Just tried to hang on for as long as I could, says Maxwell after playing a match-winning knock

0

Glenn Maxwell, the architect of Australia’s two-wicket win in the rain-affected opening One-day International against Sri Lanka here late on Tuesday said he was just trying to hang on for as long as he could, given the mammoth 300-run target set by the hosts, adding the key to his unbeaten 80 on the day was taking calculated risks.

Sri Lanka scored 300/7 on a battery-friendly pitch in the opening ODI of the five-match series before the tourists overhauled the revised target of 282 runs in 42.3 overs.

“I was just trying to stay out there as long as I could. I knew I was going to get balls to score off in my areas at some stage, and I was just trying to take risks at the right time,” Maxwell said, summing up the morale-boosting win.

“I think when there were only three overs left, I think that was a good opportunity to try and get the run rate down under six, and then (I) try and do it in the next over without letting it get to the last over, because all sorts of chaos could happen in the last,” added the all-rounder.

Sri Lanka looked ahead for much of the ODI but Maxwell finished with 80 not out off 51 deliveries, hitting a total of 12 boundaries, to steer his side to a comfortable win (DLS) with nine balls to spare.

Wanindu Hasaranga looked to be impacted by his persistent leg trouble, though the star all-rounder continued to show his world-class talent once again, smashing 37 off 19 balls, embellished with six boundaries to guide the hosts to 300.

As the hosts looked poised to post a score around the 280 mark, the right-hander struck five consecutive boundaries off Jhye Richardson, manipulating the field with smart footwork and a mix of touch and power. He returned to trouble the Aussies with the ball. He returned superb figures of 4/58 from nine overs and dismissed Aaron Finch and Marcus Stoinis, as well as Alex Carey and Pat Cummins in the same over.

Despite his exploits, Hasaranga could not land the killer blow on Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate Maxwell. The leg-spinner’s final delivery beat the bat, though Maxwell scurried through for a bye to retain the strike, and then went on to plunder 15 off the next over.

Young Dunith Wellalage also tasted success on debut, taking two Australian wickets. After bursting onto the scene at the ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup, Wellalage earned a first senior international call-up and he didn’t disappoint on Tuesday night.

The left-arm orthodox spinner claimed Steve Smith as his first scalp, forcing an error from one of the world’s best as his delivery skidded underneath the Australian’s bat. He was then entrusted with a death-over role and claimed Ashton Agar with a plumb lbw decision that looked to turn the tide.

Despite the debutant’s best efforts, Wellalage was outfoxed by Maxwell, with a reverse sweep and a swat to the leg-side for consecutive boundaries bringing the required rate down from eight to six.

Finishing with 2/49 from seven overs, Wellalage will be all the richer for the experience though, and captain Dasun Shanaka predicts the all-rounder will feature a lot more for the senior team.

“He’s is a very good cricketer. I have seen him performing through the under-19 level, so I think he’ll deliver in the future for us.”

Brief scores: Sri Lanka 300/7 in 50 overs (Danushka Gunathilaka 55, Pathum Nissanka 56, Kusal Mendis 86 not out) lost to Australia 282/8 in 42.3 overs (Aaron Finch 44, Steven Smith 53, Marcus Stoinis 44, Glenn Maxwell 80 not out; Wanindu Hasaranga 4/58) by two wickets (DLS).

Injured New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson flies home from England

0

Tall New Zealand pace bowler Kyle Jamieson will return home after an MRI scan revealed a stress reaction to his lower left back during the second Test at Trent Bridge, which England won by five wickets to take an unassailable lead in the series.

The 27-year-old sustained the injury while bowling on day three of the Test and coach Gary Stead expected he would require four to six weeks of rest before beginning a rehabilitation program targeting a potential return to play in September or October.

Pace bowler Blair Tickner, who was with the Test side in England for the early tour games, has been called into the squad as Jamieson’s replacement and will arrive in the UK prior to the third Test at Leeds next week.

Tickner’s domestic teammate Dane Cleaver has received his maiden Test call-up as a replacement for wicket-keeper Cam Fletcher who has also been ruled out of the tour with a grade-two right-hamstring strain.

Fletcher sustained the injury while fielding on day four of the second Test and will require six to eight weeks to recover.

Cleaver was called up by New Zealand for the first time as part of the T20 side to face the Netherlands in March. However, the one-off match was abandoned due to the weather.

Stead expressed his sympathy for Jamieson and Fletcher and thanked them for their efforts.

“It’s always sad to see players forced to leave a tour early with an injury,” Stead said.

“Kyle had played such a big role in the first Test at Lord’s and I know how disappointed he was to have had his involvement in the second Test curtailed. He’s obviously a huge asset for us and we’ll be making sure we are patient with his recovery to ensure he returns fully fit with plenty more important cricket still to come later this year.

“It’s exciting for Blair and Dane to be joining us for the final Test at Headingley next week. Blair was with us for the first part of the tour and his skills will be a valuable asset to the squad. It will be Dane’s first experience with the Test side and I know he can’t wait to get here and soak it up.”

New Zealand will have a couple of days off before regrouping in Leeds ahead of the third Test at Headingley starting on June 23.

Paavo Nurmi Games: Neeraj Chopra sets new national record, bags silver medal

0

Tokyo Olympics champion Neeraj Chopra made an impressive return to competitive action as he broke his own national record to win the men’s javelin throw silver medal at the 2022 Paavo Nurmi Games, here.

The 24-year-old Chopra on Tuesday registered a best throw of 89.30m, a new personal best and national record, to finish behind Finland’s Oliver Helander, who won gold with a personal best throw of 89.83m.

Reigning world champion and 2022 season’s world leader Anderson Peters of Grenada claimed the bronze with 86.60m. The meet in Finland was Neeraj’s first competition since winning the historic gold medal at Tokyo 2020 in August last year.

“Very nice competition and I am very happy about my personal best and national record. Oliver (Helander) had very good technique today. I tried maybe too much because that was my first competition of this season. I will compete next in Kuortane after four days,” Chopra said.

The 24-year-old Indian made a statement of intent with his opening throw, measuring an impressive 86.92m. He then recorded 89.30m in his second attempt, bettering his own previous personal best and national record of 88.07m, set at the Indian Grand Prix 3 in March last year.

However, the Indian failed to log a legitimate attempt in his next three throws before registering 85.85 with his final attempt. His second throw, however, was enough for a silver medal finish, an olympics.com report said.

London 2012 Olympic gold medallist Keshorn Walcott from Trinidad and Tobago finished fourth in the 10-man field with 84.02m, while Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic came in sixth with 83.91m.

After Turku, Neeraj is scheduled to stay in Finland to compete at the Kuortane Games before heading to Sweden for the Stockholm leg of the Diamond League.

2nd Test, Day 5: Bairstow’s incredible ton leads England to thrilling 5-wicket win over New Zealand

0

An incredible hundred from Jonny Bairstow (136) led England to a sensational five-wicket win over New Zealand on Day 5 of the second Test and helped them take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, here on Tuesday.

Chasing a target of 298 runs for victory, England needed 160 in the final session and Jonny Bairstow along with Ben Stokes played sensational counter-attacking innings to take England home in the second Test with plenty of time to spare.

The win takes England’s point percentage to 25 in the World Test Championship table as they continue to distance themselves from the bottom place. Defending champions New Zealand, meanwhile, point percentage slips to 29.17 and is just a spot above England.

Earlier in the day, England had to work hard to pick up the last three wickets of New Zealand’s innings after Daryl Mitchell and co showed great resistance. The hosts’ approach from the get-go in their chase was to go for the win and although there was a small blip in the middle, they counter-attacked brilliantly to script an improbable win.

Starting with an overnight lead of 238 runs and with three wickets left in the bank, the task ahead was clear as daylight for the visitors — add as many runs to the score as possible. And they managed to achieve just that with Daryl Mitchell being the rock and the tail batting around him.

He first put on a crucial 32-run stand with Matt Henry, who chipped in with a handy 18 before being sent back by Stuart Broad. Kyle Jamieson could not trouble the scorers much, getting out for 1 after being done by a short delivery from Broad.

An entertaining partnership between Mitchell and Boult then ensued, with the latter playing some audacious strokes. Boult was finally dismissed after an enterprising knock of 17 by James Anderson while Mitchell remained unbeaten on 62, continuing his dream tour. The visitors managed to add 60 runs, setting England a target of 299.

With the tail delivering, the spotlight was now on New Zealand’s pace attack to deliver the breakthroughs in order to bowl England out. And they did exactly that.

Zak Crawley’s struggles continued as he was nabbed for a duck by Trent Boult. Alex Lees and Ollie Pope then ensured that England did not lose any further wickets heading into lunch. The pacers, though, were much more successful in the second session, striking relatively quickly after the break.

Henry induced an edge off Pope’s bat with a cracker of a delivery to send him back for 18. The massive wicket of the in-form Joe Root followed, with Boult taking a caught and bowled to send him packing for 3. Bowling round the wicket, Southee who was struggling for rhythm, got the well-set Alex Lees for 44, with a ball that held its length.

Stokes and Bairstow now had a massive task at hand to ensure that the floodgates did not open. And the pair batted assuredly for the remainder of the session, with England still 160 runs away from the target. Both Bairstow and Stokes came out all guns blazing after the Tea break. The New Zealand bowlers had no answer to the blitzkrieg that came from the bat of the duo, particularly Bairstow.

He got to a run-a-ball fifty in the first over of the final session and teed off from there. The next three overs saw five maximums coming from the bat of Bairstow as he single-handedly snatched the game that was potentially heading towards a draw. A total of 68 runs came off the first five overs and within no time, he was heading towards triple figures.

Despite Stokes suffering a blow to his knee, he hobbled around to keep Bairstow company. He was very close to breaking the record of Gilbert Jessop to become the fastest Test centurion for England but missed it by a ball, bringing up his ton in 77 balls.

The carnage continued even after he got to his milestone as he picked Bracewell apart for two sixes and a four. Stokes wasn’t one to be left behind as he smashed his way to a fifty off just 55 balls, an ICC report said.

Bairstow eventually fell to Boult after plundering him for consecutive boundaries but had sealed the game for England with a 92-ball 136. Ben Foakes joined his captain in the middle and as he has done often in the series so far, played a handy knock to settle any nerves.

Ben Stokes finished the game off in style with a boundary — almost a carbon copy of his shot at Headingley in 2019 against Australia – as England romped home by five wickets to seal the series 2-0.

Brief scores: New Zealand 553 (Daryl Mitchell 190, Tom Blundell 106; James Anderson 3-62) & 284 (Daryl Mitchell 62 not out, Will Young 56; Stuart Broad 3-70) lost to England 539 (Joe Root 176, Ollie Pope 145; Trent Boult 5-106 ) & 299/5 (Jonny Bairstow 136, Ben Stokes 75 not out; Trent Boult 3-94) by 5 wickets.

‘Joker 2’: Lady Gaga in early negotiations to play Harley Quinn

0

The Joaquin Phoenix-starrer Joker 2′ – a sequel to the runaway 2019 hit film — will be a musical for which singer Lady Gaga is in early talks.

She will be seen portraying Harley Quinn – Joker’s love interest and partner in madness, in the film, reports Variety’.

Speculation that Harley Quinn would appear in the movie first bubbled to the surface after Phillips posted the cover of the screenplay to Instagram on June 7.

‘Variety’ states that the subtitle for the film, ‘Folie A Deux’, refers to a shared delusional disorder, and Joker’s only real companion — other than Batman, anyway — has been Quinn, a character first created for ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ in the early 1990s.

Making ‘Joker 2’ a musical is another bold stroke by director Todd Phillips, who struck gold — at the box office (with $1 billion in worldwide grosses) and the Oscars (with 12 nominations and two wins) — when he reframed the Dark Knight’s number one villain as a loner anti-hero. Joaquin Phoenix won the best actor for his performance as Joker, aka Arthur Fleck; he’s also expected to reprise his performance, though his deal is not settled yet.

According to ‘Variety’, all other details about ‘Folie A Deux’ remain under wraps, so it’s unclear whether Gaga would also contribute any music to the project, but it’s a safe bet that it’s at least on the table.

Gaga worked with Phillips in his capacity as one of the producers of 2018’s ‘A Star Is Born’, which earned Gaga an Oscar nomination for best actress a” and an Oscar win for original song. That movie’s star and director, Bradley Cooper, was also a producer on a joker, but it’s unclear what level of involvement he has on ‘Folie A Deux’.

Megastar Chiranjeevi was thrilled by the recently released film ‘Major’, starring Adivi Sesh.

Chiranjeevi honored the ‘Major’ team by hosting a lunch for them. During their get-together, the ‘Acharya’ actor spoke with the Major team for hours.

Chiranjeevi posted a few photos from the gathering on his Twitter account, writing: “Major is not a film. It’s truly an Emotion Story of a great Hero & Martyr Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan told in the most poignant way. A must-watch… Proud of Mahesh Babu for backing such a purposeful film. Hearty Congrats to Adivi Sesh, Saiee Manjrekar, Sobhita, and Sashi Kiran Tikka and Team.”

Sharing a picture of Chiranjeevi and himself on Instagram, Adivi Sesh wrote, “Today feels like my highest honor, Sir! Chiranjeevi Konidela. You spoke to us for hours. Fed us an amazing lunch. And explained what you loved about the film. Such attention to detail, such insightful questions. I always loved Megastar the hero. Today, I witnessed your heart of gold.”

‘Major’ directed by Sashi Kiran Tikka is based on the real-life incidents of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who attained martyrdom during India’s darkest terror attack 26/11.
