Kartik Aaryan’s short film ‘Silvat’ to premiere on June 12

0

The short film ‘Silvat’ starring Kartik Aaryan is all set to release on the Zindagi channel on June 12.

Set in the late ’90s, the film tells the story of Noor and Anwar who share a passionate love for each other but are bound by societal norms and fidelity. A saga of forbidden love, it perfectly encapsulates the misery incomplete love brings with it.

Starring Kartik Aaryan and Meher Mistry as Anwar and Noor, the film features one of Aaryan’s most laudable performances.

Talking about the film, Kartik Aaryan said,” ‘Silvat’ is a very very special film and it will always be extremely close to my heart. Anwar’s character is unlike all the other characters that I have played in my career so far. This is a film that I shot 6 years back and I cannot believe it’s being showcased again.

“It feels really overwhelming and validating as an actor to see your old work getting that kind of appreciation, so many years down the lane too. The film perfectly depicts the emotional turmoil that the characters go through.

“From the script, dialogue to the music, each element plays a vital role in bringing the film together and that’s what is so beautiful about it,” he further added.

This social drama is directed by noted filmmaker Tanuja Chandra, who is known for creating female-centric films including movies like ‘Qarib Qarib Single’ and ‘Dushman’.

Talking about the film’s journey, director Tanuja said, “I am thrilled that a film that is such a special one for me, is finally going to be seen by audiences on their television screens at home. This is the reason we tell stories – to share them with people, and a love story that’s filled with intensity and emotions is something that invariably speaks to peoples’ own, personal experiences.”

The film has been written by Faraz Ansari, who is known to tell stories on social issues like LGBTQ rights through his movies and has been acknowledged for his films Sheer Qorma’, ‘Sisak’, ‘And Stanley Ka Dabba’.

‘Silvat’ will be available on Zindagi’s value-added service DTH platforms Tata Play, and 117 on Dish TV and D2H service.

Maj Sandeep’s mom wore same saree for ‘Major’ screening that she wore for his graduation 23 yrs ago

0

While Adivi Sesh is overwhelmed with the praise coming his way for his performance in ‘Major’, the most special words were those from Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s parents who watched the film in Bangalore with Adivi.

In a touching gesture, Maj Sandeep’s mother Dhanalakshmi Unnikrishnan also wore the same saree at the screening that she had worn 23 years ago during her son’s pipping ceremony when he joined the Indian Army. She also wore the watch he gifted her.

It was an emotional and surreal moment for Adivi to relive these special moments with the late Major’s family, as they watched a tribute to him on the big screen.

Narrating this emotional moment, Adivi says, “Two days before the release, we did the premiere in Bangalore. Amma (late Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s mother) called me and said, “23 years ago, I wore this saree for Major Sandeep’s graduation. Today, I’m wearing this saree for you.

“She showed me the watch he gave her and she came to watch the film. I kid you not, the moment I saw her I hugged her for four minutes and I held their hands while watching the film. It was a surreal feeling, parents watching a film inspired by their son who is no longer there. After the film they gave me a kiss, I held their hands and sat on the floor and at that moment, I knew we won.”

Adivi has been flooded with rave reviews for his sensitive and moving portrayal of the late Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who will forever remain in our memory for his bravery and sacrifice in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008.

Babar Azam’s century, and Khushdil’s cameo help Pakistan beat West Indies by five wickets

0

Skipper Babar Azam (103) struck a fine century while Imam-ul-Haq (65) and Mohammad Rizwan (59) scored the fifties to help Pakistan overcome West Indies by five wickets in the first One-day International at the Multan Cricket Stadium here.

Azam was at his brilliant best while Imam-ul-Haq gave him good company as they raised 103 runs for the second wicket. He then added 108 runs for the third wicket with Rizwan before Khushdil Shah (41 not out off 23 balls) sealed victory with a late cameo as Pakistan did enough to sneak past Shai Hope and the West Indies.

Hope scored 127 to help West Indies reach 305/8 in 50 overs but with Babar and his boys standing tall, Pakistan reached 306.5 in 42.9 overs to win the first match of the series.

Babar Azam continued to make a mockery of opposition bowlers and the Pakistan captain was at it again on Wednesday night as he helped himself to yet another ODI century.

It was Babar’s third century on the trot and it also meant he becomes the first player in the history of ODI cricket to score three consecutive centuries on two separate occasions, said a report on the ICC’s official website.

Babar’s innings also saw him become the quickest player to notch 17 ODI centuries and the fastest to complete 1,000 ODI runs as captain. His 103 came off 107 balls and was studded with nine fours.

The 27-year-old who is seemingly still on the improve has recently targeted becoming the first player to be ranked No.1 in all three formats of the game.

Babar wasn’t the only player to reach three figures in Multan, with West Indies opener Shai Hope scoring his 12th ODI century with a stylish 127 that helped the Caribbean side post a highly competitive score of 305/8.

While Hope’s innings is unlikely to receive the same amount of plaudits as Babar’s, it was a knock of a similar class and really laid the platform for West Indies’ big total.

Hope smashed 15 fours and one massive six during his 134-delivery stay, with his 154-run stand with No.3 Shamarh Brooks a particular highlight.

It looked like Pakistan’s run chase was going to prove futile when Babar and Mohammad Rizwan were dismissed in quick succession, but finisher Khushdil Shah had other ideas.

The left-hander smashed four sixes and scored an unbeaten 41 during the closing stages of the chase to ensure Pakistan drew first blood in the three-match series.

It was only Khushdil’s fifth ODI, but he is making a name for himself as a reliable closer after he performed a similar role with aplomb against Australia in March.

Brief scores: West Indies 305/8 in 50 overs (Shai Hope 127, Shamarh Brooks 70, Rovman Powell 32; Haris Rauf 4/77, Shaheen Shah Afridi 2/55) lost to Pakistan 306/5 in 49.2 overs (Babar Azam 103, Imam-ul-Haq 65, Mohammad Rizwan 59, Khushdil Shah 41 not out; Alzarri Joseph 2/55) by 5 wickets.

2nd T20I: Australia beat Sri Lanka by 3 wickets, takes unassailable 2-0 series lead

0

Australia survived an electric spell from leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga (4/33) to beat Sri Lanka by three wickets in the second three wickets and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series at R Premadasa Stadium, here on Wednesday.

Veteran wicketkeeper Matthew Wade (26 not out) handled the immense pressure of batting with the tail to secure victory with 13 balls to spare.

Chasing a low total of 125 runs for a win, openers Aaron Finch and David Warner came out intent on powering Australia to victory as quickly as possible. However, Hasaranga weaved some spin magic to turn the tables.

The leg-spinner first took out Finch for a 13-ball 24 when the Aussie skipper hit Danushka Gunathilaka at cover-point and a flighted googly in his next over befuddled Mitchell Marsh, who committed far too early for his sweep and was trapped plumb leg before.

Nuwan Thushara then got one skiddy delivery to hit Steve Smith on the front pad to leave Australia on 58 for 3. Sri Lanka had another spring to their step as David Warner fell to a runout caused by a round of yes-no calls with Glenn Maxwell. Marcus Stoinis threatened to deflate Sri Lanka’s hopes quickly when he took on Hasaranga in the eighth over, but Chameera returned in the ninth over to dismiss his LSG teammate.

Sri Lanka was still hamstrung by the lack of runs on the board but a double-wicket over from Hasaranga in the 12th put them marginally ahead and Australia well under pressure. He first got rid of Maxwell, who chipped a googly to mid-off and then followed Ashton Agar as a leg spinner breached the big bat-pad gateway to knock back the stumps on the next delivery.

Australia was 99 for 7, the required 25 runs now seeming a bit distant. But Wade was able to steady the innings as he received solid support from fast bowler Jhye Richardson. The comfortable required equation meant Wade and Richardson had no reason to hurry or make a forceful attempt at picking the runs and Australia eventually coasted past the finish line in 17.5 overs.

Earlier, Australia won the toss and opted to bowl. With star pacer Mitchell Starc sidelined for the match after suffering a finger injury, Maxwell was given the new ball and struck in the first over.

The Lions stumbled to 7-2 before Charith Asalanka (39) and Kusal Mendis (36) batted together for 9.1 overs, amassing 66 runs for the third wicket to lay a solid platform for Sri Lanka to post a defendable total. But Maxwell ended the partnership in the 12th over with Asalanka skying a ball to Finch.

Mendis’ knock ended in bizarre fashion, departing after falling back into his stumps after being hit in the helmet by a delivery from Jhye Richardson, who came into the team in place of Starc.

Then began the lower-order collapse as Sri Lanka lost five wickets for just 20 runs. Kane Richardson (4/30) and Jhye Richardson (3/26) ran through the line-up at the death as Sri Lanka could only muster 25 runs in the last five overs.

Saturday’s final match in Kandy will be a dead rubber ahead of a five-match ODI series, starting on June 14.

Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 124/9 in 20 overs (Charith Asalanka 39, Kusal Mendis 36; Kane Richardson 4/30, Jhye Richardson 3/26) lost to Australia 126/7 in 17.5 overs (Matthew Wade 26, Aaron Finch 24; Wanindu Hasaranga 4/33) by 3 wickets

Indian women’s cricket legend Mithali Raj calls it a day

0

India’s greatest woman batter, Mithali Raj, capped her illustrious 23-year-long professional career by announcing retirement from international cricket on Wednesday, stating that the journey had been “most fulfilling”.

Mithali, who arrived on the international scene smashing 114 on debut at the age of 16, soon established herself as the mainstay of India’s batting. She went on to lead the side for the most part of her illustrious career that also saw her captain the national side to two 50-over World Cup finals — the only one to do so in India, male or female.

Mithali, 39, announced her retirement on social media, posting a letter on Twitter, which traced her more than the two-decade-long journey.

“I set out as a little girl on the journey to wear the India blues, as representing your country is the highest honor. The journey was full of highs and some lows. Each event taught me something unique and the last 23 years have been the most fulfilling, challenging, and enjoyable years of my life,” wrote Mithali, the highest run-getter in ODI cricket, having scored 7,805 runs in 232 games at an average of 50.68.

Mithali’s consistency was legendary as she ended up scoring seven ODI centuries, and a mind-boggling 64 half-tons in a career that had just seven ducks.

Legendary England cricketer Charlotte Edwards came a distant second to Mithali, with her nearly two-decade-long career fetching her 5,992 runs from 191 games at an average of 38.16.

Mithali did not let age come in the way as she continued to strive for the World Cup, but unfortunately, her last campaign — in New Zealand this year — ended in India’s premature exit. There was speculation that Mithali would announce her retirement on return from New Zealand, but she preferred to delay it and finally called it quits on the eve of the big-ticket men’s T20I series between the KL Rahul-led India and South Africa.

“Like all journeys, this one too must come to an end. Today is the day I retire from all forms of international cricket. Each time I stepped on the field, I gave my very best with the intent to help India win. I will always cherish the opportunity given to me to represent the tricolor,” she said.

Mithali also scored 2,364 runs in 89 T20Is, as well as 699 runs in 12 Tests, including a century and four half-centuries. She also finishes as the No.7-ranked batter in the ICC Women’s ODI Player Rankings.

“I feel now is the perfect time to call curtains on my playing career as the team is in the capable hands of some very talented young players and the future of Indian cricket is bright,” she said.

“I’d like to thank the BCCI and Shri Jay Shah Sir (Honorary Secretary, BCCI} for all the support I have received — first as a player and then as the captain of the Indian women’s cricket team,” added Mithali in her letter.

It was during the 2017 ODI World Cup that Mithali surpassed Edwards to become the highest run-scorer in ODIs and the first woman cricketer to score 6,000 runs in the format.

Mithali hinted that she would perhaps be open to coaching assignments or whatever role the Indian cricket board deemed suitable for a player of her caliber.

“It was an honor to have led the team for so many years. It definitely shaped me as a person and hopefully helped shape Indian women’s cricket as well. This journey may have ended but another one beckons as I’d love to stay involved in the game I love and contribute to the growth of women’s Cricket in India and the world over.

“Special mention to all my fans, thank you for all your love and support,” she said.

Hardik Pandya will provide a wealth of options to the team, says Irfan Pathan

0

Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan feels that all-rounder Hardik Pandya will provide the team management with a wealth of options against South Africa.

A fully fit Pandya makes his return to the squad in a five-match T20I series against South Africa. The talented all-rounder enjoyed an excellent IPL season with the bat, scoring 487 runs in 15 matches. His spell of 3/17 in the IPL final was a match-winning performance.

“Hardik Pandya is very valuable and he is capable of finishing the game. He can do that, batting from the top as well. So, the management is quite aware of this, and having him in the team, they don’t just have one or two but three finishers in the team. The way Hardik Pandya bats, he is capable of scoring sixes anytime and has started playing along the ground too, which is why this season in the IPL, he has been great. Getting back to batting, the Indian team, having three finishers, has filled up the gaps, and having him back in the team excites me a lot,” Pathan said on Star Sports’ show Follow The Blues.

The Indian team also boasts of two emerging bowlers, Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik, both who have been exceptional for their IPL franchises this year. The former has been one of Punjab Kings’ leading pacers, specially picking wickets at regular intervals in the death overs.

In 36 IPL matches, Arshdeep has picked up 40 wickets at an economy rate of 8.42 with one five-wicket haul to his name. Jammu and Kashmir’s Umran has breathed fire, clocking 150 kmph consistently.

“Absolutely thrilled to see these two guys getting the India call-up. Arshdeep Singh has been bowling well for a long time now. A left-arm bowler does give you a different angle, but the way he has bowled in the death is what has impressed me the most,” he said.

“Umran Malik – Wow – you know, he’s bowled consistently at 150km. I’m really impressed with him. The whole world is excited, not just India because there aren’t many who can bowl consistently 150km in the world. In that way, he has got potential. Obviously, he is inexperienced as far his first-class cricket is concerned. But I think this team management, Rahul Dravid, and all the coaches will back him,” he added.

Microsoft HoloLens chief to resign after misconduct allegations

0

Microsoft HoloLens chief Alex Kipman is reportedly leaving the company in the mixed reality reorganization following allegations of misconduct.

According to geekwire.com, the tech giant is splitting its HoloLens mixed reality group and parting ways with Kipman.

The restructuring was announced in an internal email on Tuesday evening, shifting the company’s Mixed Reality Hardware group into the Windows and Devices organization, and its Mixed Reality Presence and Collaboration group into the Microsoft Teams organization in the company’s Experiences and Devices division.

Scott Guthrie, the head of Microsoft’s Cloud and AI Group, said in the email that the changes “will align and further accelerate our overall Metaverse efforts as a company this coming fiscal year”, the report said.

“Over the last several months, Alex Kipman and I have been talking about the team’s path going forward. We have mutually decided that this is the right time for him to leave the company to pursue other opportunities,” Guthrie wrote toward the end of the email.

“I appreciate the tremendous vision Alex has provided to Microsoft over the years, and all that he has done to advance our Metaverse offerings. Alex is committed to helping the teams with the transition process over the next two months and ensuring success before pursuing what is next for him,” he added.

A recent Insider story described a pattern of alleged inappropriate behavior by Kipman toward women at the company, including unwanted touching, as an example of misconduct by Microsoft managers, saying he got away with it despite pledges by CEO Satya Nadella and other top executives to institute cultural changes.
