Apple s iOS 16 to offer revamped lock screen with widgets, more

0

New Delhi, June 1 The upcoming Apple iOS 16 update is likely to come with features like a revamped lock screen with widgets and updated Messages and Health apps.

The new software update will help app developers who support widgets, as it will give them an opportunity to woo users’ attention in a high-profile area on iPhone, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

This time, Apple will give particular attention to its lock screen and support wallpapers that have widget-like capabilities.

The tech giant may be considering merging the left of the home screen — the “Today View” with its lineup of widgets — directly into the lock screen itself.

The updated lock screen could come with an always-on display, similar to Apple Watch.

Other features with iOS 16 include an updated Messages app with more “social networking-like functionality” and the Health app will also be updated.

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference 9WWDC) will kick off on June 6 for more than 30 million Apple developers around the globe.

WWDC22 helps developers and designers explore the latest technologies, tools, and frameworks coming to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS.

Throughout the week, developers will be able to connect directly with Apple engineers and designers through labs and Digital Lounges for guidance on building innovative and platform-differentiating apps and games.

Andhra Horror: Techie kills wife, body fished out of the lake after 5 months

0

Tirupati, May 31 A techie brutally murdered his wife, stuffed her body in a suitcase, and dumped it in a lake in the temple city of Tirupati.

The chilling facts came to light on Tuesday, nearly five months after he committed the crime.

Police recovered the body of Padma from the lake in Venkatapuram on the outskirts of the town.

Police said they have arrested Venugopal, a software engineer currently employed with a firm in Hyderabad.

The techie had been misleading his in-laws that the Padma is with him in Hyderabad. As she did not even speak to them over the phone for nearly five months, Padma’s parents grew suspicious and lodged a missing complaint with the police.

During the interrogation, Venugopal confessed to killing the Padma on January 5, the same day he brought her home from her parents’ house, where she was living for two years due to a marital dispute.

Venugopal, who had even filed a divorce petition in the court, told Padma’s parents that he wants to take her home and forget whatever happened in the past.

He later informed them that he took her to Hyderabad where they are living together.

Padma’s parents believed him as they thought Venugopal is a reformed man. Whenever they called him and wanted to speak to the Padma, he used to make some excuse. They started suspecting him and finally lodged a complaint with the police two days ago.

A police officer said Venugopal married the Padma in April 2019. After the marriage, they were living in Chennai where he was working with an IT company. A few months after the marriage, differences cropped up between their post and she returned to her parent’s home.

Both sides have filed court cases against each other. Venugopal had filed a case for divorce while the Padma had approached the Women’s Commission.

Police investigations revealed that after bringing the Padma to his house on January 5, Venugopal thrashed her with a stick, resulting in her death.

The incident happened in the presence of Venugopal’s parents and a friend. They later tied the body and stuffed it into a large suitcase.

Venugopal then carried the suitcase to the lake, dumped it there, and left Tirupati with his parents.

Padma’s relatives alleged that Venugopal had been harassing her from day one for more dowry. They demanded the death penalty for Venugopal.

In a similar case in Tirupati last year, a man had killed his 27-year-old techie wife, stuffed the body in a suitcase, and had set it afire after dumping it in a remote place.

Srikanth Reddy had tried to fool the relatives by saying his wife died of Covid-19 and the hospital authorities cremated the body.

Bhuvaneswari was working as a software engineer in a company in Hyderabad. The shocking crime came to light after police found a charred body and took up an investigation.

Democrats attacking me and sidelining Tesla, SpaceX: Musk

0

San Francisco, May 31 Elon Musk on Tuesday once again criticized US President Joe Biden, saying that he will vote for the Republican Party in midterm elections in November as Democrats are attacking him and his companies from all sides.

Earlier this month, he publicly revealed for the first time on Twitter that he will now vote for Republicans, as conservatives returned to the micro-blogging platform after his $44 billion takeovers.

“I support free speech, but not anyone candidate. In fact, I gave money to & voted for Hillary & then voted for Biden. However, given unprovoked attacks by leading Democrats against me & a very cold shoulder to Tesla & SpaceX, I intend to vote Republican in November,” Musk said in their latest tweet.

Musk has said that the political attacks on him will escalate dramatically in the coming months.

“I’m just talking about the midterm elections in November. Not sure that there is a third-party candidate. It’s rather hard to support a party when prominent members of that party keep attacking me and sidelining Tesla & SpaceX!,” Musk added.

Biden for the first time publicly acknowledged Musk-run Tesla’s contribution to the world of electric vehicles (EVs) in February this year, saying that the country is building a reliable national public charging network to counter the Chinese challenges in the EV market.

Biden’s acknowledgment came after Tesla CEO Musk repeatedly complained on Twitter about being ignored by his administration.

“From iconic companies like GM and Ford building out new electric vehicle production to Tesla, our nation’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer, to innovative younger companies, manufacturing is coming back to America after decades,” the US president said.

In January, Musk said that Biden “is treating the American public like fools” after Biden met with executives from rival car companies General Motors and Ford Motor.

Musk also tweeted that “Biden is a damp (sock) puppet in human form” and “Starts with a T, Ends with an A, ESL in the middle.”

Accounts of conservatives have seen a sudden influx in the number of followers, while liberals have lost out on followers after news broke that the tech billionaire bought Twitter in a $44 billion deal, which he has put on hold over the presence of fake accounts.

Apple may not announce its mixed reality headset at WWDC this year

0

San Francisco, May 31 As tech enthusiasts across the globe are waiting to witness Apple’s mixed reality headset or its new AR/VR operating system in real, a new report on Tuesday claimed that the tech giant is unlikely to announce it during the Worldwide Developers’ Conference (WWDC), which is scheduled to kick off from June 6.

In a series of tweets, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned that he expects the tech giant’s headset to launch in 2023.

“It still takes some time before the Apple AR/MR headset enters mass production, so I do not think Apple will release the AR/MR headset and rumoured realityOS at WWDC this year. Apple’s competitors worldwide cannot wait to see the hardware spec and OS design for Apple’s AR/MR headset,” Kuo wrote on the micro-blogging platform.

“I am sure that if Apple announces AR/MR headset and its OS at WWDC, competitors will immediately kick off copycat projects and happily copy Apple’s excellent ideas, and hit the store shelves before Apple launches in 2023,” Kuo added.

A recent report said that the realityOS has appeared in a trademark filing, “which has not been officially filed by Apple but it is common practice for large companies to apply for trademarks under a one-off company”.

The realityOS-powered headsets will be able to offer a combination of AR/VR experiences, immersing users in virtual content as well as layering virtual elements over real-world environments.

Earlier this month, the company’s board of directors reportedly tried out the wearable device which is common practice ahead of a public launch.

The AR headset is expected to sport a sleek design so that it is lightweight and comfortable for the wearer to roam around for prolonged periods.

Hockey Rankings: India women achieve best-ever sixth place; men slip one spot to fourth

0

Mumbai, May 31 The Indian women’s hockey team has moved up one place in the FIH Rankings to sixth — the best-ever placing the team has achieved in the history of the rankings.

The team, which had jumped two places at the start of May following its superb performance against the top-ranked Netherlands at the Kalinga Stadium, climbed to sixth as Spain dropped one place after losing both their FIH Hockey Pro League 2021/22 matches to Argentina. They have also lost one match each to Belgium and England this month.

With 2029.396 points, the Indian women’s hockey team is now placed sixth behind the Netherlands (3049.495), Argentina (2674.837), Australia (2440.750), England (2204.590), and Germany (2201.085). Spain is seventh with a rating of 2016.149.

The Indian women’s hockey team currently sits at the third position in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2021/22 table with 22 points from 8 games. India will be facing Belgium in a double-header in away games on June 11 and 12.

Speaking on the achievement, the Indian women’s hockey team chief coach Janneke Schopman said, “As a team, we aim to improve and grow and become a consistent contender in Women’s Hockey. The rise in the FIH World Rankings is a nice indicator that we are on the right path.”

“At the same time with the FIH Women’s Hockey Pro League and FIH Women’s World Cup coming up, things can change quickly and therefore we have to keep focusing on our own performance,” Schopman was quoted as saying by Hockey India in a release on Tuesday.

The Indian women’s team captain Savita also expressed delight at the achievement. “This is the outcome of all the hard work our team has done over the past few months. We have worked together as a team against strong competition and achieved good results, and we are proud that we are growing and learning together as a unit.”

Savita added, “We hope to continue our growth as we prepare for tougher challenges in away games against Belgium and The Netherlands. We are confident we will be able to get good results as well and continue to improve.”

However, there was some setback for Indian hockey as the men’s team slipped one place to fourth after the Netherlands overtook them thanks to some good performance this month.

Netherlands (2465.707) regained the third spot, as they swap places with India (2366.990). Germany (2308.156) continues to hold the fifth place but England (2171.354) moved to sixth ahead of Argentina (2147.179) thanks to their recent wins against France and South Africa in the Pro League.

Australia retained the top spot in men’s rankings with 2842.258 points with World and Olympic champions Belgium snapping at their heels with 2764.735 points.

Unexpected season but unity in the team will help MI bounce back: Rohit Sharma

0

Mumbai, May 31 Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma has conceded that it was an “unexpected season” for the five-time Indian Premier League champions, having finished last in IPL 2022, and added that “unity in the team” was the biggest takeaway as the side aims to find its winning ways next season.

IPL 2022 turned out to be the worst season for Mumbai Indians with the side winning just four league games and losing 10 to finish 10th and last. Gujarat Titans took the lucrative league by storm, winning the title in their first year itself, with former Mumbai Indians all-rounder Hardik Pandya leading from the front.

“It was an unexpected season but we do want to reflect on the learnings and the positives. It was great to see how the team stuck together and backed each other. Now it’s about how we look at the next season and how we prepare. We managed to end on a high and that was important for us. We are gonna come back stronger,” said Sharma, reviewing the just-concluded season.

“The unity in the team is a good sign. I didn’t see any of them give up. We stayed together as a family. They were trying their best in training and I am proud of that. The camaraderie in the team has been excellent. We had one goal and everyone was working towards it,” added Sharma, under whose captaincy Mumbai has won five IPL titles.

Sharma was also impressed with what he saw in the youngsters’ mindset.

“Some of them are going to begin players in the future. Them putting their hand up and giving their best was the most pleasing part of the season. They are mentally strong and have that hunger. A lot of them were playing for the first time so it was our job to make them feel comfortable. The support from the management is crucial here and I am glad to know we have that. They gave us the freedom and support and I can see a bright future for the team,” concluded Sharma.

Mammootty to Ashokan to Renji Panicker to Lal: Thrikkakara is a star-studded constituency

0

Kochi, May 31 A star-studded electoral battle is underway in Kerala for the Thrikkakara by-election in Kochi as a number of celebrity voters including superstar Mammootty came to cast their votes on polling day on Tuesday.

After casting his vote Mammootty had just one thing to say that all voters should come and exercise their franchise and saying this he slipped away from the media who got around him, even as all know he has been the chairman of the CPM-backed Kairali TV channel since its inception in the late ’90s.

Then there was popular comedian Harisree Ashokan whose alignment in politics is quite well known as he was a star campaigner at Dharmadom – the constituency of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Kannur district in 2021 Assembly polls.

Once a hugely popular scriptwriter and now a busy actor Renji Panicker was another one who cast his vote and after doing it, he told the media that this election is going to be an evaluation of the Kerala government.

Then there was actor, producer, and director Lal who also came early and cast his vote and said this is a keenly contested election.

Award-winning director M.A. Nishad was another one who cast his vote and pointed out it’s going to be a test of nerves.

The total electorate in the Thrikkakara constituency this time is 1,96,805 up from 1,94,113 in the 2021 Assembly polls which were won by Congress veteran P.T. Thomas by a margin of 14,329 votes.

When Thomas passed away in December last year, the fresh polls became a necessity and the Congress has fielded his widow, Uma Thomas, while the CPI-M brought in young interventional cardiologist Joe Joseph, while the BJP went for veteran leader A.N. Radhakrishnan.
