundaries collectively in 96 balls.

Suryakumar also shared a 98-run stand off just 42 balls with Virat Kohli, who made 59 in 44 balls, hitting four and three sixes in his 31st T20I fifty and brought out some shots in the end as India fetched 78 runs in the last five overs to score a daunting 192-2, something which was a far possibility at the half-way mark score of 70-1.

Asked to review the match, Rohit was pleased with the batting show, especially in the back end of the innings. But he felt that bowling could have been better.

Spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja conceded just 48 runs overall to make up for the 97 runs leaked collectively by young pacers Avesh Khan and Arshdeep Singh to reduce Hong Kong to 152-5 in their 20 overs.

“We batted pretty well to start with, got to a very good score. Came out and bowled reasonably well, we could have done slightly better with the ball.”
